Excellent professor. Organized, to the point, and clear in her instructions and expectations.
Good Prof, very practical in her approach, doesn't try to trick you, you actually learn stuff!
ADAPTS HER STYLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF HER CLASS.
Nice teacher. Very organized. However, her marking scheme is a bit odd. Participating in her class will definately make a huge difference in your grade. You have to talk in class!!
If you talk alot, this is the class for you. Participation is worth more than midterms. She also seems to favorite presentations of people who talk alot, even if they're not that great.
If you study the text diligently, you will ace her exams. No tricks. Very clear expectations. Good grades are a direct function of your effort.
Really nice prof, fantastic notes. I did find it difficult to know what her expectations were on exams and projects. The exams were way more than expected, and cover every single area of the text books not just the notes.
She expects too much out of a 2nd year course. In the beginning of the semester, she put questions on assignments that she didnt even teach, nor was it in the textbook. Her exams aren't too bad, but i'm not sure if she knows what shes doing.
Explains concepts more clearly than the book does. Assignments are easy & if you don't get it the TA will basically tell you the answer anyway. Exams are fair (MC/short & long answer), will tell you to read a chapter up to a certain page if she's not going to test you on the rest. I would def take classes with her again, she's super nice.
This prof is really amazing. At first, i was kind scared about this class but she totally turned it around for me. She is very helpful, explains stuff clearly and she is nice!(Unlike the devil Metadeen). Her exams are a breeze (expect the final was a little harder :-O). Just focus on the lecture notes and you will do good in her class. Thanks Karen
Sexy voice, but a bit lazy and hates emails. The extra stuff she writes on overhead is very imp for exams. Easy to get perfect on assignments if you go to TA office hours. MT was a very fair game, but final had some retarded Qs and disproportionately focused on topics like auctions. Her approach is more strategy/theory unlike Matadeen(quantitative)
Shes nice, but her lecture notes have way to much information. Not concise enough. Shes alright at teaching, although sometimes she makes the concepts harder than they really are.
An exceptional prof who made academic economics relevant to real-world business and strategy. This course completely changed my view of Econ. Quant concepts covered in first few lectures/tutorials so do not miss. Shares her knowledge liberally so lots of ground covered - review slides before class. Fair, professional, consistent and organized.
Very good prof, hard exams.
I didn't really like her first cause she spoke slowly and quietly and held her mic in hand so that made some distracting noises. but after first midterm i started to study harder so the material became more clear for me. the lecture recordings really helped. but overall the course is damn hard
Hard course. Study every single slide. TAs are irrelevant to be honest.
She teach well and very clear during lecture. However, she does talk fast and sometimes it is very easy to miss minor important details. Even though she is a good prof, her exams are hard.
A very professional prof who really knows how to teach. Lectures are well organized and very informative. It's important to truly understand what she mentioned in the lecture
The course content is hard but she does a good job of communicating the material. I'm not sure what the other 207 profs are like but I would definitely recommend her.
Do the assignments, they pretty much reflect how the exams will be. I found her a bit off putting at first as she didn't seem very friendly; she seemed more like she was going to be very difficult because she had something to prove but she became much more friendly as the semester went on. Overall good prof.
I would definitely recommend taking this class with her. Her exams are really straight forward and she only tests off her lectures so if you study her lecture slides you'll be fine. All her lectures are recorded as well so listening to those before an exam is very beneficial. Overall, loved her!
BUS 207 is a hard course that requires lots of work. Karen speaks very fast and sometimes tests you on the minor stuff. Make sure you listen to the audio online again and study every slide! Overall, good prof.
Karen is a good prof. Her exams were very difficult and she gives very little material to study or practice with. The textbook is irrelevant but she only tests on lecture material. Study every single slide, memorize graphs, and understand the short assignments that she does provide. Overall, she is very knowledgeable.
Karen is smart and articulate. her lectures are organized, clear and informative. her exams are fair and are based only on the lectures, so if you pay attention during lectures and UNDERSTAND everything on the slides, you can't go wrong with the exams. very recommended!
This is a hard class for a second year Business class, but Karen is quite clear and makes the theory simple and easy to understand. She can be monotone sometimes which put me to sleep, but in a good way. Take her, I hear the other professor is hard to understand.
I took this class with Matadeen last semester and had a horrible time with him. Ruckman is much better if you aren't a calculus whiz like myself. She is extremely organized and knowledgeable and focuses more on theory than on calculations, although they are still covered--just to a lesser extent. Karen is able to explain and communicate well.
Karen is a very articulate and clever prof that made economics more understandable by relating it to real life examples. It is beneficial to re-listen the lectures and know the theory behind each concept because her exams are not as quantitative compared to Matadeen. Overall, i really enjoyed her teaching style. Recommended!!
Ruckman was an excellent professor who was easy to understand. The course itself is extremely difficult and is based on theories and calculus. Overall, exams were fair if you studied all her slides.
Karen is excellent! Her instruction was clear and made it very clear to us what to expect on the exams. Her notes were thorough and readable. She provides you with all the necessary resources to do well. Also her voice is really soothing, it gives me a tingly sensation in the back of my head (a good feeling). I have no complaints. Thank you Karen!
good prof, don't buy the textbook, exam is straight forward but all short answer, make sure you go to the lecture, coz she will test what she said on exam...
Attend all lectures! She tests things covered in lectures. Textbook is only useful for learning the basics but otherwise focus on her lecture slides - IMPORTANT study tool and take good notes of the examples she gives. Her exams were reasonable and straightforward (based on theory and less math). Overall, very nice prof
It is extremely helpful to listen to the lecture records before exams. She is very well prepared for every single class and so should you. Understand the notes rather than simply memorizing them. The average for final exam is quite b/c it was harder than midterms. But it was predictable. Overall, Karen is fantastic.
Don't bother with the textbook, just refer to her lecture notes and watch out for those quirky examples that she likes to give out. A dull course overall but that's not her fault. Monotone voice and doesn't give the impression that she cares about her students. Course could've been easier.
Karen is the best prof for 207, her examples and lecture slides are crystal clear. Midterm and final is mainly theory and all based on her slides :)! Listen to her lecture recording because she goes a little too fast at times..
She looks for very particular answers for midterms/finals so make sure you understand all the theories inside and out.
Karen was a very good prof. Relaxed me a bit because she didn't bury us in homework and never had to use the textbook because her notes are very thorough. Overall prob the best Man. Econ prof you can get. Exams were very fair and the lecture recordings helped a ton. Also she's pretty cute, my friends agree haha.
Awesome (and hot) BUS207 prof. Crystal clear in her lectures (listen to recordings if she's too fast in class) and exams are based entirely off them, no surprises.
good prof. , u need to read the lecture notes only , no need for the book. subject itself is pretty hard but Karen makes it interesting
Ruckman is a good prof who explains every concept clearly ... however she speaks quite fast because she has a lot to cover each lecture. However, she makes up for that by testing just the main ideas ... overall it was an excellent experience.
Really knowledgeable, learned a lot in the class. Gotta work hard at it though, its tough stuff. Just fight through it and you'll get a lot out of it; good foundation for upper div courses!
very clear, knows her stuff well. But, she seems quite rude and rarely responds to emails, and when she does they are very bland responses. Good prof, but doesn't care about students
You won't find a better teacher to take this class with. Mid terms were both completely fair.
I was extremely anxious about taking this class, but I am so glad I got it done with Ruckman as the prof. Although the course material isn't easy, she explains things extremely clearly and lectures are extremely informative. I didn't touch the textbook once so don't bother getting it. Study off her slides and relisten to lectures before the exams.
Karen is very knowledgeable and articulate. Covers SO much in each lecture. I didn't do as well in this class because it is less quantitative than I thought and very theory based. Didn't touch the text; her slides are JAM packed, but she tests only on main points and examples used in class. Fair exams, but gotta study hard.
Karen is an overall great prof. She provides useful lectures but tends to speak really fast so listening to her recording before exams helps a lot. She does give off an impression that she doesn't care much for students, but in the end we're only here for the grade and there is no better 207 prof than Karen at SFU.
Karen is probably the best prof you can take Bus 207 with. This course is very dense, there's a lot of info but she goes over everything very clearly. Midterms and final are very fair, she only tests you on the main concepts. Study off her lectures notes and recordings.
She is a great prof however she is extremely stuck up, she always looks mad 24/7. I could have received a better mark if not for her attitude that she shows during office hours which eventually made me stop asking questions. But aside from that, great prof great course!
I don't know why people say that she isn't nice enough?! (Maybe they expect her to help them out through every step as if in high school). She was really nice and helpful to me and my friends during office hours and in class. She's super smart! 2 midterms and a final. You only need to understand her notes and the examples she gives weekly.
Karen is a great prof. Her Lectures are very informative and vital to doing well on the exam. She explains concepts very well and makes you interested in the subject. Exams are honestly totally fair, if not a little on the easy side for a class that has gotten a pretty bad reputation as far as easiness goes.
Good and clear explanation of concepts. Exams are fair, a little easy if you studied and attended class. ( I didn't but she records her lectures) Straightforward exams and if you do the practice questions you'll be fine. Textbook is useless, I downloaded the ebook but never used it. Good prof.
Karen is a very informative professor. Her lectures are clear (however she does tend to speak and write fast). Her tests are a mix of short answers and calculations. She is definitely a tough grader! You can do well in the class by listening to her lectures before your midterms and final (which is cumulative).
Extremely boring lectures. Assigns excessive readings on certain weeks. Some midterm questions are extremely difficult (theory based). Would not recommend.
She is so helpful! try to make those material interesting . Attending the lecture for 2 hours and you can learn a lot of stuffs useful!!! she is the best!
Super boring lectures
Course: Fair theoretical and numerical based midterms exams (2) and easy (1) final exam. Professor: Crystal clear, seriously cool sense of humour and attitude, ghost pepper on fire^10.
There's two midterms (not cumulative, 25% each) and one cumulative final worth 50%. All her lectures are recorded and posted online so MAKE SURE YOU USE THEM because a lot of the harder theoretical questions are from there. Some memorization but if you keep up each week you should be fine. I can't stress this one enough: go to the TA office hours!
Karen is AMAZING. I hope to be able to have her again. Her lectures are FAST, she speaks quickly and covers a lot in each lecture without much time for questions. BUT if you do the reading she's easy to follow. Her exams only contain material covered in her lectures. She's organized and professional, dry sense of humour, approachable, very bright.
Karen is the best prof you can take BUS 207 with. She is excellent at explaining concepts during lecture, and has a really cool sense of humor. Very pretty with an amazing voice. 2 midterms (25% each, not cumulative) and 1 final (50%, cumulative). Focus more on the theoretical part. Exams are more than fair. Make use of the TA's office hours.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!!! Did not read a single word from it. Her lecture notes are everything you need and they are clear and detailed.
I enjoyed the material and the teacher had a nice refined sense of humour. The TA's were really bad unfortunately and even she agreed that they were marking tests unnecessarily hard.
She is speaking so fast that you can't follow up. you should listen the recording after class that waste lots of time. I think the short answer is more difficult than calculated question.
She is absolutely amazing prof. My all time favourite. Her lecture are very clear and simple. Her TAs Adams and Garry are superb. Karen is very friendly and always willing to help and same goes for TAs. Loved the course and would love to take another class with Karen. She is awesome.
Karen is the BEST professor I've ever had. Her lectures are SUPER clear, she only tests what she talks about in lecture, and the harder concepts she will test using the exact examples she posed in class. Lectures aren't too long and she's just amazing. Can't say enough about her! If you're taking 207 do it with her!
Good lecturer, very clear what she expects, all lecture slides/recordings online if you miss a class.
Everything on her exams is covered in her lectures. Lectures are recorded so you can re-listen outside of class. Listen to the lectures at least twice and you will learn everything you need to pass the exams, however you must attend class as she writes a lot of notes not included in the posted lecture slides, which are essential to understanding.
Karen's lecture notes and lectures are very clear and concise. You DO NOT need the textbook, all of her tests are based purely off her lecture notes. Re-listen to the audio recordings and you'll do fine. P.S. The only Mathematics you need to remember is simple derivatives and simple algebra.
Karen is a good lecturer. All you need is go to class and take down what she says. Don't need to purchase or read the textbook. More qualitative than quantitative. Beware of the high class averages around 76%. 2 midterms, 1 final.
Straight forward class. 2 midterms 25% and a final 50%. Tests are all written and based on theory questions and calculations. Only complaint was the theory questions on the exam didn't get practised much in the weekly examples or tutorials. Also these questions were usually ripped from one slide that she talked about in class. Dont buy textbook!!
Bought the textbook but never used it. All you need to do is to study her slides and listen to the audio she records. Midterms are very straight forward if you understand the concepts. I personally went to see her several times during her office hours. She was helpful and explains very clearly although she barely has no facial expressions.
Karen is knowledgeable explains thoroughly but a little bit boring. Exams are straightforward from the lecture slides, memorize everything word-by-word. Do not worry about the calculations, focus on the theory and you will rock the class. No need for textbook
Karen is great! However, this class is curved and generally straightforward so to do well in this class: Read the lecture slides, RE-LISTEN to her lectures, and do tutorial/examples. Don't bother with the textbook, as her exams are purely off of lectures and practice questions. Also, focus on the theory as her exams are mainly qualitative. Goodluck
This class is like microeconomics but on steroids and Karen is a great prof for this course. She explains concepts very thoroughly even though her voice is quite monotone. Be sure to go to lectures or listen to the lecture recordings as she can test things that were mentioned in lectures but not in the slides.
Karen is alright. She does talk very fast and you really do need to listen to lectures over again to really understand the lectures. That being said, I listened to lectures, studied hours on end, and still managed to fail the class. Mind you, I'm terrible at economics but this is the first class I've ever failed. It's very theory heavy.
Really great professor overall. She is very accessible outside of class and will take the time to help you. Explains concepts well in lecture and goes through homework examples step by step. Midterms and final were fair but tough. Questions were all similar to the examples given in lecture. Textbook is unnecessary to success in the course.
She's such a great professor. I loved having her, despite my natural distaste for math and economics. She made the concepts clear, and listening to her lecture recordings was super helpful, but you have to go to class too to take better notes and see what see writes in the projector. She's really cool too, so go to her office hours if you can.
Incredible prof. I deeply regret not keeping up in her class, and my eventual poor grade reflected that; practice, do what she says, and it's an automatic B+ or higher
Great prof, would definitely take again. explains everything clearly.
I loved Karen as a 478 prof. Goes through PPT, then dives into a case for second half. Reinforces concepts (participation through discussion q's- helps you remember for exams). Final project (work hard!) because students are pretty smart to get into this class. If you want an enjoyable exp of 478, and learn (actually "learn"), take Karen!
Karen was a great prof for 478! You dont need to study much if you show up to lectures and just listen to the cases as the final and midterm are very fair. Group work is only 25% of your grade so its much less than other 478 profs if you're not a fan of group work. Karen makes it really easy for students to do well if they want to!
Karen is the BEST. Explains concepts SO well & makes what is said to be such a difficult course as simple as can be. Super cool, great sense of humor, very knowledgeable & genuinely wants to help you succeed. Took during COVID &was very impressed with its organization. Hope I can take more classes with her IRL. You won't regret taking it with her.
teaches fluently and flawlessly, zero waste time, and doesn't ask ridiculous questions on exams
Karen is overrated. She's pretty average, I wouldn't say she's that good, but given that she's definitely the best option compared to others, I can't say she's that bad either. You can find better teachers on Youtube because she speaks quite fast and sometimes explanations aren't very clear.
Karen's lectures are a little dry, as she was a theory heavy prof, which made me less interested in the content. The grading scheme of the class is insane, with 50% of your grade based on midterms and the other 50% on the final. Would not recommend Karen if you struggle with exams, as this grading scheme will screw you over. Not bad, but not great.
Karen is a great professor and really cares about her students. Don't bother purchasing the textbook, I didn't open it once! You need to attend lectures and memorize everything she says in her recorded lectures. Stay on top of it and you will have no problem succeeding. Test questions are extremely similar to weekly examples and tutorial problems!!
Signed up for a course that was supposed to be fully in-person, she sends an email to half the class the day before it starts (I never received the email, had to find out from a fellow classmate) that she's switching to a "hybrid" model, meaning none of the lectures are in person, and instead are prerecorded online. Not the class I signed up for.
No assignments, or opportunity to bring mark up other than 2 midterms (worth 25% each) , and final (worth 50%). The prof is nice but I learned most of the course concepts trough youtube tutorials rather than the lecture recordings. 207 is a generally difficult course.
Karen was a great prof for 207. She's caring, has a sense of humour and really sets her students up for success by providing all the materials needed for the exams. Do all of the practice questions and memorize what she mentions in the recorded lectures and you will succeed!
Karen is a solid choice for Bus 207. The class is content heavy and leans on one of the more difficult courses in Beedie. But she explains concepts clearly. One downside is the grading criteria is based on 2 midterms and a final worth 50%. The exams are fair and similar to her lecture examples.
I enjoyed microeconomics and really enjoyed this class. It's micro mixed with derivatives but it's not too bad. Professor Ruckman was a great lecturer. She explained concepts very clearly and her examples were very relevant. The textbook was optional and she tests from her lectures. She tells you exactly what to expect and has very fair tests.
Karen is really sweet and explains the concepts. However, you are only graded by 3 exams: 2 midterms and 1 final
Good prof. Straight forward and everything you expect from a business/commerce prof. Class content is a mf. The slides and notes she provides on canvas are great and everything you need to pass the exams well. Read the textbook regardless.
As someone who doesn't understand econ, Karen is great. All lectures are recorded and added to Canvas, so I would watch all her lectures at home slowly rather than go to lecture. She actually works through problems, which really helped me understand. Her TAs also do that at the end of class. Very fond of her teaching style as a struggling student.
Karen is a fantastic lecturer, and her exams are extremely fair and mainly come from her lecture notes and the example questions she provides on Canvas. All her lectures were recorded and uploaded to Zoom, which is helpful, and she knows how to keep students engaged during class.
Karen is a great professor that lectures well and is very experienced. Graded by 3 exams total, which have both theory and calculation questions. Some of the theory questions can sometimes be a bit tricky so make sure to pay attention to the lectures, but the calculation questions are very similar to the weekly problems and aren't too complex.
Karen is one of the best profs out there. Her exams are super fair, taken straight from the weekly examples and lectures. For theory, just pay attention to EXACTLY what she says verbally in lectures as she does expect you to remember those details. But she makes the content really interesting and tells you exactly what you need to succeed. 10/10
Honestly the way she teaches thing is not correct, half the time her sketches and diagrams are her own rendition rather than following what most other lecturers, textbooks, etc use. She sets a bad example of how economics is taught/learned
A good professor. Explained everything clearly in the lectures. Just pay attention to every details and you will be fine.
worst prof i have at sfu
Half of the class is always falling asleep and she can't even bother making the class more engaging. We wrote a midterm and she added some extra questions she never taught in class
She has a super monotone voice that makes her lectures a snoozefest. There are no assignments and you are solely graded on the 3 exams. Would not recommend
Horrible professor. During winter break, I saw an F on my transcript. I did all the exams, got ~40% but she still failed me. Emailed her, and she was still unwilling to bump me to a D. Don't take her if you're like me. Horrible prof at Beedie.
have fun with a final worth 75% of your grade. do not recommend.
LISTEN TO THE LECTURE !! make sure to watch the lectures for the exams and midterm! she explains what to expect and as long as you do the example and tutorial questions you'll be fine. TA's were not the best. highly recommend her for BUS 207, but beware that your entire grade is based on 2 midterms and 1 final.
Karen is a good teacher. with two midterms 25% and one final 50%, the exams were pretty straightforward and very similar to concepts we went over in class. I didn't buy the textbook although the extra practice questions would've been good. make sure to rewatch lecture recordings.
I took 207 and 307 with Karen, and she is the most supportive, fair, and effective professor I've had. She answers emails thoroughly, grades fairly, and creates exams to test understanding—not to trick you. Karen truly represents what SFU aspires to provide: passionate and caring educators. I recommend using textbook Qs and weekly problem sets.
Lectures can be dry, but staying engaged pays off. Exams are key, so use Unstuck study and the textbook to prep. Grades rely heavily on the final, so come ready to perform.
Karen recorded her lectures which I loved to use to go back on in preparation for the tests. She also provides plenty of example questions which if you master are all very similar to test questions. I enjoyed the class and thought she did a good job at presenting the material and not making it any harder than it needed to be. e
The best prof I have had at SFU so far. Her lectures are straight forward and provides lots of practice questions with answer keys and interesting real-world examples. Exams are very fair—often I felt like I overstudied—and reflect the practice questions and something random she'll mention in lecture. She clearly cares about her students :)
Very Fair prof, exams are fair, study material given is enough to do super well in exams, waitch the video recording for conceptual questions.
Although your grade is fully based on exams, Karen's exams are extremely fair and very similar to the practice problems. She's a very organized professor and provides many real world examples making it easy to comprehend the material.
