The Best!
very cool! :)
awesomely brilliant!
the power house...
Nice, but the materials are pretty difficult n one of her TA is horrible
EXCELLENT TEACHER! she has the best lectures and they are interesting!
extremely motivating
she is SO charismatic and great! I totally see her as an actress
Enjoyable lectures!
thorough understanding of the material; deep analysis of all literaure.
Unbelievable, if anyone can capture your interest in Shakespear it's her!
captivating, thorough understanding of the material and teaches with such passio
she's amazing, no one can compare
extremely interesting and captivating; made me believe in english again!
Great lectures and she is a wonderful prof
She made me love Shakespeare!
Oh my God one of the best English profs EVER!!! She made boring materials interesting! She respects what you have to say in class / in your essays.
AMAZING!!! If you have the chance, get this Prof.
Great, wonderful, inspirational teacher, the absolute best you could ever have for arts one!!
She's brilliant, extremely interesting, and compassionate toward her students because she really cares about them as people.
excellent prof, actually know what she's talking about. there is so much information to be absorbed in a lecture but the stuff really helps you out on the exams or essays. really interesting to listen to. recommend to everyone!
Amazing prof. actually made me enjoy coming into english and reading novels... the topics she covers are very interesting.
My advice to UBC Administraton: Clone this woman!!
Sirluck is the most passionate and inspirational prof in our department - she's spiritually charged and is a serious social-radical. Most helpful, flexible and entertaining prof I've ever had. Very generous with the A's as well.
She is the most amazing women! She is so supportive and really helpful. It also helps that she loves what she does!
She is personable, passionate and approachable. Very supportive, in fact almost too supportive and generous with marks. She did push the class to achieve. It is so easy to get an A that there is no insentive to put in all the extra effort.
I don't know why so many glowing reviews. I didn't like her at all. Found her to be patronizing and totally unhelpful. Hated her class and would never recommend her even though the marks were pretty easy to come by
She's quite intelligent, I haven't seen her unable to give a good answer to a question. She sometimes lectures quickly, impossible to keep up with lots of good info. Marks: if you want to work hard and motivate yourself she will push you. Recommended.
i didn't think it possible that i would enjoy studying shakespeare. this woman made it easy to see the patterns that are there in the writing. A+ to her ...

Her lectures are very useful and interesting.
The most supportive caring prof. Very fair re:marks and extensions. She is very intelligent but can be intimidating. If you take her class just know that she's just inspired, not condescending. And you're not the only one in class who's lost.
An interesting prof. Lectures were alright. She encourages participation, even in big classes. Really knows her stuff though. Very considerate of students' opinions and ideas. Overall a good prof.

The absolute best prof I have had at UBC as of yet. Incredibly inspirational and full of passion--Shakespeare will come alive. Very approachable and supportive outside of class. Take this course!!
Passionate about teaching stories.
She's intelligent and is an interesting lecture who keeps her students engaged. Needs a makeover but as an awesome personality. The TA (Katryna Scott) was horrible though, she should be teaching kindergarden!
The most amazingly intelligent person I have ever met. She is absolutely incredible. Dr. Sirluck has an energy and interest in the work that is contagious and she truly cares about her students. She will inspire you. If you love English she is the type of professor you always hoped you'd have.
There is something almost magical about her. She bends over backwards to help students. She never belittles anybody for their opinion and encourages you to share your thoughts. She talks very fast but lectures are really interesting. An amazing woman.
definitely one of the most eye-opening courses i've taken at university. professor sirluck's insight into shakespeare and her lectures were always interesting and inspiring. her marking is rather easy, if you know what she wants, and the selection of readings were well chosen and thought-provoking.
one of the BEST teachers I've ever had. Had her for 110 and took 348 because of her (and im in sciences!) A relitively easy marker, open to helping you with your papers before the due date and her lectures were alway interesting and full of energy. Creative, passionate and ya..I think she's hot :D
WAS THE MOST EXCITING EVENT IN MY SHORT ACADEMIC LIFE IN THE UNIVERSITY ATTEMPTING TO COMPLETE A SCIENCE DEGREE. PASSIONATE AND INTELLIGENT ABOUT HER INTERESTS.
passionate, kind, knowledgable. fairly easy marker but no pushover. fantastically informative in response to just about any question, and comes up with dynamic and useful commentary in class discussions. highly recommended.
Dr. Sirluck is the prof who teaches the class that every English student dreams of taking. Her classes are inspiring, because she is a person who makes you want to raise your expectations of yourself. She is amazingly intelligent, yet always strives to raise her students' level of achievement.
I love her! So passionate and SO smart. Four years of university, and Dr. Sirluck is by far the best instructor I've ever had. Her lectures are stimulating, and her arguments make a lot of sense. Very friendly, though she appears intimidating at first.
Good lord, there is nothing I can say that will convey the power this woman wields over her students. She is incommunicable. Not only has she managed to interest me in every piece of literature we have studied, but she has actually given me lasting tools for literary analysis. I love this woman.
what a waste of a term!!!.she talked down to the class all term. apparently many think she is brilliant-and she very well may be- but I was not impressed. oversimplified analysis. was more like a freshman high school english class than a uni one. BRUTAL.try to avoid.ENG 120 is much better!
One of the best courses offered at UBC. She's open to different opinions, gives a unique perspective on Shakespearean text and is one of the most compassionate professors in the English Department. She notices when something's wrong and that meant a lot to me when I was her student.
This was by far my favourite class this semester. Dr. Sirluck is brilliant and she has a genuine interest in what students have to say. I would highly recommend her to anyone with an interest in the subject.
Absolutely wonderful. My favorite prof, by far
She is very understanding person. Likes to generate provocative discussion about Shakespeare. Not a dull moment in her class.
responsible prof that i have nvr seen. she is willing to help and she explains Shakespeare in details.
I once wrote a sonnet about Kate Sirluck, and I don't often write sonnets.
keeps class interesting
The woman needs no more praise; however, I will give it anyway :-) A refreshing breath of fresh air in a sea of stale interpretations of Shakespeare. Brings the texts and her students to life in a way that is seldom experienced at this university. If you should be so lucky to get a seat in her class, consider yourself blessed!

AMAZING! Best professor I have ever had. By far the most interesting and engaging and rich lectures I have ever experienced. Great marker, very supportive and kind, and just all around super!
Still one of my faves. Lectures are interesting and exciting without the least hint of being esoteric or inflated. Generous but not indiscriminate in marking; she reads your work very closely and responds with detailed critcism. Above all kind, fun, and passionate.
awesome prof! one of the best i've had so far. she gives excellent analysis of shakespeare and other lit that i actually enjoyed writing the essay assignments. she makes it really easy for you to understand the lit. the student TA's do the marking however, so make sure you get a good one...some are brutally hard markers...
I was in the honors eng. program back in 2002-3, and this woman is the best professor I have ever had! She is such a wonderful, inspirational teacher and I would jump at the chance to be back at UBC studying with her.
A truely inspiring prof. She's really passionate about what she's doing and it shows. I've learnt so much in this class.
A brillant and engaging prof! She is obviously very interested in the material as well as very open to student's opinions. Quite simply, she forces you to think.
The NICEST and most accomodating professor I will likely ever had.
Quite honestly, this woman is one of the best teachers UBC has. To learn from Dr. Sirluck is a privilege and a pleasure--she is one of the very few instructors with a truly open mind. Her lectures are truly things of rhetorical beauty. She is inspiring and extremely supportive. I have enjoyed my year with her like no other before.

Interested in her subject, insanely intelligent. Wastes a lot of time with absurd revisionist theories and alternative ideas - no traditional thought in her mind. Teaches radical psychoanalyst, feminist, marxist theories. Doesn't care at ALL about author's intent. Loves controversial topics. Bashes European culture a lot.
Absolutely fantastic prof!! The most engaging and brilliant prof I have ever encountered at UBC. Her lectures are engrossing, moving and compelling. I want to major in English because of her. She is also dedicated and very very kind. She cares deeply about her job and her students. An all around remarkable person. Take her class you'll learn a lot!
She is intelligent, but lectures are all over the place. She goes from concept to concept, talking about each concept for maybe a few mins, never fully explaining the full scope of it. I looked over my notes and found them to be a waste. Goes through first few chapters/acts slowly, then rushes through the rest of the text. Marks pretty easily.
Very passionate about English!Lectures are only dull if you don't keep up with the readings. Very easy marker. Sweetest & most accomodating prof you will ever meet. Encourages discussion and is not intimidating. Would DEFINITELY take another course with her. Final is non-cumulative = great! Attendendance not mandatory (no participation marks)
The most compelling speaker I have ever heard. She is a true poet - she speaks with conviction, passion, exceptional clarity and intelligence. She's aware of her biases and tries not to impose them. She's kind, deeply thoughtful, committed and highly relevant. She even gave us her HOME number! An exquisite woman, and truly elevated academic.
I was cruising the entries for my old profs and was delighted to see that Kate Sirluck still gets the highest plaudits from her students. I took first-year English from her (gulp) 25 years ago. She inspired me to (so far) a lifetime appreciation of great English literature. I'm no English scholar by any means, but her teaching enriched my life.
I, too, took Dr. Sirluck's classes decades ago. She and Kieran Kealy were the best professors that I ever had--positively inspirational. Given that I went on to do a PhD at a top US school and so have YEARS of education--this is saying something.
She shows much enthusiasm for literature. It is true sometimes she's all over the place but I was impressed by her analysis b/c it was so different from others. Adequately helpful. Still the comments here overrate her a lot. Certainly not one of the smartest/inspirational profs I've seen. If you aim at B range you'll find this course easy.
A lot of the reviews say that she is an easy marker, I don't know cause the class is large so the TA's mark it. MAKE SURE TO TAKE A SMALLER CLASS so you can take advantage of her easy marking. She really opens your eyes about the text and encourages discussion and and debating a lot (good thing). Rushes things cause too much to talk about (bad).
Nothing new to add. She made what I anticipated to be my most boring class the most exciting. She's very charitable and encouraging in class discussions. Inspiring, articulate, and concerned for all her students.
Kathryn Sirluck is extremely intelligent, witty, and exudes joy. She seems to savor both literature and the sharing of it with her students. Each class left me buzzing with new avenues of thought about what we had read. I will take ANY course that Sirluck teaches, and I pity those who do not have the chance to study under her.
Absolutely loved her class. She was always enthusiastic, obviously loved the course material, and made the drier readings fascinating. One of the best English Lit. professors I've ever had :)
Un-bel-iev-a-ble. Highly recommend the seminar class if available.
Im taking her 2nd yr honours lecture. Wow. I think everyone in this class is gonna take her shakespeare course next year. If you want good literary criticism and don't wanna synthesize from piles of commentaries then take her classes! and she is very kind too!
If you are interested in literary criticism and love the thought of an environment where your ideas will be meaningfully discussed, take this class. Professor Sirluck is intensely thoughtful and passionate, capable of inspiring similar attitudes among her students toward the literature being discussed. She is brilliant and English 348 is amazing.
Professor Sirluck is the best professor I have had in university. Shakespeare's brilliance is a rumor that I didn't truly understand until this class. Both Sirluck and Shakespeare are so intelligent and passionate, and Sirluck exudes critical, scholarly answers but will be delighted with your own thoughts. If I recommend any course, THIS IS IT.
Dr. Sirluck is the greatest professor I've ever beheld. She is an impassioned master of her field, and by attending her class you will feel enlightened! She is highly animated, friendly, jocose, and intelligent. I seriously think she is part of some coven or the O.T.O, I can't explain her genius except through the use of some esoteric ritual magic
Brilliance in its most articulate form. Dr. Sirluck is a rare gem; a genius excited by the imaginations of her students.
The below comments are absolutely correct. I took her class thinking that there is no way she could live up to hype and not only did she live up to it - she exceed it by far. A brilliant, kind, passionate professor. Take her class and you will be a better person.
I'm not arguing that Dr. Sirluck may be brilliant, but as a professor I found her methods lacking. There was very little structure and most of the classes revolved around personal interpretations. We did not get a solid grounding in literary eras or historical context as in other English classes. Nice person, easy marker, poor educator.
Sirluck is truly NOT AS AMAZING as she's made out to be here. She's quite insensitive, even outrightly spurning students' questions in class. Even in office hours, she is very curt and impatient. Her lectures aren't organized or structured and are often rushed in the end. Her only redeeming quality is that she gives out As like crazy.
This is another brilliant Renaissance course with her. Unfortunately, her tragedies (mostly in ENGL 348; we only had Dr. Faustus as the real tragedy in this course) are way better than her comedies. Still, her ability to do meta-narrative criticism and also close reading is just unparalleled. Don't waste you time with other Ren profs--just take her
Dr. Sirluck is an incredible expert on Shakespeare. As a lecturer, her in-depth explorations were fascinating. However, it was difficult on exams to go BEYOND all of her involved ideas. It made for a bit of a struggle at times, but overall it was an enjoyable course.
This was the best English class I have taken at UBC. I slacked off a bit because she marked so easily, and I regret not being a better student and getting more out of the experience. I am still astounded that she knew us all by our last names. Top notch. Take her class. You won't regret it!
She is amazing. Consider yourself lucky if you get into her class.
Was wary after the first few classes as she seemed very opinionated, but quickly changed my mind! Extremely passionate about Shakespeare but is willing to accept any view or opinion as long as you have a solid argument for it. Despite critical feedback on assignments, she marks fairly well depending on the strength of your argument. Great prof!
She reminds me of Kate Bush—she is the Kate Bush of the English Department. Lovely. Wonderful. Somewhat eerie.
She's a fair marker and I loved her classes. She made Shakespeare fun and lectures were very detailed. You'll learn a lot
Prof Sirluck is absolutely in LOVE with Shakespeare, and her passion is contagious! Really encourages participation, had mini-performance groups and marks fairly based on the clarity and strength of your argument, rather than whether she agrees with it or not. She's the kind of teacher you dream of having!!
Lectures flow organically and are highly interesting and engaging. She is brilliant, witty, and has an amazing grip on the content, but is not intimidating. Rather she is inspiring and fosters a wonderful creative environment. Easy marker too, which is so rare for a prof this good! Being in her class is a privilege, I can't wait to take more.
Dr. Sirluck was fantastic-- interesting lectures with lots of discussion, really made an effort to make everything interesting. She is a very fair marker and gives great feedback. If you put in the extra work, it does not go unnoticed! She's absolutely fabulous.
Her lectures are quite informative, but I really don't understand what all the hype is about. There are many English profs at UBC who are as equally, if not more, insightful and interesting. I personally found her to be quite intimidating and condescending during office hours as well.
Prof. Sirluck is an amazing lecturer! I felt like I left every class having learned a lot (which can be pretty rare with a lot of English profs). Classes are always interesting and engaging and you can tell she's really passionate about the material. Very fair marker. Definitely take her class if you get the chance.
Professor Sirluck is the best professor of all time... aside from maybe one or two others. Definitely the most charismatic and enthusiastic.
Sirluck is without a doubt one of the best profs i've ever had. Coming into the class, I was worried it would be boring (literature up to the 18th century) but Sirluck made each reading and lecture super interesting! She allowed student discussion to bring up points she might not agree with, but still treated the opinions as valuable.
Dr. Sirluck renewed my passion for my degree. Her intelligence and knowledge about Shakespeare was truly inspirational. I learned so much in every lecture and she was genuinely respectful of students, wanted to help you learn and succeed, and was born to be a teacher. Her sense of humour made every class enjoyable. The best prof I've ever had.
Super fun to listen to. Makes the texts come alive with her theatrical, dramatic readings and always engages students. She does make a ton of references that you will not get if you don't do the readings, but will undoubtedly accept any views that you have as long as you back them up. Very encouraging of independent thought, and quite funny.
Top five if not the top of all English profs throughout my years at UBC. Highly recommend. Above all, shes fair, quick with good advice, funny and brilliant!
Really, really good lecturer. I've never really been into classical literature before, but I thoroughly enjoyed going to her classes.
These reviews are the reason I enrolled in English 220, I was looking for something along those lines for an elective and couldn't miss the chance. Let me tell you, it's all true. Dr. Sirluck is simply the best. The course changed the way I relate to the world by encouraging me to think about it through the eyes of literature and history. Take it!
Honestly, one of the best professors I've had to date. I've never been overly interested in classical literature before, but she took texts that bored me to death when I'd been forced to study them before and lit them on fire. She's great.
Sirluck is incredible, not least because she's able to make 17th century lit a fascinating subject; her lectures are downright masterworks of eloquence, though if you don't pay attention you will lose the plot; the class average was quite high, so she is not too tough a marker, or rather she is generous and open-minded, unlike many profs out there
Dr Sirluck is so engaging and inspiring! She chooses great literary works to study, shares with us her reading of the work, and encourages everyone to share their own interpretation, accepting all of them despite how vastly different they may be. She's very critical but leaves lots of good feedback, and prompts us to think further in discussions.
Katherine Sirluck is amazing. She sincerely cares for the wellbeing and improvement of every students' work, strives for the best way to be helpful to her students, and writes the best constructive feedback that students can actually improve from. She is by far the most insightful professor I have ever taken a class in. I learned so much from her.
I trusted all those good reviews but I felt the exact opposite...
I found this professor unengaging. We were all disappointed her class didn't live up to the reviews. Most of her points about Shakespeare were wrong, and she often misreads the text in order to come up with points. She wanted to make great ones, but I am sure she just mistaught it.
dr sirluck's lectures are absolute MASTERCLASSES. she is incredibly well spoken, cares so much for her students, and is very easy to follow in class. grades quite generously and provides heaps of feedback. easily one of the best professors I've had at ubc.
Professor Sirluck is awesome. Few of my other english profs have had the profound joy that she brings to a classroom. Her lectures are engaging and informative. I was in the same section as the reviewer two comments down, and can guarantee that "we" did not have the same experience. I bet they didn't do the readings.
