Karen is a good teacher. If you do not understand something, she will be there to help. There is a quiz every Friday, but there are only three tests in the semester and a final. She gives EC every couple of weeks but make sure you study because it is a tough class. She says only 9 out of the 100 students will get an A and so far, I think thats true
VERY difficult class you have to really put forth a lot of effort just to earn a B-. She's a super tough grader on all of the quizzes and I honestly think she takes off points just because she wants to. Her extra credit does not help your grade whatsoever, will maybe raise .05 of your grade. She also lost our extra credit we turned in 2 months ago.
Not bad of a class. Chemistry is a difficult subject, so you will have to work hard for an A. Powerpoints usually stick to the main points. Read the book, go over your notes and do the worksheets&Hw and you will do fine. Quizzes and exams sometimes have questions from HW and the practice exams she gives before an exam. Ask questions! she will help
I had karen for chemistry lab and she is a very nice lady and willing to help. Karen made lab easy and fun to learn. I was nervous about taking chem lab because everyone said its hard, but taking it with karen had prove me wrong. Turn in your lab reports and you will get at least a B-. She also give you an extra day to do your report.
Her grading is fair. Your grades should reflect the amount of effort you put into this class! There are quizzes almost every week and they are worth 10 points. She doesn't grade homework, so it's based on quizzes, exams, and bonus points. Sometimes, she'll throw in a worksheet to be done in class. I enjoyed your class and she is very helpful.
She has her good and her bad days. The few times I went to her office hours she was very rude. If there is talking in her class she ends class early. I got a tutor and he explained biochem soooo much better. She mentions important things you should know but does not explain them. I had to have my tutor teach me what she didn't.
Difficult class all around and Karen doesn't make it any easier. She tends to go through the powerpoint slides very fast which makes it really hard to take notes half the time. Quizzes every week which are worth 10 points. I would definitely recommend getting a tutor for this class because she never explains anything in depth.
She makes sure we understand what we are doing in the lab and on the lab reports, if help is needed she will be there
Not the worst teacher, but not a good one either. Some days she seems eager to help and make sure students understand the material and other days she whizzes through the lecture to where it's difficult to take notes. She doesn't explain/ teach effectively and makes the class harder than it has to be. She does offer extra credit though.
Karen is a very friendly professor that makes you work hard for the grade you want but at the end it's all worthwhile because she meticulously discusses how to do the lab assignments correctly. She goes out of her way to help students get the grade they want.
You need to STUDY!!!!!! ALOT Can't slack off. Her exams and quizzes are no joke to her she curves alot (:
This class was hard! Karen moved quickly through the chapters so make sure you read the textbook beforehand. There is a quiz every week and she will also throw bonus points if needed. Do your homework because it's worth more than the quizzes and can save you from getting a C! She doesn't give a lot of examples so you have to find your own.
I loved this class! I mean I hated chem, but loved the professor. Karen gave us SO many oppurtunities for EC, if you failed its probably due to not reading the text/not going to class. This class is not the most difficult if you apply yourself and read the text along with attending the lectures.. MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK FOR AN A!!!
She is really nice, she offered help aoutside of class if you don't get something about your lab report. I really recommend her.
This class is all about you get out what you put in. She moves through the material incredibly fast but definitely knows her stuff. It's tough but if you study and get a tutor you will do okay. She has a huge curve to where if you get at least a 60% you get a C.
The practice tests and quizzes she provides don't help at all. Everything she says won't be on the test will probably be on the test, even topics she's barely covered. Says the formulas will always be provided? No--memorize the formulas. Examples given in class are too basic to help at all with the difficult test and quiz questions.
This course is difficult. It consists of online homework that is worth 10 points each week, 10 point quizzes every Friday, and four exams. You must buy the sapling pass for online homework ($40) and you need to buy the textbook. The material is gone through very rapidly and some of the things are not explained in depth. Get a tutor and good luck.
Karen is definitely the most difficult professor I have had at Stan. She expects students to read before she lectures and her tests are mostly on things she never taught us. She's one of those professors who expects students to learn on their own, at least that's the way I see her. I do not recommend her class.
Pay attention and get a tutor/study group or be prepared to work very hard on your own. Lectures aren't too helpful (she really likes if you ask questions) but she is always willing to help you outside of class! This is a nursing prereq so it's not gonna be easy. Gives out a lot of excred and the hw helps boost your grade! Weekly quizzes.
Dunlap lectures too fast and I couldn't keep up with her. I pretty much had to study on my own to understand the material but some of it, I didn't even get. She's also no help when you have questions. I felt like she made me look dumb in front of the class. So study hard and good luck to those who are taking her in the future. She's tough!
If you're a nursing major, I must warn you that Dunlap is not the best professor. She lectures too fast, her tests are difficult, and even though she does offer extra credit, it still does not do much. Make sure you read the textbook and do some practice problems if you want an A because she does not teach very well.
I read her bad reveiws and decided to give her a try. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. She lectures way too fast and her test are only 25 questions. She does not explain everything that is on the test! Avoid taking her at all costs; your GPA will thank you.
This class is not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be. My advice is take advantage of the easy chapters 1-5. Do the homework. Tests are not too bad but some studying is required. Go to lecture and ask questions. As long as you put forth some effort you'll get an A. She also offers extra credit and has a grading curve.
Prof. Dunlap was clear on what she expected from students and constantly reminded us to keep up with assignments. Her lectures are fast paced and stick to only main points; you have to read the textbook in order to pass. Tests are difficult if you haven't read the chapter or studied. Do not depend on the lectures as a study guide. Weekly Quizzes.
Weekly quizzes, exams are only 25 questions. your textbook will be your best friend for the semester. Show up to lecture bc you wont pass if you don't but I can not stress this enough READ THE BOOK AND DO THE PROBLEMS IN THE BACK ... if you do then you will be fine. Study, do your homework on sapling, and please take advantage of the extra credit
Please get a tutor on the first day of class, they will be soooo much help!!
You HAVE to read and take notes before lectures. Try not to fall behind on reading. Do the homework before the Friday quizzes and try to do the problems in the textbook. You really have to study and put time into this class. It is hard but it is not impossible.
Very easy class
She is very snarky when you ask for help. Lectures are too fast and she expects you to understand on the first try. Get tutor first day and establish a study group if you want to pass
Fast paced lectures and really hard tests. HIGHLY reccomend getting a tutor the first day only way I managed to pass. Read lecture notes before and the homework should help as you can guess as much as you want until you get the right answer .
The Professor is really nice, but the class itself was really hard. You will fail if you dont read your notes and the book. When she says study the lectures in advance she really mean it!! Study Study Study the lectures in advance it will help a lot! Dont just rely on the study guide too, its kinda different question from actual test!
It's a tough class but if you take good notes, read the textbook, do the homework and study; it will be fine. She gives past exams as study guides, they are helpful and some questions may be the same. She isn't very approachable and comes off as rude sometimes. Doesn't really want people to ask questions and she looks annoyed when people do.
Hated ever minute of her class and I only saw her once a week for discussion. Do yourself a favor and do not take her. She never answers questions and gets frustrated with students easily. I wish I had known so that I could have taken a different professor.
Have her for discussion, she talks for 85% and then expects the whole paper to be due at the end of the class period. Not a great professor, doesn't help very much, never knows what goes on in the main lecture part of the course, would never take her class again
She reads straight off of the slides and doesnt explain in detail. Her exams are really hard and there is usually at least one quiz a week. If you take this class then you should expect to do a lot of reading/studying outside of class to understand the material. good luck
DO NOT TAKE!!! She is one if not the worse professor in the chemistry department. She is very poor at giving lectures and will stop example problems in the middle with out teaching the rest of it. Prepare to have loads of homework that was never taught in class. The exams are never on what you were told would be on there. Crash Course is the savior
Worst Professor ever. She is so rude and just a miserable person. If you are taking this for nursing pre recs, do not! Take Gen Chem instead since it is easier and you'll be able to apply to different nursing programs since bio chem is not transferable. Get ready to teach yourself. She will test you and have homework she doesn't even teach.
She's a really tough grader and if you don't show up to class, you'll fail.
Karen is great, at least for lab! She may seem a bit hard to approach at first, but I think that is just because her attention is split between 30 students asking questions during lab and she is trying to be efficient. She made lab a lot less intimidating. Even if you have high % errors, justify your results and you won't lose many points at all!
Chemistry is an extremely hard subject and Dunlap will remind you. You have quizzes every Friday and lectures every day. Go to her office hours, read the textbook, get a tutor from the tutoring center and pay attention in class. I recommend taking general chem instead if high school chem was hard for you. Good luck!
Honestly her class isnt that hard. If you know your basic chemistry or have taken AP Bio in HS then its just review! Her lectures are fast but thats why she gives you the PowerPoints before. Before going to class, I recommend you taking notes from the PowerPoint so that during class you can just listen to her. READ! Do problems in the book STUDY
If you planning to take chem 2100 for nurses I would recommend to consider taking general chem instead. Prof Dunlap is caring but chem is hard in general and her practice exams&quizzes are different than the actual quizzes and exams. Go to her office hours, read the textbook, get a tutor from the tutoring center and pay attention in class.
Horrible professor. Extremely rude. Shes very vicious towards students. Outside of class shes very nice but if you get an answer wrong when asked she will chastise and humiliate you. This is not a class of growth and she takes everything extremely personal.
This is a hard class so you have to constantly study and go over notes. Can be manageable if you study for an 1hr everyday. GET A TUTOR it will also really help you understand the class. Quizzes every Friday which is helpful to get you to understand the chapter. 3 midterms and final. Take notes or review them before class starts. JUST STUDY STUDY!
Study this class will be extremely difficult if you don't study or go over notes. Take notes before class starts bc she flies through them. Quizzes every Friday, 3 midterm, final. Offers a good amount of extra credit. Get a tutor and talk to people in class. Not as hard as people make it out to be, just study chem is hard in general. You got this!
This class is all based on your performance if you study and take time to do the problems youll pass the class. STUDY, this class is not as hard as some people make it out to be. Get a tutor. Study. Do problems in the book. If you do that youll be fine. Offers a lot of extra credit as well.
If you are not willing to put in the time and effort, don't take this class, you get out what you put in. I would highly recommend reading the lecture slides and textbook prior to attending class. Studying the worksheets and practice exams help a lot for Exams. Weekly Quizzes are what hurt me the most, stay on top of the curriculum, ask questions!
She was awful. I dreaded coming to her class because I knew I would leave the lecture feeling like I learned nothing. I've heard from other students that take it for nursing that she is the reason they changed their major. If you want to get in to the nursing program I highly suggest you do not take her class. She gives weekly quizzes & hard exams.
Do not miss a lab, or you will fail the class. Dunlap can seem unapproachable, but do not be scared. She is more than willing to answer questions. There are about 11 labs during the semester, plus lab notebooks checks. Must turn in every lab (printed out) at the start of a new lab session. Is not that tough of a grader.
Okay, so I've only been in this class for a couple of weeks, and the homework sucks. Its not difficult, but it's online. This usually wouldn't be an issue, but for whatever reason SO many people have been having problems with Pearson. I paid ALOT for this online textbook that i can't even access. She also doesn't teach, just assigns reading.
She really views students as extremely stupid, she absolutely hates teaching biochemistry and does nothing to hide it. She brags about escaping to her cabin in Tahoe so dont try to email me on a Friday because as soon as that school day ends I wont see it which would be fine except whenever she is accessible outside of class shes rude.
Her class is very hard but she is a nice lady. Believe her when she says you will not pass if you don't really the notes ahead of time.
This class was pretty hard. Mostly because she wouldnt really teach mostly just lecture. You really need to take your time studying and doing the homework ahead of time. Do the problems in the book for sure. Final exam just study the previous 3 exams and worksheets. Goodluck!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT TAKING THIS CLASS! Dr. Dunlap is a nice lady but horrible professor. lectures consist of her skimming through slides and going over examples poorly. she is horrible with email. never responds. She excused me from a quiz but still put a 0 in grades, emailed her many times. she said she will fix but never did on my final grade.
Karen is pretty direct with what she expects of you, yes you will need to study and yes you will need to read the chapter ahead of the time in class, however, the time you can put into doing your work has positive results, I would recommend a study group and playing music while you read chapters. It was a tough class but it's not impossible to pass
You NEED to pay attention! If you have questions she is more than happy to help. The more you go to her office, you realize she is actually a nice person. Her exams are hard, but they are also not easy. You will have to put your part to pass the class. All her lectures are online, so you can write them before class (I recommend doing it),
Unclear grading rubric. Difficult to understand how she wants assignments formatted. She will mark you down for errors in formatting, but you aren't told how to format. You have to guess, and if you guess wrong, you fail.
One of the worst professors I've seen. She is aloof and uncaring to the concerns of her students. It is clear she genuinely does not enjoy teaching. She frustrates easily with students when they fail to pick up complex topics she has just begun discussing. Be prepared to grovel at her every whim to pass the class, as she is impossible to please.
I am speechless when it comes to her. She is one of the worst professor in our university. She is carless about your effort and hard work. She answers her emails based on her mood. She rushes just to finish the lab in an hour online. She skips throughout the assigned experiment video by the Chemistry department.
Professor Dunlap is the worst uncaring professor ever. If you are having any difficulties don't even consider running to her. Never will I take a course with her again. She gets frustrated when students ask too many questions. Her tests don't ever match the homework so get ready to have a curveball thrown at you each quiz or test.
This class is extremely difficult. If you are a nursing student I would not recommend you taking this class you will fail. You pretty much have to know chemistry really well going into this class. During class she does not teach she is only reviewing problems that you should already know how to do.
I took this class during covid so we were completely online. Worst class i have taken in my whole academic career. She does not care if you pass her class. She skips through her lecture slides and tells you to look through them yourself. Be ready to teach yourself the material. I would stay away for sure.
Her lectures are NOT helpful. I thought the homework would help as well, it didn't. If you are constantly needing to get help from her or a tutor. It's best to drop the class or take someone else. She would get mad if you asked her questions (and it showed), as if you should already know the answer to it.
Don't underestimate this class, the more time you put into it the more you will get out. Lectures focus on simple concepts. To really do good in this class study the textbook and use her review sheets, also write your own notes.
Def. the hardest class I've ever taken. She is super rude and makes students feel dumb. People are scared to even ask questions bc she's very intimidating. BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOURSELF! Exams are hard. Super happy I passed bc you have to work super hard to get the grade you want. Every quiz and exam is TIMED. ATTEND SI! Happy I'm done w this class
Not bad, I have a good science background so I had little trouble in her class. Most other students hate her for various reasons. For an online class, we worked a lot with Pearson Education and Blackboard. Lectures and additional resources are recorded and put into folders on Blackboard.
This was my second time with Karen, I failed the first time. You have to show up to her online lectures because she does little quizzes that count towards your participation. She was no better than the last time I took her, make sure you read the chapter before she lectures
Shes very serious and unforgiving as she will give you a straight zero if you dont factual proof that you were sick or had family issues. She is lecture heavy and uses all PowerPoint and the textbook is super necessary. She isnt easy to talk to but tell her or else youll fail. Get the actual textbook and STUDY! Go to SI sessions and study!
Great lab instructor, gives a lot of notes in order to do the report well.
Great lab instructor, gives a lot of notes in order to do the report well. Gives feedback and will help you if needed. She does expect you to understand the procedure and how to set up the apparatus before coming to class.
EXTREMELY difficult and fast paced. You basically teach yourself a new chapter each week. No curves, no extra credit and an unreasonable amount of time given for timed quizzes/exams. Homework takes HOURS. PowerPoints can be 30 slides for like 8 sections in one chapter that YOU have to teach yourself. I would AVOID taking this chem class if you can.
You have to teach yourself and she expects you to go over 30+ slides a week before her lecture while balancing other homework she assigns. The homework is exceptionally timeconsuming. She gives limited time for the quiz: 10 question quiz in 15 minutes! It is ridiculous. Take the alternative courses for this class! Probably better than this course.
Be wise when picking your lab partner, my partner and I worked together even outside of class and we both exceled for it. The notebook (homework) is very time consuming and tedious but not awful. Lab is fun as you don't have to sit and be talked at the whole time, she goes over what to do and then you get to do it.
Honestly if you can take it with someone else, you should. had some good jokes
Respectfully, the worst professor I've ever had. Expects you to learn everything on your own and believes that the class should just be a review. While "teaching" she goes extremely fast and teaches so much information all at once it's a bit overwhelming. Expect to study A LOT and to know everything even though that's what the class is for.
She literally ended class early because no one answered her question. The only good thing about her class is that all her students make fun of her, so a lot of fun jokes. Shes awful and literally the bane of my existence.
At her core, she is a good teacher. Although this class is hard, she did a great job lecturing & covering material. However, 3/4 through the semester she stopped teaching. She had some family matters which I understand but when she came back, her lectures were horrible. Walked out during one lecture and skipped multiple sections we later tested on.
Surprisingly I actually got a 110.4% in this god forsaken course... Please just follow a routine and do anything and everything to get through the material on top of connecting with this professor. Hag worthy title. Good luck... you are definitely going to need it.
Only take this class if you already know a lot about chemistry. She assigns weekly homework(~3hours of work) and has quizzes/tests every other week. Best advice: keep your quizzes/tests for the final(cumulative btw), PRACTICE!!(The only way to learn CHemIstry is to do CHemiStry! :D), and stay motivated! Professor can get annoyed, walked out once.
If you plan on applying for multiple nursing schools take Chem1100 instead because other nursing schools DOESNT ACCEPT Chem2100 + they require lab which Chem2100 doesnt have. You are expected to learn the material prior going into class. Ends class early if no one answers her lecture problems. Ask questions in class? She gets irritated. No support.
The homework takes HOURS, online, around 20-30 ques each week. Her mood varies, some days seems eager to answer our ques, some days seemed annoyed. 2-3 extra credits worksheets, all in class, so go to every class because she doesn't tell in advance. the textbook helped more than her lectures. Lots of material so study & listen to the other reviews!
Worst professor hands down. She does not care if you pass or fail and makes it know. Irritated easily and gives no support to students. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! Dunlap makes this class so hard to pass which is awful as it is a pre req to nursing. Just take the other chem classes instead, even though its more you will be better off.
This is a tough course. Countless hours of homework every week, you read 1 chapter a week, worksheets, pearson questions, 7 quizzes, no final. It's a very fast-paced class and her quizzes are very tricky. Participate during lectures bc she likes it, and take every assignment seriously. She's good at simplifying concepts and she gave extra credit.
The way this professor teaches requires you to be in class everyday, although attendance is not mandatory. You won't understand anything if you don't show up. There was a "quiz" every other Friday, but they are more like tests. Online homework was pretty easy, but nothing like the tests she gives. Would recommend to take another course.
The class was fairly easy at the beginning, she was pretty good at lecturing and making sure students understood. Then around half-way through the semester it was as if she stopped caring. She would often cancel lectures due to technological problems, instead of just working around them. Her class went down-hill fast.
Dr. Dunlap provides the powerpoint presentation on Canvas. You are expected to go over the power points and there is also expectations to read from the online textbook via Pearson. The lecture example problems are not similar to those on the quizzes. She does give students time to go over their quiz and advise her if there needs to be a revision.
Very unpleasant teacher with no regards for your education or struggles. When asked with simple questions, she acts like you should already know the answer and has said "I don't know, you tell me" to students. Does not give you a clear grading criteria and you will be docked points off of the smallest things. Take someone else if you can.
I found Dr. Dunlap rather unpleasant to be around at times due to constant mood swings. The labs were pretty easy and if you met the requirements and A in the class was easily attainable. I hope she changes the class by being a bit more helpful during the labs and less hot headed at times.
This particular class is not as bad as some reviews make it seem. It's not difficult to pass as long as you pay attention, take good notes, and try on the homework. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I'd recommend going as she goes over examples in class. Review the practice exams; they are very similar to the real exams.
Doesn't care about students passing and she makes test very difficult. She assigns way too much work than what is relevant for the course units. She also says alot of discouraging things and test have material that are barely focused on in the class. I would not recommend this professor for inorganic/organic chemistry if you have the option.
She assigns a lot of homework and random quizzes on short notice. The homework also has nothing to do with exams plus she she grades tough you have to have exact spelling or numbers/decimals or you will be marked wrong. Also only 3 tries for each homework question. Good luck ! You will need it for Dunlop's course.
Attend SI and go to tutoring for this course, you're going to need it. Lecture was fine until midway through the semester. She ended class early one time because no one was able to answer her question. If you have the chance, take another chemistry course that's equivalent to this one. Best of hope.
Please do not take this professor if you have other options. She is discouraging and she assigns an unrealistic amount of work. SI sessions and tutors don't even help with the homework and at the end of the semester she starts throwing multiple assignments and makes them due all in one day. The test also are nothing like the lectures.
Dr Dunlap was one of the toughest graders I have ever seen. I mean it, if you miss one tiny thing on a lab report, she will dock you, and a lot. I really had to fight for that A-.
Every day I walk into this class, I wish I didn't. I have learned absolutely nothing from this class, the lectures are so fast paced, she talks like you should know everything already and is not aware that her whole entire class does not understand. Take at MJC if you can.
I had her for lab and even though she seems kind of intimidating at first she is actually very nice if you talk to her. Helped with faulty lab equipment and was pretty easy grader on labs. I'm a procrastinator and did all lab reports the day they were due and still comfortably got a 94%, she is pretty of picky on pre-labs though.
She can be intimidating, but pretty nice once you talk to her. The lab reports are fairly easy if you follow the standards. She is good for lab.
Professor Dunlap is very direct. I felt it hard to ask questions with her intimidating demeanor. Overall, she is a nice person. My biggest complaints would be that she is very picky with grading, and overall respect for her students. If you get stuck in her class, it's not the end of the world however, please for the love of God don't be late!
