Great examples, great clarity, great integration of material. If you're interested in the subject. Also teaches Micro well
Storchmann is the man, don't take MICRO with another professor, lectures are interesting, he is hilarious, and his notes are invaluable, homeworks are very good indicators for tests, grading is generally fair and the curve is pretty generous
He's a typical german guy...very responsible, down to earth, clear, straight forward, and tests are pretty easy if you read the notes, which he posted on BB every week. Office hours extremly helpful, annoying long lines before exams though...Take him !!
I thought he was great!!!! And he is funny, sometimes meanders but I think he gives interesting extra insights to the material and taught me a lot. It looks like he almost crafted the cirriculum of the PublicEcon class b/c he only referred to the book for a few topics. Also was helpful to me when I missed a bunch of classes b/c of mono.
what a cool class. Who would think that wine economics is so interesting. Love it.
Great Industrial Organization class. He uses the wine industry as an example. And he knows everything about it. Highly recommended. Super class.
This class is scaled Industrial Organization but it's actually wine economics. The wine link really helps. And it makes it super interesting. Plus, Karl is very clear, organized and funny. That helps. Great class!
Amazing person, easily one of the least organized professors I have had at NYU. Makes learning the material very difficult. Saves bulk of exams until the lecture or two before so there isn't time to fully learn it. Funny and brilliant guy, not the best professor. Teaches elective courses better than Micro
I just took his Intermediate Micro. I think it was a pretty hard class. But Storchmann makes it interesting. I love when he talk about the labor market.
Professor Storchman has vast knowledge on the subject of Wine Economics. He teaches exceedingly well and prepares you well. I took wine econ at Rutgers University with him and it was one of the most interesting course. His indepth knowledge of this subject made this course very interesting. I learned a lot about over all Econ. of Wine Industry.
most overrated teacher in the econ department. yes, he is a cool guy and tells great jokes. but i don't think he is a good teacher. although his tests are easy, he curves them too hard. Also, he is not the most available or helpful teacher out of class. He doesn't grade his own tests, so good luck trying to get points back on your midterm or final
Excellent professor. Very entertaining and keeps students interested. He graded on thenYale curve, which is very generous. But will use the NYU Econ depts curve in fall.
Professor Storchmann is very funny, and his class is not boring; however, he is extremely disorganized and there is not even close to enough practice. Also, I feel that the material is not difficult enough. My knowledge wasn't expanded past principles.
Best prof ever. Very organized. He always posts awesome lecture notes. I have taken two classes with him and will take the third one next semester. His classes are always booked out on the first day of registration.
ridiculous class. Teach with bulls*** math, has no respect for the subject, tell jokes for half of the class. But he will give terrible grades. Beware him if anybody told you his class is easy, cuz hes a snake in heart, people doesnt see it.
took his intermediate micro. i really like his approach, math with real world examples. and his lectures and very entertaining. i always look forward to them . professor storchmann does a lot of research on the wine industry and aways refers to his own research. i can't wait to take his industrial organization where he teaches more about this
Gave a 3 on easiness but feel like I need to clarify: the material is ridiculously easy - it's full of BS basically; however, the exams are arbitrarily made and some of the questions are given in class. In short, if you dont listen to his terrible class, you will get horible grades; if you listen to his class, you are wasting your life on BS econ.
Horribly unclear and unhelpful. Earlier ratings misleading as he used to use the Yale grading curve in past semesters before being instructed not to last year. Avoids giving straight answers to questions. Lectures are full of him going on tangents. Actually stopped lecture once to check the score for a soccer match. Worst professor I have ever had.
He's the kind of professor who is more interested in talking about himself and making tricky questions than actually helping you learn. Regret taking him.
awesome class. He is very enthusiastic and keeps us interested. I did not think I am that interested in urban economics, but he enriches theoretical concepts with real world examples. best econ teacher at nyu.
This class was literally a convoluted version of Principles of Micro. He tries to use graphs to explain the material, but makes no sense. He is also NEVER available to help w the material. His exams are based on notes so going to class is important. There is no other better option so your stuck with him, but I thought he was a terrible teacher.
All micro professors suck so he's the best of them. He's funny but let's get to the meat of it. His midterm was really hard but his final was much easier. A bit of a mystery. Midterm had little to do with the problem sets. Prob sets count for 25% so they matter a lot. Take this class with some caution. He doesn't use the Yale curve anymore either.
I have no idea what I just learned in this class. No partial credit on the exams, no help, vague notes - I had to google most of his topics for clarity, and he refuses to help elucidate. Tests are incredibly arbitrary. Literally what did I just take.
Intermediate Micro seemed like the such a pointless and meaningless class. His exams are made based on the notes he gives in class. However, he does not know how to teach at all. He just draws graphs, and unsuccessfully attempts to explain what they mean. He is also not helpful or available at all outside of class. And he talks about himself a lot.
Terrible teacher! Avoid at all costs!
Do not take him!
I've had him for both urban and int micro. He's a really funny guy and is very enthusiastic about his work as a wine economist. However, I'll have to admit that he really does a terrible job at organizing notes, and teaching in general. The tests are somewhat based on problem sets, but are pretty hard and incorporate a lot of unlearned material.
I am surprised about the last 5 bad reviews. It looks like they all come from one person. Maybe the one they caught cheating? Clearly, anybody can post a review here multiple times. Storchmann is one of the most amazing professors at NYU.
I am surprised about the last 5 bad reviews. It looks like they all come from one person. Maybe the one they caught cheating? Clearly, anybody can post a review here multiple times. Storchmann is one of the most amazing professors anywhere.
awesome prof. take him
I am appalled at the amount of bad reviews on here, last time I checked (last year) this page was full of amazing ones. Storchmann is super funny, a great lecturer, and pretty clear about what he wants. Come to class (sign in sheet) hand in all the HW (graded on correctness) and he likes to HINT at exam Q's, which I think is done fairly.
Storchman is a better comedian than economist or professor. His lectures contain jokes and minimal economics. There is no real math, which is why he fills two huge lecture halls. Gives away his exam question in prior lectures, be prepared to be bored and learn nothing in this course. One wrong MC-answer on the exam and you'll go from A to B+
I am taking Micro with Storchmann. His lectures are amazing. Good mix between theorymath, concepts and real world applications. He always keeps me interested. Looking forward to the next one. --- And I am esp. looking forward to taking Industrial Organization with him next semester.
This course is all Multiple Choice, many of the questions have little to do with Economics like "Will Germany win the 2014 FIFA world cup? or questions are repeated slightly tweaked so you will trip over the wording. If you are actually interested in Urban Econ go read up on it, if you struggle in Econ take his course because it is a joke!
Storchman is an amazing professor and fair grader. Exam problems are similar to homework problems. He is also pretty clear about howwhat he will test if you pay attention in class. I don't understand why he has so many negative comments- probably from people who don't go to classpeople he caught cheating.
Storchmann is a funny. But honestly looking back a s a senior now, he isn't the most helpful nor organized guy and overall not a very good teacher. There's many more helpful professors in the department who are just as interesting and funny, and more organized, helpful and responsive.
Professor Storchmann is the best. His classes are always full, everybody wants to take them. register early! His urban economics is super interesting. He brings his theoretical model alive. awesome.
the worst professor I've had at NYU. Only cares about his wine and research. irresponsible.
I took his urban economics at NYU and this was the best class ever. I love his style, mixing some intricate theory with applications (do you want to buy a house, go to his class before you lose a lot of money). Truly inspirational instructor.
LOL is what I have to say about Storchmann. The class isn't difficult, if you study the exams are fair and straightforward. He's a funny guy, but urban econ is kind of a useless class. Talks a lot about wine, wasted 3 classes showing us a powerpoint about his vineyard. It's not a hard class, but you may feel as if you're wasting your credits.
his classes are awesome and inspirational. I already took Micro and Urban with Storchmann and really like his style and the material he covers
A pretty standard good teacher. He is pretty clear and also funny. His tests are fairly easy except for a curveball True/False section. Only grades are biweekly problem sets and midterm/final. He basically teaches every class using tables and graphs that he draws. All around, a pretty good class. I would take him again.
I like Karl's style. His lectures are very entertaining, at the same time he teaches intricate models and sometimes difficult material. I am taking Urban Economics and have learned a lot. ... I really liked the last two classes on parking. Work load is fair, grading is fair too. He is very helpful. Highly recommended
He is a extraordinary professor. I would definitely recommend him! but be prepared to do a lot of work and not miss any classes! i had to work hard for a B, but i'm not very "econ oriented"! he is absolutely hilarious and by far my favorite class/teacher of the semester
Karl S. is a cool and funny professor. He makes his lectures as interesting as possible. The exam are a little harder than expected. It's not hard to pass. He's very helpful if you questions. Cool guy.
Professor Storchmann is probably the best economics professor at NYU. His lectures are captivating, great, sometimes funny. You need to work though. Tests are on the hard side, but nothing unexpected.
I ma taking his urban econ this semester. we just learned about idling in new york and doing a project on it. that is amazing. i had never thought of idling but now i see it everywhere. karl is very inspirational
Professor Storchmann's class is an easy way to get a solid overview of Urban Economics. The professor has brilliantly interesting research in the Wine Economics, which he does a great job at integrating into the course material (why attend a research university if you don't want to be benefited by the professors' research?). Over all a great class.
Professor Storchmann's habit of derailing his lectures with non-helpful tangents and his tendency to not flesh out crucial concepts in class made it difficult to be able to do any more than understand the formulas he required us to know. Lectures are poorly organized, and the final exam has far too much info that wasn't covered in the problem sets.
He deviates from the topic TOO MUCH. Not only he casually digresses, but he also talks about TOTALLY IRRELEVANT stuff from the course, such as wine, beer, or whatever drew his recent attention. So his class is easy. But the test itself - not so easy. And no practice exam! Some of his problems are not even from the lecture or from the problem set!
I am taking Urban Economics with Professor Storchmann. That is so interesting. We are talking about vehicle idling and he let;s us go to the City Council hearing. So much Real world experience. Maybe we can even make a difference. I like his enthusiasm.
Superb professor! He is heavily into football(soccer) and is always down for a discussion after class. His classes are interesting, and his teaching is clear. Most problems on the exam are from the homework, so if you're thorough with that, you will do well.
Can't explain a simple concept clearly... Homework is alright. but the tests are harder than the homework is. slow pace in class. learn little from him
Prof Storchmann is one of the better NYU Econ Professors. He is consistently funny and entertaining, although he sometimes goes on irrelevant tangents (loitering). He likes tying concepts w "real world" examples of Walla Walla, WA & wine (his research specialty). Midterm is close to but than harder than HW and does have questions not done in class.
his urban economics is great. good mix of theory and applications. also, he is a FC Liverpool fan and once came with the Klopp t-shirt to class. yeah
learn little from him. he loves talking about his wine production experience and his wine purchase experience and grapes..
Profsssor Storchmann's class is relaxed and different from any other class I've taken in the Econ department. He likes relating his material to real life examples, making lectures slightly more interesting. Takes notes in class and do the homework and it'll be an easy A
Storchmann is an entertaining professor but, even though the lectures are breezy, the tests have a few complications which prevent the class from being an easy A. The questions are close to but still quite different from the problem sets. The multiple choice qs pull from small details from the lectures and can be tricky. It's a tradeoff.
At first you will think he is super interesting and funny, but the material you learn is essentially useless, unnecessarily difficult, and he really doesn't care much about his students. He cares a lot about wine and soccer. Tests are not comparable to the material taught in class. I'm an A student and I worked harder than I ever have to get an B+.
Really funny professor. He teaches very clearly and concisely. As long as you pay attention and take notes in class, the homework and exams are pretty straightforward.
He's a terrible professor! He's such a tough grader. In the start, he seems interesting, but gets so annoying. The thins you learn in Urban Economics don't apply anywhere. He randomly introduces projects towards the final exam, which requires students to physically be present at different sites, IN THE MIDST OF FINALS WEEK! Don't take his class!
Karl Storchmann uses his students to gather data for his research. He forced me into taking milk prices throughout NYC just so he could do some research. He warned me he would penalize me if I do not. His teaching method is a pure failure. Nothing in class is organized. He hates his students and does not care about them at all. His jokes are racist
Storchmann is the best prof ever. Great lecturer, very interesting stuff. Urban Econ is not a Mikey Mouse class and you will learn a lot. e has to follow the econ dept's grading curve though
You would hardly meet a professor who teaches at a good school but is unable to speak english. I could never follow the questions he asked on exams due to his poor writing skills. This class is very hard and you can never score good grades in it. I followed a friend's "enemy tbh" advice and took this class. I regret this every single day of my life
Avoid this guy at all costs. Extremely unclear communicating during lectures bc of his accent and spends 80% of every class talking about his personal life. The time he actually spends teaching is extremely unclear. His lecture notes are grammatically incorrect and chaotic . Rude and dismissive of his students' concerns. Doesn't curve as he said.
By far the worst of all at NYU. Makes you do tons of Homework and gives you practice problems that have nothing to do with exams. You have to do extra credit things to pass (I wasted days collecting milk prices and taping car exhausts). Extremely rude, very hard (econometrics and micro AGAIN), plain horrible professor. I wish him the worst.
storchmann is awesome. I am taking his urban economics. he combines theoretical modes with real world experience. I am fascinated and always look forward to his lectures.
I like his lectures. Makes me interested in economics in general and urban econ in particular
Funny guy, lectures are pretty entertaining but oftentimes go off topic, usually about his love for drinking wine. Problem sets assigned infrequently, only around 6 per semester. 2 exams, both moderately hard. Main issue is class feels disorganized and hard to know how to study properly for exams.
Great and funny professor. Teaching clear. He posts excellent notes . Homework and exams are pretty straightforward.
I had thought of Urban Econ as a real thing. But Storchmann makes this interesting. Now I am genuinely interested in Urban Planning -- maybe as a career. Great inspiration
Storchmann's lectures are captivating. The best at NYU so far
super interesting lectures. combines concepts such and urban land values and vineyard prices
Storchmann is awesome. He is funny, smart, and has very interesting lectures. He often tells you in class "this will be on the exam" which is helpful for studying. The class is still moderately difficult, so you will have to do the work, but at least he makes everything interesting and relatable to the real world. Highly recommend.
Karl rocks.
I've been trying to figure out why I am attending the lectures. His lectures are indeed funny, yet while others laugh, I just hope he can go back to the topics that we should be discussing. This class is titled URBAN ECON, however, I fell like I am taking STUDIES OF WALAWALA and WINE IS BENEFICIAL classes at the same time. I am being really fair.
Guy's a funny guy, but I really can't follow what he talks about. Packs in different tiers of materials into the same class, and rambles on tangents all the time. Didn't end up going to a lot of lectures, but the class was easy.
Karl talks about stories about wine and "Walawala" probably 1/3 of every lecture, but the rest is very clear and helpful. Just get the homework done and work through his handouts, you will easily get an A or A-. While attendance is not mandatory, he will include a couple questions in the final to check if you have attended that class...
He is a funny professor. He will make you want to come to lecture not to hear him talk about Econ, but to hear his jokes and short stories. The topic of Econ is difficult to understand, but he tries to make it a bit easier for students.
reasonably clear lectures, easy homework, make sure to attend class to know what's on the exams
Don't know where to start with this guy. His lectures are very big picture, conceptual stuff. Overcomplicates very simple concepts. Homework is online problem sets that use numbers and formulas: things you don't learn in lectures. Then theres the exams. Nothing on the exams are from lectures or problem sets. Don't take his class.
do not take this prof for intro to micro; every lecture is the same with random tangents and overcomplicated graphs for each chapter; problem sets follow the textbook - both of which have nothing to do with lecture, but they're easy to fake for an A. exams have nothing to do with what you learn; TAs can be awful; study hard out of class if you take
Okay, so here is the deal with Karl: his lectures are fine and understandable regarding the ACTUAL COURSE MATERIAL. If one does the textbook readings and , then they will understand what the course is actually about. However, Karl decides to give tests that are really wacked and not based on the problems from the class but weird questions. AVOID!
The exam questions are wack. He tries his best to teach well but I'm always falling asleep. The concepts can be really interesting but hard to understand well. Accent isnt a problem I didnt study well for this class, which is probably why I didn't learn much. His class left a lot to be desired but helpful if you want to dabble in econ. nice guy tho
Professor Storchmann was fantastic. The lectures are interesting and clear. Reading the textbook is unnecessary because the he will elaborate everything he wants to cover in the lecture. GO TO THE LECTURES! Exams have only less than 30 multiple choices, which are easy too. He was inspiring. He connected economics with real world problems. TAKE IT!
The worst class I have ever taken. He gave wrong definitions of terms, for example, that of a p-value. Consistently went on tangents in class and changed the syllabus without any prior consultation with the students. Called this pandemic a "scare" in an email sent to all students before we went online. Not informative or challenging. Not caring.
I dont write reviews because I'm lazy like that but as I binge watch his zoom lectures I see he really is passionate and thinks these concepts are cool and then I suddenly I find that they are cool too... I watched a 30 min video on parking! I've dropped from econ major and am now minoring but this is a must class! It really b dope doe. TAKE IT
can be very inconsistent. He doesn't update the syllabus but makes spontaneous changes to the course on his own throughout the semester. Assignments are given on random days with little notice + sometimes assigned 3 days before the due day. Exams are all MCs so no partial credits. Very confusing throughout the semester.
he is a funny dude, a wine fanatic who loves walla walla, but his lectures always run around tangents and make easy stuff complex. after school switched to remote his course became a disaster. online exams were full of technical errors. entirely MCQ+TF can't be good for grades. for credit/requirement then do it; otherwise, think twice
Professor Storchmann's really passionate about Urban Econ and you can see that through his lectures, but he's very strict about the exams and his homework pacing is a joke. He literally posted one that was due in 3 days, and that too the day before finals week started. He's an interesting guy and his lectures are fun, but he's very disorganized.
Good in person lecturer but had an awful transition to online. He made the class more difficult, assigning more hws than he has for any of his previous semestersin the face of a pandemic. Final was a disorganized mess, full of mishaps & high expectations on the students. Least understanding professor I've had. This class heavily benefited cheaters
Storchmann was an incredible lecturer in person. Unfortunately, once classes went online, things went to general disaster. He has a poor understanding for student situations, often acting incredibly mercurial and peremptory in exams and homework assignments, dictatorial and over-assigning, respectively. I had a poor experience online.
Karl's lectures are pretty decent. The exams were whack as small errors would result in huge grade drops with no chance of partial credit even though everything else was correct. The exam also has no semblance of the problem sets we do. Avoid the class if you are looking for an intellectually stimulating course as you would have learned nothing
I only had him for remote learning. But from my experience he is not a great teacher. His lectures are so confusing and tangential that I stopped going to them. I just used the textbook and the internet. The class average for the midterm was 56% so that should tell you how good he is at teaching.
I took intro to micro. He is a really nice guy and classes are pretty entertaining. Grading can be a bit tough. I had take econ classes in highschool so the class was relatively easy, but if you haven't had any classes in economics, it may be tough, so prepare to read a lot from the textbook. I had to skim through some pages relatively frequently.
Class is basically self taught so just be ready to read. P-Sets suck; Exams and quizzes are tricky. He just talks a lot about drugs and alcohol. It's honestly kinda funny.
Honestly stop going to class because all he talks about is wine. Dunno why is there something called wine economics. Basically had to learn all the material myself. He claims that homework sets are biweekly but assigns two homework sets a week and just assigned one that is due in three days which is why I came to write this.
He is a nice guy. Exam grades will be curved. If you finish the problem sets and watch the recordings you'll be fine.
I didn't attend any of karl's lectures but still got an A. Did a lot of reading and the tests and exams have an amazing curve.
Probably the worst class I have ever taken. Ive never failed a midterm, let alone test before in my life, yet in this class I did. Class averages on tests are so LOW which reflect how little we learn. Do not take him. Lectures differ from the textbook and you have to do a lot of self teaching. This mere class made me drop the economics major.
Smart guy but I would NOT take him remotely. Exams are completely different from problem sets and readings and were extremely difficult/confusing to study for. Class avg on the midterm was an F, to give you an idea. The curve is not generous either. Had to work my ass of for a B+.
Disorganized, unaccommodating, low test averages, inconsistent.
I hate this man with a passion. He does not care about his students.
I know not everybody agrees, but the curves were very generous and all the psets were from textbook readings or class discussions. The workload was reasonable, and he's a funny person.
Urban Econ is honestly a very interesting class - you learn a lot about the real world. And Professor Storchmann makes his lectures funny. Take this class. I promise it's worth it. And if you're worried about your grade - don't be.
Prof Storchmann is passionate about urban Econ for sure and on wine too, but hes not so organized. Since everythings online now, its even worse. The course material isnt hard, but exams are nightmares, especially how he set up the choices. FYI he doesnt really provide explanations on grades.
-rambles, tests you specifically on his ramblings -extremely hard to reach on email; 1-word replies -diverges from textbook, forcing you to attend class to catch little words or terms he drops that will inevitably be on the test -always, ALWAYS read textbook section before going to class. Else you will go insane.
Had him for urban - worst professor Ive had in college. Course content itself isnt hard but the exams are insanely difficult. Lectures are wasted on tangents. Also completely disorganized, assigning problem sets during midterm week with only three days to do it. Just avoid this course. I have taken harder courses with much better success. AVOID!
Organized and doesnt seem to care about his students. Not worth taking.
Generous with grading. Highly recommended.
Pretty generous curve. not hard for an econ major
Ugh. I love him but his teaching is not it. Didn't learn a thing in Microecon but still barely got a B+ lol. Remote was easy, but I'm sure his class wouldve been much harder in person. The whole class did bad on his exams, doesn't explain things well at all, very unorganized, just not good at all. But, the only option for microecon (basically).
excellent class, hard material, but we learned a lot
Professor Storchmann is a nice person who posts notes for students to review. However, the workload is too unbearable. I would spend hours and hours on a weekly assignment. Too much pressure. The grading is very tough and unjust as well. This class doesn't have recitation nor a TA you can talk to. The materials are OK, but he's bad at teaching.
Tons of work. Try to avoid him. If you must take him, be prepared to clear out an entire day to work on one problem set. He is extremely disorganized as well. Can't say that he's the worst professor, but he comes close.
Had him for Intro to Micro which was fine cuz the course was so easy. But urban is crazy. He doesNOT follow his syllabus. Give TONS of work during midterm week. Change instructions and exam format by his will. DoesNOT care about his student and his job at all. Only cares about WallaWalla and wine
All of his lectures are straight forward, as long as you attend his classes. It is an easy A
Prof. Storchmann's Urban Econ. class is definitely easy if you just go to class, however, he is not the best lecturer. He will often brush over the technical aspects of concepts to save time and talk about the stuff he's interested in (wine) -- makes for an occasionally interesting tangent, but might leave you having to teach yourself some things.
I didn't think the course itself was too difficult but I would never recommend this teacher. His notes and answer keys have a bunch of errors, so trying to study is rough because all his mistakes confuse you. These aren't just silly typos, but it mostly errors in formula usage and calculation, so when I look back to study I end up just being lost.
His accent makes it difficult to understand and he didn't record lectures for no reason sometimes.... BEWARE Walla Walla, Wine, and Beer.
Super disorganized.Always change the syllabus at the last second. First told us there is an all MC midterm and at the last second changed it to TF plus FRQ. Told us the Final is similar to the Midterm, change it at the last second to all MC. His lecture is sometimes boring and sometimes hilarious but most of the time irrelevant. Also Heavy accent.
Funny guy, terrible prof. This guy was the so unavailable outside of class its actually insane. His lectures are so god awful. Better off not showing up and learning on your own. Too bad his notes are awful as well. This class is a free for all and there is no winning. Class avg. on exams was like 56 bc we were taught NOTHING!
OK tests, but TERRIBLE policies. Gives zero leniency on anything so I would say take another professor if possible at all. I had an error on my computer that prevented me from submitting my assignment as a PDF so I submitted it right before the due date as an IMAGE. I also emailed him about the issue, but still ended up getting a 0.
Great professor and good lectures. He cares about his students and gives quick replies to emails. Actually learnt a lot from his class. Easy A if you go to lectures and learn about his notes.
The professor goes on huge tangents to talk about wine and wine economics and only half the class is on the syllabus. Prepare to be bored during lectures. Luckily the tests don't differ much from the notes, so as long as you do the homework and understand the material you'll be fine. I skipped class and self-studied and did good.
Easy grader , easy test, you don't need to attend his class to get a good grade. I could not understand his lecture because of the accent this whole semester though I knew he tried to let us learn something(sry). However, I did the self-study and it turned out to be great.
Professor is ok in lectures -- he cares about what he's teaching and he's relatively funny, but he's terribly disorganized. Not very helpful via email -- gives very vague responses. Exams aren't terrible -- just review questions from the quizzes and problem sets. He basically recycles questions with different numbers.
He did not teach very well, and all he talked about is wine and Walla Walla. Midterm is fine, but final is pretty hard. He always said we will have curve, but the final letter grade doesn't show we have curve apparently. Do not take this class! Save your GPA
Insane midterm with many solutions of none exist. Be prepared to work on your own.
he is not great at teaching but urban econ with him was not too bad. He makes his classes pretty interesting and he is a super nice prof. Class is easy
First few weeks in the class it was clear that he goes on long tangents about what is passionate about (Wine and Walla Walla), but LESS about what is pertinent to the course. Very disorganized teaching style, it is difficult to connect his course concepts at all, would 100% recommend avoiding this class
Very unclear what he teaches off of, his lectures seem incredibly random, where at the start of the course they made sense but towards the end it devolves into a random focus on what he finds interesting (parking apparently)... terribly unstructured and overall a mediocre professor.
Storchmann is such a nice and funny guy, but he's not exactly a great professor. His lectures are interesting but not very helpful and he never posts his lecture notes. The shortened version of the notes he do post are only a fraction of the content covered. Take this class if you want to hear a cool old guy talk about wine, not if you want an A.
Great Professor! I'm slightly confused by the negative reviews. He's approachable, passionate and funny. Grading structure is extremely clear. Several reviews complain about his tangents and the lack of cohesion between his lecture notes and textbook notes. If you simply attend lectures and make notes, this wouldn't be a problem.
He's an interesting professor but the exams are pretty hard. He makes unfunny jokes about Washington and wine every class but I lowkey think he's aware of it -which is kind of funny. This class is content heavy with a lot of new concepts thrown at you; luckily he recycles the same questions including the ones on his final. You can them online
If you attend class & pay attention, it's very doable. This prof is a great guy, and you can tell that he cares about the students and wants them to succeed (IF you put in the effort). He responds to emails extremely quickly and is always available during office hours. He may go on tangents here and there, but you can tell he's just passionate
Walla Walla.
This class is a decent choice for a 200 level elective. The hw and tests are pretty tough but he's accessible to help with hw problems through email and office hours. Going to lectures is important because he teaches directly for the hw and tests at times. Overall this class is not super time consuming or stressful and there's a curve.
He is a good professor although his exam and lectures are so characteristic, I mean, his teaching are structured with trivia topics and uncommon knowledge.
He's clearly passionate about wine and Walla Walla, WA. He thinks he's funny but he's not. The lectures are useless but he posts detailed notes on every chapter. Multiple-choice midterm and final with 3 take-home quizzes (1 dropped) and 7 homework (2 dropped). There is also an attendance poll. Class is easy as long as you follow along the notes.
Please trust me and do not take this class. If you are even slightly considering it, DON'T!! He is addicted to wine and will only rant about that. Makes literally zero sense. Extremely bizarre person and a horrible class. Makes all the calculus I've taken look easy.
Professor Storchmann presents lectures in an engaging and captivating manner, making even a 75-minute session pass without a hint of fatigue. He gave out exam questions during lectures. Poll questions are utilized for attendance. A diligent study ethic is rewarded in his classes, as it directly correlates with achieving high grades.
exams & psets are straightforward, just don't skip lectures. never did the readings but i was fine bc he tells you exactly what you need to know to get a good grade. in-class practice problems are featured on the exam (almost identical but just diff numbers). hw is doable and is good prep for exams. really funny & entertaining guy.
Unreasonable hard deadlines for assignments with no option for a late penalty, not accommodating for those with a disability
Boring class
Attendance is 2.5% of your grade and is done through getting a pollev question correct. Topics are not that difficult and he will give you questions that will be on the exam in class. If you study for the exams using past problem sets and quizzes, you will do well. He also assigns readings but tbh I never did them
Professor Storchmann's lectures are engaging, and his grading system is fair. While the material can be challenging, using resources like unstuck study alongside the course materials can help you succeed.
Rate my professor couldn't be more accurate about his Wine and Walla Walla obsession. Beyond that he's actually a pretty good teacher. The content you learn is kinda irrelevant but as long as you come to class and take notes you shouldn't have any problem doing well on the homework's and exams. Work load is also very manageable.
Multiple choice singular midterm and final and questions are similar to the quizzes (given oyo time) and problem sets. Incredibly boring for an 8 am however not terribly difficult content to understand. Encourages group work and will help you find people to make a group if you dont have friends in the class. Funny guy honestly a hit or miss
Walla Walla. You know what I mean if you've taken this course. :)
attendance is checked through a pollev which is randomly given out some of the lectures. problem sets and take-home quizzes are easy, and exams are basically a repeat of the questions you see on the homework. i believe he applies a scale. averages on our exams were around a B/B+. i will say sometimes he can be a bit disorganized, but overall good
His class is really good. He is funny and goes through the content slowly. Hws are easy and manageable. You can drop one quiz and one hw.
So basically this class is not hard but this prof makes it hard, you can't understand what he's talking about. The problems on the homework is not taught in class, the final and mid term are 35% each. He's writing in class is unreadable and he homework is nothing like the things taught in class. But otherwise he's ok.
great professor
Storchmann is the best. The material is difficult and we learn a a lot. His lecture are very entertaining and inspirational
I think he is a great professor! I took his Urban Economics class, which I recommend. He has an accent, which makes it hard to understand, but he is hilarious in class.
Professor Karl is super nice and sweet guy. I do not think he is a good lecturer and that is main reason why I gave him low grade. His exams are hard, very old school way, but he is fair grader. It is not an easy A and you will have to study a lot by yourself if you want an A. He is easily accessible outside of class. Good guy, but I wouldn't take
The greatest professor ever, his class is super interesting and I think no one will fall asleep.
horrible lecturer cannot understand anything cuz of accent
He does not give past exams so you will have no idea on what is on the test.
Changed weight of exams mid semester from 30 to 35%. Exams were also not easy. Lectures were not useful but attendance was taken. Really nice prof but there are better 200 lvl electives.
RUN!!!!!!!!!!
Do not take
no-BS answer: lectures are boring. i barely went to them and the ones I did go I was on my phone. For tests, I studied the psets and quizzes (only took me 4 days to study for each midterm and final). Very nice professor. Final exam median was under-70%, which suprised me b/c material is very starightforward and I got an A without going to class.
Urban Economics is a challenging course with a heavy workload, and the final exam is genuinely difficult. The professor's teaching style is rigorous, which can feel intense at times, but he explains the material clearly and in a structured way. Despite the difficulty, he is very kind, patient, and supportive when students ask questions.
His lectures were not structured well and the general story of the course (what was included versus not) was a little confusing. Notes on Brightspace were good, studied only from the notes before the exam and got a good grade. Curve was insane, because everyone bombed the final. He's super funny, will miss Walla Walla and wine stand-up comedy.
He is kind, patient and supportive outside of the class and he's very passionate about what he taught. Not that hard for a Econ 200. You can skip lectures and just study the notes. But it's not secure cuz he would test stuff that he only mentioned in class. The curve is insane cuz everyone cooked at the final. Will get a good grade if you studied!
Content itself isn't super hard but he is so unorganized and has a hard time explaining content in class. Exams were all mc but would put lots of tricks of them to trip you up. Study notes and problem sets. Hard to reach outside of class.
