Mrs. Karstens is a wonderful professor who makes the environment very comfortable for students. She's really laid back. She gives about 20 quizes for this course and takes the 10 best. Her exams are like the quizes. Pretty easy. Barely any reference to the textbook. She's like a cool mom.

I took this course as a three hour night course and it was great, go to class and you'll pretty much nail down an A.

Don't take math at UVM from anyone but Ms. Karstens. If you want to learn, understand and do well. You have to try, but it will be fun a and instinctive after a while.

Karla was a great teacher, actually cares about students. Not hard at all, weekly quizzes (1 question) and they're directly from homework. Explains things pretty well. The quizzes are pretty much automatic 100% for 20 percent of your grade. Do some homework, study and you don't have to worry. Karla is also funny and gives good, clear lectures.

Amazing professor! I absolutely loved her! Take home quizzes are given at every class but they are only 5 questions and usually easy. She uses them to keep attendance. She is very enthusiastic about calculus which makes it more interesting than it is. She is very silly and makes the class a fun place to be! :-D

Karla is an amazing teacher! I didn't take math my senior year of high school, but before then I was into it a lot..until I got a bad teacher. Mrs. Karstens teaches with great clarity and makes things very easy to understand, but you still learn a lot! You do use Course Compass, so you'll need to buy a textbook unfortunately for HW.

Mrs. Karstens is the best math teacher I've had since middle school. Made everything really clear and was always available for extra help if you need it. Super accomodating to students needs and will like you even more if you do the work and ask for help when you need it. I've not a math lover but she made me want to go to class. Take her class!

Attendance is NOT mandatory, but DO go, the test is basically everything she covers in class. She explains things CRYSTAL CLEAR and does VERY helpful in class problems and review worksheets. She is a great teacher. Homework is through course compass, very easy to get 100% on all the home works which makes it a great grade booster. She is very friendly and if you need help on a problem or question she is very eager to help. No quizzes just test, she holds test reviews which covers everything on the test. Overall great teacher.

TAKE HER. Easy if you're ok at math. She's more like a mom than a teacher. Very clear. Goes slow enough. 3 tests 15% each, quizzes given every thursday 15% (best out of 10 - we took way more than ten), 15% online homework (course compass easy 100%), final 25%. Easy A.

Karla is fabulous. She really cares about her students and she's funny as well. Her tests are really reasonable and she's just all around great. She sometime brings in candy!

This class was really easy especially with Karstens. She gives review sheets of what will be on the exam. She is a fan of hw quizzes that are not too difficult to complete and can boost your grade. I found this class to be pretty easy and Karstens was amazing and so energetic given that it was a 9:35 AM class.

Karla was so much fun! She explains the material in simple terms and then walks you through several examples so you can really grasp it. She's always very optimistic and usually over-the-top peppy. My favorite professor of the semester!

Taking a class with Karla is like being taught by your mom, it is awesome. She explains things in the simplest, easiest way and spends a good amount of time going through examples to make sure you understand it. She gives out candy like once a week AND you don't have to buy the textbook! The class is a breeze and Karla is excellent.

This is the easiest class I have ever taken. It was extremely helpful for me as an incoming Elementary Ed major. She taught us a lot methods to use in the classroom. There was rarely any homework and the quizzes every few weeks were self-explanatory. Greatest class.

Karla is so great; she always reviewed before the quizzes and gave us a break during class (3-hour Monday night class). Incredibly simple concepts and makes sense with its real-world applications. My lowest grade was that one time, I got a 9/10 on a quiz. HIGHLY recommend this course.

Easy concepts. She reviews before exams and gives a fair amount of online homework to help your grade. If you go to every class you will pass. It fairly easy to get an A in this class. Though she does go on tangents, Karstens is the best math processor at UVM. She really wants students to succeed and loves to see students trying hard in the class. Definitely attend lecture, she appreciates it and does notice. Very bubbly personality. Weekly quizzes and exams are extraordinarily easy. Take her!

She is very nice and an easy grader but I feel that she does not challenge her students. Coming from a town that is very competitive and hard working, I felt that she was too easy of a teacher. She is funny but tends to go off topic a lot during class.

She was very goofy, and often went off topic, but that is what made her class so much fun to go to. She is a very understanding grader, and is willing to give points back on a test if you talk to her about a misunderstanding. She often gave out candy. Even though she is nice, don't skip classes on Friday, because she gives a quiz every Friday.

Karla is goofy, and her anecdotes make going to class worth it. She has a motherly concern for her students, but in a tough love way. She is extremely clear in her explanations of derivatives and limits and the such, and if you do the work she gives you, then you will not only pass but have a good understanding of the subject.

Karla is hilarious and personable while teaching math. She is crystal clear with her lectures, and her quizzes and tests are NOT out to get you AT ALL. You will easily pass the class if you show up and pay attention, and you will actually learn while doing it.

Karstens is so nice and helpful. I took 019 with her last fall, copped a B and didn't try, then 020 with a different professor in the spring and had to withdraw. Took 020 again this spring with her and have given basic effort and showed up for class and have an A. She is extremely transparent and is not out to get you. Definitely take this class.

She has the personality of a teacher. While it is not a hard class if you pay attention, grading is very vague on tests. She will screw up in notes and has to be corrected. Gives weekly quizzes that have no partial credit, so be ready. Will slip into a condescending attitude, and often talks down to students. Easy course if you can put up with her.

I love Karla! I have taken MATH 019020 and STATS 111 with her. She is clear cut and her notes are easy to follow. Her grading is very fair. As a person who was very nervous to take college level math I have done very well thanks to her teaching style. She is very flexible, will go out of her way to help and wants to see every student succeed.

She never puts a trick question on a quiz or test; it's always something she's taught you. Only buy the "My Math Lab" access code. She'll even tell you not to buy the text

College Geometry is something to take, only if required. Course was really easy, just kind of a waste of time, as I knew the material from high school, and didn't learn anything about teaching, which was the point. Tests, except for the first were take-home. The book is free online free as a PDF- you do not need the hard copy.

Karla is seriously one of the most amazing professors at UVM. She is always there to explain anything that is unclear. Don't bother with the textbook, I never opened mine. What makes her so spectacular is that I missed my final (got the time wrong) and she was so understanding and let me take it the next day with no questions asked.

I LOVE KARLA KARSTENS. I was never a fan of math but I had her for a big Math019 lecture and she made what I used to consider a boring subject, very engaging. I have her for Math020 right now and she knows everyone's names. She drops the 2 lowest quiz grades (quizzes every Friday). Hands down, best math teacher I've ever had. and shes hilarious

She is the only professor I've had that's managed to make a big lecture something that I actually look forward to. She has a happy energy about her that is contagious. She is very transparent about what will be on tests and exams and if you do the homework, you'll be completely prepared even without further studying.

I love Karla! She is funny, knowledgable, and makes math bearable. She loves what she is teaching and is always willing to help you out, but makes you work for it. I had a concussion partway through the year and was out for a week and not able to do math for a while, and she went out of her way to work with me and help me get back into it.

Professor Karstens is amazing!! She posts detailed notes online so you really don't need to show up to class (no attendance taken). Quiz every Wednesday and tells us exactly what's on it. Great study guides. Super funny/chill but try and cheat and she will catch you. No any partial credit when you get things wrong which can kill your grade.

Karstens was a great professor. Calculus is very hard but she made it clear and her test are very straight forward, if you understand the material well you will do well. She is easy to meet with outside of class and really wants you to do well. She does make some stupid jokes but she's good at teaching math and is a fun person.

Her tests and quizzes are fairly easy as long as you pay attention in class. She was very accommodating when I asked to take a quiz very early one morning so I could make my Thanksgiving train ride home! Highly recommend!

I had to retake this class because the first time I took it I had a gradstudent as a professor, but with Karla I ended up with a 95 in the class. The quizzes can be a bit difficult, but the tests are all about making sure you understand the material. She's awesome, I would definitely recommend!

It is not hard to do well, there is basically no homework unless you do optional "practice" and the tests and quizzes are short and identical to, if not easier than, the review. She wrote the textbook and while it's good, its just not necessary for the class at all, don't buy it.

I loved Karla! The only downside is that she is a Vikings fan, and is very open about it. All of her lectures were extremely straight forward and were accessible online after the class. I absolutely loved Karla's class! I fell a little bit behind on my midterm with her, but I met during office hours and she was so helpful with going over material and understanding what went wrong. She is so fun in lecture and made me love calculus. I wish I could take every class with her.

Professor Karstens is the first math teacher I've had who's been able to explain material in a way I can understand! She cares about all of her students and is accessible outside of class. She makes dry math lectures fun and lighthearted with jokes and understandable analogies and has fairly easy tests if you understand the material. Dont get the textbook, just get the access code. Im a political science major and got an A- despite never getting an A in math during all of high school. That said, I almost never missed class. Shes chatty and infantilizing but her personality is different than her knowing math really well and teaching it really well. No partial credit on tests.

Karla is literally so funny and will just say something random about her life. Her classes consist of her teaching material and LOTS of examples which i found so helpful. Makes math easy and fun. I struggled very badly in calc 19 being taught by a grad student so I was nervous for math 20 but she made it a breeze. You can tell she really cares about her students and if we understand the material. Also makes a lot of funny jokes to keep class entertaining.

Karla is actually one of the kindest people I have ever met and made this class so easy and enjoyable. I do NOT consider myself great at math whatsoever but she made the class extremely understandable and was willing to work with me outside of class. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone looking to enjoy calculus.

I absolutely love this woman. One of my only UVM professors that has ever seemed like they actually care about the people in the class and subject she is teaching. I have hated math my whole life and she made me love it.

Karla is probably the best math teacher ever. She engages with the class and explains everything super clearly. I was nervous about the class because I've never taken calc/pre-calc but it's the class I stress about the least. Tons of in-class review before every test and the tests are as simple as a calc test can be. Just don't miss class!

Ive never had such an amazing professor. She genuinely cares about her students and does everything she can to make sure you don't fail. She believes in all of her students and notices when something is wrong. Her teaching style is amazing. I've never been able to understand math until her. On halloween she gave us candy!

When I took pre-calc it was basically Algebra so when this class began I was very scared. She was so kind and really wanted everyone to do well. The study guides are very similar to the tests, so if you can do those, you're good. You definitely have to study though. I went to the TA every week to go over the material. I 100% recommend her though!

I love Karla!!! She is the sweetest professor and will explain difficult concepts in an easy manner. She is such a personable professor and loves interacting with her students. She will give as much partial credit as possible to you in exams as well. It's relieving to have a professor you know is on your side academically!

I was nervous going into college math but Professor Karstens made it easy. She is so kind and the class is very easy. The class before the test, she goes over everything on the exams. The lectures are fun and I would recommend going because she will leave hints as to what will be on the exam.

I adore Karla, she somehow made me love math class. Her teaching style is amazing, she teaches as if we had never learned the content before (as she should, but sometimes teachers/professors don't for some reason), breaks down the concepts, and alleviates any possible worries/concerns you may have. Tests are relatively easy. Favorite Professor.

I LOVE KARLA!! She is such a kind person, and her classes are so fun and easy. She reviews everything that will be on the test, sometimes even giving us huge hints of exact problems. She always goes on random tangents and tells funny stories. Best calc teacher ever.

I love this woman. I literally CANT do math and somehow she made it doable for me. She's so funny and sweet and made me love coming to class despite hating math. She also offers online zoon options for every class which is so nice.

Amazing teacher. Cared a to about every student. All you had to do was show up to class and give half a crap and you would do well.

Karla is the biggest sweetheart in the math department at UVM. I really struggle with math and I didn't do amazing by any means in calc, but she does put in a lot of effort to be there for her students, not to mention she's super personable and hilarious. unfortunately its her last semester, but a total angel. I loved her :)

Absolutely love Karla. It's a shame it's her last semester, but she was always hilarious in class and engaged with the students. One of the best professors I've had.
