I think this teacher is great. He is recently retired from NASA, is an active astronomer who investigates the cosmos, and has a clear understanding of what is important in the field. No nonsense though, and just teaches without too much student involvement. His dry humor is hillarious.
Love the sense of humor. This is his first teaching position so as the semester progressed he worked with our comments to make his style more effective. Not the easiest class in the world but I certainly enjoyed myself. I would recommend him, but it will not be an easy A.
He is a very nice guy but he doesn't know how to teach. His tests are impossible because they are nothing like what he teaches you. You don't get much homework but he grades it hard, almost impossible to get and A.
He knows alot, but can't teach. If you want to learn alot take this class. If you want to get an easy A don't take it. You really have to know the material in order to get an A.
He taught astro physics in an intro class. all the work i needed help with at the tutoring center i was told was astro physics stuff. i attended all classes and did all the homework i could and only got a D+
This teacher is very smart and knows almost everything about Astronomy. If you go to class, take notes, and study, you will get an A. Homework is easy and right from the book. Grades on the curve, which helps your test scores. His study guides got more helpful as the semester went on. Learned a lot!
He is a very smart man with alot of knowledge on the stars and stuff up there, but not a great teacher. Just kinda a "open the hatch and cram it in" kinda teacher. Would recommend if you have a easy semster, but not if your just looking to get this class behind you.
i had to learn a lot on my own with the book. fast paced but he is merciful on tests. distract him with astronomy.
I didn't go to class very much but managed to get an A in the class. Mostly the lectures follow the books but if you aren't very good at physics class is important and yes the curve he grades on is extremely helpful. I think he just discovered a star.
He is very smart. It's trippy how much he knows about astronomy. If you go to class and pay attention you can learn a lot. It's cool 'cause you pretty much get out of it what you put into it.
BEST teacher to take for Astronomy. He has a cute sence of humor and loves what he does. Makes the subject interesting and posts notes from class on internet. Wants his students to succeed and is VERY helpful. I found a new love for astronomy and seriously considered changing my major. A little homework that he goes over in class. Tests not hard.
This class was super interesting! I didn't know anything about astronomy before this class, and afterward I was explaining all I learned to everyone I knew! This class is definitely worthwhile and I would absolutely recommend it.
just go to class, take the notes. The tests were easy, you just had to study. book work was a breeze, he didn't even grade it he just check to see if you did it. if you take this class don't buy the text book, just buy the work book. Highly reccommended class for an easy A
Dr. Haisch is AWESOME! He has a great sense of humor and kept the class laughing all semester. It definitely helps to be in class for lectures because he goes over everything you'll need for the test. I'm so much more interested in astronomy now and I'm taking another class from him next semester. Absolutely recommend him!
Dr. Haisch is awesome! I absolutely recommend him. He has a fun sense of humor and kept the class laughing all semester. It helps to be in class to get the lectures, and his tests are not difficult. We never used the text book but did have a workbook for homework. Definitely take astronomy from Karl!!
Haisch is seriously the MAN!! I absolutely LOVED this class!! He was by far the best Astro teacher at UVSC! He was ultra clear about things, and really knew his stuff! He went into great detail about awesome stuff! TAKE HIM NOW! I PROMISE He's worth it. Just do the little bit of work, and take good notes from his lectures, and you'll be fine!!

AWESOME!!!
This was the best class. He was very funny in the lectures and the homework, when there was some, could be done in 20 minutes. When there is homework he gives you a week to do it. No text book required. I loved this class. There was a lot of note taking but it wasn't bad only like a page every class. I would reccommend him to everyone.
This teacher rocks! He's really laid back. The only problem I had is that the tests were'nt what I expected from the lectures we got in class.
This teacher is great! He's laid back and he's willing to work with you, you just have to talk with him. You don't really ever use the text book so don't even buy it. Notes are very important! There is no homework, just notes and tests. The tests are a little hard, they weren't what I was expecting.
I took this class because I wanted an easy Biology class. It was great and interesting! You have to come to class every day for notes because he doesn't use a book at all. And he takes random attendance that counts towards your grade. If you study the study guide a couple days before the test you'll do fine. He curves it too! (but he doesn't tell y
Take dang good notes every single day! Ask questions and he will answer. He is incredibly smart and fair. Study hard for the tests. First test is the hardest. He also dropped a test this semester which helped.
Take astronomy from Prof.Haisch!Having known other students who didn't learn anything from the other astro.teachers (Lee/Powell), I was so glad I chose Haisch!Earlier comments describe class well-no homework, few tests(drops lowest),funny, educated man. Just show up to class, stay awake, take notes, study and you'll do fine.Seriously take this class!
Easy Good and Interesting Class. He is very nice and a very good teacher. You will get an A easy if you go to class and pay attention. Glad I took it
It might just be me but, i really dont like how his tests were set up. my class average was 58%(58% was my score on the test and i studied hard:( )he blamed for our scores, and actually got mad in class (it was kinda funny) But yeah i like that we only had one assignment (outline of the class) even though it was a pain in the ass!
This class was taught very well, As long as you go to class and take really good notes you will do fine on the tests. The day of the test he answers any questions you might have, so ask and he will answer!
Easy, easy, easy!It was really interesting too. You don't have to buy the book because he gives you everything you need to know for the tests in class. He gives you a study guide before each test and if you have a good grade at the end, you don't even have to take the final. Come to class and take notes and its an EASY A! Take it! He is awesome!
Professor Haisch is really entertaining and and fun to listen to. But, his tests are hard, they're written in what seemed to me, a different style of language then he speaks. Go to class and write down everything he says and shows on power point, that makes the class easier. Read the textbook too, and you'll be golden!
The class is all about lectures. its easy if you You just go and take the notes and get the study guide for the test. He really is pretty straight forward and not as boring as most would potray an astronomy teacher. Don't buy the workbook, its pointless and we used it twice the entire semester and it is nonreturnable.
continuing the comment below. the class is super easy
He's a smart dude, he really is. Worked with NASA and would have been an astronaut were it not for his eyesight (he's clearly bitter about this). His humor is a little dull and he's not a super-friendly or pleasant guy, and his class can be occasionally dull and tedious; it's slides every day and furious note-writing. Otherwise, the class was fine.
I loved his class. I didn't know how passionate I was about Astronomy until I took this class and now he has become a mentor to me. He loves participation and questions. He has a dry sense of humor which can give the impression that he is cocky but I think is because he is one smart cookie and doesn't know other way to come across. Love the guy!
He is the best teacher ever!! he is so passionate about astronomy and makes it fun!!! he was always making me laugh! he is willing to reteach something until you get it. he is the best ever!!!
There is a lot of information we had to cover in Calculus based Physics 1 but he did it well. We had a quiz once a week, which was a little stressful, but I feel that helped us to really study the material harder. He was also willing to meet with us in study groups and help us understand the concepts. I would really recommend this professor.
Good Class! It was the class I enjoyed most this semester. Tests could be hard but if you study you will do well
SUPER FUN! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH HE IS SUPER SMART ABOUT WHAT HE TEACHES AND I CAN TELL HE LOVES TO TEACH IT. YOU MUST ATTEND LECTURES TO GET NOTES BUT OVERALL IT IS A PRETTY GOOD CLASS. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR TO OTHERS. EXCITING CLASS AND VERY VERY ENJOYABLE. ONE OF MY FAVORITE CLASSES. TESTS ARE SOMEWHAT HARD, STUDY LOTS BEFORE HAND /REVIE
Way cool teacher. Uses Power point and videos. Makes astronomy and notes simple and easy to understand
It seems like he would be a great professor to a class more focused on Astronomy than Astrobiology. He would lecture, but he wouldn't prepare us for the tests, instead leaving it to us to study from the textbook and hope that we were studying correctly.
Dr Haisch is an AMAZING teacher. If taking Physics 1080, be prepared to do an outline of an entire book. If you don't think that you can keep up with it throughout the semester, don't take the class. He tells you everything that you need to know for the tests when he gives his lectures. You need to be there to get the full benefit though.
Dr. Haisch is very knowledgable, but his teaching style was not really for me. It could be though, that I am not particularly interested in Astrobiology. He is probably great for someone who is interested in such topics. I did not like that we had to outline the entire textbook, but I did learn a lot by doing so. He is clear with his expectations.
I really enjoyed the class. Everything is straight and crystal clear. He doesn't want anyone to have any problems with the class and he is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. You can really tell how much he enjoys it. Fun class and highly recommended.
Don't take this class unless you're already passionate about astrobiology. You have to outline an ENTIRE textbook. Sounds do-able, but the book is poorly written. Mine was about 150 pages single spaced and I still did not do well in the class. The concepts we learned were interesting, but trust me when I say you're not missing out on anything.
Karl is an amazing teacher! He is very thorough and specific with his lectures. Everything on the powerpoints is exactly what in on the test, along with things he points out. Take good notes, and know all the questions on the study guides and you will do great! I would definitely reccommend him.
He only grades you on TESTS. No attendance points, no homework, no quizzes, no extra credit, nothing... doesn't even provide a study guide. You have to read the entire book and memorize it. His lectures are so boring and he is really unclear. I took copious amounts of notes and none of them helped prepare me for the tests. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
4 Tests a Semester includes the final. He gives a quiz a week before the test he just won't tell you what day he plans on giving it -sometimes. The quiz only has 5 questions Gives HW on Pearson's MasteringAstronomy about 2-3 times a month Super comfy chairscouch Study guides has everything the test will have. drops lowest test score!!

Haisch is the best professor I had this semester. He assigns online homework that is easy to get extra credit on a few times a month. The questions on the test are directly his words in the lecture, so if you take notes you can easily get above a B. Plus, he drops your lowest test score. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would suggest showing up!
I have never taken a funnier teacher. This guy is great and makes learning the material easy as well as funny. His assignments are easy and assigns maybe 3 a month which are all online. He loves teaching and loves calling the stars sexy. Seriously, this guy is legendary!
Favorite class this semester! Dr. Haisch's sense of humor is dark, and kind of twisted, but things he said were so funny they'll stick with me forever. It's great to have someone who's worked for NASA teach you about Astronomy because of all the great first hand info. Amazing class, but concepts are a bit challenging. Study for tests! 9/10
I took this class this past semester and it was great. I did not like the fact that it had two teachers teaching it. Communication through canvas is disappointing. When I asked for a midterm grade I never received a message back with the grade. I would suggest taking it from a different teacher. no grades posted and only tests in the class.
Amazing class! Really made me fall in love with astronomy. UVU is super lucky to have him. The research he's done plus working for NASA really make him top notch. He's got the best sense of humor as well. Lectures were fascinating and not at all boring. We talked about aliens which was super cool to do in a university setting.
There's four tests a semester (with a quiz the week before) and he drops the lowest score. His lectures are crucial to passing the test, and I found the textbook to be helpful in understanding what he taught in class. His lectures are funny and entertaining! He will take the time to go over tests with you if you want to know what you missed.
Best teacher I've had. He breaks down ideas and concepts in a clear-cut way and doesn't try to trick you with confusing test questions. His lectures are so interesting and funny! It's an easy pass if you go to class and study for the tests.
Professor Haisch really cares about his students. If you put forth extra effort, so will he. Class tends to go by fast, even though the majority of it is him lecturing. He makes learning fun and takes interest and pride in his work. The tests are difficult though. It's hard to study for them, even with the study guide.
Difficult but awesome class, take notes every day. Do not forget online assignments! ALSO DO NOT BUY TEXTBOOK. You won't use it once. Not much homework except one online assignment per week-ish, but definitely do well on those and study for tests. The tests are tricky (in my opinion). He is passionate, quirky, and fun. I really enjoyed the class
Literally my favorite class thus far in my uvu career
He is a good professor but the class is kind of hard i a sense of being just a general it requires too much. He is funny and professional.
I happen to learn really well when teachers lecture with power points and lots of notes are to be taken. His style went really well with my way of learning and astronomy is generally a really fun subject anyway. I took his honor class but it didn't seem very difficult! You don't need a textbook but you do buy a pearson subscription online for HW.
Although the class is almost entirely lectures, he is engaging and explains his subject well. No textbook required but there is one available to read alongside the lecture. Not mandatory but showing up helps. No assignments, but several difficult tests. His part of the class is extremely interesting and his lectures aren't boring.
I loved this class. First of all, the subject is amazing. Second of all, Karl is a genius and gives really good lectures. Homework isn't at all hard. As long as you study for exams you'll pass. In fact, find other people to study with because it becomes more comprehensive like that.
He is a nice guy, but the class is really hard. His tests are nearly impossible! If you want an A don't take this class...I am an honors student and barely passed the class.
Overall a great professor. The class was well organized and everything on the test was stuff that he had gone over in class. He is a good teacher and has a lot of interesting information to share.
By far one of the best teachers I've ever had. I've never studied astronomy but he breaks it down and helps you understand astronomy in the simplest terms. His lectures are also very interesting and grab your attention. You will enjoy taking his class even if you don't plan on studying in the field of astronomy. 10/10 recommendation.
This class is amazing. His lectures are fascinating and he makes things easy to understand. I took this just for general credit but have found myself wanting to learn more. The tests/quizzes are all on notes taken in class rather than the textbook so attendance (while not mandatory) is important.
This class is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. I consider myself to be a great student but this class is not made for anybody looking for a fun class. Material is extremely difficult and every person in my class struggled except the people who are majoring in this field. Even with studying for hours, I didn't the grade that I deserved.
I am not going to lie, this class was so hard. I felt like I did average on the tests and I would study for hours. be prepared to study a lot if you want to pass this class. Although the teacher is super nice and funny, the lectures can be a lot. If you asks questions, he will answer everything. This class is really hard unless you LOVE astronomy.
Professor Haisch used to work for NASA and is very knowledgeable about all things astronomy. He is prepared with a presentation each class period and notes are clear cut and easy to take. The notes you take in class will be what you study in order to pass the tests which make up the majority of your grade. A tough class but very interesting.
This class was absolutely FASCINATING. I went to class almost every time and didn't need to use the textbook. You have to be a good note taker. He makes it very interesting and mind-blowing and is so funny. The tests are hard, but doable if you study.
I honestly have no idea why people are saying this class is hard. If you go to class and take notes on his slides, every quiz and test will be a BREEZE. I got an A by going to class, taking notes, and rereading them in the 5 min before class started whenever we had a test. The textbook is free and Karl doesn't even require us to read it.
Dr. Haisch is an awesome and passionate professor. Always willing to take extra time to answer questions and a wealth of knowledge, especially if you're intent is to study a branch of astronomy.
So Karl worked for NASA and knows what he's talking about. He's really passionate about what he does so that means he makes his lectures interesting. The only thing I don't like is he doesn't give test reviews or some canon way to tell you got all the notes down for the quiz or test. He has office hours however and is supportive to students.
Karl is an AMAZING professor! Attendance is not technically mandatory, but it is highly advised. You do not have to read the textbook, you're actually advised against it. However, this class is lecture heavy. Everything that is covered in class is fair game for tests/quizzes. SO BE IN CLASS! You are always given a heads up for tests/quizzes.
Karl is funny and super smart guy. He is very passionate about astronomy; although, he forgets that this is a general class. He makes this class 2x harder than it needs to be. He does not give any reviews for the test nor review in class. Better take good notes or you will not pass the test. Also, goes way to fast when presenting his slides.
He never gave a study guide, and will phrase some of the questions on the tests in a way that you won't recognize them, even if you studied the material. He's a great guy, but he grades harsh, and his tests can be confusing.
Shes the best teacher ove ever had
I would not recommend him to anyone! It was the worst class I have taken. He doesn't post grades on canvas. He posts them every once in a awhile in files. The tests and quizzes are 85% of your grade. I had 10 people in my class get D's and another 10 with E's. He is just the worse
He was by far one of my favorite professors. He was really fun and really knew what he was talking about. If you don't come to class you definatly wont pass, but his lectures are really entertaining and interesting.
You do not use the textbook. All you need to know is in the lectures, so TAKE GOOD NOTES!!! Attendance is not graded but you will not pass if you are not there. Prof Haisch is such a great professor, so passionate about what he does. I loved this course so much and would definitely take it again. Not math heavy at all.
Love karl. His class was absolutely fascinating. You definitely have to take notes, & what he says in the lectures is what the tests are on. His lectures are very interesting. It is a decently hard class & sometimes hard to wrap your brain around everything. He set aside a day before the test to go over any material we didn't understand. Funny guy
I just think his class in really neat. I am studying astronomy, or physics rather, but I think this class is really easy if you simply attend class, and take notes. He will tell you major things to take notes on too, that he says will be on the test. One of my favorite classes and professors.
I personally loved Karl, his class was very interesting. He isn't monotone so it was really easy to listen to lectures and take notes. He is very clear on what is going to be on the test and makes sure everyone knows what they are doing. If you have the chance to take Astronomy from him, DO IT!!
Dr. Haisch is the worst professor I've ever had. If you missed the live streams, you probably failed the class. He never posted grades in Canvas, just on a document in files. He only updated them after tests. He never reminded you homework was due, and never answered the emails I would send him.
I didn't use the textbook once. The lectures are everything he puts on the tests. He also put out study guides for them. I actually enjoyed going to class and I was interested by the course information. Good lecturer.
I loved this class, besides the difficulty. I think Professor Haisch is an amazing Astronomy teacher! I love to be in his lectures and if you have questions, he gives great answers and insights. The only thing negative I have to say is that he didnt respond to a couple of my emails. And with COVID, it was difficult to understand the online links.
Pro. Haisch is a great teacher. He worked for NASA so he really knows his stuff. The material is thoroughly interesting. Each class he teaches from a PowerPoint. He gives out HW assignments about twice a month. As long as you take good notes in the class you should be able to easily pass the exams.
This was my FAVORITE class this semester! Karl's lectures are AMAZING! He really made this subject easy to understand and a joy to learn about. He gives out assignments very sparingly. Take good notes in his lectures and you will get through the exams easily! I would recommend him as a teacher to anyone!
I'd say he's one of the worst professors I have had to learn from. No matter how communicative I was with him he would just tell me if I didn't do well that's too bad. The tests and the reviews barely line up at all. The best grade I have gotten on a test after days of studying was in the low 70's.
Attend and take notes on the lectures and you'll pass-attendance wasn't taken but is essential if you want to pass. He doesn't keep canvas/grading & calendar systems updated so you'll have to remember to do the assignments, which are few but easy to forget. Overall it was the easiest class I took by far. Just make sure to STUDY the lectures!!
Professor Haisch is an absolutely great instructor. Accessible, knowledgeable, capable lecturer with clear concise information. He is passionate about astrophysics and it shows in how he presents the material. I completely enjoyed his class, despite my struggle with the math, and I would certainly recommend him.
Literally the hardest class I have ever taken. No matter how hard I studied I would still fail the tests. The questions on the test are so specific and are worded weirdly. He gives you review questions for the tests but it only ends up being helpful on like 1 question which sucks because the tests are a big chunk of your grade.
Haisch was a great teacher and I learned a lot from him. Great lectures, but make sure you go to class. There are homework, quizzes, and tests but he gives very helpful study guides. He really knows his stuff you should definitely take him if you can. One thing is he's not super organized, so hard to know your grade and slow to respond to emails.
This class was my first B ever. I studied so hard & did the best I could, and at the end of the day it won't matter unless you've already taken an Astronomy course. He puts grades in once every other month, doesn't offer any extra credit, and the quizzes and tests are password protected, so if you can't make it to class that day, you get a zero.
I enjoyed learning in this class, but it was difficult! You have to be in class and take accurate notes and study hard if you want to do well. As far as I know, the highest grade was a B+. It is mostly memorizing facts from the lectures and stuff, but the grading is very test-heavy, so you have to nail those. He is a good teacher overall though.
Haisch doesn't answer emails and communication is awful. The homework site he uses is confusing. He doesn't do makeups with homework, quizzes, or exams. He doesn't use the canvas grading system so you don't know what your grade is till the final grade at the end of the semester. Save yourself the stress and go with a different professor!
Doesn't use canvas, rather a third-party website. The only reminder you get is from his announcements in class. This makes the homework easy to forget; this would be solved if he just used canvas like every other professor. Every test is closed note, even though it's a gen-ed class. Save the stress and take the class with a different professor.
Dr. Haisch is great! He doesn't take attendance, but being there for his lectures is the only way you'll pass the class. If you take good notes the quizzes and tests aren't too hard. I didn't like the third party website he used for homework, and he doesn't use canvas. His lectures were entertaining and overall I liked the class.
If you're looking for an interactive environment that promotes learning, then his classroom isn't it. Your whole grade rides on tests and quizzes, and the only way to boost your grade is to practically memorize his lectures. Definitely not worth it for a GE. Take something else!
Attendance isn't mandatory, but so long as you show up to class, you'll pass easily. He knows his stuff and albeit lecture-heavy, but he also makes cool use of the observatory projector. My fav GE by far, and I can really honestly only reiterate that so long as you show up to class, you'll pass. Those who didn't attend suffered.
