Personally, I liked her a lot. She explained concepts thoroughly, though the lecture often consisted only of her talking and a few overhead slides. Tests were easy but only if you read and go to class. Seemed motherly to me which I liked a lot. Thumbs up!
She had her grad students teaching the class, one every 2 weeks. Some of them were awful, some of them were pretty good. But tests were inconsistent - one would lecture and give a test based out of the book and then another would give one from lecture
Tough class but very interesting
interesting class...lectures could get boring
Her lectures were interesting and she gave a lot of examples to help with the concepts, which also helped keep it interesting. The paper was pretty simple and the poster was a nice break from the paper-intensive end of quarter. Tests were fair.
Interesting lectures...paper isn't really hard, and the poster presentations are fun. NO CURVE whatsoever, so don't rely on it!!
Dont take her. Take Thompson, she is easy.Gibb have her grad student teaches. Most sux. Atleast put the pwerpoint online if u gonna not allow us enough time to write things down. This class is suppose to be fun, but it isnt cuz of the way the TAs teach.
I'm sorry, did you say "professor"? She does not give lectures, just lets grad students take turns and collects her paycheck. It must be a dream job, getting paid for sitting in the front row of class without having to do anything besides sh
By FAR, my favorite professor here!
The class is taught by a group of grad students who each teach their specialty. I liked that because they all really knew what they were talking about. It was very interesting, but lectures move fast and be ready to take notes quickly!
who ever said she would be easy should be shot! her tests were super hard. to do well in her class, you have to read the chapters a bunch of times and memorize a bunch of random info. she doesn't write up on the board, so i would suggest taking notes on a lap top to get all the info.
Awesome!!!!! She is a great professor and her classes are interesting. The book she used for HDE102 was well written and easy to read. Her tests were straight forward and if you went to class you should be fine! She is also very approachable and a really sweet woman! Two thumbs way up!!!!!
Anyone who is interested in taking this class should be prepared to read A LOT. Lectures are pretty interesting tho. But she doesn't curve, so you have to work hard in order to get an A in the class. A nice professor.
Okay class but the tests were hard, (be prepared to take time before the final to go in during her office hrs to study the old tests). There is a hell of alot of reading for this class!!!
The tests are pretty hard and there is no curve but the papers are an easy A so it evens out. Interesting class.
Very interesting class and great professor. Her lectures were interesting; she knows her stuff. It's important to do the reading and there was a decent amount but not too much. If she offers to let you go over old tests in office hours, GO! Made the final exam sooooo easy. Paper was easy too.
I am so surprised that anyone would not like her. She is so sweet and such a good teacher. I din't feel like she let the grad students do all the work at all. Some people are just not happy with anything, I guess.
She's a good lecturer. Her tests are very, very easy. I enjoyed PSC 140 because of her.
If you've taken any development class before, be sure to go to class cause she dumbs it down a bit and only covers certain stuff. Easy tests if you go to lecture, the final is optional and all recycled questions from midterms!
I did NOT like Katy Gibbs at all!! Her lectures are long and boring and don't cover much. She expects you to do all the reading in the text and know all the details from it. Her tests are super hard and very detail-oriented. I studied a lot for her tests and was quite familiar with the subject matter, yet ended up with a C in the class.
Wonderfuly helpful and nice. Her lectures are a bit winded but she loves child development and tries to make it as interesting as possible. Her final is taken from the 3 previous exams (verbatim!) Going to class makes things easier. On the syllabus she tells you exactly what pages to read, so you don't have to read EVERYthing.
Her tests are difficult and you must do the reading to do well on them. She does curve, though. Paper was easy enough, thanks to the TA who graded mine
Although she is listed as the professor, she is not the one who lectures. Three grad students, who are very knowledgeable of the sections they teach, lecture throughout the quarter. Decent class. Not easy, but not too hard either. Pay attention in lecture.
Her class is super boring... Tests are fair... The paper was easy and it's worth half of your grade in the class. Do well on the paper and you won't have to worry too much about how you do on the exams. Oh yeah, she has one of those take the first 3 tests and the final becomes optional.
I didn't like Professor Gibbs. Her lectures are boring and only cover the simple material from the text, but her tests are extremely difficult because she expects you to know the fine details which she never covered in class. The paper is a piece of cake. An A is possible but it can be a frustrating process while earning it. Good Luck!
I don't think the class so too bad. We had 3 tests and an optional final. If you read over your notes and read the textbook you'll get an A. The questions on her test arent tricky they are pretty straight forward. Her lectures are kind of boring but it's definately possible to get an A. Our class average on most tests was about an 80%.
Boring lectures. Ends class early most of the time. 3 tests and optional final. No curve. No paper.
Nice professor. Her tests can cover a fair ammount of material, but the book is very dry (but complete). I'd recommend the classical notes so her lecture is clearer, because she tends to lecture colloquially. If you try harder than I did you can get an A. I skimmed the book and left lecture after an hour usually.
the lectures & textbook for this class were somewhat dry, but i know professor gibbs means well for her students. the topics covered were more interesting than i expected them to be. there were 3 midterms and 1 optional final for this class...very straightforward. good class overall.
its not hard to get a B but in order to get an A you have to read the book and you have to remember all the little details from it. and its really not interesting material no offense. i thought the class was gonna be about people's personalities but it was a lot about human development and outdated theories about kids. ugh
No powerpoints. No outlines. It is reccommended to go to all classes to get a better understanding of material. If you decide not to attend course, read the book! 3 midterms and optional final. No curve, optional final has some repeat questions from the 3 midterms.
Excellent professor!Has a charismatic way of speaking, lectures are a good compliment to the text book- which is boring but must be read in order to do well on tests.
Lectures were pointless to go to because exams were based on book and not lecture. Lecture material was not relevant to reading for most of the time. Lowest test score dropped. No curve. Exams tricky asking for little details. No PowerPoint. You are better off just reading on your own and taking the exams based on what you remember from readings.
Must read the book AND attend class in order to get an A. Lectures can be pretty boring, but overall a good prof. I didn't learn anything new... emphasis on developmental theories and less so on personality. If you have taken PSC 140 or HDE 101 this will be a piece of cake.
She's very disorganized, and her questions are fairly ambiguous. The information is pretty interesting though
Very disorganized. Her lectures are unclear and could be done in only a half hour instead of 2. she talks slowly and often has to go back to correct herself. Material is covered in almost every other psych class. Exams ask random details from the book, so make sure you read it. Can get an A, but be prepared to guess and make a lot of answers up
Very good professor. She discuss a lot of important things in lecture. Did not read the book as much, but is useful. Take good notes from lecture and study them. They often are on the midterms. Final was easy. ended up with an A-. Poster paper and presentation was easy. She's a good lecture overall. would take her again :)
Tests alomst entierly on lacture.
She was a good teacher. Very organized, you need to attend lectures and also get the book. READ, understand terms. i got D's on the first two tests. But she drops your lowest test and final was basically all midterm questions. ended up with a B. Shes good
Attendance is mandatory. No power point slides so you must take good notes and read the book. The grade is based on an article summary, a poster representing the article, 2 exams and an optional final (she keeps the best 2 exam scores) Overall, great class, interesting as well. I got an A. Highly recommend her, she's great.
If you do the reading and attend the lectures, the class is extremely easy. Or it was for me, anyway. OTOH, I had a friend who never did the reading and was bored to tears by the lectures and she struggled a bit. The lectures seemed a bit long sometimes, but it wasn't terrible. (No podcast, no PowerPoint, BTW.)
Easiest class ever! Don't need to go to class or read the book. She reuses old exams. Same thing goes with HDE 102. Buy classical notes as they help a lot and use the book website!
Honestly, to go against the crowd, one of the most monotone professors at UCDAVIS. She seems like a nice, sweet, old woman but her lectures are painful. The tests are so-so. I do not recommend this class at all-honestly I almost wanted to stop being a psc major because of her lack of enthusiasm.
Dr. Gibbs lectures are mostly what is on the test. If it's in her lecture and book, it WILL be on the test. Sometimes her explanations aren't clear. Have to read book to completely understand info. Going to class is mandatory. If you go to class and read, you will pass the class.
No power points or lecture notes. Tests in this class are tricky. She tells you that info covered in lec will be on the exams (which it is) and to read the text for big concepts. With chapters 40+ pages long, this can be daunting. Doing nothing but reviewing lec notes, like I did, will not get you an A. Upside: The final is comprised of old exam qs
Although there is no study guide for the midterms and she does not give powerpoint, i would have to say she was a good teacher. The explained everything as clearly as possible. If you attend lecture you will do fine in the class. Alot of questions relate to the lecture. I would recommend!
she doesn't post slides or use powerpoint. she just lectures but she is really easy to follow and is not intimidating so feel free to stop her and ask questions. there are 2 midterms and a final which is almost an exact replica of the midterms. all multiple choice. there is a short paper and a poster presentation which is not hard at all. take her!
Awesome teacher! I learned a lot of cool stuff just by going to class and taking notes. Didn't read the book and got an A. Grade based on best 3 of 4 tests. Take the final!! It's optional but every single question on the final was on a previous test. I got 100% on my final. Awesome teacher, cool class, take her.
I felt her questions on tests were really oddly worded, but besides that, she's not too bad. She's not the best, but she's not the worst. The final though is extremely easy, so I would recommend taking that for sure!
Interesting class. She explains stuff -really- well and tends to end lectures at least 30 minutes early(though most material are covered well). Reading the book is mandatory, but its easy to read if you attend lectures. Recommended.
This class was one of the easiest I have ever taken at UC Davis. I would highly recommend it. I Rarely went to class and when I did I rarley stayed the whole time. Dont get the book (its a waste of money) and just buy the course notes. I just looked over those before each midterm and got an A. Didnt even have to take the final!
4 grad students each taugh 2.5 weeks of the class and gave their own exams. This was the easiest class I ever took. Not a single assignment outside of class and graded completely MC tests each is like 30 questions, including the final. that doesn't mean the material is easy. ross, jessica, emily and yanine were the lecturers.
She is great and lectures well. Doesn't use slides or use podcasts so go to class or get classical notes. She also lets you out early almost every class and her tests are really easy.
No power points, no info online other than the syllabus, nothing. I suggest buying the classical notes and writing down anything extra she says during lecture in the margins. Her final is cake. Hint: There is a reason why she lets you keep her midterms.
Doesn't use powerpoints. Her class is basically just her lecturing, although if you listen to her lectures and read the book it's pretty easy. Just 3 midterms and an optional final, no homework.
She is so sweet and really does a great job in getting you to understand the material. I loved her! She's also unintentionally hilarious and yes her tests are cake but you still learn quite a bit. Talk to her one on one--shes the best!
VERY STRAIGHTFOWARD CLASS. she is verry sweet. this class was easy, but I also enjoyed the information. She has very good examples as well. Take this class!
Easy class if you attend lecture and the material is interesting. Also buy the course notes! I learned a lot from her.
Professor Gibbs is incredibly straight forward. I attended about 70% of her lectures, bought classical notes and rented the textbook and by lightly reading over the things she mentioned in class, I was set. Hold on to the 3 tests you get to take home. and review them closely for the final! the final is a great way to get a high grade and drop one
I read the comments of her and I was skeptical, but her class was interesting and interactive sometimes. I like the 4 tests(including the final) drop the lowest policy. Take the FInal because it is highly correlated to the midterms she let us keep. Overall I highly recommend.
Needed to add a filler class and decided PSC001 cause i heard Gibbs was easy. Turns out it was taught by T.A's. Lectures weren't posted online (who doesnt do this now), book was basically useless, and midterm reviews weren't helpful. First 3 midterm average was C-, and class still isn't curved. C- average for the class..and its not curved.
Awful! AVOID CLASS! Taught by T.A.s who write subjective/vague questions on midterms. impossible to get an A.
Gibbs is a great professor, she gives interesting and clear old school lectures. No podcasts and no lectures are posted online.Attend class and take notes.2 exams,1 paper, 1 poster presentation & 1 optional final.Exams are easy is you attend class and read assigned chapters.Mostly focused on concepts that she lectures on.The final is extremely easy.
Had graduate students teaching the class, tests were based on obscure questions and deliberately tricky. Extremely difficult for General Education course, class average was C- and rebellion by students led to her inflating everyone's grade by 15% at the end of the quarter. One of the worst teacher's I've ever had at UC Davis
Pretty easy class. Not the most interesting, but she will periodically give us a break with an interesting video. I really liked her and would recommend her.
Not a really hard class, but not super easy. She drops your lowest test grade so you have the option of not taking the final, which is based off the old midterms (take it, it's worth it!). Classical notes helped me a lot. Tests aren't too difficult as long as you pay attention and do the reading.
Class wasnt the most interesting, but definitely not that challenging. REALLY straight forward with her exams, and even told you what parts to focus on in the text. Dont bother buying a new copy for coglab(her or TA wasnt even familiar with program), but make sure to listen closely in lecture.. A little dry at times, but not a bad class.
A very easy class if you study your notes. There are three midterms and a final that is highly correlated to the last three mt's. Lowest score is dropped out of the 4 exams. She tests from the book, but there are only a few questions. She does not use ppt but she will write key terms on the board.
I would recommend using classical notes, if not take notes from the book they're similar. If you have old exams you're pretty much at least guaranteed a B+ if not an A, you also get to drop one exam!
Wow, great teacher! The lectures can be boring and aren't all that vital to attend, but this is by far the easiest class I've taken at UC Davis. Your grade consists of 3 midterms and an optional final (to replace 1 midterm grade, if you score higher). Very straight forward questions, and the final is the same ast he midterms! Highly recommend :)
Great teacher! You can buy notes in Classical Notes in MU. Better to attend class rather than just read the notes, but the notes have everything! Same as other people said below, final is super easy, all questions are from the 3 midterms.I don't read book, so I got 3 D but my A final push me to a C. Still pass the class.=) I believe you work harder
Easy A. I mean I really learned a lot in this class as well, but you barely have to go to lecture and the textbook isn't even necessary. Highly recommend!
she's a really nice old lady. her tests are recycled so that made it even better. get the classical notes.
Gibb is not helpful at all via email same as the TA. if you missed lecture about what to study on midterms and email them about it they won't tell you. she lectures pretty fast and it's hard to take notes. so better get classic notes and use it as a guide during lecture.
there's no ppt or notes posted on smartsite. everything is base on the book when she lectures. lmk via email ([email protected]) if your interested in buying the text book w/ a brand new coglab for good price!
Easy A, just study a bit before the tests and you'll be fine. The textbook isn't really necessary if you attend lecture. One term paper (4-5) pages, four exams, lowest score is dropped, and a poster presentation. Recommend
Tests are straightforward, study the lecture notes so you MUST attend class. Essay was not hard, just put some effort into doing it and you'll get a good grade. Very informal poster presentation, I liked it and I hate public speaking but it wasn't intimidating at all. Go over past exams for the final. Good prof, I liked this class =)
Cool teacher :) There are 4 mid-terms with the option to drop one. Re-cycled midterms... so thats pretty awesome. Lectures were fun, textbook reading not very necessary. Overall.. cool class.
Buy the classical notes. It will make your world so much easier. Tests are 50 multiple choice questions. Some questions are from the book, but 90% are from the lecture. Final uses questions from previous exams and you get to keep your exams to study for the final. There are four exams (final included),best 3/4 scores are recorded. No extra credit.
Gibbs doesn't use lecture slides, she just speaks. But it's actually not hard to keep up and take notes this way. CLASSICAL NOTES. Interesting class and SUPER EASY exams. Lots of old exams available online and from other students. Study moderately, and you'll get a solid A. Highly recommended!
Gibbs' class is structured such that I truly believe one would have to be some combination of lazy and disorganized to fail. Very fairly graded course with some interesting material. Classical notes is a big help because Gibbs mostly reads them off. Lecture can be dry but I recommend reading the book and attending lecture.
She does not use PPT, podcasts, or lecture handouts. Her lectures are organized, easy to follow, and informative. 4 tests, 50 mc, drops the lowest grade. I have taken her twice and I love her classes. Because she just does straight lecture, it forces you to pay attention. I could tell this class is her favorite to teach :)
Amazing lectures & fair tests. Clear as to what she wants & clear in teaching the info. The tests are easy but paper is luck of the draw. I was unlucky & got TA Kevin who blatantly disregarded the Drs wishes & nitpicked at everything in the paper. I received a lower grade solely b/c of him so watch out for Kevin! He's very condescending in OH, too!
Gibbs is by far my favorite professor. She is helpful and clear. Everyone talks about how easy she is but you learn a lot. You get a lot of feedback for your paper, so you can easily get an A+ on it.
One of my favorite professor's at UCD. Her expectations are clear and straight forward. Come to class everyday and take good notes. Most of what is on the exam is said in lecture.
I love Dr. Gibbs! She is interesting and very clear about what she expects from you. Expect 3 exams (lowest score dropped), 1 paper with 2 drafts, and a 2-day poster session. Gibbs' class is really easy if you do the work. READ (at least skim) THE TEXTBOOK & pay attention in class--you should do really well if you show effort on the assignments.
This class is really easy but that is not to say it can also be interesting. The poster project is fun and also pretty easy to do well. Use study guides found online (just google her class and they will come up) to help for the tests and you will get an A.
Tough grader, but very fair
Such a good prof and what a cutie! So sweet in office hours and always accessible. Very interesting and enjoyable classes! I learned a lot!!
