Karla is amazing! She is patient and explains the material really well. She is always available to answer questions and extremely understanding. I'd take her for any math class she offered.
karla is amazing!!!! she is helpfull, kind and really cares about her class and how well we do.
Not so amazing! instead of help you just get told "do more practice" how do you do more when you don't know how to do them in the first place? I'm a hard worker... even with a tutor... her class bites!
This teacher was pretty tough. I stuck it out the whole semester and had a tutor and still failed. She is too fast paced and doesnt take the time to fully make sure everyone is on track.
She is horrible! Not guidance for the class at all. Karla is very fast-paced, and rude in person. She spends 10 minutes quickly teaching a lesson, and then just leaves the classroom when she's done, so you're on your own if you don't understand something. Do not take this teacher!
One of the absolute worst teachers I have had in my life. She is rude when you ask a question and she is condescending. She routinely left the classroom up to half an hour early while we were left to figure math out on our own. It felt like she was bored with teaching. Do not take this teacher!
Demonstrates how to do work well. Has class work together so you can figure out what material you need help with BEFORE you leave class to go home and do your homework. Math XL has unlimited attempts as well, so it is easy to get 100% if you are persistent. Will help outside of class and is very nice. Recommended.
She moves too fast and expects you to fully understand a new concept.Several times she says this should be review or practice more. She has been behind podium for to many years, she should be a student again to see how it feels. I have a tutor provided by the college and now I'm paying for a tutor also just to pass the class.
she is my favorite math teacher i have ever had. she is very knowledgeable on the subject and cares about her students.
Karla is a very interesting teacher. The first day I thought she was extremely rude and tried my hardest to find a different teacher. I ended up having to stay and although she pleasantly surprised me, I don't absolutely recommend taking her class.
Carla Rocks!! Trig is a difficult subject anyway. She was very helpful when needed and she also records all of her lectures so one can revisit any "sticky" points. She does tend to go quickly but there is a lot of material to cover in an hour. If you like to screw around in class do not take her class. tough class but I recommend her highly!
She is AMAZING! Show up, do the homework, and ask her questions, or for help, and you WILL pass! She doesn't make things super easy, but she knows how to explain things in many different ways and is great at keying in on where people are missing a concept or key pieces. She gets you to visualize how all of Trig works!
Karla is pretty good at explaining things, however, she expects you to get it right away which is not the greatest thing for those who struggle with math. One thing that I didn't appreciate though is that for exams, she has her students practice for speed rather than accuracy so she can cram an excessive amount of material in her tests... not cool!
Formally a High School Mathematics Teacher. She explains very well and helps when you ask. I would definitely take her again.
She did a good job of teaching the class. Had the class do a lot of problems in small groups around the classroom. Not a very effective way of teaching. She was really nice and helped if you looked for it. She wasn't necessarily a bad teacher, but I wouldn't say she was a great one.
Her favorite line is "do more practice". I did not enjoy this class or her teaching style at all.
Tough instructor. Gives minimal homework. Has a tendency to stop in the middle of instruction an give the answer to the example problem without finishing how to properly solve the equation. Textbook required hardly used, only used in class, never for homework. All homework in through an online software so she doesn't even grade it.
Very clear and explained how to solve problems multiple ways which is awesome.
Adore her. Always friendly and willing to help, as long as you do try on your own first. Practicing on your own will help you a ton, and when she sees effort she's the most helpful teacher around. One of my favorites, was really disappointed she wasn't teaching Calc I this semester. She's one of my favorite teachers.
Had absolutely horrible experience. Rude to students. Appears helpful in class but one-on-one doesn't like taking time out of her schedule to explain things. Met once outside class and she was very short with me. Thought I was doing fine grade wise only to find out it is weighted and I am failing, and she never mentioned this at start of semester.
She changed the dates of tests
She is definitely rude to students. She is a good teacher though, her lectures and notes are clear. Going in for help is hard, she is intimidating and not very patient. She has legit mood swings though so beware. Honestly if you are a good student you should be fine though.
She was never available and when she was, she did not want to answer questions or be helpful in any way. The homework never corresponded with tests and in class lectures.
Shes alright, but she gets mad to easily. She grades work easier then my other classes because she went off of work shown instead of answers only. Shes nice, but just a little stricter than most teachers.
Condescending comments on graded work. Doesn't answer questions when emailed. Lectures are regurgitation of book definitions (reads them to you), on top of that they are very short and unclear. She then gives kindergarten version of a couple examples (much harder content in homework). She stops recording lecture before doing examples. Online class.
Teach yourself the concepts from the textbook. Karla never really explains anything in detail and blows through examples. Her test questions are vague and in a completely different format than what is shown in class, so be prepared for the unexpected. Gets defensive when questioned. Probably the worst instructor I've had all through college.
Not terrible. I'll agree with others in that she gets very defensive if you present issues with the class to her. Is rather unapologetic if you don't understand something. She does take the time to explain concepts, but if she doesn't believe you're making an effort then she doesn't either.
Karla is avery unpleasant person to deal with. This is the second time for me taking this course and I wish I would have taken the same instructor I had the first time. I know less now than when I started the class.
I already knew most of the stuff for this class from high school, but if I hadn't already had it, I would be lost. Most of my class mates seem lost and she does not seem to care. Terrible attitude.
Karla gives a difficult course. This was the first college math class I ever had to take and so that was something I had to get use to. Overall, she's capable of helping her students, but I'll agree that she is impatient with how fast you are in responding to her help. Also, her shared office is crazy busy and the worst possible place to get help.
Karla was a fantastic teacher I would 10/10 take another class with her. She said to me that you either get an A or an F. If you actually put in the effort, you'll do well. She keeps you accountable and she gives you opportunities to redeem yourself. YOU have to do the work though. It is definitely work but we're in college, people.
I had Karla for my first semester at NIC and took Calc I with her and I really liked her. She was logical and to the point and made sure you were accountable. Do the work and put in effort and answer questions. She will help you if you will help yourself. She makes her students learn how to work to succeed. A wonderful teacher.
It is a crime to charge students for this class the way Mitchell teaches it. You might as well set up a website and have a monkey monitor the class, for all the help or instruction she gives. If you need this class, you'd be better of taking it at the zoo.
Mitchells website is very disorganized and hard to navigate. I prefer a more organized layout and better lesson videos than I am getting in this class. I hate the online homework.
This is a rough online class. Very little help is given from the teacher, it is mostly online book online homework do it yourself. Good luck if you choose this class.
This is my second time in this class and already I am not getting it. I wish the teacher was more approachable but she is not. I have a tutor and if I make it through this class it will be thanks to my tutor because the teacher is really scary.
Worst instructor ive ever had
The use of the digital book and digital homework enabled this teacher to have minimal contact with students. While teaching myself the content, I like to imagine her sitting alone, eating bonbons. I received no help at all from this teacher, and should have taken it from someone more engaged in the actual work of teaching students.
I need to pass this course to continue toward my degree, and this teacher was not helpful to that goal. I even formed a study group outside of class, watched online videos to help, went to tutoring, but it seemed like the teacher wanted the students to fail. Terrible attitude, terrible class.
I had trig in high school and its just not that hard. Mitchell makes it harder than it has to be--almost as if it makes her feel smarter than us. The materials provided on the webpage are not very helpful or extensive. Its sink or swim with Mitchell, your on your own to learn this stuff.
Mitchell seems to have neither teaching skills nor the basic communication skills to successfully deliver this course. Take the reviews seriously and find another teacher if you need this class.
Wow, I get along with everyone, but this woman take the cake for bad personality. She seems to agress as a cover up for her lack of teaching ability. Bad choice, take the class from someone who can teach.
I miss having a teacher who took an interest in students. Mitchell is all about telling students to figure it out on their own. Doesn't even grade homework, lets the computer do it for her.
Amazing teacher! However, you have to work for your grade. She will give just as much effort as you do. Most, if not all of her homework has unlimited attempts so although there is no extra credit opportunities, you can have 100% in everything at home which is very helpful if you flunk one test (as I did). Recommend, just be expected to work hard.
She makes math worse than it has to be. and makes students feel bad about themselves.
Oddly aggressive, this teacher seems to resent having to teach this course. She gives students the feeling that the material is beneath her and that it is so obvious she should not have to explain it at all. I hate coming to this class because I leave it feeling bad about myself.
Shes a strict teacher but overall the only teacher to be able to have me understand algebra.
She made me uncomfortable in class. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but found her to be mean spirited. Her lectures lack any sense of understanding of how students learn.
I was in her class for two days then dropped. I knew I would hate this class. She would not explain anything at all she would have a question and then simply solve it and not even tell us how she got the answer. If you are bad at math and need an explantion on how to get an answer right she is not for you
I stuck with it when so many students dropped her class, did all the work, got tutoring, but probably won't pass. She's one of the worst communicators I've ever encountered. terrible teacher.
If you show you are working your hardest she will help! Would not recommend if you do not do well with strict professors/personalities. Uses MML and most homework has unlimited attempts until test date. Can come across as rude, but will help you regardless as much as you need. Took her for 108 and 143 and really felt like I had an understanding.
This is a terrible teacher. Not only was she barely there for our class. I worked for ten hours on her practice final exam, only to find out that, oops, sorry guys, she gave us the WRONG TEST. It was from a higher level of math. No apology, just "here's another practice test". No admission of wrongdoing. She's awful.
Mitchell is insane. She posted the wrong assignment with a two hour deadline to turn it in. IT WAS THE WRONG ASSIGNMENT/TEST, FOR ANOTHER CLASS. An hour later she posts another one THAT WILL NOT OPEN and extends the deadline by 30 minutes. She's crazy.
I do not recommend this instructor to anyone who wants to be treated with respect. She is a Jekyll and Hyde type, one day decent, the next day she'll treat you like trash. Never admits when she makes a mistake. Basically a weak person who should not be given responsibility for the development of other humans.
I am mad at myself for wasting money on this class. The instructor was not helpful, the homework was online and gave us no feedback from the instructor. This is a bad choice. Take this class from a different school, not from here.
I found her class to be challenging, so I would not take this course unless you are committed to working hard. She works as hard as you do; I found her very easy to communicate with because she makes herself accessible to you. Sometimes she can be a little unclear, but overall, she keeps to her syllabus which is extremely helpful.
Avoid this professor at all costs! She was ALWAYS 10-15mins late to class, however still will dock you if you are even 5 mins late to class. She regularly ignores the curriculum to instead teach her own way, which is wrong half the time. She writes her own homework, gives extra just for fun and is an extremely technical and difficult grader. AVOID!
Mitchell is the worst type of teacher, very full of herself and her own importance. Unless you are one of her special buddies, she will not give you the time of day or even answer questions about the material. Her teaching is helter skelter, a real train wreck and her grading is never consistent. Avoid at all costs.
I had the impression that I was a bad math student because some important parts of concepts were not explained fully. I was not sure if this was just common knowledge or unclear explanations. I had to spend a lot of time teaching myself and asking my friends for help. This class could have been a lot better with clearer explanations.
Taking this woman's class was an awful experience for someone returning to school from a few years' hiatus. All she did was recycle some ancient lectures and assign homework that was completely different. Tests were insanely overvalued and graded way too harshly. If you didn't follow her EXACT desired method, you didn't get full credit. Stay away!
I wish I had read the reviews before signing up for this teacher. She is terrible online and I can only imagine how she would be in person. Mitchell has a bad reputation around campus among students, but I thought I could just teach myself. It's a rare thing when the teacher makes learning more difficult than teaching yourself. She is confusing.
Worst online class I've ever had. I don't get the idea Mitchell would be any better in person. Avoid her at all costs.
really disresfectful and rude
Not sure why she teaches when she has no people skills or ability to deal with people (students) respectfully. Don't take Mitchell for any class. You'll regret itt.
Horrible. She dropped me because I "didn't do my work" which is further from the truth, I turned everything in before it was due. NIC tried to help me get back in her class, but her sad excuse was "there's an exam tomorrow that I'd feel uncomfortable with her taking." She doesn't respond to emails, and if she does it is a one-word answer... sad.
Such a caring and dedicated math teacher. I'm not good at math, and she was ready to help whenever I needed a little extra guidance. Would absolutely recommend her class.
Bad teacher, unpleasant person.
I had the content mastered. Missed an exam for my father who died. She said no excuses and gave me a zero. Terrible terrible terrible professor. Turned an A into a C. She's the worst math professor at the school by far hands down. Rude short and mean with students, explains new concepts way too fast avoid avoid avoid
Online classes are usually flexible. I emailed her and asked if her test dates were available for change because my job schedules a month out and I would not be able to make the very small test window she had scheduled and after waiting 5 days she sent back "test dates are set dates" and dropped me from her class. Don't waste your time
Need to go to lectures to learn certain math problems. Available after class and wants to make sure that you know what you are doing. The textbook is online and even has step by step ways to help you solve the problem. Down to earth and wants you to pass.
Karla's personality is a hindrance to her ability to teach in that students who need help cannot easily get it from Karla. She seems to have animosity for students generally and an attitude of disdain for those who need more help. Her online classes are a nightmare to navigate.
Karla is hard to learn from and meeting with her is scary. She has a way of making students feel like dirt for bothering to ask her for help. She seems to think she is somehow above others and wants you to know it.
Her aggro attitude made it hard to learn from her. People are already on edge about math, so her negativity made that harshness over the top. I could not learn from her and others in my study group seemed to feel the same way.
I have never taken a class where the teacher gives you a quiz on material - and grades you on said material - a day before you start the next unit. BUT HERES THE CATCH: the quiz is on the material that you are learning in the next week. SO YOU ARE BEING QUIZED ON MATERIAL YOU HAVE NOT YET LEARNED AND GRADED FOR IT. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Not very approachable nor helpful despite appearing so at first with offers to meet, etc.
As another student mentioned, you will be tested on material you have not yet learned. Hard to believe but it's most definitely TRUE. I'm an 'A' student and an excellent organizer and worker in my classes and yet I was shocked to see items on the quiz that I was not familiar with only to find them in the next unit's material. No excuse for it.
Responded to 2/7 of the total emails I sent, with curt responses that didn't even address what I was asking about. Ignored any emails that slightly inconvenienced her. Never discussed her late work or grading policies. The only "teaching" she did was (sometimes) posting recorded lectures from five years ago. Doesn't care about her students at all.
I took this class online over the summer. It was by far the easiest math class I've taken. She was able to meet with me right away when I needed help and was very nice. I was very scared to take this class with how many bad reviews she has, and that math is a weak spot for me. She respond right away and grade the mid term and final fairly quickly.
Worst math teacher I have ever taken! Spends lecture time not even teaching material just going through examples yet says attendance is mandatory but also ends almost every class after less than 30 minutes. Is super unhelpful and doesn't actually respond to questions when you email her. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Although I only got a C in the class, Mitchell was always there when I needed help. She truly wants her students to succeed in the class. The work is hard, but if it takes time to do it, you can get a good grade; plus, she is always willing to meet after class on zoom or in person, which is helpful.
By far one of the least able teachers I have ever encountered. Her classes are short and disorganized. If you ask a question in person during office hours or by email, she is equally unwilling to answer. What am I paying for? She seems to be on a permanent vacation inside her own brain.
Cannot miss class even if its a personal emergency no matter the severity, super confusing course material, hard for the first part of semester but gets easier, no extra credit and occasionally late work is allowed depending on assignments. sometimes felt like this class sets you up for failure.
Mitchel makes this course unnecessarily difficult. It's like she tries to obscure the content rather than elucidate it. Simply terrible.
Mitchell is terribly awful at teaching. She is unapproachable when asked for help and the amount of problems expected of students is ridiculous. One of the worst teachers at this school.
We just had our midterms for the summer and she gave us a midterm review practice and we were allowed a note card for the test. I expected the midterm to be on majority of what the practice she gave us but no. The entire midterm had only one question that related to the practice, this exam set everyone up for failure.
Professor Mitchell was a good teacher she is a tough grader. I took her online course over the summer. You have to do the work and dedicate a lot of time when it comes to the homework. I learned most of the material from videos attached to the questions. If you take down notes, formulas, steps, and learning to use the T84 calculator you will pass.
One of the worst online courses at NIC, this class could vie for the least effective instructor in the history of education. Lots of homework, very little help, tests were unfairly based on one or two concepts, when each chapter involved at least twenty key concepts.
Horrible teacher. Does not care about her students, incredibly rude and dismissive if you have questions. Left my emails on open more times than once. DO NOT TAKE KARLAS CLASS. She is not a good or kind person as well as teacher.
Awful. DO NOT TAKE WITH HER. For my last project I was unaware that I had submitted my project in the wrong format. Rather than kindly letting me so I could immediately resubmit it she failed me. She was very uncaring and NOT Student centered. Don't waste your time.
Avoid this professor at all costs. She does not care about her students at all. She does not answer questions, and more than that she is dismissive and will belittle you for trying to seek help. She does not respond to emails, she shows up to class late consistently and leaves early so she is unavailable. She might be THE worst professor at NIC.
Impossible to get needed help, demeaning, recorded lectures need to be better, does not respond to emails. I have had to message her multiple times with questions and some I never got responses on.
Karla Mitchell is the hardest teacher and will not work with you. Hard to get ahold of her. Takes forever to respond. I will end it here because I have nothing else nice to say.
She is the exact opposite of a good teacher---does not care, cannot explain concepts, unfair grading, unkind personality. She might make a good prison guard
STAY AWAY FROM THIS DUMPSTER FIRE OF A PROFESSOR!!!! This professor will not respond to emails, is demeaning to students, will NOT provide any sort of answer to questions on the rare occasion you do get a response from her and are usually watch the lectures which are recorded, jumbled messes from her in person classes. Insanely rude to students.
RUN AWAY FROM DUMPSTER FIRES!
This professor is extremely rude and short when it comes to responding to emails. She has a mix of her recorded videos from her other semesters in the summer class. Very confusing! specially if your still learning your ways around canvas.
This is such an awful professor. She will take any reason she can to not grade something all together. On 4 occasions she gave me a zero on work with no explanation. I got in contact with her about it and it was such a fight to get her to fix HER mistakes. She gives incredibly unhelpful feedback on the rare occasion you can read the handwriting.
Karla is an instructor the school cannot get rid of, so she talks down to students and loves to let everyone know her time is more valuable than theirs. She's the most unhelpful professor on campus and will not respond to emails! If you are not great at math, be ready to go to the math center to actually learn. They're a lot nicer there, too.
The class itself the way it's set up you won't fail since you can retry the homework and the reading quizzes. BUT she will not explain anything to you and just tells you to refer to the videos in that course section which mostly are not helpful. She takes 3-5 days to respond to an email, she will not tell you what missed on a written test.
Wasn't not helpful at all. Very poor communication, wouldn't respond at all or sometimes respond weeks later.
I took this class twice with her! It was awful, but I needed to take the online math class. She does not communicate at all, she is a tough grader, and overall, she was rude and felt like I was talking to someone that didn't care or even try to care about her students. I would not recommend.
Mitchell is one of the worst teachers at NIC because she does not care about student learning and she does not have the skills to teach students the material for the courses. It's a mystery why they keep her on.
I took Math 123 online with Karla Mitchell. Her lecture videos weren't very helpful, and I ended up spending more time teaching myself and going to the tutoring center. When I emailed her with questions, responses were delayed and not very helpful. More engaging videos and timely feedback would have greatly improved my learning experience.
DUMPSTER FIRE INSIDE OF A DUMPSTER FIRE EMITTING TOXIC FUMES!!! Run (don't walk) away from this professor!! Do NOT waste your money on a class taught by a professor who is demeaning and will make it very clear it's an inconvienice to help you if you ask for help. Take this clas with another professor.
Worse class I have ever taken, I've never fail a class before I took Karla's class. I had to take this class twice in order to get my credit and even taking it a second time it was still very difficult to work with her.
Personally I would avoid this professor if you're a first year college student. She can be impossible at times to get ahold of. Multiple times throughout the semester I would email her or even message through canvas and I would receive no response back. She will not own up to her mistakes.
Student learning is not a goal for this instructor. She lacks empathy and insight, which are both needed for successful teaching. I used to love math before taking her class, but now I avoid it at all cost. She does not use any teaching practices that enable students to succeed. It's like being force fed, even if the food is good, no one likes that
This professor is quite difficult. The lectures are confusing and unhelpful, while emails go unanswered. However, using tools like Unstuck AI for study prep can make the class more manageable.
this teacher does not even know math. how do i get 7/8 on a hw and she gives me 7/50. MATH IS NOT MATHING!!!! omg and she even got mad at me for having knee surgery and changing testing day. i cannot stand her
she will say one thing for directions and then change it without any warning and just expect us to know
The expectations for each assignment seem unclear at times. The lack of clear feedback complicates the issue, as it's hard to improve. The sheer volume of homework she assigns only adds to the pressure. There's a lot of assignments which are difficult, given the lack of clarity in her explanations.
idk how she has a job here still. everyone i have ever talked to about her has had negative experiences with her. never responding, says if she helps you with a question you don't get any points (hello you're a teacher that's literally what you do is TEACH),she's mean, and does not care about her students or her students futures. i hate her and math
