Gives a lot of homework but really cares about her students. This is the first time I've ever really understood a math class!
I see her passion for teaching each day. She is a wonderful teacher and really helping the students grow in this term. She is an excellent teacher! In the future I'll always recall the good things which she had taught me. I enjoyed her class very much.
Course should have been out of 500pts and only gave 400pts. Teacher was very lazy. All points where from exams only and few homework assignments. Teacher does not help with preparing for exams. Over half of the class ended up failing her class. Horrible teacher, do not take her unless you are planning on re-taking MTH95.
Horrible teacher!! Do not take her if you can help it.
Going into this class I was repeatedly warned about her teaching skills. However I never really got to see her teaching skills, as she would regularly come in late, write a problem on the board with no question (funny stuff) and sit and do her grading for 20 min. At the end of the class period, she would often remark there is just not enough time
Worst teacher ever. She gives out 3+ hours of homework for each class time and exams are worth 90% of your grade. She doesn't explains things clearly and goes way too fast. No reviews before exams either so you have no idea what she will be testing on. Do not take her!
This class made me question my major. I went into her class hoping that all the negative things I heard about her were false. They were not. She gave a ton of homework. Rarely actually taught anything and spent a whole class session on ONE question. The tests were impossible and so was she. She has seniority at MHCC. She should not be teaching mth.
She makes herself available to students who need extra help. Goes over problems until the student gets it right.
Nice, polite, and understandable
As a lot of people have said already, she spends all class on one homework question and her tests do not make any sense, does not tell what type of notes are allowed and really horrible with helping on exam review. Tests are NOTHING like the homework. Not taking her again.
Kari is a GREAT TEACHER. She understands the material well, and is always willing to help students beyond the scope of most teachers. All she request is that you be an adult and be responsible for your homework. I found all of her test to be reflections of the course material.
Very strait forward. Probably explains why she got derogatory marks on here. She is very helpful and will explain anything to anyone as many times as time allows. Great teacher! This prof expects students to act like adults. She is funny and charming and if I could take my next math class with her I most certainly would.
I really enjoyed having her as a teacher. She was very helpful if you asked an questions.
Great teacher, I hated math and could never understand it until I had Rothi as a teacher. She was very helpful, and an awesome teacher to have in a math class
She gives multiple hour homework assignments that take twelve or more pages for a whopping eight points and didn't help on the exam at all. In class she'll often screw up and not even notice. She gives homework that she doesn't teach us how to do until after it's due.
Very friendly and helpful. She will go over stuff until you get it and is available during daily office hours. I was very reluctant about taking this course, but was soon very relieved at how easy she made it.
Worst teacher I had so far at MHCC. She never goes over what we need to learn for the homework. If i pass this class it would be a miracle.
This is probably the most frustrated i've ever been in a math class. She does not explain any of the problems she gives us and she puts things that she has not even taught us on the tests. If you are a hands on learner then I do not recommend her.
Definitely the worst teacher I have had at MHCC, she does not teach anything that will be on the homework she assigns, and her tests are nothing like the hrs of homework she assigns. Do not take her!
Worst math teacher I have had at Mt. Hood. When more than half the class fails the tests, she does nothing about it and offers no other option. Puts questions on tests she has not even taught us. Approaches the class as if her primary goal is to prepare us for calculus, when most of us just need to get through THIS class.
Worst teacher I have had at MHCC hands down. She mostly assigned homework from Wiley and half of the time couldn't even get her answers to check, her tests had things included that had absolutely nothing involving what he had learned and she was rude in the way she would address her students.
Not good. Tons of homework 3+ hours for every other day, no break for 2 hour class, holds you over most of the time. Unrealistic expectations. She is very vague when you ask for help on certain problems. She gets detailed on obvious stuff and vague on harder or more confusing things. She gets answers wrong a lot confusing you further. DO NOT TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE. Upon Taking this class I have found right away that this wasn't going to be a easy class. First day of class 3 hours of homework assigned. No enthusiasm, lack of empathy for the students and most of all BORING! Steer clear of this one
Kari teaches well. Good about answering questions.
The homework is not bad. Gives you a week to do them. If you miss anything DO NOT email her. She will not respond! I emailed her 4 times this term and she didn't respond to any of them. You will have to see her during her very little office hours.
I'm very upset with this class, the teacher explains things but dosent elaborate on why they have to be don't specifically and uses to many math terms to describe things that would otherwise be understood if she broke them down. I feel like a moron because I don't understand and can't pinpoint where she lost me on subjects.
Worst teacher ever! i'll give it to her she knows her math, but as a teacher. By the end of the term half of the class was gone. She has a very monotone voice, doesn't give brakes and her tests can be put in a way that you wont understand what she is asking of you. Don't take her unless you breathe with math.
Rothi was undoubtedly the worst professor I've had the misfortune of dealing with in the last two and half years of college. Don't bother asking questions unless you want to be embarrassed in front of the class. Very unclear. Won't elaborate on any questions to understanding material. 4.0 student in the math before this, with Rothi, I had to drop.
Confusing. Does break things down, but doesn't always elaborate. Very little office hours, but is willing to help when you ask for it. Friendly and encoraging. Very possible to pass if you work really hard.
Good instructor. Lots of homework. Talks in a monotone, but if you follow her instructions, you can pass. Lots of office hours, more than any math instructor on campus!! Very fair in grading, if she sees you trying, know that you'll recieve a couple points on that problem, even if it's wrong.
Tests are really hard. Homework is endless, be ready to do lots of homework. Lots of office hours, very encouraging and helpful.
Kari really tries to help her students, but does not have good teaching styles. First test we took had nothing to do with the homework that was assigned and 80% of class failed, had to curve the test. She also has a hard time explaining things to students and had confusing explanations. Lots of homework! Wouldn't take her again or recommend.
I have always had to work hard in math. I got an A in math 60, but I got a D in 65. She is confusing and it is unclear what she is doing. I have to retake this class because I cannot get into some of my other casses without a C or better in math 65... A lot of homework and it is very boring in her class. She is nice however.
If you want to fail math take any of her classes. She tries very hard to help you fail. Her quizzes and exams have nothing to do with what you learned during class and homework. She tells you study one thing for quiz and then gives you absolutely different things. She does a lot of mistakes herself explaining it that she is tired.
Kari is not good in explaining things and I agree what other people say her tests, which makes 60% of grade, are tricky and only a couple of question there are related to what we learned in class. She never responds back if you email her. I was under impression that she wants you to get bad grade. I do not mind a lot of homework.
Do good on the first quiz. She grades really hard and you need to use the right words in your answers
Alright, so Kari is a great nice person. BUT her teaching style is not for everyone! She usually takes up more classes then she can handle causing her to never have time to print out our work pages, grade our work, or even have our quizzes ready to take! She literally wrote the quiz on the overhead from the top of her head at the beginning of class
Her lectures are real repetitive but she's fun and positive!
Wonderful Professor, I am currently earning an A. I have attending every class and do all the homework.
She talks a lot about the same topic, but other than tangents and running on, Kari does a really good job of making sure her teaching is thorough!
She was by far my best teacher of the term, so caring and kind and understanding. Took the time and energy out of her day, her lectures, after class, to help me any way she could. She was a real sweet person who wanted everyone to succeed and is willing to go above and beyond for any of her students. She wants you to work hard and succeed and helps
Four students (FOUR out of THIRTY) passed the second exam in her ME95 class, and she refused to give chances to retake test sections, correct parts for half-credit, and she didn't even curve the scores like other ME95 teachers did when their classes bombed an exam. A majority of her students were failing by the end of the term.
She is very nice, but her teaching style not for everyone. she can be vague on most topics. I recall having to spend a lot of time with the tutors in order to understand the topics. My advice, if you are not very good at math, this teacher is not for you.
Kari is a really nice person to talk to outside class and her lectures are decent. However, she assigns too much homework. And this is coming from a math major. The truth is she assigns so much homework that math becomes boring for me. In MTH261, you do a lot of proofs but she'll make you do about 5 proofs per HW + about 10 extra textbook questions
Grades daily homework, acts like she hates her job, lots of sighing and eye rolling when questions are asked. Attendance is graded 3.33 percent of final grade per class session. Never seems to be able to finish the materials before class end. Worst math teacher ive had by far.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had
Kari is kind of funny, usually cheerful and is happy to help you when youre stuck on something. She does assign a lot of homework, but honestly I dont think I wouldve passed without it. This class is a hard class. She always tells you exactly what to study and what will be on the non-calculator part of the test. People who skip dont do well.
I was able to learn a lot from Kari's class, but as I have come to understand, I was one of a very small handful of people to pass her Math 95 class. I don't have any criticism of her teaching style, but I believe MHCC trying to cram so much information into one course may not be the best course of action for most students.
Kari is an awesome teacher that actually cares about the course and the students. The plain truth is that you just have to put in the work to do well. I found her class refreshing and fun.
She is definitely the best math teacher I have taken at MHCC (out of the total of four math classes I've had to take). She is the only math teacher I've had that had a generally nice vibe. Did have boring lectures and a lot of homework, but as long as you do most of the work and take all the extra credit opportunities, you should pass no problem.
I have noticed a lot of students complain about her but taking her Math261 class, all of those comments from before have been completely thrown out the window. She is extremely caring, fun, and gives a lot of extra credit. If you do the homework, youll do really well on the exams and she even gives a packet of notes for the exam. She is amazing!
Terrible teacher, is all over the place never sticks too one topic, godly amounts of homework every night without even properly teaching you how to do it, never will take her again!
Takes forever to teach any new concepts. Havent learned anything this term.
She's pretty "chill" I guess you could say, but a horrible teacher. Has you buy packet, then just tells you to "try" the problem. After she realizes no one has any idea what they're doing she proceeds to 'explain' it. Her explanations aren't very good, she basically expects you to know exactly what you're doing before she even explains.
She waits till class is over to figure out what the homework for tonight will be. Not worth it you will not learn anything
The worst math professor in the whole program. Its been two classes and I already want to end myself. She talks so much and her teaching style is wack. Shes super unorganized and if you miss 3 classes, you can no longer get an A. I did not intentionally sign up for her. Do yourself a favor and dont register for her. Theres so many other options
An awful professor who is also very lazy. She doesnt really teach the material but instead tells you to figure it out and cannot explain for her life. Dont take rothi if you actually want to learn.
The class leaves with more questions than answers. Its hard to understand the concepts because she doesnt really explain then and just expects you to understand them.
Does not prepare you for the tests, she will talk for the majority of the class on things that are not even relevant to the class, and then will sit down while you work on a difficult packet that is more advanced than what she taught you. You will work on the packet for the rest of the class until she interrupts two minutes before it ends to help.
This is my second term with Miss Rothi and for the first time in my math career I am learning and understanding math! Anytime I don't understand anything and have questions she finds ways to help me better understand. I would have had an exceptional time in her class had the other students been more respectful and quiet during lectures.
Kari Rothi makes straight A students quake with fear and drop like flies. She does minimal effort to make her class engaging and even relevant for that matter. Her sassy comments and tough grading scale are very unnecessary. Beware because her class and homework expectations are extremely unclear. This is a warning to all.
Shes alright depends on how you learn.
about of an hour of homework after every class she explains stuff pretty good, didnt really need to go to the tutor center for anything
Kari is an amazing professor. She is very patient with her students. She teaches the basics of your homework before she assigns it, and it is your job to pay attention and take notes so you can accurately do the homework. If you do your homework correctly, you can definitely pass with an A. She also corrects homework. She explains things very well.
I am in utter shock and dismay after the horrific events that occurred from January-March 2019. This class was absolutely horrendous. Where do I even start? She gives TONS of homework every single week. She even assigns it right after TESTS! Her tests are always the MAXIMUM level of difficulty. Please please please avoid this class if youwanttoLIVE
Very nice, caring and funny. Shes easy going, chill, and very open minded to any questions you have. Youll definitely understand the homework easily if you just pay attention in class. Its College after all. She does give out a lot of homework but the good thing is, she gives you enough time to work on it before its due. Would take her again!
Well, come the final, half the class is failing, and Kari made a whole spreadsheet about it, while instead, she could be using her time to try and make her students be successful in the class. Yes of course some of the students are failing because they are slacking, but, if half the class is failing, maybe the teacher could do something different
i dont even know where to start. if youre reading this. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. for me she was the only option left so i was like why not? and i wholeheartedly regret it. trust me, if shes your only option, just wait till next term to take this class. its not worth it unless youre a complete math wizard god. shes the worst teacher i have ever had.
More than half the class had Ds. That means theres something wrong with the way the instructor is teaching!
Really a horrible teacher had to drop math 112 from winter term. This class she doesn't know the material at all and student ask her if she supposed to follow the math formula in the text book and then she get mad and yells as the student. Really a rude instructor and bad at teacher math course. Please avoid taking this instructor for math.
What you do in class is she assigns a page from the packet, gives you wayyy too much time to do it, goes over it with everyone, and repeat. Homework is completion based, and she allows note cards for exams. Easy, but mind numbingly boring.
She is a super neat lady, and as long as you are willing to put the effort and time into your work you will definitely do well.
Really a horrible instructor for math 95 and higher. She does not know the materials for any of this math class. Really rude in class and yells at students when she made the mistakes. Her office hours are really late and when students goes to her office hours for help. She sleeps in her office hours and yells at students for no reason for material.
I don't even know where to begin. She thinks she's a Messiah of math and don't even know ho to teach and gives too much homework to and its about 250 math problems per week. Please don't take her any math classes NO EVEN JOKING.
Assigns homework and goes over one little thing and proceeds to talk about it the entire class. I've had to miss a couple classes due to death in my family and she got annoyed with me. I tried emailing her three times and she never read or responded. I even showed up to her office hours and she wasn't there. Safe to say I'm nervous about passing.
After reading some of Kari's reviews on RMP I was slightly hesitant to take her class, but she was an awesome teacher. She was super caring, took time to explain the concept until we all understood, and made her lectures interactive. I have no complaints from taking her class. She is a solid choice for a math teacher!
absolute the worst teacher ever. Did not care about anything. It was hard to follow during the lecture. She made learning math so much harder then it was supposed to be.
I do not know where to began because this teachers thinks shes a math god but she really is not good at teaching math at all. She gives you more than 100 math problems per week for homework where like other math teachers I had taken pass gives less than 60 math homework problems. Really a rude teacher that sleeps and can't teach.

If you have a choice to not take this professor, don't. She seems like genuine human but not a great professor. Never replies to emails!! so good luck! Iv'e sent over 50 emails and heard twice back, and only because I asked her to check during zoom. I don't understand her lectures and she does not record them so if you miss class, good luck!
The WORST professor I have ever had. I would give her a 0 if it was an option. Some of the questions on the exam we haven't even covered yet. Homework is online, and we only get 3 tries for each problem. Doesn't give extra credit, a tough grader, and never answers emails. Please just DON'T take this class if you want a good grade.
I took this class expecting math to suck, math sucked but the teacher is definitely nice and when had questions about the lecture or HW during class she would explain things a little better so that was good. The bad began when she would forget to post the homework and the work stacks up, and you fall behind. She doesn't answer her emails.
I liked the way she taught math, it was easy to understand. Kari is a caring teacher, she accepted all late work and gave students a chance to re-take missed tests and quizzes. She assigns a lot of homework.. too much actually. Attendance matters, so are sure to attend all the scheduled zoom classes if you're taking her class online.
Kari does her best with the new online model, but math on blackboard needs a complete overhaul. Wiley and the e-textbook are worthless. Get tutoring and use youtube/khanacademy/whatever. The homework reviews overlap the current lessons in a way that doesn't work. Needs a TA to help her with e-mails. Can only contact her in zoom class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Even if its your last option, just don't!! She never answers emails! I emailed her countless times and was only able to meet with her once the whole semester. It got so bad to the point that I had to email the dean of mathematics but even that did not help. So please save your money and your time by not taking Kari's class.
I am an older student. This class was an amazing extension of high school math. If you didn't quite understand then. Ms. Rothi will give you teaching aids to understand now. Ms. Rothi does admit she won't respond to emails, HOWEVER, she is always willing to stay after class. Homework is due each night, the class is fast-paced, don't miss a class.
Please do not take Kari, pick any other teacher. Kari knows her stuff regarding the math but will never respond to emails. I emailed her 5 times during the term and she only responded twice. She will put problems on the homework that we didn't even cover and she will tell you what will be on the test 10 minutes before it starts. Stay away from her!
Kari is very nice but does not care about your personal success. She will not record her zoom calls if she's asked, and also DOES NOT REPLY TO EMAILS. She knows what shes talking about in terms of math but shes extremely long winded. Also so much homework.
Kari never responded to my emails and held us over the time the class was supposed to end. People would have to leave due to child care or work because she held them over the class time . She is super nice but she does NOT ever respond in emails and goes off on her own thing for 30+ minutes during class time.
Can be cool sometimes, but is one of those teachers that sort of "does math at you" rather than giving actual lectures. Also spends a good chunk of class time answering questions about homework instead of teaching the material so she ends up behind schedule. Homework is usually online and Wiley can be really picky about the answers. Overall 2/5.
Participation matters, graded on attendance. Has a 1 hour class 5 days a week, assigns homework every weekday and on weekends. She is very unrealistic about homework. If you want to have a life outside of school this term, then I would highly advise you do not register this course.
A pretty good teacher who gives a pretty decent chunk of homework but gives you plenty of time to do it in time so you just guide your own path here. Exams and Quiz are a huge part but she allows students to bring a piece of paper or notecard. would take it again if I could.
This was actually a great maths class. She replies to emails on time, her explanations are simple, and her class was very practical. If you don't pay attention, don't expect to do well.
She's very nice but so much homework, and she doesn't read through it all so I didn't know what I was doing wrong. SHE DOES NOT REPLY TO EMAILS. I didn't learn much from her, I learned more from YouTube. She spends over half of the class going over homework questions, which can be helpful but hardly got to learn the things we needed for exams.
I took Math111 with Kari in 2022 and I gotta say, she's a great professor if you pay attention and ask the right questions. She a pretty straight forward person and she will tell you the truth, instead of beating around the bush, which I respected. Overall great math professor, made the learning process easy.
She was rarely in her office. Her grading was good though. BUT she gave a TON of homework, more than your average Algebra class. And if you didn't do the homework, your grade dropped significantly. Kari often went on rabbit trails during class. Because of this, we had to cram many lessons during week 10.
Prof Kari is pretty straightforward - if you stay engaged and ask questions, you'll do well. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the textbook.
She was a okay instructor. But was always late to class. Never graded homework until the last week. Didn't take student seriously. I would not recommend this course for anyone that needs to be out of class by a certain time she she will hold you over class.
I had Kari for Math 10, I learned lots of things in that class. But, her math 20 class was a complete switch. There was an extreme amount of homework, self printing, in return costed me lots of money in ink/paper. She's always late, doesn't take you seriously, grades in ridiculous ways, and favorites students. I didn't learn much & overly stressed.
Kari Rothi has an amazing personality and is down to earth. You'll love that about this class. However, the only downside is that you'll be drowning in homework, especially if you're taking other classes.
