She knows her stuff, and she makes the class interesting by relating the ideas of the class to her experiences (of which she has many.) It is a an easy class, as you can probably assume by the name.
She likes to mention material briefly in class and then put a large chunk of that topic on the exam so no one will great it correct. She puts up the powerpoint slides AFTER her lectures to encourage people to come to class, but this is actually useless. She once said after a difficult exam that "Life is a B*tch and so am I." DO NOT TAKE HER.
She is one of the great professors I have seen so far. But be careful, class is not curved and this policy is not chenged, just keep up and don't mess up on the first exam.
Worst class ever. There are 8 exams, and when you do dissections you leave the class smelling like cats and fish. Prof shows up late to exams, is not understanding, rude, and doesnt know material well. Labs do not connect to lecture, are not structured, and are very time consuming, time outside of class is required! material very detail oriented.
I am an A student, and I got an A in Bios 272. But watch out because this class was horror. This class was extremely time consuming and you don't get any help from the teacher who has no sympathy or the TAs. Don't take the class. I haven't met one person in my class at that time who didn't regret taking it. If you take it, devote ALL YOUR TIME.
The material is difficult at first then once it's understood, you will realize that it's very TIME-CONSUMING. The exams are very easy compared to what's covered. Exams are straight from the lecture slides.
Worst professor at UIC! She doesn?t know what she is doing. The syllabus and powerpoints were outdated. Lectures were very unorganized. Powerpoints were posted weeks after lecture. She puts material on the exam that she says won?t be on there. Questions on the exam don?t test your knowledge of the material, they are just dumb questions.
Horrible professor! Boring, mean, and unsympathetic. The subject is easy but exams are tricky. She put stuff that wasn't covered in lecture on our 2nd exam. She later on admitted it was her mistake but claimed "that's life." Very unfair class with no curves.
Avoid if possible. Can't believe UIC still keeps her. Very bad teacher with bad personality. Material is not hard but she trys to screw you up in any possible way. Think about ur GPA before taking the class w. her. I am an A student and taking the class w. her was my biggest mistake and worst exper. ever.
She seems unapproachable but she made the class more interesting than I thought it would be. She's actually very passionate about the subject. You can do well on exams if you go to lecture and take notes on it (most people didn't go and that is probably why they complain). If you go and take notes, you don't need to read.
SO HARD! we had no homework of any sort, but 8 exams! lectures were boring and i couldn't pay attention for long. she sometimes arrive 10-15 minutes late for the first morning lecture. lab exams were so painful, and i study. one particular question, we had to feel out a huge bone hidden under a musty blanket and name the bone in 30sec!
Very unorganized, I attended every lecture and studied from my notes and still did not do as well as I wanted to. To those that say pay attention to lectures, I say not worth it. Just read from the book. She only talks about her research in the Galapagos and her love for lizards. She appears passionate but does not engage the students at all.
Okay, these bad ratings are ridiculous. I hate biology and this class was a breeze for me. Who cares if she comes 5mins late and drinks coke, she makes everything very understandable and all you have to do is come to lecture, take notes, and study them and you are guaranteed an A in class, on top of that she offers EC that really helps your grade.
Wow lady lay off the cokes its getting to your fat head. The other fat ta make life miserable for us healthy people. Stop grading so hard its animal behavior. Its not that complicated animals want to survive or reproduce why make tests so hard.
her lecture is interesting... tests seem easy but after i was always shocked looking at my grades... little extra credit is offered. i took notes, went to every lecture understood material but still didnt help.. so i wud say u shud avoid her, u get a bad grade even after working hard.
I somehow got an A in this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF KARIN IS TEACHING IT. Her lectures are VERY confusing because she just puts random slides together. She shows no enthusiasm for teaching and her tests are ridiculous. Only 2 people got A?s on our first exam. It is possible to do well. But, this is my no means a blow off class.
Exams are straight off lecture slides, of which many are pictures so you gotta go to class to figure out what she says bout' them. 2 exams, 1 final, all 100/each and thats it. Around 30 points of EC, most on exams, and some in easy 2 min. assignments. SHE F-CKS UP grading the scantron, 1 or 2 questions/exam from book, Articles not really necessary
You think the tests would be easy because the slides seem so to the point but don't be fooled. This class is difficult. The 1st test is the hardest and after it you can't get an A in the class. You are left with getting a B or C. Bullshit. Don't take her. Plus the extra credit is usually 3-5 extra questions on the exam so don't think its free point
One word to describe her: HORRIBLE!
You would think that the exams would be easy cuz her lecture slides are so to the point but you are wrong. They are difficult, you coming out after the 2nd & 3rd exam feeling confident and then get a C or B. The 1st exam is the hardest, messes up our grade. For extra credit u you get 3-5 question on the exam, its not bonus points
terrible. questions are tricky.. only a 30 point difference in between letter grades. only gave 26 extra credit points, which was absolutely no help!!
Don't get me wrong, this class is hard. You've got to put in plenty of work, but if you can do that, you'll be fine. There are 8 exams, each 100 pts, 3 in lecture and 5 in lab. The lec. exams are each more difficult than the last, while the first 2 lab exams are challenging and the last 3 are quite easy. Ex. the 5th lab exam avg. was 89.58%

One more thing - attendance is not mandatory at lecture, but it's a good idea to go. She gets mad as the class size dwindles down and on the second exam, she added 4 questions that you would have only known had you been at lecture. She tends to mumble, so watch out for that. Also, another thing that's nice is the final is not cumulative.

Im an A student. Took her, got the first C in my life. She is the worst professor in Illinois. HORRIBLE attitude problem, couldn't care less about her students, cant teach this material if her life depended on it, NOT helpful, lazy. Syllabus has wrong chapters to read. exams=impossible. If UIC knew what was good for them they would fire her ASAP.
I've never had a professor who could successfully put SO many people to sleep within a 75 min time frame. Lab and lecture are like two different classes, but I'm pretty sure my TA taught me more than she did. Very inconsiderate and doesn't seem interested in helping. Tests are stupid, she asks the most random facts from her boring lectures. Ugh.
One of the worst professors I've had at UIC. She does not show any sort of compassion for her students and makes exams much harder than necessary. She mumbles whenever she does not know how to clearly understand a concept and always drinks diet coke.
A lot of people are complaining about her but I disagree for the most part. Go to class, take notes, read the book. You know, be a STUDENT. I've had her for 230/236/335 and done well in all of them. She doesn't curve, she makes difficult exams and forces you to actually know the material. It's mostly upper level Bio, it SHOULD be harder.
Attend all lectures! even if they are power points. just print out the power points, attend lecture, and write notes. She loves using specific examples in lecture, which will be on the exam. Main problem occurs with the wording of questions on her exams. There is no curve. For exams build a vocab list, questions cover the definition precisely.
KN kicked me out of class for being high out of my mind. And thank God, because she taught me a valuable lesson about the history of life. KN, you may have a long blonde ponytail, but I don't judge you. You're a good person!!
If you think you will get an A in her class... forget about it. You're getting a B.
She explains the material very well. The class itself, all points come from exam with extra credit on exams. That sucks if you are a mediocre test taker, but not a bad class by any means.
she makes it easy when it comes to lecture, but when it's on the test she likes to use "big" vocab which can be indecisive at times, she's also always late to class
SHE IS A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. I DON'T THINK THAT HER LEVEL OF TEACH NOR THE BOOK PREPARES YOU FOR THE EXAM. HER CUT-OFFS ARE RIDICULOUS. I BELIEVE THE BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT REALLY NEED TO TAKE A DEEPER LOOK AT THE BOOKS WE USE FOR THIS COURSE AND SEE THAT THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING YOU GAIN FROM THE BOOK IS MUCH LOWER THAN THE INTENSITY OF THE EXAMS.
I thought it would be hard at first in her class, but it's actually pretty decent. Most of the questions on the exams require a lot of good reading to fully understand them because they can be a little tricky. Make sure to take notes in her lecture and also to read the book and you'll do fine.
WHY IS SHE STILL TEACHING? She is very unenthusiastic about biology, indifferent and disrespectful to students, always late to class! What a waste of my tuition and tax money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So her lectures are boring because she reads right off the ppt slides. lectures are NOT mandatory. exams are literally STRAIGHT out of the ppt slides, u don't even need to look at the book. but you have to study the picture slides too. grade is based on three exams, but she has TONS of extra credit on each. just study, and u'll be fine
She is not that bad. There are three tests, all multiple choice. Most of the information is on the powerpoint but a lot is also based on what she says during lecture. You have to read and attend every lecture. Take notes from the book and her lectures and you'll be fine. Study hours before the exam and it will be worth it. For BIOS 230, Nelson wins
Extremely hard class. Only three exams. If you mess up on one exam, like literally your grade is screwed. She shows up to class late everytime and you can barely hear her.
I got exactly a 90%, which is the cutoff for the A. Lectures are boring, but she tries to make it interesting by using her experiences. Attend lecture, you would be a fool not to. The reason why she makes the exams hard is because no one attends, so by not going you guys end up hurting yourselves. Find old ppt's, print them and take notes and STUDY
WORST PROFESSOR AT UIC! If you want to do well, do not ever take one of her courses. She Hardly knows her material, does not post powerpoints until after lecture. Her slides are all over the place and make no sense. Her exams are very hard regardless of the fact that you spent hours studying. She would probably fail at her own exams.
If I could go back, I would of switched to a different professor. Grade is based on 3 exams ONLY. I was 1 question away from a B and she doesn't care if you come to lecture everyday. Does not help. Does not reply to emails.
I don't understand peoples' critiques about her?? I thought she was actually pretty interesting, her tests were ridiculously easy.. I didn't even read the book. I just read all of the articles she posted online and I payed attention in class. She's a nice/funny person!
What is everyone talking about?! Nelson was a good teacher, and this class was NOT HARD. Her lectures were really interesting (if you like bio..), she knows her stuff and has lots of helpful anecdotes. I never read the book; tests were straight from lecture and I got an A no problem just from going to class, taking notes and STUDYING.
Her class was good and you do learn a lot, however, you have to study because she DOESN'T curve no matter what...so therefore, read the book and study a good amount and you should do GREAT...:)
Her lectures seem to last forever. Her powerpoints are basic and sometimes useless for studying if you don't attend lecture and take notes because she adds on a lot of material. KNOW specific examples in the ppts because they will come up on exams. The textbook isn't really necessary unless you're skipping lectures.
Prof. Nelson has problems. She spends more time talking about random crap that she has done in her research career than she does about Bio. The slides look like they have been thrown together by a high school junior. There is absolutely no reason to attend class to get an A. I'm sure she knows her stuff, but it doesn't come through during class
3 tests = final grade. No curve. I got a 66 on one of the exams even though I studied, read the book, never skipped class, and went to TA office hours for help. Her teaching is fine - with lots of stories about reptiles.
Lots of tests. Lots of material. This class requires dedication, but she does curve it.
super easy class with funny professor
Nelson is a good lecturer, especially since she's funny and hints at topics we should know for exams. Read required online articles, do practice problems, and definitely read the book because the third exam contained a lot of book material. Tests are very difficult, especially the first two. Class is not curved, but each exam has extra credit.
I don't understand why her rating is so low. She is an excellent teacher, especially since she's able to make a boring topic interesting. Her lectures are great. She hints of topics we should know. The reason she makes exams hard are because people ditch. Exams have extra credit, it's basically equal to a 10% curve if you get it all.
I found Dr. Nelson's lectures to be clear, concise, and informative( and at times, even humorous). There's no lecture capture, so attendance is imperative. Tests can be a little confusing, and there are only three. It sucks if you have an off day. That being said, I'd rather have another lecture than another exam. Highly recommended.
I have taken three classes with Dr. Nelson and never have I been met with so much animosity when asking questions or trying to clarify her terribly written test questions and assignments. Coming from the anthropology department where teachers are extremely helpful without "academic babysitting", the UIC biology department has been a let down
Professor Nelson exam's are so difficult, it is not even funny. I paid attention to class, took notes, and studied for her exams. For this class, you really need to know and understand EVERYTHING! I will not take her again.
This class is pretty easy. At first I was a little turned off by her attitude and teaching style but I quickly learned to really like her and got used to her upfront attitude. She held my attention during lecture and is pretty funny too. Not a bad class, pretty interesting.
her class was not easy but is possible..just need to understand the concepts and how apply it...above read the book in order the concepts to be clear..
DON'T take this class. It's extremely interesting but extremely difficult. The average in the class was a 63%. She only curves about 30 points. She asks extremely difficult specific questions like what era certain specific dinosaurs were from. (she uses only scientific names). She's not helpful at all & generally is rude if you ask for help. V HARD
Class grade consists of three exams and exams are difficult. The key to doing good in class=paying attention to lectures and reading the book. If you do these things, you should be fine. If you ditch lecture, no wonder you're doing bad. Things she says in class end up on exams. Funny teacher.
Things she says in class end up on exams, so pay attention! Do the practice problems and read required articles. Read the book because exam contains some book content. Funny teacher. Hard exams! No curve, but there's extra credit.
At first I was intimidated by the course because the exams were hard, but I adjusted by listening to specific examples she said in class and that helped me on following exams. If you ditch even once, that means a couple of points off an exam. This is a big deal because 3 tests=grade. No curve, but there's extra credit on all exams. Funny.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She doesn't care about you as a student. She won't help you. Only 3 tests NO CURVE! I went to almost every class, read both her textbooks and studied ahead but it didn't help. She is rude and not professional at all. If you are a bad test taker DO NOT TAKE HER!
Her tests are extremely hard, she sometimes rants about other useless stuff that is not even part of lecture. She does not give homework maybe because she is too lazy to put in the grade book saves her work. Lectures are also very boring its ridiculous, a lot of reading included as well. Do not take this teacher. I had better professors than this.
If you can deal with a challenge. This is it. But if you're someone who likes homework, quizzes and extra credit. Take someone else. She's not a great teacher. She doesn't curve, no homework, 50% of the time boring lectures that are highly important for the exams. She crams 4-8 chapters in an exam. All in all, don't take her.
First, she's pretty funny and clear in lecture for the most part. Now,this class should be easy since it's pretty much review of general biology, but it's not!Exams are very hard and some questions have more than 1 possible answer(ambiguous). Memorize the tiniest detail in her slides and know all her story examples, they appear on the test. No curve.
People are rating her badly because her exams are VERY hard. She makes them hard because people skim lectures. Maybe if people attended class, she wouldn't make them so brutal. Pay attention in lecture and to her stories and you'll survive.
great teacher, not easy by any means. She does make her classes a challenge, I am currently taking my third class with her, do not slack off, attend lecture-pay attention, do the readings and you should be fine. She doesn't like responding to emails bcuz most explanations are long n elaborate, but if you visit office she will help, do your part
Dr. Nelson has very interesting lectures and her stories are cool as well. Unfortunately your entire grade is based on exam scores only, as there is no homework or quizzes. If you are up for a challenge, go for it!
People said this was the easiest course for bio majors before I took this course and I found it to be the hardest after homeostasis because Nelson made exams extremely difficult and that made it hard to get a good score in the course. I advise strictly attending lectures because she hints on what will end up on exams.
Karin is a great teacher. She's super passionate about what she teaches and expects you to pull your own share of weight in class. Read the books, pay attention to her lectures, and ask questions. She doesn't post her slides beforehand, so it's a hassle to write down notes. Always helped me out when I needed it. Careful with her tricky tests.
Her class was pretty easy, but she doesn't curve at all which sucks. So whatever you get is what you get. Her exams are pretty fair and the hw assignments are easy. Just do well on the exams and don't blow off the hw and you can get an A.
easy class! The first exam was just like the power points and the second one was even easier. Great class and she was the nicest person to approach.
The test were straight out of power points and power points straight from book.. I thought the material was EASY others disagree but either way if you read or show up you are sure to do well, plus she makes it fun
I took Dr Nelson last semester and I ended up withdrawing because it was just too hard. But she is really nice , caring etc. I STILL EMAIL HER TIL THIS DAY. SHE IS HILARIOUS BUT i WOULDNT TAKE HER CLASS UNLESS YOURE A GENIOUS!
Save your GPA. She is good lecturer, but her exams are crazy!!!!! If I had the chance to drop it, I would... Averages are 50-60 % and she does not curve... ONCE AGAIN save your GPA!
Horrible teacher, her exams are really tough, she brings things out of the blue. She does not curve the class. Do not take her, take a different teacher if you can. Would not recommend anyone to take her. Will not curve even if your a 2 or 3 points from passing.
She's a teacher that wants to make sure you really understand what your being taught, not just short term memorization. Her workload is relatively low (3 test, 3 hw assignments and a paper) so not much room for error. She's very willing to help you just have to talk to her after class or at office hours. Go to lecture and read the textbook
The animal behavior lab class is an easy A. I have taken Ecology and evolution plus Animal behavior lecture with her, and in those classes she is an incredible tough grader. HOWEVER, in the animal behavior lab you practically just need to show up to get an A.
She is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed her lectures. There were 3 HW assignments that were pretty easy and accounted for a quarter of your overall grade. Three tests, expect to read and study for them as they each account for a quarter of your grade. Tests are rough, but if you study you should be fine.
Read this carefully. I will NEVER take her again. Don't get me wrong her lectures are interesting, but her exams are too hard. I studied so hard for her exams and even so I am lucky enough to pass with a C. From my personal experience, if you are good with multiple choice exams suit yourself, but if you are not (like me) DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
One of the hardest bios classes at UIC to get A grade. Exam questions are from details in textbook and random examples outside of her lectures. NO CURVE even if you are 1 POINT AWAY from next letter grade. Exams have 10 points extra credit, but still hard to get good score. Homework might help but not much as answers are difficult to find. AVOID!!!
One of the best professor at UIC. If you keep up with the readings, take notes, and do your homework, you will be fine. She gives 10 extra credits on every exam and easy assignments to bump up your grade. English is not my first language and I was able to keep up with the readings and do very well on exams, what is your excuse?
Lectures are interesting but exams are tough for they test details from the book. Unorganized! Spends too much time talking about her adventures. She crammed 8 chapters the lecture before the exam and expected us to know them well. Gave 10 points extra credit on exams. Pretty strict about the cutoffs. 89.8% was a B. This class was a stress!!!!!!!
Extremely rude and sarcastic. Tests are hard. She will not help you if you are struggling. She gives 10 EC pts on the exam. NOT an easy A, not even a easy C. Take someone else.
Had this professor for a couple classes and will never take her again. She can be funny but also rude. I attended every lecture, took notes, studied and felt like I answered all questions on the exam correctly but the TA kept taking points off for everything. Also, Assignments are assigned last minute and you don't receive back.
nelson is the worst professor I've ever had at uic. her exams are hard she expects students to know every detail in the book. Her lectures are boring. Gives homework assignments late in the semester with a project. DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS HORRIBLE!! Take someone else but do not take classes with her, you will regret it!!
She is very unprofessional. She only scratches the surface of the material during lectures (you need to know way more for the exams). Responds very sarcastically to questions and is overall unpleasant to talk to. Exams are extremely hard and include around 10 chapters each. A lot to study, read and understand on your own. Beware.
I actually kinda enjoyed her humor, but she wasnt a very good teacher. She doesnt stick to the syllabus and I got very confused by the grading. I went to every lecture, but the tests revolve around application and the questions can be pretty tricky. Homework is taken straight from the book
Please save yourself the misery and do not take this professor. She is very rude to her students especially when asking questions. She does not seem like she cares one bit about her students. There are two books and the exams have anywhere from 10-15+ chapters on them. You need to eat, sleep, breath this class otherwise you will fail.
It was a difficult course in that each exam tested on 6-10 chapters each. You need to go to class because she is very thorough and detailed. Her lectures are very interesting, but you also need to read the book. Nothing is off limits on exams. I learned a lot, but there's an extraordinary amount of reading for this class. Need to be diligent.
This was one of the hardest bio classes I ever took, and thats saying a lot since bio is my life. Exams had 10 chapters on them, & as someone said below, she barely scratched the surface of the material. They should spilt the class into either Ecology or Evolution because its too much otherwise. Save yourself the pain and take someone else.
She barely discusses the material. She heavily talks about her past research, and expect to read more on your own. You won't pass the course if you don't read the book and understand the concept on your own.
Honestly, I have never come across a narcisstic, self victimizing waste of a prof like her. She constantly complains about things not going her way yet does not care about anything in her student's life. She does not deserve a respectable job of a teacher when she is this ungrateful and opposite of growth for students.
Had this professor my senior year. This professor alone has dimmed my view of UIC's choices in staff. She spends lectures talking about her past research "glory days", makes jokes about being attractive, and spends most of class degrading confused students while self loathing. Good luck trying to find her during office hours for help on anything
I enjoyed her lectures very much. She is very passionate about what she does. I read the book for the first exam then didn't as much for the last 2. Know her lectures in and out and be able to apply that information to the way ecology works. She gives 10 points extra credit on the exams but don't overthink the questions!
Some might have personality issues with her, i did in the first lecture. But she grew on me because the stories she tells are interesting and informative. Its nice to have a real life perspective from her stories vs a prof that reads off the slides. Overlook the personality part and she is VERY informative and entertaining. Never went to office hrs
I think she had really interesting stories to talk about but overall the class was overloading in chapters to read. She is a ok lecturer but her ppts are very vague. Alot of the detail is from the books. you should NOT take this class unless you are ready to read 10-15 chapters per test or cram a bunch of information.
Nelson's lectures is not bad, just very lengthy and often talks about her research on marine iguanas. Most of your exam questions will be based on the PowerPoints and the few homework assignments she will put on BB. I think she also curves (she'll say she doesn't) because I had an 87% in her class on BB but somehow got an A. Hope this helps:)
Her exams were all written. You have little room to improve your grade if you do bad on one of the exams.
Tips on how to ace her class: - Pay attention to her class lectures, even her obsessions on marine iguanas will be on exam - Get 100% on homework assignments - Look at her PPT slides These are what I did to get an A in this class. She will say that she does NOT curve, but a lot of people who had an 88 or 87 ended up getting an A. Hope that helps.
This professor literally opens the books and points to make her tests. Be ready to hear about iguanas. As a prerequisite know the difference between a lizard and an iguana. Also if you dont have a strong understanding of bios 100 and 101 you will do poorly. There are also two books.
Lectures are posted but there's often glitches so just go to lecture. MOST people don't go to class, that's why the average is so low. This class requires DAILY studying. Know every single detail as exams get harder over time. Lab is difficult at first, but gets better over time. Don't take if you aren't willing to put the work in. Class is curved
I would not recommend her to anyone. We were behind 7 lectures, she cut half the material due to limited timing, exams were multiple choice with "choose the best answer" approach, hardly any homework, and was reading intensive with 2 textbooks. She even messed up final grades upon submission. You think you know ecology until you take this class.
She explains things very well. You have to go to lecture, definitely. She expects you to read. I thought she was very knowledgable.
Very boring class. She's a nice person, but she really drags out her lectures instead of just getting to the point and then complains that we're behind. Tests and homework assignments online are mostly multiple choice but questions can be very unclear/confusing sometimes. There's also 2 books for the class.
Nelson changed the way she teaches this course significantly. Although she recommends 2 books, her powerpoint slides contain enough information for the exam. All her tests are multiple-choice and quite easy. Each test has couple points of extra credit. The homework she assigns is very easy. I was expecting this to be a hard course but it was easy.
The class is very relaxed. It contains a lot of extra credit chances on exams only. Rough 10+ extra points on each exam. She will say to read the book but its not necessary as I only read it for the first exam. Study her slides at least 2 weeks in advance to achieve a great grade. A lot of material/chapters are crammed into her exams. Only 5 hws.
Best thing to study is the lecture slides online. Then, after that, the text book is quite useful. There are resources to use. The class is test heavy but not THAT test heavy, you will get a lot of points. Take the online homework really seriously like a quiz or test for take home. She is a good teacher.
I am a student that loves biology. Professor Nelson was not a good professor. She is very rude to the students, very off topic during lecture, and her slides are old and outdated. Exams are best answer approach instead of correct answer. I would not recommend her to any student.
She doesn't really care about her students. I would not take her class again. She is disinterested in how her students are doing and has on several occasions been dismissive on issues the class has.
Shes ok. She can make lecture entertaining when she tries but her lectures are very off topic. Not a bad professor, she just does the bare minimum.
This instructor does not care about her students future. During the pandemic (Sp 2020) she did not even continue to instruct our class properly. She uploaded lectures from previous semesters and it was not helpful. When we would ask questions to clarify she was reply negatively. I DO NOT encourage you to take this professor!!!
There are 3 exams. You have to study a lot to get a good grade. As a teacher, she doesn't care about her students. She is too passionate about her tropical iguanas. Also, she is very sarcastic when answering questions.
The content is not that bad, but the professor makes it really hard. She goes off topic a lot in lecture, is all over the place, pushes exams, never updates the syllabus, gives tricky exams, responds rudely to emails, falls behind on lectures, and gives rude comments. I don't think she cares much for the students. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER AT ALL
Was taking this class at UIC until COVID started, then we switched to online classes. I have never been more shocked at how unprofessional, uncaring, and naive Karin Nelson & her TA were during a world wide pandemic. She couldnt even provide us up-to-date lectures, so she just uploads ones from years ago. This isnt what I paid 15K/semester for.
Does not care about her students very much is not accessible.
This class is easy if you like to read research articles and write roughly 2 papers a week. There is no final however there is a presentation. Theres a lot of homework but it isnt difficult as its just writing. Its a very social class and requires your attendance. She is a very interesting professor and this class new so things can change! Gd:A
This professor has a tendency to make easy concepts much harder than they actually appear. Was practically nonexistent once everyone was forced to go online. I recommend taking this class elsewhere if not taught by a different professor. Her grading cutoff is extremely strict.
She was an okay teacher in person but her strict rules can really make this class a lot more difficult for no apparent reason. Her exams are also super specific and that may have been due to the online transition. If you have the option, take it with another professor! Her grading cutoffs are also very strict (one point away from a letter grade).
She is a very interesting professor. However, the test for this class are ridiculously hard. Her test her is completely write out. You may see fill in the blank type of questions without a word bank if you are lucky. She wants a 10 pg single spaced paper with tendencies requirements. The lab to this class is only offered in the summer. To much hw..
She tasks you with reading up to 5 articles of 5+ pages every week with the focus on 1 or 2 papers which you then have to write 2 papers on. Except that she has not read them yet. How do I know that? She was asked to describe one paper during a session. She had to wait to go home, read the paper, and then explain it to the student in an email.
Don't take her if possible, there is another professor for this class which is way better. She used all the old recording videos while the transition to online. She responds to emails in a very rude manner. exams are too hard and She doesn't even round upgrades for 2 points.
If you want to spend a whole semester listening to constant iguana rants and watch her chug two diet cokes every class then take her. Grade is heavily dependent on exam scores so if you mess up once it will be very hard to bring your grade back up. Ignored every email I sent her. Refused to round up my grade and I was off by just 1 point.
Took during COVID but lectures were interesting! Did get off topic but connected it to the original material. Super strict so be ready. Had office hours, so she was accessible. May come off as sassy, but she is just straightforward. Really understanding and offered extra credit to boost grade. TA didnt follow syllabus & made the quizzes unrelated!
While I understand some of the criticisms against her, I overall think she was a very fair and respectable professor. She is very knowledgeable in her field and made the course material interesting. Her tests can be difficult, and combine lecture and textbook material, but the problem sets provide an opportunity to easily raise your grade.
Nelson wasn't that bad of a prof. That class isn't really that interesting, at least to me. Lectures can get very boring and monotone, so I watched them at 1.75x speed. Exams are a big factor in your grade, so really study for them. A lot of the class had extremely high B's and she wouldn't round so make sure your grade is where you want it to be.
i feel like she put this class on the back burner.. she is always late to upload hw and grades. never gives feedback. lectures were recorded in 2019. required 2 textbooks and requires 2 reading per week, which is kind of a lot for such a useless course. throws questions in her quizzes that were not in her lectures and expects us to know them.
I'll put it simple. Late on giving assignments. Discourages cooperation and asking for help. Bad quality lectures. Kidnapped a cat for some reason. Has a weird fetish for iguanas. Quizes are not related to material studied most of the time. Requires 2 textbooks. Rude when emailed to. Rude when asking for help. Rude when rude.
I can't tell what are we paying her for... she uses videos from last year (on some of them, it's not even her who is reading the lecture but some unfamiliar person), and you would think since she spends 0 time lecturing that she would have more time to grade our tests and respond to the emails, but no.... she is as slow as she can be
Do not take this professor. She will email you a day or two before hw is due instead of having it clearly laid out in the syllabus. For college students with jobs it makes it really hard to stay organized. She also does not have a point total listed in the syllabus. I emailed her to ask the total points available in the class but she ignored me.
Nelson is an AWFUL choice in a professor the only reason people take her class is because the good professors get full first. She is rude to students, disorganized, inconsiderate, and a liar. She says no plagiarism but uploaded a lecture that wasn't even her presenting, she lies about answer choices she'll accept from students and gives them 0s.
UIC did them selves a disservice when they hired her. She does absolutely NOTHING in this class she makes the TA send emails, grade homework, and make up quizzes. She has no point total in this class and tells us to "try our best" without us knowing what we need to get an A in the class. She does not care about students and only cares about herself
Run the other direction. It's almost like she is a professor as a 5th job where she makes her TA do all work of emailing students regarding work and making quizzes. Quizzes are extremely random and unrelated to the material. When we ask for help both the TA and professor come off blunt and unwelcomingly. Again, run the other direction.
Theres a quiz every week. And by quiz I mean 20-40 questions each time all while being timed. And the time she gives is unfair and unreasonable. She also doesnt follow her syllabus and is uncompassionate about her students. Emailing her always leads to her being rude and unhelpful. The worst professor Ive ever taken at UIC.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. At one point this semester she assigned us reading from our textbook for a chapter that didn't exist. She would send us lectures from youtube to avoid making them herself. Her quizzes were ridiculously hard as some of them covered 6 chapters of material and were random facts. Shes rude and unhelpful. BAD
Karin was my worst experience at UIC thus far. She was the most rude and uncompassionate teacher I think I've had in my life. She provides NO wiggle room in terms of scores dropped or extra submission attempts, and if you make a mistake and upload the wrong document you will receive a catty email and a zero in the grade book. DO NOT TAKE NELSON
At times we were being quizzed on 4-5 chapters content for the weekly quiz. Youll never know what you got wrong because this lady does not allow TA to share anything. Youll beg for upgrade when youre at 89.8 but this genius is never gonna do it. Bunch of essay assignments. Dont get deceived by weekly quizzes they are no less than a exam
literally the worst and rudest professor at UIC, especially during a pandemic. Even she does not know what she is doing in the class, forgets to assign homework and then assigns 2 in a week. 2 required textbooks and several chapters from each are assigned weekly on top of 6+ hours of lectures where she rants about random things and explains nothing
super easy class made impossible by a professor who does not care about her students. expect sassy rude emails where she blames her students for everything- if she even bothers to respond. they grade the homework and quizzes wrong all the time but you do not recieve a key for anything. dont bother going to office hours b/c they "cant answer that"
she is the worst professor that could ever exist. she will assign weekly quizzes which are 20-25 questions and will be covering 6+ chapters for each week. she is very rude, like she will volunteer to be rude. nit helpful when asking questions and emailing. she will always be rude when replying and sometimes not even reply. don't take her class
Worst professor I've had so far. Mean, rude, lazy, poor communicator, not accommodating, and leaves emails on read. No answer keys for quizzes and HW gets graded late w little to no feedback. Makes 1 TA grade 200 assignments at a time. 25 EC pts; lots of us ended w high Bs but she doesn't even round 0.50+. Lectures and slides are too long.
Do NOT ask this professor for a Letter of Recommendation - she ghosted me. Highly unprofessional professor. I am glad her faculty-led study abroad program was canceled, it was meant to be that I did not travel to another country with this woman. She is a useless instructor as well, I completely taught myself the content.
I am here just to agree with all these reviews. I took her class thinking she might have changed her style after seeing all these reviews but NO. If you're reading this to take her class DO NOT repeat my mistake. Run the other way.
This class has weekly homeworks and quizzes, and is super super heavy on lecture and information given. Youre taking a quiz weekly on about 3 different chapters of reading and 2+ hours of lecture, and her questions are from herself so its really hard. Be ready to think you got a 100 on a quiz then you end up with a 75. Homeworks are unclear.
Her slides were bloated and lacking detail, but contained interesting topics. She gave out a lot of good extra resources. Quizzes were weekly chores rather than reflections of knowledge. The expectation is to read the textbook and take notes on hour long lecture videos. You can learn everything taught in this class by browsing Wikipedia.
I am so relieved to see that I am not the only student that felt this way towards this professor. She is HIGHLY unprofessional and not accommodating at all. By far the worst professor I've ever had at UIC.
She is very bad professor, doesn't really give clear instructions and give zero points for not following instructions. Don't take her class.
Do NOT take Karin Nelson. She never gives full points on anything but maybe one homework. Try as hard as you can, still get a B. You will not get full points. I was looking forward to this class until it was completely self taught online. Worst decision I ever made to take this class, and I did go into it with an open mind after reading her reviews
This class is terrible, dont take it unless you have to. Weekly quizzes are over 20 questions and are harder than exams, only 12% of students got an A after the low 20 point curve
Super strict on deadlines, she doesn't care about your grade at all. Doesn't respond to emails, and it feels like she want to get lectures and everything over with so she can leave the class. sometimes late to class
This is the absolute WORST professor I have ever had at UIC. She doesn't care for her students and makes her practicals similar to "med school exams" to help "prepare us" for our future and does not seem to care about students' grades. Don't take this class if you want to keep your sanity. About 60% of students dropped the class.
I never seen like this professor ever before. She is a very disorganized person. Don't even believe her syllabus, everything will be changed as what she wants. THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. do not take her class, if you can. Trust me.
This professor is no good. She makes her weekly quizzes difficult for no reason, she hates teaching as can be seen by her voice. You won't get good grades on the homeworks, only 12% of the class got an A after he 20 points curve (the TA said it would be 30...). MY advise is do not take her, avoid her at all costs, you won't learn anything. GL
I found this class and how she teaches it to be very difficult. Lab is very difficult. There is no guidance what so ever, even the TA is lost. It is a "here is the bone/muscle name, now find it" kind of lab. There is no study guide or word bank for the practicals. Grade is based on lecture ad lab exams only.
Prof was kinda all over the place and would go off course during lecture. If you want to do good, just read the books and skip classes. Questions on quizzes were sometimes never once mentioned on lectures and you didnt know what your grades were until after the final...procrastination ig. Overall she means well but sucks at teaching!
Due to the professor's inability to be organized with the material we lost out on many assignments that could have helped students get points. Quiz times were odd and certain questions weren't in the lecture/reading material. Her unwillingness to accept any late assignment was very frustrating seeing as she would wait WEEKS to put grades in.
Prof. Nelson's lectures were pretty interesting but the class itself was so disorganized that it was very hard to gauge how well you were doing in the class. Her quiz times were at a sort of inconvenient time and some of the questions were never covered in the lecture. So it was sort of a hit or miss. Definitely wish the class went better with her.
She's always behind. Quizzes have material you didn't learn in her lectures, and seem easy, but then your grade is failing. She makes her single TA grade everything, so she doesn't allow anything late which SUCKS. Heads up, missing one assignment drops you a significant amount. She sounds like she hates her job. Literally take anyone except her.
The entire semester she was behind. The quizzes were always inconvenient (Saturday-Sunday). The TA has to grade everything so expect huge delays. The quiz questions were always confusing and unlike the material we learned in the lecture. Honestly stopped going after I realized there was no benefit to it.
By far the worst biology professor at UIC. She needs a reality check because this is not medical school. She would claim to try and "prepare us" for Med school when half the class isn't even going. On top of that, she's never clear about what should be studied for the exams and practicals. She is running this class like the Navy.
although there is no exams quizzes are just as hard and complex. Timing sucks on them you have a minute per question when some include math. You can barely read the question and understand it and you have to move on because time is running out. Takes off points off worksheets even though she solves that way on her lectures. Horrible.
she give short replies to emails which dont help that much, quizzes were okay, not the best though. She's very picking when grading assignments though, takes off major amount of points just for rounding an answer wrong. I would take her over Ashely tho cuz her class is less stress and less work.
Sadly, I am here to agree with everybody else. She was behind the whole semester, causing her to put multiple chapters in quizzes which made them harder (some questions weren't even covered in lecture). She comes to class ten minutes late, and a lot of the times homework was graded strictly. People don't show up to class and I get why they didnt.
There was a day where she scheduled a guest speaker the same day and time, we had extra time to work on our cat dissection and she got angry with our section... like maybe don't plan horribly because no one's going to be there. She's not an empath and doesn't care for any of her students. Quizzes are incredibly hard; you need 3 people helping.
She would waste time during lectures rambling about her research on iguanas and failed to teach anything. Missing ONE assignment can drop a letter grade if you're not careful. She seems incredibly annoyed by students and simply doesn't care. Still better than the other prof tho bc there's no exams with Nelson. Just use google for the online quizzes
Stay away if you can. Always late in class and does a horrible job teaching stuff. Quiz often has questions that were never covered in class or in powerpoints. Some of the questions in the quiz are vaguely written and difficult to interpret.
Try to avoid this professor. Very unprofessional/inappropriate on one occasion, where she spent all of one lecture class to discuss individual student grades (many, if not all, students were close to failing at the very beginning). She instructed all students to gather in a line (40+), and one by one, talked to each person about their grade.
No mercy
Unprofessional and does not care about students at all. Super rude.
Avoid this class if possible. The professor seems disorganized and unengaged, with quizzes that don't align with the material covered. However, unstuckstudy and other study tools can help navigate this challenging course.
I was a little taken back when choosing this professor due to the reviews. However the course was the complete opposite. I did every single assignment assigned, scored either A/B on the quiz's (also never went to class) and got an easy A. I don't mind the professor at all she's not as terrible as people make her out to be.
This course has been frustrating due to the professor's disorganization and poor communication. She focuses on irrelevant material, dismisses student questions, and doesn't respond to emails, leaving students unsupported. Overall, the course is stressful and lacks clear instruction.
This is one of those classes where I saw the negative comments and thought "it's probably like organic chemistry, everyone says it's bad but I did well". That is not the case for this class. It is very interesting but I would not recommend for anyone trying to keep a GPA (especially pre-professionals other than pre-vet), it is too much of a gamble.
Always late. You are only graded on quizzes and very few homework. Missing a single assignment will make your grade plummet. Very disorganized lectures. You will only learn your final grade letter, not the final percentage.
Run. Run. This prof TA is RUTHLESS, she will literally take so many points off the hw for no reason, like this is an elective class. Nelson would show up late every class and has extreme lack of empathy for students. Would often switch group activities around and wouldn't update the syllabus to reflect it resulting in loss of points
incredibly rude and not accommodating
Not accommodating to students at all, despite showing up 10 minutes late every class. Content is easy enough, but the material covered in the lecture is always weeks behind what is outlined on the syllabus. Would not take another class with her.
Your whole grade depends on only the problem sets and the weekly quizzes. Mess up on either one and your grade is severely impacted. The quizzes have questions that the lecture doesn't even cover. If it's 20 questions you only get 20 minutes and so on. Super behind schedule, unorganized, and just no. Avoid if possible.
She is absolutely terrible. I never want to see her again. Lecture will sound like a bunch of iguana stories and nothing actually useful. She doesn't go by syllabus and always falling behind. She would ask you questions on the quizzes that you wouldn't find anywhere in lectures or slides. She wouldn't give you extra credit except course evaluation

If you are not a religious person, pick a religion and start praying.
What they said 👇
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. Her quizzes (closed note) have absolutely NOTHING of what is on lectures/slide, plus the questions can be super specific where you will literally not know the answer no matter how much you study. We are only graded on quizzes and problem sets so mess one up and your grade is done for. DO NOT TAKE!!
Your entire grade is based solely on problem sets and weekly quizzes, which leaves little room to recover if you don't do well. The quizzes did not reflect the material covered in lectures or slides. She was frequently late to class. Overall, I had a very negative experience in this course and do not want to see her ever again.
While quizzes are closed note and online, they do not reflect the lecture material very well. Oftentimes quizzes have ultra specific questions or originate from the textbook which she expects students to read 80+ pages a week and in itself is far more in depth than the course. Almost always late to class and weeks behind in lectures.
