I believe she is new to our school but she is such a great teacher. She is so flexible with handing in assignments and everything and she is really understanding and helpful. She a simple english class really fun and interesting.
really like her she makes things interesting and is an animated talker NOT boaring and monotone!!!! she is open to new ideas and wont make u feel stupid
karen is always willing to help! great teacher and interesting lectures.
very nice, fair marker, gives good feedback, and fun
Karen is very animated and really gets you to think about literature at a deeper level. She is very helpful with the writing process and always responds to emails right away. I will definatley take another class with her.
I absolutely think Karen is a fabulous teacher-leader. She is open to and encourages alternate points of view & is extremely helpful! The use of Web CT is the best so far. She has the ability to invoke passion for the art and is not afraid to express what "is". Take her, work hard, participate and all is well. C
an amazing teacher! so helpful, and she makes you work and allows maximum participation in discussions. she is also really helpful in the writing process for papers and responds to emails asap and is always willing to sit down and help students.
awesome prof, helpful comments on work, clear assignments.
Karen is the type of instructor who reminds you why you are in college to begin with. She is smart, genuine, helpful, and funny :) I thoroughly enjoyed her class.
Karen is one of the best instructors I have ever had. UCFV should snap her up before another university does. She is compassionate for her students, passionate about her subject, clear about her expectations, and available if you need her. You could never pick a better instructor, even if you HATE English!
Karen is bestest inglesh teecher ever!
One of the best teachers I have ever had at ucfv! I actually wanted to participate in class for a change! Her lectures were never boring. She helped me understand the literature at a much deeper level and gave sooo much time and help! She answered every email and was there for office hours. I will definitley try to take another course with her!
Great teacher. Great Method. Expectations very reasonable. Very helpful, personable. Unfortunately, not staying at UCFV beyond doctorate :-( too bad!
Overall great teacher. She's very intelligent and teaches the material well.
Karen is intelligent, insightful, opinionated.. she does not lecture, but rather is open to anyone's point of view and opinon as long as they can offer textual support. She gives helpful feedback on papers, responds to emails promptly, wonderful class. Be willing to do the reading, come to class with something to say, and you'll do well.
Karen is an awesome teacher! I thoroughly enjoyed the class and most of it was due to her. She is very clear in her assignments and is always available for help. Her class discussions keep you involved and interested in the class instead of just hearing her talk. I would definitely take her again!
Disliked her teaching methods.
Karen is such a great instructor I have taken three of her classes. You have to read the required texts and come to class prepared for discussion. Her lectures are insightful and interesting. She is always available during her office hours and quickly responds to e-mails. Karen is a wonderful instructor who only wants to see you succeed!
If you like a teacher who's left wing...she's about as far left as you could get. Any further left and you'd be right.
She is great with lecturing through interesting class discussion, and very helpful with assignments. Fair marker. She specializes in Victorian authors and likes women in society issues. I was a little annoyed that the Popular Fiction topic with her was Victorian Lit, but it was fun anyway.
Karen is a wonderful lady and teacher... HIGHLY recommended. She is fun, kind, and helpful. Responds to emails and questions FAST. She is very left-wing... but open to any ideas and opinions. Marking is fair, you'll do well in her class if you a) read the material b) show up to class with something to say!
Awesome teacher, really makes you question everything
Great prof. Flexible about handing in work. Friendly. Will clarify anything you don't understand. Students at other uni's said she has favourites?! Thats bull. She doesnt favour people. She recognizes people that participate in her class. If you decide to be boring/lazy and not have an opinion on anything in her class, thats your fault, not hers!
Karen is definately brilliant and is very helpful when you need her help. However, she is a very tough marker and when you make a comment she shoots you down when she doesn't agree. She can be nicer. I think she does slightly pick favourites in the class. But overall, she's not bad.
She's okay. She's a fair marker. A little tough, but fair. She is really in her world though.

Karen is a great instructor. You will learn a lot and love her teaching style! She makes anything fun to learn :)
Pretty good. Hard to meet with sometimes and a litle difficult to get help with things
Loved her. She is interesting and has a lot of energy. She seems disorganized and goes off on tangents but it makes her funny. she has her opinions but is always willing to hear others, and in fact encourages her students to disagree with her. you have to read the text and say something in class. would recommend a class with her.
Wonderful teacher! Lots of fun, intelligent, and a pretty tough marker. A challenge, intellectually and academically. Do the readings, enjoy the discussions.
What a wonderful teacher. he classes are very interesting and she involves everyone without putting people on the spot and making them feel uncomfortable. take her classes. she is lovely
Karen is one of my favourite professors ever! she is very insightful and passionate. If you do the readings and come prepared you will do fine in the course!
Her discussions evoke great thoughts, although sometimes tend to drag on. Keeps the material interesting, is incredibly helpful, but is a tough marker! Always willing to look over papers in advance and give thoughts / help though.
If she wasn't such a radical feminist I would be able to stomach her lectures.
love her!!!! so encouraging!
She's very kind and will spend lots of time making sure you fully understand the material. Make sure you come prepared to discuss the readings. Someone said she has strong political views, which is true, but she never tries to force them on the rest of the class! She's a fair marker, too.
SHE IS AMAZING, best professor i have ever had! such a great lady! super approachable and really interesting, she brings a great energy to the class and get everyone involved. She makes you a better writer. only downside is that she teaches english
i love this prof!!!! she makes an effort to get to know everyone in the class, and allows for discussion. i would take any other class with her, anytime.
karen would be a great instructor if she wasn't so biased. also, her bizarre and forceful feminist ideologies are impossible to take seriously. i would never take a class with her again.
SIMPLY AMAZING!
Did not like her teaching methods. Felt bullied and offended sometimes. good novel was used though and she likes to talk like a trucker. She takes attendance and is worth 5% of your mark as well as class participation.
Karen's teaching style wasn't for me. I felt like her lectures were more to prove how much she knew rather than for the purpose of actually teaching the class, though her lectures were very prepared. Be prepared to put in the work and accept (constructive?) criticism, and lots of it! I wouldn't take another course with Karen unless I had to.
I really enjoyed taking this course with Karen. She is a very fair marker. Her lectures are interesting and insightful on the pieces you read. Attendance is mandatory, and you use the textbook quite a bit for the pieces of literature. I am seriously considering taking another course with Karen. I think she is a great prof and very helpful.
Karen was an amazing professor! She knows the material she is teaching and expects you to do the same. Come prepared by reading the material and formulating your own thoughts - she loves class participation. She is a very strong feminist, so if you don't like that, you've been warned. She expects hard work from all, but she also has her favourites.
I did not at all enjoy taking a course with Karen. She spends the majority of the class rambling on and on, loses her train of thought frequently, misspells words, and can never seem to come up with the words she wants to use - this is followed my a moment of awkward silence in which she is thinking of a word she would like to use.
HArdest English Teacher at UFV! STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
Everything gets turned into a feminist subject. Talks at you, doesn't seem to want to hear opinions not in line with her own, struggles to find words constantly - be prepared for many annoying pauses in lecture. Disorganized lecture notes and missed class often. I will never take another class with her.
This is the 2nd class I've taken with Karen. I like her teaching style and she is extremely helpful if you ask for it. Wonderful person. Her marking is hard but fair. Don't expect easy grades. You will have to work for it. But I would definitely take another class with her.
Incredibly tough marker, especially for a 100 level course. I would not take another class with her.
Karen speaks to her students like they are not smart. I felt offended most of the time in her class. However, there was no final exam only an essay. I did like the novel she picked, it was very interesting.
She is such a hard marker. STAY AWAY!!! She talks to you like you're dumb and I cannot stress enough how hard she marks. She's kinda lazy and don't find her class interesting at all.
A good lecturer, though a tough marker and not easily approachable.
She is really hard to approach and thinks you are dumb. Really hard marker and maybe should stop teaching she really does not know how to treat students right. Maybe find another job that she enjoys.
Karen is one of the best profs I have has thus far! She is very clear on what is needed for the course and provides more than enough material to help you throughout the semester. I found she was a very easy marker and was extremely nice to our class, she actually takes the time to know your name and what not which is nice.
To sound as nice as possible I hated this prof. Very tough marker, and will make you sound stupid. Unfair marker for a first level class. Wouldn't take a class with her again
Karen is a very helpful professor. Don't take a class with her if you want an easy A however. You get out of what you put into it and she is more than willing to give you chances in succeeding in her class. She expects quality work and will mark you accordingly. The night before essays will not do for her. An extremely great person outside of class
Great prof. Can be intimidating at first, but wants you to succeed, as long as you put in the work. Started off with a B, engaged in the material and ended with As on term paper and final alike. Sparks much interest in literature, almost enough to make me switch majors. I am not an english major and did well. Engage in material and it will pay off.
Karen is intimidating, but overall she's a great, "no BS" prof. She introduced herself as an "extremely left-winged feminist" on the first day, and the course's content focused largely on gender identity. She'll say it like it is. Uncontrollable life circumstances unfortunately resulted in her leaving mid semester. Too bad she couldn't stay.
She was very clear with assignment expectations but she was a hard marker. Don't take her if you are not willing to put in the work. She will adjust your grade based on any improvements you make as the semester goes on (always in your favour!) Participation is a must and if you plan to skip class, you will not be able to pass.
Very opinionated but she is helpful and is willing to help. Cancelled class more than a few times because of illness or what not.
She is tough marker
Great prof, don't let her scare you, she's very smart. She gives helpful feedback and leaves room for improvement on essays so you can revise. She's a fair marker, and doesn't like tests. Instructions are crystal clear in class, and she answers all questions sincerely. She's my favorite prof, amazing woman. Loves to see students engaged/particp.
I found Dr. Selesky to be a little intimidating, but she is really inviting and is willing to help you succeed as long as you put in the work that is needed.
I took Karens class last winter and really enjoyed it, Karen is very nice down to earth prof that is very approachable outside of class. The textbook was cheap! and useful! what a concept
Very personable/approachable prof. Expects you to do your assignments/readings for class but the instructions are clear and she gives you lots of time to complete them. She also wants you to be punctual and participate in class. Tough grader but will adjust grade with improvement. Everything she taught was practical and (imo) very useful!
This class was so boring honestly, I didn't show up half the time and still passed some how. You have to do your homework and just not fall asleep during long lectures and I'm sure you can get an A. Overall she was a nice prof I just didn't like the way she taught and the books we had to read were super boring and very focused on religion.
This class could get a little boring, but in the end, the essay topics were interesting and if you do the work, you should be able to get a good grade. She really prepares you for the final exam which is in class and is not a big % of your mark.
dreadfully boring. The way she talks puts me to sleep and sounds like she's putting herself to sleep too. Arts101 is a boring class anyways, try to take it with someone who's at least excited to be alive.
Arts 101 is a pointless class as it is, but since it's mandatory you should choose someone who at least knows what they're doing. She did not understand the electronic side of things, and made it feel like a worse version of Eng105. Also, hard marker unless you share her opinion in your writing.
Arts 101 was a boring and useless class, but Karen made it worse. She is a fairly nice person, but she marks way too hard, especially for this type of class. Everyone should get A's as long as they do the work, but she only gives the best marks to people who think like she does.
Karen is kind and forgiving. Do the work, participate, and you will succeed.
This was ENG108 Online. Her lectures are pre recorded. Can be hard to follow, specifically she has long pauses where she is in thought or goes off on a tangent about other things. Not always clear on expectations for assignments, which makes her marking seem hard. Many papers required.
I took my first english course with Dr. Selesky and absolutely loved her! You get back what you put into the assignments, she is very reasonable with marks and gives good feedback! I will definitely be taking more classes with her.
She is a very nice lady, Arts 101 can be a bit boring but its easy. Although, to get an A, you will have to put in a lot of effort
Karen is a nice professor and managed to make at least a decent amount of content for such a pointless class, but unfortunately she is extremely politically opinionated and vocal about it. If you dont share the same options, she will likely not grade you equally to others. She also zoned out a lot and is difficult to follow in lectures.
She is particularly adamant on you showing up to class and gets angry if you don't even though this was by far the most useless in person class. The lectures were hard to follow along as she took many breaks in between points and she wants you to do your portfolio her way and cuts marks if its done any other way.
Karen is probably a nice enough person, but this class is so frustrating because it's completely pointless. She should grade students easily because of the kind of class it is, but she has no idea what she's doing. I dreaded going to this class. ARTS 101 is also not transferable to a lot of other schools, so it's really hard to stay motivated.
So boring.
Karen's a nice prof. She loses her train of thought a lot and her lectures can get pretty boring. She's very understanding of technical difficulties and tries to help as best she can but also tells you who you can contact if she can't help.
Super nice teacher, marks fairly, gives you a lot of room for creativity in your papers, there is quite a bit of reading and she does mark participation but I found you can slack a bit on the readings as she goes through them in class.
Very nice proffeser. I love her way of teaching
Karen is a great English teacher and actually the reason I am pursuing it as my major! Im not the greatest writer and was nervous to pursue, but she gives great examples for guidance and helpful hints along the way.
She was fine but the class was SO BORING. Idk if it's just the class itself but she certainly did not make it more fun. She takes a lot of breaks when talking and loses her train of thought all the time which was annoying but as long as you show up and do the assignments on time, it is easy to get a good grade. But yeah wouldn't want to take again
I didn't think that I would enjoy this course this much, but I did! Karen was great, and she made class go by quickly! Would recommend:)
I had never taken a lit class before this and hadn't taken an English class in over 5 years. She made this class a lot of fun, and it wasn't that hard. There was a lot of reading, and as I am not a strong reader or that familiar with poetry, it was a little challenging, but I would say I left her class with a love of English that I never had.
Karens a great prof. For english 105, she explained her assignments clearly and was not a hard marker. Just pay attention and make sure to communicate with her a lot if u need help. Other then that I would take the class again. Karens very nice.
Karen is very helpful when it comes to understanding what you may be doing right or wrong. She gives a good amount of time to finish assignments and supports you through the process. If you follow her instructions and finish assignments on time, you will not have trouble getting an A. I would not hesitate to take her class again.
She is knowledgeable & loves Children Lit, good layout, clear expectations. Blackboard -easy to follow & find info. Lectures -Difficult to follow -long (1hr or more, with high vocab & many tangents makes it a bit boring. Heavy focus on negative analysis of fairy tales. That said, she loves to hear your essay topic ideas -willing to explore this.
1st time taking her; pretty solid. She is very passionate about children' lit. and thus her lectures drag on a bit, but the books discussed were enjoyable so it wasn't too bad. Bc/ it was online, there was a lot of group discussion participation on Bb each week where she posted a couple questions about the material and you responded. Overall 7/10
Professor Selesky is a very knowledgeable teacher. Her lectures are a little dry, however she has great ideas toward children's literature. Their are a few assignments and she can be a difficult marker. If you do all the readings you should do great in this class. Classroom discussion post helped with assignments.
Karen was a very knowledgeable professor. Her lectures and assignments were clear and not overwhelming. In the class, there were three short papers and one final essay. She always replied back to the email at a responsible time and answered all my questions. I would definitely take another class with her again.
Took it online this semester - she kept lectures pretty light and you can watch at 1.5 speed cause she talks slowly. She reused readings for different assignments throughout the weeks which was nice because I wasn't reading 2 new articles every week. If you listen to her advice in lectures and take in her feedback on assignments you'll be fine.
She is very particular about papers, typically they are out of 10, and as soon as 1 comma is out of place you lose a mark, a few minor mistakes in an amazing paper could get you a 50%. Not very accepting with late assignments, even if you have a valid reason. I only used the textbook one time for an assignment.
Mrs. Selesky is very clearly passionate about her studies, however, she struggled in the online environment to keep students engaged. Lectures were often very hard to listen to and assignments did not always have clear instructions. If you wanted/needed a higher grade you really had to work for it.
Worst class ever. She will deduct participation marks if you don't get good grades in her assignments. She keeps your grades as low as a B. Feel tired during class, it's hard to catch what's being explained. Her suggested readings weren't useful and relevant at all. Avoid her and save money.
Her lectures can be quite boring at times, and often you have to go read the PowerPoint yourself afterwards regardless of the teaching. Your whole grade is based off of around 4 assignments and participation. Beware your participation mark is based off of how well you do in the in class homework writes after her lectures, so make sure they're good!
Karen was pretty good, she was kind and knowledgeable. I wouldn't take another class with her just because she wasn't very interesting to listen to
karen was good but be prepared for lots of readings. she was good but would not take again
a very nice prof. lots of readings (sometimes 2-3 per class, long ones imo) whole grade is based on 4 assignments. writing assignment almost every class /2. numerous peer workshops. going in for feedback (& making the changes) will improve your grade. she wants you to succeed. kinda hard marker & picky so wouldn't take again unless had to lol
She's very kind. She's a light marker for essays and other writing. I can email her anytime and she will respond with good feedback. It's very clear what you need to do. One thing I hate is she is so "boring". Speaks slowly and repeatedly stops mid-sentence to find big words and loses her train of thought. Also doesn't engage with students enough.
The class was easy overall, as long as you put in some effort and read the homework once in a while you can get a good grade, however, her lectures feel like they go on for a million years because she gets distracted and forgets what she was talking about a lot. There was a lot of "ummm..." and "what was I saying?" Very sweet lady though!
Her lectures were the hardest things to get through, as boring as they get. But she is very nice and has good feedback. I have learned a lot of things in that class through assignments and such. But readings are long and very boring and get abundant. Otherwise, she is nice, grades fairly, and is helpful.
Lectures were sooooo boring, I could hardly get through them. However, ENGL 105 isn't the most interesting course. Lots of pre reading but never talked about them in class, so I just stopped doing them. Marked fairly easily, especially if you managed to pay attention when she was explaining her criteria. Was also a quick grader, which I appreciated
Karen was an amazing teacher, however some of her group projects are not clear when she marks but she is an good teacher and wants her students to do good and understand the criteria good.
Dr.Selesky is awesome! You can tell that she really cares about her students & wants them to do well. She gives you time to do work in class, time for peer editing/feedback and gives a lot of opportunities to ask her questions/check your work. Readings and assignments are very clear. She gives a lot of time to finish papers. Would 100% rec. her :)
Karen was a nice prof and wants to help students. I did not do a lot of work in this class and got a fine mark! The highest grade in the class was an 85% but there aren't a lot of assignments and they are easy. Her lectures are not the most engaging for sure. If you miss more than 3 classes she reports people to the student help centre.
good but no help with the assignments u might face academic misconduct
Dr. Selesky has an amazing personality and is always willing to help! However, her lectures are extremely boring, long, and just dragged on. Moreover, her assignment instructions are very very confusing.
Take her and youre clutching a easy A, graded on 4 assignements, just ask a question or answer a question and youre good. Im tell you guys, you better take this class!!!
The class was online so lectures were pre-recorded and are short. Her feedback on papers is often difficult to read because she uses an iPad to write the feedback. She doesn't seem to like giving over an A- on a paper no matter how hard you try, and a single typo can bring your grade down by a lot.
English is usually my least favourite subject, but Dr. Selesky made it the best I could ask for. She is very kind, ALWAYS encourages you asking her for help, and gives good feedback when you ask for it. There was no homework (aside from some readings to do prior to class) and there were only a few assignments over the course of the semester.
Karen was a good prof, super understanding and forgiving. Given that I took 325 with her it was a hard class to get through. The lectures were boring and not very useful. The only useful lectures were the presentations by class members. She is super harsh with grading; you drop a letter grade if you make any minor mistake in your paper. Nice prof
This is one of the hardest profs I have ever had and I have been attending UFV for three years. She doesn't communicate with her students, she is late marking assignments, and she seems to make assumptions about her students. Doesn't like when her students don't agree with her ideas and your grades will suffer for it. Would not recommend.
karen was overall very sweet and I think improved my writing, although the lectures are boring and long it helps that she is personable while talking while making jokes and keeping us engaged. She did not explain things very well until the last minute but now that I understand her, i would take her class again but only if I had to.
I thought she was a great professor! I would take her again. Her marking was fair, but not harsh and though her lectures were a little bit boring at times she made lots of jokes and had good humour. She took everything students had to say and made it work with the lectures in some way and didn't turn down any ideas.
If you think "I'm good at English" or have taken English Honours or other courses at all you will have a reality check. She is such a hard marker with little feedback and is very subjective. If you participate be prepared to be told you are wrong. Journals each week about the reading which were graded. Show up and participate, attend office hours.
I absolutely loved this class. Karen is a very easy marker, gives more than enough time for assignments and is very easy to reach outside of class. she is a very sweet lady, talks a little slow and monotoned, but if you pay attention to what she talks about you will do great in her class!
Karen is kind and approachable. She grades assignments quickly and fairly and values student engagement. The course grade is based on four assignments and participation marks (which involves completing readings and submitting in-class questions). However, her lectures can be monotonous at times.
Dr. Selesky is a kind professor who genuinely wants students to succeed. While lectures can be dry, the light grading and few assignments make this an easy A. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for reviewing course materials.
Dr. Selesky is a very caring professor, knowing all her students by name and insuring that she is accessible outside of class time. I have taken classes with Dr. Selesky twice now and definitely would retake with her again! Great choice of works to read and fair grading.
karen is very sweet! shes easily accessible via email to answer any questions. there was just a few big assignments and we were given more than enough time to complete them. the lectures are a bit boring but they usually end early which is a plus! she does take attendance every class. there is reading every class but i never did it and was fine!
The class was fairly easy but the lectures didn't feel very useful and were quite boring. She has a monotone voice.
Dr. Karen is one of the best profs I've had at UFV. She is kind and you can tell that she puts her heart into her courses. She picks interesting relevant readings, and aims to inspire students. After taking this course I not only feel equipped for academic writing, but I feel inspired to write. 10/10 would recommend taking a class with this prof!
Karen is really good. She teaches you basics for writing at an academic level, and I know what I learn in this course will be helpful for the other classes I'll have to take. Assignments are steps towards writing your own academic essay and pace is good. Lectures are fun, notes are posted. Some reading outside class but not too much
She was a good prof. and is kind. She definitely wants an in class discussion and active participation. My class had articles or excerpts to read before every class(4-12 pages). I would willingly be in her class again because she does give helpful feedback on your writings.
She gives super good feedback but her class is pretty boring and her instructions on when things are due aren't always clear so sometimes she wants you to hand something in and if you didn't have time to do it, bam out of your grade.
Karen's amazing. She's always willing to help you out with anything such as you're papers and past assignments, She grades them quickly and returns them to you with good clear marking's that you can use on your next assignment overall amazing prof. Definitely recommend, as long as you don't miss any of the homeworks(25% of grade) you'll do amazing
As long as you participate in class, you will get amazing grades
Definitely one of the better professors out of all English professors at UFV. Her lecture aren't really allat but there isnt much to learn anyways, tho she marks easy but not easy enough to give over 90%. she is very kind and understanding, especially with grading. Would recommend!
