_ In general do not recommend at all. _ Old school of teaching (used hand written notes from 10 years or older!) _ Would choose any other Professor except her. _ Very moody, one day she comes to class in a very good mood, the other day you CAN'T even talk to her!
Super unclear about project and test requirements for technical drawing. Does not post required material on cuLearn. Questions remain unanswered for weeks. ECOR 1054 is an embarrassment.
Terrible teacher. Went to visit her outside of class and told me to google all the questions I asked her. Left the country for two weeks right before the midterm. Hoping I dont run into her again.
Terrible. Just don't expect her to teach you anything useful. Don't ask her questions because that's overrated or something. Oh yeah, and she might disappear from the school for weeks without any notice. Enjoy :
She doesn't seem interested in teaching she seems interested in money.
Class is entirely non-mandaory since she posts the slides on CuLearn and any questions you would have in class are immediately redirected to Google. Limited, to zero, communication skills (ironically) about group project specifications. Conflicting information between the Professor and the TAs make assignments harder than needed.
Decent
Great Prof. Makes it clear. Fair grader... takes top 8 of 10 tests etc.
She always flew through slides in class and went through examples way too fast on the board. Always erased questions right away before giving time to write down. Seems like she wants us to fail. Doesn't wear a mic for some reason- idk why she likes yelling so much. Try to avoid her if possible.
Doesn't actually go over any relevant examples of what she teaches in class, which is just ripped straight from the textbook. The recommended problems don't prepare you for the concepts on either of the midterms. Doesn't answer student questions and left the country for two weeks.
The first half of the class, visual communication, is a joke and she threw a curveball on the midterm just to lower the average. Just don't expect any help. Dynamics is a tough course made harder by her teaching. She spends most of the lecture on derivation, but it's copied from the book and skimmed through. Doesn't mention/touch on entire topics.
horrible teacher, does not know how to control a class. Always seems to not want to be there. Does not prepare you for any evaluations and always leaves you confused on what will be on the tests. Flys through slides, and whenever you raise your hand she will defer you to her website for the answers. If your in engineering you can't avoid her. GG
Explains well, tough grader. Need to do problems to pass.
Decent at explaining concepts, not really where it's coming from. Her examples are useful, but are a lot easier than problems you can expect to see, and the suggested work doesn't cover the entire scope of the class. Both visual comm. and dynamics are designed for you to lose marks, so don't expect 100 even if you've done all the practice + more.
Would never take a class with her again. She only goes over derivations which was completely useless and only goes over sample problems... WHICH ARE ALREADY SOLVED IN THE TEXTBOOK!!!! Her exam was also mostly on things that she went over for a few minutes at best. Goodluck if you have her
I dont even know where to being, she is not helpful and seems like she doesn't want to be there. She cuts the lectures short instead of going over more examples. Oh and the TA's are wrong most of time. THANKS!
This course is a JOKE, a combination of Karen's incompetence and disorganized projects/tests make it a nightmare. She stated to our class she did not understand some of the course material herself, yet it was the majority of our mid term. She refers you to google for questions on HER assignment questions even when you attend office hours. Awful
Horrible prof. she stops teaching because she can't "concentrate". she is incredibly incompetent. she has a very smug personality and will make you feel stupid for asking questions and is always trying to end lectures early instead of teaching more and helping students understand better. constantly does examples that aren't in the slides.
Karen, I hope you are reading this. CHANGE YOUR PROFESSION. You clearly do not care about the success of your students and seem to get pleasure out of our misfortune. You rush through lectures and skip examples to leave early, you make people feel stupid for asking questions. You don't know what you're teaching and it shows. Get a different job.
Her attitude has a mixture of "I wish I wasn't here right now" and condescension. It's a difficult subject, but her skills as a teacher are severely lacking. Expectations are unclear and not defined. Examples completed in lecture are much easier than what you'll get on examinations. Horrific subject combined with a horrific teacher.
Nothing else to say but YIKES.
Stay away as much as possible. She doesn't care at all and makes no effort to help. Questions are met with non-answers, lectures are unclear, and cannot control the class. Examples covered are either already solved in the textbook or are much too easy.
I found Karen to be super fun. Her lectures were always very enjoyable. I really enjoyed her sass every now and then as repetitive questions became tedious to listen to. Dynamics is a relatively difficult concept so I get why people whine, but during my session, she provided more than enough opportunities to learn more/ask questions.
Buy the textbook and that's all you need because this class is entirely self-taught. The structure and method's of teaching are questionable and don't contribute to a learning environment, more like survivability tactics
Dr. Taylor is an awesome lady, she's got a great sense of humour and makes the lectures quite fun. That being said however I think she could do with a bit if an attitude adjustment. Her exams aren't easy but they're not impossible and at the end of the day, we as students have to learn to independent and take responsibility of our own education.
Terrible. Avoid please.
You will have to teach yourself. She always brags about having worked at Shell but she is so incompetent I doubt they let her do anything but pump gas. Karen doesn't like teaching, she likes money. She will skip course material and cut lectures short to leave early. She will arrive in a horrible mood and take it out on your class by not teaching.
Horrible prof. the first half of the semester, she reads straight of the lecture notes. Spends most of the lecture time during the dynamics unit deriving equations then does 2 examples on the board with no explanation and copies the answers straight from the online solution manual.
First lecture was always packed and made it hard to teach. Second lecture was almost empty and she explained everything and was awesome. People don't give her credit considering the amount of BS she put up with in the first class. It's a tough class, so find a smaller lecture section and you'll do fine. She's a little sarcastic so be ready for that
The course itself was brutal, but Dr. Taylors teaching made it so much harder. Rushed through concepts to end class early. Also went over examples that were far too easy and already solved in the textbook (which is not needed for the course). However, the midterms and final were more than fair. You cant avoid her as shes the only prof for 1054.
Very few instructions for team project (don't bother asking her for guidance). Much better in module 2. Gets annoyed when the class gets loud. Tutorial questions for module 2 are much harder than the actual midterm.
If you bring up problems with her, she doesn't seem to really care. She appears kind of arrogant and she lacks a connection with students. As others have mentioned, she can be sarcastic, but more importantly, her innate apathy for the subject reflects in her style of presentation. When people don't show up to her lectures it's apparently our fault.
Doesn't give enough detail for the exam, not professional. Her slides aren't bad, but would not recommend
Doesn't seem to care about students success. Her lectures are so unclear, as she just derives equations instead of explaining the concept. She does 2 examples in class which are FAR TO EASY COMPARED TO ANY ASSESSMENT, and she doesn't bother to explain the examples, she just copies the solution onto the board. isn't helpful outside of class either.
Dynamics is a tough subject, and Dr. Taylor did not make it any easier. The examples solved at the end of lectures were simple, and not representative of material on the assessments. She does not care about her students, and rushes through the lectures. If you want to pass, study the textbook and do LOTS of practice problems. Avoid her if you can!
This class was horrible. Shes super rude and sarcastic and makes it seem like shes given us multiple external material for studying when she hasnt. Horrible at explanation, even in person. Dynamics has to be the worst thing ever.
Previous statements said about her hold true. Doesn't respond to emails and instructions are often unclear. It seems almost as if she doesn't care about what shes teaching, and would rather do something else. While she is good at explaining things, the examples shown don't reflect the difficulty in assessments in the dynamics portion.
First half of 1054 (Eng. Desgin) everything is clear and common sense. You must attend lectures if you want a good grade becasue her slides are sparse. Second half of 1054 (Dynamics) is hell. The material is HARD and the examples she chooses are way easier than the ones of the assignments, and tests. She does care and is available for extra help.
Dr. Taylor often prioritizes making her lectures shorter rather than giving useful examples to better the students understanding. This combined with her difficult tests and condescending attitude make her an all round unlikable prof.
She does not explain anything
Gives extremely vague directives for assignments and penalize you when you do not comply to her very narrow interpretation of these broad directives. Speaking of assignments, you will have a ton of them. Way more than you reasonably should.
Dr. Taylor is a great person and a decent professor. She genuinely cared about her students and she did a lot to reduce the workload from online classes.
Dr. Taylor is a very mediocre Prof. While she is fair with grades and generally understanding of students problems, however her assignments are often vague and require much clarification.
Prof. Taylor was readily accessible outside of class to help students, and her assignments and quizzes were fair. There's lots of homework, but it's Physics, that's the only way to get good at it. The final exam was tough, but it's not supposed to be an easy course.
Dr. Taylor is not the best prof, she tends to very vague on the subject matter and does not give ample explanations when asked to explain things in more detail, The only reason I got an A is because the course content was easy.
Doesn't give slides or pdfs on cuLearn
Just awful.
She is really incompetent in setting up questions for the tests and gives little time to answer really tough questions in quizzes. She skips important parts in her lectures as she is not able to do it by herself and expects us to comprehend by ourselves. Terrible professor.
Karen Taylor is an absolute gremlin, I had her for a class other than this and it was hell. She doesn't care about her students, she speed runs the lectures and barely explains it. The class is already hard and so in online, we don't need her making it worse. My advice is stay away from her if you can, like you would with a plague.
I found her to be rude and she did not like answering questions about the course without giving attitude. The course material was not specifically hard, it was time consuming and she did not offer a lot of time on the exams. I got a good grade because I took it online and I am sure it would have been a worse experience in person.
Karen Taylor is a terrible professor who makes this material harder than it needs to be, and more importantly does not try to teach. Her exams are also extremely unfair, yes they are easy if you study, but online school doesn't mean multiple choice. Also she does not make the quizzes herself and has no idea how hard the 20 mins problems are.
I am usually a generous person when it comes to professors as I know their job is very hard. Truthfully, if I was able to give this prof a 0 I would. I have taken lots of the material provided in ECOR 1048 in high school and found it easy. When I stepped into this class I feel like I can't even learn the material anymore. Easily the worst prof.
I loved Karen sm cause she really broke down everything and explained it to us. Also the midterm and final werent as hard as some other professors. 10/10 professor
People like to lose it on Dr. Taylor for no reason. She's so clear with her criteria, very fair on assessments, and makes herself accessible. Not only that, she shares her materials with other profs. She doesn't teach many easy courses but you always know what to expect. She has a PhD, she won't hold your hand throughout your engineering program.
Karen Taylor's class is a waking nightmare. Her lectures seem to the point and straightforward, which is nice, until you realize they have nothing to do with the tests and quizzes she administers. Karen Taylor is bad to the point of me considering switching to a different engineering discipline just to avoid her in the future. Avoid at all costs.
Study hard or you will not pass!
Seems very distracted and stressed out during lectures. Struggles to get through without making a million mistakes and takes out her frustration on the class. Will be very passive aggressive if you try to ask a question. Seems like she hates her job and all of her students. Her lecture content does not at all cover the difficulty of her exams.
EXTREMELY unfair exams, inaccessible, always angry in live lectures, pretends to be very nice and caring but is the opposite
Not bad of a prof as I heard from previous students. Must have changed up her act this term. Midterm was very fair, a little too fair haha. Final exam was crazy hard. Her quizzes were much easier than assignments which I found weird. Study hard in this course or you will fail.
I believe that in years past she has given unfair exams. However, this years exams were extremely manageable provided adequate studying While at times her lectures were confusing, Dr. Taylor provided excellent examples and helpful practice problems. Study and you'll be fine. Don't lose it on her because you failed to study enough.
Either she got a lot better, or she isn't as bad as everyone makes her seem. I really liked her. The midterm was easy, though the final was really hard. I feel like since the class is hard people like to pick on her, but I thought she went over the content clearly, and often stopped to make sure everyone understood. Study hard and youll do fine.
Dr. Taylor is a wonderful professor. She cares about her students and is one of the few who does live lectures, she does record them for those who need it too. My main issue in her course was my engagement and the TA's were awful (not her fault though). She is also very accommodating and helpful when you ask questions.
She has improved allot, and is one of the best profs in the department for second year classes, very reasonable but the course is not easy
I took a couple of classes in first year with Professor Taylor and found that she was very organized, but not the most approachable. This year I found that she was much more approachable and wanted us to succeed. She also really cared about our feedback and wanted us to do well.
Took Fluids to get ahead and Dr. Taylor was very good and understanding of the different knowledge levels coming into the course. She was very considerate with lab extensions given the squished time frame of the summer schedule. Especially considering the storms that took out most of the power in the city. The final exam was stressful but doable.
Don't bother emailing her if you want a response with any indication that she actually read your question. Would email her something like "How do I isolate for theta in this equation?" and she would reply "Try isolating for theta". Happened MULTIPLE times... Don't expect her to read past the first sentence of your email or give it a single thought.
she gives real life examples and helps you understand
She's better at teaching in person but STILL doesn't give part marks. Even when you write out a (correct) detailed solution for HOW you would solve the rest of the problem you can't progress to if you got stuck on something. & if you don't put your final answer in the exact form she wants, you get a zero, even if the rest of your work was correct.
She will not teach anything right, she will blabber on about a solution, mess it up on the board then post a diff solution on the slides above her. 0/10 swap out also hardest 1048 Exam @ Carleton
Professor Taylor's course is less about memorizing and more about understanding. Attend all your lectures and you'll do fine! She does the examples in class instead of reading typed notes. There are 5 assignments (pretty hard) and 5 quizzes (generally very easy). The only thing I didn't like is that she rarely gives part marks on exams.
problems covered in lectures were basic but PA sessions had more difficult problems solved. graded on 4/5 assignments, 4/5 quizzes and midterm and final exam. both midterm and final exam were very fair with easy questions. Quizzes are online and mostly multiple choice but questions need to be completed quickly for them.
Get ready to WORK. Prof. Taylor provides all the basics you need for understanding the material in class but it's up to you to apply that and work through harder examples yourself. She's very approachable outside of class if you need extra help. Midterm and final were fair. Quizzes were sometimes a doozy. Make sure you keep on top of the content.
Karen Taylor was a great prof. Exam was very fair. During lectures she would go very slow and into detail explaining concepts clearly so students would understand. Maybe she was worse in the previous years but she was great for me.
Explains well in class, enthusiastic. Much improved from previous years based on the old ratings.
Prof Taylor was pretty good overall. Midterm and Final was very fair. Only feedback would be to make the in lecture problems harder as they were too easy and did not provide much value to students learning
Karen must have gotten better over the years, because she was a great prof this semester. I found both the midterm and exam very fair, almost bordering on too easy. My only real complaints are that she spends too much time on theory in her lectures, and is a pretty tough grader. ECOR1048 just sucks tho, she can't help that.
Before taking dynamics i was told that Professor Taylor was very difficult and that her exams were impossible. She must have changed the way she writes exams because the midterm was laughably easy and the final was very fair. The problems on the exam were the same difficulty as the problems she would present in class or tutorials.
Her content was very heavy, but she tried really hard to make the lectures enjoyable, and was very interested in her students success. However the exam was over the top and difficult
Very awful because of the fact she is very strict with her grading
Not the best professor but she does her job.
Karen was a fantastic professor, she taught Dynamics in a very clear way and she knew what she was teaching, some professors don't understand what they are teaching. But, Karen was so different than others. She is indeed one of my favorite professors ever.
SHE IS THE BEST! JUST BEST!
Grades more fairly than Edward Cyr or (apparently) Mehdi Eshagi. I loved her hilarious 150 m/s = 540 km/h megacar example (For reference, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ only has a top speed of 490.484 km/h (source Wikipedia) aka 136.2455555... m/s. Very easy for Grade 13 students/Cegep minus coordinates systems eww. Also gave lecture for 1057.
This class made me hate my time at Carleton university. I would watch her write jibberish on the chalkboard and erase it 5 mins later after realizing she messed up. Then proceeded to show her online slide deck; which had a completely DIFFERENT solution method. She made more students lost than she did help students, for your own sanity DROP 1048!
Although we all hate Wiley, for Thermo its the best. Weekly assignments help you A LOT, quizzes are very fair, labs are a bit long but fair. Dr. Karen actually is the best at teaching this course, she will go thorugh things one by one and review the content beginning of each lecture.
Very "by the book prof". Wouldn't email her asking questions, TAs will be much more helpful. If you intend on missing lab/quiz dont run it by her unless its your last option. TAs will be 100x more lenient and will actually try to accommodate you. However, she does seem passionate about the courses she teaches just expects you to put in lots of work
FYI almost half of the class failed the course. The marking was unreasonably tough. No partial mark was given on the exam. For example, in a multiple-choice question, if out of the 5 options 4 of them are correct and you select 3 correct options then you still get zero.
Professor Taylor cares about her students, and wants us to learn. She is not always easy, but one thing is sure with her; you will learn the content in depth. Her methods helped me so much in my other classes, and helped me develop a good study strategy. Thank you Karen!
I actually look 1048 and 2101 with her. 10x better in 2101. I'm convinced that no professor at this university can explain kinematics at least decently, but kinetics with both taylor and hayes are easy to understand. Marking is dumb, the moment you mess up any work after that point will just get 0. Exam for 1048 was pretty fundamental
She is a great teacher. However, her marking scheme is unfair to the students. She makes assessments very difficult. She gives no part marks, for example, if a question has 5 steps and 1 mark for each step, if there is a calc error in the first step and all the answers are wrong but the process is right, you will still only get 1/5 marks
Conducts great lectures and sometimes gives hints for final exams, so go to class!
Was very hesitant to take with Dr. Taylor at first due to some negative feedback however she is truly one of the best professors I encountered in Engineering. She really cares and explains everything clearly. Would highly recommend going to lectures it does save you lots of time trying to understand things on your own.
She was a wonderful professor, Genuinely the only class I could stay awake in. You have to attend lectures if you have her as a professor as her posted notes are not detailed, however, if you do attend the lectures I can guarantee you will do amazing in the class. She assigns lots of homework however its simple and helps your understanding greatly.
You will soon learn that dynamics is a very hard subject to teach and Taylor has been one of the best profs, even with her rating. She is good at simplifying and visualizing concepts in class. Attend all classes (including PA sessions) and you will pass without issue. She's friendly and will answer any questions, great professor
BEST PROF EVER! When she teaches you already know shes so passionate about it. GO FOR LECTURES. She teaches so well, you won't look away even for a minute. taken 3 classes with her 11/10. If you dont take taylor, youre missing out. Genuinely cares if you understood the material or not. Stays back after class to make sure every student understood.
Definitely an over hated professor. She has clear lectures, is accommodating given the proper reasons, and does a pretty good job at dumbing things down, and her diagrams and constant work on the chalk board are pretty good too. Also the first prof to ask me if I had any questions while writing the exam. Good prof, teaching a hard course(s)
Professor Taylor is thorough in her teaching, though her grading can be strict. The material is challenging, but her clear explanations and the use of resources like Unstuckstudy can help you succeed. Attend class, study hard, and you'll learn a lot.
She explains clearly but is reluctant to help when asked questions. Her teaching style ignores different learning needs. Not posting lecture slides is frustrating since students may unexpectedly miss class. Her tone feels unsupportive, making it harder to seek help. The course isn't too difficult, but a more flexible approach would improve learning.
she teaches close to nothing in class, and expects the TA to teach you everything in the PA sessions. She has a big ego and she is cold. I started going to the other section taught by Ed Cyr. He is much better.
her teaching style has been so frustrating. She seems unfamiliar with the material we're tested on and dismisses questions or any comments. Lecture notes aren't posted, and her classes don't align with the course content. The examples she uses are basic, yet she expects us to know advanced concepts already. Ed cyrs section seems much better
Yeah nah...
I had a great time in her class, the material of these courses are often hard and i think people want her to change that. She is great at examples and cares about her student. she doesn't put up with student being rude to her. I had a great time in her class and i will chose her over the others again and again.
Had her in the Fall semester, and just thought that she was an amazing prof, it confuses me as to why she doesn't have a rating above 4. I found that she explained tough concepts well. Only problem I had (maybe due to other profs) was that the exam was tough, and used realistic pictures for no good reason which made it difficult for understanding.
Assignments were full of mistakes, super hard grading, didn't answer emails. Go to lectures because she doesn't post them.
Does everything in her power to keep the fail rate a 60%
She was very clear in her lectures and did not spend time on useless things. She taught for understanding unlike most of the professors I had. On the final exam I ran out of time which messed up my grade but I felt like I understood way more conceptually coming out which I think will be helpful for future aero classes.
just dont take her
Karen is an okay person but she just made Dynamics so hard, I did every problem and still did not really understand, she would not post the lectures which genuinely sucked. The assignments were so WEIRD, I spent most of my time trying to understand them but I did not get them at all. Personally, she mad a complicated class more complicated.
Dr. Taylor is a decent professor who explains the course material clearly and covers all key topics. However, ECOR1048 is both exam- and assignment-heavy, making it a challenging course for many first-year students. It demands a lot of independent practice outside of lectures, which likely contributes to student frustration.
