Mrs. Gargone treats each class with due planning. Each class is a quality session. Always on time, VERY organized. I guess she reminds me of Julie Andrews (in Sound of Music)in her teaching style - fun, cheerful, outgoing. She really LOVES her subject.
lesson plans only slightly correspond to the test. she is very unhelpful and almost rude to questions being raised by the pupils. consideration for anything other than her own course is non existant. alot of work.
the way in which this class was taught was in no reguards to the work load of a full time student. class lessons vaguely corresponded to the tests. and little to no quarter was given on the teachers behalf. as well as a one minded view of music's history.
One of my favorite teachers. She is professional, knowlegeable and has a great personality.
Ms.Gargone is a very unique instructor. She is very knowledge in her subject matter and truly loves what she teaches. I have four children and was taking four classes and still got an A. She's great!
Mrs. Gargone seems nice at first. Then... you realize that she's insane. I love music, classical especially, but taking her class made me feel like I was being dragged through mud. Avoid.
Prof. Gargone is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. She is extremely organized and loves to teach and on top of that she is very light hearted and nice. Ignore the negative comments. They are the words of lazy students who see work are unfair
ignore the nice comment, shes actually hard and will not let you make up a quiz no matter what even if you had a really good reason. quizzes are pretty hard for teh level of class it is. shes not a bad lady but she needs to easen up
Shes awesome ans always willing to help whenever you need it
nice lady but def. doesn't know she teaches INTRO to music...very hard and i'm not a lazy person. her material doesn't correspond to tests.. also doesn't answer questions she will tell you to look it up... avoid if you can
Mrs. Gargone is a very nice lady who should not be teaching an intro class. She loves what she teaches but doesnt realize that most people dont know anything about music. Class is much harder than anticipated.
Shes great!! she loves what she does and if you just take notes in her class and do the reading you'll be fine!!! and if you need any help shes always more than willing to help however she can !
she is knowledgeable and passionate about the music. however, this class is HARD. TONS of terms and decifering from listening. this is a tough course for an intro to music appreciation.
its definatly not an introductory class. shes gives extreamly hard tests. expects way to much from her students as if that is the only class we are takeing. she makes you go to classical concerts and fill out report forms. i wish i didnt have to take it.
Excellent Prof. Very helpful and Nice. A Little flaky but she makes it interesting. Hard, but not impossible.
prof gargone is a nice lady, but her class is ridiculous. i got nothing out of it, and it didn't make me appreciate classical music at all.. memorizing dates and composers, etc isn't going to make me appreciate it. i was fighting falling asleep every day in that class.
Her class was very boring and hard. she was way to involved with music. kind of crazy... she wears the same pants every day and is to mean..... avoid her class...
"Intro" is very deceiving. Be prepared to memorize a bunch of crap and to go to 2 live concerts. After taking this class I appreciate music LESS because she made me hate it. She definitely is knowledgeable in what she teaches but she expects WAYY too much out of students. Still got a B in it though.
Seems all nice at first and then turns into a raving phycho if she doesn't get her way. She will go out of her way to embarrass you in class if she feels you are not participating. I am not the only person who has experienced this, and I have experienced it in 2 of her classes.
The most difficult course I have taken. She is very anal as well. Absences affect your grade. She expects so much out of you, especially for a class that 90% of the students are taking to graduate, and will never use in the future. Ridiculous expectations on her part.
Prof. Gargone is an interesting person. Her passion for music is astounding and i did enjoy her class. But she does expect way to much to start of with and gets a little crazy when shes disappointed. I did learn alot though and would much rather take music appreciation over art appreciation. Take her if your prepared to do the work.
she was boring made you go and see a concert and you had to make sure it was ok with her first. i hated the class so much i had to withdrawl from the class
nearly impossible for a non-music person to grasp. her standards are way too high, she goes into wayyy too much detail and expects you to understand the sounds of instruments in a matter of weeks. she also expects you to go to numerous concerts.
Alright, she has a very wonderful heart and really loves her job as well as music, but she takes her classes way too seriously. Expecting me to spend my time at classical concerts and devoting a good portion of my time to her class is insane. It's an ele
As long as you do the work she won't bust on you. I took her for two semesters and loved her. She got me into different music groups and if I needed help she always had her office hours or after/before class help (if you asked). If people felt singled out by her then it's their own fault for not asking questions or flat out saying "I don't understand".

she made a very hard subject much easier for me. she is VERY helpful, but can sometimes be intimidating. make sure you do the homework and you should be ok. class is fun and i enjoy going to it. if you're interested in music theory and dont know anything about it, go to her
wow can she loosing up about a class where kids think its an easy A, thats the last thing it is and she is a nut, if you dont need it for your major stay out, shes crazy music freak
she is such a nice lady and really loves what she does. i'm not a music major but i dont think her class is that bad at all. she gives out study guides that tell you EVERYTHING on the exam (most stuff is from the notes too.) the only thing thats a pain is the required concerts you have to go to. it was still a good class though
I take Eng Lit and thought it was just with Brown but they make you take music with it! Gargone drags on about things you don't even understand and she expects you to know things when she doesnt even give you any info on what to study and know. She is the only person who thinks she is funny. Annoying when she says anything with an "S". NEW HAIR DUE
shes uncompassionate and a hippie wack job i msurprised they hired her
NOT a BS CLASS,hard n time consuming.A lot of memorization involved.Midterm & Final R 50% of grade n boy are they overwhelming.U listen to a lot of music and must memorize style, form, period, etc etc.She works u til the last min n expects u to remember a lot.Tests build on previous "learned info" from previous chapters.Must attend 2-5 music concerts
She is so nice. you have be interested in the class to appreciate her. she knows more about music than anyone ive ever met. its not an easy 'a' but if you do the work and study you will do well. no papers or projects just quizzes and tests.
Professor Gargone is very into music but is also very nice! She is 100% willing to help you if you only ask! She tells you what to study for all the tests and quizzes and gives you plenty of notice about the 2 mandatory concerts. There is not alot of homework (just reading) but the tests and quizzes require ALOT of studying!
Alot of people bash her, but if you plan your semester right, you can get all the extra credit done. She is extremely smart and really made me apprecate music from a different perspective. Lots of info - she loves music and really expects you to learn and understand what shes teaching. You have to set aside serious study time.
If you usually have to study to pass tests, this class will be hard. I got by with a B+ with little effort. She is very strict with the attendance and lateness policies and will dock your grade if you miss more than 3 days. She really loves what she teaches and she is very knowledgeable, take her if you enjoy music at all. She's an awesome teacher.
I understand why so many people have made negative comments about Gargone, but if you are someone who really enjoys music then you will love her! I took theory in highschool & had a hard time with it but when I took it with her I really understood everything. Music Appreciation was a bit time consuming so if you hate classical music then stay away
I think that she would be a better teacher if she would be a little more lively in the classroom and gave the students a little more leniency when it comes to commentary on the music itself. She does not enjoy it when someone adds to her lecture.
She's an ok professor, but doing two required classical concerts is a hassle. Even if your a music major like me, finding time to do those concerts is a major hassle. And even thoguh shes ok, she's still boring.
She is a pretty easy teacher just a very boring class. If you pay attention and write down the notes you will pass with a B no problem. The concerts you have to attend are really annoying tho, but pay attention and its really easy.
She is a good teacher. Definitely knows what she is talking about. Although she needs to livin' up a bit during the lectures. Make sure you do the work and attend class and you'll be okay. Don't be late she hates being interrupted. Also, be ready to go see some sort of muscical.
this was the hardest professor I ever had at OCC. attendance is so mandatory, let alone, those required concerts are hard (at times) to get too. her tests are long and hard as well. which explains why i recieved a "d" I'm going into the music field, and thought this class would be easy/fun. take my word, it's not as easy as it seems.
This class was harder than I thought it would be. She's strict on attendance and those two ridiculous classical concerts that you MUST attend. Take good notes and prepare yourself for hard quizzes and two major tests. You'll do fine if you do the work!
I barely complain, HOWEVER, this class is an INTRO class and she seemed to not understand that..It was RIDICULOUS. THis class required a lot of time and work. Unpredictable quizzes, tough grader, 2 REQUIRED concerts, 2 tests that were hard! I'm an A student and it was impossible to get this grade. She seems nice, but shes really nasty. Good luck
Gargone is by the book. she jokes around SOMETIMES, but is always teaching whats in the book and gives lots of tedious homework. Music theory is what it is, basically memorizing scales and writing them out, then learning alterations of the scales, its all pretty boring, but if you think music theory actually helps, go for it.
Gargone was nice, her class was easy, make sure you take the notes and know them very well for the tests/quizzes. I got an A and didn't even buy the book. If she thinks you care, she'll help you out!
I took the English/Music "learning community" class.. There is no book, they ruin a whole rain forest with the amount of handouts, but overall, if your NEVER going to be absent, its an ok class. Its supposed to be English AND music, but trust me, its all music.
She is an extremely nice teacher, however her class is flat out hard. I took it thinking it would be easy because i love music, but if you do not study ( like me), and work full time, then passing the tests and going to the 2 required concerts is going to be difficult. Great teacher, Hard class. Only recommended for music majors.
Terrible class. Don't take her.
TERRIBLE TEACHER NOT NICE AT ALL.... TOTALLY WILL NOT WORK WITH ANY STUDENT! SHE WILL MAKE YOUR COLLEGE EDUCATION EXTREMELY HARD AND STRESSFUL. YOU HAVE TO ATTEND CONCERTS AND PAY DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF THE CLASS FOR TICKETS.... TERRIBLE WASTE OF TIME
do not take this professor she is terrible and should not be teaching. People pay alot of money to attend her class and its not worth it. She doesn't want to help you out and seems nice but is very rude.
I think these people are nuts! Prof. Gargone is very professional and intelligent. I find her to be an wonderful teacher. She does expect everyone to be responsible like the adults that you are supposed to be in college, but nasty? No way. I'll bet those are students fresh out of high school that still wants their hands held. LOVE her class.
Being a musician thought this class would be easy. NOT AT ALL! DO NOT take this class. I am a 4.0 student and currently getting a C in the class. It is a STUPID class and the teacher treats you like children. When you ask for help she tells you NOTHING helpful. Seems nice, but she does not care. Again DO NOT BOTHER it is NOT just a BS class.
This professor is horrible. It made me sick to go in an look at her two times a week. She is boring and doesn't treat people nicely. No make up tests she made that perfectly clear. He best quote is,"It's not my problem." With rolling eyes. Thank god this class is finally over now its not my problem anymore! Got a B and def earned it! DO NOT TAKE!
She is very corny and boring. Really annoying, and class is hard as well as tests. Its very hard to get your grade up and you are required to go to 2 classical concerts for the class
this is an excellent professor. she does give ALOT of homework but it helps your grade obviously and your skills. the tests are hard but the loads of homework makes up for it. she is very sweet and loves what she does, to the point where shes in a bit of a trance. she would do anything to help you.
her teaching is not the best
took theory 1 and 2 with her. i had no prior experience with theory, and i still got an A in her class. there is a lot of homework, but it helps when the tests come. she drops the lowest test score. she obv loves music and it shows in her teaching. i would definitely recommend gargone =]
this teacher made my life a living hell. i advise everyone to not take her. she is the devil but worse. i officially hate music because of her.
She is very passionate about music and takes it very seriously. She is not too hard. If you take notes and study you will do fine. 2 concerts are required. She also offers alot of extra credit. She can get very nasty when students make her mad but other than that she is not too bad!!!
Awesome; very passionate about music and her interest helps learning the material. A lot of material, studying, and work, but it's a good class; she's the best person to teach it. No homework except to study. If you're taking this course just to graduate, it probably isn't the best for you. I only recommend to people who LOVE music.
I had her for Music Theory I and II and the class is really hard if you don't have experience, but Gargone is awesome with lessons and she'll help you whenever you like if you need it. She even lets students call her at home with questions. Very helpful and awesome teacher! Had her for 3 classes and can't get enough =)
Horrible. For tests you have to know titles, composers, and genres just by listening to an excerpt of the song. They all sound the same! And all the ones with words aren't in english so you can't tell them apart either. I love music, even classical because I am a ballet dancer, but I absolutely hated her class.
Prof. Gargone is really kind. Her quizzes/tests can be a little tough but she prepares you for them. with study guides and goes over material. She absolutely loves what she does. You have to study for her quizzes/ tests. A lot of memorization (memorizing music pieces) but definitely worth it if you love or are interested in classical music.
Very knowledgable professor and very accomplished musician. Approachable. Can be strict about some things.
I took this class as a humanities requirement. I had played music when I was younger and thought it would be an interesting class. The first few weeks were actually rather enjoyable. Past that it was the most miserable class I have literally ever experienced. This professor turned any possible interested I had in this subject in the complete opposi
I have taken professor Gargone for both Music Appreciation and Music Theory. Professor Gargone is an excellent professor who explains things very well, and is very willing and happy to help during her office hours. All you need to do is put in the effort, music is not a joke. Excellent professor! One of my all time favorites!
I don't know how she is in the music appreciation class but I had her for music theory and she is awesome. She explains everything so well and she's hilarious. She gets so excited when the class understands something. I love her.
Professor Gargone was ridiculously helpful and very kind. She tries very hard to help people understand and is the most excited teacher I've seen for her subject. Not an easy course if you aren't a musician at all though, I wouldn't recommend it as an elective if it isn't your major.
Great Proffessor, really hard class. Be prepared to know the name of the music, composer, year it was composed, and country. HARD HARD HARD. This is NOT and intro class. She is a classical musician and gifted piano player. She expects students to be the same
I have no interest in music but Prof Gargone does a great job on making the subject fun. She loves music and wants her class to love it to. Fairly easy class with quizzes & 2 exams and 2 written essays. Id take it again.
I loved Professor Gargone! I never had experience with Music Theory before, but she helped me understand it very well. I recommend taking her because she tries really hard to help you understand what you are learning and she cares about each student. She gives a lot of hw but it helps w/tests and she drops the lowest test grade. She is excellent!
Professor Gargone is an amazing teacher and was always willing to go the extra mile to see her students succeed. I loved her class! Her enthusiasm and love for music shone through the lectures.
Wonderful Professor!!
Professor Garone was hands down the most difficult professor I have ever had. You absolutely need the book and the listening guide. She is very passionate about her love for music and that's great and all but she does not leave any kind of time to help you. There is no room to miss a class either. If I could do it again I wouldn't take the class.
I enjoy that she is very passionate about what she is teaching, but she expects you to be an expert as well. Don't be late to class, not even 5 minutes.
Professor Gargone is a wonderful music professor whose passion for music is out of this world. Her class is little tough, with 2 required live concert reports. This is NOT a class just to get some credits; if you have an interest for centuries of classical music, then this class is for you. I learned a lot and was impressed by the information.
Just don't even bother taking any class with her. Also doesn't give you the final grade you earned according to the online grade book. I am not the only one with this issue.
This class won't be an easy A unless you put some effort in! She gives lots of notes and hand outs to understand the material and study guides of exactly what is on her tests. She consistently updates grades and answers right away on canvas. Overall enjoyed the class even if I had to put a little work in for my grade
I thought this class would be easy, but it's definitely not. The book with the CD is highly recommended, she expects everyone to know every song. She gives out a lot of handouts to help you throughout the semester which is a big help. Her lectures were boring & long! You have to go to 2 classical concerts in the semester! Test are easy if you study
Not an easy A. Gargone is passionate about her class but expects a lot from her students. Clear expectations and always willing to help.
Gargones class was the HARDEST class Ive ever taken. She is super passionate about music and really knows what shes teaching you, but she expects the same passion from you. Be prepared to listen to HOURS of music at home, dont miss class, and endure boring lectures. I really respect her as a teacher because she is so passionate, but shes tough.
Professor Gargone has a passion for music. She takes her class very seriously and expects the same from her students. Not an easy A by any means - this course requires some serious effort. Luckily, Professor Gargone is phenomenal, and she truly wants each of her students to succeed.
She is very into music. If you are interested in learning more about music, Gargone is a great teacher to take. Classes usually go longer than the period though. She usually assigns a lot of homework. Dont be afraid to get a wrong answer though, making mistakes is part of the class. I plan on taking her classes as long as Im here.
Professor Gargone was a very helpful professor. She went above and beyond to help her students learn the fundamentals of music theory. The book and listening guide are imperative, it is used for homework which is assigned every class. Although, her class was a bit challenging she was a very kind, peaceful, patient lady who is very passionate
If youre thinking about taking this class as an elective or a filler, DONT. In order to actually want to go to this class you have to care about music. She expected ALOT from her students like remembering songs, composers, time periods, genres, and what songs out of a 100 sound like. A Very hard class that you need to study each night for.
I'm a music major and she makes me want to not be a musician anymore. She is excruciatingly boring and her tests, for an INTRODUCTORY course, are extremely difficult. Would not recommend taking any of her courses and if you're a music major, she is the only music professor at OCC so you're better off just going to another school. She's that bad.
Although she talks sweetly and softly, shes very condescending and will get upset and confront you about little things, like going to the bathroom too much. As a music major, shes the main reasons that im transferring after just one year and not two. Her classes are boring and her tests difficult, she expects you to know everything in the book.
IGNORE ANY POSITIVE REVIEWS. Professor Gargone is hands down the worst professor I have ever had. I wouldn't wish this class upon my worst enemy. I used to wish I'd fall down the stairs on my way to her class and be hospitalized instead. She is condescending, grades very hard, and does not care about her students well-being. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
I cant stand her! She makes you attend concerts and than write a paper on them. Some are free some are not. I had to pay 60 dollars to get into a concert just for me to get a 70 on the essay. She is a tough grader and quiz's are SUPER hard. Get ready to memorize the book and listen to music for hours and hours. Very rude teacher.
Don't take this class nor this professor EVER! You've been warned! I took this course because financial aid dropped my courses the day that Spring Semester started, and the advisor said it wasn't difficult. Boy oh boy did she lie! This was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life! The professor is wicked and hard as well! Choose something else.
Dont take this class nor the professor!!! I think this is the worst professor/teacher I have ever had. She talks down to her students like they are 5, doesnt explain things well, and just an overall boring class. Save your time and money, dont take this class!
Absolutely horrible. Who would of thought a music appreciation class would be so ridiculously difficult. It you thought like me that you would you take a class to fulfill a humanities requirement that looks easy THINK AGAIN. Every other week there is a test or quiz and trust me its not easy. Save yourself! Take something else.
As someone who has been playing an instrument for over 10 years, I expected this intro music class to be extremely simple. I was wrong, she does not understand that this is an intro class and acts like this class is extremely important and gives way too much work.
Professor Gargone is a kind and professional musician. Any negative ratings you might read about her being too tough a grader or such are from those whom are not honest with themselves to understand that music is difficult for for them. It is for me, and my non A was well deserved.
As a former professional musician, from playing in ensembles since 5th grade I have to say her method of teaching is incorrect towards the success of her students. She provides over 10-15 pages of book work and only gives us less than 48 hours to hand it in. As being professionally trained my entire life, she has taught material incorrectly.
Ignore any negative reviews. She is honestly the best professor I've ever had. Nice, caring, smart, and always gives feedback. Don't blame her if you don't try in her class! Take her classes!!!!!!
She knows her stuff, but I found this class to be incredibly difficult. The lectures cover a lot. If you miss class, you miss a lot. Exams were very difficult, but she did a curve for our exam and I got a 100 on the test because of it. Read the book/go to the lectures and you should do fine! I will warn you though, study regularly for this class!
Worst class ever! Do not take! Was heading into this class expecting an easy A, boy was I wrong. Very condescending, talks down to students, and grades very very tough. Her discussion posts should not be graded on accuracy, and rather completion. Worst class ever.
Gargone is a very sweet woman, if you dont like reading/outlining this may not be the course for you. In this class you read 13 chapters in the textbook and complete outline WSs on them, they're easy if yk what you're doing (she gives you template on how 2 do them). Then you take a short 1 page quiz on the chapter & there is 1 collage project(fun)
Professor Gargone is a sweet, experienced person who is willing to help you if you communicate. I was quick to judge too at the beginning of the semester, but through talking with her and understanding the reasoning behind her methods I come to find she is so dedicated to music that she will help you any way she can! All and all, would recommend
Awesome teacher, really knows her stuff. A huge portion of the homework was to read the textbook and listen to the music. You have to put in the effort to get a good grade. Always willing to help you, if you communicate. You can tell she really cares about her students and wants to see them succeed. All in all, I would highly recommend her.
I don't feel like this class did much for me. She gave off a rude impression. Lectures were boring and I didn't feel anymore passion towards music like I used to. The information is fascinating, but doing the same assignment all of the time doesn't keep someone motivated, nor does it help everyone get a good grade. I just didn't like her teaching.
she was not good at all. hardest class I took the whole semester, and I had stem courses. behaved differently while being observed, super condescending in real life
