Smart and down to earth. A really good guy
Humerous and enjoyable. Makes class fun.
very approachable and easygoing, knows his stuff

A good teacher and nice man..Enjoyed his class alot
my best prof yet, exellent teacher, so friendly
take his class if you're interested in archaeology! He's the BEST!!
reminds me of indiana jones... and a vey good teacher too
is a pretty good guy, this class is good if you like archaeology but beware arts students-prepare for alot of science related material in this course...plus a 10-16 page essay for this class..
he was a friendly and enthusisastic teacher, the only problem i had with him was when i missed one class becuase a grandparent parent died and he would let me make up the mark other then that he knows his stuff
WAY too much info to know. Lectures are unclear and he wanders. B/c he goes off on a tangent about other stuff. Info he gives is so similiar to otehr stuff he says,eg different periods in time, hard to keep them straight.

I really liked Karl becuase he gives clear notes, everything you need to know is on his powerpoint, if you write it down, exams are nice and easy.
He is a very boring, monotone, and horrible man. He couldn't make the class information interesting if his life depended on it! He picks favorites and doesn't offer help. There's a huge essay to write that he doesn't mark fairly. I DO NOT recommend him at all!!
I would not take another class taught by him. His notes were all over the place and his marking was unfair. He is passionate about what he does but because he knows what he teaches he jumps around too much and makes it too difficult for the beginner to understand and actually absorb. I was dissapointed.
Despite the hard marking and the intimidating term paper (keeping in mind i haven't yet got the mark for it from this semester) I loved him as a teacher! He was very inspiring and helpful, He seems like a good guy to just sit and chat with, and he's been to lots of cool places so he's got neat stories for topics. I am taking 119 with him next s
Great teacher! He's like being taught by Indie himself :) Really interesting subject matter too. Attend class all the time and an A+ is in the bag. Really passionate about what he teaches. He goes off on tangents but they are always interesting. He is definately in the running for my fav prof.
After four years of school I'd like to think I know what to expect from for certain levels of courses. For a second year course this is ridiculously hard. He seems like a nice guy but terrible teacher at this level. He also tries to fit so much information into this course that you are ALWAYS rushed and cramming information in.
I took both the 119 and 216 courses, the 119 class is easy if you attend each class and take good notes. I'd recommend a laptop for any of his classes as there is a lot of info given quickly. Karl is an excellent teacher, if his 216 class was hard it was only b/c he was trying you for upper levels. One of the best teachers I've had.
This course can be tough at times but as long as you attend the lectures and seminars it's fine. There's a lot of information to remember so you have to either be a fast-writer or have a laptop.
Karl is an awesome teacher. He is always passionate about what he teaches. He is very approachable and is always willing to help. His grading on papers is tough but it prepares you well for uppper level courses. He is very clear in his marking and his critism is always very constructive.
Karl is approachable, and nice enough man. However he is the definition of the lazy prof his powerpoint notes are old and need updating, he shows too many crappy movies in seminar to fill time, and his exams are all multiple choice...not to mention they are tricky with more than one good answer on every question.
Karl is a really nice guy, very approachable and doesn't make you feel uncomfortable. HOWEVER, as a second year class, it's ridiculously hard, his "quizzes" very hard, he gives minimal info on the research paper/proposal and isn't clear on expectations AT ALL. I most definitely will be prepared for upper level courses, providing I pass.
Nice, funny, helpful teacher. Tests are very difficult because there's so much information..nearly impossible! Don't miss class because you take notes the full 2 hours and would miss tons, but seminar you just watch movies.
took this class with no prior experience in archaeology as is permitted and found his class extremely difficult. tests are on a timed slideshow not allowing revision and final paper does not have clear directions on what quality is expected. although enjoyed the content, i found the class required effort above and beyond the other 200 level classes
He is an awesome prof...very interested in what he teaches. He has so many interesting facts and stories which I thought made class interesting. Seminar assignments needed only to be handed in to gain full marks, and his midterm and final were not bad at all, at least 40% of the questions could have been answered without even coming to class.
Because of the size of the class (100+), he gives 3 multiple chocie exams as the only assignments. And those exams are VERY hard. He doesn't "cheat" - the info is all in the book and lectures, but even he will tell you that he basically expects you to know everything. On the plus side, this course is very interesting.
The class is very interesting, but he's a brutal marker. He's a nice guy, but clear as mud. Don't take 2 of his classes at the same time. You'll live to regret that decision.
BRUITAL, HARD, UNHELPFUL, AVOID AT ALL COST - YOU WILL SUFFER GREATLEY AS HIS CLASSES ARE IMPOSSIBLE, AND HE IS VERY UNHELPFUL
While hes a great lecturer and made the course really interesting, outside of class its like talking to a wall. A really awkward wall. The exams contain questions on small details, so study hard! As well, he has no reservations about knocking you down an entire grade on assignments for a few mistakes.
His lectures are very interesting, but he does jump around alot which can make following him rather difficult. He is an extremely hard marker and marked papers as though this were a 3rd or 4th year class... NOT a 2nd year class with no pre-req's. He is not very approachable, but I would take more of his classes.
so hard! never miss a class! does not explain assignments at all!!
Horribly hard marker. Always do above and beyond what he expects on assignments otherwise you will never get an A. I did a perfect paper (he said so himself) but because I did not go "above and beyond" and only followed his instructions, I was given a B+. Quizzes are almost impossible to do well one. Must know everything.
I found him extremely interesting and inspiring, and helpful out of class, although a bit less focused in the real world :P Nice guy who really got me into archaeology.
Not an easy class but very interesting! He's very passionate about his subject and it's infectious. Don't take this class if you plan on missing any classes or can't make studying a priority. TONS of notes. There are multiple choice tests but you really need to know your stuff. As long as you put in the effort, you'll pass.
Karl seems nice, he trys his best to make his students like him and enjoy the class, he tends to ramble on and get of topic very easily I would avoid taking this class if you are not prepared for hard tests and dont study enough, you really need to know EVERYTHING that has been covered and DO not miss any classes as you will suffer.
Nice guy, tends to go off topic alot.. MUST ATTEND CLASS. Lots of notes, As he does not use printable power points. His tests are not hard, but they are set in PowerPoint presentation so you must know all material as you cannot go back and check or change answers.
Passionate about the subject, but not a great prof. Unclear about expectations, hard marker. Often taught us things immediately AFTER testing us on them. In a 3 hour lecture he only ever gave us a single 5 minute break per class. A nice enough guy, the subject matter is interesting, but all things considered, I wouldn't take his class again.
by far most interesting prof I had in 4 yrs of uni. expects students to go to class and study but you learn A LOT in his courses and really get moneys worth. enthusiasim is infectious - made me want to be archaeologist! very knowlegable, very helpful, I always look forward to class. Lots of reading, but interesting, tests challenging, but fair
Frustrating. The textbook readings assigned never had any relevance to the lecture notes, and when asked he didn't seem to know himself what he was going to test us on.
worst first year class i have ever taken. He fell behind in his teachings and quizzed us on stuff he hadnt even covered until after the test. gives one 5 minute break in his 3 hour lectures and a horribly hard marker. i thought it was interesting in the beginning so i stuck it out. i wish i hadnt. i will never again take a class with karl.
The course is interesting and he seems nice enough, but he expects a lot from a first year class. Takes a full letter grade off of assignments for one mistake, isn't clear on what he expects, and quizzes you on the smallest details. He got behind in his teachings and then told us he'll be quizzing us on five chapters we never covered in class.
If you want to lower your GPA, take a class with Karl. He's obviously passionate about his field but he is an insanely hard marker and very unfair with his tests and assignments. I would not recommend taking a class with him.
Karl tests from both his notes and the textbook, so make sure you show up to class. I found the material interesting, but it was hard to sit in the clock tower for three hours while constantly writing. Tests are all multiple choice and could be finished quicker if they weren't on powerpoint. Some tricky questions, but nothing too hard.
He is brutal to understand. Karl is full of himself and makes a three hour lecture difficult to sit through. He ensures you understand how amazing he is, but if you care about your grades get out quick!
I took ARCH 1190 with him, he wastes too much of the class time rambling about himself and goes off topic. His website for the class is rarely updated and doesn't provide any information on what is important to study. Very unprofessional, my advice is that you should avoid his class.
Karl is an extremely unfair marker. I had to complain to the chairman about one of my assignments. The average mark for the last midterm we were given back was a failing grade. I really recommend not taking his class. :) I regret it.
First years should not take this course. He treats like its a 3rd year course. His quizes are really tough and will usually will go off topic in his lectures. I recommend his course to people who want a challange.
I took this last year and found this subject to be extremely interesting. The assignments are meant to prepare you for work in upper level classes rather than enforcing what is being taught (which seemed fairly pointless at the time). The tests were multiple choice and detailed, but it is possible to do very well if you pay attention.
This teacher had very interesting lectures but when it came to the tests im not even sure where her got the material from! none of it was from the book or lectures i swear he just googled something prior. i am a student with a GPA of 3.9 and i got a C+ in this class... i've been in school 3 years and can honestly say one of my worst teachers so far
Nice guy, funny, and helpful. The difficulty is the length of classes when paired with lecture-style, which is slide upon slide of similar pages with repetitive schemes for each phase of each civilization. You have to memorize because you don't remember. Essay grading and quiz questions are brutal, designed to catch things you missed.
Karl knows that people try to take it just as an easy elective so he makes it as difficult as possible. I'm an A student and received a C in class not because I didn't attend or try but because his exams are all up in the air; you never know what he's putting on or what material you should focus on. Do yourself a favour and don't take it.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! all it is good for is to lower your GPA.... He teaches based on what he finds on google and his highschool notes from 57349 years ago, then tests you on completely different stuff. He never stops talking about himself and makes the class very very BORING. point of the matter is... SAVE YOURSELF and your GPA by not taking this class!
He makes class interesting and shows lots of passion for his field, I didn't know that he was such a hard maker, his expectations are insane. However if you study and take your time looking over his requirements you will get a fair mark. He also is more then willing to help if you ask for assistance.
His lectures are really interesting, sometimes too long though. Thought it would be an easy course, but would never imagined he was such a tough grader. If you want to pass his exams, study hard! Only going to lectures won't prepare you.
He is a professor who is very passionate about his field. However, he expects students to write at a 3rd or 4th year level. And it is technically a second year course, but with no prerequisites. The hardest grading professor I have ever had. I received all A's for my english classes, but for his course I am passing by a hair.
A lot of content! His notes can be a little all over the place. Textbook helps for clarity.
Tests and quizzes were extremely difficult to study for. Very hard marker considering he doesn't give students any idea what his expectations are. I was so excited to take an archaeology course, now not so much...
Karl is what I would call a special breed of boring. He was enthusiastic in his own way and he really was just an introverted teacher in my opinion. You can tell that this is something he is excited about, but he isn't good at making you feel the same about the topic. Very boring and drawn out classes. Nice guy, boring class, can't study for tests.
Karl was an awesome professor. This class made me want to major in archaeology. His tests are easy multiple choice and he's super funny. Would recommend!
This class was so interesting. Karl is funny, relaxed and does talk a lot about his career, but I think he is trying to demonstrate to students that there are careers in the field. I think he wants to inspire students to pursue these careers. One criticism: he's not good at explaining concepts differently if you're struggling the first time around.
Great teacher :) Karl showed me that it's possible to be Indiana Jones if you really, really try
Karl goes too in depth about minor concepts. He has cool stories, but I find his classes to be boring at times. We were two weeks behind in the first month of class - which wasn't all bad - there was less testable material so the exams were very easy. If you can sit through sometimes boring lectures it's an easy A
He's got to be on of the worst teachers at TRU. I would avoid taking his classes....
Karl was an overall good professor. Never had any issues, and its obvious he cares about Archaeology and just wants you to be into it to. Never goes out of his way to connect to his students, so if you don't want to go to class you don't have to, but you will probably fail the tests then.
Loves what he teaches
Karl is a great prof, he is very passionate about the course content and makes it enjoyable. His tests are very detail-oriented, so it is important you keep up with readings and pay attention/take notes in lecture.
Do not expect to take this as easy credits or an easy elective. Showing up every day won't guarantee you a good mark. Lots of information in each lecture and can't assume you will know whats on the test. He is very passionate but doesn't seem to care about the students too much. Would only suggest taking his courses if you have an amazing memory.
Karl is super nice and funny in an old guy way. No final in this class, instead there are 4 non-cumulative exams. If you're looking to take an ARCH course for the science credit take Karl.
Very very dry. I should have dropped out when I had the chance, this course is difficult and so much info is thrown at you. His lectures are long and you will take a lot of notes, you'll most likely get hand cramps because he goes through the slides fairly fast.. there are also labs that you HAVE to show up for! if you skip lectures, you're SOL
He is fine, but a lazy professor. He basically just reads off of the slides but you need to show up for class as he doesn't put them online. He also filled lab time with long videos, so he didn't have to teach. You need to take a lot of notes in class, but his lectures are interesting .
If you like archaeology then you should be okay, but if you don't good luck. Karl is super in to what he does but is very dry and its a lot of reading and writing. the tests are hard and not great as there the only things you are graded on. you have to go to class to pass as he going though a lot in class and its a must to read the textbook.
Does not use moodle so you have no idea what your grade is EVER. Boring. He tells you straight yup you're going to fail the test. His test are about in class lectures but he's very quiet and doesn't explain things at all.
Karl is one of those professors who is lazy, and does not care if his students succeed. The best interests of his students are not at heart as he does not want to go the extra mile to help. He is NOT on moodle, so you dont even know your grade in this course... and tests are unclear and extremely difficult. Regret thinking this was a GPA booster.
Karl is definitely super interested in archaeology, and it shows in his lectures. Unfortunately I was not as interested in archaeology as I thought I was, and this made the course very very difficult. Around 80% of the marks was based solely off of the tests, and lots is covered in the lectures. Get ready to take LOTS of notes if you take his class
Dr. Hutchings's ARCH 1110 class is comprised of exams only (of which there are 4 total). There are no assignments or papers. I personally like this about his class, but others may not. The textbook and lectures cover the same material, which is refreshing and helps drive the important points. Dr. Hutchings is a friendly, respectable teacher.
Karl is funny and dedicated to archaeology, but hes kind of really old school. He does not post the slides and his exams are times for less than 1min/question. Hes a boring lecturer and I wouldnt take another one of his classes :(
Super nice with lots of interesting stories. Very passionate about archaeology. Be prepared to take lots of notes but as long as you pay attention and read the textbook you should do fine. 4 non cumulative test which is really nice
Karl is passionate and clearly knowledgeable about the subject matter. Lecture-heavy, no posted lectures on moodle, and online readings are given. For grading, there are 4 exams, and one short essay, there is no extra credit. I would suggest going above and beyond on the essay if you wish to receive an ok grade.
While he is very knowledgeable and passionate, he isn't the best professor. Lecture can be a little dry and his tests are tough but not unmanageable. It was irritating that he could not keep his pace with lectures and due to his lack of time management, he posted two additional lectures to complete outside of class time which was irritating.
His lectures were boring and he often goes on tangents that take up 20 mins of class time. Be prepared to watch video lectures a day before the exam because he “didn't have time to teach it”. Karl if you don't have time to teach the information it shouldn't go on the exam.
Karl's lectures can be a little boring ,but if you show up to class and just take as many notes as possible the class is easy. He does assign some lengthy videos to watch as he didn't have time to teach them, which I don't think he should be testing students on. He has a great attitude towards his craft though, and he does try to make it as fun.
His tests were very confusing, and could be pretty hard, but they were all online. You need to go to every lecture, because he doesn't post slides or anything. He was funny, and his lectures were interesting, but if you don't care about the material it would be difficult to pay attention. Also managed an A- without reading the textbook
the best thing about him is that he's passionate about archeology. it makes the class interesting. notes are mandatory and lectures do not get posted online. 4 online mc tests that you do on your own time (in bed) that make up your grade. he's very friendly and very intelligent. loved the material and loved his excitement for teaching. 10/10
Loved his classes. As long as you take lots of notes during lectures you'll do well on tests. He is easy to follow and very knowledgeable.
The professor did not take attendance, but it was important to show up to his lectures in order to take notes. He frequently engaged with the class as well and made the lectures enjoyable, and not once did I find myself bored. Would take his classes again
I loved him! as a first year this is a nice class to take all you do is take notes and watch videos and you do learn a lot of cool stuff, and have only 4 test and its on Moodle which is nice so your not very stressed. he's funny and pretty organized.
Karl is an awesome prof! He's super passionate about his field and it shows through his lectures. Pay attention during class and take notes as there was 4 tests on moodle done at your own pace. So the more material you have the better. Would definitely take his class again!
