The worst teacher at Furman
No Comments
Tough!
Don't take this. The man's speaking english is tough enough, don't even think about dealing with his grading.
This man is the shattiest English teacher ever. It would be nice if he could actually speak the freakin' language.
I agree with all the other ratings, this man is the worst teacher I've ever had. I couldn't believe it when I found out he didn't get fired. He is an **** too on top of everything else.
the material in this class is sometimes difficult because it is so different from the usual. but the teacher makes it interesting.
don't take!
Needs to learn English before he can't teach it. Bad professor.
grades unfairly, mean, teaches wrong material, orange orange orange. . .need I say more?
disagree with others, great teacher
challenging, but very interesting course, great teacher
Horrible teacher, there were only 5 people in my class and we all were expected to be there everyday, no days off or anything. Long, boring, assignments that are unfairly graded.
cool accent, interesting teacher
My 10 page paper was worth the same amount of points as my 2 paragraph homework assignment. I don't think he actually read any of my papers. This class is not hard, but very frustrating. In the end, you'll wind up getting a better grade than you thought.
he will make you hate english! dont' take his class.

good teacher, always chanlenging us to think and always willing to give his time
Key to this class: you only get back what you put into it, participate in class, engage yourself and ask questions--this will ensure a good grade
Easy class.. you'll end up with a better grade than you thought. helpful... i actually came out of it knowing something.
Horrible teacher. Very unorganized, never returns work. Never makes his assignments clear, and waits until the last minute to assign paper topics. Dont take the class unless you love summarizing books!
Extremely unorganized, you never know what the assignment is or when it will be due. Assumes that his class is your ONLY priority. You don't know what is expected of you, and will be confused and frustrated for the ENTIRE SEMESTER.
run, run as FAR AWAY from him as you can!
Worst teacher by far at Furman, please no one ever take this class
The people who disagree or do not like him, clearly didnt get good grades or didnt do the work or didnt participate in class. Ignore them. Participate and you'll do well.
I made a good grade and was the only person who participated in class, but it was STILL TERRIBLE. Trust me, this class will make you go out of your mind. You never know whats expected; he will change paper topic HOURS before its due! IT SHOWS HE'S TENURED

This is a horrible professor - he tells you to be clear, then says to be clear by focusing on clarity, then says to do that by being more clear...a demon who cannot teach...avoid at all costs...if he were to take the time to gt a Bachelors in Education along with his six other degrees, he'd be fine
He is not that terrible.
He takes all the modivation for doing well out of the class. I've worked all week on a paper and got a B, then worked on it the day it was due for a B+. He wants to have you open your mind just enough for you to agree with him, but not him with you. A good class if you want a B, but bad for an A.
The whole course can be summarized by "awkward silence". Bhati really knows his stuff, he just has a hard time communicating with students. Contrary to popular belief, he really does care (enough that he will all but write your papers if you ask). Don't ever disagree and you'll be fine in his class.
If you really think hard you will do well in the class. Those of us who were open to something new liked the class alot. He brings something new to Furman and will work with you to help you get a better grade.
He is quite possibly one of the most amazing profs. at furman. For the people who thought he was "evil" or trying to "convert" them--they simply belong at BOB JONES-a bunch of fools who dont know why they came to college or who arent after getting a good mind expanding well rounded education.
Sorry, but the man's just not very good. Tough to understand and extremely scattered.
yeah, lots of awkward silence. seems to only ask for your opinion so he can argue with it and try to change your mind. very annoying. but he does seem eager to help you one-on-one... if you can stand it.
I was the only person who participated in class and was the only one who made an A, but the class MADE MY LIFE HELL. He is confusing, will tell you that you dont know anything, and changes paper topics constantly. He may know his stuff, but hes so confusing and scattered that its NOT WORTH IT.RUN!
He's a good teacher, in spite of what others say.
He didn't give us a syllabus until midterm, throws assignments at you at the last minute... one time, we had three three hour movies in one week, and he didn't tell us about them unti Tuesday. When he gives long assignments, he says, "you don't have anything else to do." UGH!
Dr. Bhati has amazing hair that I only WISH I could have. His classes were awkward, but he's not a bad guy at all. Listen to what he says in one on one meetings and he'll write your paper for you. He's absolutely survivable, and if you agree with him, you'll be fine. He's awkward, but kind.
Sure, this class is survivable and you might even be able to do well in it. That doesnt mean you should jump on board, because I guarantee you he will make your life miserable with last minute assignments. He changed one assignment (to be LONGER and a different topic) 4 hours before the paper was due. He's SO UNORGANIZED- RUN!
I'm not even an English major, and I decided to take Dr. Bhati's Eng 12 class after having him for Eng 11 because I enjoyed his class so much. Taking his classes was one of the best decisions I made because I learned so much and he put so much time towards helping me.
If you put forth some effort, this class is MORE THAN survivable--its an incredible learning experience!! Never have i seen a professor be willing to help his/her students as much as Dr. Bhati--he even helped me organize my thoughts for a paper on a saturday afternoon. clearly, FEW professors are as willing to help their students excel and get a
Looking back now, I dont think i learned more in any other class than i did in this class. it has really opened up my eyes to the world around me. yes it was hard at times but i came through it and now realize what a valuable experience it was. i highly recommend this south asian class!
two words: awesome accent! Also an incredible learning experience. VERY helpful outside of class indeed.
Bhati might be helpful- but he only wants to open your mind to HIS point of view. He also expects you to put his class over every other class/extracurricular activities you have EVERY DAY. He's unorganized, unclear, scattered, and will even talk about the WRONG BOOK sometimes. Seriously, this class is manageable but it will DRIVE YOU CRAZY.
Quite possibly one of the BEST professors at furman! He brings something different to our campus. I had no idea what I was getting into taking Bhati's class but I think he may have convinced me to become an English major!
For a totally different experience that will help you see the world OUTSIDE the bubble, i highly recommend Dr. Bhati. go ahead and take a step outside! I learned more from his class than any others thus far taken at Furman! He is extremely helpful outside of class.

Bhati is the worst professor I've ever had at Furman by far. He is terribly unorganized, cannot plan more than two days in advance, and his lectures are made up on the spot and hard to understand. I made an A, but he was the most FRUSTRATING teacher I've ever had. I don't know why he ever got tenured. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Without question, Bhati is the worst professor I have ever had. He is terribly arrogant, and we would spend 50 minutes talking about two sentences in one paragraph. He loves to assign last-minute, weekend papers due at 8:00 on a Sat. night. I felt like Furman cheated me by allowing this guy to teach...
this man is PURE genius!! Dont listen to anyone who says otherwise. For those who feel that they didnt get their "moneys worth," take your money ELSE WHERE!! I took his 11 and A65 class and learned more about South Asian culture and history than ANY other South Asian class that I took. His desire to help you outside the class is unbeatable.
I loved this professor. He was increadibly inspiring. I managed an A and was NOT frustrated. Rather, I found him really helpful.
I have no idea what these people are talking about-I have NEVER met anyone with a good thing to say about him, and I've talked to a lot of people because he is THAT terrible. Assignments are regularly changed/added last minute, due on saturdays and sundays. No one participated in class, he's terribly organized and a bad lecturer. RUN!

I think some people are lying and I just had to get on here to back Dr. Bhati up. I do not EVER remember assignments being "changed" at the last minute and being assigned on saturday night. If anything, he's known to extend deadlines--which many other profs wont even think about! If anything RUN TOWARDS his class!
I wanted to take this class because of the books we were reading, but I completely ended up hating it. Dr. Bhati is one of the nicest teachers here at Furman but his class drove me crazy. I never knew what we were talking about or what we were doing and why. I would rather retake Math 12 than this again and I hate math.
Seriously, I can't even imagine not liking him because of his race, so that's completely obsurd..however, he's just really that bad of a teacher. His assignments are unclear and clearly, no one runs to his classes because they ARE that bad and it's the worst class I've ever taken, at Furman or otherwise. My advisor even told me not to take it.
I looked forward to going to his class everyday because of the discussions. He really makes you think and his personality is very unique. Its a shame if your advisor is saying not to take his class--maybe its because of faculty politics. I think we all have a lot to learn from this man. Take his class!!

WHAT A F***ING AWESOME PROF!! I can't believe how some crazy f*** would not like such a DEDICATED, smart, helpful professor such as Dr. Bhati. Only someone who doesnt deserve a good education. Oh ps, Dr. Bhati isn't even teaching an ENG 11 this term--try again and dont make up stuff.
YES! Take this class!! You will not regret it! I've loving every moment of it. And i dont think i've learned more about a culture from a single class in a long time! He may seem a bit tough but its all worth it.
I took english 11, WINTER TERM, no one is making up stuff, and it was so miserable. I didn't learn anything about other cultures and furthermore, he is just a terrible professor. he's unclear and gives you the meanest comments no matter how hard you try. Listen, I made a good grade in the class, but it so wasn't worth it. Stay away...
It seems that the last person has already written against Dr. Bhati a million times before and perhaps his or her faculty advisor is prompting him or her to do so. It's such a shame that this site is used like this--maybe it should be www.iama****.com. I loved Bhati's class and I can deeply appreciate how helpful he was.
Who is this moron writing such obnoxious things about such a decent human being and brilliant professor? I didnt make an A in Bhati's class but I can honestly say he put a LOT of time in and helped me out a LOT--no one can argue that he isn't helpful--NO ONE. Plus he's very interesting to talk to and super smart!
Such a nice man! I loved talking to him, and he is more than willing to help with your papers if you need him. However, he's really frazzled and unorganized. Unclear on when things are due and returns papers back to you like 4 weeks after you turn them in. Interesting class though.
I like to casually refer to him as satan. The worst professor I have had. Horribly disorganized, and likes to give last-minute assignments. He tries to be helpful but isn't because he is so unclear and off in his own world. He nice, not that hard of a grader, and he did extend a paper deadline once. But still I would never take him again.
I commonly refer to him as "the genius," because he's quite possibly one of the most enlightened minds at Furman. He has really helped me to grow as a writer and challenged me to think outside the box. There are no "last minute assignments," just exercises to help us and don't bare much on the grades--you want to learn something? Take him!
Not a fun class. Very unorganized, didn't understand any of his grading. Avoid
Ok to start with, the man's super smart. He's also really helpful. It's not super easy, but it's not super hard. Participation is key. He's got a cool accent and he's HI-LARIOUS if you catch some of his comments! A must take.
I took this class with Bhati last spring and I dont regret it. He's really flexible with paper topics at times and is more than willing to help you. Most of all i liked the classroom discussions. Plus he's just a cool guy!
He is an awful man. He may be a genius, but one with his own opinions and an unwilligness to allow an argument. He is condescending, telling you how little life experience you have, and correcting every word from your mouth. He abuses blackboard by giving you hw on days that you dont have class. really interesting class though if you can stand him.
Pleasurable outside of class, but refuses to let you argue your point of view. constantly interrupts and rarely understands correctly the point his students are trying to make because he is an awful listener. tons and tons of work.
Bhati is a nice guy. He tries to be helpful. He will not get any point you try to make. If you take him when you do the mandantory class discussions about something write down what he says and write about that. It is the only way to get a decent grade. Dont be original. Dont be creative. Be boring like the class. I wouldnt reccomend this to anyone
He is flexible on paper due dates and is very understanding. He is very intelligent, but sometimes makes the class feel stupid (and maybe we are). But he is very helpful if you seek his help. I think whether you like the class or not depends on how much effort you put into the class. He is a very fair grader. Overall, I liked him.
This man is beyond words the most helpful professor I've had at furman--if you choose to seek help. After taking the class i feel smarter and feel I have greater global awareness. He is super brilliant. Can seem tough--but its more than doable.
The topic of the class was interesting but almost too narrow at times. The class is very discussion based which is sometimes aggravating if you don't understand what the teacher is talking about. There are a lot of writing assignments but the Bhati is very helpful if you use him as a resource. He is a very intelligent and helpful outside of class.
One of those professors who is too smart for GER classes so he has a tough time relating to students who arent english majors. You feel like you are lost in class the whole time but somehow still make good grades if you do the work. Not my favorite, but from what I hear about other english profs he might be safer to take since hes an easy grader.
Very unorganized, expects certain things to be done without communicating so. Not a tough grader, but assigns ridiculous amounts of reading. When voiced, expectations not realistic. Students end up teaching more of the class than he does
Very unorganized, huge amounts of reading. Very unclear on what the assigments are. Way too smart for me to even talk to him on the same level
Very helpful intelligent professor. Assigns a lot of reading but well worth the time. Can be confusing about expectations but desires students to asks questions
He is an interesting man, to be sure. However, he is not clear about expectations and ends up screwing the class over.
Do not take any of his classes. You'll be bored to tears as you listen to him ramble on about stuff that doesn't really have anything to do with your work.
Too much reading, not at all clear about expectations
Bhati's really sweet and nice, but class discussions are often at a much more metaphysical level than one might expect. Really laid back. Will work with you if you have issues. Flip side: unclear on expectations sometimes. Type As will hate. Type Bs will love (as I do) :)
He is rude, annoying, boring and confusing. I made a decent grade in his class but he expected SO much for and FWS. The worst thing of all were the books used in this course. SO BORING. He really is a smart man but a TERRIBLE teacher. I hated that class and cried about it a few times; also considered dropping it. Please don't take him. Please.
Extremely unclear with requirements for essays and other assignments in general. VERY frustrating class. Try to avoid taking a class from him, y ou'll save yourself a lot of stress.
I enjoyed his class and actually took another the next year. He's interesting and engaging, as long as you're willing to put in the time. Anyone who thinks he's boring must be incredibly boring themselves.
NOOOOO! Painful class. Worst I've ever had.
Absolutely HORRIBLE! class is a joke! He assigns 3 "journals" which are 10-12 pgs long and we were supposed to have a term paper but never got to it because he's so scatterbrained and doesn't stick to dates. He tells you to read like 5 poems and gets to maybe 2 of them because he goes off on so many tangents! Avoid like the plague!!!!
He is very smart but it is almost like he knows so much about the subject that he can't condense it to teach this class. We wrote four papers and for each of them he didn't give us an outline - just said go with it. He is willing to spend extra time with you but it doesn't really help. I would not recommend this class.
Very nice man, but terrible FYS professor. Interesting topic, but the material/themes were very repetitive and I lost interest early on in the semester. Is not specific and is very unorganized.
He's a nice man, but so disorganized, unclear, and sometimes very rude to students looking for help (though he does give extensions if you ask him privately). I learned little about what Furman looks for in writing, and the texts we read were repetitive. My small class of 10 all lost interest quickly.
This is the most stupid class u can ever take at Furman! He is so disorganized and does not even return your grades for u to know how u doing in he class. He always came to class late and always interrupts when u talking. This class is not worth you time! Look somewhere else! Simple!
Dr. Bhati is a nice guy but his classes are ridiculous. He's extremely unorganized and punishes the class for it. A teacher being unorganized, doesn't bother me. But it does bother me, when I am given 10 page paper 1 week before its due (because he realize he needed more grades, at the last minute.) I wouldn't recommend this class.
The problem I had with Dr. Bhati wasn't that he was a difficult grader or that the material was hard- it's that I had NO IDEA what was going on during the class. No expectations were given out and assignments were given at random. If you want to spend a semester freaking out over random papers assigned, then take the class...
Dr. Bhati is a friendly and interesting professor, but he does tend to be unorganized and interrupt his students. It is past mid-term and we still have no grades in the system, so we have no idea what kind of grade we will have when the end of term comes. His instructions are often unclear and confusing.
He's a nice man, but his teaching was not very informative. He talks for large portions of the "discussion" periods and then can be frustrated that people aren't speaking up. Show up, be respectful, participate occasionally, and you'll be fine.
Dr. Bhati is such a sweet person, but his teaching is a little lax. He takes a while to hand papers back and is unclear about grades. When he does grade, he gives good feedback.
He is a nice, smart man, who is passionate about what he is teaching, and that is about where it ends. We were given almost no room to speak ourselves, given that he spends most of the time rambling about unrelated topics. Assignments are unclear, he is unable to be concise with his own material, to the point where no one is sure what is going on.
Dr. Bhati is a nice guy really and very friendly. I had him for my freshman writing seminar Veils and Turbans and had him during my senior year again just this ended Fall semester of 2016 for English Literature and Reality. He understands if you cant meet a deadline for an assignment because you have a lot of your plate
Professor Bhati is one of the worst professors I've had at Furman. His class doesn't have a syllabus and he is incredibly unorganized. We would usually read 50-60 pages for homework about mediocre books only to show up to class and be incredibly bored. He makes awful jokes too. However, he is a genuinely good guy with good intentions.
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. We had a French girl in our class who he called "dumb" because he could not understand her. He had no syllabus and would not give us structure when we asked. I am being serious DO NOT take this class. Worst professor at Furman and worst teacher I have ever had. Pure idiot
First day of class he didnt have a syllabus ready... that should pretty much tell you all you need to know. So far we have written 3 essays but only one was for a grade and that was for our midterm (all were supposedly for a grade). Tries to facilitate class discussions but ends up going on his own tangents. Very dry 10/10 would not recommend .
I don't even know where to start or what to say except don't take this class. For an FYW it was very disorganized and we would just listen to him go on these off-topic tangents each day. Some days would have no work and then randomly a ton of reading. Slow, relatively easy grader but gives no direction and useless comments
I took this class for a GRE credit (big mistake). One of the most abstract and confusing classes I've ever taken. Extremely disorganized and spends the majority of lectures going off on tangents. Didn't receive a syllabus until over a month into the course. Do yourself a favor and do not take Bhati, even for the TA credit.
Dr. Bhati's class was fun, mainly since the small FYW environment made it fun. Other than that, the books we read were definitely interesting. But, his lectures were not very clear and he would get sidetracked easily. Other than that, he was a nice guy who at the end of the day just wants you to learn.
Gets off track a lot, so get ready to fall behind in class. It's primarily him talking so needs to listen more. He is very accessible outside of class, but definitely wouldn't take him again. Meetings are usually confusing because he is all over the place so you would need to pay extra attention to try and conclude what he is trying to say.
