I got an "A", but I really didn't like her or the class. There is a lot of reading and she forces you to participate. There are 5 essays, no exams.
I found her to teach and 100 level course like a 400 level course. There is soo much reading and watching videos and plenty of papers. I found this class very challenging.
I swear by McCaffery. If she wasn't married, I would try and get with her. She is awesome. She does want you to read and participate in class. If you hate these things, maybe you should look elsewhere. Other than that, I recommend her.
There is about 30 to 50 pages of reading for each class. No test just 4 short papers, and she grades fairly. Be there and participate and you'll do well.
be prepared to read 50 pages before each class... also be prepared to answer "intelligently" when put on the spot in class. lots of papers.. teaches a 100 as a 400 level! watch out!!!
She's very intelligent and easy to get along with. If you do your work she can be a fun professor. Only papers, no exams. Oh yeah, she's very attractive too.
alright..you have to read alot and she always picks on people to participate and talk about what you read but she is nice so i guess it balances out
She is very smart and you have to participate a lot in this class, a lot of papers and a little too much reading but overall a worthwhile class.
Way too much reading and she forces you to participate. 4 hard papers, but no tests. she grades fairly, but i did not enjoy her class
Way too much reading and work for a 100 level course
u dont have to read as much as some say. i rarely read and just paid attention and used my notes and book for the papers. it can be an easy a if u dont go stress out and read the 100+ pages per week
Once again, I had the opportunity to take McCaffrey. The end result was another great learning experience. She wants you to read a lot, but this prepares you for the intense in-class discussions. A wonderful and very pretty teacher. Take her!
very intelligent and clear, she knows what she is talking about and makes the class interesting.expects you to read a lot, but as long as you skim over it and know what the titles mean you will get by. the papers are graded hard, if you go to her for help, she will be there to help you.
Awesome Professor! She made this cass interesting and I learned so much from her. She helped me with my papers and I got an A- on both so far. Intense class discussions, but just do the readings. Definately take her if you are not lazy!
By far the most interesting class I took @ MSU so far.She is incredibly intelligent and even though her class is no easy A, it's well worth taking. You have to work for your grade but if you're here to actually appreciate issues in the world around us, you're in the right place. Thanks McCaffrey!!
If you dont like to read dont take this class, she has you reading something every night, and is often quite lengthy. In class she is not very interresting. I dropped what ever class I had with her after a few classes.
she is an excellent teacher. she cares about the students and their participation.
She is a good professor but does assign ALOT of reading but you definitely come out of that class with a lot of knowledge of South America. Classes are OK but if u do the readings you would be fine. The subject matter is very interesting. Be prepared to buy 4 books.
Way to much reading. But you can skim through the reading go to class and you should manage at least a B+ if you can write decent papers. Its an intresting class and you will have fun at times.
She will call on anyone at time to participate. Classes are run more like and opinion forum then a lecture. NO EXAMS Just a few 1pg in class writings and three 4+pg essays. A lot of readings and e-reserves. Skimming through the sub-chapters will provide enough knowledge to participate adequately.
I dreaded going to this class! She is not a very fair grader b/c even if you fix what she told you to in your future assignments, they are still wrong! Plus, she should keep her political views to herself and not use the classroom as her soapbox! God forbid you should disagree with her!
Lots and lots of reading for this class. You are expected to read around 150pgs of material per weak. She calls out names randomly, and asks questions about the readings. She doesn't lecture, her class is just how well students answer the questions she asks.
She's just a very annoying person just dented my GPA for nothing. i think sh'es addicted to genocide. All we learned about the native latin amer class was how people killed and were killed for a 100 level class it's an unecessary headache avoid her at all costs. Very annoying
She is the best. The class has a lot of reading, but you really learn a lot. She helped me when I went to her office hours. Very understanding, very nice professor.
If you don't follow along and do the reading, you will prob dread the class and be lost. 3 papers werent too bad and she really helps you if you don't do well. She's very nice with a good sense of humor.
I think Prof. M was great. It was alot of work, but you get alot out of it. It really changed the way I looked at the world. She is tough, but very concernful of the students and always has time for you. One of my most interesting classes, and not just because she is pretty.
GREAT PROF. I LOVE HER TEACHING STYLE, SHE KEEPS THE CLASS INTERESTED IN THE MATERIAL. LOTS OF READING, BUT I WOULDN'T HAVE IT OTHERWISE. THIS CLASS CHANGES YOUR VIEW ON THE WORLD AND THIS COUNTRY WE LIVE IN! SHE KNOWS HER STUFF AND IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING INTERSTING TAKE HER. EASY A, JUST DO THE WORK! NO TESTS
One of the best professors I have ever had. I loved this class. She has a wonderfully engaging style of teaching and gets the whole class involved. I learned a lot in this class and it changed the way I think. This class is not for apathetic students, everyone is expected to contribute and think for themselves.
Dr. McCaffrey was a great teacher. She got everyone involved and kept you interested in the class. No midterm or final exam, & not too much work. Great class.
2 papers, no exams, cancelled class about 4 or 5 times...group work during class, i took no notes at all for this class and did fine..be prepared when she calls on you to contribute or you'll look like a ****
One of the greatest professors at msu...3papers...3 in class writings....no midterm or final...nice and helpful...easy class...doing the some of the readings and u would do fine...Take Her
VERY nice lady! VERY easy class! No midterm, no final. Just a few short papers. Just be ready to say something intelligent at any given moment - she calls on everyone, all the time.
Worth taking. Not much work, but reading every night. 4 papers and takes attendance. Learned a lot and would take again
She is the best teacher I have ever had at MSU, the easiest class, and the best subject matter. Class consists of class discussions and readings...that are interesting. I hate to read, but the stuff she gave us to read was great. No final no midterm, 4 papers and if you do well enough and are happy with the first 3, u dont have to write the 4th!!

A lot of reading, and the papers were hard, almost no one got an A on the papers. The concepts were interesting but everything you state in class she twists it completely around.
Shes a really sweet lady but the class was hard. the papers are alot of work and ALOt of reading every nite. . 3 books! The class discussions were interesting and the class wasnt boring .. but she picks on everyone so make sure you do the reading. She will pick on you at least twice in one class.
No tests. 3 papers last one optional. Grades the papers rediculously hard! States the paper is good, but you some how get a C on it everytime. MUST GO 2 CLASS! SHE CALLS ON YOU RANDOMLY. DONT BOTHER RAISING YOUR HAND..YOULL GET CALLED ON. Interesting Class tho atleast
She does assign a lot of reading, but if ur an anthro major, then u should be used to it. a few papers, just follow her guidelines and you'll pass. Def worth taking
4 books, 4 papers. Don't take class if you are taking others that expect you to read 80-90 pages a week like this one. Doesn't say much unless you ask, but asks a lot of questions. Class does encourage critical thinking. Everything is based on the text so if you dont read the material you'll be left without getting anything from the course.
Eh. Three papers, a couple of in-class writings. Class is a drag. Mostly had to sit there and listen to people rant about what they thought was right and wrong with the world. Assigns a lot of reading and you need to keep up with it. Was not directly taught anything. Take another professor if you have the chance.
One of the best professors I've ever had. She really cares about the subject matter. You'll get some new perspectives. Do the readings and be active in class.
This woman is barely competent to teach this course. My extensive background in military history, usually an asset, is a liability in this class since she is only interested in the simplistic, snap-shots from the text, not an in depth discussion which takes the historical narrative into consideration.
One of the best professors. Makes you think critically and truly analyze the material. Not just a boring lecture but usually a discussion. Class went by quickly.
This professor is completely useless and incompetent So opinionated it hurts and in her essays if you suggest a different thought or idea from hers or the book you will lose points She also has aBIG WEIRD twitch when it comes to cell phones that needs to be checked by a REAL doctor DONT TAKE her class is painful and depressing to go to and ididwell
I wasn't sure if I'd like her because I know nothing about anthropology, and she seemed kind of intense. I've grown to really enjoy the class. LOTS of reading, some of which is very dense. Couple of movies to watch on your own time. In-class writings can be tough: focus on what the AUTHOR says, NOT interpretation. Very nice, very good teacher.
best teacher i had this semester, rest of them were dreadful. she actually facilitated discussions of the works and kept students interest. actually learned in her class without 2 much work. not a hard grader if you follow directions and get the gist of the readings. strict with some things, lenient with others, all around great prof, take her!
A lot of writing assignments and quizzes on reading assignments. The work was sort of annoying, and she really loves group work. But when she can make the class time pretty interesting
Class isn't easy but a good Professor. Wants you to do well, but expects you to put in the adequate amount of work (its an honors course). Decent amount of reading, three papers, no final, several in class writings. Don't miss too much class. She's witty so she can appreciate you making her laugh every once and a while. Smart lady...take her.
Cultural Anthro - Lots of reading and writing but its not too bad if you are halfway smart. Class time is just group work and discussions. She's pretty cool, witty, and laid-back. I learned a lot in this class and it has inspired me to take some more Anthro courses. One of the better classes I have taken in recent years. Highly Recommend
Don't know why anyone wouldn't like her as a professor. Class is easy and interesting, but people complain about the amount of "work" they have to do in the class, but if you actually put time into your studies, you'll do perfectly well on the writings and class discussions. She's super nice and smart and overall a very good professor.
Very good professor. I would differently recommend her. She's very laid back and is there to help when needed. The work load is quite a bit for a 100 level course but it was a very interesting class.
Dr. McCaffrey was an awesome professor. A little intimidating b/c she'll randomly call on ppl to answer questions, but if you make sure to do all of the assigned readings, you're golden. No midterm or final, just 2 papers and a few in-class writings. she'll give you the topic beforehand, so you know exactly what to write about. Definitely recommend
This professor is organized and engages her students every class. She assigns 3 papers which are discussed in class so they're very easy. Manageable amount of work. In class writings, which she tells you the topic prior to class. She doesn't just lecture so she's fun and enjoyable and helps you learn, not just memorize material. Take this class!
She is the best professor I've had yet. She is so intelligent and well versed in a lot of different subjects. Her readings are really interesting and she uses a great variety of mediums for learning. Highly recommend her. Her grading is extremely on point.
I loved dr maccaffrey. she is an intelligent and fun teacher. she got me interested in anthropology and the work load wasnt bad, you should just stay on top of the readings. i really enjoyed this class and would love to take another class with her again.
TAKE HER! Class is easy as long as you do the readings. Two papers and in class writings, no tests. As long as you basically summarize the readings for all writings you will get an A. If you don't miss a class you get extra credit. Readings can be long or short, but just do them. She will pop quiz if she thinks you're not reading. Occasional HW.
No tests, no midterm or final. Easy class but she is very opinionated. She will call on you when she thinks you're not paying attention. Do the readings and you will get a good grade. Only have to do a couple of papers.
Hands down, one of my favorite teacher. She doesn't give any tests, midterms, or finals. Just do the reading and youll get an A. If you go to every class, she loves that so shell boost your grade up. Only like 2 papers which were really easy. She loves to hear peoples opinions. Love her and her class. Take her if you can !
Very opinionated. You will not get an A on assignments unless you have the same opinion as her. On an opinion paper, told me my writing was excellent but I should talk about her views. Knows a lot about her topics. Calls only on students who are taking notes, when almost everyone else has their hands raised. No tests, quizzes or final. 4 papers
She's awesome. Doesn't feel like a class, open discussions and so interesting. No tests, just in class writings that are easy after you get the hang of it. Definitely take her. Loved this class (even at 8:30 AM)
She's really cool. You do need the book. There's 6 in class writings and the final, which she gives an outline for. You do have to find someone to talk to every class so if you don't like social interaction then it's not for you. But overall she's good. Just do the reading and write about what the book says and you'll be fine.
One of my favorite profs. Interesting lectures. Weekly in-class writings and a final. Many complained about the grades on the writings... She is not asking for an opinion, "background in military history," or anything else. She simply wants you to write about the information in the readings, so she knows you read the assignments-- with no opinions.
BEST professor! super sweet and work is super easy. In class writings based off the book and a final. So straight forward. You'd have to be really dumb to fail this course. The lectures are always interesting and theres always fun group discussions. So kind and lenient, I wish I could take her again. You wont regret taking her class!
Her sarcasm is hilarious!! Teaching style isn't your typical lecture learning class. Participation does matter and you MUST do the readings. She calls on you and asks you question so you better be prepared or she will start giving the class pop quizzes. No tests or papers, just in class writings! She gives you the question the class before, so easy
I loved her class. It is more discussion based and she does randomly call on you so make sure you read what is assigned.
Loved her class. Very easy.
Really nice professor! Class is very straightforward and the lectures are conversational. She is very funny and approachable. Learned a lot in this class. I would recommend this class to anyone, it is great. DO READ THE BOOKS AND WHAT SHE ASSIGNS. The class is so much easier if you read.
She's very rude and a bad grader
Dr. McCaffrey is a very knowledgeable professor. The class is very interesting and she has everyone participate in the discussions. You need to read the chapters assigned in the syllabus, follow the instructions and you should be fine. Try not to be absent, and she only gave us 1 test; a cumulative final. Its really the only 'difficult' thing.
She's a bit rude, but overall a pretty good professor. Class is clear, and grading is based on in class writings. Make sure you have the book bc it's needed for the in class writings which is essential to passing. Only test is the final which wasn't that bad, but you deff need to read and study for this class to pass, it really isn't bad at all.
My favorite Professor! I take a course with her whenever I get the chance. She is always willing to help. Her take on sustainable communities is holistic and her curriculum is eyeopening. This prof. is also really kind and cares about her students. The class teaches you a lot about economics, environment, and equity and you will learn so much!
Professor McCaffrey assigned a good amount of reading and watching, but that's expected because it's an honors course. She sometimes is a bit too heavy on discussions and it feels like she isn't really teaching. Her feedback isn't always very clear, but still understandable. 3 papers, 5-6 in-class writing assignments, no tests.
She makes her students read an absurd amount and there is also a lot of writing that is done in the class. Make sure you participate because it is a large portion of your grade.
My favorite class this semester. She has interesting lectures and gets people to participate. You must read the texts because we talk about it in class and we have a few in class writing assignments that are graded. Overall, there is not much homework in this class besides reading. I learned a lot in this class.
She has a MAJOR attitude. She freaked out on kids for getting up and needing to go the bathroom.
I really like this class. The professor is organized and helpful. I feel that she really cares about the students and helped me when I reached out to her. I would recommend.
Professor McCaffrey is the head of the anthropology department and puts all of the other professors to shame. By including multiple ethnographies she makes it so much easier to break down understanding of the area. There are 3 quizzes on topics discussed and the final is very simple with vocabulary, short asnwers, and an essay she tells in class.
McCaffrey is a fantastic teacher! She makes the class extremely interesting and fun. The only graded assignments she gives out are very easy if you take the time to study. I always looked forward to going, and I'd definitely take her class again.
I took this professor a while ago and her core focus was on the struggles in Vieques. At the time it felt like she was only teaching to sell copies of her book and you got a good grade if you just repeated her globalism, open borders ideology in your papers. She was nice and passionate, but she let her politics interfere with her grading.
Gives an absurd amount of reading to do starting from the first day of class. Made a mistake should have dropped the class when i had the chance
She is an awesome professor. Definitely my favorite class this semester, manageable workload. Would recommend.
Gave her a wrong review, she is a great professor just know what the question she assigns you to read abt. Dont really even need to read. Easy professor her personality is great.
She was a good professor as long as you participate she give you extra credit if you go to every class. She was nice but kinda was really like aggressive at some point. you had in class essays and a final and participation mattered. You could jus skim through the books and know a little bit and make it through with an b easily
Very knowledgeable professor. Seems passionate about her subject. Expect to read a lot and come to class ready to discuss. Very participation heavy class. Tough grader on essays, be sure to work hard. Definitely try your hardest to reach out and get on her good side- talk after class, office hours, etc. Great woman.
Easy class. 4 books are read and a in class writing is given for each book. The in class writing question is given before class and you have to answer it in the next class closed book. Just memorize your answer and you will do well. A final exam and a small project are the other grades for the semester. Easy class to get a good grade in.
You have a lot of books to "read", but i aimed through them and pass with a decent grade. She's give you basically the main points of each book to know for the final. you have a few in class essays that she gives you the questions to it the class before so you memorize the main point and you'll do fine. The finals easy cause she gives you everythin
Dr. McCaffrey is a great professor. She makes the class interesting and allows you to gain an understanding of the subject. She has a good sense of humor. If you do the work and participate, you will enjoy the class and the discussions. I never thought I would like anthropology but I ended up really enjoying it because of her.
Classes are heavy on participation, and get ready to read. You have a week to read a couple of chapter but they are long. Without reading you cannot pass the final and in-class writings. Only one project. If you do your work you will be fine. Best professor I had so far, so informative and caring. Really made me interested in the subject.
Taking this class was the highlight of my week. You have 4 texts that will be read fully but it is manageable as long as you skim the reading. The class is just a discussion of the reading and the reading quizzes (5 in total) are just a review of the reading. The topics in the class are V interesting and her passion for the topic make this classfun
THE BEST PROFESSOR! She is so great at explaining the topics discussed in class. The readings are interesting and she makes going to class exciting. She made my first semester so much fun and you interact with the classroom and classmates a lot which makes the class even more fun and exciting.
Dr. McCaffrey has to be one of the best professors I've ever taken! Her classes are always interactive & NEVER dull. She is big on participation, but she is clear&fair. Her syllabus is always very organized&she is very knowledgable in what she teaches I've learned a lot from her&I've taken her 3 times! Would take her class every semester if I could
Lectures are great.
It's an easy class but it still requires effort. McCaffrey is one of those rare professors that still actually lectures and encourages you to learn. I took her class back in 2011 and I had to come back and leave her a review because a lot of the information from this class stuck with me after all these years and that's the sign of a good prof.
McCaffrey was the best professor I've had so far in college. She genuinely cares about the success of her students and works well with you to make sure you pass the class with an A. She's super kind and caring. I would definitely recommend taking her!!
You need to read the four texts she assigns because she will ask you about it. The writing portion is pretty simple, and the final wasnt hard at all if you pay attention. Also make notes for each reading assignment so it will help you on the final and also the writing portion which is leads with a question.
She was a relatively interesting professor, made me really want to consider Anthropology as a minor. She makes you work for your grade, participation is key (won't do very well without it) and don't skip! I loved her assignments and dedicated so much time for them, the readings were super interesting as well. Overall, kudos to her.
Professor McCaffrey is very nice. She will call on you if you dont have your hand up, so make sure you do the readings she assigns and pay attention. She gives written quizzes after every few chapters, but they are very easy. I enjoyed her class and found it easy and interesting.
She is great fun and be ready to read because she gives paper
Decent professor, assigns papers every week that are 250+ long. Pretty simple just read the books and complete the assignments and you'll be fine.
Can be a difficult class but amazing teacher. Lots of reading homework and a decent amount of writing but she's very easy to work with and get help from. She's great at facilitating discussions in class and as long as you participate you will be good when it comes time for the papers. You do have to work hard in this class but it feels rewarding.
Participation in her class is key. She also does a lot of group work during her lectures so get ready to get called on. There are weekly writing assignments, 3 exams, and a paper. She is a tough grader and i could never got a 100 on an assignment. She also gives good feedback. The class is interesting but it can be frustrating at times
There's loads of reading with the occasional extra credit assignment. Participation matters and you *will* get called on. If you skip class, it immediately has an effect on your grade, so try to make it each day. Additionally, the grading is tough, so try your best. You got this!
I learned a lot in this class. The professor was demanding but reasonable, and I enjoyed class discussions. Would definitely recommend Professor McCaffrey!
I did not like McCaffrey too much. I tried to enjoy the class and her but I felt like she pushed her political views and the class was extremely rinse and repeat. We read interesting books and I liked the structure, but I was looking at the clock a lot.
She's a nice professor, she gives weekly homework assignments but be prepared to do them since she usually has people go into groups and participate to talk about the reading, she also does call randomly on people. Honestly as long as you do everything right you should pass. The class does require three books, but you can probably find them online.
Took this class with my ex bf who loves history, he pmo every class. The prof was really nice tho and the lectures were fun enough considering it was history. She doesn't want any fancy writing, just participate in class and write what you can prove.
Professor McCaffrey is engaging and makes the material interesting. Participation is key - be prepared for discussions and expect to be called on. Use Unstuck study and the textbooks to stay on top of the weekly assignments.
She added a new community service component ( 15 hours in-person ) which was very interesting. She relies a lot on group discussions in class so definitely prepare to talk to your peers a lot. There was a weekly journal and she will know if you don't read the assigned chapters. She's a lovely woman and is very kind and understanding.
