I despised going to lecture on Monday to see this lady speak. I felt like she was trying to be funny, but she wasn't at all. My TA was awesome and wanted us to enjoy class. Denker did not, she doesn't care about the students like most other professors do.
I hated Monday lectures with her. The labs and grad students were much better but speech grading was hell. You go over 30 seconds minus 10, under 30 seconds minus 10, you breath minus 10.
Class was boring. She gives you the notes ahead of time so all you have to do is follow along. The tests are a little hard, and the notes she gives you is pointless. Just read the book for test and show up to class you will be fine.
She did give you study guides, but questions from the guides and from lecture were mostly not on the tests. Test and how they were worded was very confusing! I did have a good grad student for speech class, he was awesome, and make this class bearable. Even though I didn't do well on the tests, I did well with my speaches and got an A.
Terrible. Just plain terrible. She never gave valuable information in lecture. Most of her comments were completely worthless. Grad students were great. They should teach the class instead of Denker, at least they could speak coherently.
Ironically, for being in a speech class she is a horrible speaker. Her "lectures" have no relevance to anything whatsoever, and this is the only class I did not once pay any attention whatsoever in, and got an A without the slightest effort. Her students in the smaller lectures all had more skill at teaching than she could have hoped for.
Dr. Denker is a hard worker and you can really tell she is trying to do her best -- I appreciate that she tries her best to make the class interesting. Some of the complainers below need to cut her a break -- she's dealing with 500 students and in my opinion she does it well. Thank you Dr. Denker for being a good prof.
Everyone is right. This prof tries to be funny, is not. Does not lecture on anything important. Gives a study guide that is worthless, the tests are hard, and very confusing. The only reason to go to lecture is for attendance points.
She tries, you can tell she does. But the lectures are boring, and the study guides really had not much to do with the actual tests. Also, she's trying to get responses out of a 600 person lecture hall at 9 AM. No one wants to talk, obviously. It's whatever, as long as you attend to get lecture points and do well on your speeches, it's an easy A
Not good. You would think a speech instructor could give speeches, but I guess not. She reads off the powerpoint and drinks mountain dew. I hear iclickers are going to be required, so you'll have to attend.
I don't know why she has such a bad rating. She's not terribly exciting, but she's not a bad professor. Just attend class and that's essentially all you need to do. Pretty neutral. Not great, not bad.
A little boring sometimes, but a good teacher. It's very easy to get a good grade in her class.
I really disliked her lecture. She would go on and on on things that weren't needed for the final. The midterm and final are completely ridiculous. You could read the textbooks and take great notes, but you still have no clue what is on these tests. She hands out study guides, but they don't do anything to help you..
The lecture attendance is almost mandatory with iClicker questions which prove your attendance, in which you have 5 points per lecture. Everybody has to take this class, so you're essentially stuck. Her powerpoints had many typos, and she was not a good public speaker. My lab class teacher was better.
Everyone seems to think the class is hard. Well, if you pay attention and show up you'll be OK. It must be hard dealing with such huge classes. The smaller lab sections are more fun. You have to take your speeches seriously, read the book, and show up to class and you'll get a good grade.
This class is required, but it's not easy. You have to show up, and you have to work on your lab assignments. I did well on the exams, but then again, I test well. Some people struggle with them. Make sure you show up, bring your iClicker, and put in some effort, and you'll do well.
This class is horribly boring, but required. Every class requires attendance, as the iClickers are used constantly. As for notes...unimportant. This class is pretty easy as far as speeches and tests, just DON'T get behind. Other than that, go to the once-a-week class and click some answers and you should be golden.
This class was not one I was looking forward too, and the lecture was a very small portion of the class as a whole.
Dr. Denker is a horrible teacher. Nothing she goes over in lecture is on the exams. Absolutely useless lectures, but they're mandatory.
Denker is fairly enthusiastic, and a good speaker, but she loves to make jokes about people who vote D or E on iclicker questions when there are only answers A-C. Strangely enough, the things in lecture aren't on the tests very often, which is annoying. This class is neither good nor bad. It's just okay,
She was great!
She is a really easy teacher.
Lectures are pointless. But attendance is mandatory. Her test are hard!
I feel like the lecture class is a little worthless and it is just a lot of unnecessary repetitive topics we could just learn in lab
Took the class only because it was mandatory. Very boring lecture, spent too much time joking around and referring to unrelated topics. Attendance is based solely on I-Clicker usage. Class content rarely appeared on the impossibly hard mid-terms and finals. As long as she is at BSU, you'll most likely have her.
You'll only see her an hour a week, most of your learning will be done with a Graduate Assistant
Hilarious professor! Super nice and friendly. Lectures are pretty much pointless, as you learn a majority of items and do a majority of work in your small sections. Pretty good class overall!
Always joking, sometimes funny, but mostly boring. Lecture and lab are both cake, be sure to do the study guide for the midterm and final
Easy class! Lectures kind of pointless and not really helpful.
Lectures were boring though she tried to fill it with pop culture references so she could relate to our generation...didn't really help. I wish I could have taken the lecture with a different professor, but unfortunately that is impossible. Lectures did not contain material relevant to the mid-term or the final.
This is a large lecture class, with 400-500 students. She is entertaining and always has multiple choice questions (for attendance mainly) for participation, for fun. Shows funny videos, etc.
Where to start... only show up for iclicker points. Don't even have to get the answers right, just participate. Sit on my laptop the whole time while she stands on the stage and tries too hard. Tests aren't too difficult but can be confusing. She tries to be funny which can be relatable but not always. Have to take her but the world won't end.
The lectures aren't helpful, except for to write down the acronyms she presents, but you need to go because the attendance is counted by iclicker use. She usually runs way over time in class. Don't sit in the front and you wont have to participate. The study guides say exactly what will be on the midterm and final.
Her lectures are well structured, but not helpful. She fills them with examples that don't help. She tries to be funny and sometimes is but don't expect to learn anything new. The textbook is filled with common sense facts that are not entirely true in all cases. In other words, the class is done in layman terms for better or worse.
Not the best professor I've had. She doesn't clarify things you need to know but spends a lot of time in class telling stories or showing funny videos that are loosely related to the material. Nice lady with a big heart but I wouldn't recommend her class.
Lectures are easy to follow but filled with excessive acronyms and useless examples. Boring (but required) class.
Terrible midterm and final! Even if you go through and highlight and memorize the information you somehow end up with a terrible grade on them. Lectures are easy but annoying and iclicker is used for attendance every week.
Not personally attentive with students, but that what your lab grad assistants are for. Lectures are extremely pointless, I missed 8 & ended with a B in the class.
Midterm and final are easy if you study. Extremely boring lecture and small groups are annoying.
This class is very easy if y just attend, use your iClicker, and do the assignments (which are pretty easy.)
Great Professor. She keeps it interesting which is hard to do.
So boring but everyone has to take her. Try to get Andrew Young as your small class instructor.
Everyone has to have her but Sarah on way for small lecture is the best!!!!!
Dr. Denker is one of the best professors I have had at Ball Sate. It is unfair to rate her based on the Comm 210 course that everyone has to take. When you take a course with her that is not for entry level freshman it becomes apparent just how interesting and helpful she truly is.
Large Lecture is pretty pointless. Just go to get the points. The class is easy depending on what small section instructor you get. Miss Danielle Kelly is excellent! Dr. Denker has many students, but she still manages to email back in a timely manner. Her large lecture is also fairly interesting.
was not as easy as it should have been. your small group instructor is what really is important here. you dont want one that sucks like mine did
Dr. Denker is really nice, and professional. While Large Lecture wasn't super important it definitely helped out for the finals/exams, and the attendance points were an easy way to boost your grade. Denker knows her stuff, and does her best to keep everyone interested (She even rapped an eminem song one day)
This is one of the most demeaning courses that non-traditional students can take in my mind. Did not listen to course feedback given in middle of semester survey. Workload is unwarranted for a 3 credit hour course and there were numerous issues with getting topics approved for speeches. This is the worst course I have taken at Ball State.
First the large lecture for this class is the worst class I have ever taken. Just Denker's voice is terrible. She introduces her topic for about 25 of the 50 minute lecture. She is a terrible professor. She lectures to 1200 kids so she could care less about you or your grades. You have to take this class, so you just have to suck it up.
Its hard to really rate her because you did most of your work with your small group instructor. I only talked to her in person once, and she seemed fairly helpful. She wasn't always clear when she talked to the class though.
Really nice and easy to follow. Class is easy way to boost grades so show up for ICLICKER points. She likes to joke a lot to get 500 students interested. I took her 1:00p.m lecture so I was okay and not too tired. She rapped Eminem during a lesson, too. I'd recommend her. I had Stevie for small lecture he's AWESOME!
Denker is very nice. She portrays her ideas well. Come to class everyday. You get points for attendance. Midterm and final aren't hard, but you HAVE to know the material. Bring your iClicker! Large lecture could be more useful. Your small discussion teacher is more important. As long as you study and know material, this class is easy to pass.
Very boring lecture with about 500 people. If you just go to a few of the lecture and then go to the lab, which is essentially the actual class, you'll get a good grade.
I would say avoid taking her class at all cost, but sadly, her class is required. Lectures are insanely boring and almost useless. Material made almost no sense whatsoever, and in fact only complicated things when I was preparing my speeches. Random assignments will come your way that you are unprepared for.
There are two parts to the class. Denker’s part is the lecture which can be boring and pointless. All you have to do is look at the study guide before the test to get a good grade. Most of the points come from the part of the class she doesn’t teach.
She provides partial notes on blackboard and powerpoint notes in class. She says she's available for help in her office, but it'd probably be more efficient to get help from your small group instructor since the classes are so big. She's pretty funny. She provides a study guide for the tests, which aren't too hard.
Large lecture is extremely boring and pointless. I didn't take a single note or open the book once (still required to buy). To succeed: show up every day for iClicker points (which you get points for even if your answers are wrong) and get on quizlet, look up comm210 and study the flashcards and you'll get A's on the midterm and final.
I had her big lecture and she pretty funny. She is a good Comm teacher and would recommend her. She raps a line from 8 mile in like the second lecture and she is very entertaining. If you pick a good labsmall section instructor then the class is really easy. The test though are pretty tough. Go to class, there are I clicker points.
Large lecture class, attendance is checked with iClicker. I'd say you need to be prepared to attend each and every class (lab and large lecture). The class uses iClicker heavily. The midterm and finals are fairly hard, even if you study. The class is set up very well and it is rather hard to get an A. You have to buy the book from BSU.
Everyone likes to hate on her but she is very sweet and tries hard to incorporate her lectures into being interactive and funny. If you email her she will help you with anything. My only complaint is that she gives you study guides for the final and the majority of the the questions are not relevant to the exam.
In the large lecture, just show up with your iClicker. She gives several opportunities for a lil bit of extra credit. The tests are hard, and the study guides won't get you a great grade, as someone else incorrectly said. However, if you actually take the time to read and comprehend the assigned readings, you should be able to ace both tests.
Dr. Denker is very knowledgeable in the communications field; however, don't focus on her too much. Get comfortable with your lab instructors and if you have any questions, e-mail the COMM department. Dr. Denker makes lecture fun :)
Dr. Denker's large lecture really was a bright spot in my week. It's a great wakeup class to get you ready for the rest of the day. On the other hand, it's a great prep for your small section classes and gave me an insight before the more in-depth talk later in the week. It's required, but even if it wasn't, I'd recommend it.
Her large lecture is required. Some students thought she was funny, however I disliked her. The mid-term and the final are harder, but she curves, so worry not. You get iClicker particpation and notes are a must. I liked small lecture better, with a smaller class and a different instructor.
Denker is the only large lecture prof, so you're going to have to take her. She is great, a little boring, but she tries her hardest to make it fun and engaging. The class only has 2 tests and she gives you study guides. She also collects attendance through iclicker points
I honestly learned nothing from this course and got an A. The course felt demeaning due to how restrictive and childish some of the guidelines were, particularly as I was an older student. I sadly have nothing positive to say about the large lecture professor and I wish this wasn't the case.
She's a good lecturer, but not a lot of students like or respect her. The class is awful no matter who you take it with.
has the best lectures at Ball State
Large lecture seems a little pointless because you go over the same stuff in small groups. Speeches are done in your small groups of about 20 people and maybe my small group leader is an easy grader, but you can get an A on every speech just for trying.
She has the best lectures on campus! Absolutely hilarious and was the highlight of my week.
She's good at what she does, lectures aren't too bad. Helpful in small section.
Does everything she can to make lectures relatable from rapping Eminem to letting s share or favorite pickup lines. Uses iclicker so that is your attendance points. If you have her for small group as well, it is a very laidback vibe and attendance is not mandatory except on speech days. Is more than willing to help if you need it!!!
Honestly if you are in her class, go on yikyak. Every Monday she and her blazers take over the app. It is honestly super fun. Also you get credit if you answer at least 75% of the iClicker questions
Some people dislike Dr. Denker, but she really is an amazing professor. I had her for large lecture COMM210, and she would always be on stage, playing throwback jams, wearing a blazer. If you get on Yik Yak in the mornings on Monday, you can see students playfully making fun of her blazers. Just pay attention in class and you'll be good.
Dr. Denker is so great. She is the only reason that I went to large lecture every week. There is material presented in large lecture that isn't in the textbook and vice versa. A lot of extra credit opportunities.
It's a lot of information in 50 minutes. I didn't enjoy the class but it's not hard, besides the midterm and the final. Those are rough
Only had her for large lecture, which was incredibly boring. But as long as you show up and do the iClicker questions you'll be fine. The only hard part about the class is the midterm and final. But I still passed with an A.
Dr. Denker is a great speaker & really enjoys what she does. She gets very excited & energetic during her lectures. I personally liked her lectures but many others say that they are super boring & pointless. The Comm210 tests are another story. There's only 2 & they are worth quite a bit. Make sure to study & make sure to read the textbook!
Had Denker for small section. Very personal teacher if you have her in small section, she knew everyone. Super funny. She's a picky grader on speeches but being in her small section made me do much better on the tests. One of my favorite professors. Everyone on YikYak hates on her during LL but if you have her for small section you'll love her!
Her lectures can be very long and she always holds you to the last minute. Sometimes the lectures can be boring but she does try to make them amusing or more interesting. Even if you do poorly on the midterm and final you can get a good grade by doing well in the small group sections, which aren't too difficult.
She is actually a fine professor and she isn't as bad as everyone says, but her lectures are completely pointless when you learn the same things in your small sec for comm 210. Don't worry too much if you miss one of her lectures. You'll be fine. And her exams are easy as long as you have access to quizlet.
Denker is a great professor. She is engaging and the lectures aren't really boring. Sometimes she surprises you and raps in class. At Ball State, You will have her for large lecture, but it is very enjoyable. Also the three lowest/ no show clicker points will be dropped.
She does her best to make the large lecture seem interesting and entertaining. You will almost never interact with her personally, even though she is your main professor, because the lecture is so big. The tests are fairly straight forward if you pay any attention in class, and she gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Her class was okay, but it wasn't anything special.
Denker was okay. She has a lot of rules and tries to make jokes to make class fun. Make sure you have your i-clicker and you show up to the lectures in order to pass the class.
This is one of the dumbest classes I have ever taken. She claims that if you come to class and take notes, you will do well on the midterm and finals. This is not true. She has tons of trick questions on the tests and you also have to take into account your speech scores. If you get a bad GA, you're screwed.
I loved her. Like yeah, her exams are seriously impossible, but she makes large lecture as fun and exciting as she possibly can. She is always available if you actually want to talk to her, but you probably will never speak to this women. Shes awesome.
I personally thought large lecture was a waste of time and that her lectures were very long , drawn out at times. Otherwise, she's an okay professor.
Dr. Denker tries to make lecture interesting, and she sometimes succeeds. This course is easy, just make sure to do your best on speeches and study for the exams. Don't be discouraged at the difficulty of the exams, because she will typically curve them. I never used her study guides, but I did read through the book before both exams.
Dr. Denker is cool and her large lecture powerpoints were interesting at times. But overall the class sucks. Small lecture does not teach you anything that is on the mid-term or final. The mid-term and final are extremely hard. Dr. Denker has a ton of trick questions.
Dr. Denker was very lecture heavy. She was good with examples and she definitely likes to get the class involved. Be specific with notes, because exams can be difficult.
She gives a lot of extra credit ops. Her lectures are fun and informative- but her slides may go slightly out of order on occassion. The average exam grade is usually a C, even with studying. Read the chapters to do best on exams. Need an iClicker. She wears a lot of blazers. Speeches in small sections, not large lecture.
She gives a lot of trick questions on the midterm and final. She say's, "the questions will have one clear answer," not true. I studied hard for both exams and ended up with a C''s on both. If your do all the extra credit opportunities, you can get an A in the class.
She is very kind, and she tends to grade fairly easy. She gives the best lectures because she knows how to attract students at our age. Lots of discussions, but they are usually pretty easy and simple to answer. Quizzes are easy as well.
Don't fall behind on journals and individual evaluations, read the chapters and you'll do really well on the quizzes. Katherine is really sweet and BEGS for people to respond in class so just do it
She can teach text book communication. Unfortunately, real life application fails. She hides behind the podium of communication and has no idea how to apply in every day situations.
I do not recommend Dr. Denker. The content of the class was easy but somehow she made it confusing. Very smart, but looks down on students when they don't understand. I never felt comfortable in her class, as did not seem to care about her students' well-being. I am okay w a strict course, but she did not make for a healthy learning environment.
This class was so fun and easy. If you show up to class you will do just fine. Do not fall behind on the journals, reading guides, or self-evaluations. She gives students so much time to complete these assignments and it is not required to finish all of them.
My favorite class/professor this semester! The class is mostly focused on group and pair discussion in class, so it's good if you like talking about hot topics and applying the material to your life. For my class, there were reading checks every Tuesday. Just 5 simple questions where skimming the textbook (or common sense) will get you the answer.
