Amazing prof, makes it funny and interesting. Be very careful with APA style for your term paper. On the midterms for the definitions: define, why important and relate to other terms and you'll do OK. For the essay part make sure to read and answer ALL parts of the question! Textbook not really needed as his notes are in depth.

Lectures are well planned out and he has fill-in-the-blank style notes so make sure to grab them from someone if you miss a class. Two midterms that are pretty easy so long as you read the textbook as well as his notes as he takes about 5050 from each. Unexpected sense of humour and he's capable of explaining concepts well with good examples.

He has fill in the blank notes, which are absolutely awful and make no sense. Read the text, as he tests about 60% out of the text, and stuff will make more sense than the notes. If you're looking for a science elective, this is the one. Class is easy, concepts are pretty basic and it's just memorization. He seems like a nice guy but lectures were boring and dull (never really went to class - textbook is the same as his lectures). Project is a grade booster. Final exam is cumulative tho. Eh prof and easy class overall.

Not ripping on the guy but honestly kind of overrated. Has some dad jokes and reads off his slides. Doesn't really inspire anyone to pursue psychology, doesn't make the class that interesting. It's 104 so the tests aren't hard. Lectures are really boring and you just sit there waiting for fill in the blanks while on your phone. Not bad not good.

Entertaining professor in a relatively straightforward class. It doesn't take too long to study for tests, just stick to his notes. However, his tests can be very tricky, testing on the smallest details, so watch out for that. Easy self-management project (should be an easy 15%). Can be a bit coarse with students who ask questions though...

5% participation mark; guaranteed if you come to class. 'Self-managment' project worth 15% can be a booster as well. Marking can be over-critical as you can lose over 10% on a project component for imperfect APA citations. All that is countered by very difficult exams. Avg for final was 69%. loepelmann was a real G but his tests were tough after the first midterm. he's genuinely a funny guy and really tries to get the point across. but his testing was WAY too specific and the final is 120 questions in 120 minutes, cumulative with 23 chapters and closed book, like how is that reasonable??? other than that i like him but not his testing!

Exams are very tough, with a heavy focus on theory-based questions, and the online lab assignments are marked very strictly, with the TA's feedback very confusing.

He is great. You just need to actually study because it is not the easiest class to begin with. But after the first midterm, I understood how to prepare for the exam. Plus the grading scale is really fair and helps you to get a good grade even if the test is hard.

Loepelmann was a very entertaining, you can tell he enjoys the content. You do have to show up as notes are fill in the blanks. Exams are rather difficult as he's pretty specific with questions but the grade boundaries are low Epolls and labs are also great for a slight grade boost! The textbook is needed but comes with questions, good for studying

Don't be fooled by the low grade boundaries, this isn't an easy class. Not a fan of the fill in the blank notes, I felt like I mindlessly filled them in without understanding anything. The tests are hard/tricky, they include both textbook and lecture content. My lowest grade of the year :(

great lectures, very engaging prof. due to the volume of material, you have to put in more studying than your average psych course, but the material is interesting and the difficulty is reflected in the lenient grade boundaries. but it was quite frustrating that the exams were 50/50 textbook and lecture because the material did not overlap much.

Honestly, when I would drive to the UOA for his morning class I would drive without my seatbelt because I think getting to an accident would've been better than attending. Do not take this prof, as you will also be driving without your seatbelt.

I was nervous taking 258 cuz of the reviews but Karsten is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be! 258 is a HARD class, no matter the prof. At least he dropped the scale. Tests are hard + he does test on very niche topics. 258should be taken with a lighter load/easy electives. Dont let the reviews scare you away from this prof in particular.

ePolls (5%), 6 labs (15%), 2 midterms (25% each), cumulative final (30%). Attendance not mandatory since people shared notes in discord, which made fill in the blanks unnecessary to do in the first place. TAs took eons to grade labs & feedback was inconsistent. Content itself is easy to grasp, just way too much. Ok prof but poor style of teaching.

This is the best class I have taken at U of A. Lectures were interactive and content was super interesting. Loepelmann puts so much effort into his lectures and that was incredibly appreciated. If you engage with the lectures you will do well.

I loved Loepelmann's class. It was very informative, and I found that I learned a lot. Yes, His exams are a little tough, but if you study and read the textbook, then they should be easy. He is a great lecturer and I found that his in-class examples helped me a lot with the tests.

I have never hated a class as much as I did this one. He just rambles on for 80 minutes twice a week with virtually no point being made, and absolutely no ties to psychology whatsoever. If you're looking for your 400-level science psych course, PLEASE look elsewhere. He can be funny sometimes though, and usually responds quickly.

Requires attendance (participation marks and fill in the blank notes). If you miss a class you are screwed cuz he will not give you notes. Hated the Bmod project...it was useless and I learned nothing. Tries to be quirky and funny which started off fine but was so off putting near the end. Hated his exams, hard for no reason.

The most overwhelming class I have ever taken. Exams are exceptionally content heavy and they are cumulative, meaning by the final you have over 500 terms you need to have memorized (trust, I made Q-cards). The B-Mod assignment is only worth 15% but takes a lot of work and dedication but the Prof is really nice and responds quickly.

Very overwhelming class. For the exams, they are cumulative which is fine for the midterms but the final will fill you with a sense of hopelessness and make you think, "Honestly I'll take a pass at this point." because you simply cannot remember 700+ different terms.

Exams are very poorly designed, and expected an understanding of content much beyond a typical 200 level course. The final exam requires a complete mastery of the lectures, the class notes, a 400-page textbook, and additional readings. Furthermore, the textbook content and the in-class lectures are not even consistent with each other.

Expectations set WAY too high for all courses he teaches. Having to know hundreds of terms from both textbook + lectures for exams is INSANE. Classes would be better if all exams were non cumulative. Assignment wasn't too bad though. Only take classes with him if you're in 2-3 courses max. Funny old guy, but his classes are way too overwhelming.

Lectures are very entertaining. Fill in the blank notes. Used textbook for tests but a lot of overlap, so just look for key terms. Little epoll type things done at every chapter which is fun. Tests are hard though, you need to know how to apply. Assignment is easy if you read the rubric carefully.
