Very hard class and she gets WAY to excited about plants!!!
mmmmmmk, the tests are difficult
hard tests
NEVER take this class during the summer
She's hilarious & makes class fun.
Expects too much in a 14 week course. Tests are subjective, which makes it hard
She is great, works with you, helps you to understand life principles. Good job
tests are hard, but she keeps you interested
She is soooo funny. the digrams she draws are just as funny... mmmmmkay
extremely hard exams, but always interesting, know notes backwards and forwards
great sense of humor, hard tests, makes you learn

best lecture i've ever had...very hard tests (class not recomended to freshmen)
Take good notes, tests are easy if you study. Goto SI sessions. Great teacher.
She is good, just don't miss the class. Test are easy if you study!
She's a great teacher and her voice makes class even more fun.
Tests are hard...I went to class but 3 words: RETAKING NEXT SEMESTER
She's absolutely the best! If you can toodle around her doodahs and dinky-doos, life will be bearable for you underlings.
Lectures so most anyone can understand. Uses lots of pic. and they way she talks keeps everyone alert. Never Know what she will say next
She is a little looney, but learned a lot in her class. Keeps it interesting and keeps you awake.
She is really energetic about the subject which really gets me to pay attention. She is very intelligent and knows what she is talking about.
Makes a general botany course way too difficult. You have to know every tiny detail for her tests. The tests are ridiculously hard.
I signed up for this class without taking a biology class first, and Schaffer was rather rude when she asked what I was doing there. The class is ridiculously hard, and she takes off a letter grade for misspelling words on the exam. Not recommended.
She has good lectures, but her tests can be kinda tricky. Going to the SI's really helps! I think she's one of the best biology teachers here!
HARD HARD CLASS
Hard as hell lots of info in very lil time don't take unless have too be prepared to work you ASS off
She is very energetic and loves what she does. She explains very well but moves pretty fast. Do not take this class as a freshmen. Tests are way to hard for a 100 level class. She takes off for everything.
I thought I would hate this class and really dreaded it. I didn't do so hot in zoo, but in this class I got an AOld tests and the SI's are very helpful almost imperative if you want to do goodShe is a very fun teacher, she cracks me up at least once a day
Botany is very very hard. For the tests you have to know absolutely everything. She takes off for everything. I have an A in the class, but I worked my butt off. She is very energetic about what she teaches and knows what she is talking about
very exciting, her energy will keep you awake in a boring lecture. is willing to stay after class to go over tests. tough class, i would take her again. i had to work pretty hard for a B but i learned more than in other sections.
Her energy level is scary sometimes, but she presents the info in a clear way. She only grades on the tests which are pretty hard. Study your butt off and you might pull out a C.
She is the most energetic teacher I ever had, and makes the material really interesting. Even so, the tests are insane...I'm not kidding. Do not take this course as a freshman, I did, and ended up doing poorly not only in botany but in other classes too.
Awesome! Hilarious lectures and easy to understand.
I thought her enegy made me learn the material. I didn't have to study much bc she engrained it into my mind. My advice is take precise notes of everything she says, study those, and make sure you go to the SIs.
Funny and energetic. Made it interesting, but make sure to go to class so you aren't behind because sometimes there is alot of material she goes over and when she writes on the board it's crazy so it's hard to get notes from others and understand them.
very hard class, but studied my butt off and got a good grade. love the teacher, she is hard but made me laugh every lecture. she knows her stuff and is very enthusiastic.
A very hard professor, but what a personality! You will learn that flowers have "doo dahs" and "hangy thingys". There is a ton of memorization but if you really study hard, it is passable. Her insect impersonations are the best!
very hard class. You hav to study your ass off. IT is very fun though. I failed it miserably, but had a lot of fun. go to class cause it is hard to make up the notes. tests are hard. She grades hard but she is very helpful if you go to her office
Great lecture, lots of fun and easy to listen to, but really hard tests. She doesn't have powerpoints, doesn't give outlines or study guides, and doesn use the book. Study your ass off and take perfect notes if you can. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
strange lady but very enthusiatic and knows her stuff. tests are very difficult and you must study a lot....you can't cram for this. notes are crazy and unorganized but if you go to the si's for help you can see what she's talking about. must be willing to work!
Very interesting teacher, acts out alot of examples. Makes things easy to remember.
It's a hard class. Bascially she just stands there and makes everyone laugh. I didnt care for her at all, frankly she annoyed the crap out of me, but that could have been because i sat in the front row and she stood an inch away from me while entertaing the class.
study your ass off- hardest class Ive ever taken- you can get an A on your test but will still be covered in her red pen! she is hilarious and makes me laugh every day! basically-study your ASS OFF!
I hated this class. If you hate Science then you will hate this class. She is hard to understand and her tests are impossible. The only good thing is that she rounds up grades, for example, if you get a 68 its a C!
I learned a lot out of this class amazingly, even if my grade won't show it. She presents the material well but the tests are hard. SI's MIGHT help, it depends who you are.
REALLY HARD CLASS! Better learn how to study, cuz thats all you're gonna do but you learn a lot. She's really funny to listen to if you just sit back every once in awhile. Really good teacher, knows her stuff. Definitly be excited to draw the life cycle of almost every thing you study...
tests are multiple choice, has fun and acts out examples in class. never have to use book, test right out of the notes in class. pay attention and study, and you will do good.
The most dynamic professor I have ever encountered. You cannot sleep in class, she makes it hard to miss the examples she acts out. If you want an A in General Biology, this class is the right one to pick.
This class was so hard but she was really fun. Go to class, the extra credit for being there on days that not very many people were saved me in this class. Test are pretty hard.
Dr Schaffer is easy to listen to, but if you can't draw or understand diagrams, stay away. She likes to put random pictures on the tests, so definately draw everything she puts on the board. Don't be ashamed to take it twice I had to, same with 60% of the class.
I took this class way back three years ago, the first class I ever had my freshman year of college. She is kind of scary at first, but once you loosen up a bit, she is interesting. Very hard tests, study lots. She is cool though. I enjoyed the class. She said Zippidee-Doo-Dah while speaking about he male reproductive system. Think about it!
If you do not know how to study or how to make yourself study you will not do well in her class. I studied my ass off and it payed off. It helps to buy a dry erase board to practice her drawings and a recorder if your are not a fast writer. The lab is harder than the lecture so don't slack off there. Hard work pays off..... I got an A!!!!!
Shes a riot! Its a hard class but she makes it fun and its never boring, just make sure you can write fast and draw fairly well, lots of pics and diagrams
Horrible teacher, a little crazy!
Hard hard teacher. Test are the hardest test at NWMSU. Stay awake in her class, and don't talk...or she is kick you out. She is crazy..But an overall GREAT teacher.
This class is one of those classes where you learn to study or you die. Super hard class but you come out knowing a lot. She is very nice and very helpful and super funny in class. But go to the SI's if you can.
Great teacher! Makes bio fun. Tests are from the notes and go by the notes. She is a bit excentric, but really fun.
She really isnt that bad, just take notes and go to SI once in a while.
Dr. Schaffer is an amazing professor! She is not by any means easy, but she makes plant science SO interesting, which I definitely didn't think was possible. You must work extra hard in her class, but she makes it interesting. GO to the SIs because they will save your grade! Also, draw all the pictures given to you before the day of the test!
She is really funny and helpful. She draws pictures and will always keep you awake!
Great Professor. Tough class. She's very knowledgeable, and makes the information understandable. Very animated. Take good notes and study. DON'T MISS CLASS! Take lab with her too. I didn't and I felt like I was disadvantaged.
Very detailed and percise.
She is extremely rude.
Hard teacher, but very knowledgable! Don't miss her class or you'll be lost. Very fun, very animated. Once you've had her class, you will KNOW the info, not just memorize for tests.
The tests are actually way to difficult for a gen. ed class. I wouldn't recommend her at all... that is unless you are a Biology/science major b/c she does explain things very well.
For botany--VERY educational, but tests are extremely hard. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want a fair grade, you'll go. She's incredibly precise, demands the same of you; on tests you will need EXACTLY the right thing. Rather eccentric/cool, but slightly imposing. Take her if you really want to know the material.
A very challenging class, however she sparked an interest in botany for me! She's very passionate about the subject matter. For the test study your notes very well, practice out drawings on a white board and go to the SIs and you should be fine. She is the best teacher I've had at Northwest so far!
Her enthusiasm for the subject was amazing. She keeps your attention! Take good notes! Attend class! Ask questions! She wants you to learn! Study a lot!Memorize and understand everything she lectures on! Tests are HARD but the info is straight from the notes that you are responsible for taking from her lecture! Final sucks that is y i got a B.
Couldn't understand why everyone in the summer Botany course said she was wonderful. After all, they had failed and were retaking it! I found an old lab test in my book, and the stuff they were learning under Schaffer was detailed and (if you aren't a biology major) useless. If you're taking it as a gen ed requirement, take it with Dieringer.
You take tests that don't seem tough at first...until you get your tests back and see how meticulously graded your test is. You misuse one term and much of the time you get no points on a question, even essay questions which is in my opinion unfair. When you take this class and still study hard, you better not always expect a good test grade.
She is an amazing professor but she really makes you study! Tests are difficult and you need to know your stuff to get a decent grade. She'll do anything to help you and don't be afraid to ask questions. She is a little scary at first but shes very nice and enthusiastic once you get to know her.
She is an amazing teacher. She is truly inspired by Botany and loves to teach it, if you are writing anything bad it is just because you failed due to your own stupidity or laziness. She gives you everything you need, you have to decide to use it.
She's great. makes class interesting, and you can tell she loves her job. tests are hard. Practice drawing the charts on a white board, it will help you tons.
Gen Botany with Schaffer is more like a course in molecular bio. not interesting and all memorization. good luck. learned Deringer teaches more ecology stuff in summer
She is a very exciting teacher! You will not fall alseep in her class! Tests are hard and tricky so study, study, study! Going to the SI's will help tremendously! She will challenge you, but you will learn.
I laughed in class almost every time. She is engaging and is passionate about the material which helps students to be passionate. She also keeps up with grades of students and makes sure they not only pass but UNDERSTAND the concepts. She is really really great.
Overall good. About equal to adam in diffaculty of material and exams. Both also try to make things at least somewhat entertaining. Labs in botany are less organized and no presentation of slides like adam. Challenging class.
HARD Expects you to know everything inside and out. She's entertaining and class can be fun but she goes TOO fast and it's all lecture. Know processes and cell types and DONT mispell Botany petal or sepal or its -50 points. SIs are helpful. Lots of studying and time. She takes off points for small mistakes like drawing 2 leafs instead of 1 on test.
A lot of people don't like her, but I really did. She is one of those teachers who really cares about her students, and she's very helpful. Her tests cover a lot of material, but I found the class interesting even though I HATED botany in AP bio. A great class if you like learning for learning's sake.
Covers the material very quickly and makes you know a lot of information inside and out. Though she's very passionate about her subject which makes it easier to learn. The tests are hard but the S.I's help a ton. Overall, she's a very good professor.
Great teacher! She is very passionate about the course and loves to teach it. However, be ready to take a lot of notes. Do NOT study the night before, you will not be able to memorized it all and get confused and fail. I had to retake the course because I did not take it seriously. She is willing to answer any questions you have.
She loves the topics and will explain things thoroughly. However, the tests and final are ridiculous. Out of all the info given in class, she expects you to retain every bit of it. One shouldn't have to spend 5x as much time studying for a gen ed as they would for an upper level major course.
Terrible professor, you only take tests no other grades go into the gradebook. The tests are way too hard, she over complicates things. She gives out study guides for tests but they don't help at all. Gives out pop quizzes asking questions about her personal life for extra credit. She is awful about grading things.
Dr. Schaffer was an awesome person, but for a Gen. Ed, her class was a lot. I spent more time on this than any other class. Your only grades are tests.
Only grades Exams. She does not do quizzes, test, assignments or homework. Does not give extra credit. Excepts you to study 3 hours for every hour you are in the class. Would not recommend.
This is a tough class that will through my prepare you. If you can't stick it out here, then this class is a pretty good indicator on how you will do for the rest of your college career pursuing biological sciences. All the grades are grades and you have to study. As a student, this sucks, but you'll appreciate it in the long run.
If you aren't the greatest test taker like I am, I would not choose Schaffer. The only grades given in this class are tests. Each test has a ton of material on it and are quite difficult. Go to SI sessions and go to class even though attendance is not taken!
Schaffer is the best Biology professor to take. No matter how boring the subject is, she can make it interesting! She is very funny, also. She only has exams and a final so you will need to study. She also is very eager and understanding when you go into herboffice for help. Great professor!
Even though she doesnt teach Bio often, she does an amazing job when she does. Be warned, she does occasionally do attendance quizzes (over random trivia. Not bio related). There is no homework. All of your grade from this class will come from the exams.
