She is by far the nicest teacher i had all semester in my first year of college. If you love art, or even like it, you'll LOOVEE the class.I was so interested in class, my mouth was open because it was just so fascinating.Plus she is quirky and very funny.Great profressor, very very easy going.

One of the best professors. Very very interesting. You have to know material, but it's easy and interesting to learn (most of the stuff is learned during the class). Very socialable, friendly, funny. Recommend to all. people get lots of A's.

She is the hardest professor I have ever had. You have to remember a lot of stuffs, extremely a lot. After test, it will be essay due. After essay, it will be another test. You can't even stop or take a break during the whole semester. She will not let you stop. Whatever you do, avoid Shelby.

Great teacher.Lots of material to learn.3 tests and a paper.Shes very cool and helpful.A lot of stuff to memorize but it was an easy A for me.No real complaints from ne1 in the class.Would take her again.This class was a requirement so I didnt even want to take it and she made it cool.

Great teacher! You must pay attention in class, must do assignments, must memorize dates and be able to identify works of art on your own - if you do it you will get and easy A. This class was very interesting and she is a very nice and a very funny professor.

If you enjoy taking massive amounts of notes and lisening to lectures that would put a crackhead to sleep or you just like to do A LOT of work - take this class. If not choose something else.

I lovedddddd this prof. If you like art then take her, she knows a lot about it and is always willing to explain more to you after class or through e-mail. very very helpful if you didn't catch something. extremly easy going and funny, very relaxed and hyper sometimes. lots of notes to take tho.

Best professor in Baruch. She is personable. Covers a lot of material but class is fun and she encourages participation. There are no surprises, just follow her directions and give her what she asks for. She is a fair grader. You'll even get to go on two museum visits with class. Loved the class so much, wish I was an art history major instead.

Best art prof. in Baruch. Super helpful although she goes through lots of material.Fair grader. U have to study for exams use both her notes and the book together.No multiple choice test and two papers.Pay cloose attention in class and u will do fine. Having trouble with papers go to writing center especially if english is not well. The best!

She is the best art history prof at Baruch. She does goes through alots of materials butshe explains everything well. You will be just fine as long as you attend the class. two papers does require some thinking but she will help you out if you ask. Very helpful and interesting prof. Fair grader too. Again, take her if you can.

At first it seems like theres alot of work to do for this class, with readings and papers and test, but it isn't so bad. Two papers and 3 test. Cares more about themes and concepts than dates and artist names. She's very helpful and theres no way you can get less than a B.

Professor Shelby covered a huge amount of information in a short period of time. I wish the school would break this up into two semesters, so that we could have spent more time on each period. She was always fair and never tested us on materials that were not thoroughly covered in class. Highly recommend taking her, especially for ESL students!!!!!

She's enthusiastic and comical. Three big tests (2 Midterms & a Final) and three papers about 3-4 pages each. I advise against getting the textbook as I suspect it's only for background info so you can understand better where the art came from. The tests are fairly easy (quite a bit of remembering though) and mostly on stuff taught in class (not from textbook).

She's a great professor. she complitely changed my opinion about art history i thoguht it was going to be really hard but with her the class is very intersting and clear at the same time. All you have to do is not miss the class and her notes nd you will ace the class just by studing the notes..

Shelby rocks..!!She is fun..you will definitely enjoy the class. It is boring at times but thats how art history is. Don't miss a class and write every damn thing she says in the class. It has to be on the exam. Lot of memorization of names dates and all..but you will get through if you are regular to class..!Good Luck..!!

Her class was the only one that I did not want to miss even once. She makes it very interesting and easy to remember and understand.However, you have to go to museums and write 2 papers about what you see there. Don't postpone it till the very last day and you will be good. Take her and you will never regret!!!

The class was great overall. She is a great professor. In the first test I was in D zone and later I worked hard and ended up getting A-. Great thing is she appreciate your effort. There are lots of memorization, but if you come to class everyday and pay attention to lectures you are good.

She is by far the best professor I have had since starting at Baruch. She keeps class interesting, and explains the material very well. Pay attention, take notes on slide pint outs and you will be fine for the class as long as you keep showing up. A couple of papers but overall not bad. Just a really solid professor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Prof. Shelby is a brilliant lecturer and kept me interested every class. She really knows what she's talking about and will lead you to your own ideas outside of any book. She's not a harsh grader either. Highly recommended.

Total sweetheart! She has a true passion for art history and it shows. Very knowledgeable about a wide range of art styles and periods. Taken her twice. I always enjoyed going to her class. Her tests can seem intimidating, but she is a very fair grader, and you will learn a lot.

Fantastic Prof. Clear, insightful and funny. 2 (easy) papers and 3 exams. Pay attention in class and raise your hand on occasion. A bunch of memorization, but once you get the hang of it it's not so bad. Also, she loves David Hasselhoff. Send her pictures of him for extra credit.

This is the best teacher one can have for arts. She knows her stuff extremely well and her grading is fair too. Classes are interesting if you have even a little interest in art. very helpful in and after class, replies to the mails within no time. thanks to her iphone ;)

She was absolutely amazing. I loved her attitude and teaching style. She actually makes art cool. Just go to class, do the museum projects, and pay attention. I guarantee you will get an A. All you need to do is listen and take amazing notes. Her tests are hard at first but eventually you'll get the hang of things. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!

This course really took my interest in art to a different level and this prof is most responsible for this. She is amazing at what she does and how she teaches. Even in the toughest days she managed to keep all the students alert and interested in the material. I loved her energy. Definitely worth taking. T/B not necessary, good note taking a must.

Shelby is awesome. She was always enthusiastic when teaching her class.I always loved art, and this class increased my interest. Yes, some students did complain about how boring are the slide shows, but hello, without them how would you be able to identify the paintings. The slides are very helpful, and the class notes.

Prof.very intelligent & funny but tests very difficult w/tons of museum visits & papers. There's no need for 6+ museum visits & 2 papers + 5 short papers. Took her cuz reviews were good - guess ART3040 must be her 1st time teaching.Wouldn't recommend taking her. She favors some art major students who took her before. Don't take her for this class.

I had high hopes for this class but was really disappointed with how disorganized it was. I took this in the Fall of 2007, so it's possible she's improved. Personally, I wouldn't chance it again. Her tests were also ridiculously long. When I was taking the class I was one of the few people who managed to even finish the exams, let alone do well.

She's very passionate, likes to keep the class engaging & interesting by telling jokes & stories. I highly recommend taking her, there are 2 papers/ 3 exams, all which are based on the material she covers in class. Textbook will not be needed if you take notes. She's very clear on what she wants & gives out helpful guidelines. I got an A :)

Teacher was engaging. Material was easy enough to learn, the textbook is mandatory for use now. Easy enough, even with the museum trips and papers. SUPER EASY GRADER. I recommend teacher. Tells stories and jokes when relevant. Seems like a lot of work, but in the end really isn't a lot and is really manageable.

One of the best teachers to take for art! Textbook is a must and make sure to take really good notes. Her exams are written, no multiple choice and there are 3 papers. Don't expect to get a good grade without putting in the work. It might seem like a lot but as long as you pay attention, do the work, you will do just fine.

Really nice and diligent professor with flexible hours to go over the slides and art work she used. Drops the lowest exam grade, all exams aren't cumulative except the final. Make sure to take notes of what she explains. PPT are online

Professor Shelby is my fave professor of first semester. Before I started the class, I thought it would be terrible. But she made me want to learn art history. She's a really easy grader & is very funny and engaging. She always responds to e-mails very quickly. I definitely recommend everyone to take Professor Shelby's art history class.

Amazing professor but you need to work for a good grade. 2 museum papers and 3 tests (not cumulative) ... some short 1-page papers but if you answer the questions she gives you it's easy. Wasn't that interested in taking this class but after I had her I'm glad I did... made me want to learn a lot more about art

Karen Shelby is by far one of the finest educators I have had the pleasure of encountering. She is so passionate about her subject matter, and she is always ready to answer questions, even if it's off-topic. Take notes. All of her material is based on the slides, which are on Blackboard. Essays count for a lot on tests. If you can, TAKE HER CLASS.

Took her my first semester at Baruch and would take her again!! Her class is great and she explains what she expects of you. 2 museum papers, 2-3 exams containing questions about the photos in her presentations (very simple if you study the dates, artist, time period, etc.) Was never really interested in art until I took her class!

She's a great professor but you really have to work hard for the A. Her exams are challenging because each exam covers a lot of content from a wide range of cultures. Even if you barely pass her exams (like a C or D grade) but score hundreds or high 90s on her assignments, an A is still possible. She does make this course interesting overall.

Amazing person and professor. The course itself requires you to learn a lot of material. A lot of small reading assignments, 3 tests, and a museum paper. The tests don't count that much so you can still get a good grade if you do well in the other categories.

Lectures consists of PowerPoint slides. Very down to Earth personality (reflected in her grading... which is good). Assigns HW for almost every class which is usually just reading an article and answering her questions (don't forget that there is one due at the first day of class). 3 group projects of making a study guide along with 3 tests.

Good class, you can tell professor Shelby really loves art history. Short readings, 8 pages at most, and a few short answer questions for homework. Two papers, a museum paper and a visit to Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Not hard papers, right about what you saw, no right or wrong answer. Three exams, not hard if you write good notes.

I took Prof Shelby for Museums and Gallery Studies. We took a lot of trips to museums which was a little inconvenient because we were supposed to be there before class started, but they were cool. The lectures are interesting and she's an easy grader. No tests. Only readings and papers. I'd take her class again.

Great professor. Requires some memorization for the tests - I was scared of this before the class started, but it's pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class and take notes. You can tell she really loves teaching Art History and she's pretty funny too. There are trips to the museum but they make good dates :) Take her! You won't regret it!

Whip-smart with a magnetic personalityI mostly take her classes for fun. Lectures have a lot of information in them, yet still manage to stay interesting. Tests are straightforward, grading is fair and there is usually an opportunity for extra credit. there are a lot of good teachers in this department, Shelby is still my favorite.

Great professor. Very nice. Gets on her soapbox now and then and pushes her own political point of view, but she's very caring. Study the powerpoints daily. It's a lot of material to learn and remember. Don't try to cram. Don't bother with a notebook. Print out the powerpoints and take notes right on the images. Study daily and you'll get an A.

Professor Shelby is very passionate about her subject area. She tries to interest her students by teaching with great enthusiasm. She's very sweet and understands how overwhelming the coursework may be. Great attitude; super funny. Only problem was the amount of papers. Not her fault, art department. Very easy grader though! Take her!

Prof Shelby is amazing! Her lectures are entertaining, inspirational and will make you start drawing or painting lol. She is very clear about what she wants in her papers (WRITING INTENSIVE class) and will challenge you in order to become a better art critic . Museums visits and watching movies for a few of the papers! TAKE HER CLASS!!

Took this class as an elective and it was a huge mistake. So much material to learn and was only graded on 4 things. I only failed the midterm and got a C- as an overall grade. Shelby is a wonderful professor and the museum trips were fun, but I would not do it all again.

No matter which professor you take, Art History is a demanding, information heavy class. Professor Shelby makes it just a little bit easier than the others by eliminating the need to memorize minute details. Nonetheless, the class still requires multiple museum visits, quizzes, and tests, all of which amount to an A that you have to work for.

Extremely hard for a basic art history class. So much essays to write and art works to remember. Class is boring. Come on, it's mainly a business school. Not a lot of people would really care about art.

AWESOME! Even though attendance is not mandatory, (you can ask your friend to sign for you) it's necessary for you to listen to her lecture. YOU WILL PASS THE EXAM if you listen carefully can take good notes. After you get used to it, you don't need to study too hard for it, as long as you know the picture and know FORM. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

The best professor in the Arts department at Baruch. Good lecture, makes it interesting and seems very passionate about art and teaching. Professor Shelby is really cool and pretty laid back and understandable which is always a good thing.

extremely passionate and quirky. I'm terrible at remembering facts and dates but she is so dynamic in the way she teaches that even if you pay half attention you'll naturally pick up the information... lectures were accented by endearingly nerdy regfrences to lord of the rings and star wars.

She is the best teacher to take this class with. Karen makes learning about art easy and fun . Make sure you complete all of the online homework's on time, other than that the class is very relaxed and the professor is really cool. Teacher I got an A in this class, If I can do it , you can do it. Stop thinking about it and just sign up

Professor Shelby is one of the few professors that actually make class interesting and fun at the same time. Super laid back and is always easy to reach for any questions and help! The assignments may have been a lot, but for a hybrid class it was reasonable and super easy honestly. Lectures are super fun, you learn more than just art.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? She grades fair and very funny lectures. I learned a lot from her, especially Modern Arts which I hated the most. This class was a hybrid and there were many writing assignments indeed. But, remember, you could do the homework when we didnt meet in class. Also, I did EVERY homework altho I had many writinpapers from other class.

I took the hyrbid course and loved her. It wad alot of writing but nothing crazy. Therr were a fes long essays but most were only a couple hundred words. The only test was the final which she told us what to study. My final was terrible and I did well. If you do your work and show up youll be fine!!

Prof Shelby is great! Her lectures were interesting and her knowledge base is huge. She goes beyond art that happens to be in NYC and goes on to cover how it affects culture. Her readings were pretty thick. She's funny and has a good personality and takes her subject seriously. Do the work for the class, show up, and you'll be good!

I took the hybrid, so attending the lectures wasn't necessary. It is a lot of writing, but it's a hybrid. It's mostly your opinion and perception, so 1000 essays aren't that bad. Just prepare 3 hours a week to dedicate to writing and don't really bother to come to lectures if you take the hybrid. But the lectures were fun and good too

I took her for IDC1001H class given to only Macaulay honors kids and she was pretty good. The class was mostly a lot of field trips to museums and when it wasn't field trips it was lectures. Her lectures are very interesting but can get boring when you haven't slept at all. The only thing we were graded on was blog posts and participation. Easy A

This course was my favorite course this semester and I really do chalk that up to the professor. It's a discussion-heavy course with lots of reading and physical commitments (visiting museums) but her passion for what she teaches is what makes this course so engaging and enjoyable. She tinkers a lot with the syllabus for the benefit of the student.

best teacher at baruch so far! lots of field trips, critical thinking, and zero cost textbook! the writing can be a lot for someone unaccustomed to art analysis but read the guides, listen to her feedback, and get excited to learn about some old dudes who ate paint

Easy class. Towards the beginning of the semester, there was an assignment due every week but it was nothing hard. There was no homework in the mid-semester until the end, in which she assigned us a 2000 word paper. There will be many trips to museums throughout the semester. No textbook required course!!!

Hybrid course is extremely writing intensive. It will make your English class seem like very little writing. Check a syllabus before signing up Professor is very nice and teaches well. Also teaches with a slight liberal bias. However, she blames the curriculum for the heavy amount of writing. She does grade high if you do the papers tho.

Her class is so fun. I never cared about art until I took this class. She's so smart and funny. 3 tests may seem hard but as long as you pay attention in class and know the concepts, it should be extremely easy since you get to pick which questions you do. There are also several papers to do but they are easy. Take her!!Also no HW and textbook.

I went into this class thinking it would be pure memorization, but we had no tests and only had a few homework assignments that were very interesting. We went to a bunch of museums and our final was an in class game, along with a longer paper that we had to visit the NY Historical Society for. She deserves the world I swear.

Art History is not for everyone but Shelby made sure to make it interesting. She is very passionate about the class. We had to visit museums. In the beginning of the semester she gave more homework so that the rest of the semester would be a breeze. We had a final paper and on the day of our 'final exam' we played a game called 'bomb the church'.

She gives alot of feedback on your papers but we write papers every week since we're a hybrid class. Honestly, I think I rather see her twice a week than do the amount of papers we had to do. Shes a nice prof but art history is just a very boring and hard class to pay attention to. She let us re-do papers we werent happy with at the end.

Prof Shelby is pretty laid back and relatable. She also has a great sense of humor. She is somewhat strict when grading writing assignments, but she gives good feedback so it balances out in the end. Nothing but good memories of this class

Honestly, the class was easy. Effortlessly easy. People say lot of work but its not as bad as it sounds. Its a lot, but its do able. You get no test, no finals, nothing else. Just do her work and come to the museum. Easy A. Take her. Shes a bit disorganised, but she cares. And makes class easy.

Shes a pretty nice Professor, you can reach her outside of class too. There is no test for the class I took you just have to complete your assignments. Even though there is a lot but you dont have to purchase any materials the readings are provided to you. If you complete your assignments you can pass this class easily.

At first her class might sound difficult, but if you can attend class and do your assignments, you will 100% be fine. All of her textbooks are provided for free and are not hard to understand. She does give a lot of assignments, but they are doable. Just remember to show up in her class on time, she is not a huge fan of late students.

She gives a lot of assignments. No final test. She's a tough grader in big assignments. Follow instructions for the paper assignments or you'd lose points. She's a great professor and very passionate about art. She inspires and motivates students to appreciate art. I wasn't really into art, but she totally changed my perspective and learnt so much.

take her if you have the chance! at first it might seem like a lot of work but later on it gets easier to do. she's very compassionate about art and she does give a few big assignments (3). She is more stingy grading those assignments but as long as you follow the rubric you'll be fine. Overall, a good prof to take :)

Syllabus: Course assignments. 75% - Attendance 25% (3 allowed) Assignments were weekly homework that followed structure of consuming some material (varing from articles to going to museums) and answering questions based off prompt. Hw 1hr/week avg. I always looked forward to lecture and she is so nice. But be nice to her because she deserves that.

The professor prefers participation and this engages the classroom. Overall, homework is easy just by reading a few pages of an article and answer short-response questions weekly. Attendance is mandatory. As long as you complete your homework and show up to class, you're good to go. No quizzes, exams, mid-terms and finals.

Kind professor who truly likes what she teachers. However, there is a LOT of hw assignments. But tbh 2 hw assignments were equivalent to an exam, so if you did bad on the exam, the hw will make up for it. The class could be unorganized at times, and we are allowed max 3 absences in the class. Otherwise, she wasnt too bad.

Prof. Shelby is caring, but if you want an easy class, this may not be right for you. There are 2+ HWs due weekly and 3 projects; projects require visiting a museum or religious building. There are 3 exams: they aren't worth much, and she canceled 1 exam. There aren't notes on her PPT, making it hard to study and do well if you don't go to class.

The negative reviews about her are correct, so I won't repeat much. Avoid her. More generally, IDC1001H is a course filled with decadent "art", where very few things are worth remembering. IDC, as a whole, must be abolished. By mandating this course, Macaulay shows that it is an unserious institution, other than being extremely overrated.

genuienly one of the best professor in baruch its such a nice and fun class to engage in and you learn so much from her lectures..homeworks a bit much but managable and very easy and 2 exams(midterms) & 1 final. You honestly just by being present in the class will know every material because she explains so nicely. easy A :)

Art history sounds so boring but she made the lectures so fun. 2 HW's a week but it should only take 15-20 mins each. Projects make you visit a museum or religious site, not too difficult though tbh.

Prof Shelby is a funny and kind professor! I would recommend taking her if you have the chance. The only annoying part is that in IDC1001H, there is a manhole project that we are required to do that is borderline vandalism and kind of time consuming. Other than that, I enjoyed her class.

This class is boring and attendance is mandatory. There are 3 hw that required to visit 3 museums and take SELFIES as proof. There are 3 exams, and they're tough! You have to memorize all the images she shows in her slides, and her slides don't have any notes. Be prepared, she goes over time almost every class by 5–10 mins

The professor loves art, but the class is harder than expected. Exams are tough, all based on a lot of visual images, so you have to study a lot. Assignments require going to specific places and taking selfies, which can be annoying and time-consuming. She's extremely strict with attendance—miss three class and it affects your grade.

Loved her! She was such a funny and caring professor and made sure that you really understood the material. The lectures are fast-paced with lots of images that can be on the exam but overall the exams were pretty fair and if you study you'll do great! She also incorporates extra credit in the first two exams that help boost your grade if needed!

Exams are tough if you don't study for it, but they weigh the same amount as a regular assignment. Prof Shelby is entertaining and such a sweet human being who genuinely cares about teaching her students about Art History and her students' success. Will miss her jokes for sure :(

Really nice professor. Her slides are just different pieces of art, so missing or falling asleep in class will definitely make you miss a lot of information. However, she's great at explaining stuff and getting the class engaged. The assignments themselves are okay. Going to the museums can be a little annoying, but it's not the worst.

Professor Shelby has been my favorite professor I have ever had. Her lectures are engaging, fun, and really dive deep into Art History despite the fact that it is a survey class. The homework is honestly super easy, all you have to do is pay attention in class. Could not recommended a professor enough, she's the best!

Karen Shelby is an excellent professor. I had her in Spring 2025, and she is very caring and approachable. She explains the material clearly and genuinely wants her students to succeed. I would definitely take her class again.

This is an interesting and fun professor! Her tests are lecture heavy, but you will have access to the slides to study with, and there would be extra credits (10 points) on every tests, and on the final, she gave us an opportunity to earn EXTRA EXTRA credit (30 points) + a side extra credit (10 points). Easy class if you know your stuff.
