Very nice pro-student instructor. Took Playwriting for two semsters.Had a blast and learned a great about the craft. Has a sense of humor albeit a dry one which suits him quite well.
Didn't learn much in class-kind of stupid material covered. But Sherlock is a great guy to hang out with
When I entered his class the first day he struck me as the type of teacher you would see in a CS Lewis novel. He is a great instructor...very clear and consice, and very helpful.
Professor Sherlock is by far the best teacher I have had. I took his "Views on Death and Dying in Literature" and the subject is incredibily interesting and seriously, I haven't laughed like that in a class ever. I learned a great deal from him.
Just and all around great teacher. A pleasure to listen to and VERY Dapper dresser! Great times and good discusions

Took Views of Death and Dying and had a great time! Fascinating topic, great discussions and Sherlock was a riot! Take the class for an easy A (if you read and participate in class)- no test, just writing and a major project at semester's end.
EASY A!!!!!!Excellent teacher! I don't think I will ever have an instructor like him. Take your essays to him before class and he will correct them for you before officially grading them -- a lot of extra credit too.
I had fun in this English class. Mr. Sherlock is an intelligent professor and I would recommend him to a friend any day!
Very interesting instructor, but a very hard grader. Prof. Sherlock is very intelligent and easy to listen to. Discussions in class were very entertaining and fun.
Prof Sherlock graded you hard but fair. He was very clear and concise and you will learn a lot in his class. Very enjoyable class. A must take class.
Definitely not an easy class, but there is potential to do well if you pay attention. Lot's of essay's, but you have plenty of time to get them edited and re-written. He is a good teacher. I would definetely reccomend his class.
I was absolutely giddy to take this class. Mr Sherlock is a good teacher but likes profound subjects. If you write on something profound you will get an A. His reading list is very good also he's very interesting and class dicussion is worth it so read the books.
Mr. Sherlock is a tough instructor. He is a hard grader and expects a great amount of work from his students. He can be mean and condescending, especially to women! With all the bad said, he has made me a better writer from explaining and commenting on all errors.
He was not fair, refused to talk about my paper, He did not agree with my topic i chose to write about so he almost failed me. I am a great writer and he was completely unfair. He thinks he's brilliant and funny- anyhting but!!!!!!!!!!
Not only a very well taught and laid out class, but the guy is very admirable/caring. I had a difficult end of the semester due to illness, and he had gone out of his way to help me out. Yeah he's harder than the other joke professors in the dept, but he's gearing you up for UCSD/SDSU/USD. Thanks!
In all sincerity, Sherlock is really an unbelievably bright guy. His teaching and technical skills are better than those of any English professor I've encountered while at Boston U, RPI, Mesa and UCSD. Don't be mistaken, he will challenge you, but only to make you a better writer. Sign up for him!
Not a fave. Nice guy but boring. Best: class qualifies for two GE areas, Bad: Everyone else in the class took it because they want to intuitive writers. Everything has a special meaning, Can’t help that I am a literal person, if reviews says take as C/NC and save your GPA, That is what you should do. Don't worry about feeling dumb, most did. Not s
Professor is admirably intelligent and easy to learn from. Yes, he challenges you and the work is not always easy, but is that not the point of furthering your education? He grades fairly and actually reads everything you turn in. I wrote about some crazy topics and he freely gave his opinion without prejudice. Not to mention, he is totally HOT!!

Class wasn't what I expected, but still kinda cool. Interesting teacher, guest speakers are boring as hell though
great teacher and great guy. Take him!

If you're SMART, easy-going, and a liberal (thinker; not politically), Karl Sherlock is the teacher for you. My favorite, though I doubt I'm his. He doesn't pick favorites. He simply appreciates people who speak in his classes. Imagine that! I would argue that teaching is a game to him -- he was serious regardless of personal strife.
Not at all hot.. and will kick you out of the class for not buying the book that is rarely used. Rude and makes a face when asked for help. An essay per week and if he is absent he will cram an extra essay in. Practically the whole class dropped. Not a very open minded guy and expects way too much from a learning student. He also checks your w
This teacher only wants the best for his students. He is extremely helpful and understanding. I believe that if your not willing to come prepared for class then it his obligation to kick you out. The course may only be hard for you if you dont study and I believe that Professor Sherlock is a living man who teaches well.
Class=very repetitive and boring. Sherlock=nice guy.
hes a nice guy, just dont let him catch you sleeping or not taking notes. take lots of notes! lots of group work. his class is boring and hard to sit through beacuse its not all that interesting, he knows its not that interesting. if you come unprepared he may make you leave. he will come after you if you leave class early without telling him. hes
he is a horrable teacher. i reccomed someone else other than him for a teacher
Karl's class is challenging, but worth it. He's by no means easy, and forces you to think for yourself. Some people can't handle it, but I respect him immensely. Yes, there will be a lot of reading. Yes, there will be essays. The tests are really tough. But if you're intelligent, interested and literate, you'll leave his class feeling INSPIRED!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken! Five research papers that start off at 5 pages and make their way to 20, and an outline for each! Also, an oral presentation and a lot of reading. Although I did end up with an A, it wasn't easily acheived! If you're at all conservative, don't tell him! If you're at all liberal, he is more so!!!!
I took his Death and Dying class and it was great. He is really nice and stretches your mind like crazy. But uses a lot of big words. Lots of existential thinking. LOTS of reading and only really 2 assigments which were not too hard. Very interesting class, lots of group discussion (you dont HAVE to talk but its part of your grade). Fun to take.
Returned to college after being out for 25 years - two years ago. This professor's poise and demeanor still positively influences me to this day. My oververbose & redundant writing style needed a checkup, but he recognised that I was searching for my voice, and tactfully guided me with sincere comments on all papers. An inspiratioanal role model.
Engaging and interesting teacher. He will get on a student who seems to be slacking. Karl works hard and the students respect his devotion to the craft. I do.
Sherlock is amazing. Take Views of Death and Dying in literature! I was so interested in everything we talked about. I had almost no interest in what the class was about, and simply took it for units. I turned out more than pleasantly surprised, and the themes and topics we discussed in class have influenced my thoughts in a personal way.
This class was too difficult. I thought I would learn about would I would need for my next level writing course. However, it seemed that professor Sherlock would rather be teaching critical thinking (we had a paper on the difference between motivation and inspiration.)Our tests were on material not covered in class or just skimmed over.COME PREPARED
Horrible teacher, I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. He is a walking contradiction! He will say to not write certain words in your paper but yet he does it in his example paper. I regret taking his class. I should have listen to the comment prior to this one. He does not prepare you for your next English Class. Don't take his class you'll regret it
Sherlock is not bad. Class time is devoted solely to group discussions. He hasn't really taught anything so far this semester. You don't have to read the text to contribute to discussions...just wait 20 min and he'll summarize the readings for you.
Prof. Sherlock always challenges me to think about things I normally wouldn't. It's true, he's a little hard to follow sometimes, but he truly has in-depth knowledge on his subject and a sense of humor to boot! His death and dying class I took last semester was an eye-opener.
This guy is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy 2 hard... he makes u write papers all tha tyme... dont git down wit diss cat...u digg?
Karl is a teacher who expects you to work. If you don't like working, don't take him. If you actually want to walk away with something from your Eng class take him. If you're lazy, don't take him. He's rather challenging. However, he is an excellent professor and I would recommend him to anyone taking their education seriously.
Horrible teacher he says he teaches a 124 class (or something)as well and he teaches u like u r in his 124 class...he expects u to kno how to write big papers..its an english fundamentals that is y we r in that class not a class to write stupid papers
Advice first: READ or you won't understand the lecture or be able to participate in class, which is a huge chunk of the grade. PARTICIPATE. I'll admit that it took me awhile to warm up to him, but he genuinely cares about what he is teaching and makes the material interesting. He is an easy grader if you actually try. I would take him again!
This professor is one of the best I've ever had, if not the best. He knows how to facilitate an active discussion, and to ask questions that compel you to really think. It was an amazing experience, and I wish all teachers could be as motivating and inspiring to students. Take Views of Death and Dying.
LOVES to listen to himself talk and uses the biggest and most complex words to say the simplest things. He seems completely pompous BUT... I have never learned so much in one class in my life! I've never worked as hard as I had to in his class, but I LEARNED. I'd recommend him, but if you take his classes, you will WORK!!!
I've never worked so hard for a "B" in my life! I cried and stressed out SOO much over this class. I would seriously feel like I had to take a #2 before going.. But in the end.. It was the best experience I've ever had. I learned so much about myself as a person, a student, a teacher and a writer. If you want to better yourself..TAKE HIM!!!!
Very intelligent person yet he sorta needs to calm down with the papers he expects us to write, they are very strenuous and very time consuming. I enjoyed listening to his lectures and I learned incredibly so much about writing from him, but this teacher was pretty difficult
this class was exactly what i expected, a crash course in eng and sherlock is a really thorough instructor. class is hard and fast paced, probably wouldnt recommend it for students fresh out of h.s. and lazy cause there is a lot of work, but i WOULD recommend for everyone else.
my advice to you is don't take this guy, he makes everything very complicated and he is pretty hard, it's very difficult to understand him, take my words and stay away from him.
Not impressed with this teacher at all. I?m really good at English too, but I couldn?t handle him. First teacher that was so boring I fulfilled the cliche & fell asleep in class for the first time in my life!! Does nothing to maintain your interest or confidence. Demands u buy lots of expensive books? books are part of school, but this was nuts.
The prompts for his essays were essays within themselves. I would not recommend taking this guy. He seems to expect us to know everything he does. The problem is we are only 120 students, and he has been through extensive schooling for English. Also, it feels like more of a philosophy class. By mid-semester 75% of the class has already dropped.
I really apperciated his class. He as a teacher is excellent, i liked that he gave you independence but at the same time guidance with essays. His prompts are fair and without his teaching efforts i doubt i would have passed my further english courses. I would recommend him to anyone who needs the extra kick! fair grader: very understanding
I personally liked him, but he has some quirks in his classroom. He uses $20 words all the time. He does allow a lot of independence. He is very helpful if you seek it. Very knowledgeable about the subject. If a person just came out of high school, don't take him. When you do take him, TALK TO HIM. Very fast so pay attention.
students who are international or ESL, I advise u to not taking his class cuz u will waste ur time and drop it at the end. he is verrrrrrrrry incomprehensible even the perfect native students get C or D. I am saying the truth trust me
Very knowledgeable in what he is teaching. I found him very confusing. He speaks really fast. And I found his assignments easy, but they way he described the assignments made it hard to understand. Always have your book or he will kick you out of class. Overall, I thought he was confusing. The way he talked, the way he taught was just confusing.
This class was kind of a joke. I liked Prof Sherlock a lot as a person but the way he had the class set up did not work well for any of us. There were only four assignments we turned in: midterm essay (prospectus for the final), final essay, midterm in-class essays (SUPER HARD) and final in-class essays. If you don't write well DON'T TAKE.
Sherlock is a great teacher, but he prefers that you take creative writing and conform it to his standards. It's not just a write whatever you want kind of class; there is a rubric. There are no tests or quizes. He strives for your creativeness & grades with feedback to make you a better writer. Attend the workshops, do the work, & you'll do fine.
This is not a class you will do well in if you do not know how to write a solid literary paper. That being said, I learned A LOT from this class. I struggled with the midterm essays but by the end of the course he helped me write a great final paper. His expectations are high, but it is great if you plan on transferring to a UC.
you should not take this teacher. all of my class for this semester is complaining about him. we are taking exams and all the grades in the class are low. when he teaches he doesn't teach you well and his exams are usually hard. he likes to make you work on paragraph a lot. Usually he asks for hard things to do in his paragraph.
I would recommend not taking this teacher for American Literature. There are only four assignments, all essays, and he does NOT explain them beforehand at all. The class discussions of the text were also not helpful as he only wanted to discuss how he interpreted the text. Overall, not a very good class, in my opinion.
This class was difficult but I definitely learned a lot. Good professor. Yes, take this class.
Very tough class, but was pushed to be a better writer. Take a class with him if you want a challenge!
Text is a must. Do the readings or the midterm and final will be very difficult. If you don't know how to write an argument or a thesis you will not get very far in this class. Participate in class discussion, it's a good chunk of the grade. Otherwise, enjoy an enthralling and passionate look at literature.
He is really hard. I appreciate his knowledge, but really does expect his students to know everythinggg going into this 120 course. Not realistic. Also a tad arrogant, and is kinda annoying about it. Not my favorite professor.
Professor Sherlock is a very tough teacher but you will learn a LOT. This is a big boy class that gets you ready for the real world. You will spend a LOT of time doing essays. You will be a much better writer. You will do a LOT of work. Do not take this class if you have a heavy schedule. He is very cool guy. Thank you Prof. sherlock.
Not a great teacher #100
Always take ALL of your books. If you dont have the readings to go over with the class he will throw you out! no joke he threw out half the class one night. He will make you a really good writer if you work hard but its not an easy class. The papers are rough, I'd advice getting a study partner. This is an intense class.
Class is entertaining enough, however, he is a VERY tough grader. He tries to be helpful but bottom line is he talks over his students. We aren't English professors! He's impatient so bring your books and materials to class or he WILL embarrass you and then kick you out. Ask LOTS of questions and you can normally decipher what he wants from you.
Great Professor! He expects his students to be familiar with how to write, read, and think. He won't hold your hand and do your work for you but he will help you get ideas and point you in the right direction. The work challenges you to really think and not just parrot useless bits of nonsense.
Very Hard Grader, "GPA" killer. Although, the class did improve my writing skills. He is big on small group discussion. Seems a bit moody. Use as last resort.
Professor Sherlock is a good person. He is a good professor, if you are in a creative writing major class. As an English 120 professor he is horrible. He grades as if the person has already been in three years of college English and should know how to write a book already. If your scholarship or tuition is based on GPA do not take his class.
I have to laugh at commenters who are indignant that they were expected to know how to write a paper or bring texts to class. I transferred to a UC a couple years ago and this ain't nothing. Y'all better learn how to college now ... unless you're just here for the financial aid.
He would not help the student, bad grader .Don't take his class.
Ok, I had him for poetry, so if you're taking him for something other than that, read the other reviews. For poetry, however, he knows his stuff. He's a great poet and offers great feedback on students' poems. Since he knows that his own opinions on work are just that, he grades based on if you've done the work rather than the quality of it.
Whatever notes he leaves (feedback) make sure to apply it to your revisions and you will get a good grade. I went to almost every open office and to the writing center and I received an A in the class. If you are going to do the bare minimum not the teacher to take. Bring your book to class, he will make you leave if you do not have it.
Cool person, bad professor. Only a few assignments in the class so every little grade was detrimental. He is kinda arrogant and rude especially if you slip out of class early. His quizzes are 100% trick questions and the material on them is not covered in the class. Very unclear standards. Really disappointing because he is a cool guy.
He is really intelligent and he'll let you know. I found his lectures and discussion of material extremely interesting, but he did not use any sort of portal so I had no idea what my grade was all semester! You had to go to his office hours, and for students who work, that is asking a lot. I enjoyed him but others did not and I understand why.
I've never had Sherlock for English 120, but I did have him for American Lit. & poetry he was always more than willing to help. He may come off as intimidating, but he's totally approachable! Really nice! His class may be hard at times, but it will only help you in the long run, he means well. He was always passionate about material, which helps.
I've taken him for Poetry twice now. (Plan on taking him again). Gives really good feedback. Does what he can to help you improve as a writer. Once in a while he talks about himself, but not too often and its always interesting subjects too. He's very good at responding and he's actually really approachable.
Funny, quick witted, and insightful
This professor hes very difficult! Very rude! Not helpful! He yells at his students. He doesnt let anyone to leave his class early even if you have an emergency. If you dont bring your books he will kick you out and embarras you in front the class. Hes something else his essay topics are sooo confusing hes sooo picky very very bad teacher!!!
Not the brightest! All we did was sit in class for the hour and 15 mins and not even do much. Gives 4 essays and pressures you to the max. Would not take!
From my semester with him, he hasn't been great. He's non specific with his prompts, and isn't really great at explaining them. He's left us with a 10-15 page paper that's due at the end of the semester- granted, you have the whole semester to do it, but there's no specific rubric for it and it just left me frustrated and confused. Overall, eh.
His prompts are not clear at all. He never grades on time. He is so scatter-brained that it becomes confusing.
He failed me for not doing the extra credit assignments. I was passing with a C then as soon as the extra credit assignments were do, he knocked me down an entire letter grade and i ended up failing the class.
Makes student have to jump through lopes just to submit a paper, grades very harshly no matter how much work and effort you put into your paper , very hard tough class i barley survived think twice man think twice I'm just telling the truth.
BRILLIANT PROFESSOR! Not an easy A. Seriously get's you to think, extremely difficult but I loved his class and the material required to read! Don't think you'll pass by slacking, don't be afraid to ask for help, prepare for the essay assignments they are heavy example like 10 pages 5 different SCHOLARLY sources! LOVE HIM... we don't deserve him!
I literally just picked Professor Sherlock because of his name, if Im being honest. Little did I know that I would be extremely glad I did! He is interesting to listen to, is very nice, and really knows his stuff. He does expect you write papers, but he is very clear about format & expectations, plus he will answer questions if you have them.
First off, I have always struggled with English. The class was hard because of the topic. ours was skeptical thinking ex .UFOs, urban legends conspiracies . THERE IS SO MUCH READING. His feedback is sometimes clear sometimes not. I did like that when there were discussions he says there are no wrong answers and really listens when you are talking.
Love this man! I can't wait to take another class from him. Really knows his stuff!
Taken online during pandemic. Interesting content, but directions are not always clear. For example in one place an essay will be listed as 5-7 pages, but in another the same essay is a mandatory 7-10 pages. Not a lot of teaching, but Ill cut him some slack since online teaching is challenging.
He was a very fair professor with interesting course content. Make sure you look at the assignments ahead of time because due dates in the description don't match due dates on canvas.
Relies heavily on random books from questionable authors under the guise of "making you think critically." I only thought about this class a week every month, didn't read any of the books, skipped the last essay entirely, and still got a high B. Grading often went against his own rubric and syllabus, and takes days to respond to concerns.
Don't Take This Class! He grades hard and then just gives feedback like "?". Choose someone else!
Don't ever take this teacher! There is a lot of better options than this guy! If he is your last result, I suggested taking a different teacher in the summer or down the line. He grades very hard on essays and no one gets an A. His feedback might be one of the worst I have ever received and he shouldn't be a teacher anymore.
I am a first year student, and I should have done my research about this professor, class material is mostly about skepticism (which I thought was odd topic for English) each unit has an essay, prompts are not too difficult. Doesn't give many extra credit opportunities, definitely buy the textbooks.
I absolutely loved his class! If writing isn't your strong suit, you might find his class a bit challenging. The course revolves entirely around skepticism, which I found personally captivating and mind-stimulating. One aspect that stood out to me was the professor's exceptional communication skills. Whenever I emailed him, he responded promptly.
The class wasn't super difficult, and he gave thorough replies when I would ask for feedback. However, he was a very tough grader, and the essay assignments included very detailed criteria that can be confusing. He was also a slow grader, so I didn't know what my grade would be until way later in the semester.
There are 4 essays in the course, and they're all on skepticism and things of that nature. Which, for English, seems abnormal, but overall it is not too bad. Although the professor's way of grading is very harsh, almost as he expects everyone to be professional writers from the go, while I mind you, it was an Eng120 class. Def not an easy A class.
My main problem were the essays and the amount of reading required to do them. Like, this class is only 3 units, yet I spent so much time reading! +if you don't EXACTLY answer the prompt by your 3rd and 4th essay, he will unjustly deduct a ton of points.*If your not great at essays and/or English is not your first language, do NOT take this class *
I, personally, did not have a good experience with this professor at all. In my opinion, he was a very tough grader and gave unclear instructions. I felt that he unfairly graded my work and was way too harsh when grading. I felt that he was very particular about what he wanted in essays but never clearly told students exactly what he wanted.
Awful English teacher. Dude is obsessed with skepticism and that was incorporated into all assignments for the semester; from reading at least 5 published essays every week about skepticism and superstition, to writing different styles off essays about skepticism, and discussions about skepticism. Didn't learn anything about writing or reading.
I would never ever take this class again. I had such a horrific time. In my opinion, the grading was unfair and way too strict. If you are not an expert writer then get ready to fail. If you do not write the essay exactly as expected, your grade will be tanked. The professor did give decent feedback, so that part of the class was fine.
I'm honestly at a loss for words when trying to describe how disappointing and frustrating my experience was. This class has left me feeling defeated and belittled. It felt as though no matter how hard I tried, my efforts were completely dismissed. This class left me feeling hopeless and ruined any motivation I had to do well or try at all.
Honestly would not take again. Professor did give good feedback but instructions were unclear and hard to follow. The format of directions was hard to read and prof is super picky grader. If you don't follow everything exactly you will fail. I thought it would be an English class but really it was focused on skepticism not English.
I am not mad, I am just disappointed in this class. Super harsh grader and unclear instructions. Literally sets you up to fail. Not fun and wayyyyyyy too much reading. Essays were literally 50% of the grade. And no one got an A. Not fair. Super disappointing.
Grading was inconsistent and unclear. I found it difficult to understand what the professor expected in assignments, and despite following instructions carefully, I received lower grades than anticipated without constructive feedback. When I asked for clarification, the responses were vague and unhelpful.
Incredibly inconsistent grader, provided incredibly poor feedback on essays, made it impossible to recieve a very good grade on an essay, even after correcting any errors made on previous ones for future essays. Assigned tons and tons of mandatory, yet mostly unnecessary reading and assignments related to said reading.
This was the most controlling English professor that I've ever encountered in my life. The readings are long and most of the literary work comes from old white males. He makes you argue papers from his perspective, if you don't your grade will suffer, or he will mark it incomplete and you won't get a grade. He takes almost a month to grade papers
This professor is an extremely harsh grader and makes this class feel way more difficult than it needs to be. Expectations are unclear and feedback is rarely constructive.
Take this class if you have no other option. NO OTHER OPTION. This professor is controlling, inflexible, and grades harshly. One of the most stressful classes I have ever taken.
I do not recommend taking this class unless you want to cry. I was always stressed out with assignments and essays. He is terrible with grading assignments on time unless you format an essay wrong, but it takes two weeks for me to see that it was graded. His comments that he left were not helpful, and they were confusing.
