Very smart, well-read, and dedicated to teaching the students. Makes the reading interesting and always willing to work extra with a student. The best college level English teacher I've ever had.
Very smart teacher...Very down to earth and She is very healpfull...Just ask and she is there.Alot of work but i guess that is what college is all about! I would recommend her to anyone!

DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN!!! IF YOU ARE JUST LOOKING TO BREEZE BY LIKE ME, THIS IS NOT THE INSTRUCTOR FOR YOU!!!
Don;t waste your time.
Dr.Gilbert is very nice, but she is critical of your papers, what another professor may find to be an A paper she will most likely give you a C or lower. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
She was nice, but strict on tardiness.
This teacher is horrible. Her paper grading is hard. She is boring. Listening to her makes me wanna drop out of school. SHE SUCKS
This is the worst teacher EVER! Not only is she the hardest grader but she dropped me from her class because I missed one too many days. DO NOT TAKE HER! She is heinous.
she is a very difficult teacher. i read every assignment and spent up to ten hours with the help of a english major and still got a C. I suggest taking another professor like Douglas Capps
I had to drop this class because this is the worst teacher i have ever had! DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is intelligent w/potential to be an excellent instructor. Rigid attitude & lack of positive comments suppress students from engaging in classroom discussion. No marks directly on papers= difficult to correlate attached rubrics. Papers<C- may be redone. Work=not difficult. Struggling students can pass. Lack of encouragement demoralizes students.
This class was very difficult. Professor Gilbert is very demanding; there were several essays assigned, lots of quizzes, and lots of required reading. Yet, the class was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had while at Midlands Tech. If you want to learn, take her; if you are to busy getting **** to study, then drop and save some cash.
EXTREMELY difficult. If you are looking to slide on by, do not take this class!!!!
I didn't like this teacher at all!!!!1
This is a very demanding teacher. It is hard to determine what she expects with an essay because she is not clear on what she wants and how she grades it. I do not recommend this professor if you are not willing to do loads of homework with little reward.
horrible with gingervitis
I do not recommend this teacher! I studied and read for at least 5 hrs a week and still could not get a passing grade. I did not want to waste my time or a grade that would destroy my GPA. Do not take her. She is unclear on what she wants and offers very little assistance
She is EXTREMELY interesting! Teaches a lot about background of stories you read......but it's A LOT of reading. 2-3 stories everynight. not a class to take if you want to get by with not doing anything. A great class to take if you want to learn!
if you're used to getting a's a b's don't expect it in this class. the highest a student will earn is a c. this teacher expects published quality work, not student work. there is a lot to read and a test every day on what you read. quizzes not hard if you did the work. her grading system is hilarious, and not at all helpful.
STRICT,By-the-book. LOTS of reading and writing. MUST read daily assignments for pop quizzes. Vocab assignments due EVERY class.(If we had 20 assignments, she took up 18) NO CELL PHONES DO NOT BE LATE Very nice and willing to help. MUST READ
She is the worst english teacher i have had in my entire life! NEVER even leave a line off in the requirement of length for your paper or she will drop you a letter grade for the paper being "short"! she is rude and does not help and has quizzes and vocab due almost every single class and takes it up without warning! do not take this class!!
Dude, SHE IS SOOOOO HARDD!! SHES DOESN'T HELP SHE IS A REAL ICE QUEEN. NOT SUGGESTED I LOVE ENGLISH BUT SHE FAILED ALL OF MY PAPERS. NOT HELPFUL AND SHE WILL KILL YOUR GRADE!!!
She is the worst english teacher i have ever had. Most students dropped the class by mid-term. I made all A's in every other class but she gave me a C. To give you an idea of what your getting into I think me and one other kid passed the class. And that was out of 20 or so students.
OMG. this lady is crazy. why do we have to do vocabulary assignments and she chooses when she wants to take it up. i think that is a waste of students time. and dont get me started on the papers that she gives students to write. its like she gives the paper assignment every week. Please dont sign up for this lady class.
OMG where do i start...first of all when she grades papers like essays or something she doesnt write on the paper whats wrong..she attaches a gazillion page rubric i guess and puts it on there but its not clear so when we redo it we dont know what to do, and she actually takes off points because word put to many SPACES in between the words!!!!!!!!!
I have always loved taking Eng. esp. 1 that involves lots of reading. This class was not bad in the reading & quiz dept. but the paper pt. of the class really BLEW! Gives broad general topics & doesn't specify anything bout it...& don't get me started on the way she grades the papers. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS if u haven't wrote a paper in a while.
I think Dr. Gilbert is a very smart professor and I think she knows what she's doing. There are things that I don't agree with though, such as her grading system. And the little check list she gives you after she grades papers because I never know what to correct. You just have to STUDY REALLY HARD and make sure you do her assignments.
She has a rude attitude, and doesn't explain assignments very well. If you can keep up you may pass, but its a LOT of work. Vocab every night and she may not take it up. Quizes almost every class on what you read. She reads boring and is really unfair with the way she grades.
If you're not naturally intelligent to some degree you probably shouldn't take this class. The topics are broad but if you're a decent writer and willing to work you'll do fine. She's nice and willing to help those who are willing to work. If you don't come to class or use your phone when you do come she won't waste her time helping you.
Dr. Gilbert is one English teacher that I wish I'd never had. She just doesn't teach. She goes over the stories that she assigned us by reading parts and asking us what we think it may mean. But does that teach us how to write an analysis paper that she then assigns us? Besides her lack of teaching skills, she is rude and grades unfairly. Avoid her
English Nazi need I say more.
horrible!!!!! Get a real Teacher! Bad Attitude!!! Don't waste your money!
She doesn't help to explain hardly anything and grades really weird. She takes up the vocabulary you do everyday only SOMETIMES, and has 4-question quizzes on what you read. WARNING!: DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!
Make sure you are ready to work very hard in this class to earn a good grade. She is looking for perfection and grades extremely harshly. More than half of the people in my class dropped it but i'm glad i stuck with it. I learned a lot about writing but it came with tons of stress and work.
do not take her. you will regret iit. her grading is horrible
grades hard does not help you have to do vocab words like you're a fifth grader. read everynight get quized each class. dont take this class i have a 4.0 gpa and had to withdraw from her class to keep it that way.
If you get this teacher, DROP HER. I never drop classes, but in the case of her class it was just too much stress. She expects perfect papers and grades your paper on over 200 different criteria. Sadly, she NEVER explains what you actually did wrong and if you ask her, you might as well ask a brick wall.
Everything you've read up to my comment is true. Vocab like you're in elementary school, 4 ? quizzes almost every class, and grades papers SUPER hard. I'd make A's and B's on papers in all my other classes, but D's on her papers. In class, you just read over the things you read for homework and talk about them. Borrrinng! Wish I could've dropped!
I had this teacher and she was horrible! I got good grades in all my other classes but hers! I never understood the grading sheet! Never corrected papers on the papers or ever read your rough draft! This class made me not want to come to school at all! I hated the quizes and the vocab even though they were easy it was time consuming! Drop this clas
Prof. Gilbert a good teacher. To make a good grade in her class you have to work for it. It will not be given to you. She will help you if you ask for help. She explains directions very clearly. You must follow the directions to make a good grade. Over all...I enjoyed her class. But I did work very hard to earn a B. Always be on time with work!
strict and reads the syllabus as well as ethics guide for english department in first class. How I ever got a B I'll never know other than she felt sorry for us. I am very good at literature too. Be prepared for at least 4 essay projects adn all exams are "on the spot" essays from previous readings.
Dr. Gilbert has a different way of teaching but the stories that were discussed were very interesting and that's what the class is all about. Most of the grading is off of essays so if you don't like to write then don't take this class but for those of you that do, it's not that bad as long as you read and participate.
She is a good teacher, but she is pretty hard and sometimes monotone and boring. The exams are impromptu essays and she grades really strictly. If you're not willing to work your rear end off, do not take this class. If you are really willing to work at it, the class can really help you hone your essay writing skills.
hahahaha I suffered through this class. It's hard, but not impossible. I worked really hard and thought she might give me an A but I think getting an A in her class is impossible. IMPOSSIBLE
Prof Gilbert is honestly one of the hardest teachers i have ever had. She grades everything like her life depends on it. I work my tail off to pass and yet i made D's on every paper. In ENG 101 i made A's on every paper and finished the class with an A, but i have had the hardest time passing this class. If you take this class, GOOD LUCK
One word...vague. She grades essays very agressively. She do not like to meet with anyone individually because she do not have an office. If you are a good writer take her at your own risk, but if not get out of her class immediately! Trust me you will regret it if you don't. I mean she is nice, but you will be worried and stressed the whole time.
People are simply whinging because they did not want to put in the work. I have taken her two times, and have never made less than an A on a paper for her, because I am willing to work for it. Lazy people need not take this class, but if you are willing to put in the effort, you will learn a lot.
Dr. Gilbert is not easy or lenient. She is structured and disciplined and requires her students be the same way. If you put the work into the class, you will be more than satisfied with your grade and with the knowledge you come out of the class with. She grades fairly but requires that you work hard and be attentive in and out of class.
Professor Gilbert is a very strict teacher but she is very fair. She works with you if you have the want to succeed. To all you out there looking for a good English 102 teacher: Work hard and you will do well. This class requires dedication, interest and time. You can get an A but you will have to work for it-well worth it!
Absolutely awful, if you must take this teacher because it is the only class left at your campus, select a class at a different campus its worth it!!!
Terrible teaching. She gives you papers but does not explain what a "rhetorical analysis" is or what she expects. The only thing she discusses in class are the stories from the english book. We learn how to use a dictionary and literally spent 30 minutes comparing internet sites in order to prove wikipedia is not reliable.
She's not the worst, but deffo far from great. You'll get tons of material to read before next class (which could be within 2 days), papers are graded in a ridiculously harsh manner. Not a bad person, but from an educational stand point let's just say you'd do much better with another professor.
She reads every sentence in the book. She has a very harsh grading scale, which if you were a prefect writer you’ll never pass. Had to take her class twice. What I learned is, her grade scaling may be hard on papers but I think she just wants you to show the effort in the fact that you rewrote the papers like she lets you do.
I liked her class. she goes over all the stories that you read out of class and it helps if you had trouble with it. she is a little more on the harsher side of grading but its still very fair
She makes writing a thesis harder than it should be. She does not email her students for the life of her. She does not give time between papers when she hands them out. You almost write all of them at once. Overall I did not like her.
She is a great English teacher. Makes you read the textbook stories which are kind of boring. Have quizzes on the stories.
Average overall. First impression, I was like "o no". If she gives you a hand out, she will read every line of it in class (in a different voice). She is good at English. She will help, but keep in mind, it's not a hand out; it's direction. You do the work. You can rewrite papers, but do not miss a class. You'll miss a vocab assignment or quiz.
This professor is unbelievable!!! She using a grading scale that just doesn't make since and when asked a question she doesn't give a straight answer. She's a harsh grader but lets you revision or rewrite the paper. That's the only way you might pass! Basically drop her while you still can.
She is a really tough grader and when you ask her questions she doesn't really answer them well. When you think that you have done something to your best ability, think again because she will find anything and everything wrong with your paper and vocabulary. She will take off points for anything. Drop her if you can
Drop this class if you can. Really boring and you will have no drive to even try with her. She reads everything word for word, which is unnecessary and drawn out for a long period of time. It almost seems like she is from a different time period, making it difficult to even relate to her, much less communicate. Avoid this professor at all costs.
She is not too difficult but she is boring. She reads handouts word for word. She ends class early, but doesn't teach much.
I don't usually write reviews although I need to let others know this teacher is terrible! Do not take her class! Take the grade you made in 101 and drop it 20-25 points. Also, don't expect any feedback on your papers unless you stay after and talk with her.
Took Dr. Gilbert for 102 this past semester, and had no issue with her. She gave clear instruction, and her feedback made sense, enabling me to write A papers. Yes, she ready every word of each handout verbatim, which lost me from time to time, but that was the only issue with her. if you are willing to work, you'll do fine in this class.
Read multiple stories each night, with daily vocabulary due from the readings. Pop quizzes when you enter the class on every story you're told to read. Also adds homework on top of all of the reading.
Tons of pop quizzes on all of the reading she gives you each night, also a ton of vocabulary is done three words a day. on top of that she gives more work. Major writing assignments are in class on one of the 50 stories she makes you read.
she gives menial work to do every night such as vocabulary assignments that remind me of a sixth grade english class. these assignments teach nothing and damage your grade when you have a job and tons of other classes so you don't prioritize the vocal assignment that is a complete waste of time and honestly insulting to my intelligence as an adult.
Awful! Her teaching presentation is robotic. She really lacks commitment to her students. I do not think I benefited from the class. Which, ultimately is my loss as the student.
I didn't think she was that bad. She's very straight forward and doesn't really connect well with students, but as long as you just put forth the effort, you will pass. Beware of pop quizzes.
She really does sound like a robot. She's really nit-picky on grading. Vocab assignments were tedious and annoying but I made it through. I mean she's not awful, made an A. Not the end of the world if you get her, just not the best thing either. And I swear it's impossible to make a 100 on a paper(she's one of those teachers if ya know what I mean)
She was nice but kind of strange and very boring. Her voice is mono-toned so it's EXTREMELY hard to pay attention. She gives so many major writing assignments which can help or hurt your grade depending on how much you try. Homework EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. The homework helps none academically but will KILL your grade if not done. stay away if you can
STAY AWAY! This professor doesn't teach. We read every night for what is to be taught and the assignments due are on things we haven't even "discussed" in class. We have group activities everyday however have to turn in separate answers. She doesn't expand on anything in class its up to you to figure it out. Very strange and doesn't engage students
I did not like her at all and made an A in the class. She doesn't explain things well and the assignments made no sense and seemed pointless. Lots of quiz grades in class with group exercises and such. She is super dry and boring to listen to. I've always enjoyed writing but she just made me hate it.
Awful professor!!! She always assign group work but then grade us on the individual answers. I really got nothing out of this class she was very boring and dry. This sucks for the students!
Be prepared to write papers. She has high expectations. Rigid grader.
This class was the WORST. Every single day their is a essay or a paper of some sort. Class starts at 9:35, she starts teaching at 9:30. Don't show up to class? Zero on all assignments.
this is the WORST teacher i have ever had. she barely tells you how to fix your papers and grades hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Stay AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR did not connect well with students !! Was very hard to earn an excellent grade !!! Was very nonchalant . STAY AWAY , STAY AWAY , STAY AWAY !!
Im typically not the person who talks negative on someone, but Dr. Gilbert is awful. Theres a paper due every other day. SHE DOESNT TEACH. If you dont read the book assignment the day before, then you will have NO idea on whats going on the next day in class. She very nonchalant. ALL feedback are the same, more details, also a boring tone.
Rhetoric analyzed is vapid and modern, like Twitter messages. 3 quiz grades per class session. Frequent group work. Most readings about political left. Papers due every 1-2 class sessions. Classwork not allotted enough time. Grading standards poorly explained. Avoid. You don't learn the subject, which is the entire point of this "college" thing.
She is super boring, doesnt even teach, boring tone, tells you to fix something that doesnt have a problem, vague instructions to where you have to basically ask her what she wants.
I hate thos teacher! I got a good grade in her class but I had to work my butt off for it. She grades tough and doesn't explain why she gave that grade. She will tell you there are errors but won't tell you what those errors are. How can you do better in the future if you don't know what mistakes you made were? DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Part 1. If I could ever go back to when I picked classes, I should've picked a better teacher. Constantly every week we have to read and do papers, I mean like 3-4 pages of essays in a short amount of time and I have other things as well. Coming from Ridge View High School where we don't write papers, so I don't have experience on what she wants...
You will have up to around 3 grades a day. She does give feedback, it just isn't very helpful.
she does not work with you. very harsh grader. lots of papers and very hard.
If you are looking for an instructor that actually lectures, teaches the content well, and helps you fully understand what is expected in each assignment, this teacher is not for you. The feedback given is subpar. When you ask her a question, she never gives a straight answer, she always beats around the bush. She just doesnt genuinely care!
I took Dr. Gilbert for ENG 102 and it was the hardest thing I have ever accomplished and only scraped by with a C. We had about 3 Major Papers, 12 Short Writings, 13 Online Quizzes, and 1-2 even 3 classworks, A DAY. Not to mention the quizzes are 5 questions, either a 100 or 80. Also every assignment was worth 100 points so your grade changes fast.
I had a great experience! If you aren't naturally good at English it may be hard. Just come to class and do your work. Try your best to improve on areas you are weak in and you will succeed!
Don't take this professor unless you're already good at English. Everyday is a new writing assignment: if you hate writing papers, be prepared. Not only this, she often takes off points for a paper and the only feedback I get is "Good." Unsure of how to improve using that; not much to be learned from her. Also, no grades if you miss class!
She would grade participation grades as though they were ACTUAL grades, and not give any feedback on them. When she graded our papers, she gave nonsensical feedback. I asked her, and she just repeated the feedback she put on the D2L page. My classmates agreed that she was not grading like other professors. I would not take this professor again. >:(
Her strengths include being able to spot format errors for MLA on sight and knowing the content she teaches. Is also helpful when youre the classroom. Her weaknesses include giving you permanent zeros for assignments if done outside the classroom no matter the circumstances, is fairly inflexible. Get Covid-19? Say goodbye to your English Grade
Absolutely awful. Doesn't take work even if it's a minute "late". Wasting lots of time sitting in class not doing anything. Doesn't allow a chance to turn in assignments or redo work. Absolutely wouldn't recommend her to ANYONE!
this class is very tough. I went to her for extra help on my sources for a paper and didn't receive much help at all. I'm in her online class and she's a very tough grader. She doesn't see a student struggle and actually care to help. On review from papers she only grades the first paragraph out of many and says "apply this changes throughout.
NO NO AND NO! This professor was my 1st English professor in my 1st semester ever of college and gave me phobia that college is terrible, and every professor is like this. Not true, just her. She didn't teach 1 day the whole semester, gave us instructions and graded us at the end of the day. TERRIBLE
The headaches aren't worth it.
This class was undoubtedly the most stressful course I have ever taken. It was so challenging that it made it incredibly difficult for me to concentrate on my other courses. I strongly advise anyone considering this course to find another professor because the stress and headaches it brings are not worth sacrificing your sanity.
OMG The stress is real
Overall, Ms. Gilbert's class was a disappointing experience. Instead of feeling inspired or challenged in a positive way, I felt overwhelmed and disheartened. Education should be about growth and encouragement, but her approach made it feel like a chore. I sincerely hope future students have a more positive experience than I did.
Her grading is tough, often leaving students feeling hurt. Many times I see that minor mistakes can lead to big point deductions, making it hard to succeed in her class. The experience in her class is negative, with many students feeling unhappy with learning. The environment feels more punitive than educational, which is not good for learning.
From day one we had a new writing assignment every class period and every week we had a new paper due for a major grade. One of these papers included a 7-10 page research paper. Very harsh grader and minimal feedback. The only good thing I could say about her is that the final exam is easy, it's a course evaluation or a paper revision.
avoid this class at all costs you will have a total of 5 papers including the final exam, which isn't even your highest graded paper. The deadline for all of her assignments is on Tuesday at Noon, she locks all assignments after the due date outside of major papers. she also takes forever to grade your papers you wont get it back until 2-3 weeks.
don't have any.
I got dropped from the class by the professor. Classes started Feb. 10, 2025. An assignment was due by 12 noone Feb. 11. I received an email about the content of the class Feb. 6th and another email Feb. 11 just two hours before the assignment was due. The assignment was a bad choice asking for personal social media account post.
repetitive work unreasonable attendance policy lack of empath 0-10, would NOT recommend
The only feedback given from her is it needs more, follow the outline to the best of you're abilities it still won't be enough. If you follow the rubric to the best of your understanding it's never what she's looking for. Be ready for little to no clarity on assignments. No care for students coming to her for help. Lectures 5 mins rest is classwork
The worst professor I've ever seen in my life. Inconsiderate, rude and has no idea what she's doing. Issues low grades but can't give any feedback as to why or what to correct.
