Great teacher
She's a really good lecturer. There are a few short papers to write and the final and midterm are essay. She's a really interesting teacher. Go to the Logic Lab in room 231 of the Faculty Office Bldg for good tutoring 11 to 5, M-R.
She is a good teacher. All she does is lecture but she's not that boring. Essays are easy because i did them in 2 hours and my worst grade was a B. Tests are easy if you study. I'm a 2nd year student and I got my first A in this class.
great teacher! interesting lectures-- allows open debates. easy short essay tests-- finished 4 essays for the final in less than 1 hour... highly recommended!
Okay lectures. Not always willing to answer every question in full detail. Does not create a clear picture of lecture material.
She is a great lecturer, very passionate about the subj. i recommend her over other phil professors like Lott. Come to class and take notes bec midterms and papers are based on it and u won't understand the reading.
Great Teacher.Very clear on the material...Always organized...Only two essay assignments and two exams in the class.Dont worry if you mess up on either essays she will always give you an oppourtunity to re-write them for a better grade.
Lectures arent too bad, assignments are pretty easy. Tests are pretty easy. You should get an A if you complete everything. Always in a good mood...hard to find ppl like that. RECOMMENDED
This class is easy. I didnt bother reading some of the readings. Just go to class+ take notes. A few short papers to write. MT+final were all essays. Has TA's grading the paper, so they wont give u the same grade as she would.just go see her about it.
not hard: discusses reading assigned night before so i didn't really read much, short writing assignments, essay midterms...she's really nice, answers all questions, encourages discussion, understanding, very peppy and passionate about subject
easy!! 500 word papers(3). Makes concepts interesting/relates it to our lives...very passionate and encouraging..likes discussion so don't be afraid to speak in class (she won't make you feel dumb whatever questions/comments you have)
one of the nicest teachers i ever had! dont really have to read anything cause she reads em and explains the concept for ya:) Just make sure you go to the class everyday. she also let you rewrite one paper too if you mess up. shes Highly recommanded!!!
She's really nice. She really tries to make her students understand philosophy. Basically learn about the major philosophers, their theories, and compare and contrast them. Lectures could get boring b/c all talk. Few essays, and short essays for tests
Brown: very nice, easy class just as long as you go, overall Brown is a great teacher.
The nicest person in the world. She is very helpful; her exams reflect exactly what she goes over in class; she will never trick you with her questions; she just wants you to succeed.
She's very energetic during lectures, so it's hard to fall asleep. She must be the nicest teacher in SJSU. Only 3 short essays in her class, but not very hard. 1 midterm, 1 final... and it's all based on lectures. If you come to class, you'll be fine.
Kind and eager to teach. Focuses more on the concepts than remembering names, terms, and dates. Would suggest that you be able to write decent papers with thesis and structure. 3 essay, 1 mid, 1 final. the reading is all excellent.
The BEST teacher ever!!!
She's incredibly nice. You can ask or answer any question even if you aren't sure of yourself because she doesn't tell people they're wrong. The reading is very interesting and the class helps you to learn a lot about yourself and about humanity.
She is an amazing professor. Probably one of the best I've had at SJSU. You will learn a great deal and never feel stupid in the process.
She is such a sweet lady. She is very nice and is always willing to help her students. All tests are essays questions. They are easy though. Just listen to her lecture and look over the topics in your book before the tests. There is two essays to do and readings for homework are short. SHe loves what she teaches and shes good at it too.
Prof. Brown is the most approachable and easiest teacher that i have taken yet. She goes over each reading assignment in detail the day it is fdue... no quizzes, just 3 papers and a midterm and a final... i never read, i only studied from my notes and i got a B+. Cool ass lady, very down to earth, i definatly recomend taking her...
She is very clear and makes you want to come to class. While i found myself avoiding the rest of my classes even when i was sick i went to professor browns class because it was very interesting and thought provoking.
if you are not into philosophy it can be boring at times, however, she is an awesome teacher. glad to experience her class.
very easy class. She is very dedicated to teaching her students. just read the books and go to class and u'll do fine!!!
I MUST ADMIT SHE IS THE COOLEST PHILOSOPHY TEACHER EVER. VERY NICE AND EASY AND ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP YOU. SHE NEVER PICKS ON THE STUDENTS AND IS ALWAYS FULL OF ENERGY. I LOVE HER CLASS :) THANKS PROF BROWN.
She is definitely one of the best professors out there. I would love to have her again. She's very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and she has the best personality! Class discussions are very interesting and it's impossible to get less than a B in this class; she's a VERY easy grader. I LOVE HER!
she's just too cool!!! very fun teacher
She's an exceptional professor. Very friendly, nice, and helpful. I really enjoyed the readings. She made every lecture fun.
She is an excellent professor. She's straightforward, knows her material and even tells you whats going to be on the test. There are 3 papers for this class but they are only 2 pages each. Take good notes and you wont even have to read the book. However, she talks kind of fast. Overall, this teacher is exceptional. Ended with an A.

Brown is a cool professor. She teaches because she is passionate about philosophy. I like philisophy ,due to personal resons, but she made me want to learn even more. The exams are not difficult because she gives you everything you need during the lectures. So, come to the lecture and you'll get an A, don't expect an A+!
Prof. Brown is very helpful, nice and kind. She knows her material well. Her class was always fun.
This class is way out there for me
Kind of ditzy, but very smart and knowledgeable about her subject. The reading material was a little difficult at times, but Prof. Brown lectures really helped with my understanding. Recommended.
professor knows her stuff. requires the class to participate, but nobody does (lack of interest from class?). mostly reading. 2 papers. 1 midterm. 1 final. all easy. just show up to class to listen/take notes because she summarizes chapters from books, and she literally gives you answers to the midterm/final (which all are essay-basd formats). EASY
She is a great professor and wants to help her students do well. She thoroughly explains all of the assigned readings and explains exactly what will be on the exams. She's always willing to review anything that students are having trouble understanding. The papers are short, and Professor Brown is a very fair grader.
She inspired me to minor in philosophy. Even if you don't always read, you can get a lot out of this class if you come to lecture, pay attention, and stay open-minded. This class gave me a new perspective on life and several lectures remained in my head long after class was over. Reading can be mind-boggling at times though so be prepared.
i loved this class. It has inspired me to really think about situations. it has changed my life for the better. I highly recommend this teacher for all students. She knows what she is talking about. What can be more important than philosophy.
Professor Brown is awesome! She teaches well (you will learn a lot) and she is a generous grader. If you think you might be interested in taking a course with her, you should; she will make the material interesting.
She tries to make the boring class materials seem interesting. Very EZ class. 2 in-class exams and 2 essays - 25% each. If you're not satisfied with your letter grade for your exam or essay, you can resubmit for a higher grade. What more can you ask for. Be prepared to listen and take notes on the boring stuff if ur planning not to read the book.
This class is SOOOO boring but it's easy if you do exactly what she wants. Take good notes. If you write exactly what she says during the tests or somewhere around that ballpark you'll do good. You can't bull**** some of the answers on the tests (I've tried hahaha, not a good idea). She let me redo my midterm and essays. Really nice and lenient.
I love Dr. Brown. She is sweet, compassionate, patient, helpful, passionate in teaching, and of course "non-violent" as Ghandhi. See her eyes, and you will know how great she is as a teacher. I love the class and I love the teacher+++++++++ The grading to her is beyond my description. (Only by awakening, you will know the ultimate truth!!)
Prof. Brown makes her lecture easy to understand, and she always smiles, grades fairly, and is willing to help us. Highly recommend this instructor to you. Be early, get your seat.
I think my paper deserved a better grade. I know pretty well what is a thesis and how to write an A paper.
EXTREMELY nice & compassionate teacher. she loves her students and loves what she teaches. sometimes lectures are boring but sometimes its interesting. she grades fairly, it's very possible to get A's on all/most the papers/midterms. esp if you use a lot of examples that were talked about in class.
she is soooo nice! her class is boring and interesting all at the same time. she really wants her students to do well and does everything that she can to make it happen. she is such a great teacher!
Great teacher! probably one of the BEST at SJSU! you are lucky if you get her, not only will you learn a lot, but she will teach you compassion and how to live a better life! i really loved this class!
She is the NICEST teacher EVER! It makes me sick that people would take advantage of her trust in students and cheat on her super EASY tests. Great professor. If you go to her lectures, you don't need the book. 2 SHORT papers = 30% each. 1 Midterm, 1 Final, 20% each. Learn a lot and get an A. No laptops allowed =(
Awesome teacher. Just pay close attention to lecture and take notes and you will do great on the tests! Never opened the book. Goodluck!
Excellent lecturer, information has purpose and is great learning, IF you read material keep your opinion separate from her notes, ONLY she can decipher philosophers intent, must show her your drafts and run Mid/Final study notes by her for accuracy. Overall, it was a pleasure to learn from her wealth of knowledge on/off subject.
Sweet lady! She made Philosophy so much funny and she also made philosophy easy to understand. A lot of reading. The midterm and the final are based on what you read from the textbook and the lectures. Kinda important to go to most of the lectures. The midterm and finals are essay based and there are two easy writing assignments.
The material is boring. Take notes on the lecture if you don't do the reading. But bring your book and highlight what she mentions. Her study guides are a big help. Class participation is a big help if you want a good grade. Ask questions, and answer hers. Great teacher!
Bottom line, she is a nice professor and her lectures are absolutely necessary so you must attend or the material will make no sense. Everything focuses on the study guide and there are 3 essays and 2 tests. Basically, Phil 10 is like a writing class. Not an easy A if your lazy but if you do your work and fill out the study guide, you'll be good
Basically a writing class, your whole grade is dependent on your essays/midterm/final. Lectures are helpful for midterm/final. Midterm/final have questions taken straight from the study guide.
She is straight up hippie. like everyone else said your grade is based off the essays. you dont need to read the book, just go to lectures and take notes. those notes are essential for writing the essays. she is really nice, but expects alot from students who are just taking the class for a GE.
I loved her! She has a great sense of humor and relates everything to real life. She answers questions clearly and everything she does is straight forward. It's not hard at all, your only homework is to read and she doesn't even care what format your essay's in or anything. Very easygoing and nice. I highly reccommend her, it's hard to fail!
Easily one of the nicest and easiest teachers I have ever had. I guess reading the book isn't mandatory to get a good grade in the class (cuz i never read) but attendance is an absolute must. She will give you the key points you will want to include in essays and tests. Take advantage of it!
I love her class! I generally don't like Philosophy, but her class made me love it. She is a great teacher and has a great sense of humor. Her class is easy as long as you take good notes and go to class everyday. I would definitely recommend taking her class.
Professor Brown is very enthusiastic and helpful toward her students. I totally recommend her. Although she goes over everything in class, you still need to get the textbook in order to do your essays. Prof. Brown is very approachable when you need help, but you still need to work VERY HARD to get an A.
Pretty good class overall. Can be boring sometimes, especially in DMH. Grades are based on 2 essays and the midterm/final (another 2 in class essays). If you show up regularly, she will raise your grade by 5%. You do not really need the book. I never bought it, and got B's on the essays, and A's on the tests.
I couldn't stand this class. The teacher is sweet but the lectures were very boring. It was hard to stay awake. The papers were easy and for the final, she let us use any notes or books (so of course I brought the Idiots Guide to Phil.). Don't get the book. She wants you to read it but it wasn't that helpful.
For a GE class, she expects a little too much. I skipped a couple lectures and the ones I went to were very bland. She knows her stuff very well, but like I said, she expects a lot for just a GE class. Grade is based off midterm, final, and 2 essays. If you can pay attention I guess you'll do fine.
Overall this was a class I was dreading.. Prof Brown actually made it enjoyable. I felt guilty for not attending class regularly purely based upon how nice she was. Take this class if you want a easy grade while still learn a lot of interesting fun and life changing things :)
Easy teacher!! Take her if you want an A. She's is extremely nice, but philosophy is not my thing. You do not need to show up to class and her tests are open notes. She is very passionate and is more than happy to explain what you are confused about.
She is an absolutely amazing teacher. Funny, extremely clear, and extremely compassionate towards her students. She tries to make sure everyone stays interested and that they understand what we are reading, no matter how convoluted the text is. I'm taking Existentialism and Phenomenology with her now, and I look forward to it! :)
Pretty mediocre class. The professor was ok, the text was ok, the only drawback was that the lectures were very uninteresting, and she seems like a nice person but not very interesting at all. Mediocre
Very fun teacher. Tons of energy. Every lecture was interesting and funny at times. Didn't buy the book, just took notes and got an A- Great teacher/class
She's so full of energy and so funny! She cares about all her students and is very approachable. One of the nicest professors I've had at SJSU so far, and she doesn't grade too harshly either. I strongly recommend her!
Super friendly professor who cares about her students. The time the class is boring is when people dont participate during the lectures. There was no actual hw except readings and 2 writing assignments throughout the semester. Not to mention she gave TAKE HOME MIDTERMS AND FINALS.
Love, love, love her. So cute and bubbly and energetic. Keeps things interesting, easy to take notes from. Will listen to students and answer every question. Also has funny anecdotes. Two 2pg papers & take home tests. I'd love to take her for another class! Bonus: she has a really cute European (?) accent.
The class is not difficult, few papers to write, and take home midterms and finals. Just be prepare to participate in class because you're better off speaking in class then not. Overall, she's very nice, witty and helpful.
Karin Brown is hands-down, the best professor I've had so far. She's funny and makes lecture very discussion-oriented. If you are opinionated, assertive and enjoy convincing your ideas unto others, you will love this class. Just be prepared to support any claims you make about discussion topics.
VERY easy. No need to attend. 2 essays of 2 pages double spaced each. 1 take home midterm assigned more than a week in advanced. 1 take home final assigned more than a week in advanced. Impossible to get below a B unless you dont put effort in these LITTLE assignments. Attendance is extra credit at times.
Very informative class, definitely a good choice on the uncostly book. For sure it got me to open my thoughts, do some critical thinking. It is easy though only because she covers her material in class so it would be a good idea to attend.
Easy A! Hard to understand with her accent but shes so sweet and wants the best for her students!
Karin Brown is a wonderful professor. I came into this class not interesting in philosophy, but the way she teaches will make anyone want to become a philosophy major. She has a high pitched voice as she gets more intense with her lecture, which can get annoying at times. If she's available during registration, TAKE HER. EASY A.
Just like everyone said, easy A! Very sweet and fun to talk to. She makes you more open-minded and gives you advice on how to be a better person. (:
One of my favorite professors while here at state. Class is based on readings, so if you read and go to class you should get an A. Easy class but Professor Brown really makes you think.
I had her for Moral Issues and the class was kind of boring. There was not really any direct text readings and the textbook was heavily biased and bland. Professor Brown cared about her student learning but her lectures were biased and sometimes misinformed. If you want a leftist liberal professor that will agree with you, she's the one to take.
She cares about her students grades and will always listen to your concerns for you to succeed. Theres at home reading before classes but she covers it in her lectures. She doesnt tell you when the quizzes are but just come to class prepared. She drops your worst score quiz too. Theres 2 easy-graded writings, a 1 question midterm, and a final.
Easy A if you attend lectures and take notes. No extra homework besides assigned readings, which she goes over in class. She provides clear understanding of the reading material and provides you with all the information needed to ace the exams. Grade is based on five exams, no other assignments. Very nice, very flexible, and very understanding.
She's a super sweet teacher who really cares about what she's teaching. Also, the text might seem long and difficult to read at times, but she does a really thorough job of explaining and interpreting the text. There are five big tests for each unit, and how she grades is a little unclear but she goes overall pretty easy on grading them.
One of the best professors I had so far. This class consists of 5 exams ad they are all based on the readings she give us. Very kind and open minded and is willing to help you bring up your grade. Material is easy to understand especially with all of the quotes or real life examples she gives us. You can always go back to lec vids.
During this semester, I had her online. She has five exams with questions based on the reading . She is very passionate about the subject and knows what she is talking about. She explains the readings clearly and ties into the real world. I highly recommend taking her class.
She's passionate about the subject so it was easy to learn, cares about you and what's you to do your best. Always started on time and ended at a reasonable time. the readings are all pdfs on canvas. The "quiz" was just answering questions based of the reading. if you go to the lectures and pay attention you'll pass.
Sweet and kind. Empathetic and understanding. No midterm or finals. Your grade is based on exams, which are based on readings. I barely read them cause they were long and confusing. But I went to all her lectures, which really helped. She explains the readings in detail so I recommend you go to lectures and take good notes.
I am a little biased as a phil major, but I loved this class. Only graded off exams, and she is a hard grader. Make sure you know the material and explain it well enough on your exams. As long as you read the material and understand it, it is very easy to get an A. If you are happy with your grade, you don't have to take the final. Good professor!
Really passionate professor who knows the content of the class well. The textbook is assigned but was able to find it free online. 5 short exams, the lowest one dropped, final included. Overall interesting class if Buddhism or Daoism interests you. Graded on minimal assignments so lock in for the exams.
Professor Brown is a great instructor. Class is divided into 4/5 exams, that are medium question, open note and partially mirror material from the textbook so you could get a good grade if you miss one of her lectures (go to them, they are interesting and participation is not mandatory, and may reward you). She makes philosophy fun to learn about.
Incredibly sweet and understanding professor. She is passionate about what she does and loves teaching.
I enrolled because of all the good ratings on here & now it makes sense! Excellent lecturer, clearly passionate about what she teaches and frequently took the time to dissect thoughts and questions from students. She always gave my class a 5 minute break in the middle of the period & was available to talk everyday after lecture, would so recommend!
She's extremely nice and caring like she would support her students in ability. Some group discussions but mainly class discussion (pls attend because this is where you get your materials). For my class, we had 4 quizzes, and 2 writing exams (prob 2 FRQ prompts, 300 words count or not really matter). Need books but will be provided!
Lectures are okay, too hard to get an A. She believes an B is okay like grad school isnt an option for people. Take some other easy GE this one is not worth the struggle. Other reviews are from duing covid shes way harder in person.
Easy class, easy material, easy tests. Lost points because I never showed up to class so I wasn't present for the in-class assignments she has. Would have an A+ if the classwork category didn't count.
She is an amazing professors. Passionate about teaching and engages the class in great discussions. I would highly recommend her class! It was one of my favorites! Her class is not difficult if you show up for the lectures.
Uses lockdown browser, saying this because my computer kinda broke(but I fixed it) because of it. I rated 3 because I feel like even if you understand the content you'll get a B, although she did seem to answer any question you had and I met her out of class on zoom a bit. A B isn't a bad grade but would prefer a better one for understanding it
A very easy GE class with no HW. You get 4 quizzes and 3 essay exams in class. Just attend her lectures and review her slides, you will get an easy A. Plus, she is a very kind and passionate lecturer who never fails to spark my curiosity in different aspects of philosophy. Again, all you need to do is just show up to class and take notes!!
She's legit the sweetest, most understanding prof I've taken at SJSU. She reopened up two quizzes I missed from her, including the final one, and she's often reopened quizzes for other students as well. Legit amazing. Plus her lectures are engaging and really will make you think. Def participate in the classes, she loves reading/hearing comments.
Class consists of 4 quizzes and 3 essay exams. I didn't do well on one of the essay exams and ended up getting a zero which did bring my grade down significantly, but she has been very kind and lenient with the final grading. Quizzes are fairly easy. Make sure you prepare for the essay exams, she will tell you what the questions are beforehand.
I learned a lot from Asian Philosophy, her teaching is very passionate and open to questions. No technology allowed in class, which was honestly refreshing, but don't forget to bring a pen and paper. Quizzes are straightforward just take notes and pay attention in class. Try not to miss lectures because you might miss a unit needed on a quiz.
Professor Brown is very understanding and caring. Classes are mainly discussions on assigned readings and are not mandatory. Exams, however, are in-class and free response, so you do need to do the readings in order to do well on the exams. 2-3 questions each, around 200 words per answer.
