This one will make you think. Well worth the money you pay, if you can handle the thorough but A.D.D. style of teaching she has. Talks really fast, but is seriously interesting and funny. Talks a lot about sex. Is a little intimidating. Doesnt take any crap.
Avoid this teacher at all cost
Kate is a really funny teacher. Some of the topics in class are kind of hard to understand because of her way of teaching them.
Kate's approach to anthropology is way more interesting than most other teachers- I had fun in her class and learned things that I actually wanted to. As long as you go to class and kinda pay attention, its not hard.
If you're looking for a 4.o this might be the wrong teacher for you.If you are looking for application of what she is teaching and how to apply it to what's going onm in the world today,She's a perfect fit . The work is challenging but with purpose. Never a dull moment in class either she's quite a character:)
It's hard not to feel guilty after leaving her class. She tends to hold against students the fact that they were born into modern American society. She's very passionate, but often that passion translates into meanness.
Funny teacher, tough but fair, hard to understand sometimes but willing to clarify, talks fast, very passionate. I recommend her!
And I quote,"I set you up to fail, but so you can learn from it." Her papers are so confusing.Nobody understands what this woman wants!! I was really interested in this topic, NOT ANYMORE! She tells you that if you are just looking for a good grade in her class you should leave. Honestly if you care about your grades AVOID!
If you want to get a bad grade, go for it. While her lectures can be interesting she doesn't have good way to teach her students what she really wants. she admitted that in all of her previous classes almost everybody got only a 50% on the 1st paper. Doesn't that reflect her teaching abilites?
Absolute worst teacher I've ever had. I agree with all previous comments...Do NOT take this class- especially if you are just out of High School- she tended to pick on younger students. She uses her class to rant about her personal issues, and will call you out if you do not involve yourself 100%
WORST TEACHER AT KVCC BY FAR! I went in during office hours to talk to her, and she picked up her phone and started talking on it! She gives you a 4 page rubric for a paper, but nothing helps. She makes you feels so stupid! Tests are VERY hard, (if you can read her mind you will do good on them). Worst teacher I have EVER HAD!!!!
This is the worst teacher I have ever had.I am an honor student with 4.0, and I got 37% on my first paper. She will tell you that you are wrong, even when you can prove you are right. She is very rude, hostile and argumentative.
AVOID! She is a total hypocrite. If your research doesn't fit in with her PRE-conceived notions, then you are wrong. If you can prove something that she doesn't want to believe, you are wrong. She needs to find a new career, because teaching makes her angry.
i did all my work and ended with a 65%. She cuts you off if you talk to her about grades or anything else she doesn't want to talk about. Very rude and unhelpful. I can name numerous instances when i wanted to cuss her out and FYI im a very nice person.
i love her! she is a very hard teacher and she expects a lot from her students. but if you put the time into the class you will learn a lot from her. i would recommend her to anyone that takes school seriously and has the time to do a lot of papers and homework assignments! She is by far the best teacher i have had a kvcc!
Horrible teacher! Save your GPA and avoid her. Unless you are in the mood to argue and be criticized stay away. If you like writing papers especially if you don't I would advise you to STAY AWAY! She will ruin you're grade and not care because you are supposed to learn from your failure. I have never disliked a teacher until I met her.
Kate's a skilled & knowledgeable teacher, but she demands thought & performance. She's blunt, uses the Socratic method, prefers application over regurgitation, & holds students accountable for their opinions & comments. When they stop being scared of her, most find Kate helpful. Her rubrics were easy for me to follow, & she clarifies when asked.
Kate isn't for the faint of heart or the typical "C = Degree" crowd. She expects her students to actually work and to use their brain. Anyone continuing on to a 4-year institution should prepare themselves by taking a class from Kate. If you don't like to work, stay away. If you don't like to think too much, Kate ain't your cup of tea.
she is very tough. it is definitely all about u in this class. u choose ur grade based on how much effort u put into it. She gives u many opportunities to succeed and there is really no reason y u wouldn't pass. she is a no nonsense person which comes off as rude and she is really no help outside of class.everything is easy enough. just pay attenti
Hard instructor that makes you think outside the box. However she is very knowledgeable and with good attendance nobody should have a problem passing the class.
Great teacher and is very interesting to listen to. Has great stories and is very clear on what she teaches. Quizzes are based off of what she teaches and if you study you are golden. Her papers are hard but if you do exactly what she asks there shouldn't be any problems. GREAT TEACHER!
AMAZING! If you: want an easy A, are sensitive, can't take a challenge, closed minded, or can't read dirrections then don't waste her or your time unless you want to improve yourself. If you want to really learn, I recomend her. She will make you think in a completley different way and she's not afraid to correct you. She is very well informed.
I am still not sure what I thought about this class. I got a 3.0 in the class which has been my lowest grade in 3 years.Interesting, just a lot of work that was tedious. The papers will confuse anyone. Not sure why, but she really doesnt like smart people especially when you talk. That is not a joke either! The teacher herself is cool..CRAZY but coo
Currently finishing her course. She isnt helpful when trying to figure out things and does not clarifies what she wants. She only wants contact with her over things before class(if there is no line) and on her home phone which she does not answer. She is very interesting but a horrible instructor. Will not accept late papers even with legitimat reason
She is amazing!!! She knows reality and lived it! Cats and all! If you want a smile on your face by the end of the day and your moneys worth, pick kate! Peace & Love.....Caitlin Krull & Emily Winans!!!!
She was the best teacher ever. She is funny and relates subjects to real life things for better understanding.
this class is an eye opener. I wasn't expecting to like this class and I heard it was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed the class. Best class I have taken this year. Soc 205 is hard but well worth it.
Had her twice. She seems intense at first, but give her two weeks and she warms up to you! Very, very intelligent woman. Can be confusing at times, but if you ask for her to clarify she does her best. She doesn't sugar coat material! I recommend her above ALL SOC faculty! You will learn to look at the world differently! Easy Exams!Just Listen!
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!! I love Kate! It is solely because of her intro to socially class that I've switched my major and i'm loving it! I've had her twice now and she really wants you to succeed and do well in her class. If you're looking for an easy a she's not for you but if you want to put in the effort and actually learn she can really impact you.
Kate is one of the most interesting people I've ever met. She is very passionate about what she teaches and really tries to get you to open your mind and think objectively about the world around you.Attend class and take notes on the study guides & the exams are easy but she's a tough grader on her papers.I took Sociology and Anthropology w/ her.
Intense is the best way to describe her. It's a good class and she tries to get you involved, but it takes a lot of effort to pass this class.
I LOVE Kate's classes. As other people have said, she is intense. But she keeps the classes entertaining and keeps you interested. There's never a boring day with her. Her papers are generally pretty hard but the tests and quizzes aren't difficult. Just take notes and use the study guides and you'll do fine.
I actually didn't think her class was very hard.. follow her instructions, do the work and you will be fine. She is a great and very passionate teacher. I even took this class too early in the morning but it was still fine.
The only teacher I did not look up on rate my professor before hand and it was a HUGE mistake. I passed with a B+ but it was still a terribly taught course. She offered very little explanation in anything and would almost get mad if you asked for clarification of anything. Overall a poorly taught course and a poor quality teacher. Avoid if you can.
If you want to get through this class the easy way, just agree with everything she says, even if it's wrong. If you try to think differently, she will hate you. Her papers are impossible as well unless you're an expert at over analyzing things.
This class was super fun. Kate may grade difficult but she wants nothing more than her students to succeed. She treats her class like she would a job&takes it very srsly. As long as you follow the rubric for your papers&call her to get help, you will do great. Awesome class!! I would recommend Kate!
Kate is a lively character and I really enjoyed her class. If your serious and want to learn take her class. This is no easy A class, but you gain great knowledge for a lifetime. Somewhat difficult, but I WOULD definitely take her class again.
If you do the work you will do well. Show up and be present you will learn some life changing stuff. been over a year and I still remember the info.
Although I am a right wing conservative and Kate is way more far left, I loved her and her class. She is an excellent teacher, and will help you, all you need to do is call her and she answers. She is super knowledgeable and no matter what your views are she really gets you to think. Not an easy class, but was definitely very rewarding.
I took SOC 102 at KVCC with her and loved her! She is very in your face and lively during lectures! She is very knowledgeable about sociology and makes you look at society completely different. Also she teaches the class using the Zombie Survival Guide!! I can't wait to take Anthropology with her!
This woman does wonders. If you have a very open mind, take this class! You will learn a lot, she knows her stuff, is very passionate, and loves watching her students learn. She is very interactive with the class, there was never a dull day. If you are closed minded-do not take the class you will only get angry. I totally changed my perspective.
Class is an eye opener, yes. But the tests are hard and she uses her own terminology and it makes it hard for you to look up any of her assignments. Make sure you check moodle all the time. Really hard class cannot slack. Suggest making a friend in her class for help.
I recommend this class to EVERYONE. The material learned in this class will change your life and the way you view the world all for the better. Kate is an AWESOME prof-Dont take her comments/tone too personal-she is fair and treats everyone equal. I also had her for SOC201-her teaching style really forces you to LEARN and have fun doing it
I love Kate. If you're close minded and unwilling to be told you're wrong in how you think, be prepared to hate this class. She's very passionate and helpful if you meet her halfway. Do not expect a free ride or special treatment. If you have any actual interest in the subject, remain open minded, and aren't too sensitive, you'll enjoy it.
I like Kate, I hate that she goes so hard on grammar, when grading I think its unfair, its not an english class. Tests some are easy others its like we didn't cover this, shes ok as a teacher but I wish she focused more on teaching anthropology then telling me about the world, not the worst ever though.
She is very rational but nothing will be handed to you in her classes. She gives you a view of things that you may never have thought about before. Kate knows her stuff and has great life experience to back everything she teaches. I think she is a phenomenal teacher as long as you are there to learn. If not, don't take her classes.
Loved her as a teacher. Learned a lot from her. She has an interested way to get students to talk and share on topics that we are not suppose to talk about.
Ethnic and Racial Relations. LOVED this class. LOVE Professor Ferraro. She's tough on grading but very specific with what she's looking for and as long as you follow the criteria, you get a good grade. She made a hard topic fun to talk about. I would definitely take another one of her classes.
Not an easy A, but very interesting. if you're looking for a class to skate through, this isn't it. Amazing Prof, though. Goes above and beyond to help.
Kate can be a tough prof, but she can also be extremely helpful. She gives out her personal cell for students to call at anytime for help. Be ready to take notes and study, if you don't you will have trouble in her classes.
I loved this Professor. I took 2 of her classes and she is one of the largest influences on my program choice entering the University. She isn't easy but she is interesting and if you really need help, just ask and she will help you understand. Don't miss classes and pay attention, I worked hard but felt like it truly changed my perspective!!
Kate was an Amazing teacher, she does not give away A's she makes you work for it. This class taught me to think outside the box, and my favorite class of my college career this far.
She is the toughest professor I've had thus far. When she grades a paper, she wants her students to show College level proficiency, and if you dont, YOU WILL GET MARKED DOWN FOR IT. She explains her reasons for exercises and grades, gives specific examples to support her teaching and expects students to be able to support their claims with evidence
There are two books. She says the little book is mandatory. The big book is like any life decision you have. Its up to you if you want it. DONT BUY IT. There is one group presentation. She is by far the coolest instructor i have ever had.
Kate is very funny. she is a true anthropologist. She loves African cultures. She loves students who can trail blaze and come up with new ideas. Great person.
This class was not at all what I thought it was going to be and if you have a hard time interpreting older style writing do not take this class. You have to read ALL readings and do not skip class. Kate is a very intimidating professor but she was always open for answering questions.
She was very hard and not to helpful in her teaching. Her exams were very wordy and hard to understand the question she was asking. If taking SOC201, I'd suggest taking the class with a different instructor.
This class was not what I expected at all. Honestly, hated the class and professor. She is decent at explaining things but she is rude to students and very dry. This class is one of the most boring classes I have ever taken. Also, there is no text book but she makes you print off 20-50 page papers for each class. Would not recommend.
Kate is unclear with her directions even though the homework is not hard. I heard that Anthropology was really fun but it definitely is not with her. Very boring class and she still does not understand US humor, i guess. I do not encourage taking this class with Kate.
She makes participation in class discussions mandatory, if you don't you miss out on points for the class. She doesn't explain things very clearly, she moves at a quick pace, her lectures are very boring, and her comments can discourage you from discussions. I would not recommend taking a class with her.
It's an okay class. However, she is a hard grader when it comes to papers.
This class was interesting-there wasn't any real lecture it was mostly just discussion and an occasional movie. She tells you what to know for the tests but can be very difficult if you try to ask her anything specific about the test. Same thing during class-if someone asks a question she doesn't want to answer she'll go out of her way to avoid it.
This class, like most sociology courses, was a waste of time. However, taking it with Kate is easy. Her tests are all online, but be careful of the first one because you need to do well in all of them to get an A. She considers 95 to be an A, so make sure you do well on all of her exams.
This class is made up of 4 multiple choice tests. The tests are pretty easy but you have to get an A on every test to get an A in the class. This class is extremely boring and you don't need to attend to do well on the tests. Just read the chapters of the textbook VERY thoroughly. Memorize charts/pictures
She was a very hard grader at first but over time in her cult anthro class it bacmae easier and easier to be honest she was a pretty fair teacher and i definetly learned alot.
Interesting topic. Kate is passionate about the material and describes everything based on her knowledge and personal experience. Pay attention in class or you won't pass.
She prepares you for the real world. If you miss class you miss information needed to pass. If you can't make it LET HER KNOW so she won't punish you. If you need help or clarification don't be afraid to ask. Very passionate and an overall good teacher. Encourages discussion so don't be afraid to talk. USE THE RESOURCES SHE GIVES YOU!
Kate is an amazing professor. She gives you everything you need to be successful in her classes. She makes lectures interesting. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. There is a lot of work to be done in this class but it's spaced out and as long as you follow her instructions on the homework you should do very well!
Here is the thing. I was worried to take Kate's class based on her ratings, but quite honestly, the people who give her bad ratings are just lazy and don't like to try. Seriously. If you TRY in this class, study, ask questions, and just do the work, you will get an A. Kate is absolutely crazy, hilarious, and will leave an impression.
She's a good instructor but she is not always clear but is wiling to work with you. If you do the readings and show up to class you will pass just fine. She tries to make this boring class as interesting as possible but I'm sure it's difficult given the topic that she has to teach.
DO NOT TAK THIS CLASS IF U WANT AN EASY A OR U JUST WANT TO BE LAZY SHE IS WAY SMARTTER THAN THAT IF YOUR A HARD WORK AND YOUR DETERMINED THAN U HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT
The class is pretty intimidating and the material can be hard to grasp, but if you just stick with it and try your best you'll pass. She assigns probably one of the hardest papers I've ever written, and don't expect a good grade on it, but if you show up to class and attempt all the other point, I guarantee you'll pass.
thought i was going to fail then at the end of the semester she gives you every chance to pass and i got a 2.5 in the class higher than i thought after i bombed the 5 page paper she is fun in class sit in the front so she can see you everyday it helps
First of all, Kate is an amazing professor and is very entertaining in class. If students talk to her, one can see that she really does want you to succeed in her class. As for the 5 page paper, if you go to the study groups everything is much clearer and you will do better on it. The homework is very easy, 10 minutes to complete, usually with EC.
I learned so much in this class. It was not an easy class by any means but it's one class that I will never forget. It changed my perspective on life and was a very interacting and learning prone class.
This class is not easy. She is not a easy grader. Her sense of humor may offend (more than likely) but still kinda funny. Don't buy the book you won't need it. Skip class? you won't pass. All i gotta say is good luck.
Kate is a great professor and is very knowledgable about anthropology and you can tell she loves the subject. She is a tough grader and wants you to be specific but she also genuinely wants you to succeed in the class. She has a VERY harsh sense of humor and isn't afraid to swear in class but just remember to take her with a grain of salt!
Kate taught in such a way that you would look forward to class with her. I loved every moment, and though she had many quizzes, they were relatively easy. One paper and a group project, but it was enjoyable. Not a tough grader, but you should pay attention and you'll do well. She tells funny stories and keeps the class interesting.
Very disrespectful. It's hard to sit in her class because she always has to be right and does not like to hear other sides opinions. I would stay away from her classes unless it's your last resort. Be ready to be offended.
Funny but not a good teacher. She's a cool person but do not recommend her as a teacher
She's super fun and makes learning interesting. Some people would say she's demeaning and rude but in all honesty she's saying what everyone else is thinking. She's real and too the point. In the beginning of the class i felt overwhelmed if you can make it to the 2nd paper and feel confident its an easy A. Wear thick skin and you'll be fine. :)
Kate is a force. She can be intense and may offend if you take things personally. She swears, but only to make a point. Look past her grit and you will see a teacher that deeply cares for the well being and success of her students, far beyond her class. I highly recommend her. Read the syllabus. Don't buy the big textbook. It's optional.
She makes you work for your grade and you need to be at class. You also NEED to do the readings or you will not pass. She gives you papers to write about every other week. If you ask questions she will make you work for the answer but she is still helpful. She may come off as rude but she is the only teacher who teaches this class so get ready.
Kate is a pretty good teacher. When she wants a specific answer, make sure you are really specific. Attend her study group for the 5pg paper, trust me it will benefit your grade. Her class is point based, so try to get as many extra credit points as possible. She can be sarcastic and rude, but she's usually joking or just trying to be funny.
She actually takes the time to remember people . Shes caring and honest.
Assignments are VERY unclear, and entire class is always messing up and she blames it on us that we don't get it, and that its "so simple" but does not help or explain what we do wrong. When you try to ask her for help, she just dismisses you like she doesn't want to speak to you or makes you feel very dumb when asking a question.
She is loud, disrespectful and gives a lot of homework assignments. She is not clear with what she actually wants out of you. She basically wants you to agree with her point of views and if not get ready to get slack for it.
Kate was my favorite teacher at KVCC. HOWEVER, if you are overly sensitive, lazy, or stubborn, don't take her class. She tries to challenge your perspective on purpose! She is teaching the simplicity of analytical skills, and most people don't get it initially, so it can come off as unclear or rude, but that's not the case.
Kate is very strict and treats class as a "work environment." Her assignments took me 8+ hours especially the journals from the book we have to read. She is not afraid to call you out in front of the whole class and will put you on the spot. If you have to take her class, get ready to work and spend all your time working on her assignments.
Most beneficial class I have taken at KVCC. Kate will challenge you like no other. If you are a self sufficient person take a class with her. If you need help she is available with a phone call. If you don't like strict instructors don't take her. But you will learn super valuable skills in this class. I would take it again.
Kate is very open and straightforward in class but teaching the material isnt her strong suit. Grades tough but doesnt explain why it was incorrect, but simply takes the points always.
Kate teaches like a "work environment" but when I fact check her online I can barely find anything that she says to be true. If you do not have her opinion she will offend you in front of the class. She called my friend dyslexic and only gave us 45 mins for the final which it was impossible to finish. She finds any reason to knock points off you.
Kate was the best teacher I've ever had. She is the reason I am studying Anthropology! She is an incredible person with a great passion for her field. Anyone would be super lucky to have her. She is a great lecturer and all the exams and essays are pretty simple if you listen to her in class.
I followed her rubric for her introduction assignment and she took off a point for literally no reason. I'd imagine she does that for every single assignment. I decided to drop the class before I could even give her the chance to mess with my 4.0 GPA. Ms. Ferraro, we can tell you write fake reviews on here, and nobody is buying it.
Kate was ridiculous. I started the semester loving her but that soon changed. At the end of the semester, my 94% ended up being a 3.0 instead of a 4.0 because she grades based on raw points unlike all other professors. This seriously hurt my GPA that I am working my butt off to improve. She assigned way too much homework and didn't explain grades.
I am currently in her Anthropology class and its okay. I personally do not think the class was altered or considerate of the pandemic that we are currently in because I believe her teaching style requires face to face instruction to fully grasp the material. But she is very accessible and responsive, anthropology just doesn't make sense to me
I would like to believe that she is teaching Anthropology but in my opinion, she teaches based off her mood. I lose points on every assignment because she always finds something wrong but doesn't get that her class material makes no sense. The kung stories are irrelevant. I wish I would've dropped
Absolutely the HARDEST class I have ever taken. Quizzes do not match up to the lecture notes! Is almost impossible to succeed in this class.
She is my favorite instructor and I genuinely enjoyed attending lectures. I would recommend learning how to take detailed notes before taking a class with her otherwise it may be difficult. Her classes were very informative and made me look at the world differently. She cares for her students and has their best interests at heart.
There are a lot of assignments, quizzes and tests in this class. A short paper every single week. She posts a lot of material to read/watch that is very time consuming. She does offer some extra credit, 1-5 points here and there. Although it is a hard class, I actually learned a lot.
Probably the worst teacher Ive ever had. Trick questions on quizzes, ignores emails, will only answer if you call. I can tell you why too; its because she is rude, condescending, and will ignore almost everything you say in the most frustrating way, and clearly does not want to have evidence of this available. Avoid at all costs.
This is one of the worst classes/professors I have taken/had. She has a ridiculous rule that if you have a question, you have to CALL her, no emailing. She is also an unnecessarily tough grader and claims to never ask trick questions, but there are always trick questions. And no re-attempts even though the submit page will say 3 attempts allowed.
Anthropology is thought provoking in its own right, but she makes it too difficult and is clearly only interested in her own ideas; however her assignments are vague, limited, and unclear what she wants when you get the comments back. She tries hard to take points off. On top of this, she is INCREDIBLY sarcastic and rude.
She is not responsive to emails. She is rude and condescending. She never says anything positive to students ever and doesnt give positive feedback on homework. Don't waste your time, cause she will find ways to give you bad grades for no good reason. Her lectures are not comprehensive to what she grades for.
Kathline is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She grades based on what's in her head, not taking the time to fully read what you write if she doesn't like it, nor does she even ponder your ideas, marking down for anything SHE doesn't think it is, along with grammar mistakes that aren't there while her papers are riddled with them.
Katherine FERRARO cares about her work a describes her personal accounts throughout her class. The information she delivers always has a personal touch. I would take her class every year.
Kate was okay. I truly don't think she has any ill will towards anyone in her classes, but her sense of humor can come off as offensive for sure. I've felt stupid more than once for asking her questions, and reading her nothing-but-negative feedback on assignments made my stomach drop every time. The online material helps MUCH more than lectures
Her instructions are very unclear, I had trouble deciphering exactly what she was asking in assignments. Somehow my 1 interaction with her was salty. I haven't had the urge to leave a review on any of my KVCC teachers until I had her, I feel that it is my responsibility to warn other students. Save your GPA and money!
Assignments are nearly impossible to complete because she is super picky (doesn't want you to be specific, but wants you to be specific at the same time.) I find myself having to stop and come back to assignments because I never know how to complete them the way she wants. Never has anything nice to say. Do not recommend this class.
I am yet to get more than a 50% on her assignments. Her lectures are written and short, and the supplemental materials are unhelpful. Her quizzes will directly contradict the information provided or are just factually incorrect. She will not take emails, only phone calls. This is completely inaccessible to students and should not be accepted.
