Good teacher. Explains material very well and is always glad to help students.
He is disorganized and does not return homework. He takes forever to grade tests. Do not take his class if you want a strong foundation in Statistics.
he is a very nice teacher. very friendly n helpful, I liked him
He is a really good teacher. i took him for summer school and he knew exactly what he was talking about. he helped with every single question i had. he is patient with students and tries hard to his ability to help each and every one of us!
Disorganized and confusing
confusing ... he loves to teach ..but very confusing... he gives group exams...but then it's a very bad idea for students who study for exams... because the other students screwed up the test...Group tests suck
True he took a while to return quizzes and somewhat unorganized. BUT, this instructor is SO approachable,NICE,& understanding that it makes up for everything else. He is FLEXIBLE, and he will put in extra time if you ask for it, till you understand.
cool professor. ask a lot of questions and you may not get a test/final. quiz every once in a while but mostly take home. ask for it. slows down when students start having trouble but he really wants you to ask questions. lectures alright and he wants you to understand the material.
he is a good teacher. all you needed is to turn in the excel lab and try your best. you might get a "c".if you try.
This guy is AWSOME!!!Most of his tests are in groups which works out for EVERYONE(just don't be shady)because if you can the group part, the one you take by yourself will be exactly the same w/ different numbers! He makes class interesting & you won't fall asleep =P
I found him to be unorganized, difficult to explain learning objective for class. Never knew where the class was going so you could read material before coming to class. He did not follow syllabus so it was hard to prepare for class. This class required a lot of homework however since instructor rarely returned it was difficult to gage progress.
Karl Ting is one of the most engaging, provocative instructors I've ever had. He's helpful on his own, but his class structure and assignments foster the growth of study groups within the class, which is invaluable. Quirky, fun, and insightful, Prof. Ting is a delight.
Ting is a great teacher. For Linear algebra and Discrete math, you really need to do homework and ask questions. I'm sure all of his classes are like that. He spends a lot of time answering questions to make sure students understand without rushing.
good teacher for summer. He likes to make sure you understand things always wants to help. He's got a cool sense of humor & trys to keep class interesting. Ask questions cause he loves participation. Just show up to class, take good notes, & be careful on quizzes. You'll get an A w/o really studying cause tests are based on class covered material.
I like this professor. You have lots of oppotunities to improve your grade. He also spend a lot of time explaining the problems to you. I think he is awesome!!!
I miss Mr. Ting! =( Although his quizes and exams sometime are kinda hard but if you do the hw and pay attention in class, you'll do fine. He spends time to explain concepts clearly so most of the time we're behind the schedule, and maybe he will skip some sections haha.. Just that he's an unorganized type of person.
He's a great guy. There are some problems though: 1) His quizzes are very irritable because you must have them PERFECT, if not, they won't count. 2) He goes a bit fast. As for the second, it might be because he started with the wrong agenda and had to make up for it. Still, that isn't good for anyone involved. Especially the students. Hw is req'd.
He's a great teacher. He doesn't cover all the materials, his tests r really hard. But if you work hard enough in his class, you earn back a lot. His several quizzes r enough to understand and earn grade. If you want to learn, he's the best.
mr. ting is fun! he gives students opportunities to advance in class. you must know how to answer tricky questions esp. IQ questions and puzzles. he has a lot of those in which he gives you extra credit for it. good teacher tho a little bit late sometimes. very understanding for sure!
Great teacher if you really want to learn the subject and are willing to study and do the assignments. He is very good at explaining the concepts and spends a lot of class time making sure everyone understands. Grading system is a little unusual but is explained on first day.
This professor is friendly and helpful. His lectures are pretty straight forward; however, he spends too much time on certain chapters/sections that are not as important as others. He gives nots of take-home quizzes, open notes and group exams. Most of the exams are easy, however, you would have to study hard in order to do well in the final!!!
this teacher seems to have authority to change grade anytime he wants, he just looks at the student and then give grade to them. he doesn't care whether it's their works or not.
He is OK.I never understood what he says.He is not organized at all. But overall he is a OK teacher.
the best math teacher ive ever had!!!!!!!
Mr. Ting was funny and always had a story or two to share. He tended to get off track in class, and when he was explaining material it was easy to get lost, I had to keep asking for help. He doesn't give tests...only the final exam. Overall, he was pretty easy.
Mr. Ting is easy-going, entertaining and clear. His super short take-home quizzes really help you along. I was wary of the group work at first but I think it really helped everyone learn. He held extra sessions to help with the computer portions and he was always available for advice. He kept things fun. I recommend his class.
He was a great re-introduction to school and Mathematics
great teacher, very helpful
Completely confusing, veers off topic at the slightest hint of a diversion. He speaks as though he is addressing a room full of 2 year olds that magically understand algebra and gibberish.
This was the by far the WORST teacher I had at Mission. Doesn't know how to teach, rambles incoherently, confuses students, doesn't cover essential material, "dumbs down" the entire class. Believe me, you will actually get DUMBER if you listen to him for an entire semester. Ting, if you are reading this, please retire soon.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Has not graded a single test, lab, or ANY other assignment and the class is over in one week. Completely disorganized, sloppy, careless. Run away screaming.
Wonderful teacher. You only do well if you're committed to the class. Mr. Ting cares about students but some don't understand that they need to put in their own effort because he doesn't just give out A's. The class isn't even that hard. Homework is due three times a semester. The final isn't hard either but it takes about 2hours.
Said he'd do a recommendation for me, but never did. Decent teacher, but he likes to throw curveballs. Has a strange and (I say) rather difficult grading policy. Quite disorganized, did not give back our second of three tests. He does let you use notes and textbook on the tests, but you don't learn anything from that (bad if you're taking 3b).
this guy is the worst teach at MC
Worst teacher! Unorganized, hard to understand. Teaching skills are the worst. Unfair grading. This teacher needs to be fired. Save your self and do not take him.
Makes the subject harder than it needs to be. Kind of difficult to understand his lectures. Likes to give questions on test/quizzes unrelated to homework. If you take him, make sure you can teach yourself by reading the book.
Ummm...he is crazy! He only gives you points for quizzes if you get a perfect score...if you dont, he gives you a zero. He is so adament about A's, adds too much stress to an already stressful class. I dropped the class in a heartbeat.
Mr. Ting, while a bit odd at times, is really helpful and sincere. If you take the time to pay attention in class, ask questions and participate, you'll do just fine. His lectures are two way streets, participate and you'll get more out of them. Great teacher if you are the kind of person who doesn't need someone holding your hand to learn!
He was pretty good.
Unfocused lecture. Hard to follow his train of thought. Questions in tests are way too hard. Easy quizzes but you must score perfectly or you won't get any point at all if you make only a small mistake. After the first test, I had to drop the class. Despite working extra outside of class and read 3 other books from the library, I couldn't score wel
Took a very theoretical approach to a very practical subject and ended up confusing everyone. Very disorganized with unclear due dates and grading policies and wandering, unfocused lectures. I got the feeling he didn't remember the course material very well and was trying to recall it as he went along. Be prepared to teach yourself from the book.
NEVER TAKE HIM EVEN THOUGH HE IS THE ONLY TEACHER TEACHING THE CLASS. He is really mean and rude towards people who are not that good at math. Biased towards certain people who sits in the front. He goes off tangent. Hated his class last summer. Worst teacher in the world. People flunked his class despite having open notes exam!Gives hard test
This professor is very respectful and sometimes he takes time out of the class to explain topics which not all the professors do. However his class made me regret to have chosen Comp Science as major thinking that Math 3A would be that hard. I am retaking this class and I see the great difference happily (More chances to pass).
Very out-of-line with text. On the other hand, in being out-of-line with the textbook, he gives an alternative angle to the subject. But he's not good at articulating what he's trying to teach or making test directives very clear (i.e., frequently ambiguous). Also, very disorganized and without a "flow" or progressive process to the content.
Linear is a difficult class, regardless of the teacher. Mr. Ting is willing to put in the extra time to help as long as you show initiative. If you are willing to work hard, he's a fantastic teacher. If you need it to be an easy grade... switch classes.
It seems like only the Calc students are complaining. His Algebra class is awesome, never thought I could ace a math test but his approach to math is very simple with common sense, he offers 1on1, gives 2nd chances, tries to make it fun. A math4b student told me he was awesome in that class too. Take him if you want to pass.
MOST HORRIBLE teacher ever. He thinks only who sit in front seats are A students.
I took math 4A with him. He has passion for math and teaching. He is very helpful and cares for the students. Sometimes he spend hours for a single problem which is boring. And his tests are ridiculously tricky. He grades bidders at the end of the semester and you shouldn't take that lightly like I did. Overall he is an interesting teacher.
Worst teacher ever! Any future students don't take his class. I wish had checked out his rating before I took his class.
I'm taking his MAPS Int. Alg. Your grade is directly related to your participation and effort in the classroom. He goes over every subject very thoroughly and he is always willing to explain again if needed. I don't know what my grade will be yet, but he is a great instructor. If math is not your forte, take his class. He'll help you through.
He is the best math teacher taken so far. Step by step guide, very helpful, he loves teaching. Show him that you are trying; he grades on participation too. Exams are not worth as much as homework and class work. ASK QUESTIONS and you will succeed! He's also very funny in class.
Simply put, this teacher will help you, if you are willing to help yourself. His exams are built around homework, and core principles of the material. If you do your homework, ask questions on the problems you do not understand, then the class should not be difficult. He gives open note exams (+final), but you still need to study for his tests.
This is a GREAT teacher. I will say that he does have his favorites. If you are on his good side he WILL take the time and help you as much as you want. His teaching and writing on the board is ALL OVER the place, but if you stay after class and have him go step by step you will get a lot out of him
At first ting was all over the place I did not undertand his work made us draw boxes which made it harder, after a while the work made sense, like him a lot
My first course in computer programming. Extraordinary educator and one of the finest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.
As I first entered the classroom, I was filled with joy. Learning the interesting subject they call "Number gibberish". That joy quickly diminished and was replaced with boredom and dread. After 6 weeks, I nearly cried. By week 9, I ran out of tears to cry due to dry tear ducts from the dehydration I was suffering due to the lack of excitement.
He favorites on the smart students, and ignores you if he thinks your not one of the geniuses. Places too much emphases on being an "A student". Isolates struggling students by giving extra credit to his favorite students during the class session with IQ questions irrelevant to the course. Here's a fair grade for you Mr. Ting.. C- try harder.
To begin with, I hate math. Alot. Never understood it, and never want to understand it. Mr. Ting does everything he can to help you as long as you put in the effort. He is exactly what a teacher should be.
I am an engineering student with good grades in Advanced Calculus and Physics. Mr. Ting made math undesirable for me. Be prepared to teach yourself from the book. His lectures tangent away from relevant material and his clarity is incredibly poor. He didn't even give our class grades for our 3rd test 3 weeks before the final. I give him a C-.
He is the best one math teacher when I met. However you need work so hard. Actually, you will learn more knowledge.
omg , he confused the hell out of me. I was totally obsessed with math plus a straight A student until i had him for 4A which I got my first C. Do not take him if you are looking for a professor who can really learn something from
When you take his class, he will teach really skill to learn or good idea in your life. He is a great teacher, and student who took his class. You will learn well. He is so awesome.
Mr.Ting is a really nice teacher. At first i really hate math however, he changed my mind and open new world for me to liking math even more.
He is awesome, and he try to teach how to learn new thing and use the math thought to explain this world. You must review his lecture note, and you will learn and get a grade in his class. He is a nice teacher.
He is so awesome. His lectures are knowledgeable and skillful. Go ahead, take his class. You won't regret.
Really boring and dull prof. When explaining the material, he uses the examples from the book by proving its right and not going over the steps normally as the book does. He loves to talk and is not helpful at all. Exams are way different from what he goes over in class, so be prepared to be surprised when doing the test. Do not recommend.
Take advantage of the structure of this course, you won't see hands on learning like this at a 4 yr institution instead you'll be left to your own devices. The structure mimics the team work setting at any tech company and inspires problem solving. Form a group and get together frequently, attend office hrs. He really cares about you learning
Karl ting must have been the most useless professor i have ever taken. He babbles during lecture rather than talks, you will not understand half of what he says. Extremely unorganized, writes all over the board without a consistent pattern. Explains the same concept over and over again as if the entire class is just one topic. Exams are unsolvable.
Doesn't give you any feedback on your grade. Quizzes are group quiz, the problems can be on a scale from easy to hard. His lectures are unclear and confusing. The midterm was average but the final is extremely hard and confusing. He is available to help you outside of class, and he may be able to clear some concepts. I don't recommend to take him
Professor is a nice person and means well. He is smart and knows the student's academic tactics. Lots of homework, but the course is very interesting and useful. There is no mercy when the professor grades the tests, absolutely ruthless, you must be meticulous with ALL your answers. If your mathematically gifted, take him, if not, look elsewhere.
Took Math 903 in Spring 2015. Mr. Ting truly values education especially the subject of Mathematics, he's always there to help and he's also great at giving advise. People you need to understand that your not in High School anymore! Your Instructors are not going to be chasing after you when your stuck or you need help. Be your own self advocate!:)
Took him for MATH 3A; assigns homework from textbook. His tests are hard, but as long as you do the homework and try your best, you'll do fine. I didn't like the combo reviews though, he graded hard on those. Easy A class. Rewards students for trying their best with extra credit on final
Knowledgable professor but you must stay on top of work in his class. Tests are graded with no partial credit, it's wrong, it's wrong, PERIOD. Not a class for slackers.
Mr. Ting is undoubtedly a very nice person. The major downside is that he is an awful teacher. He does try his best to create his presentations and teach you, but doesn't succeed. Most of my learning came from the textbook(if you don't use it well, you will not pass the class). Do all the extra credit, do the homework right, and ALWAYS participate.
He's a nice person but has mediocre teaching skills. It's great that he created those powerpoints but it left me more confused and had to self teach. He loves to throw curveballs on the exam and then expects you to master the material. Worse of all, you get little to no partial credit. Answers must be critically precise or you get points off.
Don't take his class unless you're a good self-learner. His teaching style is disorganized and confusing. His exams have nothing to do with homework and grades harsh. He says nonsense when explaining math saying "Ask Alex". Talks about networking and talking to people instead of teaching math.
Extremely nice guy, but his lectures are arguably useless. I self-taught 90% of the material. Plus his quizzes ask questions that have nothing to do with the material sometimes; they're literally trivia questions. He relays the importance of being a good student but cannot understand questions when they are asked. Get ready for no partial credit.
Hello all, Just to give you a heads up this teacher uses a very old grading system of his own. You dont know your grade until the class is over. Homework heavy, and makes his own tests so it will have very little resemblance to the book. Insanely hard final, kinda like a curveball. Not amazing with technology but he is a nice guy.
It is very hard for this teacher to teach, especially online and over the summer. He expects you to master the material, while throwing complete curveballs during the exam. Do not recommend.
Terrible lecturer. Also, his exams consist of curveballs and silly math riddles you have to figure out in span of 2 hours. No mercy in grading. Must be meticulous or you get zero points. Don't recommend any of his math classes.
Ting is a nice professor, but his teaching can be hard to follow. Lots of self-studying and usage of outside resources. Also, you do not see your grade until the end of the class :(
Mr. Ting is not a conventional professor. He doesn't give tests, and instead gives "breakout sessions" where you work on problems with others. He really focuses on writeups for the problems because he wants to know you understand the topic. He is a tough grader but a very realistic and inspirational person. He is tough to communicate with though.
He talks for the entire class
NOO! toughest grader ever, can't teach to save his life. I'm not sure if I'm gonna pass. worst mistake of my life. take him if you wanna fail! my whole class doesn't like him.
He lectures for the entire class but doesn't give tests. I could barely focus because he talks way too much and it gets boring. I didn't know my grade until the semester was over. He wants you to do write-ups for all the math questions. If you solve the problem and don't explain, your highest grade is a C.
