Make sure you study for this class.
Never had to read the book; her notes are the best!
Really really good professor, just stay on top of things and you should be fine
don't buy the book
She's the best teacher ever!
shes cool
Best teacher at SJSU. Hard class but learn alot.
Office hours help
One of the best chemistry teachers ever!
best teacher, nice, knows how to teach
been here 3 years.....She's the best by far....wasn't easy but i made it!
Excellent teacher! Lecutres are very clear. Best Chem teacher I've seen so far
excellent professor
very good teacher, funny too
great teacher, difficult class
made a very hard subject easier to cope with.very nice and approachable.
Humor + Male/Female atoms/molecules + Love of chem = Dr. Singmaster!
Great teacher, one of the best at SJSU.
Very interesting professor.
A very helpful and interesting professor and person. I had failed in Chem in Highschool, she made me fall in love with it. Now I am a ChemEngr Major and doing great.
Difficult course but a great teacher
good teacher! challenging course-so stay on top of things and you'll do fine.
Best teacher although the course is hard.
she is really cool. very nice, her teaching is good. very comfortable style. Just go to lecture, if you need help, she's cool with explaining anything without intimidating you or making you feel incompident. class does become difficult though.
you'll love her energetic humorous teaching style. you'll learn more than just chemistry in her class. the course is hard so don't miss lecture. of all the things you hate about san jose state, she's not one of them
EXPERIENCED TEACHER WITH A GREAT TEACHING STYLE. KNOWS HER STUFF AND WANTS TO TEACH CHEMISTRY. VERY TOUGH CLASS AND STUDYING IS ADVISED
She is so sweet! She got me through this difficult subject! Most teachers in engineering should learn her teaching skills!
GREAT LECTURER...tests are really difficult ONLY because she tries to trick you a lot. Time is also pretty limited...but great teacher
She's a really nice person, clear lectures, fun demonstrations, helpful but tricky on tests. Exams harder than practice exams. study hard and practice practice practice!!
She is very helpful, ask her anything. Be careful of her test questions. Read carefully and don't let it fool you. One mistake and the whole problem is wrong.
Very nice and helpful. Hard class..study hard if u expect to pass and be careful of her midterms..they tend to be very tricky. Final is relatively easy, however
Singmaster is the BEST teacher at SJSU go to her office hours for sure and you will do good, the class is hard but she is AN EXCELLENT teacher, she makes chemistry fun and will make you like it.
Best teacher in the school. Only professor who really cares about students. Class is very challenging but she gets you through it if you are serious about it.
11A is no longer offered so 1A is now in place of it. If possible, take smaller class size. She tends to be more fun when the class is small. Uses good analogies in getting the material through and can be funny at times. One of the few great profs at SJSU
This teacher is one of the nicest teachers that I had so far.. even though the exams may be a little bit tough, she is always willing to help her students. She makes lectures fun with her stories and experiments. Take advantage of her office hours!
Singmaster rocks! She makes chemistry fun with some of her analogies, stories, and in class demos. This class is fairly passable, one must get her lecture supplement (notes, old tests) from the printshop, it's very helpful.
From what I have seen, Singmaster has one of the best lecture styles at San Jose State. Her voice is clear and so is the format of her lectures. The material is general chemistry, the tests are tricky, and the labs are okay. Have fun.
this is a the best teacher you could ever imagine. she not only cares about her students but is super clear, test are only moderately hard.
She is an excellent chemistry professor and really nice person. The only Professor to consider if taking Chem 1A. I've had lecture with other professors and is Singmaster definitely the best Chemistry Prof. at SJSU.
Best chem teacher I have ever had, actually cares about the students and makes concise effort to teach what she LOVES! Recommend to anyone, exams however can be tricky, study a lot!
she is so hot!!!!! the best chem teacher ever!!!whew have tu calm down from hur hottness!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best teacher I have ever had. It is inspirational to see how much she has done in her past. She works nonstop for her students, and she breaks chemestry down to simple concepts.
the best chem prof in the entire world.make the course clear and really helpful to all the students not only about chemistry but also about other classes that you taking.give u the best idea n that is why we call she is a "great professor"
What more can i say that hasn't been said already...overall great teacher, just the course is tough because of all the memorization...other than that you are guaranteed a great time in her class
Back when Chem 11A was required for engineering majors, I took this teacher. She seems like a nice lady but her class was WAY TOO HARD - like 50% of the class failed! Her exams were insane, and the labs were impossible for most.
One of the best profs. Clear, knowledgable, not too demanding. If you take notes, and do the assignments, the class is a piece of cake. Otherwise, its a living nightmare.
She was just crazy.
great teacher, cares bout her students, puts things into context; relates material to real world, I just loved her...she made me feel proud to be in Science
Very clear, relates material to real life, interesting in class experiments, funny/can keep your attention, but she is hard. *Although you will be prepared for Chem 1B......Dont skip class! I repeat do not skip class!
great teacher. especially considering how difficult the course was. i recommend her for anyone who needs to take this class. keep in mind the class is real hard, but use her office hours. she is more than willing to help.
Really a difficult teacher, the majority of the class failed. Her exams are really tough, but she does make herself available to help out students if they are struggling.
Good lectures, and really cares about students and helping them succeed. Tests are BRUTAL! Not difficult, but she packs them so full you're under a lot of time pressure. The plus side is that a 50% in the course puts you on the good side of F.
The good side is that she is fascinating. Funny teacher as hell! Make the course easier than it sounds. The bad side is that she likes to jam the test as thick as a brick. Dont' mind the length, but the material is tricky! Use office hour
The best chem prof ever.I took her both for Chem 1A and 1B.Who care about her test is hard.important is that u learn.this is university, not high school. She teaches the best and i hope she teaches other upper division chem courses, office hour really help
she's one of the best teachers at SJSU. she makes her best effort to make sure everybody understands the material. If someone tells you her tests are hard, it's just because it's kind of long for the class period.
Dont giveup hope on Singmaster! I passed her class after 3 sem. Other Chem1A profs like Fleming or Silber not as good. Her tests r difficult cuz in 3 pgs, u either knowitornot in 50 min. Always attend lecture so u wont miss bonus quiz. Lab tests r easier.
Dr. Singmaster, is the best professor at SJSU. She is tough yet fair, and is ALWAYS willing to help, advise, and be a friend to the students. There isn't enough room to describe all wonderful qualities she has.
dr. singmastes's courses are challenging but she teaches the subject great. she is very good at explaining
very funny teacher, always relating alcohol and cars to chemistry
I thought it was annoying that she tried to intimidate everyone the first few weeks of class. I personally think thats making it worse. The class itself is pretty easy. Just study her lecture book thingy.
Im convinced she is a wizard of some sort.Even her name Dr.singmaster...vary wizard like! shes great though. Made lecture fun plus she gives good advice for about 5 min. before she starts teaching.
Lectures great, keeps you awake even if you're tired. Some of her inclass examples are great. She knows what she is doing. Gives great advise to every major at the start of every lecture before class begins.
Dr. Singmaster is definately the best professor at SJSU. Even with my complete lack of interest in chemistry, hers is my favorite and most interesting class. Pass or not, you will learn a huge amount in her classes and have fun while doing it.
She is a great prof. tries to intimidate at first to get as many students as she can out and then after a few weeks she changes attitude, and becomes understanding and very helpful and encouraging. She is one of the best prof. the only one that if you go to her office hrs will remember your name.
Dr. Singmaster is a very good professor. She knows what she is doing. The class is really hard (but fair), but don't get discouraged. She loves to help if you just ask.
prof. singmaster is probably the best teacher i've ever had. this is one of the tougher classes for freshman/sophomore no matter who you take, but she does her best to make it as easy as possible
very good teacher, one of the best at campus. explains everything and makes everything very clear. third test is the most difficult. hard teacher but very fair and consistent. extremely organized and returns tests back quickly. great teacher.
Excellent prof. Intimidating at first to weed out slackers; after that, one of the best profs. Explained material well, gave real-world examples of certain chemicals. Very professional, also good sense of humor.
This Prof. is just great! I liked the class a lot, though it was a lot of work and effort you have to put in. Lectures are pretty straight forward just read and do the exercises in her booklet. She also has a great sense of humor which makes the class interesting and she also shows some Demos in her
Hardest freaking class of my life.Tip for new students: DO NOT GET BEHIND. Memorize those ions early on and you will be ok. Singmaster is a very good teacher, but if you are behind in the class you wont know what she talking about.
I need to say Singmaster is the best lecture professor there is in Chem department. But don't let this fools you. Learn your stuff as soon as she goes over it. If not you will fall behind and you shall fail like no others. Trust me. My friends think she is ezy and neglect the hw. AFter that she fail
im failing that class atm...i need to catch up for the second midterm...the way to pass that class is to STUDY!!! and pay atention in class...dont lag behind!!! she's a nice prof and a FUNNY ONE TOO..thats what makes her a good prof...but shes really hard...the class is super diffcult!!!
Hardest class of my life and yet the most fun of them all!! She's a great prof. and funny too. The way to get through this class to is MEMORIZE! And when she says to go over things do it! TWICE and of course practice can't hurt you!
She is a very good proffesor. Her lectures are very enjoyable and easy to understand. Her exams are not hard; they are similar to the exams from last semester. You just have to pay attention in class and lab and do practice problems in the workshop and at home to get an A in this course! Not that har
Pros: 1. Explain things clearly and effectively 2. Makes learning fun. 3. Does not go too fast on explaining things.(good!)4. Some quizes she hands out are not due untill next week which allows u more time to work on it. Cons: Oh wait! Pros: She also gives out FREE EXTRA POINTS TOO!!! Cons:LOL NONE
class is really hard. you must go to the workshops and stuff in order to do well. period. she is a great teacher, funny and will go out of her way to help you. class had TONS of students in a lecture hall, yet she still knew a lot of students names. alters her grading scale to help people pass.
two words: SINGMASTER ROCKS. period. I HATED chem before her class, but her charisma and many hilarious examples of how chem actually relates to life made me love chemistry. in order to pass, you will have to study a lot. i've aced pretty much every course i've ever taken with almost no studying, but spent hours studying to earn the B i got here.
One of the best professors @SJSU! The course content was pretty hard (lots of studying, and the chem workshops help!), but she makes the material very clear in lecture. Good sense of humor, great stories and analogies, approachable for help. Makes chemistry fun to learn.
She is an awesome prof. It's an easy class as long as u do ur work every week. Her tests are tough but can be done wid a little work.Try to do well on the lab & things shud be fine.Do take her if u want to learn chem and get an A.
Great Lecturer Do the homework, and the problems in her notes and you will do fine. Tests are hard, but you learn so much.
Dr. Singmaster is so nice and a great teacher. A bit challenging, but u learn a lot. Do the homework, come to every class, do workshop if you can. She is totally there for her students when it comes to help. Office hours are very helpful, she's there a lot. Great class!
She changed my views on chem (I used to hate it). She is a wonderful and funny prof offers the best advice to new students. Her class promotes a very good experience and if you find a way to be successful, then you will be successful at sjsu no problem. Take her for 1B if you can. Dont miss out on days when she blows**** up!!
She is the BEST chem teacher!!!!!!!!! take her and she'll definitely make learning fun ... she gives extra credit and curve grades in order to help those who are doing bad ... she's very nice and helpful too ^^
she is awesome, funny, always willing to help and knows what she is talking about...totally recommended.
let me just start by saying i really hate chem. basically show up every day. if you knew chem well going in and know algebra its a breeze but a bit tedious. just show up everyday and you should pass with out too much difficulty
Her tests are okay except for the final exam. a stupid multiple choice standardized exam that covers both chem 1a and 1b topics. damn that was tough. if you want an easy "A," i suggest you take 1b with Mayer instead. that dude is much easier than her. also, she brings up so many not-funny, irrelative jokes during her lectures. i hate her w passion.
Dr. Singmaster is a great professor. She gives many quizzes that are fairly easy and they all cover the topics she talks about in class. She is so funny in class and she makes Chem 1A more interesting than any other teacher. I want to learn Chemistry because of her, and will continue my goal in science due to her fantastic teachings. She is great.
A VERY difficult class, although she makes it a lot better with her great personality and funny analogies. Exams are WAY too difficult, and are far more advanced than what hse teaches in lecture or lab. But you'll have fun with liquid nitrogen and expolding balloons at the end!!
I had her F05 and she is an excellent teacher. It was a really fun class. She likes to blow up things! definitely do the practice exams and you don't need the book, but do get the lecture notes.
she is an amazing lecturer...never thoguht id enjoy chem like i did...her lectures are really important to the exams...the textbook is worthless...honestly i wouldnt have passed chem with any other professor...take her class!!!!
Buckle up ! You have a lot of work to do. Only if you can run as fast as she does you will get an A. ..... read the book too even though she says it is not necessary! .... GREAT Teacher
Great teacher. offers workshops and office hours to help out. go to her and get to know her and she will wnat to help more and more. tests are hard lots of practice to do. best teacher i have had.
Best teacher I ever had! She is very helpfull if you go into her office. Everything she teaches is clear and precise. Warning that you should take a lower chemistry before going into Chem 1A and she will tell you this the first day.
She's by far the best teacher that I've had at SJSU. The class is hard no doubt about that, but she makes the class interesting and fun. She's always willing to help during office hours, and via e-mail. If you'll be taking chem 1A, Singmaster is the one to take
it was by far the best prep class ive taken..and the time went by really fast...the TA's were really halpful too...she is a really nice teacher and not only knows alot about chem but alot about the school services...she is my fav teacher so far!
You will not be bored in this class. Chem is not easy, but she will help. She also tries to scare you a bit the first few days to weed people out. If you are taking Chem 1A, take Singmaster. Highly Recommended.
Loved lecture, she really made things easy to understand.
She is an awesome professor. Willing to help, she goes out of her way to help you. She even works overtime to get your tests back to you in a timely manner. By far the best professor at SJSU. The class is hard, but she is the best chemistry teacher I've ever had.
By far the best chemistry teacher I've ever had! She seems tough, but she does almost everything to help you and set you up for success.
BEST teacher i've had in SJSU
This is my first semester at SJSU. singmaster is the best teacher for Chem 1A. her lecture are really good and do not buy the book because you are not going to use it. easy A teacher... approachable during office hours...the exams are really exam , but you have to study.
she was an awesome teacher, her lectures were really good and helpful. if you go to class you will pass the class forsure. take the practice exams because sometimes the same questions are on the exams! if you study and go to class you will pass forsure she is the BEST CHEM TEACHER dont take any others.
She is the best professor I've had at SJSU. She is seriously miles above any other professor here, she should be teaching at berkeley.
She goes out of her way to help you when you need it. Even when it is not her office hour, she is still in her office-willing to help you if you need it. She works around the clock for her students, BY FAR the best teacher at SJSU. Many of the professors, ESPECIALLY Dr. Soto can learn alot from her as far as teaching/attitude goes.
Great teacher, but very intimidating. If you are a chem major, I don't reommend taking her because she will scare you into never wanting to take another chem class again. For a lower division chem class, she needs to ease up a bit on the material, and not "trick" us on tests. She would be perfect for upper division classes though.
I wish ALL my professors were like her. This class is VERY difficult, but she is always right there to help you when you need it. She even sat with me and flipped through the pages of a "how to study" book. I LOVE this teacher, I wish she taught all my classes! I would have a better attitude toward school and definetly be more knowledgable.
She is great at explaining and has hilarious analogies. Also, she blows up stuff in class occasionally! Great teacher for sparking interest in chemistry.
She is an amazing professor of stagering quality. Take her class. If chemestry is not your thing, take the chem workshops they are helpful
Reasonable and understanding teacher. She sets up her class to be challenging and interesting. Go to lectures and do practice problems if you have the time. Definitely do the practice tests and study hard. You can learn a lot from her.
Great Teacher!
If you want to really learn General Chemistry, take Dr. Singmaster. She is truly an amazing teacher. She has a way of explaining things that students can understand. She goes out of her way to be available to help her students. Her exams are challenging, but if you study the lectures and practice exams, you'll be fine. BEST TEACHER AT SJSU!! :)
She is an excellent professor. She really cares about her students doing well and creates many opportunities for you to get help. It is not an easy subject but taking general chemistry with her will definitely help you if you use the resources she gives. She is also funny, the best professor I have had since I've been in college.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! She won the outstanding professor award at SJSU and she definitely deserves it! CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR. If you cannot take her this semester then wait another semester (if you can afford to) and take her then. She makes chemistry really fun and interesting. She makes excellent analogies to help us understand.
She is an EXCELLENT professor!!! She makes sure she explains everything clearly. Her analogies are sooo funny that you really remember them on tests. She is so good that I am making sure to have her for Chem 1B
One of the best chemistry teachers in the world. Although her tests are hard, she makes you very well prepared for them. I didn't even pick up my book cause she had so much detail in her lecture and I understand her more than the book. She's also really hillarious during lecture. I always laugh. I think everyone should have her.
Amazing professor! She goes out of her way to be available to assist students. This class was really hard and I spent an enormous amount of time studying for it but I really enjoyed it overall. Take a workshop. Memorize your ions (she's not kidding when she says you need to). Do practice problems. You don't need the book but it's a good reference.
One of the best teacher in SJSU,passionate, well knowledge and willing to help your develope your interest in Chemistry even it is outside of the class content. I was never interested in Chemistry, but she just proved me wrong. Again, best Chem teach your can get.
She is the best teacher! I learned so much and I looked forward to coming to class! Her tests are hard, but she is funny and covers everything in lecture. She is always willing to help! Take the class!
Like everyone says, she is VERY good teacher, but challenging. Her level of difficult requires a lot of studying and no slacking. She has very nice writing and clear notes. She always seems busy and her office hrs and usually full of students, but is willing to help. Do well on test and make sure to take a workshop--they HELP!
Chem IB is much more in dept and detail than IA. She requires more assignments, like quizes. No seminar, which is great. Most of grade is from the lecture and most of the lecture grade is the exams. So make sure to do well on them. Be careful on exams because she tries to trick her students. Again, take a workshop, they are helpful.
totally recommended. A very good teacher. Try to score your best on the first exam. It's the easiest out of the three (personal opinion). Try not to skip her lectures, you'll probably fall behind if you do. Definitely try to take workshop if you can, it's very helpful. Easy A or B if you study, understand the materials, and complete all the work.
Great teacher! I was a Freshman in my first semester and made the transfer to college easy as pie. She even allowed me to move my final up a few days so I could go home for the holidays sooner.
She's simply too good for SJSU. Her lectures are AMAZING. Her tests are exteremely hard, but doable. Make sure, if nothing else, you take a workshop - they're pretty much a must if you want an A or B in the class. Don't miss lectures. She lectures on everything so you never even have to open the book, just practice problems an hour a day.
Great professor, it was my first time learning chemistry ever and she made it almost easy. Make sure to work and study with other people, because it's tough to pass Chem1A alone. She makes chemistry fun (believe it or not) and relates the subject to things relevant to the real world. Her tests are tough though, watch out for those tricky Qs.
Lectures are helpful but she gets around to only one example of each type of problem... She's interesting and gives lots of other helpful info about school, life, etc. She doesn't review before exams and expects you to group study on your own if you need to. helpful in office hours if you need... overall hard class. Lab is difficult and boring.
SHE'S AMAZING! I love chemistry because of Dr. Singmaster. Take chem with her for sure. Study in a group, it's the best way to succeed in her class.
You MUST put in a lot of time to succeed in this class and not get behind. Overall great teacher but difficult class.
Unreasonably difficult class/professor. Worst class I've ever taken. You get points docked in lab if you don't come within 1% of actual value. Wasted my time, money, and destroyed my goal of doing medical research in the future. I used to have a competitive GPA for med school. SJSU is a joke.
Dr. Singmaster is a very intelligent woman - her knowledge of chemistry is very prominent in her lectures. Chemistry is an extremely DENSE subject though. I'd recommend to review after every lecture to retain the information or you may be surprised how much you don't remember when studying the week before one of her killer exams. Amusing but tough.
attend every class if u want at least a B.review every lecture after and b4 class.she knows her stuff and will test u on everything she lectures so study!study groups and worksps HELP!makes chem funand interesting-links to real life chemicals like the comet bathroom cleaner and lysol claener.take HER!!!
She is the most amazing professor I have ever had. I think everyone who needs to take introductory chemistry needs to experience this class.
She is amazing!!! The best chemistry teacher ever!! Knows what she does...and makes lectures super clear!! Yes her exams are tough but if u study hard you will get a good grade! She offers a lot of help through several sources!! Great teacher
Really good professor. I thought she would be hard, but it was not as bad as I thought. She is quite clear, knows what is doing, and has a very good sense of humor. Tests are not so difficult; she gives you previous exams from past years. If you get her, you will have a blast. I sure did. If you have questions, talk to her afterwards.
Possibly the best professor on campus... no joke. Very clear and patient. Great sense of humor (class is very entertaining). Easy to talk to overall a very nice lady. Go to lecture because they are helpful and kinda fun.
Best instructor I have ever had. If you have to take chemistry, make sure you get her as an instructor.
Recommend her. She's awesome with a good sense of humor. Very funny sometimes. Her lecture isn't boring and makes sense if you pay attention to it. Uses analogy to help understand information on chem. Her midterms aren't so bad if you understand the materials really well.
She is a very helpful teacher she does a good job in lectures but if you don't go you will fall behind. Her exams can be tough but she is always willing and wanting to help. Great teacher loves what she does.
She makes chemistry NOT boring. She is funny and witty with her teenage analogies to help us better understand concepts. The exams are fair game; the grade you get is what you get. I'm really impressed that a teacher like her actually exists. haha. Take Dr. Singmaster!
Excellent professor! Made chemistry actually fun and exciting. Go to lectures; they're helpful and useful.Even if they aren't, she has some great stories and analogies that make this class unforgetable. Exams are fair; you earn the grade you get so keep up with everything and don't fall behind. GREAT professor!
She is an enthusiastic professor that absolutely loves her 1B class. She says at the beginning of 1A that we won't need the book. Get your hands on past exams--they tend to repeat similarly based problems. 1B lab really teaches the techniques you'll need for upper division lab courses.
She turns chemistry concepts into funny, easy to remember analogies. She's dedicated, energetic, funny, nice, hard-working and is open to students who need help. Highly recommended!
One of the greatest teachers I have had. Tests can be very difficult at times but if you put the work into them you will see the benefits. Class is always fun and she personally is all about Chemistry and helping her students out. If you got to her office hours she will help you. You will work but learn a lot from her!
Very fun class, great sense of humor, the material are not so hard to grasp if you go to all of the lectures. tests are no so easy yet not so hard. Know your math and concepts and you'll be fine. The best professor I had so far.
Dr. Singmaster is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She becomes like a mentor for you about how to transition and what to expect in college and her course. Her lectures are interesting and useful. I recommend her 100% but be warned, you will have to work hard. In the end it will be worth it though!
Lecture. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful. One of the better professors on campus. Makes short anecdotes here and there. Study and read is a must to pass this class. I recommend taking the workshops too!
very good teach. you would learn a lot and not be bored. the workload and stress can pile up if you are even a day absent or lazy though.
What a breath of fresh air. Perfect teacher to get you interested in Chemistry, she is also a fair grader and test material is balanced. Watch out for lab though.
One of my fav professors! Material is hard, but she explains it well. No homework, exams are scantron and addt'l partial credit questions (except for final). Even though class is not mandatory a majority of test material is from lecture.
Great teacher. Not an easy teacher but a very good one. If you take her class expect to learn a lot and become very interested in the subject. Not too much homework and the tests aren't too bad as long as you go to class and go to labs.
I'm so grateful I had her for 1A. She makes class so fun with her analogies and frequent storytelling. I was never a fan of chemistry, but she sure changed that for me. Her tests are very tricky, read all the questions well before answering!
she is a great teacher. I have her for Chem 1B right now. Her tests are based off her practice exams. Do not slack and attend class. don't be afraid to take this class just be focused and learn when she is teaching you and practice. gets stressful but its proll your fault you slacked . She makes me want to actually major in chem.
Such a smart, funny & involoved prof; enthusiastic about chem! Hard class(must study, suggest going to workshop) BUT I think she makes chem pretty understandable. Take home quizzes and 3 exams = lecture grade.STUDY!She gives the basics & tells stories related to topic but doesn't always go into detail. Take time out of class to learn more in depth.
Hands down. One of the best professors at SJSU. She is very clear on what you need to know, very helpful mentor in life, passionate about teaching, and a very nice person. Take her if you can, I took her for 1A and 1B, I wish she can teach ALL chem classes... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Awesome professor!
amazing professor! not only teaches but gives real world examples related to topic covered! Singmaster's the only professor that teaches 1B. Pay attention, study her notes, and do all the assignments.
She an absolutely amazing professor. You NEED to find time to study on your own however, because sometimes she doesn't go into depth on some of the material. Overall, she's very funny and tries to keep your interest in this tough class with her analogies and stories. I definitely recommend her.
Singmaster is amazing! Very passionate and knowledgeable of Chemistry. This class requires a lot of time and studying. Don't slack off! Her exams are similar to the practice exams, do ALL the practice exams and study a little more and you should be fine. Lab exams are based on the lab notebook, study it well and ask questions!!
She is a great lecture professor especially compared to the alternatives! She is tough but she really knows how to get everything u really need to know across and she cuts out any fluff. Also go see her during her office hours she will actually look at you when u speak to her and will help u out tremendously. Some find her intimidating but she is really nice an a great resource for the rest of your college career!
My favorite Chemistry teacher. Awesome analogies that make remembering the info easier. Goes beyond just chemistry, too. Relates it to the real world, is helpful about reminders related to the university and is absolutely brilliant in Chemistry. She can seem a little fast-paced if you compared her to others, but it works out somehow :)
Terrible no help at all , better learn how to teach yourself.
The quizzes and exams were difficult. Her seminar lecture is pretty pointless to stay in due to the fact that she just regurgitates the lab manual. When you finish the quiz, just leave because from my experience, she says nothing important during seminar.
Very good teacher. Don't listen to the people complain saying her class is hard, that just means usually that they didn't put enough effort into the class. At the end of the day it's a 5 unit class, you need to put effort in to get a good grade. Overall great teacher. Take her.
Singmaster is probably the best Chem 1A teacher there is. She is GREAT in terms of teaching the concepts to students. She will occasionally joke around during lectures but she is very organized and intelligent. You must spend a fair amount of time practicing for her tests because if you don't, they will burn you bad. Don't slack and you'll pass.
She's a great teacher who genuinely wants the best for students, but she doesn't cut you any slack if you don't show up and make her class seem like a joke. This course is definitely more manageable if you had a solid chem class in the past, you'll pass. Just be prepared to work hard. Best teacher for Chem 1A hands down.
Her lectures are very informative. She'll help you with anything if you go to her. Really fun teacher to learn from.
good.
She is very knowledgeable but that doesn't mean she is a good teacher. She skips information, and her lectures are very fast paced. Class avg. for all the tests were always in the D range. Because chem is easy for her, she goes about the class like it's really easy and expects students to think the same. Don't waste your time with her class.
I won't deny she's very knowledgeable but that doesn't make her a good professor. Lectures are drawn out with useless forced analogies, practice exams and answer keys are inconsistent, never gives back exams or quizzes so you can learn from mistakes, often gets sidetracked during lecture and usually only teaches about half the duration of class.
Good teacher if you buy the work book you wont need the textbook. Make sure to memorize the ions in good time
The test are hard. On average I've received 86% on the first two midterms. There is a third, but I have not taken it yet. She makes up a lot for my terrible seminar instructor. I got a 99% on the first lab exam. Planning to do well on the next lab exam too. Overall I have a 89 in Lecture and a 94 in lab. If not for her I'd probably be failing.
Test are hard, but she gives you advice on where and how to get help. Lectures were nice and she is funny. Take a chem workshop... it helps.
She's awesome.
She is so smart, and her lectures have good life lessons in them. She is very specific on what will be on tests, and in what format. If you do the study guides for tests, you will do well. Sometimes offers extra credit, and is always willing to talk, not just about the class, but about anything.
Dr. Singmaster is well respected and is a good lecturer. She is also very specific about the grading criteria etc, which is great. However, she is quite intimidating to approach especially for shy, introverted students. Her lectures also go VERY fast and she NEVER reviews before exams. She squeezes in as much material as she can until the dast day.
Tests are hard and includes a lot of problems that we haven't done before
You need to develop a habit in order to pass this class. You need to constantly read before the lecture, then attend the lecture to further understand. It is a big-time commitment but once you get the habit down you are alright!
First day of class she brings up how she wonders why she was selected to be the CHEM1B prof, and let it be known she is Department chair of Chemistry at SJSU. Aside from that she expects a lot from students, esp during lab and tests. On her tests she puts down questions that weren't discussed in class to try and find cheaters. Amazing :/
Listen here, with online classes being a thing, this professor talks you through the lesson and gives you uploads of her work on canvas. She is very easy to talk to, and is very inspirational inclass and online. She does have a couple of spies in Chegg and yahoo answers tho, a couple of my classmates got caught asking for finals and exam question
Very good teacher, but will scare you before the semester starts. Every lecture is basically how hard the class is. We, get it. Its a hard class. But, scaring everyone dosent help.
Professor Singmaster is such a great professor. She does the most to help out her students. She literally writes the notes and uploads it onto canvas just in case if you didnt get everything down. Yes her tests are hard but if you do the practice exams along with workshop an de SI session worksheets you will do great!
Shes very knowledgeable about chemistry, but Im not sure she really knows how to teach it. She talks a great deal about preparing future MDs, scientists, engineers, etc. but, IMO, 1B is 90% of the textbook and 10% Singmaster. You REALLY need the book for concepts and do problems! Professor is just kinda there to show you visually, but not teach.
Professor Singmaster... what a great professor. Too bad Im really lazy and not chemistry-oriented. Shes very knowledgeable and her lectures apply real life situations, BUT I have to agree that its 90% textbook (&yourself) and 10% her lectures. She expects you to know the material in textbook. Study hard and youll pass the class.
Not sure how great she was when it was in person, but with online she grades horribly, giving questions that were never taught and then blames the students for not studying enough. Tests basically decide most of your grade and if you email her for help she replies aggressively and doesn't help at all. Might as well find a diff professor to take it.
She is nice but it is a hard class. Some of the instructions can be unclear.
It is hard online and the lectures don't help.
Very disappointed in this professor. Doesn't teach anything about chemistry, but gives difficult exams. Thinks she's funny but is actually very ludicrous! Teaches chemistry at an pre-school school level. Then expects students to know college level chemistry. Needs to make her grading equal to her teaching level!
I absolutely did not like this professor one bit, very passive-aggressive. Her worksheets did not ever add up to her test. Overall very rude, if you can avoid taking this course or any course under her control do it.
Don't have her as a professor. but she does out quizzes. there are things that haven't really been taught. Not a lot of time to complete them. its like she wants you to fail. i think the quizzes should be give by the lab professors that would only be fair since its based on their classes. It seems like she just wants to find people who cheat.
Whether you have her or not, she plays a major role in your 1A and 1B exams. Took AP Chem in high school so I was able to get a good grasp in the material. But seeing the exams, it's like it's designed to fail you. Chemistry does not have to be hard but as the chair, she blows the course out of proportions.
Dr. Singmaster writes all the lab curriculum for Chem 1A but does not teach directly. Quizzes and tests were definitely challenging as all lab activities were entirely online. The lab content is doable if you take advantage of other resources (workshops, office hours). Tough professor but one who teaches skills you will use beyond the course.
Singmaster is in charge of the lab curriculum for chem 1A and 1B. She is very harsh and insensitive with students and it honestly seems like she wants you to fail. I still got a good grade in the class but I didn't appreciate having to deal with her.
She's a very difficult person to deal with and doesn't care about the wellbeing of students. Follows everything by the book and doesn't really want to adjust to the situation at hand.
This class is doomed to fail you. You're expected to do so much in a little amount of time during quizzes and tests. Just take chemistry somewhere else because man. .
I think she does a disappointing job representing the Chem department because doesnt seem to consider the students failing as to her at fault instead of us the students. She keeps mentioning about cheaters in the class which yes I understand but that doesnt give a reason to make it difficult for the other students who done nothing wrong.
The class is challenging and depends on your ability to memorize concepts, as exams are closed book. That being said, if you're looking for a challenge or are passionate about chemistry, she will definitely be the one for you, because she prepares you so much for the next class, Chem 1B. Take her class and you'll be one step ahead of the others.
I know my grade looks bad but, its because of her. She makes it so stressful for no reason and many students failed because of that reason. If she really care about students success, maybe she should change her way of grading instead of complaining about the cheaters. Like who cares if those students are cheating! We want to learn and pass!
Bad teacher. Runs the department but frequently makes mistakes and intentionally puts exception to the rule confusing or trick questions on exams and quizzes. Not good at teaching concepts often gives out conflicting information. Needs to be replaced as department chair for the good of the department and its students. Avoid if you value your grade.
Karen Singmaster is a good professor and Chem 1A at SJSU is a very difficult course. Her exams were hard but if you study and learn the material, you will be just fine. Go to her office hours and ask for help. If you need to take Chem 1B, be sure to get at least a 'C' because that is the prerequisite. She is a hard professor but you will learn lot.
Do not take this class.
The professor is the head of the Chem Department at SJSU and thus her the quality of all the classes are ruined by her influence. At the start of the semester I had emailed to notify her that I had broken my arms and that I needed her patience with finishing assignments late, she in turn responded stating that I should have dropped the course.
Honestly the worst. Take this class at a CC if you want to preserve your mental health.
Decent lectures, gives occasional EC opportunities, Prof. Singmaster is a caring person if you ask questions after/outside of class. Take the Chem 1A Prep Course seriously and you'll do well...
As long as you study a little bit as you go you should be fine. I didn't study the first half of the semester and struggled but she sometimes offers bonus points that really help boost your grade. Recommend going to lecture as much as possible and do the practice exams.
She is an extremely overrated teacher. Her teaching of chemistry makes no sense at all, and her lab manuals are very confusing. She makes a bunch of mistakes when teaching the concepts. This is a chemistry professor? Just wow! Can't believe she was even hired and tenured. One of the worst instructors I have ever had in my life!
She might seem a little rough, but she is super friendly if you actually talk to her. The subject itself is challenging and it makes people take out their frustration on her. Her lectures are thorough and the homework really prepares you for them. She gives a lot of extra credit and leniency with grading. She is super motivating as well.
she's ok. in my opinion she's the better 1b lecturer, but she's no dr. e. i had a rough time adjusting to her style, and in the end went back to dr. e's lecture videos for 1b on youtube to learn most of the content, supplemented by khan academy and ochem tutor. you can mess up one test as long as you do well on the others, so there is some leniency
Dr. Singmaster made me change my opinions about chemistry and academia. She was unconfident and unprepared. Her explanations never made any sense, and were wrong. She just accuses you of being a bad student if you ask her questions. This made me never want to study chemistry again. I learned from her that professors don't care about student success
Dr. Singmaster is definitely the tougher of the gen chem professors, but she is definitely great at her job, especially as the department chair. You can tell that she does care about the success of her students, although she may seem rather intense. If you're scared of taking her class, don't be. Just put in the effort and you'll pass, don't worry!
Dr. Singmaster's class was a real challenge. While the material itself wasn't too difficult, her teaching style and grading made things unnecessarily stressful. Thankfully, resources like unstuck study helped me stay on top of the workload. Overall, not the best experience, but I endured.
A horrible professor who has no idea what she is doing. But if you want to cheat in exams for any class, make sure to do it in her class. Singmaster says she won't turn in any students who cheat on exams because it's hard to prove it.
Hardheaded with no empathy for students. Does not care that emergencies occur and thinks everything should be done her way. She thinks she's the boss of the world and acts and speaks like it. Terrible personality and takes her faults and anger out on students. Bad human being to begin with, and it becomes worse when she's in charge of anything.
Dr. Signmaster is a great professor for students who like things overexplained. She doesn't give out a lot of homework, and gives a lot of studying time for exams and the final. All of the notes are updated to Canvas, and she posts the answers to the previous test and quizzes. Overall, this was an easy class.
The chem dept. should seriously reconsider their choice for head of chem, her behavior consistently demonstrates a lack of empathy, consideration, respect, and professionalism. It is concerning that she is in a position where she can disregard students' needs and treat them disrespectfully, which is not appropriate for someone in a leadership role.
I don't usually like people getting fired, but she's gotta go. Labs are very old, online labs are so stupid, and the quizzes made no sense half the time, just mindless memorization without much correlation to lecture. SJSU admins y'all guys suck, but be competent for once and get her to early retirement.
the head of chem 1a but shes horrible. had a planned trip the day of a lab exam (planned the previous sem) and asked for a day to take it earlier, then gave me a day for after and made a whole ordeal about it. id rather take a class with stanley butler than do any other class shes in charge of
