She can be very intimidating when she uses her trange voices, but has a unique and exciting teacher style. Artistic ability and views of technology are something to be desired though.

Karen has got to be the most humane instructor ever. She's so interesting and pleasant, despite her "in your face" attitude in class. A+ for this prof (although she prefers to be refered to as "just a lowly instructor."

A truly original and innovative prof. I looked foward to every class with her! If you are looking to escape the hum drum of other classes, then take this one, you will not be disappointed!

Three or four former Camosun students now in the UVic phil. dept. recently agreed that Karen's classes were the reason we went into philosophy. No higher praise than that.

Familiarity breeds..well..contempt, but once you get past Karen's brisk attitude and annoying habit of putting down people who are foolish enough to attempt answers you'll actually get to like her. Stick the class out and you'll learn lots, like patience.

If you wnt any of this stuff to make sense, take her. She keeps you focused cause she is loud and entertaining. Inviting teacher to talk to, funny.

Karen is hilarious! I absolutely loved her! I can't wait to take another course with her. She's so in your face in class, but she's really sweet. She has an absurd sense of humour that I love. Great prof!

The most amazing teacher I’ve ever had! Karen isn’t for the faint of heart. She’s a bit like marmite, you either lover her or you hate her. Thanks to her enthusiasm towards Philosophy, I am now taking a double major that includes Phil.

One of the scariest teachers I've ever taken. But in a really good way. The material isn't easy, but the class is so much fun and she is one hell of a weird(Good-weird) teacher.

In your face, outrageous, hilarious. Freely admits that she is not entirely opposed to beastialy or infanticide. Take her class, you won't regret it.

She is a very talented teacher who realizes that students are human beings and therefore treats them like people should be treated. I learned so much more than I expeted. I always looked forward to her classes. She makes an effort to get to know her students.Strongly reccomened taking her class.

Karen is a very enthusiastic and charming teacher and is able to convey philosophic ideas effectively. However, she seems to be particularly averse to discussion that is on her own level, such that she favors elementary discussions over deeper philosophical ones.

karen is crazy!!! but she's a great teacher and is very passionate about her work. even if you thought you didn't like philosophy, take a class with karen and guaranteed she'll make you like it.

Nursing Philosophy. Karen is basically insane and i have never enjoyed a class more. I am so sick of all of the lame nursing classes and nursing instructors. Karen is a breath of fresh air. She knows how to have a good time. I'm pretty sure most of my year loved her. Thank you Karen!

Karen, if anything, is fun to be with. Besides that, she creates a real learning environment and treats students as people, not numbers. She's crazy in a good way that entertains everyone. Her tests aren't very hard and her papers are easy once the second draft is done. Great teacher!

hands down my favorite class this semm. Love her as a teacher, and by far the most entertaining class I've ever had. The only class I wanted to get out of bed for. Her teaching style creates a very productive learning environment

takes time getting use to, but after a few classes you realise this stuff is really sinking in, keeps you awake during an 8.30 class, so shes got skills! prepares you well and is a lot of fun. really recommend her.

Karen is awesome! she is one of the best teachers i have ever had. she honestly focuses on philosophy as opposed to grades, she doesnt want this to be hard for you. she is hilarious and eccentric and very, VERY open lol. as a friend told me, once you go karen you never go back.

Karen is absolutely nuts! Who gave her a weapon? The subject matter in class can sometimes be boring or complicated but Karen always makes it dirty and more interesting. I only take Philosophy because of her.

I wasn't all excited about this class going in, but Karen changed much of that. In terms of profs, Karen is top notch. You couldn't really ask for much better.

By far my favourite college instructor. A bit of a shock at first, but she'll have you cracking up in no time.

This class has the potential to be extremely boring, however, Karen's very direct and often provocative approach to breaking down concepts made the class very enjoyable. Not for the sensitive or conservative person. Always fun, good humor, exams were clear, and she marks easy! TAKE THIS CLASS!

good teacher once you get used to her although sometimes a little unclear. if you know the course material you'll do well, even if you're not quite sure what she wants for a test/debate.

Absolutely the best! Loved this class so much. It was extremely entertaining and funny, and I hate to be cheesy, but I really feel like this class changed my outlook on life in many ways.

Karen is the bomb to my diggity. I absolutely adore her! She's hilarious, insanely intelligent, open, honest and respects her students. She's always willing to listen to different opinions, and learns from her students as well. It honestly never felt like a chore coming to class. TAKE HER CLASSES!

Absolutely stir crazy but I loved her. Gives you the answers for the test in advance of the test. Go to class. She explained the propagating book hypothesis by making books appear to have sex and showing us YouTube videos of animals having sex. If you have any interest take her class she will either suck you in or make you hate it.

She's probably one of my favourite profs at Camosun. I laughed so much in class and always wanted to attend. I'm really sad I can't take more classes with her. Highly reccomend as long as you're not too up tight.

Karen is certifiable but that's what makes her so entertaining! The woman is definitely quirky but that doesn't downplay her ability to teach in a clear and concise manner. She makes sure everyone understands the subject matter and encourages speaking in class. I would take any class she teaches just because she's the one teaching it.

Loved Karen! Funny, incredibly intelligent, and very engaging. Can take difficult concepts and dumb them down into understandable ideas so people can follow the class. Would go out of my way to take other classes from her!

Oh Karen is quite the hoot! She is really funny. This class always gave me a good laugh, and she marks fairly and easily. Take a class with her if you get the chance!

I randomly took one of her classes as an elective, and I am sure glad I did! Karen is a hilarious teacher. Her methods are much different than most teachers I have come across and she has a way of making the class environment so relaxed and fun while still providing us with the necessary information. I look forward to more classes with her!

Great course, great instructor. You learn and have fun doing it.

Do not miss this prof. The only reason I woke up on Monday morning was because of her philosophy of religion course. Belly laughs and knowledge inducing. Don't take her class if you get offended easily! You may become the butt of one of her jokes.. but it is all in good fun!

DO NOT MISS OUT. If you want to laugh- and potentially be laughed at ( all in good fun) Karen's class is the one you should take. If I could take all my courses with her I would.

Karen is a must-see prof! Especially for PHIL majors. Funny, compassionate, and brilliant. Someone commented that she only wants you to agree with her. Not my experience at all. We stood in the halls outside class sparring with opposing ideas every week! It was grand. Be aware that Karen is a vocal atheist, but not a disrespectful one.

Karen is the best. She definitely marches to the beat of her own drum. A genuinely good person who just doesn't conform to societal norms! She will respect you for having an opinion, so speak up, and no you do not have to agree with her, although she may tease you a bit ;-)

Karen is an informative and engaging lecturer. Her candour regarding her own life experiences, as well as her self-depreciating humour makes her relatable and approachable. Karen is incredibly empathetic. You can tell she really cares about her students and wants them to thrive. All-in-all, excellent teacher- excellent person.

Karen is one of a kind. Her lectures are anything but boring, and she often demonstrates examples using students and encourages students to participate so they get their seminar marks. If you're taking Phil 104, get ready for some hilarious videos! The only downside is that if you have an opposing view to hers... wherein I'd say, use caution.

Karen's absolutely hilarious and really made the class enjoyable. However, she sometimes makes it a little difficult as she can be a bit too offensive/opinionated. Her lectures are entertaining and informative, it's easy to get a good grade as long as you do the work and she's very approachable if you need any extra help.

Karen Shirley is a very outgoing prof. incredibly hilarious and makes subject matter interesting. She is not for the close-minded individual so prepare to open up. Participation is EVERYTHING, so come prepared to speak up and voice your opinions.

Karen is absolutely awesome. She is so blunt and frank that it's quite refreshing. With Karen you get what you get. She leaves it all on the table. She's also very easy to relate to and uses a lot of her own personal experiences to teach the class

I loved Karen! She is hilarious and her lectures were a lot of fun. There's a lot of discussion in her classes, but being not a great public speaker it was hard for me to get participation marks. She provides a good environment for sharing though - I found her class very comfortable. She is opinionated but genuinely wants to hear your own opinion.

Karen was a great teacher, at the beginning I thought she was kind of crazy, but once you got to know her sense of humor she is super funny and will spend time with you on anything that you don't understand or need some more examples on. Tests are fair and will give you practice exams before hand, overall super great.

One of my all-time favorite profs. A real gem! Knows her stuff, is flexible, passionate, and hilarious.
