Lecturer changes every week, good intro course for psych.

Horrible teacher. Never teaches, always has some one else teach.
She takes her job as class coordinator too seriously. It is an intro class. Make it easier.
this lady is a holdover hippie!
She never taught. She never did anything. A waste of U money
This class was incredibly easy. I never went at all and I got an A. All you have to do is read the book. She explains that she doesn't teach the class, so I don't know why people were 'surprised' by this. Highly recommended if you want an easy A. :)
tests are too random
Kate does an outstanding job cordinating the psych 1001 program. She brings in the top people in each of the fields that are presented. This class is an absolute must-take for any and all students with even the slightest interest in psychology.
she's not good at what she does. they should change her. not responsive to students.
Professor Briggs has a high regard for all of her students. She answers questions in a quick manner and she is very helpful. Kate does not teach because that is not her role. She is the cordinator of 700 students per semester.
She doesn't actually do much of the teaching, guest lecturers do, so I don't know much about her teaching skills. Very clear about what will be exams--if you study what she tells you, you will do well. BUT--some of the detail expected is ridiculous.
The class was interesting, but the TA's were'nt very helpful and her tests were'nt really a fair judge of one's knowledge of the topic.
In a class with 700 students, Kate does well to make sure it is not a circus. The final is almost word-for-word from the previous exams (you are allowed to keep the test booklets) so remember those.
It is a difficult class and the tests are a pain. But if you put the work in you will be fine. Definately study the practice tests.
SHE isn't a very good teacher (always seemd frazzled), but the guest lectures (majority of the lectures) are ok. The tests are very in-depth, which makes them hard since so much material is covered.
She doesn't really teach. When she lectures she is very erratic and unclear. Some of the actual guest lectures aren't that bad, but the tests are really hard b/c they are so in depth and there is a lot of information to remember.
Kate is boring, unclear, and makes her class way too hard. She only gives about 3 lectures during the year, and they are terrible.
can't hear most of her guest lecture...waste of my time to go to
She can be helpful, like when she offered to raise my grade when I got sick, but I've also stood in front of her for 10 minutes after class with no acknowledgement. Also, some of these reviews don't seem to be writted by students
She's really helpfull and fun to talk to.
When she actually taught it was interesting enough, but its structure was far from stimulating
Her tests are impossible...
I really don't like her, and it's not because I just don't like Psychology. The tests are too hard and the learning objectives don't help because there is too much on there to remember. Also, ALMOST everything you need for a test will be in the book. I've found lectures unnecessary.
Most interesting class I took this semester. Can't say much about Kate since she barely lectured... its all guest lecturers. To do well on the test, know the *ALL* learning objectives. She also gives xtra credit points which raised my grade from a B to an A.
Boring and a waste of time. No reason to attend lecture.
Regardless of what most say, she did a better job of organizing this 700+ person class than any other instructor I've seen. She also does a lot to benefit the students (i.e., helpful curve, extra credit points, throws out confusing questions on tests, etc.).
Regardless of what most people say about her she is a great person. She did an excelent job at being mom to 700 kids. Be sure to do the learning objectives and e-mail her on anything you don't uderstand. Takes notes, do all the essays and you will do fine.
She is incredibly dedicated to her students, and works very hard. If you just go into her office and talk to her you would know this.
Don't freak out about your test scores--you get lots of points from the discussions sections!
The tests are very easy as long as you know the learning objectives she posts. Never really had any problems or concerns.
She comes off as being kind of weird on the first day, but the class is interesting.
definately agree with most of these posts in that the tests are very difficult, even for multiple choice. discussions are easy, and i raised my grade an entire letter grade from 13 rep points i got on the last 2 days i could. However, id say getting an A would be very hard to achieve

I am absolutely in love with this class. Kate Briggs makes all of the information very easy to understand with all of the Powerpoint presentations. I give her extra props because there are more than 700 people in the Psych 1001 class this semester. That takes some strength.
I definetly dig this class, and Kate. She's fun to listen to, I loved her lectures and she's great to talk to.
she teaches my honors discussion section and she seems to be very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. she expects students to prepare the work assigned but shes understanding or at least not too scary if you dont. she does a good job at explaining confusing topics and gives appropriate feedback on written assignments too.
lots of studying
people think kate grades hard on tests... and its ture. they are all multiple choice and difficult. I got b's and c's on all of them but still got an A in the class because she puts a lot of points into the discussion section and REP program. It's not a hard class to get an A in if you study like you should.
The class is tough, but she is so helpful and will take ANY time you need to make you understand better. The tests are difficult, but if you study and go to discussion and read your book, you should do fine. She is generous with curving and if you have any problems. Recommend her for sure.
This class was easy. Kate is very clear on what she expects of her 'scholars' and tells you straight up what you need to know. Lots of guest lecturers! Most test material could be gained from paying attention in the lectures, and reviewing the objectives before the test. Overall the class went great and plenty of extra credit to boost your grade
Powerpoints put me to sleep and thats all the class is.
I agree, lectures are very boring. It's not a very interesting class.
She was very clear about what we needed to study. She posted our grades online and kept the class updated through emails and the class website. She clearly defined how to get an A.
I'm an adult student. This class is somewhat intimidating when you walk in and realize you are competing with 700 people. You need to get all the extra credit points and, of course, not miss too many on the tests and it isn't very difficult.
Class is mostly guest lecturers. Consists mainly of average-quality Powerpoints. The book and discussion section were alot more interesting, but they like to put little details from lectures onto the multiple choice exams, so I would recommend going to class.
Kate didn't teach her own class, had different person giving notes every day, wasn't really around much, didnt do anything for the class, easy to get by w/o going to class!
Pretty boring; she boasts about the fact that the average grade on her tests is a 75%. I guess for a class of 700 she does what she can...
She's very knowledgeable and helpful. She was my favorite teacher of the semester.
very difficult tests. They feel like a 3000 level class.
kate seems like a nice lady, altough she never actually lectures. what a nice set up. the lectures are usually extremely boring, but some of the videos are interesting. tests arent too bad if you actually read the book and do the test objectives. Do the rep points, they help a LOT!
I really don't know how other people found this class difficult; a chapter a week is not that hard. The different lecturers that we had each week only made the class MORE interesting and the subject matter is very engaging. Kate Briggs is a very nice professor. I feel bad for instructors who get bad ratings because some students neglect to study.
I felt that Kate was a great prof. She has a lot of respect for the needs of every individual student in her class which is a lot to say for a class of over 700. She is always trying to clarify things and is constantly sending out emails to make sure all students are up to speed about changes in the class.
The class was very interesting, though I dont know how any one can really rate her for 1001, since she never taught us. We had other guest lecturers. Anyone can administer tests, and introduce other lecturers...
Kate makes you think there are curves for the midterms when they are actually fake. At the end of the semester she goes, "just kidding" and before you you can say Sigmund Freud, there never was a curve, haha. All the other Psych Professors are cool, just not Kate. She hates violent movies even though the Terminator is clearly better than her.
Its hard to really rate the teaching because most of the class is done by guest lectures. I took the class online and found it SOO much better then actually going to lecture. I would highly recommend taking it online if you can, especially if you dont like lectures in Wiley. Overall its a really interesting class and Kate is always willing to help.
She really didn't teach much, but she did a decent job when she was present. Probably anybody could do her job. It's easy to be distracted in such a big class(700 students). If you want to feel absolutely insignificant in a class, take this. That's why I took it!
Kate was great at managing a 800 person class. She was constantly sending emails and keeping everyone up to date. Her TA's are very helpful and well chosen for their jobs. She doesn't teach much but makes sure her students have everything they need to pass the class easily. Trust me if you have ANY issues she will help you with them!
If you see Kate Briggs as your professor for Psychology, get out! I can't warn you enough. Talk about monotoned, boring, and just not good. SHE IS TERRIBLE!... Changed grading school midway thru semester because she felt she liked her way better. She thinks she is British, she is cleary not!... If i hear "hello scholars" 1 more time I'm gonna snap!
I think that Kate Briggs is a warm, knowledgeable, classy lady. The class was challenging yet very informative and for the most part interesting. Even though the class is huge, she responds promptly to e-mails that I have sent her. She even asked me some questions about my personal life in the e-mail! That is amazing for a class of 700!
Is she really a professor? Or does she just have her "friends" come in and teach her class for her? I think the second one is true. Most of the guest lecturers were very bright and awful at communicating their topics. Overall I disliked the class very much, but know nothing about Kate because she really didn't do anything.
Kate is the coordinator of Intro psych. The class's huge size (800) means the department invests considerable effort into making the class well organized, fair, challenging. Some guest lecturers were mediocre, some great; great exposure to psych department. You will work hard if you want a good grade. Test mean usually a D. Learned a great deal.
You do have to work hard to get a decent grade in this course. And I think it's fairer to note the coordinating side of her teaching; she did a fantastic job of updating online lecture notes, emailing about any changes in the syllabus or test coverage, and putting together a review session before the test. During her lecturing, pacing was great.
I thought Psychology would be fun and interesting. Fortunately it is both, but not really due to Kate. The guest lectures are interesting. The parts of class she does take part in (i.e. writing the tests) aren't that great. I'm getting a decent grade, but just because the subject is fun doesn't mean she has to give unclear/unfair tests.
She only lectures the 1st week, you have a new lecturer every week. Some are awesome (Gerwitz, Gonzales), some know a lot and are really confusing (Bouchard), and some are just boring (too many to list). The tests are difficult in here... on midterm #1 the class average was 30/45. Discussion attendance is graded with an essay each week in class.
I am not sure why so many people have given Kate mediocre/bad ratings. I thought she did a phenomenal job organizing the course and updating the website given the size of the class. She really wants everyone to succeed, and is always willing to help anyone in person or via email. The tests were not that bad, you just have to memorize a lot.
Kate Briggs is an extremely helpful person, and I thought it was amazing that she was able to respond in a timely way to all of my email--given that I'm sure she received so many every day. The tests were very fair--if you know your stuff you should score in the mid to high 30s on all of them.
By far the worst and most difficult professor/teacher I have ever had. She makes this class impossibly hard, which is really, really stupid because the subject material COULD be interesting. DO NOT TAKE PSY 1001 FROM BRIGGS! YOU WILL REGRET IT! There's another prof that teaches the same course and I heard he's great...take his class!!!
Kate only lectures for the first week of class, otherwise ther are multiple guest speakers. I thought the format was very interesting and a new lecturer every week made it easier to keep my interest. The exams that she writes are very very difficult and she'll tell you that. This class requires A LOT of work. Kate herself is very relaxed and helpfu
Wonderful Professor! She prompty responds to emails. Clearly explains good understandable answers to questions, her exam review sessions are surely not to be missed. Her exams are very fair and easy if you read the text, attend lectures, do chapter quizzes and are in school to learn something. I highly recommend her for every opportunity.
This course plays out more like a 10,001 than the 1001 advertised. This is by far and away the most ridiculous class I have ever experienced. Let's be realistic here, Kate: on the first exam 2/1200 students scored 49/50? Come on. I regret signing up for this course, you will too.
She is technically incapable and is a very bad organizer of the class. I would not recommend this class to ANYONE unless it is required.
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous. It's a college course, and while it's not necessarily easy, her tests fair. A person with reasonable study habits should get an A or B. If this class is too hard for you maybe Normandale is a better option.
this is a very time-consuming class with a lot of little assignments that you must do in order to get a good grade! study JUST FROM THE STUDY GUIDES for the exams, TRUST me.
She doesn't teach! JUST READ THE TEXT BOOK & YOU WILL CERTAINLY GET AN A! Attend lecture because lots of the exam questions are on lectures. This class is mainly terminology, thus READ, READ, READ!
Kate Briggs is a wonderful woman who genuinely cares about her students & their performance in the course. Her tests are pretty challenging, but if you use the study guides, they tell you EXACTLY what you need to learn, word for word. If you have any questions or need help, she gladly offers it. And above all else, she loves to talk psychology.
This class was BY FAR more work than any other, but easy and interesting in my opinion. Kate herself doesn't teach the class, but she makes the exams. The questions on the exams are straight to the point, and I like that. Also, you get to retake the online chapter quizzes as many times as you'd like. It's stupid that some people don't.
I like having new professors every week, and the British guy is really interesting. If you have the chance to take this class, take it. It's a lot of studying, but you'll learn a lot (then again, I might be biased being a psych major).
All I have to say to students taking this class. It is very difficult!!!
Oh, Kate Briggs. While tests, assignments, and discussion sections were almost completely useless, she did bring in some top guest lecturers that were great to watch. All in all, if you have a strong love for psychology you'll probably make it through this class. Probably.
it was an interesting class, but a lot of work and a lot of material... i agree, the british lecturer guy is the best!
The class is A LOT of work if you want an A. Look to spend most of your time reading because the test material is mostly based off of the reading. If you put your work in, it's not a hard class. Not too sure what Kate does other than make the tests but she is very fair in her grading.
Tests are done in a computer lab. Study guides are alot! Too much info to study for a possible 200 questions which only 50 will be on tests. Some students might prefer taking test on paper instead. Tests should be about terms and stuff learned in class/textbook, applying them is too much for a student to handle. Avg test score is in the 30s.
kate gives the students (or as she calls scholars) a lot of respect. She is also very understanding. Her role in Psy 1001 is to coordinate the whole lecture experience, and she's good at it. She's very understanding. The class requires effort to get an A, but your effort will be rewarded.
Kate has a lot of respect for her "scholars" While it is an introductory course, it is very challenging.not a class to take lightly. exams are very difficult, and are not what you expect. If i were to start over i would study harder and longer. SHe does reward you for doing better on your final then you overall test average by a higher grade!
As long as you take the time to do the study guides, which have HUNDREDS of questions, then you can be pretty sure you'll get a good grade. I got A's and B's on my exams cuz I did the SG's. Lecture is pointless. Just look at the lecture notes online and you should do fine.
This class is a total joke. Just read the entire chapter on a weekly basis and the quizzes/exams become so obviously easy. I don't have anything against Kate Briggs, but I wasn't super fond of the whole 300 different lecturers thing.
Lecture wasn't terribly helpful although interesting. I got an A- in this class by reading the book thoroughly and acing the "easy points" such as quizzes/discussion hw. Its best too not fill out the study guides but just make sure you understand the general idea then you should be able to apply them to the easy tests.
Mostly guest speakers, some are interesting, others not so much. Overall, class doesn't seem to hard... I don't actually read the chapters, and take notes on all the vocab in the chapters before exams... and do the chp quizzes before exams as well. I recommend going to lecture, because there are specific test questions related to lectures.
it is all pretty much guest speakers. by far the HARDEST introductory course i have ever taken. tests are not easy and she is not the most approachable woman either!
Tests were RIDICULOUS along with the quizzes that correspond with the chapters. Most of the tests cover the lectures, so I would not recommend reading the chapters. It makes the class even more unbearable. However, the book is extremely useful when taking the chapter quizzes. The best tip for this class is to memorize and understand the study guide
Exams were ridiculously hard, no matter how much I studied. Having the study guide for each exam was particularily helpful though. Being able to do the chapter quizzes unlimited amount of times was nice and the 20 possible points of EC was a tremendous help. Some of the lecturers were not the greatest, but most were bearable. Interesting but hard!
The tiny amount of respect I had for psychology is now completely gone having taken this class. It's basically information overload to the point where you end up getting nothing out of the course.
There is a new lecturer every unit, which I enjoy because Kate herself seems like she would be a pretty boring lecturer; granted there are some boring ones but also soem interesting ones. If actually read the book you'll probably do better, but realistically your probably not going to actually read it. I recommend going to most of the lectures!
New lecturers each unit, so talking about the class in general: there is A LOT of information, but fortunately there are a lot of easy points as well. It will be time consuming, but you SHOULD read all of the textbook chapters, it will definitely help. Tests are pretty tough, so make sure you know the concepts on the study guides pretty well.
A lot of information, but reading the book (the entire thing!) does help. Study guides are a huge help for the tests, which are still tough, and if you missed a lecture you could listen to it online in iTunes! Overall a hard class, but with the right amount of work you can do well.
This class now has a new textbook. I just got done with this class in Fall 2010 and I enjoyed it, but I'm biased because I'm a psych major. It's a challenging course, so don't expect it to be a walk in the park if you're just trying to get your Social Science LER done. It is an interesting and useful class though. You'll definitely learn a lot.
There are a lot of negative comments about Kate and PSY 1001, but honestly, if you put a little effort forth it is not that hard of a course. It's challenging yes, but it's not unbearable. That's how a college course should be. Kate is a very nice coordinator and is always willing to help if you need it. This course is definitely a weed out course.
You have to read the book and go to lecture at least some of the time if you expect to get a decent grade. Everyone who complains about how hard it is probably refused to read. It is a hard class though. Not a cake walk like I expected that's for sure. Still got that A baby. LOL
Fantastic coordinator for one of the most well-organized, enlightening classes I've taken at the U. Thanks to the series of guest lecturers, I now have a better grasp of what areas of psych interest me most.
For being an entry-level, overview-type class with a ton of material covered, I felt that many of the exam questions were way too specific. Also there were a number of technology hiccups that were at times frustrating. On the plus side, there are a lot of opportunities for easy points that help make up for the difficult exams.
I did not like how the class was taught by a different professor every week. This made things a little bit confusing. However, Kate did a great job of managing the huge class. Always emailed me back promptly. It was a very challenging class but not outrageously difficult. The more effort you put in the more you will get out of the class.
The class is not easy and if you do poorly in it you really only have yourself to blame. Most of the points you earn are controlled by you. You have to read the book in order to earn the 80 points from the chapter quizzes. Also you definitely need to get all the extra credit points you can from the REP studies.
This class is not an easy class when it comes to tests, however, there are many "easy to earn" points and you have the possibility of earning extra credit as well. I loved this professor and this class in general- although not easy it was definitely interesting and the professor and TAs were beyond helpful!
PSY1001 is taught by many profs, but Dr. Briggs organizes the whole shebang and does a pretty good job if you think about everything she has to coordinate between teachers, students, and TAs. The class was harder than anticipated but definitely interesting! Dr. Briggs is approachable. I recommend her class.
The tests are extremely difficult, so do the 20 REP points! If you study and do the REP points, then it is easy to get an A. She also replies to emails very quickly and gives thorough answers to your questions.
Midterm Exams are very difficult, so be sure to do the REP study points for extra credit. Also be sure to do the exam study guides which focus your studying from the long chapters. Lectures are all online, so if you can't make class, be sure to watch them online. Be sure to go to discussion sections--easy points.
Don't get the course confused with the professor. Her over-all ratings don't do her justice. The class is hard to get an A in but Kate is very helpful, approachable, and sincere about her work. Tells you exactly what you need to know if you ask. Take advantage of easy points, and read the book and you'll do fine.
Like the comment before mine, do not get the class confused with the facilitator. Kate is wonderful- extremely helpful and understanding of circumstances. The class itself is NOT difficult IF YOU DO WHAT YOU'RE ASSIGNED.3/5 of your grade is easy points (chapter quizzes that you take as many times as you want, open book) and discussions, do REP pts.
At the beginning of the semester she tells you that the quizzes are based off the book and the midterms are based off of lectures. This is entirely false. The final was ridiculous with how specific of concepts they expected you to memorize from reading it in the book once. I did all the study guides and it barely helped on the final.
Kate is so kind-hearted, and truly wants every student to well in the class. She will answer any questions you email her promptly and thoroughly. Do the practice exams before each test, and review ANY concepts brought up in those questions. Also read, get the discussion points, do the chapter quizzes, some REP studies, and you should be set for an A!
Kate Briggs is NOT the instructor for this course, she's the director. Experts from the UMN Psych department lecture for their specific topics. With that being said, PSY1001 is a great class. I learned a lot of interesting material. Quite difficult, but if you read the textbook and attend/watch lectures you should be fine. A lot of extra credit.
Kate is not actually the lecturer for this class - it changes every few classes. Overall, the class was not too difficult. Exams were tougher and tended to be very specific, but if you do the extra credit and go to discussion and do the study guides, the course is an easy a.
Kate is AWESOME! The lecturers change from class to class but they all do a thorough job explaining. Most of the class is graded by easy points. It's not easy and it's not hard. It's time consuming and the exams have specific questions. Understand the concepts, get the easy points, and complete all the REPS and you will get an A.
She rarely lectures but the lecturers are members of the faculty and very good. I took this class online, but everybody takes the tests together in a computer lab. When you go in you hand her your ID card then when you leave she hands it back. I was very surprised, when I came up to get it she knew my name without me reminding her.
She is very helpful. I went to get some assistance with why my tests were turning out the way they were and she was happy to meet with me and spend time going over each and every question and assessing why I got that question wrong.
Really loved the class and Kate! She's not super involved, but if you make the effort to go up and talk to her/email her questions, she's really good about responding clearly!
Kate is always approachable with questions and responds quickly and courteously. I really appreciated having her there to help. She only does two lectures, I think, and the guest speakers vary, but are usually really interesting to listen to.
Kate Briggs is a great professor and very forgiving at the end of the semester when putting grades in.
Quality teaching. But lots of painful work for this intro class. Weekly assignments: reading chapters, answer quizzes (painful because you have to get 100% to get all the points), essay, homework assignment for discussion session and group work. All requires almost near perfect to get the full points.
Run as fast as you can away from Kate Briggs. She doesn't really teach because she is just the PSY1001 coordinator, but she is incredibly rude and condescending. I do not recommend at all.
There are guest lecturers for the class, and she just coordinates! Tests are hard, but do the study guide and practice tests. Understand the concepts, but it's mostly memory! Keep on top of the homework. Most isn't officially due until the end of the semester, but it's not fun trying to write 16 essays in a night! Show up to discussion bc easy pts.
If you are struggling in PSY, see her! She will help you develop a plan to get the best possible grade. Kind and understanding. PSY is a very demanding class, more than I thought I would be. I would not take it coming in as a first semester freshman.
Kate is just the coordinator. There are guests lecturers each week and they are usually the top psychologists in their fields! There is a lot of work for this class but if you can keep up, not procrastinate (too badly at least) and put in 6-8 hours a week outside of class, it's not that hard to get an A or B.
I seriously can't stand her, but you should still take the class. She is just a coordinator and you won't see her that much. The class is an easy A, but there is so much assignments. 16 essays, 16 chapter quizzes, and a lot of discussion homework. There are three midterms and one final. Not to mention three lectures a week. Her voice annoys me!
This class is fine if you're okay with lots and lots of assignments. Chapter quizzes, online essays, discussion homework, plus lectures and tests. But if you're fine with doing all that work, you'll get decent grades on the test because they force you to work with the material. Kate seems passionate about her job but it's a big class
Kate is the coordinator for psych 1001, not an actual professor. Put in the work, do the extra credit opportunities, and you will end up with a good grade in the course. She is very helpful and prompt at responding to emails. The grading and the syllabus is very cut, so you know exactly where you are throughout the semester.
Seems like a nice person, but never responds to emails. Extremely frustrating.
DO NOT fall behind on quizzes, essays, homework, & readings. Attend all discussion sections & lectures (onlinein-person). Tests are TOUGH, but she can help you get through it if you ask. Bad grade on test? Review your test w her & she can help fix your grade too, but YOU have to take the initiative to meet with her. Complete all EC & REP pts!
Kate is the director of the class. You're very lucky if you get a response to an email from her. A lot of work, and to be honest I didn't learn much. Each chapter is crammed with info you don't need to know for the exam-I lived off the study guides. Good tip-google the study guides for ones that are already filled out. Try hard and you'll do well!
Kate is a coordinator for this class more than an instructor- every week we had a different professor teach that weeks topic. The class is a lot of work, but if you make the effort, it will show in your grade. Do not get behind in the weekly writing assignments or quizzes. Take the practice exams a lot- they really help. Try and keep up in the text
Tested on so much content it's a wonder this class isn't split into 4 semesters. There are multiple lecturers. Kate has great charisma. Some of the others, not so much. Overall a decent course with a heavy workload.
The lectures are given by guest speakers who are experts in their fields. She is very good at facilitating and accommodating students testing needs and answering any questions. There are a ton of writing assignments and the book is a must.
I sleptskipped every single lecture day. All you need to do is fill out the study guides provided and you are golden. Towards the end of the semester I was able to fill them out more during the actual lecture which was nice. Don't wait to do the quizzes and writing assignments, the writing assignments require some time!
Completely ruined any interest I had in Psychology, the test were very difficult and she expects you to do hours of prepping for the test. Even the study guide takes a couple days to get done. Be ready to work if you're planning on taking this course.
Worst teacher I've ever had, do not take this course unless you have to.
This class isn't hard but takes up a lot of time. Get all of the extra credit that you can. Do the practice exams over and over again and learn from wrong answers. The exams are almost identical to the practice exams. Literally do them until you get near perfect scores. Don't lose any of the easy points. Class takes up a lot of time though.
She did an amazing job of orchestrating the largest class here, and I was able to learn a ton in this class.
You get an essay every week in a non-writing intensive class. Lectures are a joke and don't help, read the book and don't go to the lecture. The study guide doesn't work at all. Tests are harder than they should be. For all those interested in Psych, take this class and then come tell me if you still want to major in it. Grade killer and weed out.
A lot of homework but psychology 1001 is very interesting and the U of M department is phenomenal
Lectures from guests, so quality varies. Moodle is essential to the class. Essays are auto-graded and you have one per week, plus a chapter quiz, 30-60 pages of reading, and 3 midterms + final exam. Actually not that hard if you just do the work and keep up, plus the subject material is fascinating. Great intro science class, emphasis on method.
Do not recommend taking the online portion. There are weekly discussions and it is essential you participate by the deadlines or you wont pass. There is a ton of extra work require in order to get a decent grade. It is really easy to slip up and fall behind in this course. A lot of the work like online essays and quizzes are graded really harshly.
Kate Briggs was an amazing professor. She does very well at facilitating the largest class at the U of M and makes a good effort to make sure everything is explained very well in terms of grading. She responds very quickly to questions asked to her and is very lenient in terms of grading. As long as you stay on top of your homework, you'll be fine.
There's actually a different lecturer each week for the class. Some lecturers are very interesting and others are extremely boring, it all depends on the subject matter. You have to read a chapter, take a quiz, write an essay, and do homework each week. The workload is heavy and the tests require a lot of studying to do well.
Yes, this is a massively complex class, but here's why: all the extra little assignments and quizzes are there to PAD YOUR GRADE so that you can get C's on the exams and end with an A. It's a fair class. USE THE STUDY GUIDES or you'll cover extra info. I did the hybrid version and loved it. A friend did the online version and had a hellish time.
