She is very helpful. All you ve to do are 4 speeches in the semester and she gives all the information how to.Before the graded speeches we would do fun speeches about ourselves or about things we like,so we'd get used to speaking in front of classmates.Good teacher to take if you are afraid of speaking like i was..Now i love it!!!I will miss her..
Cute & trendy lady, the total opposite of "weird". She's different from other teachers because she actually treats you like a human being. Only 4 speeches, casual & fun environment. My favorite class so far!!!!!
Very matter of fact, a little self involved sometimes. Class was easy, just show up and do your speeches. Let us out early sometimes because was a three hour class.
She is kind of out there. If you miss a class you will guaranteed miss something, she makes it so you can't miss any classes and she was constantly late.
Mrs. Vasquez was great. Our room was always cold. Yes you did need to attend class. she would do stuff like purposely give a pop quiz. but if you left early after a test you wouln't know. She is kind and good at her topic.
I enjoyed Karen's class. Her instruction can definitely help your speaking ability. Prepare for your speeches as much as possible and you'll do well.
Karen is a fantastic teacher. She has a magnificent presence and understands how to keep interest in the class. Its a fairly easy class as long as you prepare. Listen in class, stick to her guidelines and Bob's your uncle.
BEST TEACHER! THIS SPEECH COULD HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE BUT KAREN MADE IT FUN AND INTERESTING. I RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR TO ALL!!!
She is sweet lady! Not too much work..just do the speeches and you will be fine.Open book quizes, midterm and final are easy.If you want good grade, take her!
Take her. She is very nice and helpful. She is easy grader. Just do your best in speeches. Her whole class pass. Take her, you won't regret it. All you have to do six speeches. There is midterm and final. She tells you what to study for the test. I didn't buy a book. I studied in library. I pass her class with A.
Still uses overhead projecter. Kept changing due dates and chapter readings. No extra credit. Read from book most of the class. Lack of passion & enthusiasm for subject, but easy class.
If you are terrified of public speaking, this class is for you!Mrs.Vasquez makes this class to be fun!4 speeches:2 of them are demonstrative. You can "bake" cookies and share them with a class. We had lots of food for the 1st speech)Quizzes are short&easy.Midterm is okey if you study. We were lucky to have take-home final.Highly recommended!!!
Karen is Very easy to follow and really get you involved with the class so don't be afraid to make new friends because by the end of class you will remember something about every single person in the class.
Karen is the best teacher I've had so far and not because I got a good grade or because the class is easy. The class was actually pretty demanding and we almost had no breaks in between our speeches, however, she helped us so much and by the end of the class almost everybody gave excellent speeches and we all became good friends. Take her class
Awesome class!!! Its really easy if you just show up and put forth a good effort. She has a great style of teaching and you can tell she really loves her job.
i was sick for 1 day, went to the doctor. she told me that 1 day dropped my grade from an A- to "unrepairable". that my grade was so bad that I should drop and retake the class. wouldnt accept doctors note to replace the missed day, completely unreasonable.
Professor vasquez was good I learned alot from her always help with any ? i asked ,the class was fun not boring.
Loved this teacher! This teacher is for those students who have a fear of public speaking. She doesn't expect perfection. As long as you do the assignments you will get a good grade.Midterm is from lecture notes, she only covers what you need to know. Final is a take home. I recommend her class.
I hated to speek in front of people, after this class I feel prepared. Great teacher if you have a fear of speech class, she makes everyone feel at ease. Doesn't try to embarass people like some other teachers. Must show up to class, but you'll actually want to go, it's fun most of the time. If you want a good grade you have to memorize your speech
This was best college learning experience to date. This teacher was excellent and allowed me to speak on controversial issues. She was approachable from day one and helped me thoroughly; I am a notorious problem child. Every single person left this class better prepared and I would dare say a better person. I totally recommend Karen Vasquez.
I really enjoyed this class. I was afraid of public speaking but after taking her class I'm now confident. She really cares about her class. Grades very fairly. Fun class! Does a great job of easing nerves. I would higher recommend her.
Awesome professor! You will enjoy her class! Take it!
interesting and informative class. I would recommend her to anyone! Take her speech 331 class!! You will not regret it.
Never imagined myself passing a public speaking class because I am so shy. But she creates a great environment for everyone to learn and grow. I loved my classmates as well. I cried while packing up my book :(
Very good professor. She expects you to work but within reason and she is very clear. You will need a textbook for the daily quizzes but I got away with just using one on reserve in the library. I enjoyed her class, she made public speaking very approachable.
Needs to teach more & lecture less. Poor adherence to the syllabus. Always rushed & usually late. Turn around time for grading is slow. It appeared as though she let her personal views influence the grading of speeches. If you want to learn how to speak choose a different professor & take the whole semester course as 4 speeches isn't enough. AVOID!
The prof. of this speech class was replaced with this prof., she's lecturing a lot instead of teaching more. She required textbook for quizzes, MID-TERM, FINAL, and 4 SPEECHES FOR WHOLE SEMESTER. That's a first time ever in my life I experienced this Speech class need a MID-TERM. She takes too long to give back grades, I'm NOT recommend this prof.
She is a very goo professor, explains everything clearly. Enjoyed her class. If you don't understood something stop by her after class and she will help you out. I recommend this teacher for the speech class.
Great professor! I would definitely recommend anyone to take her! She give you all supplies needed to succeed in her class.
Great teacher! Her midterm and final are super easy as long as you take notes in class and have the textbook. Her quizzes are easy and she tells you what they'll be on, and sometimes allows you to use the textbook on quizzes. Speeches are easy. Just prepare prepare prepare. She's an amazing teacher and I highly recommend her!
Laid back professor. Class consisted of presenting material from textbook in groups, taking notes from a power point. 1 group presentation. Didn't seem to care about attendance, but she does not post assignments on the course website so if you want to get points, show up. Negative notes: did not follow the syllabus. Other than that, I recommend!
Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who isn't a comm. major. She grades way too harshly for this being just a general ed speech class. She doesn't let you use any notes during your speech & is really picky for her grading. Not a bad woman, but as a teacher she's uptight, takes this intro to speech class way too seriously, & is really unclear.
Karen was a very good teacher, her lectures were a little boring but show up and participate and you will pass. You need the book and you need to prepare for your speeches. I didn't prepare too much and I was really nervous to speak in front of the class but I got over it and got a C+, I did terrible on my first two speeches and forgot most of them
The test were longer than I expected for this type of course, but I scored over 98% on each. Study, read, take notes. She doesn't appreciate those who don't take the class seriously, and I don't blame her. If you come to class be prepared to learn - she's excellent in her field! Her tips make it easy to speak in front of others!
Vasquez expectations are always straight forward. She also helps with stage fright. Don't miss your speech day and don't try to outsmart her she doesn't care for that. If you go to her office hour, she'll help you with your outline. Easy A if you participate. Textbooks also available at ARC library.
Practice your intros for success. She regurgitates the book, and her grading system is subjective. Her advice can be inconsistent, so just nail your key transition phrases and intros. The class is easy enough, but her grading system is really what mood she is in to finding what you say is interesting or not. Good luck, practice your intros!
She was a great teacher. The speech outlines she gave us were very easy to follow. She does not let you use your outline in front of the class, but you can use visual aids which helped me a lot. On your visual aids you can write your main points to remember the order of your speech. The longest speech we had to do was no more than 8 min for sure.
I was sick and out twice and would have been failed, even though I had a B, if i had not withdrawn. I feel is unfair especially in a semester class. Also she couldn't communicate her requirements clearly, couldn't use D2L and even her hand outs were wrong according to her own statements-communication major? Textbook $140.00! barely used.
Took her 8-wk class. Participation was only required during the final 4 weeks of class and a sign in was passed around. Does not have a clear grading criteria. Does not read long-paged essays and projects. Very easy class, yet boring lectures straight from the book. Return your books and rent from library. You will use it only as a reference. EasyA
I was terrified of Public Speaking. I though that I would hate it, but it was one of the best classes I have ever taken. She is awesome! She makes speech class fun. Text book not required.. just take good notes. LOVED IT!!!! Shes funny and beautiful. A midterm and final which were super easy. A couple of speeches and a lot of fun group projects.
Grading criteria are far from clear. She does not always show up to office hours. Very forgetful and unorganized. Will give quizzes asking for specifics from reading. The syllabus was not adheared to and it was difficult to give her what she expected due to her lack of clarity.
This teacher is beyond unorganised. Her syllabus is unless, she constantly changes how many points are available for each assignment. Whenever she lectures she will read from the powerpoint that the book publisher provided. She adds no value to the class. Any student can take her place and the class will go on normally. She is a very lazy teacher.
Positive: gave good feedback outside of class, very nice woman. Lots of assignments that were easy points. Negatives: midterm and final was unnecessary hard. Midterm was in class short answers ( to be fair she did give good study guide). Final was take home (but 8-15 pgs A, 5pg C) tough grader(speech). Could give better instructions.
I took public speaking with her and she was great! Only 3 speeches (longest was 10 min). She has you type out an outline and then say your speech using visual aids. as cues. You cannot take your paper up. The class wasn't big making it easier to talk in front of people. She's super nice and has a lot of patience. Only 2 exams; midterm and final.
Very fair! Very nice, warm, and easily approachable. Fun even though I'm terrified of public speaking. I gained confidence thanks to Ms. Vasquez . Still don't love public speaking but now know I can do it. Group projects were fun! Great class! Get ready to do some work. You will work for your grade!!
I was terrified of public speaking, but professor Vasquez provided many useful tips for dealing with nervousness that really helped a lot. I know that the skills I learned in her class will help my throughout my education and my career. The class was a lot of work, but it was manageable (especially considering it was a 4 week class).
I really don't care for the class at all based on the way it goes. You're lectured about the subject after you've taken the quiz. The lectures don't really match with the book so you're unsure of what you read sometimes. Syllabus is a waste of paper. It is a TENTATIVE schedule so you don't know what to expect until you're told.
Great teacher. She made the lectures clear and easy to understand. She gives you an outline of what each speech should contain. Dont have to be a good speaker to do well. Read the book because she quizes you on chapters before she teachers about them to make sure you are reading, but the quizes are very easy if you just read. I recommended her!
The first part of the semester, I was like "I don't know if I like her" because the text book quizzes required a lot of reading AND the lectures about the chapter you were quizzed on weren't presented until after quiz. Good teacher though. Funny in the way she says things, but not compromising on what you know and how you demonstrate it.
5 Speeches: Demonstrative(5min), Informative(6min), Persuasive 1(4min)+2(6min), Award (1min). One letter grade if you miss Awards night. Study guide for midterm almost identical. She will give you an outline on how to format and make your speech. Read book for small 3-4 question quizzes. For my course, final was take home, every ? one page
I struggle with horrible Anxiety and thanks to her, her teaching methods, and supportiveness I was able to accomplish a life time goal; speaking infront of 200-300 people, outside of class. She is extremely helpful and accessible quickly as well as fun to talk to during class. She makes you feel included and understood.
Who wants to take speech? Not many... But if you have to take it (my sympathies), take it from her. You may think a speech without notes is impossible, but amazingly it isn't! She made class fun and interesting, and she really wants you to succeed. I thought her grading of speeches was rough, but I'm not that great at public speaking. Have fun!
She is very caring of your grade. She isnt that hard, I took the fast track class and it was really easy to follow.
Prof Vasquez isn't a tough professor and makes speech bearable and passable. Definitely recommend.
If youre nervous about speech, I highly recommend her. Her 4 week class was easy. Light reading. Study guide similar to test. Notes arent allowed but visual aids help a lot. She cares about your grade and not a tough grader at all on speeches. She keeps class interesting. She makes you feel comfortable before a speech by engaging in conversation
Read the book, her lectures won't help you pass the test as she often starts sharing personal anecdotes and doesn't cover much material that will be in the test. She is a very tough grader on the speech demonstrations you will be making, follow the examples she gives you to the letter and make sure to prepare and practice multiple times.
My one tiff about this prof is that she doesn't give feedback after presentations. So we never know how to do better. Rarely gives paper back. But she is not too terrible a professor. The class is enjoyable at least, but I'd say it's thanks to my classmates. 2 projects (volunteering & problem/solution). READ - sometimes gives quizzes on chapters.
Very understanding and caring, not to much homework besides preparing for speeches. She creates a very safe environment for presenting.
She grades really harsh and feedback is not helpful. Completely irrelevant at times. There are some really long assignments that I felt did not add to my knowledge or ability to being a better speaker. Would not recommend.
I took her for Summer 4 week course and we had a speech every week and it was not so easy, but I still managed to do my speeches and pass this class with an A. Just make sure that you follow her directions for outline and you will be good.
Honestly, I love this class. She's super strict with attendance and doing your speeches on time and you NEED to use her outlines for all speeches and forms but that kind of just makes things easier for you. The midterm is also EASY if you read up on the sections of the textbook and review lecture notes that she clearly outlines in the study guide.
I would not recommend her to anyone. She tries her best to take some points off of your grade very tough on grading.
BE AWARE! I AM NOT JOKING. She was the worse professor I have ever had in my entire life. She is so disrespectful and selfish. I never and ever recommend her classes to anyone. She creates so many self-law into the class. All the time she acts like a big boss. Always she warns students and tries to force students to keep their cameras on.
I liked her at first but then something changed. She started cramming speeches together back to back with little time to prepare. She requires outlines but I think that this actually helps the student. The final speech is worth more than your final which I think is a little unfair. She is not very understanding and doesn't have a clear syllabus.
i took 8 week, camera! participate!!! do homework!! great prof. cares about studs. can't miss speech. As long as you try and put in effort, you'll do fine. prof. gives all needed info, will help, gives good feedback. enjoyable class. nervousness not issue. Laid back prof. no reading speeches.
8 wk class. This professor wants you to succeed. Her expectations are straight forward and she will provide feedback. Don't expect any leeway, she's strict but that provides structure. Must do homework, not difficult (txtbk ?s). participate in class, it's better that way. Take this professor, she teaches you. Won't burn you out.
First off, her syllabus only says for the final section "there will be a final" then drops a 10 plus page essay as the final. She is so disrespectful and doesn't care that students take multiple classes. Please do not take her. She is so unorganized and rude.
I do not recommend this teacher! Rude, disrespectful and like to threaten you with passing her class or not! Grading system sucks and she has too many rules! You can participate and turn in all homework on time miss one speech and fail the class! No lead way but she wants lead ways when she miss class!
One Great Teacher!!! 8 week online course that I dreaded taking. She is clear about what she expects from you. It is completely doable with additional courses. Participation matters. Her motto: Give me a little bit of answer I give you a little bit of grade. This class was awesome! so glad I faced my fear of speech class! She rocks!!
Gives off major "let me talk to your manager" vibes. If you wanna hate your life for a semester Mrs. Vasquez will surely help you with that goal. Mean woman, talks down to the class, and is often unprepared for her own lectures. If you are actually interested in improving and learning I would look elsewhere.
Professor Vasquez is very straight forward. There is no homework, only the 4 main speeches you have to do and like 2 minor assignments. The ending has felt quite crammed with the last 2 speeches. She can be understanding and has a good sense of humor. Just follow the outline and you will do fine! Any Public Speaking class will be tough in some way
SO AWFUL!! I can’t believe I trusted the reviews. SHES AS AWFUL AS PPL SAY SHE IS. I TRIED MY BEST MY FIRST SPEECH AND GOT BELOW 90. Gives attitude too! SHE claims she grades easier when you go on the first day but she gave me that grade. I finished on time too. She picks favorites and only likes teachers pets. She is so unbelievably rude.
She is a very supportive teacher If you do the work and put in the time to practice she's the best you will ever get. She only has 4 main speeches and she isn't a tough grader. The main thing is to focus on sounding enthusiastic and not to read the screen as much. Students/Teacher are also so caring and make you feel better whenever you mess up.
The only way you can fail this class is by not putting in the time to practice. Some people are caught cheating for their grades that's why her rate is low. The teacher and students can spot it as well. She's an easy grader and you are able to pick the days you want to go!! If you want a teacher that can help you in the future, she is the way to go
Best Teacher I have ever had!
Dont let the name fool you she is pretty amazing she might seem strict at the start but she is caring and respectful.
The way I'd describe her class is not great, not terrible. Nearly every class is a long lecture, and she spoke to us with the same respect level as high schoolers (even though a lot of us weren't even freshmen?) Very strict attendance. If you don't prove you're very sick, she lowers grade a whole letter. Take if you need to fulfill the requirement.
DO NOT TRUST THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS, they were probably written by people who failed or are snowflakes. This class is super easy and Professor Vasquez is caring and is not a tough grader. The class has 4 major speeches all in the 5-6 min range. Just practice your speeches at home and you'll do fine and this is coming from an introvert person.
dont listen to the good reviews. i passed..but at what cost? i spent my nights crying because she put so much pressure on us. she would yell at some students and try to embarrass them at times. btw, you're failed if you miss ONE speech. she treats this class like a navy seal army prep or something. responds to emails late and is super passive agro.
Took her for COMM301 and honestly, to pass this class all you have to do is PRACTICE YOUR SPEECHES! She's strict and participation and attendance are mandatory but if you put in the work, her class is an easy A. 4 speeches and 2 exams. PRACTICE!!!!!!
While her approach may be characterized as stringent, it is undeniably rooted in a profound concern for the development and success of her students. Through her unwavering commitment to fostering an environment conducive to growth, she emphasizes the significance of thorough preparation and repetition in the realm of public speaking.
In the beginning, I actually thought she was an okay professor. However, you could participate as much as you want in the class but if you miss one speech, automatic fail. you literally have to prove to her that you are sick or she lowers your grade. She's not understanding of student's situations and SUCKS at answering emails.
Professor Vasquez epitomizes pedagogical excellence, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to fostering the success of each student under their purview.
She is a terrible professor in my opinion! She would have outbursts in the middle of class, gave unnecessary homework, and had way too many speeches for a Communications 301 introductory course. The way she grades makes you not even want to give speeches. Got an A glad thats over, hopefully Karen is better in the future for her students!!!
Despite the inherent complexity of the speeches, her insightful feedback catalyzes substantial refinement in students' oral and presentation skills. The transformative impact of this course extends universally, enhancing workplace communication adeptness for all participants.
Her grading criteria was laid out for each speech, however she was pretty strict with the grading though. She also seemed also pretty condescending during lectures and seemed rude to some students. Which makes it difficult considering its a speech class.
Enrolling in her communication class was a great decision; it significantly boosted my confidence in interpersonal communication. I highly recommend taking her course for anyone looking to enhance their speaking skills.
I'd eagerly enroll in her class again! Although her course presented challenges, crafting speeches on enjoyable themes made it a rewarding experience.
She was very rude and disrespectful. She does not care about you as a person. She does not follow her syllabus. She doesn't answer her emails or text messages. She automatically fails you if you miss ONE speech. Attendance is mandatory.
COMM361:few HW, interesting content. Not a public speaking course but graded 1st/only speech as if we prepared all year & told “funny” story of failing nervous student for ‘distracting mannerisms' (fiddling w/ tie) Other odd story: watched soldiers raid Afghan villages on monitors @ son's base? Never posted cancelling of classes, only mentioned irl

If I could rate Professor Vasquez less than a 0 I absolutely would. As someone who has always showed up to class and have earned high GPA's, I'm here to say that her public speaking class is a waste of time. She doesn't care for her students and you will never be able to get an extension on an assignment. She grades super precisely, A = Impossible
She can be right about practicing. She does not care about her students. Don't get into a car accident and then miss class, won't be excused.
