she doesnt actually teach, just reads a power point to you while you "take notes" by filling in the blanks on your own handout like a middle-schooler. She lied to us by telling us attendance quizzes wouldn't count against us, only later finding out they do. she also wont answer questions because she doesnt even know the material shes teaching you.
Professor Harrell made learning Anatomy simple. Just study her powerpoints and the class will be easy because her tests are straight from them. Her looks alone will make you WANT to go to class.
This professor is useless! She doesn't even teach! Get ready to learn everything by yourself! You might as well memorize the entire book prior to the class. Get ready for most people to fail this class! She doesn't actually care about quality of material, it is all about quantity!!! She also doesn?t care about her students AT ALL!!
Worst professor! Told us attendance quizzes wouldn't count against us but they do. You have to buy a $40 thing just to take them. Tests are inconsistently difficult. Huge volumes of material she doesn't know. Is generally not very nice to her students, condescending. Clueless. Lazy. No review for cumulative final tests not returned.
Great professor! Told us 10 attendance questions would be quizzes. You can get the iclicker about $20. Tests are easy if you study. Sometimes she mixes stuff up, but she is human and not perfect. She's very nice if you go to her with a question. Not lazy..has the grades up very quickly. Will let you see your test if you go to her office and ask.
Alright, this is ANATOMY. It is not going to be a walk in the park. Overall she is a great teacher. If you read the book, then you would know that she leaves out a lot of info. Attendance is expected and needed. Study and ask questions and you will do fine. Do not procrastinate is my advice.
I liked her alot. The attendance quizzes are a piece of cake. I would look through my notes to find the answers and got a perfect score on them. The tests came straight from the notes. Anatomy is suppose to be hard anyways so study. She made the course alot easier than it should be. The people who don't like her were probably lazy and didn't study.
When I went to her asking her for help she gave "make notecards" as a solution. When I told her I had and that I needed some other way to study because I needed a good grade for UTC's nursing school, she told me that I could "look into other schools and leave UTC." GREAT ADVISEMENT KATE! You decide whether to take her or not.
Kate is a great professsor. I had her for both lecture and lab in anatomy. People that do not usually like her did not study enough because the tests came staight from the notes. This class is a weed out class for nursing and PT so if you do not do well then you probably could not make it through either program. Just study and do not procrastinate.
She is AWFUL!!!! She doesn't provide any help or explanation as to what to study for her exams. She gets questions from the MCAT. She doesn't care to explain things. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She's great! The exam questions come straight from the notes- it doesn't get much easier than that. She had tons of suggestions for ways to study & do well in the class and has always been super helpful at explaining stuff I don't understand. Just go to class, pay attention, read the book and you'll do fine.
Her Physiology lectures do not correspond with the book at all. She doesnt even use figures from our text in her powerpoints. The day before the test is spent cramming in all kinds of information that she has not spent time on before. Very vague about essay questions on the exam. Studied at least 12-20 hours for every exam. Hard tests. Have fun.
This class wasn't that hard to get an A in. It had more coursework than my upper level Biochem and Genetics class, but as long as you read the book, and memorize bolded words, you'll do fine. Dr. Harrell is nice, but doesn't stand for crap. Notes are a bit confusing, but she follows the book to a T. Don't blame the teacher if you cant hack it
This class is so study intensive. You have to attend every single class and study study study or you are screwed. Her tests are incredibly detailed and don't just ask broad questions so know every little cell and piece of everything. PPTS are online, but you might go broke printing them all. The book is helpful if you don't wait til last minute!
Get ready, anatomy is a complete nightmare. Harrell doesn't make it any easier. She stands at the front of the room and recites the power points, which are pretty much just the book. Gets you the material, but not in any kind of interactive way. Studying for her tests is really tough. Oh, and her voice can put you to sleep if you let it.
Her lab is strange. You don't record anything in your lab book, it's pretty much just studying for practicals? She doesn't provide any direction, just tells you which lab you'll be doing and stands around the edge of the room until you need her.
She's an excellent professor and obviously loves teaching anatomy. People that complain about her just don't want to put in the work the class requires. She's way better than the other anatomy professors. If you can't handle her class, you won't be able to handle med/nursing/PT programs. Quit your crying.
I think I would've done better if I hadn't tried her summer course. This full anatomy course isn't meant to be taught in just a month. She wasn't right about everything she taught us either: I looked it up. I didn't like her, but if you're really great at self-teaching, you might.
awful, do not take her. her notes are awful and very scattered. one day she will go over a topic and hit it back up maybe two classes later leaving you confused. she does not enjoy answering questions.
Her notes and the textbook are not helpful whatsoever with the tests. She reads off powerpoints without explaining anything. She will not offer any help at all. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
DO NOT TAKE. Her tests are ridiculously hard that usually don't have anything to do with her notes. They are not over content but minute detail. She also puts "review" questions on her tests from previous exams. If you're taking her class along with anatomy, you'll regret it.
In Anatomy lab, she is not as helpful as the other professors and doesn't have bonus questions of the quizzes. Her physiology should be avoided because you will have trouble with her exams.
she's my favorite biology professor; the ratings below are probably from students who have no clue how to study. she makes it VERY clear what the exams will cover so you'd have to be pretty incompetent to get anything less than a C
Her expectations for this class were beyond anything a normal student could reach. Her notes were way too difficult to follow and she read straight from her powerpoint. Very boring and monotone. Also her tests are nearly impossible. And to the person saying it's just because people dont know how to study, not true at all.
RECORD HER LECTURES!!! She goes so fast in class and her notes are in an outline form so you have to fill them all in. Tests are hard, but not impossible. She refused to address the fact that most of her class was failing. Not helpful. Knows her stuff, but is not a good teacher.
this class definitely gave me a good understanding of physiology. It was a lot of materual, but Ms. Harrell was always good at explaining things in class. I thought the notes were good for following along in lecture. And she always gives time to write stuff down, so it wasn;t too fast for me at all
Absolutely horrible. She's soft spoken and monotone and her lectures are so scattered and fast paced. I understand physiology is a difficult class, but she is not cut out to teach it.
DO NOT TAKE. If you do, prepare to put in hours of studying and effort without it being the least bit rewarding. She focuses more on information that doesn't really apply, such as small details about systems, rather than giving a clear view on the primary concepts of physiology. NOT a fan.
I really like her class. its a lot of info but i expected that for a summer class. Just study often and don't let stuff sneak up on you. ask her for help if you get mixed up, she's super nice & always enthusiastic and patient
I don't understand the bad ratings for her.... she's really not that bad! she's super nice and helpful!
Do Not Take! I am an A-B student and never have i ever at UTC had such a bad teacher. When asked for help she told me to "ask my peers." She reads her notes right off the power point and her notes are barely an outline. Im aware anatomy and physiology are hard classes but that doesn't mean the teacher has to be bad. Avoid her class.
worst. teacher. ever. so unorganized and her tests are Ridiculous with a capital R. read the book. good luck. avoid her.
Very helpful if you ask. Tests are hard but that's expected. I'm an A-B student and got a B in phys. She doesn't give handouts, but she will help whenever you need it. She's very approachable and enthusiastic.
Be ready to work really hard in this class! It is not easy to get through, but it is possible. Dr. Harrell is definitely willing to help people so go to her office hours. Honestly, it is a great class! The people that complain about it, I feel like they just don't want to put the time into studying. But I definitely would recommend taking her!
I really enjoyed the class! Dr.Harrell is really willing to help so go to her office hours! The tests are hard, but the material is hard so be willing to spends hours upon hours studying, but it is worth it.
She is so helpful and a great professor! People who complain just don't put the work in that is required. There is tons of information but she breaks it up into 5 tests. If you keep up with your notes, you will do fine!
Professor Harrell is so sweet and helpful! She's brilliant, but down to earth. Physio is a class with a lot of material to cover and you have to work because of that. Lectures are really helpful and clear. Talk to her if something doesn't make sense and she will be more than happy to help! I would definitely take a class from her again.
I had her for both labs and phys lab is easy, but anatomy lab you really have to work. Both have prelab quizzes and she grades really hard in anatomy. SPELLING COUNTS. on practicals is 14 a point off for every misspelled word. She's nice and willing to help during lab, but come prepared with questions and your TA's are lifesavers.
I have had tough prof. in my two years BUT this is the hardest professor I have ever had. She doesn't give access to slides and her notes are an outline for obviously what she wants you to read out of the book. Even had a tutor and only made a D!!! Main advice: if you have to take then don't fill your schedule with anything else important to major!
1st, her lecture slides are more like outlines, so either record or type your notes. 2nd, I advise to read the book; it truly helps clarify her jumbled up outline she calls notes. 3rd, study for the final; I made A's on all FIVE tests & made a low C on the final that caused my grade to drop 5 points from a secured A to a high B; I'm a little bitter
her notes are very clear and she tells you everything you need to know for the tests. I think a lot of people don't understand how to take notes- you have to actually pay attention to what she says (duh). anytime i had a question, she was more than happy to explain it to me. I also liked that she made expectations VERY clear from the very start
You definitely want to take Harrell rather than the other physiology professors. However, you are choosing the less of two evils with her. All of lecture you just copy notes from a power point. The notes don't go along in order with the book. She is so confusing, and half of the time you won't understand what's going on. Just study hard!
this class was very straight-forward; her outlines helped me so much when I was reading the book. If you just use those as a guide for what you're supposed to know, you'll do great. And listen in class! She tells you exactly what you're supposed to know. At least record the lecture; I was amazed by how much I was missing the first time
Anatomy is going to be a tough class, but i'm glad i took it with her. i had to study all the time and it is really paying off. the lectures are very straight-forward and so are the tests. if you pay attention and put the work in, you'll do fine
I had a great experience in this class- she DOES assign homework, activities etc, but lots of students did not do it. It helped me so much on the exams. Most of the questions were the same/similiar. Also, everything on the exams comes from lecture, so if you pay attention in there, you'll do fine. It's really not that hard!
anatomy with Professor Harrell was great; I learned so much! you do have to work very hard, but she's very clear about what she wants you to know. i would record the lectures and listen to them later and that helped me a bunch.
when i went to office hours, she was so helpful and explained all the questions i got wrong on the tests. all of the questions are super straight forward; there's nothing tricky about them. the haters just dont belong in the health care field, i dont want a nurse that passed anatomy just because they did homework. welcome to college!
i really liked this teacher, and i didn't think she went too fast at all. i always had plenty of time to write everything down, but i recorded the lectures anyway so i could listen to them again while i was studying. she is really approachable and easy to talk to, so go ask her if you don't understand something in the notes/on the test
anatomy was my favorite class, thanks to harrell making the info clear and easy to understand. quizzes and tests are straight from the notes- theres nothing tricky or obscure about them. if you put the work in, you'll do fine!
Harrells exams are really straight-foward and not too hard if you put the work in and study a little bit everyday. Just don't get behind and pay attetion to everything she says; take a recording if you have to! shes really nice and approachable so ask if you dont understand something
Def have to study a lot. Not an easy A or B class. Go to office hours. She's great.
Harrell is nice and willing to help if you go to office hours. This class is HARD. Gives lectures and doesn't put powerpoints or notes online. RECORD THE LECTURES. only way to pass. expect to study a lot. 5 tests and a final. You must work hard to get an A but it is possible. Doesnt take attendance but must go to class to understand the material.
this teacher was really helpful and i liked how we had to take our own notes. it made me pay more attention during class. also having lots of exams keeps a smaller amoutn of stuff on each one, so even though you have to work hard, it's not that bad if you know how to study. plus she tells you everythign you need to know!!
Hard tests. No notes on her website, so record lectures and do not miss class. The book helps with pictures and understanding concepts. Powerpoints are all over the place without an obvious order. Confusingly worded tests and quizzes. Make sure you completely understand concepts and don't just memorize them. Make a friend to study with. Good luck
she is very organized and everything was easy to understand in class. she gives page references for all the diagrams you have to know. And exams are super striaght-forward; if you pay attention in class at all, you'll have no problem doing well. i learned a ton in thsi class and it was thanks to this teacher!
This was by far my FAVORITE class at UTC and its all because of Dr. Harrell; I learned so much and she made everything super easy to understand. She never tries to trick you and always answered all my questions. You have to know how to take good notes; if not, at least record her lecture because she tells you exactly what you need to know
most straight-forward class I've ever taken; just pay attention and you'll do great.
Taking this class helped me understand the topics from physiology so much more. but take anatomy before physiology if you can. This teacher is very clear about what you have to know- if she talks about it, you better know it!!
You will learn SO much in this class! Just don't get behind and make sure you study a little every day. Harrell is easy to talk to and never makes you feel dumb for not knowing something. I recommend her!
definitely take this teacher for anatomy and physiology if you can. you'll have to put a lot of time in but it's worth it! plus shes very patient and has bonus questions on the exams
her summer class was very demanding but I expected that coming in; you just have to set aside time to study everyday and never get behind. She used a lot of great examples and drew out stuff on the board that helped me a bunch. Don't forget about the online quizzes! There's at least one every week and they help a lot
Physiology is a tough class but if you go to lecture and listen and take good notes, you'll do fine. She tells you everything you need to know, so make sure you write down what she says. Also make sure you study real hard for the quizzes- that way studying for the tests if much easier. She's easy to talk to, so ask if you have any questions!
Harrell always gives quizzes at the beginning of class to be sure you paid attention. My course only had a lab manual and not a textbook, but it's still very necessary to study. Her classes are easy if you really pay attention, but she over complicates a lot. She almost always asks questions about math formulas or names of tests, so study those!
I had her for physiology lecture and lab and learned so much. If you pay attention, she tells you everything you need to know for quizzes and exams. questions are very straigh-forward. if you put the work in every week and take it seriously, it's very possible to get an A or B. Just make sure you pay attention to what she tells you
I was really scared to take Harrell because of everything I had heard about her, but to my surprise she was a wonderful professor! You can tell she is very good at what she does and she loves it. She is good at drawing processes out in the lectures, which by the way are great! She is a fair grader, if she makes a mistake she will correct it. 10/10
You'll have to take all your own notes in this class, but it helps you pay attention. Just don't get distracted or you'll miss something important. She tells you everythign you need to know. If you're a slow writer, you can record the lecture. Treat the weekly online quizzes like mini-exams and it will help a lot.
If you really want to be prepared for your future classes, take this teacher. She is super tough but is also fair and clear about what she expects. If you really want to learn and understand how the body works, take her class. If you're just looking for an easy A, find a different major
Professor Harrell is a great professor! She really knows her stuff, and she is great at breaking down her lecture topics for further understanding. She is also very approachable. I went to her office many times to ask for help! Her tests are not easy though, so definitely start studying way in advance if you want to do well.
Harrell is very nice, but her lectures are hard bc you have to write down everything she says to be prepared for the tests. You have to pay attention every second of the class to do well. She sometimes doesnt explain things well so you NEED THE BOOK! and her tests are very very hard.
This class tested my limits, one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Take good notes. The test are super hard so start studying weeks out for it and be ready to work. She is really great if you go to her outside of class because she is willing to help and explain things to you. Just be ready for hard test and lectures.
Dr. Harrell is an awful teacher who goes way too fast. Her lectures are all over the place and unorganized. She doesn't post the powerpoint online, so you have to take really good notes. I would never take her again. If you can, get a different prof and if you can't then take the course else where. HORRIBLE.
This teacher is amazing! Physiology is a hard class, but she provides a reading guide and homework that helped me a lot. There is a quiz every week; take these seriously! If you pay attention and put the work in, you'll learn so much. if you dont understand something, just ask her! she's very helpful
She's nice but a little odd. Go to every single class and record the lectures or you have no shot at passing with a good grade. 4 exams and cumulative final, 3 bonus questions for a possible 109 for each test. Material goes quick and she is very monotone. Weekly quizzes are hard so take great notes from the lectures. Book diagrams will save you.
Love this teacher! Her diagrams are super helpful. Biggest thing is put in some work every day. Don't get behind because it's a lot of information, so you have to study a little bit every day
Great. Dint get behind though because it's really hard to catch up. But she is always willing to answer questions and tells you everything you need to know for exams if yiu pay attention
I've learned SO much from this teacher; it's a lot of info but very possible to do well if you go to every class and use the book. also pay attention to the figure numbers and page references in class and go back and look at them. tests are fair, usually have bonus questions
You definitely need to read the textbook and pay attention to diagrams. There are 4 exams (with bonus questions) and a cumulative final. Go to her office hours. You will do well if you work hard!
The key is to pay very close attention in lecture and keep up with the reading. She breaks down everything youre supposed to know, but its easy to miss stuff if you zone out. Exams come straight from lecture
I'm an A level student and absolutely loved anatomy *outside of this. The exams are extremely tough and include both surface level questions and in depth questions. You have to read the textbook and take great notes as they are not posted or any extra help material! I wish I had heard beforehand how many people take this course at another college.
If you pay attention and listen to what she says, you will do fine. Spend time preparing for class by looking at terms etc. She posts recommended homework that helped me a lot. And she would tell you EXACTLY what you had to do to get an A. I wish all teachers were like her
you have to take your own notes; this actually helped me even tho i had to work harder during class to get all the info. exams have bonus questions. and weekly quizzes add up to test grade. lots of ways to get points but you had better study a little every day. and the final exam is a tough one so youre screwed if you wait till last minute
loved this class and this teacher. I feel very prepared for nursing school and I really enjoyed her teaching style. She draws stuff out and explains things well. The powerpoints are only a fraction of what you need to know so pay attention to what she says
Really loved this teacher. Make sure you record the lectures and listen to them all back before and you can make 100+ on the exams. Also take good notes and try on the weekly quizzes. Its very doable even with a large course load if you prioritize your time. Very caring and kind professor also during office hours. Prepare for the final as its a lot
Professor Harrell is a very sweet lady who cares about her students. This class is very difficult and if you want an A or B you have to be willing to put in a lot of effort. I would say that I studied an average of 40-50 hours for each test and barely got an A in the class. If you are willing, you'll get the grade you deserve!
I absolutely love professor Harrell. She gets a bad rep bc her class is hard but she will make sure you know it. You will need to study ALOT for the exams but it is do able. Don't slack off you will fall behind. RECORD THE LECTURES it is a life saver! Go to her office hours she is more than willing to help her students succeed.
DO NOT TAKE HER for Physiology!!! Ineffective prof. Her tests are ridculously difficult. I have never studied so hard to make a C. Read all of the reviews on here. They speak the truth. I hoped it would be better for me, but it was just as awful as they described.
Do not take this professor for anatomy. You will regret it. Her tests are unreasonable and class does not prepare you to do well on the tests. Neither does hours of studying. Or SI. Or tutoring. Find another way to take this class. I wish I had.
If she was tough and you learned a lot, that would be fine. This is just bad and frustrating. Her lectures are scattered and disoganized, delivered in a monotone voice. Her test questions are designed to curve the scores, not measure learning.
this teacher was so great, she always Answered my questions and was very Clear about What was Going To be on the Exams. I learned a ton, but I had to work for it!
at 1st i was mad that she doesnt post notes but I actually ended up realy liking taking my own notes b/c i learned more that way. course is very straight-fwd and not bad if you just focuse. Plus I just got into the PT program and there is NO WAY I could have done it before her class, she made me a better student
just got done with her phys lab and enjoyed it so much, also had her for anatomy lect , which was harder but she is my fav cause she breaks everything down and explains in clear terms. And record lectures! that saved me in anatomy.
i took this teacher three semesters and didn't think she was monotone at all!! instead very interesting and helpful, always took time to answer questions. always gave recommended hw and pages to read which helped a ton. make sure you take good notes and do all the hw and ask if you get confused
my fav class and teacher at UTC, she always tells you whats on exams, just dont fall behind and do all the hw! oh and go to office hours if you need help!
retook phys with harrel and learned so much more second time around and realized i wasnt ready first time i took it. start on day 1 taking good notes and reading because this is fast course but organized well. exams are not tricky if you listen and do the work
super nice teacher, always will answer questions and take time to explain stuff. pay attention in class b/c she tells you what essay questions will be. you have to take your own notes so be ready for that. exams arent bad if you study a little every day
Take this class seriously! Harrell is very nice but very tough. Don't get behind. Go to all the classes and take good notes. She puts extra credit questions on exams. Mostly multiple choice and essay. Weekly quizzes add up!!!
Professor Harrell was not a very good lab instructor. She was really bad about updating grades, so it was still unclear my true grade towards the end of the semester so that's really annoying. Her quizzes were just harder than a normal quiz. She is a very tough, tough grader. I'm sure she's a nice person, but I would not recommend her for bio lab!
this teacher was great; she always was approachable and answered my questions, even though the lab was tough, she made it interesting and straight forward. but you absolutely MUST do the work every week otherwise you will fail the weekly quizzes.
Super nice person and likes helping you if you get confused. Evry time I emailed her, she responded right away and she helped me a lot with my lab report and went over everything with me. Take the quizzes seriously because they add up! Do the defintions and questions ahead of time because the lab will make more sense
it's all about time management with this class. Harrell is great and helpful but you still have to lt the work in.
Dont even think about emailing her for questions because you will 100% not get a response for a solid week
anatomy will seriously challenge you but if you put the work in, you will do well. I liked this teacher-she was helpful, responsive and her exams were super straightforward.
physiology is the real deal; take this class seriously; Harrell is awesome but if you don't understand lectures, you wont pass
!ATTENTION do NOT take her for physiology. I got an A in the class and the difficulty of achieving it was equivalent to getting a 98-100 in other science courses at utc. Her tests are designed to curve grades she is horrible at responding to emails. Lecture videos were difficult comprehend A's are reserved for the top 5-10% of the class, STRESSFUL
Physiology with Professor Harrell is HARD. She makes you work for every point you get, and she doesn't give extra credit. This class is extremely hard and requires lots of time and energy. I do not recommend taking this class if you're not going to dedicate lots of time and effort into it, but you can do it! Good luck!
Physiology lab is pretty easy. With Professor Harrell, we had a weekly lab assignment and quiz over the material we learned. The final wasn't cumulative and Professor Harrell is really helpful with any questions you have about the info in the lab manual.
physiology was super hard but definitely doable if you put the work in. Dr. Harrel was very helpful and answered all my questions right away. Online lecture was very organized and easy to follow but you have to study every day or you will get left behind!
I learned SO MUCH in this class! Had to work my butt off but Harrell is fair and responsive and explains things well. Great teacher, would recommend her to anyone who is willing to work hard and wants to really understand what they learn!
