she is an amazing teacher. her tests are very fair. at first it seems like its a lost of reading but its really not a lot and she goes over it all in class. it is a lot of writing but if u take good notes u an get an easy A. she is extremely clear and is extremely nice. id take her again
TAKE HER!!!! theres a lot of note taking but her tests aren't that hard. She gives two midterms and a final. You need to read for every class and she really counts class particaption. She truly cares about her students.
good teacher-cares a lot about students and listens to what they say. encourages participation.easy tests if u pay attention in class and read a lil from textbook. def recommended
4, 5 page papers. you must read the books and it helps to find out examples of what she's looking for. Not an exciting class but the books are very useful for anthropology.
Great prof. Cares about the students and listens to what they have to say. Encourages class participation. Tests are among the easiest i have ever taken-and i am soooo lazy! highly recommended!
i like her very much, she's clear about what she wants from you, and in the lectures, she summarizes the readings, but you still need to read them. she's clear about everything she covers, and she's the one that changed my mind to change my major to anthropology.
very nice and helpful. straightforward with what she expects, good lectures, grades fairly, focuses on class participation and tests, though the tests are pretty easy if you do the reading. i'd take her class again, it was the only one i had last semester that didn't drive me insane. >.<
great teacher, take her!
the class is ok, she lectures alot which can get boring at times. she really wants alot of class participation, and she is never absent. a lot of ready, 2 books and the text but still a pretty easy class. i'd take it again.
Love Her! Helpful, interesting, and makes sure you UNDERSTAND everything. Very fair in terms of papers and assignments.
wat a cutie! class is really really interesting and she moves at a decent pace. lectures are enlightening and almost no workload for after class. very clear about what was on the midterm and final and class but u do havta study-participation helps. she really cares abt her students;come to class, take good notes & participate- garunted A.
She is really lenient in terms of handing in papers but she isnt that easy. You have to work for your grade in this class. She picked 5 pretty interesting books that are very relevant to the field of anthropology. She knows her stuff really well. Overall, good and recommended
We had to read five books for her class, she explains each one but the class isn't all that interesting, kind of boring. Four short papers, and two essays to do for the final. Okay grader, im just relieved this class is over! it can get brutal towards the end, but I guess that is understandable. Overall, this class is okay, she is nice though.
She is very fair, knows her stuff well. Lectures the whole class based on the assigned reading- but very interesting and CLEAR about what's important. 2 midterms and a final- easy if you do the readings and pay attention. She had us read 4 books, all of which were interesting even if you're not into anthropology. Easy A if you take decent notes!
I had her class as a lecture hall and surprisingly it wasn't all that boring at all. She really wants the class to participate and get into small discussions she likes the involvement. The material is not that hard to grasp there was only 2 multiple choice midterms which both were easy and a multiple choice final & the only homework she is reading
All I could ask for in a prof! If you just take good notes on her lectures, your set for the exams. She is very fair- all M.C. tests, very straightforward from the material learned. Basically, if you do the readings, take notes, and study a little bit, her class is an amazing anthro101. She is very fair and the material is interesting!
If you need an introductory course to Anthropology, just take her. You don't even need to bother buying any of the textbooks she assigns; just come to every class, take notes, and study them. Easy A+
Amazing professor charismatic and also she is hot and will give you skills you need to acquire a good grade in other classes and ultimately it was fun.
Great prof! Highly recommend her. Just come to class, take notes, and it's very easy! She is very helpful and really cares about her students. Take her for intro to Anthro.
Great teacher! a lil boring at times. but she knows her stuff and her tests are pretty much straight forward. def. recommend!
the bestest prof
Strassler is a great proffesor, she is ultra clear, and direct to the info. She talks the entire time sometime asking the class about the readings, which i never read. I still pased the class and all of her exams with an A-. Aside from that 5-15 years ago she was probably the hotest thing that Anthropology had ever seen.
Best professor, very nice and definitely clear. We had 1 textbook and 2 other books, which i never even read because she went over it in class anyways...2 tests and a final- very straight forward and pretty easy if you study. Got an A! Def take her!!
best teacher ever- especially for freshman. coming from high school, she is very understanding and helps the transition. loved her class!
Professor Strassler conducts her own research and knows so much about being a participant observer. Therefore she has had hands-on experience and makes use of it when teaching certain topics. She is very loud and clear verbally. I would definitely recommend her.
Very straightforward, simple, and clear. class is interesting, the readings (well, the ones i actually did) range from "very interesting" to "bearable".
Great teacher, you must come to class and listen to her lecture or else you will do poorly on the exam, before every exam she does a 15 min review telling you everything that will be on the exam. her class was easy!!
She seamed great when the semester started. Speaks clear, seams nice. But then once I started getting papers back from her I found out that she is a really strict grader!! HATE HER!! She always finds reasons to take points off no matter how well i write! All my other professors have been giving me good grades and shes ruining it!!
This professor is amazing! There is no text book it's just based off the three books you read and her lectures. She is so clear in class and give 2 midterms and a final. They are extremely easy and straight forward! Definitely take her for an easy A!!
Prof. Strassler was an amazing professor that taught the material very well. I would recommend taking her class.
AMAZING teacher!! lectures are clear, if you take notes and read the book you'll do great. Tests are super straightforward and come straight from the notesbook. She's so nice and considerate about missing class because of religious holidays. would deff take again really loved her!!
awesome teacher! loved her! lectures are super clear and tests are super straight forward. if you go and listen in class you are definitely going to pass! :)
She was great and the topics discussed were interesting! If there was a point someone was confused about, she would intelligibly answer your question. This Professor is brilliant and she's passionate about the material, and that passion rubs off on the students. Lot's of reading, but it's manageable and really helps when she lectures in class.
There's a few questions on the exams that weren't explicitly stated in class, and there's no textbook to cover that ground so it's difficult to get 100 on the exams, but if you get in the 94-96 range, you should get an A+ anyway
Expects a lot of class participation and gives a lot of readings but she keeps things interesting by asking thought provoking questions and is very knowledgeable about Indonesia. As long as you do the readings and participate in class you will do well.
Amazing professor! Definitely recommend her. She is straightforward with the lectures and if someone does not understand something she takes her time to explain it clearly. She gives review sheets for the exam and saves some time to clarify anything before the exam. Makes time to help students prepare for tests if needed. Easy exams & good reading
She is one of the best professors I ever had! Definitely recommended. If anyone is interested in buying the book for REALLY cheap, text me at 516-279-2056. No use for it anymore, your benefit.
Professor Strassler is amazing! She is so sweet and always there for you. She is very clear and explains everything. 2 midterms and a final which are straight from her notes. Don't really need to read the books but it definitely make it clearer. Her test have few tricky questions but they are very easy. If you study you'll do well. TAKE HER!!!
Awesome teacher. Very organized and clear. But there are no power points so attendance is mandatory and you must take really good notes to do well on the exams.
Very clear and straightforward. If you go to class and take notes you'll do really well. She gives readings for every class but goes over them in class so as long as you skim them for the test you'll be fine. Definitely recommended!
Professor Karen Strassler is a great Professor! She is straightforward and if you attend all her classes as well as do her readings you are guaranteed to pass! If anyone who plans on taking her for Anth 101 this upcoming semester, I got all the reading books in respectable condition and will give you a great pricefor them. mike95ny at live dot com
She is so nice and really wants everyone to do well. Take good notes and you will get an A!! take her!!
Professor Strassler has extensive knowledge in the subject matter, but for me the hardest part was the test as many of the multiple choice options are pretty confusing. Reading a must. Overall, good if you are interested in Anthropology.
Professor is extremely kind and caring. The workload is very manageable and the readings are interesting. However, it's very difficult to get 100% on exams which is frustrating. Nonetheless, I would recommend to a friend.
professor Strassler is amazing. Her class is extremely clear and organized. if you take notes on class you will do great on exam. and exam is based on three interesting books and lecture. and her give helpful review before exam. definitely recommend
An amazing professor. Her lecture are very fascinating and enlightening. Whether anthropology is of your interest or not, you are likely to enjoy this class. She reviews most of the reading in class.
Super organized and clear. Lectures flow in a very liquid manner. The books she chooses are on the interesting side and that along with her excellent communication skills makes this a fun class. Come to class and take good notes, read the book if you can and her exams will be a cake walk.
one of my favorite professors i have ever had, super understanding and interesting. i hated missing class because i would feel lost. but made it interesting enough that i never dreaded going
Professor Strassler is great! She likes to interact with her students and have more of a conversation than a lecture. She has 2 midterms and 1 final (cumulative). You can get away with not buying the books or reading them for her class. beware if no one answers she will threaten to quiz you (she has never done it though). If you study you'll pass.
She was a very kind professor and very passionate at what she teaches. The only down side about this class is that we only got tests to base our grades. I would have liked to have some sort of extra credit or essay to boost my grade. But other than that i recommend her.
Class is mostly lectures from her. Her PowerPoints don't have a lot of materials to note down so make sure you pay attention to what she says. Read the books as it was interesting studies and not a dull anthro textbook. She sometimes shows movies in class. Never curved the 3 exams.
You have to pay attention in class, her PP slides don't have much info because she wants you to write down what she says. You can get by without the books because she gives very thorough review sheets for the 2 Midterms and Final and lectures are heavy with info. Very good professor and interesting topics; exams are multiple choice and cumulative
i loved her anther 101 class, it was really interesting if you put the work in. This class is an easy A and freshman friendly if you read the material on time and take notes on her lecture. she gives review sheets prior to ever exam so you will be fine. She's very sweet and knowledgable and always willing to answer questions even if they seem dumb
She gives lectures, puts slides on the board and you need to take notes. She assigns swaths of a few books to read and they contain information that you will be tested on. The more you do the work, the more interesting the lecture is. Plain and simple and if you dont do the work, the class will feel boring. very note heavy
Professor Strassler is amazing. She cares so much about her students. I've taken two classes with her so far. Strassler is lenient on assignment due dates but expects the most from you. She's inspiring and really facilitates amazing class discussion. She's a great professor to take so if you get the chance, take her class! You wont regret it!!!!
I love Karen since she does everything quite simple. Read a few pages before class, listen to her lectures, and pass her tests. Pretty standard. She does have a few pet peeves though: no phones while she teaches & students with computers must sit in first 3 rows of the class. I don't really fancy anyone to tell me where to sit, but it's whatever.
Amazing lecture! Straightforward tests. Just read the books and pay close attention in class.
One of the best professors I ever had at QC! Easy course and Strassler makes it fun - interesting topics! We read 3 books and there were 3 tests cumulative on the readings and discussions we had in class. You read around 25 pages before each class and talking in discussions gets you extra points! Take her you won't regret it amazing class 100%!
Easy. Just read the books and be prepared to talk about it. She loves when you ask questions, she doesn't call on you. Participation is a big part of your grade. I would've gotten an A if I participated. 2 or 3 papers max that are 4 - 5 pages. Nothing too crazy. Simple and straightforward class.
Please take her! She is so nice, and cares about her students! We read three books, and there were three tests that are cumulative based on the readings and discussions we had in class. Pay attention in class, take good notes, you will pass with a good grade.
I loved this professor and I found the lectures very interesting. We read about 4 books and did 3 4-5 page papers. She returns the papers quickly and gives good feedback, she really wants you to succeed. Would definitely recommend!
best professor out there! so kind and helpful. 3 tests and 3 books assigned. participation maters too so be sure you participate!
I couldn't ask for a better professor. She's caring and understanding. You need to show up to classes and make notes. Read 3 textbooks and you have 3 tests. The key to getting a perfect score is to: read the assigned class readings, participate in class discussions, make good study notes, and attend every class.
Came in for an easy A. Testes based off of readings and lectures. started off reading books, but once we shifted to online i stopped and still did well on tests. she there to help you, very accommodating, participation really helps. I would say easy A if you put in minimal work
Good Professor that keeps you engaged in lectures, you have to read 3 books and there will be a quiz every few weeks and 3 exams. The quizzes are only 5 questions, so if you get 1 wrong you already have an 80, kinda annoying. Her tests are hard (IMO) & she doesn't give enough time for them. Doesn't post notes, gotta attend the lectures
this class was easy if u attend the lectures or watch the recordings of them on ur own time. no papers, few quizzes with 5 questions each and the final was 80 MC questions. there was a moderate amt of reading but they were all interesting and easy to understand in my opinion. u dont need to participate and prof strassler is very caring. take her!
Professor Strassler is the best professor I have taken at Queens College! She cares for each and every student, even though the class is 130 students. She gives 6 quizzes based on the textbook and 3 finals/midterms. Everything on the tests are from the lectures and the readings, with little thinking involved. Amazing professor I'd 10/10 recommend!
A lot of reading but its interesting topics so that helps.
She's extremely kind and during a pandemic, you NEED a kind professor! Trust me, make sure you listen to her lectures carefully because the exams are based on what she says. She gives a lot of opportunities to boost your grade! A well standard 101 course
She is an amazing professor. She gives readings but overall explains everything well and really works with the students
Professor Strassler gives amazing lectures and all her assigned readings are very enjoyable. The readings are not hard, you will love them! it brings your curiosity and thinks about culture. One of the best professors at QC. Few quizzes, and exams.
i don't know why there are good ratings but this is a trap. she purposely tricks the questions on the test, doesn't respond to emails, and the questions on test aren't from lectures. You need to buy and read a lot of books. I'm currently taking this class and regret it. I might drop out. Good luck
You have to watch the videos if you dont you won't pass of her slides alone. She assigns different books DO NOT take this class if your taking classes with a lot of reading. overall she is a good teacher just assigns too many things, there are 3 quizzes after every book. You HAVE to read, the class isn't hard but definitely isn't easy
This professor is very knowledgeable when it comes to anthropology. I enjoyed reading the books she gave us. Each part of the class was engaging and interesting. The tests and quizzes how ever can be misleading and confusing at time. She's very nice and will talk too you after class about anything. Overall great professor.
Great Professor. Shes kind and understanding. Youre expected to read about 3 academic articles a week and discuss them. They are difficult, but she understands this and just wants you to try. Its not an easy class but if you put in the effort, she will definitely acknowledge it.
Exam material taken completely from three required texts throughout the semester, and a lot of stuff not covered in the class. Lectures are long without descriptive notes, and are mandatory -- or else your grade will changed significantly lower last minute due to criteria not mentioned on the syllabus. Mixed bag, take if you need credits.
She's really nice and wants you to do well. If you are prepared to read textbooks and readings, and actually participate in her class then you'll do great. We had three quizzes and three tests. You won't find answers anywhere, so you need to actually study. Overall, she's a great professor, but you can't slack off in her class!
Cannibalism textbook was eye-opening, will look at "weird" cultures differently from now on. Super easy class, I barely read but scored really well. Most textbooks are free online, I didn't buy any. Pretty liberal prof
She is very caring and sweet and if you participate she will really like you. If you do the reading it is a very easy A. There were a few tests and quizzes, all based on the readings. A lot of reading for each class so be ready for that. Tests were pretty average, all multiple choice. Would take her again.
A lot of readings & books (can find online luckily.) participation matters a lot. Lectures are not great, kind of boring, but then it gets stressful when nobody is responding to her. everyone in class looks miserable. The content we read is good, but I can't recommend this prof based on what I see / feel during her class.
I dropped this class because prof strassler's method of teaching didn't align well with how I learn & bc of comments she made on the first day of class. I found them to be incredibly distasteful as somebody with chronic mental illness. She went on an unprompted tirade abt showing up to class and not using mental health "as an excuse."
She is a nice professor. The only thing is we read a LOT. Really LONG chapters for one class and even more are expected to be read by the next class. It gets really overwhelming. I feel overwhelmed just thinking about her class, honestly.
Professor Strassler is really understanding and grades fairly. She goes through the readings thoroughly which helps for note taking and having things open book was a big plus.
Professor Strassler made a lot of these dense texts so easy to understand. There are no tests in this class, only written assignments about the texts which you do timed, in class. As long as you attend class and take notes you will be fine. A lot of the readings are very interesting however they are long. I would take her again for sure.
Prof. Strassler is truly an amazing and understanding prof. You cant use devices in her class so purchase or print the texts out. heavy ish readings but they are truly interesting. DO NOT take this class if u arent interested in anthro, or reading. its sometimes hard, but if u particpate you will get a good grade. no finals/midterms just 4 essays.
