Kate did an awesome job teaching calc 1. She is very clear in her expectations. Her tests are very fair and pretty much follow the review. She is super helpful during office hours if you take the time to get help. I got points back on my exam when I went to go through my it with her. The final follows the exams..use those to study for the final.
She's really really good
Kate is the best. She is a real human being unlike most professors. totally approachable, grading is very fair, and she is just an overall good teacher. really cares about her students :)
Kate is a great teacher! She explains everything in great detail. I had her for college algebra and finite calculus, and she is great! Kate also give a test review which is exactly like the tests.
Really liked her! Super friendly, delivers information in a very straight-forward manner. Test weren't tricky in any way, reviews helped a lot. Would definitely recommend!
Kate is the best math teacher I've ever had. She really knows her stuff and does an excellent job! She made math so easy, she used lots of examples and told you exactly what you needed to know to ace exams. She didn't go too fast or too slow, and the hw was pretty easy-there is a lot of it though. Take any class you can from Kate, she's the best!
Kate is a great professor. The best I have ever had in math. It's hard to come by a good math teacher. I would definitely recommend her.
Her Finite class is awesome. Very helpful, exams are challenging but a B is achievable if you study enough. Definitely recommend her.
Click questions, weekly homework, easy exams, and weekly quizzes. Just stay on top of it and you'll be fine.
Kate is amazing! Best math prof I have ever had! She truly cares about her students and will go out of her way to help you. If you are going to take finite or calc make sure you take it with her. You won't regret it for a second. Definitely would recommend her to everyone!!
Kate is the best math teacher there is at UMD. She truly cares about her students and wants you to do well in her class. Her leture and notes are very easy to follow along with and she will answer any question that is asked. If you don't understand that, she will keep trying new ways to explain it until you do. Always willing to help you one on one
Kate is an awesome teacher, she does everything she can to help you and wants you to be successful. Her tests are exactly whats covered in class and no surprises. She really does an excellent job. Would recommend over any other math teacher at UMD.
She's Super!! Very organized and really cares about teaching.
Gives good examples in class. What is on the homework is exactly what is on the quizzes and tests. My only issue with Kate is that she brings her emotions and bad moods to class. If you skip classes she takes it very personally. It's very unprofessional.
Best math teacher I have ever had. Explains the coarse material in a way that people new to the particular subject can clearly understand. Very helpful when asked a question and always helpful in her office hours.
Kate is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. She is extremely helpful in her office hours and will explain topics in many different ways until you understand. Like with any class you have to study, but her great personality and ability to teach makes it that much easier.
Kate is a fantastic math teacher. She is great at explaining a tough concept in a way that someone new to the subject can clearly understand. If you need more help she is always ready to give one on one help in her office hour. I highly recommend Kate, and I have not had a better teacher at UMD in math or any other subject.
Kate is the best math instructor i have ever had! she actually tries to get to know her students and really wants everyone to know math. she's not afraid to yell at people that are being disruptive and is overall a great prof. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Best college math teacher ever. She actually cares about each of her students. Would recommend her for anyone who wants to take Pre-Calc, Calc I or III. I wish I have another class with her simples.
Kate is the best prof ever; I have had both Calc II and Calc III with her. She is always willing to help, gives consistent, informative notes, and writes challenging, but doable tests. Do your homework, go to her office hours with questions, and there is no reason you shouldn't obtain a fairly good grade. Colleges need more profs like her!
Very clear, easy to learn from. Fair grading. Work load is fair.
She is the best math teacher! She was so willing to help students. When going to office hours she was not intimidating at all. The examples from class were very similar to the homework, quizzes and exams. If you need to take this class work your schedule so you can take it with her! so worth it!
Kate is the best math teacher I've ever had! The examples she gives in class and the quizzes are similar to the questions on the test. If you have any questions, she is always willing to help you and explain everything again!
I had her for Calc 3 and it was the best math class I've taken at UMD. She's super helpful in and outside of class. Her lectures make it super easy to understand, but you don't HAVE to go because you don't lose points for not going and she puts notes online!
Very clear in lecture and super helpful out of class. I don't typically enjoy math classes and Kate did a great job I enjoyed her class. She posts all her notes online and has a great website.
If you pay attention, you pass
Kate is one of the best teachers at UMD, hands down.
Kate was very helpful during office hours. She always seemed to have a good way to explain one-on-one. She seems like a little intimidating in lecture but once you go to her office hours you will think completely different! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Kate is a good teacher, the work load as far as homework isn't bad. She grades things beyond quickly, she just grades tough.
Attend class if you want to pass. If you work even a little bit you can get a B, and if you work relatively hard you can reach the A range. Highly helpful, office hours are nice. Grades with partial credit on quizzes and test which is nice. Weekly quizzes during discussions.
Fairly easy class. Gives a lot of assignments and quizzes. Very important to go to class other wise you will fall behind, she also gives extra credit on days that not many people show up.
Kate is seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. She explains everything in lectures so well. She also puts her notes online, which is a huge plus. She gives out a fair amount of extra credit (I think I got at least 12 points). The class itself was fairly easy. Her tests are very straight forward and she doesn't try to trick you at all.
Take her for Calc 3. She explains concepts very well.
Kate is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. I'm not a math person and I ended up doing really well in the class. She explains expectations and is very approachable via e-mail or in person.
Went from failing Calc in high school to acing in college. Seriously the best math instructorprof I have ever had. Would highly recommend.
If I could, I would hire Kate to teach me every single math and science class I have to take. She can grade a little inconsistently between homework and tests, but she explains everything so that it's crystal clear. Plus her handwriting is flawless and she's a pro note-writer.
Kate is awesome. However, lectures are long, dry, and just boring overall. Being in class really does help though. It's a winlose. Definitely one of the best professors in the math department.
Calculus becomes a piece of cake with Instructor Niedzielski. Her handwriting is perfect and lectures are simple to follow. Don't skip class because concepts make much more sense after watching her go through examples. Tests aren't too difficult IF you study. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS! Go to class right before vacations possible extra credit!
Great professor keeps her website up to date and pretty much takes notes for you and posts them online. Labs suck a lot but there's only 8-9 of them.
Kate has the ability to break down even the most difficult concepts into their basic components and help the class to understand. Her notes are colorful and detailed, and she posts all of her notes online. Going to class is important but if you HAVE to miss her online notes help a lot. Tests are hard, but if you study you will definitely pass.
Kate is a great Calc teacher compared to other ones I have had before. She gives weekly homework assignments and quizzes that are a larger percentage of your grade. Her notes are easy to follow and she always puts them online after lecture. Would recommend her and take her again if I had to go on with Calc.
I had her for calc 2 and 3 and I like her alot. she explains the materials clearly. As long as you do the home works, try to actually learn and go over her slides, you will get a grade above B-.
Great professor, would recommend to anyone and everyone! Very helpful and explains things very well.
Class is hard as hell but she's fair and it's doable
Kate is an amazing professor. Online homework due every Monday by midnight, a quiz every Tuesday, and written homework is due every Thursday. Lots of work but the way she teaches it will help you for following classes. Would 10/10 recommend.
Kate is amazing. Lots of homework, but her lectures are really great and she's always available to help during office hours. I will take more classes from her in the future, and I'll always recommend her to everyone that has to take a math course!
Provides incredible notes. Requires integration by hand on exams. Passionate about making sure each student understands the material. Approachable outside of class.
Kate is an excellent teacher and is makes the best use of her electronic notepad interface of any of my professors. Her notes are easy to understand and she instantly posts them online so you hardly miss a beat if you can't attend class. Absolutely uses technology to benefit the students. Take her if you can.
Kate is a great teacher. However the way the class is set up is a waste of time. You have to fill out 30-60 pages of a notebook every week, by coping down word for word info out of the book ( this was kind of a waste of my time my mind ) plus homework problems , plus a quiz every week. to much work and some of policies were unfair.
She's one of the best Professors in the math department, and will make understanding math surprisingly easy, even for those with the most trouble. She gives very informative lectures that are just interesting enough to keep you awake. Kate is an extremely nice and personable professor, but she's also an extremely smart person.
Great Teacher!!
Kate is one of the best and most respected professors I've heard of. She gives great lectures that are in depth and clear. Calc II wasn't easy but I think taking it with Kate is the best choice. Hoping to get in her class for Calc III
Kate is a great professor and her teaching style is very clear. The first half of calc 2 is not very difficult but don't get to comfortable because the second half is very different from what was taught in calc 1. Pay attention to what she talks about in lecture and you will do fine.
Kate is a fantastic professor who teaches with amazing lectures that well explain all of the concepts nicely. Her style of teaching is very good and seems to agree with most students.
She seems great, but when it came to getting accomidations for my disability she was very very rude to me.
Kate is def the best prof I have had. The way she teaches makes calc so easy to understand. I have always felt too uncomfortable and to office hours of my professors to get help. However, not with Kate. I feel comfortable asking Kate questions after class or going to her office hours. She is so patient and understands you have life outside of class
Lectures aren't terrible, notes are available, concepts are explained reasonably, but often skips/combines steps while doing problems and switches between notations seemingly at random within the same problem, making it difficult to follow. If you go to office hours she's less than helpful, unfortunately, every time I went I was brushed off.
Good prof, great math resources, good classes. I like everything about how the course is taught except for the fact that the guided notebook assignments are way too long and pointless. They're the worst "busy work" assignments I've seen since high school. Other than that, there are so many people to help in the math center that you should do fine.
Kate excels in teaching. She cares, is very straight foreword, and loves what she does. You will have homework due Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with a quiz on Tuesdays. There is a lot of work to go along with the class but the work in a great way to learn calculus II. I would highly recommend taking a class with Kate.
Kate is such a great professor, she truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. While the content can get a bit tricky, she is always there to help out. Homework can get a bit lengthy but exams are not bad at all, very similar to her reviews.
Kate's notes are really neat and it makes her lectures easy to follow. She also has a great personality and makes the content interesting. She likes to challenge you on exams, but she is very generous with partial credit. She also has a lot of opportunities for extra credit, just don't skip class!! I would totally recommend her to anyone.
Kate is very organized and the way she teaches makes it easy to follow! I enjoyed going to class and she was super easy to talk to both in and out of class. The guided notebooks are easy to complete, but take time, so plan to work ahead in them.
Kate is a great person and professor. I did find that her exams in Diff Eq and Calc 2 were a bit harder than some of the other professors. She makes you work a bit for an A. She is always available to help in office hours and is very easy to talk to. She did a great job at explaining the material. She only has Labs, Exams, and HW in Diff Eq.
Kate is one of the best professors I have had so far at UMD. She is very organized and her lectures are clear and to the point. Though she does post her lecture notes online I would still recommend going to class, it makes the material much easier to understand. Overall, I would absolutely recommend having Kate as a professor provided the chance.
Kate is really clear with her class schedule and what's to be expected. Her home-page had a calendar with scheduled events weeks ahead of time. Her hand writing is easy to read, and she posts her notes on her website for review if you happen to miss anything. She's very kind and is available outside of class.
kate niedzielski is not a good professor. not available outside of class hardly ever as her class sizes are large and her office hours are very limited. would not recommend.
Kate outlines what it takes to do well in her class, and she assigns a lot of HW and suggested HW in order to push yourself to attain the concepts and tricks she wants to test you on the exam. As time goes, the class gets more smooth and builds on itself rather well. Put in the extra work in the HW and you will be prepared for her exams!
Kate is an amazing teacher, my favorite. She has an organized schedule, is helpful during office hours, has amazing handwriting for notes that she also posts online, and doesn't make you memorize many formulas (like 10). She also does group quizzes! It is cheaper to buy the textbook only online, and anyway the paper copy is like 3 in of loose leaf.
One of the few great professors in the UMD math department. The lecture notes are posted up online, exams are straight forward, and she encourages you to study for the exams with the textbook, which is actually much better than a study guide. Only downside (like most math classes) is the diffiulty of labs! (Also, her office hours are very helpful).
I did better on the concepts I had to teach myself than the concepts I learned in lecture.
Kate is probably the worst professor I have ever had. Keep in mind I have never gotten lower than B+ in math until her class. She is condescending, rude, uncaring, the list goes on. She doesn't teach you anything. All she does is "go over" problems and doesn't explain anything and just expects you to get it. Please do not take this class with her.
This class embodies the philosophy of professors assigning extra homework because they don't have to grade it (Pearson does it for them). The guided notebook is easy, but ridiculously time consuming. Coordinating with unwilling groupmates for group homework is an absolute pain. The Pearson homework is horribly inconsistent, and way too specific.
Decent but because Eriks class is the same thing but way easier thats the only reason I rated her so low. Good teacher, but erik is a much better choice. A good amount of homework seems like a lot at first but once you get in a routine its not bad.
Exams are hard- no calc or notes allowed.. other precalc teachers such as Eric E allow both... Honestly without the her AWESOME ta's I wouldn't of been super successful in this class.. lots of individual work, you teach yourself from the textbook, Kate is very responsive in emails.. however not much teaching besides some videos for math problems.
Heres the thing about this prof. that really bugs me: her Ta's taught more than she ever did. Everything is on Pearson for homework and quizzes, and its very heavy work and the guided notebooks are VERY time consuming instead of being able to actually be taught in lecture videos. Kates good at responding to emails but I was still very frustrated!!
This class probably would have been better in person, but online was just not the best for this semester. Professor Niedzielski is very caring and understanding, but I wish that she would have had an assigned zoom meeting for the class to ask questions and learn rather than making us watch the videos ourselves.
Lots, lots of hw. 50 questions every week, around 50 pages of notes at beginning of week, quiz every week + group project every week. Hated it. guided notebook was just extra work that I learned nothing from, just had to write alot. Group projects sucked, who does that for math?? Her videos were ok, but she only put them out sometimes. Took online.
Took this class online and pretty much had to teach myself everything. So much homework each week its very overwhelming
Kate is a very good instructor who walks through problems very well and is very lenient on assignments. Unfortunately there is no lecture component to this class and the majority of your learning comes from doing 50+ pages a week of "guided notes" which are essentially fill in the blanks from the text book and lots of practice problems.
Kate is an incredibly caring and reasonable teacher. I had her for pre-calc and whenever I was struggling with that weeks assignments (the guided notebook is ALOT), she always worked with me to get it in the next day. There is a lot of homework and the gn sucks, but if you just try your best to get the work done, Kate will help you succeed.
She explains things really well and tests are easy compared to homework. She's nice and really wants everyone to succeed.
Kate is a great professor, but the workload is insane. You should plan on spending 2-3 hours every night on math homework.
The guided notebook was rough, but shes really nice and available outside of class.
Lots and lots of homework, but its understandable since you only spend 2 hours a week in class. Those 2 hours are well spent, she's very good at lecturing. I wouldn't call the class particularly hard, but it will eat up a lot of your time. Exams don't deal with ugly numbers, she designs them nicely, and is somewhat lenient on grading.
Make sure to consistently practice the topics covered because the quizzes are created by the textbook not her. Also she's a very fair grader if the concept is decently understood but not correctly done on an exam she will still give fair partial credit. Probably one of my absolute favorite classes I've ever taken. She makes math fun!
She was by far the best math professor I have ever had. Tons of opportunity for extra credit and most of it requires little to no extra work. The lectures are worth going to as they teach you everything that will be on the quizzes and tests and the examples are often the same questions with different numbers
Kate is a good professor however there is a lot of homework (guided notebook&online hw) due each week. Attendance is mandatory as they require you to scan your ucard + attendance points. This semester they introduced math lab which requires 100 minutes each week. Based on how well you did on exams + overall grade the minutes can get reduced.
Good at making math understandable. Easy to get along with.
Just amazing breaks difficult things down into easy to understand chunks 10/10 recommend.
The course itself was pretty easy however there was way too much homework especially for a class that gives you no credits towards. This made the class difficult for me as I struggle with depression. She was aware of this and I even received accommodations for extended due dates. Regardless of this she did not care at all. Felt very let down.
Kate was an awesome professor and made calc decently easy to understand. All the quiz and test questions come from the suggested hw problems so be sure to study those. Only thing I had trouble with is she crams so much into her lectures and talks/writes at 1.5 speed so you're basically just scribbling down notes the entire time instead of learning.
She lectures very well, and all her notes are posted after. Quiz questions all come from the textbook questions she assigns beforehand. She's a little bit of a procrastinator, but still get things done in time. Overall, a fantastic professor.
I took Pre-Calc for her twice (I failed the first time, which was completely my fault). This is a weed-out class, its very time and work intensive, I would personally say 10-20 hours a week easily. DO NOT GET BEHIND ON THE WRITTEN NOTEBOOKS THEY WILL KILL YOU LATER.
Most enjoyable professor I've had in the math department by far. Lectures are extremely helpful, she walks through all of the notes with the class rather than teaching from slides, and shows step by step how to solve problems. Online homework assignments are easy, and the test questions are pulled directly from a provided list from the textbook.
When I took her in 2020 she was one of the only professors that really knew her stuff when it came to math. On top of that, really easy to connect with. She also really cares about your progress as long as you're willing to put in that same effort. Not sure if they do the Math lab anymore, but I hope they nuked that idea to the ground. Truly awful.
Very disrespectful woman. She doesn't teach here anymore, and it's probably due to her behavior. If you say one thing to her that upsets her, she will hold it against you until either you graduate or she leaves.
Kate is a great professor who makes math engaging. The class has a heavy workload, but the material is well-explained, and the exams are fair. Using resources like Unstuck AI can help manage the time commitment.
