He expects a lot from students but thats a good thing. He is very enthusiastic about the material he teaches which keeps class interesting.
Karl Oswald is the man!!! BOOYAH! He's going bald though and his nephew is better than him at everything...
Dr. Oswald is an incredible man. His stories about how he kicks he nephew's ass at everything are hilarious (as well as informative, interesting, applicable, and relevant). He's the best!

honestly... this teacher is like a child and if you look at the other reviews they dont really explain him at all.. i think he should grow up a little.. tries to be that 'hardcore' teacher but just cant pull if off. total loser. ive never had a teacher so annoying. too many personal things in class.. i can learn from him. classmates said the same.

Best professor ever.
Dr. Oswald is the best professor ever, I agree with whoever said that. He is my role model because he is both brilliant and cool.
Wonderful teacher.
Passionate about material- yes. Does it mean I have to like him- not at all.
Freakin Oswald is the best! He is super hard...only in that he expects a lot from his students. But if you pay attention and try, then you will get so much out of his class. I loved him so much!
Dr. Oswald is awesome
I liked Oswald when I took his Adolescent Psych course and I thought he was wonderful. When I had him in class for Cognitive, he was an arrogant jerk who made it a point to tell us daily that we were doing his work incorrectly, even though his directions were poor and not clear. Plus, he always did it with a smile on his face. It was his first time teaching that specific class, so I cut him a little slack, but he refused to consider that our mistakes might be because of his teaching. I now despise him.
Wonderful teacher! I took him twice, Cognitive Psych and Methods. Both great classes. He is tough, but you learn a lot!
Dr. Oswald is the most unprofessional, egotistical, discourage, and **** professor I ever met in my life. If you want to fail a course and be little by him at any time, take any of his courses. I belief that the privilege he has at Fresno State is too big for him because of his lack of professionalism and personality. AWFUL PROFESSOR!!!
Dr. Oswald is tough but really cares. The other comments here don't match my experience. You should check out the comments on ****.
The WORSt ever!
Dr Oswald is a tough one. If your lazy, a crybaby, or don't like doing work then don't take his class. He requires ALOT of work and his tests are EXTREMELY hard regardless if you study or not. Its possible to pass his class as long as you devote at least most of your life to it. You learn a lot and I think he's a great teacher if you come to learn.
As he puts it, he challanges you just enough. This is a 5 unit class, so it is A LOT of work. He is very helpful, reviews a lot. Tests are extremely tough, lots of summaries due each week. Lots of reading. Attendance is required because of all the gorup discussions each class session. Great professor though.
your grade is based on 12-1000 word summaries, 10-coglabs,2midterms,cumulative final exam, and literature review. You have many opportunities for extra credit.Test cover EVERYTHING in the ch. covered. He's anal about everything and admits it, he doesn't get back to emails and it is very hard to see him during office hrs. I wouldn't take him again...
Dr. Oswald is a great professor but expect to work... HARD. There's a reason it's a 5 unit class. He is arrogant & doesn't often admit he's wrong but you will learn the material if you apply yourself. If you plan on going to grad school you MUST learn it or you're sunk. Tests are hard but can get an A if you study. He will help you, just ask.
Very good Professor. Expect to work.. hard. There's a reason it's a 5 unit class. He is arrogant & doesn't often admit when he's wrong but he will help you if you ask. You will learn if you apply yourself. If you're going to grad school you MUST learn it or you're sunk. Tests are hard but if you study you can get an A.
Expect a lot of work in his class and the exams are hard!
He is a very organized teacher, but there are too much work. He also grades really hard. This class is exhausting and the tests are hard and extremely LONG! You will learn a lot but it'll be hard to get an A. I would not take his class ever again, and I would not recommend him at all.
AWSOME professor. There's a lot of work but it's a 5 unit course and if you do all of it you barely have to study for the exams. He does group discussions which are very helpful. He is very approachable. If you want to learn something and learn it well take this course. You'll thank him when your going through other psych courses. NO textbook.
Dr. Oswald is a great guy, outside of class. He is somewhat intimidating and if you ask something hes already gone over, or make a mistake he can be a bit harsh. I learned a lot but I would never take another course from him again. His tests are stupid hard and the 1000 word summaries every week are a pain.
Dr.Oswald is a really good guy. This is not the easiest course so if you are not willing to work hard to get a good grade don't take it. Book is really nice, it is online so you do not have to buy it. He is very entertaining makes class fun.He grades hard but offers extra credit so don't worry
Awesome professor. Kind of hard but great class. I learned A LOT.
In hindsight, I kind of wish he failed me, instead I got a "C" which leaves me stuck in the middle - that may be good or bad, who knows. I guess it is really teaching me a lesson since my grades after that is better than a B. I do believe that he cares deeply about his subject and he happened to remember my name. I wouldn't take him again, though.
Awesome prof! Loved this class. Very helpful.
Dr. Oswald is amazing! He understands teaching and knows exactly how to maximize learning. I have never learned so much from a class that I did from his. He is passionated about the subject and makes the lectures fun and interesting. It is a lot of work but if you come to class regularly and do the work you will have no problem passing the class.
1) Really handsome. 2) Don't take this class if you have a large class load. He assigns A LOT of work. I did more work for his class than my other 4 classes combined. I wouldn't take him again, but he is nice, knows his stuff, and expects you to work...HARD.
Currently taking this class. There is a lot of work and the exams are challenging, but he is reasonable and all of it contributes to helping students walk away from the class having really learned the material. If cognitive psych interests you, he has a lot of experience in the field and is excellent at teaching it.
Amazing professor, one of my favorites. You will work hard but it is doable. You will learn a lot :). If you need help be sure to go to his office hours, he is very helpful. I highly recommend you don’t miss class or a lab. Gives out extra credit and is known to end up grading on a curve. Don’t buy the book.I earned an A, by the way :)
Outstanding professor who is very excited about his subject and uses the things you learn about cognition to teach the material. A ton of work with weekly chapter summaries: you will need the book! And he loves clicker questions so you will have to come to class. But you will learn a lot and the material is extremely interesting. Recommended.
If you are a psych major, you have to take a course from Oswald before you graduate! He is an amazing professor and person! If you need help, stop by his office early in the semester. Prepare to work hard, read the entire text, LEARN, and have a great time! Attendance is crucial. Tests are supper long. Earning an A is very possible, I did :)!
A LOT of READINGS! Weekly writing assignments about each reading (usually 2-5 readings per week, each is 7-15 pages long). Attendance is mandatory. He strongly dislike it when people sleep or text in class. He remembers your name. He's helpful if you ask. Tests are multiple choice and short essay questions. A lot of work but you learn. Have fun. :)
Oswald is the best psych professor hands down. His class is not easy by any means. But it is very easy to pass with an A. He has you read the book, do a summary, and take a quiz every week. There are daily iClicker questions so attendance is mandatory. He does give out extra credit. He makes the class super fun and his stories are funny. Awesome.
This class was the hardest class I took as an undergrad but I really enjoyed it. Oswald is very honest about the difficulty of the class and is there if you need help. Expect to know everything he talks about and be ready to work for your grade. I learned more in this class than any other one i've taken and I would recommend it to any psych major.
This is honestly the worst class that I have ever taken. This professor alone made me want to drop out of college. He is not helpful at all, he does not respond to emails, and if you ask a question in class he just says "read the syllabus". He is not encouraging. There is a ton of work and he is a tough grader I would avoid this professorr
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Does absolutely NOTHING to help you pass his class. Will NOT respond to emails. Gives you the most condescending, sarcastic answers when you ask questions. Thinks just because he has tenure he can do whatever he wants. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Yes it is a difficult class but Oswald does NOTHING to help you out. Never taking him again.
Clarity is very low and when you ask a question he is very rude about it. I asked for help and he was condescending that made me not want to ask for help ever again. I clicker points are crucial. Test are tough so make friends and study. The research project seems hard but you have the option to be by yourself. soooo be by yourself!
Okay, I feel like Dr. Oswald gets talk bad by students because he makes you work for your grade. We have always had prof that give sympathy to out excuses. He doesn't. Yes, he has his doctorates and he makes you know he does, but he honestly just wants you to want to get engaged in your education. For that I respect him. Tough, but respectable.
Really interesting class, posts lectures online. Weekly quizzes, summary of chapter in your own words, and discussion board for hwork. Had to go to campus testing center for tests (TOUGH TESTS!). Has material on tests exclusively from lecture, so be sure to watch them. Two term papers. Probably one of the best online classes I have taken.
Two exams, one final, ten summaries, four short papers, and group evaluations. This class was probably the hardest thing I've taken throughout my undergrad. He is all over the place with material, no clear structure, and he literally takes the whole semester to grade anything. No study guide was ever given for the comprehensive final :(
He puts you into groups but the seating isn't assigned there was a lot of time wasted getting into groups. Don't expect to take traditional notes because a lot of the material is visual or demos. Read the book or fail the class. The tests and quizzes are extremely book heavy.
If you are going to school and working, this online class can really be a challenge. I usually get off of work at 3pm but sometimes my manager unexpectedly makes me stay until 5-6pm and that is when most assignments are due. It would be considerate if he made the due date 12pm like most classes, because 5 pm is such a busy time for most people.
Dr. Oswald was an awesome professor. One of the harder classes I've taken in my years at Fresno State but I learned so much. Lots of work but 100% worth it.
Dr. Oswald is great! I work full time and am also a full time student, so his online course fit perfectly into my schedule. Not going to lie, it was ALOT of work and very challenging, but I learned a lot. Use his office hours! I went in there for a quick question and left with a full advising appointment and graduate school advice. 10/10!
SO MUCH WORK. If you are considering adding this to a already heavy schedule, stop now. 60% required on final, or you automatically fail the class. Tests do NOT accurately cover book material and lecture, but rather are twists on basic concepts in his own words. If you don't understand the definitions, you will fail. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE HIS TESTS.
Dr. Oswald is a great professor. His lectures are very clear to understand. Always be in class because you earn participation points through the IClickers. Most Fridays you get off but have an online part to do that involves readings and videos and taking a quiz. I would like to have him as a professor again.
Good professor the class isn't too bad 2tests 1final (comprehensive) about 10 quizzes and an essay a part of the WRC (writing and research) component. There's no class Friday's, instead there is a quiz based on the assigned readings(online so you can use notes) Good class, not hard to pass if you actually try. Attendance thru iClickers so show up!
His lectures are interesting. There are summaries for most of the chapters, a pg and a half length. The work load is a lot. Stay on top of watching lectures. Just as hard or harder than taking it in person. This is not an easy online class.
Real interactive with the class and gives great lectures !
Professor Oswald was fun and interesting when it came to his lectures. His tests were super challenging and most of the time his lectures were not helpful. Gives you a "study guide" for final exam, but only 5/310948 terms actually showed up on test.
Oswald definitely makes you work for your grade. Chapter summaries for pretty much every chapter. One paper. 2 Exams and 1 Final (comprehensive). DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE HIS EXAMS!! This class is tough and he is hard to get ahold of.. I would not recommend taking him. Lecture videos are youtube videos from his in class lectures (some are really long)
This class involves a lot of studying and reading and theres only 2 tests and many quizzes. He provides the book for you for free though. If you get a good grade in the WRC section, it will help your overall grade a lot. He will kick you out of class if youre on your phone. His lectures are really thorough though and helpful so dont miss class!
This class was very challenging. Lots of reading and information. Exams are based on his lectures and readings. Showing up to class will give you a huge amount of points towards your grade.
You better not be on your phone in his classes. Great professor. Very interactive with students. Psych 10 is a tough class but make sure you get him as your professor and you will pass. Also, ALWAYS compliment his ties.
Easy points for attending class. DO NOT be on your phone, sleep, or wear headphones. He will kick you out. Exams are multiple choice. Textbook is free. Friday's are usually online.
Most straight forward professor EVER. Online class on Friday because there is a quiz almost every Friday. Does not stray from the syllabus and does not cancel class. Not the most caring but interesting lectures.
Dr. Oswald's lectures are probably the best lectures I've ever experienced. He breaks down the material very well and he makes it very interesting. The class itself is hard. There are 3 tests overall that account for more than half your grade in the class. HW every week (not too hard). Attendance is mandatory and counts for points. Just study hard!
Amazing teacher, do not take it online. It seems tempting because most online courses are, but it is not worth it. You have to do way more work than if you take it in person. Plus his best stuff is from the lectures so it is way better just to take it in person.
Professor Oswald is a good instructor, with interesting lectures and entertaining stories that connect to each individual lecture. There were two tests and one final (comprehensive), that were quite simple as long as you study. Dr. Oswald does not give a study guide for every test, so you should review your notes and slides to make your own.
(6 wk sum. web) Very smart & interesting prof! One of the hardest classes I've taken due to the work load & course length (assig. due at 5pm). Material is very interesting. MUST read everything in the book & PAY ATTEN. to lectures. Exams are difficult but fair. Summer course is same as norm. sem. Gives good feedback. Must do work, reading & vid lec
Dr. Oswald is an amazing professor. Often times a professor will simply present the information unenthusiastically. But when Dr. Oswald lectures his eyes light up and you can tell he is genuinely passionate about what he is teaching and that makes it so much easier to learn the material. He's a great professor and an awesome psychologist.
I took the online class and it was a lot of work: reading the chapters, writing chapter summaries, watching 1.5-2hr lecture videos, posting on discussion boards. It was a lot of work for a very easy class. Oswald did a good job engaging the class; concepts are easy to understand; just a lot of work.
Prof.'s gets F too! It's nothing personal, it's just super unnecessary for the work to be so hard.
His tests are based primarily on lecture material. TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING HE SAYS. Stuff that he says in lecture that you think is just an example or a story will end up on the test. His class is easy no homework, class is online on fridays, weekly quiz, 2 tests, 3rd is the final that is comprehensive, take notes and study you'll do good
Listen here, this class if really hard. I would not recommend taking this if you are a Freshmen. You have to show up to class or you are not going to pass any exams. Warning as well, there is a second part attached to this class which is a reading and writing component and you have to pass that to Psych. Professor is alright though.
Dr. Oswald makes his lectures interesting and breaks down the information. However, taking his class was a mistake I made!! im a freshman and this class is too much for me and most of your grade is based of the 3 exams you have. theres no chance for you to build up your grade or any extra credit. does not offer study guides. not an easy A class.
Dr. Oswald makes class so very interesting! His workload can be very heavy but it is nothing I could not handle. Class consists of 3 exams, 4 short papers, 10 summaries and a presentation of 5 minutes. The work was a lot but it is doable! He is so passionate in and that only made me pay attention more. A great professor!!
If youre not ready to work, dont take this class. Its easy if you actually apply yourself. Instead of class, there are quizzes every Friday. WRC portion of class is a free 200 points if you do well on your first essays and take the surveys ASAP because they run out. Class is 200+ people, so be quick! Not a class you can pass if you dont study!
If you're looking for an easy GE course, this isn't it! 2 midterms and 1 final mainly based off the lectures. The concepts on the lectures are not hard to understand and can be interesting and fun, you just need to remember key concepts for the tests. He can come up to be as a bit rude, but just don't give him a reason to kick you out of class.
His class is hard no doubt about it. But if you show up, read the textbook (free), and pay attention you should do very well. You just have to know how to study and also recommend going to see him in his office hours which is a lot of help. His lectures are also very good, in-depth and clear. I Clicker needed for this course.
Dr. Oswald's lectures are so interesting that sometimes I forget I'm in class. His tests are based mostly on lectures (not txtbk). Make sure you attend lectures bc he takes attendance through clickers. Even though his exams are based on lecture, his daily online quizzes are based on the reading. Overall, great prof, great class!
He loves Psychology! It was one of my harder classes, but you just need to put a lot of effort into studying his material. Focus on his powerpoints, not the book. His tests were hard, but passable. He takes attendance everyday, easy points! Don't slack on it! Last test was cumulative, so go in and take notes on your past tests! Similar questions!!!
great professor although he did not give extra credit. test are hard. if you want to pass his class read the book & take notes in class. I clicker needed. Very strict on phone use in class. DO NOT fall asleep in his class, he will put you on blast in front of the whole class!!! This class also has a writing component to it which is the WRC
Okay professor. Hes very willing to answer questions you have and thorough on his lectures so if youre a good note taker youll be fine on the exams. I stopped reading the textbook because I got lazy and used quizlet to help me with terms that he didnt cover to get me through exams. Dont get scared about the WRC stuff its really easy.
Oswald is very passionate about Psychology & pretty strict. You have to take a quiz every week, 2 midterms, and a comprehensive final. The quizzes and tests are based mostly off the book, but also lecture. You have to also really study for the tests. Also with his class you have to write an essay and do research credits.
Oswald's class is always interesting because he's passionate. Class is passable if you really put your time into it. Super strict about electronics. He will kick you out if you're sleepy, talking, or on your devices. He claims his exams are hard but as long as you study using his techniques, exams are passable. This class is not be taken lightly.
Dont make the same mistake I made by not going to class. He takes role twice with the iclickers. Hes a very good teacher, BUT he is really strict about no tech, talking in class and email format. He has kicked people out. Sometimes we didnt have class on Fridays and instead an online quiz. Tests are difficult because theres a lot of material.
Dr. Oswald knows his material very well. He explains it good for your understanding. His exams are based on his lectures, you will have quizzes on the chapters every friday (most questions are on quiz-let). DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE/LAPTOP or HAVE ANY HEADPHONES OR EARBUDS. DO NOT FALL ASLEEP or TALK TO YOUR FRIENS DURING LECTURE. HE will kick you out
Two midterms, one final. Final is cumulative. He holds study sessions for the final and you get to review both midterms and take notes. Lecture heavy, but midterms and final are mostly based off lectures. WRC is part of the class. It basically is 9 research credits and one essay. He's a funny guy, but no electronics in class REGARDLESS.
I studied for hours/days and got a C on the first exam, a B on the second and a C on the final. His lectures are super interesting but the exams are difficult. There are no extra credit opportunities. You'll get kicked out for falling asleep or being on any electronics or talking. 18 units this semester and this class was my only B, the rest, As.
I took this class in the summer online... if you don't pass the final with a 55% you won't pass the class regardless of the points you have earned. He is a good teacher, he wants you to pass. He gives good feedback. One final paper due at the end. He doesn't care about excuses (emergencies only) do the work and don't forget about the due dates.
Oswald has a strict "no-phone" policy and HE WILL KICK YOU OUT. The tests are lecture heavy, so as long as you come to class, take good notes, and study you should be fine. There's one essay and you have to fill out 9 research credits (which isn't too bad).
I took the class online because Im always sick I have a chronic health issue. However the final had to be taken in the testing center. I was in the hospital the night before and did poorly I failed the final thus he failed me in the class. I showed him the documentation and did not care. So if you know you're always sick avoid his class.
He's like your very typical professor, very average. Tests are VERY hard, & even if you think you know stuff well you can end up with a 75 or 80 on exams. Funny guy who uplifts the class, but you really need to pay attention & GO TO CLASS. Doing so makes the class much easier, bc tests are everything. DO NOT SLEEP OR HAVE YOUR PHONE OUT.
Going into the class I was worried because it isnt recommended for freshmen. However, if you put in the work, you can easily pass. Weekly quizzes on the textbook, about 20 Qs. WRC, essay and research credits. There were three exams, mainly on the lectures. They were tough so pay attention and study! If you need extra help go to his office hours.
Dr. Oswald is BY FAR one of the best professors I've had thus far at Fresno State! He is very kind and eager to help his students. He's passionate about what he teaches and it shows! I'm so glad I took his class this semester! His class is NOT as hard as it seems. Explains concepts very well. I encourage everyone to take this class.
Good professor-- organized and straightforward. Strict on phones and will kick you out if he sees it. He assigns weekly readings, which is the foundation of his lectures, but he doesn't use all of the concepts in the book. Half the class is independent work, like the WRC and the online quizzes. Overall, it's a manageable class if you're diligent.
AMAZING teacher, he makes material interesting and does take attendance by using a clicker. His class is test heavy consists of 4 tests and if you dont study for them you will not pass, all his tests are lecture heavy so dont skip class, but he does post the slides on canvas. Loved his class, super caring professor!!
Workload isn't bad BUT exams are VERY HARD and LONG. You have to watch his video lectures to pass the course and you have to take notes on his video lectures. No study guides and he creates the exams himself which he says come from the lectures BUT the exams are much more in depth so just watching his video lectures is NOT enough to pass the exams.
Honestly, this class is amazing, its lectures heavy but his lectures are very interesting and fun. The textbook is free, and most materials are in the textbook, but the lecture helps clears things up. The quizzes are hard, so make sure you study for it. You do have an essay to write, so make sure you are ready for that.
Requires way too much work compared to other 4 unit psych courses iv taken. I did more writing for his course than for a writing course i took. Does not provide study guides and the exams are externally long and hard. Nothing against him personally as he does seem like nice guy.
Dr. Oswald is passionate in his profession, unfortunately his class structure is far from straight forward. He is an extremely tough grader, everything about this class including his lectures felt scatter ed and disorganized. High maintenance class requirements, with little reward in learning. AVOID IF YOU CAN, save it for a professor w/ pay off
There's a difference in setting up your class to work hard, and going out of your way to work against your students. Everything about his lectures and the way he talks to his students felt like he had something to prove. My hardest and most frustrating class leaving state. :(
I loved Oswald! Hes really passionate about teaching psychology and cares about his students. Responds to emails quickly. Textbook is free (homework can get stressful sometimes). Lectures are really interesting. Need iClicker for participation. You really need to know the material to pass the exams but its not hard.
this is by far the worst class I have ever taken in my whole entire educational career. if you can avoid taking him I would strongly recommend it. theres not enough words in the world to describe how much I disliked him and this class. lectures are boring, he forces group work so you have to go to class. the hw is dumb. good luck, it sucks.
Hard class. Gives tons of readings each week and there are so many papers. Tough grader also. The topics covered are interesting. Would take another professor if possible.
There was a LOT of work for this class. Taking this class with others will be difficult. Professor is disorganized/a tough grader. He has high expectations but assignment guides lack detail on what he wants. Exams are also difficult. Final is cumulative. Consists of 3 exams, lots of reading assignments, 4 short papers, and a presentation. Beware
The most difficult class I've taken by far. 4 "short" papers. 3 exams that are cumulative. Lots of (mostly dense) readings due before the week begins. Participation in class transitioned to discussions online. Take another topic course unless you want to work your ass off to aim for a B.
Considering that this semester was mostly taken online Dr. Oswald did a good job at catering to this his students needs. There are weekly homework assignments (relatively easy), 4 exams, WRC paper, and weekly reading. You need to know the concepts of psychology in order to pass the exams. You will need an iclicker since it counts for participation.
He designs the class so that if you arent a psych expert youre going to struggle very much. He gives way too much information and then compiles it into a giant test. You have no idea where to begin to study because theres just so much. Ive been a 3.5 student and this has been the hardest class.
You fail the final, you fail the whole course. Its unfair that you can have an A in that class and then fail the final and he fails you for the entire course. Although he is Good professor when it comes to lecture, he isnt understanding when it comes to difficult situations.
Do not take this class unless you want a C or worse, or take this class in person. Dr. Oswald does not know how to run a virtual class and mandates that the class Zoom's for exams. I have never had a professor that appears to deliberately try to fail students until Oswald. He is extremely strict and will not cave on anything.
The weekly summaries are graded very strictly and most of it isn't graded until the end of the semester. So ways to improve your summaries so that you won't make the same mistake is impossible. There are no study guides until the final exam and if you don't get more than 55% on the final you fail. Avoid his class if you are not up for the workload.
The good reviews consist of his intro 10 psych class for freshmen. Not a very difficult class. Look closer though and youll see the negative reviews are for every other class he has, the ones youll need to graduate. He takes forever to return grades and feedback. This class amounts to two course-loads of work with bad grading. Take psych 10 only
Challenging classes can really be rewarding and meaningful, and can also help prepare you for graduate school. That is not the experience you will get with Dr. Oswald's classes. He has decent lectures, but that does not make up for the way the class is structured and graded. Good luck getting feedback in a timely matter, unless it was from the TA.
READ THIS before signing up for his class. You will be halfway through the semester remembering this message and regretting not listening, I am literally trying to save you. He sets up his course so students fail with very specific unreasonable rules, does not help or budge at all. Im a senior, hardest class Ive had yet. Youve been warned.
Don't take this class. Honestly, you've been warned. Pick this class and you're set up for failure. Worst professor ever.
I'm a straight A student, but was damn near close to failing this class. I know what you're thinking, "I pass hard classes all the time. These students must stink". NO. Even in this time of COVID, he had no understanding of personal situations, and it is so easy to fail. Also VERY quick to accuse cheating/"plagiarism". Please take someone else.
Four words: Get ready to work!
Do NOT take Dr. Oswald if you are only going to put in minimal effort. Have a solid study routine and pay attention to studying techniques he offers! They will be accommodating for exams. Exams are lecture heavy so take detailed notes when he is instructing! Material is dense, but he does a great job teaching it nonetheless. Don't miss lecture!
He was an alright professor but he was very strict when it came to exams. He required exams to be both on lockdown browser and on zoom call recording your desk area and face. If you plan to take him for PSYCH 10 you'll have to take time to study the lectures, dont waste time on the textbook.
PSYCH10 my freshman year first semester, and honestly hes a solid reason why Im pursuing a minor in psychology. The tests are lecture heavy and you HAVE TO go to lectures, but the lectures themselves are super interesting and you wont get bored easily. The material is highly applicable, and he has study tips that are really helpful.
The course material is very interesting and engaging. Also, his teaching style is very comprehensible. however, he is very strict, exams are hard, he is very insensitive to the dynamic of student's lives, and ironically for a psychologist, seems to have passive aggressive qualities. Lastly, the work demand for studying was unreasonable.
ok so theres a lot of reviews i hope yall see this and RUN he makes his test so you fail they are online and you can take it over but like he keeps the most recent score so if you score high and then try again and score low he keeps that I swear save yourself time and tears and dont take this mans class ever. RUN! DROP HIM BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!
This is the worst professor that anyone could possibly have. He doesn't care about his students. He's rude, hateful, mean, careless, and disrespectful. He purposefully makes sure that his students receive no grade higher than a C. He contradicts himself and lies. Do NOT take this class. DROP it. You WILL fail this class and he will NOT help you.
Very interesting. A LOT of work. Lecture based tests. Easy if you study and understand material. Dont take if youre going to put in minimal effort and want to pass without working for it. Took asynchronous online. Read textbook before lectures, makes it easier. I have a solid A (2/3 of semester). Not unbearable/super hard. You can do it!
Cool topics, but disorganized lectures and class. Unclear on essay and assignment expectations, but will score you harshly for not meeting said guidelines. Most importantly though, Dr. Oswald doesnt speak to his students with respect. Please spare yourself the head ache. Hes not just a tough professor, hes just down right rude.
I think a lot of his classes are structured similarly so its important someone takes the time to address the fact that Dr. Oswald is demeaning towards his students. I hope that it gets called to attention. Avoid this professor to avoid disrespect.
He does minimal work while expecting a lot from us. Instead of 1 typed post + 1 resp for weekly disc boards, we record 3 video posts + 2 video resp. He gives weekly textbook summaries, but if we quote or paraphrase the book, its a 0. It's very easy to paraphrase on accident, which causes much stress. Made class online last minute out of laziness.
He is a cool dude but this definitely has to be one of the hardest classes I have taken while being a student here at Fresno mainly because cheating is not possible lol. I took him for Winter session thankfully but it was very hard because we had to do a semesters worth of work in 3 weeks. Im glad I got it out the way quickly. Learned a lot too!!!
He is a harsh professor, he knows this and he is PROUD of it. He would read these bad reviews and think were just weak or lazy students. He reminds me of sensei John Kreese. If you fail the final, you fail the whole class, no matter your overall grade. This class will end up hurting your other classes because of how much time this class takes up.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! He grades super hard and he will make sure you fail. He only gave a study guide for the final exam but overall all his exams were so difficult. This class was asynchronous so I found it difficult to even learn anything because there were no class meetings. We had to watch lecture videos on our own time.
He grades remarkable tough and he will make certain you fail. He most effective gave a have a look at manual for the very last exam but overall all his exams were so difficult. This magnificence turned into asynchronous so I discovered it tough to even examine something because there had been no class conferences.
Would not recommend for people who aren't motivated to go to every class. I didn't attend like half of the lectures and that brought my grade down a lotttt. The exams and quizzes have questions that aren't really gone over during lectures so make sure you don't just study what is on the lectures. Exams have 60 questions & Final has 100 questions.
He the hardest professor l, there only exams and Bacially if you fail the final you fail the class.
This professor is by far the worst. He keeps saying that the exams are based on the lecture it is not it is based on the reading and videos he puts up as well as part of the lecture. He does get off track from teaching the class by talking about different things. He uses iClicker for attendance and YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS. DO NOT GET HIS CLASS!!!
He's a great lecturer. All you have to do is be a good student. I feel like he gets bad rep because of his phone policy. This isn't high school anymore. You actually have to pay attention to get a good grade.
He is a hard professor and a heavy grader if you fail the final you fail the class. It's really hard to pick up your grade and he doesn't offer extra credit. You must attend class everyday As for him he often would go over his scheduled time and would get distracted with other conversations and would start talking about himself.
He is a great lecturer, but his tests are very very difficult. Tests are based off lectures, but a lot of questions came from the book as well. You need to be able to read the chapters to help understand his lectures. You have to really dedicate time for this class in order to get a good grade. Offered a lot of extra credit too!
You will be stressed out!! If you still have time to drop the course do it if you already have a class that is a lot of work. You must pass exams with 50% to pass the course and you must use a webcam on exams. Quizzes are all on the textbook but exams are on lectures. This will require most of your time during the semester.
Definitely a difficult course, but interesting topic. I would just say this class pulls no punches. Might not always be nice, but the guy doesn't deserve insults.
doesn't allow any electronics to be used in class. Psych10 was such an interesting and fun class to take. not much homework although there is weekly quizzes on canvas regarding chapters of the book. the quizzes aren't hard just make sure to pay attention and turn in all the assignments. Make sure to take his studying advice! Helped me a lot.
Dr. Oswald is an extremely entertaining professor. As long as you show up, do your job, and don't ever pull out your phone, he's great. He makes Psychology extremely intriguing and you will laugh 3-5 times a lecture at some of his sarcasm. He's also an extremely intelligent person. Great choice taking Psych 10 with him.
Dr. Oswald is a man of his word. He sticks to the syllabus and has clear expectations for his students. This class is very fast paced, so make sure to attend as much as possible. A word of advice: make time to meet with him outside of class to ask more questions. He is more than willing to answer any questions you have and help you succeed.
quick to accuse cheating even if you really arent. took him for 6-week summer session. quiz every week and had to do discussion boards where you have to record yourself and talk. exams were 200 points worth with 80 questions online. you definitely need to read the textbook in order to understand his lectures and also be able to pass the exams.
Attendance is mandatory and electronics are not allowed. We used iclickers to show that we were in that class. He made the lecture very engaging!! The exams are lecture-based and there are no study guides except for the final.
Took for a winter class and is only 3 weeks so he needs a better class structure. Lectures about needing space in between studying but class set up in a way needing to spend 8 hours every single day on this class (says this in the syllabus) did not retain information at all, easily accuses of cheating, won't learn anything, you just lose hair lol
I loved Dr. Oswald, his lectures were interesting and he explained everything well. He gives you effective study information and there was little to no homework. His tests are all lecture based. Overall my favorite professor at Fresno state!
Dr. Oswald is not a terrible professor, but I wouldn't take him again. No electronics in class, even iPads and computers. Not accessible over canvas email. I went to every class to earn my grade with iclicker points.
People complain that no electronics are allowed but I think that's better. Smart teacher.
Great
Great class
I learned so much! Awesome lectures. Dr. Oswald really cares and will help if you are struggling.
Dr. Oswald is a tough grader but its because he gives excellent feedback, is always willing to answer questions, and has very entertaining lectures that I have become so interested in Psychology.
Professor Oswald is tough but fair. I found that you get what you put into the class and I ended up learning a lot. Honestly, he is so cool, it's hard to believe he's so old. But not old in a bad way, more of a, "lead singer of Dexy's Midnight Runners" way. In fact, he's so hot, he might actually be the reason for global warming. Two thumbs up.
Awesome professor. Very engaging, I learned a lot.
I read all the negative reviews about Dr. Oswald, and noticed a few common threads: - He's a hard grader - Requires that you attend class - Doesn't like it when you cheat on tests - Makes you put your phone away during class I hate psych, but I took this class as a protest against all the lazy, ignorant, cheating, social media-addicted losers.
Very professional, with lots style, and clear communication.
Dr. Oswald is amazing! I learned so much. He's super smart and explains the concepts really clearly. One of the best professors I've ever had!
AVOID HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE COMING IN FROM HIGH SCHOOL. Dr Oswald tries to be funny but is not his lectures are boring with a lot of information he has a phone policy that you are not allowed to use during his lecture I got kicked out of his for checking the time. He takes attendance using an iclicker Avoid if possible look for another professor.
If you don't read directions and need someone to hold your hand, don't take this class. Be prepared to take notes during lectures and read the assigned chapters, like in any other college course. If you do the work, you will pass the exams. The class was dedicated to one of the professor's late friends and is full of interesting psych material!
Good professor.
Make sure to attend the lectures, almost all of the material on the test is from the lectures.
Professor Oswald is tough but fair. His lectures are engaging, and I found Unstuck AI really helpful for study prep alongside the textbook. Attendance is mandatory, but the effort pays off.
Took Oswald for Summer. Very structured and clear expectations, but very strict and not lenient. Lots of coursework.
Do not take this professor. He doesn't allow technology except for students with it in their accommodations. He sends spies into his lectures to point out to him who is on their phone and calls the person out in front of the class. His lectures ramble on and on, with very little content about what we are studying. His tests are difficult.
Going through these reviews lies a common theme- he doesn't allow phones, he's a tough grader, and yes that is true, but it just strikes me as immature and lazy individuals who don't realize he isn't teaching a class so you can be on your phones the whole time. Soak in what he's teaching and its quite interesting.
Dr. Oswald is not a professor you want to take for this class. It is a 3-unit class and he treats it like a 5-unit class. His exams are in the testing center. There are no electronics allowed in his class. There are honestly better professors out there. The low ratings are true professors earn their ratings for a reason. Avoid him if possible
I really enjoyed this class, Dr. Oswald knows what he's talking about and when i took it as long as your study the material from the lectures, you will pass the tests. He did have a curve at the end of the semesters, and he dropped questions from the tests that he thought were unfair. Class was very organized and clear, would take again.
Everything was well organized. He does not allow phones and attendance is mandatory. The exams were a little hard but he drops many questions and applies a big curve at the end of the class. People who do not do well in the class simply do not try. He cares about his students but is a little strict.
Avoid this class....take someone else. He's more concerned about controlling every little thing in the class than teaching you. He's condecending and treets students like children. I worked hard in the class to get my grade but its almost like he wants students to fail so he can brag about how hard his class is. not recommended at all!
Overall a solid professor but brings political ideologies into his class and accredits himself because "he's traveled there," and "does his research," when in fact he does not do his research because he forgets that there are students like me who have also traveled there and does their research. Weird.
I took his class during the summer. It was my second attempt taking Psych 128 and he made it more difficult than my first time taking the class. Avoid him at all costs if it is online and the summer, I spent 3-5 hours A DAY watching lectures and studying. I am unsure of how he is in-person but based of his lecture videos he did not seem pleasant.
Very good explainer of topics. You all just have to put in the work and comprehend.
The other reviews complaining about this professor are complaining about being in a college class. Expectations are high because he expects his students to act like college-aged students. The exams are based on his lectures, and he's a personable professor. I would 100% recommend him to people who are serious about being in college.
Throughout my years of college, even if you are serious about school, this professor is just not it. I feel like he bribes students for a 5/5 rating because there is no way he's near that. You can work hard all semester long, but if you fail the final, you fail the class... he has a no phone policy. Please just avoid. He's not worth the stress.
This professor is extremely strict gives a huge work load lots of lectures, book chapters and then activity worksheet on top of it all to complete to show that lecture videos were watched and then discussion boards that are due every 3/4 days.
I would not suggest this class if you don't have time it has prerecorded lectures videos so they are extremely long along with chapter readings He has activity sheets you complete along with lectures and his discussion board you post a video of what you learned and respond to someone else, if u upload more the same day it doesn't get credit.
“I took him years ago, and he'll probably love the bad rating. He'll almost certainly tout it in the first class meeting to show how ‘difficult' he is. And don't forget—he went to Duke, and you must call him Doctor. Please, please, please call him Doctor.”
