One of the worst professors I have EVER had! It was her 1st semester teaching, & she clearly did not know what she was doing. She read from the powerpoint just to get through the lecture, not trying to actually teach us, & got off topic all the time. She was super disrespectful to her students, & she gave study guides but they didn't help at all.
Clifton is a tough teacher but Bio 1 is a hard intro class. She is a good teacher and wants you to succeed but takes no slack. Her tests are hard in general. I took her in the middle of the University restructuring the class so I can't blame her for all of the confusion. She is nice outside of class and wants you to succeed. Be ready to study!
She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. The first day of class she bragged about how everyone fails her class & if you go to her with a question she will not help you. She is very rude & sarcastic when you talk to her. However, the fact that she takes pride in students failing will give you motivation. The class can be passed if you study.
I love Dr. Clifton! At the beginning of her class she was very tough but after the drop period I began to love her. She weeds out in the beginning. She is helpful and knows her stuff. She will work with u and she cares about her students. If you go to class and study you will be fine. She even gave extra credit near the end.
Dr. Clifton is a good teacher. She really tries to make the material interesting and welcomes thoughtful questions in class. Bio 1 is difficult, so be prepared to work for your grade. It's not required, but reading the textbook will definitely help.
Not necessarily a tough class but she gives a quiz every class so if you don't show up then you won't pass. Lectures are long and boring.
Dr. Clifton is a really great professor as long as your willing to be a great student. Do the homework, study the material, READ THE MATERIAL BEFORE CLASS, take the quizzes seriously and you will pass. She is extremely easy to go to, and is very interested in her students.
Pretty specific on what she wants, just a few test (that are multiple choice) and online quizzes every week. Pretty tough though, but certainly passable if you put in time and effort to learn biology. Gets you ready for upper level bio classes quite well.
Pretty easy class. Lots of homework, but its pretty easy to do.
Clifton might come across as intimidating during the lectures but is a totally different person during office hours! she will sit down and explain everything to you over and over again. DO THE HOMEWORK AND QUIZZES ONLINE. Tests can be challenging so be prepared. Very helpful and caring, would take again!
Dr. Clifton is very scary in lecture, but she is actually a very nice person and easy to talk to during her office hours. You will take four exams and a final, all are very difficult! Make sure to do the homework and quizzes online, they will really save you if you don't do well on the tests.
Dr. Clifton's class is the hardest class I've taken by far. I love the challenge though. Her tests are very difficult and studying and reading the book is essential to passing the class.
Clifton's a pretty decent professor. Very knowledgable, but some of the knowledge presented during lectures is useless. Have to go class for participation grade, but it's not awful. She can be funny. She's very clear as to her expectations for the class as well. Overall, I liked her. Put in the effort and you can pass with an A or B.
Her lectures can be very long and boring. She goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with what you are talking about. We spent 5 classes on one powerpoint. She is very dull and repeats what she says/concepts a lot. She also has some very interesting views on common sense stuff as well as she corrects the book often.
Dr. Clifton's class is HARD! Mastering Biology is a requirement. Expect to read your textbook because the lectures are long and drawn out. She doe not give extra credit, but the homework does help with your grade. She teaches very monotone, and the lectures are BORINGGGGG!
One word, BAD. If you have an option to take a different teacher for bio 1 or bio 2 TAKE THEM! I had her for both and it was a daily struggle, she just is not a good teacher and she says uh and um every other word. I was very disappointed that she was the only professor offered at the time for biology, kind of made me dislike biology.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. I will never forget the day that she had the entire class do a clicker question before the test asking what grades the class expected only to laugh and say the last class avg. was a 63/D and talked about our unrealistic optimism as she passed out the test. She also tests on topics not covered in class.
I feel like the general classes are always a pain but I like Dr. Clifton. She is helpful and really smart, sometimes she gets off topic and she can be a little sassy. If you look at the power points and read the book, you should be fine! Go to class and do the homework! Also take the mastering bio cumulative tests!
Her tests can be hard if you don't study. Seriously, if you are taking her class - STUDY. If you go to her at the end of the year complaining that you are going to fail, one of two things will happen. She will ask you to show her your notes. 1) If you show that you pay attention in class, she will look into helping you 2) Bad notes Bad grade.
After reading the other reviews of Dr. Clifton, I was worried that the class was going to be a disaster. But in my experience, she gives you everything you need to pass the tests. Her study guides are phenomenal, if you actually sit down and write out the answers to the objectives you'll more than pass the class. Her lectures are a bit dry though.
Dr. Clifton's class can be challenging, so be prepared for A LOT of memorization. She is very intelligent and really knows what she is talking about. To get a good grade in this class you have to study a lot, and don't get behind. If you memorize and understand all the powerpoint slides then you should do fine. I hope you like plants...
Dr. Clifton is nowhere near as bad as some of the other reviews say! Biology by default is a difficult subject, and she does a good job of explaining it. The homework she assigns has a purpose and helps you to learn and retain the material we're going over. She also posts awesome study guides that usually have everything you need to know for tests.
Clifton is a great teacher and definitely knows what she's talking about, but she also expects you to know as well. For the exams look back at any topic that has its own slide on her PowerPoints is almost always going to be on the test. Overall I would recommend taking one of her classes just know that you definitely have to put effort in to pass.
She gives off the "i dont care to help you" vibe, and isnt easy to talk to when youre having trouble.
Have had her for both Bio 1 and 2, and she is amazing. She can be pretty funny in lecture sometimes, and she always really knows what she is talking about. The material is difficult so it's important to attend each lecture and READ THE BOOK to fully understand each concept.
I had Dr. Clifton for Biology 1 for majors and she is truly one of the best teachers I've ever had. The material is concept heavy so it's important that your read, study, and attend lecture, but she presents the material in a way that's easy to understand and she truly wants students to succeed. Would highly recommend her!
Very straightforward with what is expected. Do the homework, read the book, take notes, and you will be just fine!
First of all, this professor is unprofessional as all get out. A good friend of mine went to her for help and she was told that she was an underachiever. Clifton repeatedly gets her own notes factually wrong and then will count questions on exams wrong even though there is proof she gave us the wrong material. Absolutely horrible person and teacher
Clifton really isn't as bad as other reviewers make her seem. She's very straight forward and gives you everything you need in order to pass the class. Go the pass workshops, they help and she gives extra credit for attending. The material in this class is conceptual so majority of the difficulty comes from having to change study habits.
I took bio 1 and 2 for majors with her and really enjoyed her class. She posts the power points online so focus on writing down what she actually says in class and you will pass.
Terrible teacher. She goes way out of her way to NOT be available for questions before class or during her office hours. She gives study guides but they don't really seem to have anything to do with what's actually on the test. She also grades you for using your clicker, but if for any reason your clicker isn't working, she will not tell you.
I'm honestly shocked at all of the negative reviews! I LOVE this professor! I currently have a B in the class, but that is my own fault (I always wait until the weekend before to study). She is one of the best professors I've had and if you go up after class to talk to her she will help you! Trust me, take this professor!
This online course was trying a new style of teaching where there are never any quizzes or exams. It consists of interactive modules that are worth points based on how you participate and answer questions in the modules. A new module opened every week (or every 2) and there was about a month for each. Weekly discussion posts are required.
BSC 1005 was super easy online with Dr. Clifton. She had everything described in the syllabus and all the assignments were super easy. They do take some time so I would recommend doing them over a few days rather than waiting till the due date. Super easy A though.
Dr. Clifton is an amazing professor. She is very organized and has other material to study in preparation for quizzes and exams. The course itself is hard. Not gonna lie. You do have to study for this class and the book was essential to this course. This class was my favorite class I have taken so far.
Dr. Clifton definitely knows what she's talking about in lecture. It's apparent that she really cares about her students and understands what they're going through. She makes sure that we understand the procedures for each week and always helps us out when we're stuck on what happened and what to do in SEA-PHAGES. The class is absolutely enjoyable!
As a lecturer, she is not my favorite. She talks forever and I find it hard to not zone out. Her tests are pretty hard and most of the time they are very detailed, so pay attention to the details and not just the big picture. However, she takes time out of her lecture to teach us how to improve and test better and that shows she cares.
Dr. Clifton has been an amazing professor! She is so kind and really wants you to succeed, but she expects you to truly put in the effort to make good grades. She is very accessible outside of class, and she always made lectures very fun! I have had Dr. Clifton for Biology 2 as well as SEAPHAGES research lab. I HIGHLY recommend taking her classes!
You really have to pay attention to what she is saying not just what is on the powerpoint, and it helps to read the book. The exams are extremely detailed oriented and the questions she asks are very specific. Several times during the semester she rambles on about topics causing us to get behind schedule and had to play catch-up at end of semester.
Although there were a couple silly lab projects that took hours to do, her other labs, quizzes, and discussions were all very easy. Definitely recommend taking her classes, as long as you read whatever she assigns, you will pass the exams.
She doesn't give extra credit or ways to improve your grade if you aren't doing well. She goes on tanjents in class that aren't applicable to the class. If you fail 2/5 of the exams, you basically wont pass the class. She spent the first 45 min of about 5 classes after each exam saying we need to study more in different ways.
I had Clifton for BSC2011 as well as her SEA-PHAGES research program. She is the absolute best professor that I've ever had. She cares so deeply for her students and is always willing to help. However, she does make you work for it. She wants to push you and encourages that you make discoveries on your own. This builds confidence! Read your book!
I seriously loved Professor Clifton. I had her for online biology and this is the most stress free class EVER!! You have a module due in biobeyond every two weeks and a discussion question every week but they are purely opinion based and so easy!! She answers her emails pretty fast and is seriously so sweet. I would 100% take her again!
Awful, never have I felt so robbed of class and lecture time. Normally, most would consider less lecture time a good thing. However for this professor, she decided to place all the lectures online and instead used actual lecture time for note taking tips and participation which ultimately amounts to one wait for an hour and a half just to leave,
I'm honestly shocked by any and all of the positive reviews for bio lecture. Maybe this year she's decided to give up entirely.
She is extremely dismissive. If its not her job don't expect her to help out. Ive tried to ask for her help or clarification on things and she was condescending to me every time. Only class i almost failed. Class meetings are a joke and her online lectures contain too much information to process and she never repeates the material with you. Awful!
I took her online, so I didn't experience her personality at all. She always got back to me relatively quickly on email. Her pathophysiology class was quite difficult. A lot of the questions on quizzes were memorization based, and the textbook is an invaluable resource. BUY IT! Overall, if you're willing to put in the work, you'll do well.
Very condescending, always "right". Think notes are safe? Nope, she grades those sometimes based on what she thinks appropriate. Graded 13/20 on 2 pages of notes for missing 2 little details. Projects repeat learned content or don't correlate with subject. I get A's on my tests and online work, but that isn't enough. Pick another if you can.
The tests were hard for me to pass but in the end Mrs. Clifton was a good teacher.
Dr Clifton was not helpful to the class. In light of COVID and the mental health effects of the pandemic, Clifton was not understanding. She down talked our class on several lecture days. It wasnt a day you went to class, that you didnt feel stupid because of some remark she gave you.
Clifton during the beginning of the semester seemed nice. After the first few exams she started to degrade us and talk down to us like we were children. Any worksheet she gave out, she would not help. She would pick up your paper and tell you that Some of these answers will not get points. and leave. She barely replies to email.
Dr. Clifton routinely talks down to students. I myself received a good grade but only because I studied a lot, but the vast majority of students are failing and she almost refuses to teach in class. She assigns students to make outlines most classes, which obviously isn't helping the class. Even stated "my job isn't to teach you". Simply not nice
She repeatedly talks down to students and doesnt have empathy towards those who are genuinely struggling with the course material. You can barely hear her in class and she doesnt repeat what was just said so unless youre sitting at the front of the room youre extremely confused
If you're taking this class online, be sure you have access to a monitor type computer. Your laptop will not run the BioBeyond program 100% of the time. But, the content is easy enough! Do the work, do it on time, and you'll get an A. You can even redo lessons! Dr. Clifton gets back to you quick!
I took Clifton in person (worst mistake of my semester). Her online portion was alright but PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER IN PERSON. She's condescending and refuses to even listen to your questions. She gets SO irritated, mad, etc. about every little thing (especially technology). She is mean and is always all over the place. Exams are HARD and in person.
She really is very condescending. Whenever we ask for help, we would always get a sarcastic response or just a rude comeback. Also, she wastes valuable lecture time to give us "study tips" that really don't help at all. Please do yourself a favor and take another professor for bio 2 if you can.
While this class had some difficult points, I didn't experience any issues. She was really helpful and understanding when I had car issues. You'll get participation grades each class, they are graded tough, but they can be helpful.
Patho with Dr. Clifton was great. The class had a lot of information you had to learn, but overall as long as you used the book you'll do good. I would recommend either buying the physical book or renting it out as majority of the exams come from the books. She was always quick to answer emails and gave great feedback.
Professor Clifton was fantastic. This class used BioBeyond. If you didn't do well, it is all on you. She makes everything very clear and sends reminders. A great teacher that understands how to teach online.
This class was supposed to be for Biology non majors and it felt like a biology major class. There are hours and hours of unnecessary repetitive homework each week. The homework, quizzes, and tests have so many confusing questions, no makeups, and no retries. Each week, I probably spent an average time of 8-9 hours on all the required work due.
As has been said by some others, the exams were very difficult. There are often trick question scenarios that make you feel less like she wants you to learn the material and more like she is trying to weed people out of the program. This is by far the class I spend the most time on each week and probably the one I'm struggling in the most.
Does not cover the material on exams and pulls straight from the homework, but there is no context to the question it regards. She will not make any exceptions on grades or class.
Super easy class. Hardest thing about this class was remembering that even though the replies for the discussion posts were due on sunday but your post was 'due' on thursday. They had a word count but I don't think she checked. The weekly hw was occasionally time consuming but quizlet helped me out on the quizzes, tests, and even sometimes the hw.
Would not recommend Dr. Clifton. If someone asked a question she would act like it was such a hassle and embarrass anyone that did ask. She tries to weed people out of the biomed program by making the tests extremely hard and encouraging us to drop after we failed. The highest class average was a 70% and that speaks volumes on her as a professor.
Dr. Clifton is the worst teacher I have ever had. She is very disrespectful to anyone who doesn't understand a topic, and will often talk down on those who didn't do well on her exams. after the entire class bombed an exam (average was 62%) she talked down on the class to the one student who did well on that exam. Powerpoints are lacking as well
I hate this woman. The "PowerPoint" she uses is slim to nothing. You HAVE to read the textbook but none of the information you read is on the exam. She degrades students and tells them they are going to fail, class average stays at a solid 60%. she told my class a week ago after we all failed our exams that "she is not here to teach us"....
The teacher for my beginner class is not helpful and seems condescending to students who ask for help. She made it clear that she doesn't expect everyone to pass the class. I wouldn't recommend taking her course if you need extra support.
I took her class last semester and the only reason I did well was because of her TA's study classes. She will contradict herself constantly (as well as the text book), belittles students and honestly made me feel so odd I dreaded lectures. She needs to be removed from that course.
Please avoid her if you are not one of those students obsessed with biology.
Lectures and test do not really match up. Class was hard for good students. Would recommend finding a different professor if possible. If not know the PPTs really well and understand them. The tests are application of what. is in the PPT not just questions from what was on in. If you can go to the Bio sessions to help
Her lectures make little sense and she kinda goes all over the place. You'll be fine if you study the textbook though. She also gives extra credit on exams through bio success workshops.
My biggest complaint is she goes out of her way to trick you on tests. I understand the logic behind this decision, but its excessive. Most of your grade comes from those same tests.
Dr. Clifton gets a bad rep but she really is a good instructor. She cares about her students, and she's passionate about her work. Just because she's blunt and not the most welcoming person doesn't make her mean (in my opinion). The class is difficult, but I think bio is generally going to be tough, there's a lot of content to be learned.
There are homework assignments and extra credit opportunities each week but the exams are what make or break you. Since exams make up 75% of your grade they are crucial and since you have in total 4 of them it's easy to not pass this class. Memorization will only help you so much. Understanding and applying concepts is what you'll need to pass.
I took her once my freshman year in 2020 & once my senior year in 2024. Both classes w/ her were unbearable. She made it clear the first day of those classes that she had no knowledge/experience with the subjects & she did not know why the school was making her teach. In my senior year course, she said many times that she HATES teaching freshman.
Pretty tough course, overall grade is determined by exams.
Tough class to take, not the best at teaching which makes the course more difficult. Your exam grades are your overall class grade.
I found Dr. Clifton to be insensitive and even rude to students asking valid questions. Her class consists of her talking beside pictures and a PowerPoint for the entire time, she also requires you to purchase a clicker subscription to help her take attendance. She rarely interacts with students during the lessons, and it can be hard to follow.
She is just not a nice person. You can pass her class if you do the dynamic study modules but I found her attitude to be off-putting. She was mean to the one guy that answers her questions because he asked her to repeat something! Put in the work outside of lecture and you will do fine though.
She doesn't give you much to go off of, questions are hard and worded weird to throw you off. No lecture videos or anything you're expected to read and memorize.
She will never be at her office, and doesn't care about her students. If have any problems with the software good luck.
I understand a class is full of younger students will have some who don't try and therefore fail the class. However, if your entire class of 70+ students is doing poorly on exams, that reflects poorly on you. It's hard to be successful in a class when your professor sounds unconfident about the material and is rude to students who ask questions.
Probably the worst class I've ever taken she is the rudest teacher I've ever had. If you have any problems with the clicker, it's your fault . The most least understanding teacher, her exams are difficult and 70% of your grade.
This course was probably the toughest one I've had. I would not recommend asking questions during lecture, even if you don't understand, as you will be taken for a joke
If you ever try to ask her a question after lecture, god bless. She won't even look at you and will answer like your stupid. She didn't care about helping her students pass at all and was very rude. She purposefully makes her exams VERY difficult to pass. You're basically on your own the whole semester, she's no help at all.
Her make up exams are 100x harder than the original multiple choice exams. They are open response so have fun studying while you are sick. She still continues to lecture past the end of the class and does all of the participation questions there too, so try not to have another class right after hers. She truly has been my most difficult professor.
just don't...
Good luck to every soul stuck taking such a class with an unfortunate professor such as Dr. Clifton. If you believe in any sort of higher power, or think you might, pick a random one of your choosing, and hope they will take pity on you and open another section of this class with a different professor.
DO NOT. SAVE YOURSELF.
I personally don't understand why people don't like her! I found her classes very easy as long as you take notes during the lectures. The mastering biology assignments are very helpful, especially if you go back to them to study!! Literally just pay attention and take notes, and you'll do decent.
The four exams you take in class are the majority of your grade. She is a good lecturer, just don't ask questions. She expects you to spend 12 HOURS A WEEK on just her class, which is absolutely ridiculous. She is also not fond of non-science majors taking her course (even though it is gen ed). Overall, go for a different bio professor if you can.
She is one of the worst teachers. If you can't get another teacher just wait until the next semester. She is condescending and don't act like she gets paid to tech but to just read off of slides. I am not sure how she is still teaching at this school but stay away if you want to pass. Sincerely, someone who dropped out and passed the same class
