Prof. Jensen provided the most clear explanations and examples I have ever seen from a professor, in a class (Formal Languages and Automata Theory) which did not lend itself to simplicity. Her grading policy was not quite accurate (each randomly graded HW question was effectively 2% of your grade), but the midterm and final were very fair.

Lectures were clear and the midterm was fine. I didn't love the textbook, as the answers in the back of the book often didn't show complete answers. Homeworks were graded harshly and were 55% of the grade. Professor was hard to contact and all lectures were recorded in Fall 2020. Didn't really seem like she put much effort into teaching the class.

Kate Jensen is a middle of the road professor in my book. There were a lot of downsides: lack of availability, lectures over a year old, and a complete ban on working with other people. This said, if you are going to take the course, she is not a bad option. Homework and midterms are fair and match what is expected for the credit load.

Lectures were youtube videos posted from last fall, and many of them didn't really help as well as they should have for homework. She is very hard to reach via email/oh, but the ta's were solid. Class is probably much better in person, but a real dissapointment via online class.

This class felt unnecessary... as a CSCI class. Overall, the teaching/lecturing was utter garbage. Don't want to attack any personalities, but this class really needs to get better for the students. The prof. seemed like she really didn't care about the students' education with how lazy it all seemed. My advice to future students: GO ELSEWHERE!

I really like Prof. Jensen. Every interaction I had with her was respectful. Her lectures were clear and easy to follow. I think her rating is heavily dragged down by the course she teaches, CSCI 2011. Its the hardest math class CSCI students have to take early on. In the online format, it was difficult to get help in the class. Not enough TAs.

I really enjoyed this class with Kate. I think some people may be more frustrated with the content than with Kate herself. Her explanations were very thorough and clear, something I valued greatly. Both reading and watching lectures was very necessary which I think was lost on some people. Prerecorded lectures worked just fine.

Kate is a fantastic example of what you want in a Computer Science professor. She cares about students, has great lectures with examples that are very easy to follow, and is very good at creating quizzes that reflect going above and beyond. I did have to work harder than I expected, but nonetheless a great professor in a great class.

Professor Jensen was very down to earth and intelligent. The class itself is pretty confusing but I thought she taught it fairly well. She did not post the lectures or have a good policy to deal with if you got sick and missed assignments. Doing the assignments early to get help is my recommendation there is at lease two a week.

I took my first level 4000 comsci class with this professor and although she definitely aspects you to take her class seriously, and do the assigned readings and problems, after having a mental health episode she went out of her way to accommodate me and made sure I could continue her course, something many professors would not do.

If "just try harder" was a professor it would be Kate. I would recommend taking this difficult class with a professor that gives more material to learn from, as the textbook does the heavy lifting here. Overall just decent at best.

Kate is a good teacher that explains things in a good amount of detail during lectures. There are no slides and no posts on canvas for notes, so if you don't go to class have fun reading 20 pages of the textbook. The course is content heavy and feels like we never truly master a topic before moving on. This class feels harder than it should be tbh.

If you take her - all semester you are going to struggle with homework, reading, grading, searching for the information, and self-teaching. TA's never on a same page with professor, so do not even hope for a good score on that. Exams are long and concepts heavy, class average is 60, but good luck even get to that.

She refused to upload notes online and was surprised that the midterm average was 60%. Homework heavy but tests make up 75% of your grade. It feels like she doesn't want students to succeed. Tests are long and hard and she won't provide review material or any exam guidelines. I don't think she cares about students feedback or their success.

Professor Jensen lacks the ability to make students understand the material she is teaching. It is clear that SHE understands it but she often go through topics extremely fast and it never really feels like I understand something completely before we move on. On top of this, she never seems prepared coming to class. She is often late.

Lectures are unclear and unengaging. The professor seems to want students to succeed but wants nothing less than to give the students more resources other than the textbook. Attendance is optional but may as well be mandatory given that you'd be stuck reading the incredibly dense textbook otherwise.

The class follows closely along with the textbook. Lectures were much more digestible than the book and cleared up confusing parts. Midterms and final were 75% of grade and were overall not that bad. All tests are open notes which made them a lot easier. The professor was very approachable and helpful during office hours.

Such a good and smart prof, I really enjoyed her class and thought she was great at explaining difficult concepts. You have to go to lecture and read the assigned textbook sections. Going to her office hours and the discussion wont hurt either. Do not expect to get a good grade without putting in any effort. 100% would take another of her classes

I liked her lectures because she would write on the whiteboard and explain things step by step. HOWEVER, no notes were posted so you need a friend. Homework every 2-ish weeks (didn't grade too harshly). 5 ish weeks before the end of the sem, our class went online. TA's weren't very helpful for hw bc even they didn't get an answer key...

The tests are insanely hard to finish on time, and they are worth a huge chunk of your grade. She does not post slides, or even have slides. Nothing is recorded, so everything is done on a whiteboard yet the handwriting is often times messy. The homeworks are intentionally very long and hard. Save your gpa, take this class with a better insturctor.

Prof Jensen does an amazing job of bringing the course material to life, always going out of her way to clearly break down complex concepts, then illustrate their purpose and relevance. This makes understanding the course content easy for students who put in the effort to. Fair warning, though, students who just blindly memorize do very poorly.

There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to not either post slides or record lectures. We paid to take the class and shouldn't be restricted from the material if unable to attend in person. Simply reading the textbook is not a valid alternative. Tests were also very hard to finish on time (again, no reason to make it like this) and the homework was difficult.

*I took CS220 at UW-Madison with Kate. She's a really nice person; however, her lectures are equivalent to reading off the slides. Your grade is made up of weekly online assignments, which are time-consuming, but a free 100%. The tests are a majority of trick questions, which is annoying. If you have experience with Python/coding, it's not too bad
