Really nice, patient, eloquenta and smart. To get an A attend all LABS, don't miss more than 3 classes (VERY IMPORTANT), complete fun zoo field trip assignment (depending on weather conditions) and study for all quizzes.

Her material coverd in her lectured are never on the test always read your book in DETAIL otherwise you wont pass her exams. The class field trip to the ZOO really helps out your grade so go to it. Also Do all your Labs its easy.

Genetics is hard enough and this woman adds to the confusion. Tests are extremely hard. She has in class "activities" and uses powerpoint. Very Boring class. Oh and you carry around a box of flies for an experiment.

A good prof. explains thro powerpoint. only whats taught in class comes on test. take good notes. thr's a field trip to the zoo too. thats a little tough. i got an easy A n learnt quite a lot. she makes stuff easy, that stays in the head for long.

Very tough, very fair, helpful if needed. Taking her classes taught me everything I needed for chem, bio 141 and 142. Much clearer than any other teacher I have had. Hard, tough, but you will learn.

Dr. Henthorn is one of the most compassionate and caring professors I have ever encountered. She is strict but fair. She teaches in a way that inspires you to learn and to continue learning. Without a doubt a person that you need to know.

Excellent and competent instructor. Not only are her power point notes impressive, she's able to elaborate on them. Sure her tests are difficult, but if you're there to learn, you'll study and be graded fairly!!! I'll be signing up for her BIO 102 next semester. :o)

It was unclear to me how to prepare for her exams. Her exam questions didn't always follow her notes. Remenber to solve related questions to the note at the back of book. She asked them at exam during my time. Maby giving me a sample of her exams would have helped me.

She is nice and her lecture is pretty good but her exams are not really easy. It does come from the notes but you have to memorize everything in the notes. she does prepare you for four year schools professors and you learn alot. I recommend her if you are planing to study. but if you want an easy A she is not the teacher for you.

Her lectures are never-ending. She is very mean, rude and will embarass you infront of the whole class if you ask a question that she thinks is a simple one. I would never recommend her. People like her should not be professors.

all you do is take notes from a powerpoint in lecture, you don't need the book, just study the notes for exams, she leaves during labs and its always hard to find her if you have a question or are ready to leave which is annoying. field trip to the zoo is annoying too. shes pretty nice but her teaching is boring. an easy B class. labs are easy A.

I don't know what they are talking about! Bio is hard and Complex with whoever you take. However, her grading system is designed for everyone to get a C minimum. I mean her test are scantron which includes true/false and mutiple choice. If you want an easy C in her class, you would be an idiot not to take her

she is the best biology teacher in NVCC. she is very nice as a professor and understanding. i like her way in giving the information that you need for the test based on her powerpoint presentation in the class. i register for her Cell biology 206 for this fall 2006 and i'm sure that i will enjoy it and i did in the bio 101 and 102.

DR. Henthorn is an excellent PROFESSOR who completed her Ph.D. in Human Genetics at UofMI in 1994, so I would tend to ignore the comments of someone who can't even look up a CV and thinks that a "teacher's" eating preferences are relevant. If you're prepared to work hard and actually use your brain cells, this is the class to take!

As a student from another college, I took Bio 101 during the summer with Dr. Henthorn. Her lecture style was very clear, her manner helpful and her class a pleasure to attend. I hope to take her Bio 102 class next summer.

I had circumstances that made it so I missed a months worth of class and she helped me to get back on track. She went as far as to ask me if I needed the textbook to borrow and lent me a cd on bio. She never asked for proof which she would have gotten anyway. She is fair but not for young chumps that still think school is free. Class isnt easy and

I come from another university, and I'm currently taking her class. Dr. Henthorn is a very intelligent woman and she knows her stuff (Very clear and concise.) She's fair to her students. Those who did poorly on her test is mostly because they didn't apply themselves...many prefer to be spoon fed. It'd be a pleasure if she taught at my university.

let me break it down to u. she is aight... took her in summer. 6 tests one everyweek. lots of notes. powerpoint. no book use. tests come from notes. lab is 30% of the grade. 6 tests. she drops ur lowest grade. 60% of grade. a field trip and she does makes u work 10% of the grade. u have to work to pass her class but she is not hard at all.

Took her class during summer and ended up with an A. Her lectures are very easy to understand. Her tests all come from the lecture and she drops the lowest one. The tests are hard, but if you study you will do fine. Zoo Field trip is a bleep, and lab is cake. When you finish in lab you just go. She never makes you redo a lab question or anything.

Take notes, make flashcards, study flashcards, get B. She condescends the hell out of her students, though, so if you're easily insulted I'd avoid her. She also hasn't mastered the fact that her students have jobs, and makes a pained face if you go to the bathroom during class. She's the most neurotic woman I've ever met.

She is a great professor she really knows her stuff. If you are into bio by all means take her you will learn alot. I am not interested in bio at all and I still did ok in her class. I have to say this she expects you to learn, so if you are not willing to put in any effort into bio then she is not a good choice but if you are you will learn alot.

I took Bio in the summer and got a B. I do not like biology and she made it so easy. The tests are right off the power points and there is a test each week. 6 tests and drops the lowest one. Fast and easy way to take bio even if you do not like it.

Lousy teacher MS. 3rd year Bio Major here. She deducts points for formatting in lab reports BEFORE she gives instructions. She thinks an 80% is a good grade. Will NOT listen to or change a student's grade but only becomes defensive. She micromanages and sets up labs because she doesn't trust students.

She lays out how she runs her class from the very beginning. Doesn't want people disrupting (getting up in the middle of class), notes should be read more than once to understand better, and tests come from notes, lecture, and a little lab. But that is true of almost all teachers! She is a clear, helpful, and funny. Very good teacher!

Dr. Henthorn is a great Bio professor. She is crystal clear, extremely helpful, and very intelligent. Difference from other Bio classes because she has a real passion for Bio and that element makes you do well in the class. Lecture and lab were awesome. Does great power point notes, but you have to attend class. She usually is late and disappears alot during lab. Went to ever class took all the notes and somehow still failed! Not very organized in lab. If you're taking the class cause you have to and have no interest in Bio whatsoever, find a differnet teacher!

she does give other assignments to help boost your grade (a little extra credit too), requires a field trip to the zoo (zoo lab-easy), and counts labs as points, and some other activities as well. On her exams I got a C, C, F, and probably F for the final but ended up with a C because she drops the lowest letter grade. Ohh and she doesnt give study

I didn't think she cared about the students. She was never in lab, and expected you to teach yourself. She is not very helpful and expects you to understand the material the first time she explains things. I would not reccommend her class. She is too cocky.

This teacher will be good or bad depending on whether you're a diligent student or not. The test are hard and they come from the PowerPoint, i wouldn't bother buying the book. She was helpful during lecture but never present during lab. She has a doctorate degree in Bio and speaks/explains in that level, so its a bit hard to catch up.

Buying the book is nigh useless. Lab book is required. The class itself is easy, but the teacher, while very knowledgeable, does almost nothing besides lecture. No study tools/guides, gone for half of the lab, etc. And everything is from powerpoints, so you don't really even have to show for lecture, just lab and tests.

If you need to take cell bio, take it with someone else. She's a nice person and all, but she is a terrible professor. Goes off on long rambling tangents that eat up a lot of class time, getting the class way, WAY behind schedule. My intro bio class covered the material in more depth. Also, disappears for lab a lot. Avoid.

If you can take cell bio with someone else, do it. She's a nice person, but a terrible professor. Goes off on tangents and wastes class time, and leaves you pretty unprepared for tests. We had to rush through the last 9 chapters of material in about a week. Avoid.

If you really want to get a good grade then take Bio with some one else.she waste all class time on slide shows and give exam question from book. she never prepare you for the exam no review or study guide. It takes days for her to email you back if you any questions. She is not helpful at all.

She has ridiculously high expectations because of her PH D in Genetics. She is nice, but a little self righteous. Brags a lot. "I went to school 7 extra years to be called Dr..." No study guides. Covers lots of material in a short period of time. Wastes time telling stories. Would only recommend if you are already very familiar with material.

Although I received an A in this class, I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone. She doesn't seem to care for her students' learning, she will not provide notes to you if you miss class due to being sick or any other reason. Hates it when you ask questions or when you ask her to slow down at lectures.

Everyone gave her such bad reviews but honestly, just show up to class, takes notes, and study. I failed almost all my exams but I still got a good grade because I showed up to class and did all my online quizzes and labs. Make sure she gives you credit for labs though. As long as you try hard, she'll give you a good grade. She is a sweet lady.

I took her class summer '12. Show up for every class, lab & field trip. There were 3 tests which only covered the chapters from the 2 weeks prior. I didn't really study, but got 100% in everything else and ended up with an 80%. She's very nice and knows her stuff. Although the summer is much harder, she grades more liberally.

Wasn't that bad. All you gotta do is follow her instructions in Lab and you'll get an A. Wasn't that helpful though. She has a slight annoyance when it comes to questions.

Dr. Henthorn is really knowledgeable and such an amazing teacher. Biology is not an easy subject, but she explains it so well that you would understand and learn it quiet easy. Exams are from the lecture notes which she posts online. Labs are interesting, and she explains exactly what she expects from you. Very fair at grading and is really kind.

Talks about her life too much. You're on your own for the labs. She reads it to you as if you cant read then goes off to read her books in her kindle. She also disappears a lot too. Lectures are dry as anything. avoid at all costs. Theres a field work going to DC botanic garden. SO ANNOYING. JUST DONT TAKE This class, you'll thank me later!!!!

Professor Henthorn is very knowledgable and went to William and Mary and it is quite apparent she is well educated. She is a nice person and her lectures were very interesting. The tests did get harder and it isn't straight from your notes some questions which was a little weird. SO much extra credit it's impossible for you to do bad. Overall good

Professor is knowledgeable and passionate about biology. The exams are hard and unpredictable since they're NOT based of notes, book or lectures. It's more than impossible to get any clarification and communication from the professor. How can one pass a test when everything seems like mystery in the class, or prof won't answer students' concerns

Her 3 tests have nothing to do with her lectures. She also does not answer her emails. Extra credit helps a bit, but when tests are 200 each, and almost nothing of what she teaches is there, it's hard to get a good grade.

All her tests are about 80 questions with like 10 of what she teaches are in there. The grade is based out of 1000 points. She gives extra credit, but it doesn't really help when she only gives you 5 points. Basically your grade is based on how do in her tests. Save your money and go with someone else.

This professor will give 3 hard tests with 100 questions on each of them. Nothing of what she teaches will be there. You basically have to teach yourself going over the powerpoints. Also her communication through email with students is non-existent. Take someone else.

Throughout the semester I thought I was failing because the exams require students to apply the knowledge learned in class sometimes the exam questions dont evem relate to lecture notes. No homework, sometimes extra credit assignments. Three 50 question tests one 100 q Final. Lectures are boring but she tries to make it fun. Labs take up a big portion of the grade. If you come to all the labs and you get 75+ in all exams you get an A. Tests not that hard, its pretty easy if you remember high school biology.

I took Dr. Henthorn for 101 and she was honestly a great choice. Her exams were difficult but if you manage to get an 80+ on all of them and participate, you should get an A. She gives massive amounts of extra credit and is very nice.

3 test and 1 final . each one worth 150 and I got 102,105,108 &99. she is amazing and give so many extra credit . No home work. lab are easy and fun .she respect all her student. understand you if you need any extra time to do your activity. highly recommended.

Took this hybrid class over the summer to transfer to my school. The material is so easy that it isn't a hard class. If you have taken any high school biology before, this should be an easy A. She gives tons of extra credit opportunities which was nice. Field trips were a waste of time, but good grade booster. She could do better at ending on time.

Professor Henthorn is amazing. The class was an easy A, I had over 1000 points out of 1000 at the end of the class. She gives lots of extra credit, flexible with material and even though it was a 5 week class, I didn't feel being rushed. She is passionate about biology and explains concepts in detail which makes the lectures interesting.

I took her 5-week class and I didn't feel overwhelmed or over-worked. I work a full-time job as well and she gives a lot of extra credit assignments, lab is easy and really just participation points, and she gives every opportunity to pass. Study your notes and read the book and its an easy "A". She gets off topic sometimes.

this prof isn't HORRIBLE but she isn't amazing either, she does give extra credit points/ assignments. she does not give study guides and her 3 exams are based on powerpoint slides that contain 30 or more slides and she isn't specific on what to study. labs are not that hard but you have to pay attention. final is accumulative with no study guide..

Dr. Henthorn is educated and have a strong background in biology. She tend to go off topic sometimes. Get ready to copy the powerpoint slides, cause that's what you're gonna study for your exams. She posted the pp on the bb though. I actually studied home on my own, but managed to get an A. She has a thing with attendance and leaving early.

Don't take her. Honestly, if your 5 point from failing the class she wont care. She gives plenty of extra credit but clearly didn't save me. Her test are ridiculously hard, she literally doesn't prep you at all. All she says/does for exam is "oh all the slides will be on the test" no type of preparation/help. I would never recommend.

She'd be a wonderful conference speaker but as a professor, her class could really benefit with some more structure & clarity. For every exam, I had no idea what would be on it & no study guide. A particular grader, so study class activities. On plus side, most assignments were graded by completion. Attendance points are essential; don't skip.

Not helpful at all. She gives us extra credit points but it doesn't do much unless you really know the material. She posts assignments last minute a day before you come into class and doesn't give a heads up on the assignments. Instructions are useless because it's printed, but when you ask her she expects something else.

a very smart woman, and clearly knows her stuff, but that information is not relayed to you in an effective way. labs are confusing and she is condescending when you don't understand. assignments are posted last min, and the due dates are always wrong so you never know when it's due. no guidance for what to study. class harder than necessary.

Professor Henthorn is an excellent professor. Hew knowledge is exemplary which translates through her lectures. Class is very engaging and interactive. The summer course is very dense, but the powerpoints and assignments made it easier to grasp the information. Tests were long, but reviewing lecture notes and textbook is the best way to prepare.

she is a nice professor that's for sure but she is not organized and she would post a homework online the say it's due that specific day but put at the bottom that it's due the next day to be honest her exams are far from easy it;s really hard and she doesnt tell you what to study for the exams and gives extra credits which doesnt really help .

While the professor was extremely knowledgeable about Bio 101 information it was as if she didn't want us to learn it or do well. She made everything much harder than it needed to be. No study guides or guidance for exams. Also 2 "mandatory" field trips on non scheduled class days. Disappear from lab and that gets upset when you complete it wrong.

Don't take Dr. Henthorn's class. I actually love Biology, but I hated this class. She talks down to students and tries to turn scientific concepts into fluffy watered down metaphors. She's very disorganized, forgets to post things, and doesn't correct her mistakes when testing students on material that she forgot to cover.

Really enjoyed taking Professor Henthorn's class. Attending class is the best way to get notes as slides are not always posted. Class activities always helped to solidify learning and hinted what to study for test. She offers extra credit. Overall, she is a great and knowledgeable professor!

She knows the material but cant really explain the material that well. She said that I could makeup a quiz that I missed because of a doctor's appointment and then at last minute she told everyone that no one can retake a quiz and never let me make it up. Her quizzes are a little tough as well, and her tests and 1-2 labs every week.

She is extremely rude to students and talks down to them when they try to tell her some concerns or questions about the class. She gives "Zoom activities" to make you participate, as well as a quiz. She completely locks assignments when they're due so you can't even turn them in late you just get a 0. Do not recommend, terrible experience.

the worst class to take during COVID. Your grade relies on participation points and HARD quizzes. She goes over class time, and doesnt care if you have another class - she'll still not give you points. Labs take time out of your daily life, and money. Very unfair with students who dont have great camera access. PLEASE do not take this class :(

Honestly thought this class was gonna be some slight but shes awful at grading. Literally gave half points bc we copied from the slides like its 9am Im tired then doesnt respond to emails regarding zoom activitys bc she doesnt wanna deal w it. Awful.

She's a tough grader, and you can't go back on quiz questions you've gone through during the quiz. You can't even review the questions you've got wrong AFTER the quiz. Grading process is horrible. She's condescending and rude towards students who try to ask questions regarding their grades. "I HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO YOU YET. DO NOT EMAIL ME ABOUT IT"

This professor would not even communicate through canvas, and when you would email her, she would reply only to a short portion and state the obvious. Not only that, but after stating my situation, she basically said "I can't do anything but good luck." Her tests are also the kind where you can only answer one question at a time for 50 questions.

Dr. Henthorn is an experienced geneticist who cares about her students and has high expectations for them. We had the opportunity to gene edit E. Coli, run PCR, and conduct gel electrophoresis. I would highly recommend reading the textbook. Many of these reviews seem to be from inept students who take issue with high expectations.

Prof. Henthorn, will explain in class everything you need to know. I learned that I really had to read my text book before and after class. I love the fact that she gives examples which allows you to relate in real life. If you want to learn, she is great.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT, WAIT FOR OTHER PROFESSORS TO BE AVAILABLE. She's passive-aggressive and will not care about you. She will take everything personally. Her labs are 4hrs and somehow, she always finds a way to be overtime, never met an unprepared, slower professor in my life. I'm not even over exaggerating her labs are always 4hrs+.

took micro w her and it was horrible. she lied to the class abt an optional test that would replace our worst test grade, was extremely passive aggressive and played favorites (to the point where u were graded by how much she liked u. this is NOT an exaggeration). everytime i asked her for guidance or help, she made a point of "ur on ur own".

Worst professor I've had at NVCC. She's rude and disrespectful to students. Always late. Slow grader. Assignments have poor and unclear instructions. She rambles during lab so they always go over time. For her NOVA Online class, there's zero instruction so everything you learn comes from the textbook. TAKE THE CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

She was a great professor in the sense that she gave instruction of what she wanted before the assignments were due. She does have a tendency to go on a tangent however that is because she is enthusiastic about what she teaches. Midterm & final worth a lot so do all the modules/study guides. Gives lots of extra credit & is lenient on deadlines.

Made us upload individual PDFs for each canvas quiz question which was tedious and unnecessary. Goes on tangents during lab which makes the experience draining and unnecessarily long. Labs could've regularly finished early, but kept us 4 hrs+ while sitting doing nothing part of the time. Nice but needs to be more reasonable, gets kind of annoying.

I don't recommend. Goes on long tangents resulting in her not getting through the material (despite it being a 3+ hour lecture). Slow to grade - did not have an accurate picture of my grade throughout. Enforces attendance through "activities" so you have to attend all lectures. Tests were difficult as well. Need to read the textbook to do well.

Dr. Henthorn's class was challenging but rewarding. The labs were long but engaging - we got to do hands-on work like gene editing and PCR. The textbook is essential, and Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, a tough but worthwhile course.

I had an unfortunate experience where she handled a minor situation in an unnecessarily aggressive and condescending way. I think she needs to seek mental help. I am concerned for the students that have took her classes and who else she has treated terribly. I am shocked she isn't fired yet with the horrible reviews. I reported her to the dean.

She talks too much and just keeps on rambling about random things that don't even relate to the lesson. Her exams are difficult and makes us have lab after the exam. She makes us print out our own lab papers but then makes us scan and upload it. Anyways after exams, we can hear her trash talk us to another person about how we suck and can't read.

Nice professor but horrible at teaching. She is very excited about what she does but will interrupt you when asking a question with an answer that is unrelated. When asked for clarity on an incorrect test question she said "I can't figure out how to do this right now but that's just how it is" Homework is tedious and will take all your time.

I tried to give Dr. Henthorn the benefit of the doubt given her ratings, but it seems she's taken on more than she can handle. She's consistently 15-20 minutes late to class and rarely ends labs on time, showing little regard for students' time. She's also not very approachable nor helpful in person. She seemed nice in theory, but a poor professor.

Very sweet and caring lady who knows a lot about biology. Attendance is graded, lecture heavy, gives massive amounts of extra credit, however she shows up late a lot and could be more organized. Labs are pretty detailed and take up a while but they're not hard. Overall, great professor.

Dr. Henthorn was one of my least favorite professors. Her teaching felt disorganized, with frequent irrelevant tangents, and she showed little concern for whether the material was clear or retained. No study guides were given and barely graded anything on time, on top of that she's a harsh grader. Please don't take this class.

Henthorn is routinely late to lectures, and starts labs late also. She had the audacity to show up 20 min late to our final exam, then delay it by another seven minutes. Absolute worst experience I've ever had with a professor at NOVA
