She is a very fun English teacher. I enjoyed the literature we read in her clas. She is super nice and friendly.
Very fun teacher. Gives extra credit and doesn't grade too tough. Makes the English language more interesting than is.
She's awesome! Totally funny and awesome!
Very fun teacher.Isn't hard like most english teachers. You will enjoy her class.
Karma is so far my favorite professor at Davis. She is so fun and funny. Her classes are the best. She is not a very hard grader and teaches well also. You learn alot from her calss
She makes you write a lot. I had her for Workload and even though she didn't really prep us for the Subject A test, I still passed. She forces you to learn to write while making it fun. You'll learn a lot from her.
Wow. She keeps the literature lively. Haven't seen how she grades yet, but so far, good class.
She was the best T.A. I've ever had. Soooo funny. She also brings a greatly spirited discussion into the class. You won't regret taking her. Very interesting and really does a good job at introducing you to different ideas.
Karma is an excellent professor. She is fun funny hot and teaches better than all of my english professors so far at Davis . Can't ask for a better professor. Take her just look at her ratings off the charts.
TAKE HER!!! SHE IS FRIGGIN AWESOME.
Karma is sooo great! Definetly the best instructor I've had for the com series. Shes willing to help on anything, even other class essays! Her classes are lively and cutting edge. The assignments are fun, and the books she chose were great too. Absolutley loved her class!
I had her for English at the community college in Sacramento and if she offered 302 I would sign up in a second. She is wonderful teacher and I look forward to 3 hours of class at 8 in the mroning every Friday. If you can, take any and every class she teaches.
Helpful, funny, open minded teacher. Time flies in her class. You'll also learn a lot. Just wonderful in every way!
Excellent teacher; kept my interest the entire time and whenever I go to see her during office hours she never fails to satisfy!
Great Professor! She's funny and makes the class very interesting. You learn a lot of interesting facts from her. Like one of the other reviewers said, time flies when you're in her class.
What a refreshing humour! And she always keeps it interesting... I like her a lot!
Awesome teacher. Funny. Interesting. She actually knows what she is doing. I laughed and learned a lot in her class. If I had to take this class again, I would definitely take it with this teacher!!!
She's very helpful and tries to make the class fun
I didn't think this class was easy, but she's defintiely a good teacher. I would definitely recommend her. She actually really cares about her students.
She's a great teacher with a good sense of humor, though it isn't for everybody. You'll pretty much know what she's all about on the first day of class - if you don't like it, drop it. Her essay prompts are sometimes difficult, but her grading is fair as she allows students to experiment with style. Make sure to do the journal work on time.
I took her for Intro to Drama and it was the deciding factor into me deciding to remain an English major. She's funny, witty, articulate, clear in her descriptions, and a total Simpsons nerd (which is totally awesome). If you have a chance do yourself a favor and take a class-any class-from Karma.
Awesome sense of humor. Really helpful if you come to office hours. Really good teacher and I suggest you take a course with Karma. Class isn't the easiest one in the world, but its manageable.
Karma was an exceptional and motivating teacher. I had a lot of fun in her class. You have to work on your essays, and you must keep up with the reading to do well in the class. Overall, it was a great experience. She has a lot of energy and an amazing sense of humor.
Karma is a fun teacher! Recommended.
I had her for a freshman seminar on The Simpsons, very fun and interesting teacher.
Karma is amazing. I love her. She is hilarious and keeps everything interesting. Sh'es not very hard but stresses proofreading.. Only three essays, some quizes, and a take home final. Its and easy and interesting class. Karma rules. yeah!
I love her! She is one of those teachers with an amazing sense of humor! she's also very helpful when you go to her office hours. Class was tough, but if you do you're work, you'll do just fine. She'll kill you if you don't proofread. even though i hate english, i wouldnt mind taking another one of her classes!
Funny, real, and quizzes are fair. There is not that much writing. Extra credit is 6% and going to writing tutors and office hours will improve your writing. Friendly and understanding teacher. Not a hard A as long as you show effort.
Karma has got to be one of my favorite professors! She's friendly, but will bite you if you don't proof read. I enjoy going to her office hours because she will totally help you. 4 in-class essays and 4 outside. The book that I read for her class is life changing. I swear, I began looking at things differently. I recommend her.
Funny and outgoing professor. Down to earth attitude and wants you to put a lot of effort into your writing. Did not learn a huge amount of writing skills, but that takes some practice. Little bit unorganized but she appreciates constructive feedback. Allows a good amount of extra credit.
Soooooo funny! maybe the funnest person in the world. use bad words all the time, and bring really really cool and funny movie everyweek. finish class early, but learn so many things in class. as a international student, she made me love american culture.
Hilarious! She makes writing fun. If you don't like to read or write, take a class with Karma. You'll enjoy writing a little bit more at the end of the quarter.
Excellent teacher. Had her back in Winter 2007 to fulfill the Subject A requirement. I wasn't much of an English fan, but her jokes and teaching style definitely made this a fun class. Smiles a lot and is willing to help whenever you need help. Highly recommended if you're looking for someone to balance out those monotone professors.
I had her for a British Humor seminar so I can't really judge how she is for real classes, but as a person she is awesome! It's clearly a passion of hers and she's very easygoing and fun.
Hilarious and friendly. I learned a lot from her lectures. The readings, however, were underwhelming. With all the great graphic novels out there to choose from, I was a little disappointed. Most were autobiographical and not too exciting. Still, it was a really fun class.
Professor Karma is AWESOME! Everyday you learn something new, whether it's about the lessons or her personal life. You get graded on participation (talking in class about anything and being in class - sleeping in class does not count), essays, and one oral presentation. Also, you get to watch the Simpsons! This class will make you laugh!
Pretty tough class but feasible. She is awesome though.
This class and Doctor Waltonen helped me greatly improve my writing. Textbook was very helpful as well. Karma makes a lot of jokes and loves The Simpsons. Essay topics were applicable and thought-provoking. Goofy lady, but very knowledgeable and helpful. If you are good with grammar, she will love you.
There's a lot of work in this class. There will be classes where she will mostly just talk about herself - it can get kind of monotonous. She can come off as cocky, but she is always willing to help in office hours. Be prepared to work hard.
She has a great sense of humor and can even make those who HATE English, love English even a little at the end of the quarter. She is a huge "The Simpsons" fan, and she even uses some of the episodes into her teachings. Her essays get to be pretty tough sometimes as does her grading, but she is very welcoming in office hours. She is very nice!!!
Dr Karma is one of the better English teacher I've ever had. She is clear on what she wants and grades accordingly. She makes class interesting with creative lesson plans and essay topics. I would highly recomemmed her. She WILL make you a better writer.
By far the best professor in the English department. Taking this class with Karma will not only improve your writing but she's one of the coolest, down to earth people you'll ever encounter at this school. If she was like a decade younger i'd be very tempted to smash lol
Had her for a freshman seminar on The Simpsons. Ton of work to do out of class (especially for the script-writing project). We basically just watched Simpsons episodes in class. She's really down to earth. I just felt like she complained too much, and often used unprofessorly language.
She grades really hard, i know so many people who she didn't pass. I barely passed and i worked my butt off on essays, the highest grade i got was a B- on 1 paper, mostly i get C's,which i was happy to get b/c i lots of ppl get D's.Office hours very unhelpful, she rants on irelevant stuff in class for 2 hrs, she's kind of intimidating but interesting
If you have no interest in writing and/or have no sense of humor... might want to take someone else. She is BY FAR the best professor I have had at Davis. She is inspiring, hilarious, easy to talk to, and cares about her students! Please take her if you are up for a challenge because even though she is hard, she will change your life! Love her!!
tough grader and a lot of assigned readings and papers. She has unclear goals and expectations. Essay topics are not too interesting.
All of her expectations are outlined in the reader. The class has a heavy reading/writing load, but that's to be expected from a UWP class. Plus, she provides the reading ahead of time and they are almost always entertaining/useful. Professor Waltonen gave excellent instruction for both writing and life in general. Great class w/ a great professor!
Although this class is very challenging, Dr. Karma Waltonen is probably one of the best instructors on campus.Long story short: challenging, hard grader, extremely beneficial to your writing, encourages to consider different opinions, great sense of humor. I might not get an A in this class, but I do not regret this class at all.
I'm not going to lie, her class had a good amount of homework assigned, but each assignment was necessary to grow as a writer. She's a pretty hard grader too, but it's to help her students grow. Just a fair warning, TYPE OUT ALL YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. NO MATTER WHAT.
Hard grader! Some of her jokes and viewpoints are horrible! I regret taking her class. I would not recommend, especially for those students who do not speak or write English well. GPA killer.
Very rude and disrespectful to students. Came into office hours multiple times and left feeling stupid and ridiculed. I can't believe she hasn't been fired yet.
She is a hard grader, and she does give you a LOT of assignments out of class, but she is super helpful. She likes to put out jokes during class, and you don't HAVE to like em. She is one of those profs that are really cool and different. When it comes to hw, FOLLOW HER RULES! I would say if you are ESL people, her class really help you grow.
I just finished a Summer Semester of English 301 with Karma. SHE IS THE BEST!!! It's a college course, and it takes works. Wow, there's a shocker. However, she's not ridiculously difficult and she's extremely helpful. She is not rude. I find her sarcasm hilarious. Her laugh is amazing! She uses so much Pop Culture and I cannot say enough about her
Even though the class is 2 hrs, the time goes by fast b/c she keeps it interesting. She grades really hard; the highest was a B+, most people got C's. Take her if you want to become a better writer, don't expect to pass easily though. She gives a lot of HW, a few quizzes. Every Friday's we bring in snacks.
Don't freak out when you get bad grades in the first several essays. KEEP WORKING HARD, and DO NOT GIVE UP UNTIL THE END. Go to OFFICE HOURS. I got several D's and C- for my essays, but I still passed eventually. Do not avoid her due to the fact that she is a hard grader. I recommend her.
She is clear on what she wants you to do. Explains the assignments clearly. Picky about grammar. Lots of peer reviews.
Karma has the highest AWPE passing rate, but she will make you work for it. She requires an extra reader for her class in addition to the 2 textbooks. She is the hardest teacher among the workload teachers and she assigns a lot of work. If you must pass the AWPE ASAP, take her. If you know you can pass with minimal help then take someone else.
She's such a sweet, elegant lady who cares about her students as a mom cares about her children. She speaks softly, and I like that. She is like Marge Simpsons, not Mrs. Muntz.
Definitely difficult class, but I have improved A LOT! Homework before every lecture and several essays. I got several Ds and Cs at the beginning, and I am an ESL student, but I passed the class. Do not give up and keep working hard till the end. A good final paper will save your grade.
Dr. Karma is a solid choice if you need to pass WLD57. Class can be a little boring but she teaches you lots of helpful writing tips. Make sure to stay on top of homework and readings because she gives out pop quizes sometimes. You should be able to pass if you put in effort.
I took Writing in Health Sciences over summer session with an upper division psych class, and while this was challenging given all the readings and writing assignments, taking this course with Dr. Waltonen was an absolute pleasure. She gives great reading assignments and you can tell she does stand up comedy by the way she lectures. 10/10! :-)
Most horrible teacher I've taken in life. Very disrespectful to students and takes up the whole class period discussing how much better she is than other professors. Constantly boasts herself about being the best. Belittles students essays, calls them dumb for not saying exactly what she wants. Syllabus is very unorganized & course reader is trash
Karma is an amazing teacher! She cares a lot about her students. I was in her P section and she was there to help us with all our concerns. She gave assignments that help you in your writing. She assigns a course reader so you don't have to buy the expensive books which are a plus.
Amazing professor. She strikes a balance between humor and content in lecture. Her reading and homework assignments are instructive yet interesting. My writing improved dramatically in one quarter. Essays: a scientific article, a grant proposal, and a case study. The final was a personal statement. Must take. She provides everything to succeed!
She is a tough grader but most of us suck a writing so it's called for. I enjoy her class and I fell like I've already learned a lot of helpful tools. I wish she would use the canvas grade book as well as her personal grade book though.
Her Atwood Seminar was pretty easy. Show up to class, participate, and just follow the syllabus. She was really passionate about the subject and was always into what she was saying. Since the seminar had to be two hours, it felt like it dragged on a bit. Otherwise, this class was really enjoyable. Atwood is an amazing author.
I LOVE her. I am an ESL student, and I don't feel much confident about my English writing. Dr. Karma always supported me and gave me confidence about my writing. WLD57 is a p/np class, I got a B finally. Dr. Karma is an interesting person, and she loves The Simpsons sooooo much. Also, she will give you help during her office hours.
Dr. Waltonen has done the impossible... She has made me enjoy going to writing class! She is hilarious and light hearted. The assignments are super fair and manageable. Highly recommend.
Trust me you don't want to take her class. Struggling every day. LOTS of homewrok and readings. Have midterm and final (other professors usually don't). You won't know your grades of homework until the end. Much more essays than you will have in other classes.
I took Literary Study at Oxford University with Karma and it was a life-changing experience. Karma is hilarious and very knowledgeable. We had A LOT of reading to do, but essays were graded very fairly and lectures were centered around discussion. Karma is caring, easy'going, and so funny. I am taking her again!
Karma is a phenomenal professor and human. This is the 2nd class of hers I've taken. We had A LOT of assignments to do, mainly movie and book reviews. They are not difficult- they're actually fun- but there are a lot of them. Tests have EC questions on them. The works we read were diverse and enjoyable. Karma is hilarious! TAKE HER FOR ANYTHING!
Dr. Karma is funny in class, but I realized that she assigns a tremendous amount of work sometimes. She is the toughest grader Ive ever met and claims that she grades based on a rubric, but it seemed to me like this is false because people usually got Cs on their essays. Would not recommend because this professor causes unnecessary stress.
Dr. Karma is really funny and easy to talk to! I took her seminar on Margaret Atwood and walked away having learned (and read) more than I was expecting.
She is absolutely crazy about giving reading assignments. You can also expect quizzes on the readings every single class. Ridiculous! Her midterms and finals are stupid too because her instructions are super vague and she grades hard too even though she doesn't explain. Her jokes are also very terrible and disrespectful sometimes too. NOT HER.
By far the worst professor I've had, she honestly lives up to her name! She is very sarcastic and gave unnecessary work which gave me unnecessary stress! She is also a harsh grader!Be prepared for little pop quizzes, so makes sure you do the reading! SO MUCH WORK, and didn't really learn anything new that I wasn't taught in high school.
Dr. Karma's class is no joke, but if you put in the work, you're sure to come out of it a better writer. Go to her office hours and ask her for feedback on papers, do lots of editing, and make sure your grammar is on point. She aims to help you achieve better structure and more air-tight arguments on your essays, highly recommend.
Dr. Karma's class is organized and helps students become better writers (but only if you actually try). I will probably use her grammar and formatting cheat sheets for every paper I write for the rest of my life. You work hard but only because she wants to help you become a better writer. She is also hilarious and her stand up is awesome
I'm not going to lie, at first I thought I was going to hate her class since I am not the best writer. After a couple lectures I found that Dr. Karma is really down to earth and truly cares about her students. There are a lot of reading assignments but I promise they will help you become a better writer!! GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
I took Dr. Karma's seminar on Writing and Performing Stand-up Comedy. It might be scary if you have little public speaking experience, but it's a lot of fun sharing with the other classmates. It's not a class where she'll lecture you on how to be funny, you just perform and it gets critiqued. A fun time overall. Don't bother getting the book.
She is a great stand up comedian, and a solid writer. Even though she gives quite a lot of work, they really do help you improve and learn to write better.
just avoid, try to get someone else.
She's got a great sense of humor and a friendly personality. The fact that I had to teach myself everything in her class was pretty annoying though. Other than that it was a fun small class.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Grades incredibly hard, has a innocuous grading reference sheet that is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. She does not care about content, only if you followed her rules which are beyond stupid. DO NOT take this class with her, drop right away or you will have a quarter of listening to her idiotic jokes.
Her syllabus is so convoluted and unclear she'd benefit from her own lectures on writing for clarity. The assigned literature is uninspired and the class hardly features literature from social justice icons. Take this class if you think quoting MLK out of context means you have an understanding of how to articulate complex social justice issues.
Yes, she's a hilarious teacher. But the amount of work she gives is cruel. The quarter system is made up of ten weeks and she uses the entirety of that time to pound grammar points, anecdotes of her life, and readings into you. Dr. Waltonen rarely goes over the material for the essay. Good luck with trying to get a good grade.
Karma is a wonderful soul, shes funny and cares deeply about her work and students. However, she gives an obscene amount of busy work to be completed by the next class meeting that typically isnt that useful. You will mostly likely have to teach yourself most of the material. However, the material provided truly helped improve my writing.
Karma is the hardest writing prof youll have at UCD, but you will never learn more about writing from anyone else. I will hold on to the notes and handouts from this class for years. Her grading is no joke and the workload is rigorous. But if you can keep up and meet her expectations, you will come out of this class an incredible writer.
Karma is an excellent professor. She isn't easy by any means so be prepared to really work for your grade. The things you learn in this class, however, are worth it.
This was the hardest UC Davis class I have ever taken. Before this class, I really enjoyed writing and got great grades in other essays. This professor expects everything to be done HER way and won't settle for anything you've learned previously. If you think you're remotely a good writer, do NOT take this class. It will tear down your self-esteem.
Don't take her class for the sake of your mental health!!!!!!
Assigns way too much busy work and does not seem to follow her own rubric. You have to read a bunch of disorganized pdfs before each class and take pretty difficult quizzes about them. Would not recommend this professor if you have a busy schedule. She takes too much pride in grading each homework assignment with extreme scrutiny.
Gave the most amount of hw out of any professor I've ever had at UCD. Idk if it was just because it was online, but the amount of busywork was insane. Ex: for discussions she'd have you post three separate times and comment on six people's. 1 day of homework could look like two quizzes & an assignment with twenty questions & a discussion like that
Worst professor I have ever had in my college life. I got straight As in my previous writing class but for this class, I need to worry about if I can pass. She only indulges in her own world. As long as u have a little disagreement, she will DESTROY YOU ESTEEM!
Dr. Karma is obviously great at what she does, and gives good feedback on writing assignments. However, the workload is really insane. This class takes up sooo much time it's crazy. If you're busy and just want the units, avoid. If you really want to better your writing, however, and don't care about the workload, she will teach you a lot.
Wouldn't recommend her. Due on one day could be reading 5-7 pieces of work, filling out questions that can be up to 20 parts, and multiple quizzes. We have work due every MWF. She's an obviously very talented and passionate writer but she demands too much time from students. Barely have time for my major classes. Many ugly cries from this class.
Don't ever take her if writing gives you pleasure. Karma is a very knowledgeable person, but she is such a terrible teacher. She expects so much from you but doesn't properly spend time teaching anything. It's normally given through hundreds of disorganized readings that you won't have time for. Her feedback will be complicated and condescending.
I have never had a teacher who cares more about my well-being and success than Dr. Karma. She is tough and expects a lot, but that's because she herself is an incredibly hard worker through thick and thin. Do not take this class if you're not willing to buckle up and put in the effort. She gives SO MUCH to her students -- feedback, guidance, care.
Suffering from PTSD because of Karma.
It's kind of tough, but as they say, "no pain, no gain."
She is an editor for a living so she's a tough grader, but her comments are very helpful. I'm an NPB major and this is the first class that I actually learned something in. She has a lot of homework but the assignments are meant to help you with your essays. If you do the work, expect success on your medical school personal statements.
Heavy loads of homework/assignments for a second-six-week course. Expect long assigned readings daily on top of reading all the uploaded class material, as lectures are not recorded. To this add several quizzes that barely give you the time to answer and a lot of discussions. If you take this class be prepared to teach yourself or to even pass.
The stand up comedy class was great! Stand up is not something to scoff at, and is very difficult for some people but she was very helpful and the atmosphere was very lax. Participation was paramount in the class, and everyone is supposed to participate every day, so if thats not for you I would avoid it!
Dr. Karma gives you everything you need to succed in the course, but you will need to work for it! There is a lot of readings and mid work week to do, but she goes over them in class + they are pretty interesting. 1 article analysis, 1 scientific essay, 1 case study, and abstracts for the final. Take her class if you want to be a better writer!
While she is definitely competent, she assigns a copious amount of work and treats this class as if it were a 7 unit class. Be prepared to read about 100 pages per week. She has very strict instructions for each paper and her expectations are never-ending.
I read all these reviews, and I was like psshhh I can handle some work. But no, this isn't just some work. I was only in this class for a week before I decided to drop it because I literally could not make time for other major classes. Just don't take this professor unless you're literally taking the easiest classes on earth.
3 essays of varying length. A LOT of Readings/homework/reading quizzes. Final is easy multiple choice canvas exam and abstracts. This class was harder and had more work than OCHEM, GEN CHEM, Upper and lower Division bio classes. Be very careful and do not take with other hard courses. By far the most workload and Hardest class I have taken at UCD.
Even though I just took her for a first year seminar, I could tell that she would be an amazing professor to have for an actual writing class. She is super sweet and you can tell that she cares about her students. If I ever need to take an English course I would definitely try to get her as my professor.
Dr. Karma's UWP class is difficult not so much because the content is hard but because it requires a huge time commitment in order to succeed. Luckily this was my most difficult class I had this quarter so I was able to devote a good amount of time to it but I can't imagine taking this course past semesters when I had much more on my plate.
DO NOT EVER TAKE HER. I spend 8+ hours on an essay just for her to give me a C-. I AM A GOOD STUDENT AND SHE MAKES ME FEEL LIKE THE DUMBEST PERSON EVER. PLEASE STEER CLEAR I WARN YOU
Dr. Karma Waltonen is a very passionate professor. This class is A LOT of work, but it's explained in the syllabus before class begins (so it shouldn't be a surprise). She grades pretty harsh but only because she wishes the best for her students. You definitely learn a lot in this class!
The workload is insaneeeeeeeee and she grades very harsh. There were a lot of small quizzes each week worth only 1-2 point but can destroy your grade. RUN
RUN!!!!!!!!
This should count as a 17-unit class. There is a TON of reading and a ton of work for one-point assignments. I remember doing a grammar worksheet that had twenty plus tedious questions, and it was only worth one point. If you have a heavy workload with other classes and a limited amount of time to read tons of papers, DO NOT TAKE!
AVOID THIS CLASS. Dr. Waltonen is a knowledgeable but terrible teacher. She expects you to know exactly how to write papers how SHE likes them. She's hard to approach to ask for help and demeaning in the way she gives feedback. Her class made me hate writing. She is extremely scrutinous when it comes to grading and makes you doubt yourself a lot.
Heavy grader with the most random timing for quizzes that won't let you have enough time to answer.
Probably the worst prof I've had. A lot of assignments graded very harshly, and she swears all the time, and just tells useless stories during class and expects all of us to laugh. She once came to class with no shoes on.
There is so much writing and editing. It's like six essays over seven weeks. The grader is very picky and has so many rules. It's horrible to take this class with any STEM course. There are quizzes twice a week and homework and in-class assignments. You learn a lot but honestly its not worth it wait there are easier prof.
Professor Karma's class is a lot of work, but you'll learn a ton. The assignments are challenging, but using tools like unstuck study can really help with study prep. Be ready to put in the time, and you'll come out a stronger writer.
She's a very passionate professor! Yes, she has a lot of work because it's a writing class, but she's also very understanding and has lots of opportunities for extra credit! She never turns down a student for an extension if they need it. I feel like my writing has improved significantly because of how detailed her assignments are.
I absolutely loved this class mainly because of the guidance given during discussion, it was a small seminar class which was heavily reliant on completing the readings. I took this as a fun class and was not disappointed, Prof. Karma was entertaining and made me think really hard about the texts. Highly recommend!
Dr. Karma is a great professor and will be missed. While her class is difficult, she explains concepts very clearly and her course is very well organized! If you put in the work (like you should with any class), you can definitely get an A.
thinks the best way for students to learn is by throwing WALLS of text at them instead of practical, hands-on activities? workload is crazy. i mean CRAZY. more than my UPPER DIV biochem, cs, and physics COMBINED. (can prove with math.) don't think you're different!! has insane attitude as if everyones an idiot and shes never made a mistake b4
I was nervous about the amount of writing in a short study abroad class, but she was clear with expectations and prepared us well. I have essay anxiety but I gained confidence & had less anxiety than usual. Karma is so knowledgeable & funny! If you participate in the discussions and go deeper into explaining & backing up your ideas you'll do well!
Dr. Waltonen is a good writing teacher, but the class is significantly more work than a 4 unit class. The essays are reasonable but the amount of reading/busy work is immense. I also don't believe we did writing that is related to the health sciences. We wrote on a health topic, but not in a style that would be used in the health sciences at all.
Dr. Karma is very transparent with you from the beginning-- this is a difficult class, but she offers a flat 5% (and more) of extra credit. She's hilarious, passionate, and an amazing professor. She loves her job and you can definitely tell. Definitely take this class if you want to learn how to become a better writer! I loved her and the course.
If you already have a heavy workload, be cautious about falling behind! Much of the class consists of smaller assignments that require time to understand before completion, along with time needed to read and comprehend, if necessary. Emphasizes this class is challenging, suggests staying two weeks ahead of schedule.
Dr. Karma's UWP class is time-consuming. If you are like me, an overwhelmed STEM major, this class is A LOT. I am a slow reader, taking the extra time to do well on quizzes and homework. However, that effort paid off. I learned to love the class and admired Dr. Karma's hard work, and she is an inspirationally tough person.
Took this class as a break from all my STEM classes and really loved it. Dr. Waltonen is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about teaching this course, and this combined with the setup of a first year seminar made it very engaging. This is probably my favorite course that I've taken yet, and she is easily my favorite instructor that I've had.
This class is informative and challenging. You'll improve your writing skills and develop a firmer grasp of sentence structure. She is also a comedian, making class fun while keeping students updated on the world. Before this class, I thought great writing was complex, but now I know clarity is key. This course will truly transform your writing!
FRS2 with Dr. Karma was so fun and engaging. It is a 2 unit course on Margaret Atwood's works for a grade, so be prepared to read and do a little project or essay.
She is the least understanding professor I have ever had at UC Davis. Workload for this class is way more than a 4 units. Please do not take this class with any hard sciences or workload heavy classes. Honestly harder than ochem, gen chem, or even physics
Lots of homework through out the week, readings were easy the first week but after that it was just Walls of texts. Hard grader, hates AI. Lots of dos and dont's, very overwhelming.
Dr. Karma Woltonen is an amazing professor. She will take you through grammar, working on concise writing, and sources. She grades appropriately, works to help, and is extremely understanding. The reading was an expected amount, but not crazy.
She gave too much busy homework. I spent more time for this class than any other. She is a teacher with white privledge and you can tell. Tough grader and unfair. Boring lecture. If you can avoid her don't take her.
Professor Waltonen is very passionate about Margaret Atwood, and knows quite a lot about her. I would not take this if you aren't prepared to read A LOT- 200 pages every week plus short stories/poems. If you like to read, and are willing to discuss it, you'll enjoy the class. It's not worth taking if you don't plan on keeping up with the reading.
Very work heavy, she expects you to read so much outside of class and her homework quizzes are brutal if you even miss one question. However, the value of the content she teaches and her passion is undeniable. Extra brownie points for being one of the only professors I've taken so far that actively tries to guide students on thriving in this field.
this is the most accurate review about her she has so many papers about grammar she is very heavy on it lots of homework and it does not even help your grade at all she talks very unprofessional, yes I did pass only because of the extra credit but please don't take her unless you really have too. she is heavy on everything and expects too much
Dr. Karma is very knowledgeable and passionate about UWP 104F. If you put in the effort and follow the instructions, you will get a good grade. There are many interesting readings that are applicable to the health professions!
good to stay on top of the readings every week, they will ALL be discussed. She was okay, her grading was weird with the final essay, but you'll do fine if you take her feedback. participation is SO important, she notices who is/isn't participating. Very obsessed with Atwood, like you wouldn't believe.
