A good teacher that is always willing to help, but test can be hard
Good lecturer. Tests are too long and tricky-dick.
Too much info covered for the tests. Tests are too long and difficult!!
Great prof; lots of daunting work but is very flexible and willing to help.
Great prof--understanding and helpful
Very helpful; tests are very difficult even after extensive study
AH! FRUSTRATING. hard work for nothing. grades all over the place. class is mad
nice professor, but course material was a lot of repetition of ENG 261
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! Good grade impossible. Won't say what she wants.
Tremendous amount of work, hope for an A is impossible, good luck!
Hard work and no grades to show for it
terrible prof. grading is absurd...plan on getting below a C. AVOID
Unclear on expectations for written work. Knows her stuff
terrible, judgemental. you WILL fail: its her goal in life
Don't ask questions in class she gets uptight if she has to explain anything.
Devil's spawn. Guarenteed to ruin your GPA!
Flat out cruel
helpful outside of class - unclear expectations unless you meet her on your time
Very tough class but the prof is great! if you want a challenge, take her!
Great prof, great class. Learned a lot
No Comments
Never miss a due date. It will ruin your grade and she doesn't accept late work.
Course overwhelmed the smartest students...take for torture only.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She grades horribly. Nice one day, evil the next.
great professor - learned so much! so nice, take if english major!
Picks favorites..that's for sure. Tries to be fair, but it does not reflect in her grades. Assignments are several, lengthy and don't expect to get too much clarified.
No matter how hard you work, you are never quite clear on the exact expectations, and you will not get an A if you aren't a favorite!
The class was difficult, but I think she's a great proffessor!
Awesome! Awesome! Uses helpful examples and clear lectures. Be sure to study for tests and write insightful papers. You get out what you put in. Great professor!
Completely unclear on her expectations. Tells you one thing and grades based on something different. Interesting class but she can't grade to save her life :(
Extremely helpful if you ask. Very intelligent and uses examples to help class understand importance of material. Not an easy grader but she's an awesome prof!
VERY DIFFICULT grader! doesn't discuss material in detail, but CRAMS tests full of information! she is a very nice professor, but doesn't know how to handle the material so that students understand!
Very friendly prof and really intelligent. Her tests are hard, packed full of info. She grades very fairly and is always willing to give examples and help you understand.
She is very unclear on details, tests are hard, and she crams way to much into one semester. Do not take her!
I love this prof! She is so relaxed and interesting, I actually enjoyed going to my 8:30 am class! Yes, the tests are difficult, but she tells you exactly what to study and provides plenty of examples.
She is very helpful and willing to help you!! The class itself, is very difficult.
Nice lady and willing to help. Very hard tests with tons of info. never talked about in class. Tough grader and never happy with students papers.
Liked her a lot at first. She is nice. but overall...would never take her again. Busted ass and the class ruined my GPA. If taking her take c/nc!
I liked her and I really liked the class. Wasn't as hard as everyone told me it was. Keep up with the reading and assignments (put forth a strong effort) and you'll understand what's going on in class.
Yep, she CAN be nice...Don't let it fool ya! All those that report her to be frightening are soooooo correct!!!!! Yep, she messed up my awesome GPA as well... Most that I asked, use the word "witch." Sorry, but true...
I don't know why so many people don't like her. I think she is an awesome prof. I had to work hard, but it is a hard course. Go to class, read the stuff, ask when you have questions and you should do fine. It is hard to get an A but if you do all the work, you'll be okay.
Prof. Remlinger is very well educated in her field. She makes her class very interesting with videos and voice clips. I spent, in my opinion, way too much time on my fieldworks, but I learned so much from it all. Take this class if you want a challenge and want to learn!
Prof. Remlinger is a very nice lady, but her expectations for her class are ridiculous! I worked my butt of in her class and it didn't make a difference! She's VERY hard to please! If you like professors with great personality and knowledge, she's great-but not if you want your GPA ruined!
Horrible prof. Refuses to accept that students have other classes and lives in addition. Rigid, and unbending. She ruined my gpa. I suggest you memorize the syllabus word for word, because she treats it like the Gospel according to her. Her lectures were often contradictory. Get a different prof.
Super hard prof! I worked so hard in that class and I still only got a B. Ruined my GPA! Grades very and plays favorites. I think she really liked me but ??? I got one of the best grades on her exams and I got an 86 on one and an 87 on the other!
Kate is an EXTRAMLY smart prof who loves her subject. Hut She does not encourage her students to learn, nor does she pass her love into the class. As a future teacher i feel A teachers job is to help her students find subjects interesting or at least help them succed in them. Not happing with her
Nice person one on one. Very helpful in office hours. Loves sub. However in my opinion She is not a good teacher. In class she does not cater to multiple learing styles, nor does she care if the class understands what she is teaching She has her own agenda and wont stray from it. Very ridged teacher.
Run away. Hardest class I've ever taken.
A lot of work for the class, but it's worth it. Grades fairly. Very helpful if you need it.
Great Teacher
Pleasant and relaxed, Remlinger promotes a positive atmosphere of learning. Papers and presentations are not always graded objectively though. Grounds material in real life. Tests and homework are effective in evoking understanding.
Appears to be kind & caring on outside, but watch out!! Very ruthless and unprofessional underneath. Very unclear guidelines. Plays favorites. Doesn't admit to any mistakes even when backed by several students and unwilling to correct them. I had a 4.0 before I took her. There are much better profs than her out there. Take them.
She is probably my favorite prof. I've had since being at GVSU. She really has a passion for what she teaches. I thought she made class as fun as possible and knew how to bring current topics into the mix. Her sense of humor is great :) She is really strict and grades hard, but genuinely wants her students to succeed. I really appreciated it!
Professor Remlinger is a very nice and laid back professor but don't take this class if you want to slack off. I learned a lot from this class but she was very hard on us. She expected us to write very long research papers and she graded very hard. The last week of class there was a lot of work due including a final. Expect to work very hard!
Dr. Remlinger definately does not let you skate by in her class. From what I have seen in todays students though, maybe more professors should be like her. She is fair and follows the rules but that does not mean that she is not understanding. You have to give to receive and that means, work hard and don't try to pull the wool over her eyes.
Day 1, I was optimistic, but I should have ran when she advised us to take this class pass/fail. I'm doing well, B/B+ average, but that is in spite of Remlinger, not because of her. Remlinger is a sloppy teacher who acts nice, but will savage you if you don't follow the many packets of exacting procedures. She has ruined linguistics for me. AVOID!
Lots of people love Remlinger because she's sweet and laid back. I don't know which Remlinger they met, but she sounds nice compared to the one I got stuck with. One example of Remlinger's anal-retentiveness says it all: For three papers, you have to write 2 pages that is not "a summary paper or an opinion paper." I think that just leaves page #s.
This woman will singlehandedly ruin my good GPA. Avoid her unless you are an expert in her field, because that is what she expects from your papers. Loves to rub in your face how she is not available even through email on weekends or breaks because that is her "time off." So if you need help on something due on a Monday, consider yourself screwed.
Really anal. For example, her syllabus includes nearly an entire page on how to properly address her in an email so that you will sound respectful. Really knowledgable in her field, but expects you to be just as knowledgable as she is right away. If you want anything higher than a C, keep walking because you won't get it from Remlinger.
You'll definitely earn your grade in this class; tests are a bit tough, response papers really aren't that bad. She is a little difficult to get ahold of outside of class, and the class isn't super easy, but you'll learn a lot, and she can actually be entertaining. It takes a dedicated person to do well, and you probably won't get an A.
she's rigorous, but fair. i learned as much as i put into the class. some say you can't earn an a in this class, but that's not true--i got an a, and you can too--if you are dedicated, do the work, ask questions, think. like the prof says, it's not rocket science. i loved the class and will take prof remlinger again for other linguistics courses.
Boo hiss. If you are an A student, expect a low B or a C. If you are a C student, try to take it pass/fail. Remlinger made this class more difficult than it needed to be. She changes her mind throughout the course and grades subjectively. If you have take her, try to see her during office hours to figure out what she's looking for.
she's a hard prof and makes you work hard, but isn't that what college is about? she's a nice lady and will help you if you come and ask her
I did not like her, even though she was cool. You will not get the A unless you have a personal interest in the subject to go beyond what is normal for a 200 level class. She grades extremly hard on her long absurd tests, and unless you can put in 20 hrs a week studying or have a strong background knowledge of the subject, you will not do well.
The last comment has a smiley face, but the questions on rate my professor are all wrong for this one. Her grading is suspect and even though she may help alot, her expectations are way unreasonable. Way,Way,Way unreasonable and you will have to give up your life to please her. I never would take her again. Period... Find another teacher.
If you want to understand the mathematics of English, Dr. Remlinger is the best!
I truely enjoyed Remlinger's class. She is tough, but if you attend class, and do the homework you will be fine. She is one of the best professors I have had at GVSU.
Extremely hard class, but Prof Remlinger is VERY fair and passionate about her subjects. Tells you up front that it takes work to pass, and it does. Do the homework, read the text, put forth an honest effort, and you'll do fine. Super helpful outside of class and willing to work with you however you need it. Easily one of my favorite classes, ever.
The class itself is really hard, but Remlinger is very fair. You'll have to do a lot of work in the class if you want to get a good great and you'll have to do an insane amount of work for an A but you'll learn a lot. Tests are hard, papers are graded hard as well.
Although she is a nice lady, her expectations are nuts. It does not matter how many hours a week you put into this class, It is near impossible to get an A. All tests and quizzes are fill in the blank, and are insanely particular. There will always be something wrong with your answer, and partial points will be deducted. Trust me, RUN!
Dr. Remlinger is honestly the WORST professor I have ever had throughout my 4 years of college!!! She is Bias in every way possible!! When you ask her a question she tells you to look it up!! You will work very hard and not gain Anything from all your work because of how she grades! You honestly feel like she is out to get you!! TRUST ME RUN FAST

She comes across scary, but is actually pretty nice and has a sense of humor. The class is hard, but if you ask for help, she'll guide you to the right answer so you actually learn. Definitely go to office hours.
To say that this professor is difficult is an understatement. This professor is ridiculous. I spent HOURS preparing for this class each week, and I still didn't do good. She grades very unfairly. On the first paper, she gave me positive comments and rated each individual requirement in a good way, but she still gave me a "D"! Impossible to please!
I did not have her for a prof (yet) but she is my advisor and even after multiple attempts to set up an advising session, and plenty of emails soliciting advice she has been ZERO help. She basically says "I don't know, look it up" to any question I have. AWFUL.
Remlinger is nice, and very intelligent. I have had 4 classes with her, and I feel like she knows her stuff. That being said, the homework load is out of this world ridiculous. She will give more homework in 1 day than 4 other classes give in one week. She thinks her class is the only one you're taking, so she assigns 3-5 hours of homework/ day.
Professor Remlinger expects a lot from her students, so don't expect class with her to be easy. That said, she has a good sense of humor and I enjoyed class discussions. Go to her office hours if you have any doubts, she is happy to help (but have specific questions ready when you go). I learned a lot from her, and I would take her again for sure.
I adore professor Remlinger. As with any of her classes, you will work, and you will have a large amount of work. But you will also learn SO much. She's happy to help students in her office hours, and is more than willing to give extra assistance to students who are having difficulty with assignments. I highly recommend her!
This is a really neat class to take if you have an interest in history or anthropology. Professor Remlinger is definitely a difficult professor, but the sheer amount of information you will acquire makes the class well worth it. She's happy to help at office hours, so stop by and talk if you're having an issue with an assignment! She's wonderful.
This class is called "The English Version of Organic Chem" for a reason. It's insanely difficult, and there is a phenomenal amount of information packed into one semester. You will work hard, but you will get out of it what you put in. Professor Remlinger is fantastic, and is more than happy to help outside of class, as long as you ask! :)
This class ruined media for me, haha. It's definitely an eye-opening look at the way gender stereotypes are performed. I recommend this class if you have an interest in Linguistics OR WGS, and Professor Remlinger is wonderful! I've absolutely adored this class. The amount of work I put in is reflected in the grades you receive, so work hard!
Professor Remlinger is awesome! I can understand why people would complain about the homework load, though, it can be a bit much at times. But you learn so much in her classes, and she's such a nice person that it's hard to not love the classes. This was a really cool look at the different ways that racism and power relationships are constructed.
Very VERY strict. Doesn't like people questioning her or her beliefs, though she teaches in a way that is difficult to understand and requires you to go 'huh?' Expects everyone to agree. Lots of homework, problems from the textbook every night, and projects that are time consuming and difficult. EXPECT TO FAIL! SWITCH OUT NOW!
I was told that English 261 was the "GPA Buster" so I worked very hard in this class. The only thing tougher than the course is professor remlinger. Her exam study guides are mostly irrelevant to the actual exam. She is quite cold and you can tell she just doesn't care about the students or their grades. Absolutely try to find another professor.
I've had some difficult professors but Remlinger tops them all. By far the worst professor I have ever had. You can tell she is knowledgeable but refuses to answer even the simplest of questions. The hw load is absolutely drowning. This class was my number one priority and I still didn't do well. She has impossible standards.FIND ANOTHER PROF DANGER
This was a good class but it was almost impossible to do. If you aren't an english major or minor, expect to do poorly. It's A LOT of work and she'll say your paper was good but give you a D on it for no apparent reason. She's nice, but way too tough for a theme course.
She is such a horrible prof. She is way too demanding. I've spend over 14 hours on what could easily be classified as busy work and it's only week 4. And whenever you talk to her about problems or questions she gets really defensive and is "west michigan nice." I've heard other linguistics profs aren't much better, but seriously stay away.
Very nice lady I can tell she knows her stuff but the class is terrible. Hours are spent on homework assignments. Most of them have been group assignments that you have a week to complete and sometimes they overlap. Will ask what the class needs help with and not cover that class period. Very disappointed. The class is heavy on linguistics.
She is a nice lady. That being said, stay away from her class. We read the book. She doesn't clarify what was read even though she admits the book is confusing. She just goes along the book. Go into the class expecting to get a C or worse. She is a tough grader and doesn't offer a chance for improvement on topics we are learning.
Extremely difficult. She does not teach. She expects students to learn from each other and from their own reading. If I knew what the class was about, I wouldn't take it. Also, I'm not paying $550 a credit hour to be taught by students who know even less than I do!! She is not approachable at all.
Okay, I just read a bunch of the recent reviews of her. They're all pretty much spot on. If you absolutely have to take this class, do WHATEVER POSSIBLE to get out of taking it with her. She doesn't know how to teach, she's often unclear on requirements, she's strict, she's a hard grader. Hands down the worst prof I've ever had (I'm a junior).
Worst prof I've ever had. Her grading policy is top-heavy on tests (only 4) and the tests are super hard. Doesn't teach the material well enough to do well on tests. Avg test grade was always 70% or lower. She's not very understanding/nice when it comes to absences either, girl had to come even tho she had a death in the family.
Terrible professor. Worst I've had by far. Not helpful, approachable, or clear. When questions are asked she tells you to ask your group; despite me paying her to teach me. She seems to use groups as a way to get out of extra work for herself. She also changes assignment due dates because she doesn't have the material prepared.
Do not take this professor. If you have her get out while you still can. Tons of homework that does not increase your knowledge on the subject. In this class you pay to teach yourself.
Horrible. Will never take another class with her again. However, it is noticeable that she will grade easier on you if she likes you. So get on her good side, she is a very biased grader.
Assignments are tough. This was an undergrad class but it felt like graduate level. The guideline and rubric for assignment don't always align.
I took this class already having experience with the subject matter, but Remlinger definitely has very high expectations and I can see why people talk about how difficult she is. However, I really cannot see all the accusations of not caring about students or being willing to help. She was always very warm and more than open to provide assistance.
I would never take another class with her again. Hardest grader ever. Pretty much no matter what you do, you're going to receive a B-. She knows her stuff but she is too hard on the students and seems a little biased. If you do not participate, she does not like you. Have to be on her good side if you want a good grade. I would get out of her class
Only Professor who teaches Sociolinguistics. If you must take the class, prepare for hell. She is the hardest grader you will ever have, not a single person in my class has gotten an A even once. She doesn't care enough to notice her students struggling. DO NOT TAKE HER. I'm serious, just don't. Worst prof ever.
Well, don't sign up for one of her classes if you're not ready to work. It's common for me to spend at least 4 hours on one of her homework assignments. That said, she explains material really well. Challenges you enough to actually learn. Engaging. High expectations. Good sense of humor. Be an active participant in class or she'll crack down.
She is a wonderful teacher, knows her material and presents it very well in class. However, her teaching in class is not a good reflection of the assignments that are required. The worksheets she gives are EXTREMELY difficult and she is a TOUGH grader. If you don't keep up on your readings, this class is very hard! But, no tests is a plus!
Prof Remlinger is very knowledgeable in her field of work. However, I would not recommend this class to anyone who struggles with writing analytical papers on the daily. She's tough on her students, but when you hit the jack-pot, she likes you all the more. It's a rigorous course but I learned a hell of a lot because of it.
She's a great person, and very, very smart. I really like her as a person, and most of the times as a teacher. But she's a VERY tough grader, and expects a lot out of you even though she teaches hard material. I would take her again, but just be careful and make sure you put in a lot of effort to succeed because you'll need it.
Dr. Remlinger is an enjoyable person, but her teaching style is to rush through the content too fast within a semester. Half your grade is on the multiple papers and daily homework assignments. Then there are 4 exams total and they are TOUGH! Be prepared to teach yourself the content, because its not all taught in class.
Too many of the concepts felt self-taught. The material feels rushed through in class and it not explained well. There is also multiple homework assignments due EVERY class period. She also said that we should plan on spending at least 6 hours per week on this class outside of class time.
For the love of your GPA, don't take this class. She expects her students to read massive amounts of homework , and basically teach themselves to do everything related to the class. Class time is spent breezing through some, not all, concepts in the class. This semester is almost over and I'm still not sure what I actually I learned from her.
Remlinger was the hardest grader I've ever had. She was much too critical and didn't spend the time needed to teach the content. She assigns a lot of homework and grades it just as hard as a test. She's a sweet lady but in my opinion, is too smart for her own good. She didn't know how to "dumb down" questions to be understood at all. nice lady tho.
High quality of instruction; really tough grading. Getting an A requires having unparalleled time commitment and dedication to the course, as well as raw ability and luck. Best recommendation is for students very interested in the subject to go ahead and take her. Those filling requirements should avoid. Strong effort alone does NOT guarantee an A.
A very nice person outside of the classroom and during office hours, She was always willing to help. However, lack of clarity in expectations/instructions for assignments left me, along with half the class confused on what she wanted us to do. She is definitely a really difficult prof. If you can avoid taking her, do it. I would not take her again.
This class is all massive amounts of busy work on things you had to teach yourself. Most classes were her giving random facts from her knowledge base that were only mildly related to the required content or going over the homework. Unrealistic expectations for most taking the class.
Very boring class and subject, we take 2 minutes before every class as down time right before she hits you with phonetics and phonology, one of the most complicated subjects to learn at GV. Grades every assignment as if its a final exam. Extremely picky about how to format the heading of your assignment, not just essays, literally assignment.
Dr. Remlinger is a hard grader, that cannot be said enough, but as someone who has had her for 2+ years, she has changed for the better. She listens to her students and offers plenty of help outside of class. She is willing to work with students who meet with her and are active in class.
Her class was very content heavy and she grades way too harshly. She is a nice person but the class is very difficult.
I had 10 minutes to get from my other class to hers, but it was a mile away, literally. I never got to her class in under 12-13. so I asked for some leeway since it counted for points and she sent me the equivalent of a too bad, so sad email. She still docked my grade by half every day. Literally acts like its junior high. Dont take her ever.
