She actually TEACHES you! It's not about turning in a paper and getting a grade back, it's about turning in a paper and getting it back with comments, to learn from for the next paper. We have the most fabulous in class discussions, sometimes a little off tangent, but fascinating nonetheless. The essays can be tough, but you come away with a lot.

This is the best teacher I have ever had. You can tell she is passionate about teaching and takes a lot of time to write back on your essays. You actually learn from her.

Great class discussions on many issues, books, and movies, to hone critical thinking skills. Interesting required reading, and a sense that she really cares about helping to improve writing skills. Although not an "easy" class per se, one worth taking for personal academic improvement. You'll look forward to "life" discussions, and Karen is sweet.

Karen is one of the most inspirational teacher's I have ever had. She truly cares about what is going on in our world and her class discussions are fascinating. She's a big time liberal so if you don't mind that, definetely take her class! No text book and lots of class discussions.

Karen Walker is the best english teacher I ever had. I have dreaded english and essays all my life but she changed me. Her class was amazingly interesting, we were always talking about the reading and she even managed to tie in a few movies that really added to the depth of the course(we watched fight club, the matrix, and american beauty in class)

To pass her class you shouldn't miss more than 3 classes and you had better do all of the reading assigned. After all, it's an English class. A+

For her lower level classes, I would only recommend her if you are truly ready to buckle down and learn. We read 3 novels( great books!), wrote 5 papers ( not too hard, she is more than willing to help if you need it and gives 2 weeks to write it).Attend every class because she does give reading quizzes.

I've been at SRJC for 6 semesters, and she's the BEST professor I've had. She chooses excellent readings, she assigns challenging, but do-able essays, and she knows her stuff. She wants to prepare you for when you go to a University. She can be a hard grader, but only because she wants to help us be better. A very caring and inspirational teacher.

She assigns a lot of reading, and quizzes every day (but quite easy quizzes). She grades hard on her essays but gives you the chance to fix them if you like, and better yet she explains not only how to write/fix your papers, but WHY she grades them a certain way. She cares about teaching you, not testing you.

Furthermore, she makes her classes engaging and fascinating. Previously, English was not a class I had a history on enjoying, but Karen's class became the highlight of my week.

Karen is awesome! She helped me become a much better writer and student. Her class is modern and very interesting. I enjoyed coming to class, and students nearly never missed class. She teaches a rigorous 1A but makes it well worth the work. Karen is also extremely generous with her time during office hours and loves her students.

Took this class Fall '13. Karen is very enthusiastic about her work and I'd say her class was my favorite for that semester. She chose novels that were actually really great to read. She helps prep you for your essays and we had lots of good class discussions around the books. Would highly recommend.

Professor Walker is BY FAR my favorite instructor at the JC. She loves what she teaches and it reflects through her lectures. I took her 1a class in spring2015 and we focused on a techno-culture perspective. Very interesting topics, books, and classroom discussions. She helped me with a personal matter, and obviously cares about her students.

I had Karen for two semesters and two different literature classes, she promotes enlightening class discussions, gives essay topics that are actually interesting, and is an inspiring professor as she did not even start her schooling until she was 28! With a doctorate and clear passion for the subject I wish I could take every class she offers!

This class is of such HIGH QUALITY, as is Karen! She will make you a better writer & is very particular about a clear and cohesive academic essay style! The only homework will be: Reading (then reading quizzes each class based on reading, very doable!) & Essays (about 5 she gives great topics, so much fun to write!) She will not pass to just pass

Karen Walker is not a professor for everyone but I loved taking her and would do so again. She has readings due each class and a quiz on what you read. I never found the reading hard and as long as you do it the quizzes are easy. 4 papers equal 80% of your grade. Unclear what she wants on papers so go see her in office hours. Very accessible.

I sought out Karen as my Professor after a family recommendation. I absolutely loved her class. Her expectations are very clear, she follows her syllabus closely, and she is religious about her office hours. She WANTS her students to succeed and if you put in the energy and effort you will do so.

I decided to go back to school at 33 years old. I was ready to pursue my dream of working in special effects and theater until I met thus amazing teacher. She inspired me and taught me to love a subject I was miserable at in high school. Teaching me how to understand what Im reading by breaking it down and ruminating on it changed why I read.

There's a good amount of reading but no group projects or public speaking! She grades every paper with care and truly wants you to succeed. Take her!!

Karen makes her class very fun to be in and engages you in class. Also, her class theme (Dystopia, Utopia, and Techno-paranoia) is very interesting and relevant to current events. She also usually has several prompts to choose from for each Essay so, it is easier to write about something you are passionate about. Highly recommend Karen.

Karen was a great teacher. She gives 5 papers to write, but how she prepares you for them, grades them, and how much time she offers to you outside of class sets you up for success. One of the greatest professors I've had, even on zoom. The class is mostly focused on reading (great books), with short reading quizzes and four papers written throughout the semester. Took Karen For English 1A loved her so much, and took her again for English 5. She is truly passionate about teaching her students tools to succeed in the future. Participation does matter, and if you need help she will do anything possible to help. She is a tough grader. Be prepared to do the work. Highly recommend you take class. Loved her class!

This is my favorite professor. She provides amazing discussions and truly cares about her students! As long as you communicate and participate, you will always pass her class. I have taken her for two semesters and I will definitely take her again next semester.

Karen is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She makes sure every student fully understands the topics. Show up to the class and she will make sure you understand everything you need to move on to the next level. With only a few papers, she makes it easy to grasp the topics she gives you and pass. After my first paper, I received a low grade and feedback. Karen told me that my writing needed work and that she'd be willing to help me get there. Throughout the remanding of the semester, she helped me. I see so much improvement in my writing after taking her. She is the best English teacher I have ever had and I hope I can take her again.

Dr. Walker, is an incredible English teacher. I've been to 3 different community colleges in my time and never had a professor like her. Karen is willing to go so far and beyond to help her students with their writing and her class. She wants you to succeed and will go to any lengths to make that happen. Karen taught a great short story class. The reading, while extensive is no issue if you space it out and don't try to do it all at once. The material is eclectic and fascinating. She makes sure the course covers a great range. There are 4 papers a semester but instructions are very clear and we go over the criteria in class several times as well.

Best class I've ever taken. Dr. Walker presented the dark subject matter very well and found ways to keep class light and enjoyable even when studying bleakness and darkness. Dystopian Literature is a great course and Karen Walker is THE PROFESSOR to teach it. Can't say enough good things about her in so few characters but rest assured she rocks!

I absolutly loved taking Professor Walkers English 1A class. Even over zoom you can feel her passion for teaching, she made the class extremely relevant and relatable to the current times and it was very much so critical thinking. Her class really helped me take on broader perspectives on culture and happiness due to the perfectly curated reading.

I has Walker for 3 different classes. She is awesome. One of my personal favorite professors. She's take pride on her craft to teach her classes. lectures may take long sometime but its useful. Attendance and writing is key to pass her classes. Don't ignore on reading, she will give small quizzes on them but the question are easy if you read them.

Professor Karen is great! She grades essays swiftly and fairly, gives very useful feedback, assigns meaningful readings, and she is also willing to help. Although her lectures are sometimes a little long, they are quite useful. Her quizzes are very fair, and her papers are hard but doable. I hated English before taking her class but now I like it.

I've taken three classes from Karen, and each one has been more phenomenal than the next. Her classes follow the same format: lots of reading, with four essays interspersed throughout the semester, based on the reading. She is the only professor that has actively helped improve my writing--she cares. She goes above and beyond for her students.

Karen is the best english professor out there. If you are an english major or want a good professor, this is the best class to take. She will improve your writing immensely. There are 4 paper assignments along with reading around 70 pages a week. Each class there is an easy reading quiz and that counts as 1/5 of your grade. Highly recommend.

I absolutely loved having Dr. Walker as a professor, and I cannot recommend her enough. She has high expectations, but she makes sure that you can achieve them. I learned and improved a lot in her class.

I loved taking Karen's class! Your grade consists of four papers, and you take a short quiz at the beginning of every class. She spends a lot of time giving great feedback on your papers, so each one is better than the next. I felt that my writing and ability to structure essays improved tremendously because of her class. Would love to take again!!

She was The best introduction to college I could have asked for. SHE CARES! Its insane how she truly tries her best to help every student. Its important to go to the lectures because theres daily quizzes, but if you read, you'll pass! She makes everything possible as long as you put effort, but it must be clear that you want to learn. 10000/5!!!

Karen is the best instructor I have ever had and I adore her. She loves what she does and it shows. She cares deeply about her students. She will make you a better writer with her concise feedback. If you are having a hard time she will absolutely work with you. She has a bit of a cult following and many people follow her from class to class.

Definitely one of the best English teachers I've had! She's a great choice for people coming from high school because she helps you understand and structure your essays the way a college would want you to structure them - not how highschool wanted you to. There are 4 papers & easy daily quizzes that quiz you on the reading. Attendance is mandatory!

Professor Karen really does care for her students! Go to her office hours! (she is always more than happy to see you) I went to each office hour before an essay was due, so then she could give me her honest feedback. Because I went to her office hours I ended up getting an A on every paper. Please take her class, she is absolutely amazing. :)

Karen Walker gives excellent feedback and really gives time to students who need her help. She does not judge and she truly makes you understand everything that she teaches a long with knowing how to write an excellent academic essay.

She really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Barely any homework just some light reading and essays due every few weeks. She does have a small quiz at the beginning of every class but as long as you do the reading you will pass no problem. She picks interesting books that are fun to read tho. Great teacher I would 100% take again.

Karen is one of my favorite humans. She truly wants the best for her students and is always willing to work with you to help you produce your best work. She might be a bit tough and not super lenient but that is because she asks you to respect her time as a person. No matter which class of hers you take, just do the reading and you'll pass.

She loves what she does and thrives to make every semester unique. She goes in dept with her work and is willing to adapt according to the classes needs. She grades tough and provides lots of feedback to make sure you succeed beyond the classroom. I'd suggest anyone new to the JC to take her class.

She was fantastic. She valued work/life balance and life beyond school. Just communicate, do your reading, and submit work on time - that's all it takes. One of the finest professors I've had. Incredibly supportive and patient. If you shirk responsibility, you might not appreciate her, but otherwise, you'll recognize her greatness.

Karen was the best teacher I had at SRJC. She is a super smart and passionate instructor. I am currently at Sonoma State, which Karen is an alumnus of; and one semester with her has helped me hugely as colleges request essays about form and theme. There is constant reading BUT IT'S A GREAT USE OF YOUR TIME! I cannot recommend this teacher more.

Professor Karen's class is a great intro to college writing. While attendance is mandatory, the workload is manageable - just do the readings and you'll do well. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for essay prep!

The most fabulous teacher you will ever have. If you want an easy A, she is not for you. But, if you want to challenge yourself to do more, and become wonderful at writing and genuinely thinking, Karen is FANTASTIC! I loved taking her ENGL 1A class, she was extremely caring and a great professor. She has clear grading, offers 3 absences before your grade slips, and while you do a small quiz at the start of each class, they are very easy so long as you've been reading! There were only 4 papers throughout the entire class as well! I definitely recommend.

Karen was great in this class! She was very understanding and gave wonderful feedback on each paper turned in. Her class is a lot of group discussion, but if you explain to her your struggles with that, she is very understanding. I took her my senior year of high school and had an amazing time. She's an amazing person and I highly recommend her.

Karen's teaching style is very direct and stays on topic. (Doesnt tolerate slackers) Simple reading quizzes everyday, no large tests, a handful of essays. She has very specific grading criteria that may be hard to meet at first, but she is more than willing to walk you through your papers and help. She grew on me and helped me out so much!

One of the best and easiest classes I have taken at the JC. She really cares about what she teaches and really wants to see people succeed. This class helped me write better papers and establish English skills I still use today. Assignments are vary clear and very manageable, just do the assigned reading and turn papers in on time.

She was my first introduction to what a good professor is. She cares, whether she is providing feedback and constructive criticism or showing up rain or shine to teach.Take this class if you want to read fascinating books, improve your writing, and understand that learning is a life long pursuit. Don't take this class if you just want to pass.

English 1A was my first class going back to college. I had such a pleasant experience with Karen being my professor that it gave me the excitement and courage to push forward. There are lots of good books assigned and class participation in discussions is highly recommended. I would take this class again for the fun of it!

She's literally so amazing! However, her class can be a bit difficult. It's extremely reading heavy, we read four books in one semester and every book had an essay to do at the end. Luckily she is so sweet, she gives amazing feedback, grades fairly and occasionally offers extra credit. Warning, she will make you read sad books.
