Oh boy. Dr. Ramos seems like a nice fun person up front but in an instance she is intimidating, rude, and mean. There seems to be some favoritism going on because she could yell at my group for one thing and let another group slide for doing a worse job. I had anxiety around her because i didn't know if she would yell at me or compliment my work.
Compared to the other professors that teach GEEN 1400, please avoid this one at all costs. GEEN 1400 is a required class for all Engineering Majors at CU and so when you register for this class, please register for literally any other professor. She is so uptight and strict, a C in her section is an A in literally any other GEEN 1400 section,
Dr. Ramos is very passive aggressive, uptight, and overly critical when giving "advice". Also, this teacher poorly paces when assignments are due, and gives students way too many unnecessary projects/presentations. For example, every time a huge deliverable is coming up, she plans it to be due on a midterm week. All in all, Dr. Ramos is not good.
Dr. Ramos is extremely rude not only to her students but even to her TA's. She tries to come off nice and friendly but she is condescending and unpleasant. Don't be fooled by her seemingly friendly laughter, it just means she's about to insult your ideas. If you're going to take this class take it with any other instructor!
Literally don't take this class with Prof Ramos, she gives to many unnecessary assignments that take up time form your final project. Also you will be doing presentation every other week.
Prof. Ramos does not take well to constructive criticism about her class even when she doesn't teach the same way every other projects teacher does. You will have unnecessary assignments and presentations that no other sections will have. There is also very little creative freedom when it comes to choosing your project. Pick another professor.
The professor puts in a lot of effort to bring out the best in each student. Many assignments and presentations were given and no other section had. However, the work prepares your group for the Project expo and builds your skills. Overall if you want an easy A take any other section. Else if you want a project you can be proud of take this class.
Professor Ramos really cares about her students, and her passion for teaching is obvious. She will push you, but you will get real opportunities in this class to network and build your resume. Don't take her section if you're only in this for a grade, take it because you want to gain relevant experience that will help you in your future classes.
Dr Ramos is a very passionate about teaching and prepares each student to do their best in the class. You get so much more out of this class than the other sections. Plus, donuts and candy were great.
Dr. Ramos was nice enough. There's a lot a lot of assignments and presentations. There's very little wiggle room for any late or missing work. If the group work is unevenly split, she does nothing to help. This class is entirely too much work.
Dr Ramos is unhelpful and unpleasant. It seemed like she compensated for inexperience by being strict and rude. She made me feel dumb for not knowing how to do certain tasks and was generally rude when I would ask questions. The lectures were redundant and not useful. If it is an option, I would recommend taking this course with another professor.
Please do not take any classes with Professor Ramos. She is incredibly passive-aggressive and condescending. I had her for GEEN 1017 (Engineering Drawing) and she was entirely unhelpful and annoying. When asked for help she would often say comments such as "You should already know this by now" or "I already went over this in lecture."
This was Professor Ramos's first year teaching at Boulder (2021 - 2022). Maybe she thinks her attitude was okay when she was teaching before but she does not treat her students with any respect whatsoever. On a separate note, the TAs for this class were great and extremely helpful. Hopefully she with either get better or not be at Boulder for long.
The syllabus and what she would say about our grades did not line up at all. There were many inconsistencies in the course due to her inexperience. Professor Ramos would be condescending when asked for help however often times she wasn't able to solve the issue presented. SolidWorks is fun for GEEN 1017 but don't have this professor.
She teaches this class like a regular high school class. Its incredibly demeaning. She seems power hungry and has a need to control everything. Due to this, she gives extra busy work and assigns assignments which have nothing to add to the class.
annoying
Absolutly awful, I mean pick literally any other section of GEEN 1400. She assigns busy work that other professors don't assign. Treats her students like children, and doesn't exactly seem to care about anything besides making sure all her students know that she's in charge.
Assigns lots of busywork and treats an intro course like an upper level course. Choose another professor.
Super passionate and hard working teacher. I've seen a lot of reviews on her saying she comes off as "power hungry" but I can guarantee you its just because she's trying to make sure everyone has working projects by the end of the course and is making sure everyone is on top of it (especially since the course moves so fast).
Condescending and rude. Just take someone else.
This professor will be inconsistent in grading and gives busy work. She focuses on professionalism, but only talks down to students or is visibly annoyed in her tone. Take any other professor for this course and it is almost a guarantied A as long as you complete both projects assigned. She was the most unhelpful and strict professor I've had.
Dr. Ramos is very detailed oriented in her lectures and posts everything on canvas. She makes sure all the students are understanding the material as well as participating in class. Amazing professor overall.
Ramos made an otherwise enjoyable class miserable. CAs taught us more than she did because she cared more about attire than helping us improve. She made asking for help something to avoid. She gave random assignments the same week as major deliverables. The pace is insane compared to any other section. Your best bet at passing is to kiss up to her.
take this class with any other professor.
IF YOU ARE TAKING GEEN 1017, Ramos is a really good professor! The canvas is orginized and you know what to do. In class she is helpful with questions, and has a positive attitude. There's some HW and most of that is just watching videos. You can work in pairs, she gives out extra credit. If you take GEEN 1017 it is easy if you do the work.
She rarely was able to provided technical feedback, meaning the CAs were mostly responsible for helping freshman students navigate their engineering project. Lots of busy work is assigned in this class. She clearly had favorite students or "groups" and can come off as condescending.
Avoid her at all costs. She is the absolute worst instructor I have ever had. She is condescending, treats us like children, and even treats her TA's the same. She takes up 30+ minutes of each lab repeating info she has already told us which leaves us to work on our projects into the late night. She makes what could be a fun class intolerable.
Avoid at all costs.
Horrible. : (
Dr. Ramos is a very kind and caring professor. I'm not sure why many talk down on her. Yes she demands the best from each of her students but it's only to prepare you for real life to be professional and respectable engineers in and out of industry. She is very technical and wants the best for her students, so show up, and communicate as needed.
Worst professor I have ever had. Avoid at all costs.
She is a really annoying professor. Very condescending tone when talking to you and makes you afraid to ask questions because she makes you feel so dumb when you ask. Honestly, the TAs saved me in this class cause if they weren't there I don't think I could handle interacting with Dr. Ramos.
Barely explains anything and gave a final project at the same time as engineering projects so 3D printing was impossible. Barely prepared me for the CSWA. Without the TA's I would've failed
Dr. Ramos is a very professional professor. All things need to be done by the book if you want a good grade in the class, it also depends on whether she likes your group or not, which can be unfair to the students who are good but just have a group. There are some unnecessary busy work assignments, but it was a decently fun class at the end.
Professor has very little knowledge of the subject and often makes mistakes while writing tests and lectures. She has never admitted to making even the most obvious typos, and often tries to gaslight students into believing they are the ones at fault for not understanding her lectures or questions.
This professor was so bad that when people raised their hands for help and saw her coming, they would put their hands down, wait for her to walk past, then get help from a TA. She was very condescending and makes you feel like you are not good enough for the class when you ask for help. Shoutout to Rohan the TA for making this class somewhat decent
She was rude and is weird when it came to rules. I wanted to do a topic for my final project, but she didn't give us the ok saying it wasn't complicated enough. On the final day, we see a group present with literally our idea, like an exact copy. People before them were presenting the same ideas as well so I don't know why she wouldn't let us do it
She is the reason why you check a Professor's rating before signing up for a class
If you wanna meet a know it all, take her class
Avoid. I am taking a coding class where whenever I go to class and ask for help I en up even more confused. There is a lot of work, and she is of very little help. TAs do not know how to speak english. This class has been impossible. Do not take mcen 1030 with her.
She tries to reinvent curriculum; the intention is good but poorly executed, quickly passing over important topics, emphasizing the non important/simple; Calc 2 and Phys 1 are LITTERALY prerequisites for this class. The class is so boring and no one follows along, the know it all notion is partly true and the grading system is so bad.
I dread showing up to class every day. She is the closest thing to a living devil. She created possibly the dumbest way to grade. There is zero partial credit. even if your code is missing one letter it will be graded as completely wrong and you wont get any credit. I have never had less respect for a teahcer in my life.
This is the worst class I have ever taken, she is condescending, often leaving me more confused after asking for clarification. There is SO much homework, she is so specific, one thing wrong on homework or tests, it's wrong. I have never been more stressed after going to a class in my life. Don't take this class, turn around and RUN the other way.
I was ready to take anything before I took CSCI 1300. Big mistake. Huge. She is so condescending and gaslights you into thinking you are stupid even when she just gave the most confusing explanation known to man. Her grading system is terrible. Labs I received ZERO credit for would have been 95% in a normal class. I am good at coding-trust me-RUN.
I made a Rate My Professor account just for this. She is extremely condescending, treats students like children, yet expects perfection on assignments. The grading system is awful. I got a 99% and still regret taking this class. Some weeks I spent 20+ hours on work. Avoid at all costs. I'd rather take this class at 8 AM than with Ramos again.
Her requirements for our final project were very vague, but when we went to review our ideas with her she seemed to grade it based on feelings. When I met with her to review my group's project idea she said "I'm just not really feeling it" and wouldn't really give any feedback on how to improve it since it "wasn't her project." Put shortly... Run
Her grading scale is a mess...you're grade is split into 5 categories and you have to meet certain requirements in each to get your designated grade. You can get an A in every category and a C in one and then your grade is a C. There is zero partial credit but she still does written response exams only...nobody else in the department does this.
The only professor that has teaches a 3 credit hour LECTURE and decides to assign a group project that takes weeks of excruciating time and effort requiring skills in things such as solidworks (in which not all students have taken yet). They only gave students a week to do about 70% of the project in the middle of midterms. The grade scale is TRASH
The "exams" are either all credit or no credit which makes 0 sense for ALL free response questions. If you don't understand a topic you can retake them, but the time constraints are horrible. Also a group project with little instruction and your basically told to figure it out... which you get about 1.5 weeks to complete 3 weeks worth of work.
She is god awful. She stole another professor's (Daniel Godrick) lecture slides and the entire curriculum and put her name on it and took credit for all of it. It was because of her actions that my class didn't have any more supplies to use so we had to use the bare minimum that was given to us. For the love of god... run.
The class itself wasn't bad because of the TAs, but I honestly don't think I've ever had a professor appear more uninterested in their students than Professor Ramos. It often feels like students are seen as a burden.
Have you ever looked at a food dish that looks good on the outside but taste terrible on the inside? that exactly what Katherine Ramos is like, except terrible on the outside AND the inside. NEVER take a Katherine Ramos course unless you want an easy class to be impossible. She makes countless mistakes each lecture, it's a miracle she's still at CU
This professor is the bane of my existence. She is so bad you can tell the VERY few five star ratings she has on here were written by her to heighten her average. The fact that she still has a job at this school is beyond my comprehension. She told our TA he needed to stop answering questions because we needed to be more confused? literal rage bait
She will BRIEFLY mention an exam at the end of lecture. Never posts it on canvas. Maybe an announcement the day before. So if you were sick for the previous lecture surprise! Make sure you have a friend to keep you updated. If you email her and tell her you are sick etc she won't even respond.
Has no idea what shes doing. Its like she slammed her head repeatedly against a wall when making the course and again before each lecture.
Exam today and Prof. Ramos gave directions 10 minutes before class, leaving people who were still early confused. She randomly decided we're having a final exam on the last evening of finals, forcing students to reschedule their flights home. Thought CU might be keeping her around for research -- nope, she's a teaching professor. Truly baffling.
This is an intro class and Prof. Ramos refuses to clarify key concepts, telling you to "ask someone else" or "check the slides." The class is disorganized and she has changed the grading system multiple times. TAs have saved me. If you need to take MCEN 1030 just do CSCI or take it over the summer, assuming she is still the professor.
Not sure if the 100s of bad reviews convinced you not to take her, but this is me contributing. She hates everyone, including herself. This class is very disorganized. Suprised shes still allowed to teach here
This class was the absolute worst. The grading system is complete trash and she says it's set up to "help us" but I promise.. it does not. The exams are either 100% credit or zero credit for WRITTEN RESPONSE. Like who does that???? Please do not take this class. You will regret it.
I just love it when my professor doesn't reply to my emails or answer questions in class. She doesn't know the material and doesn't care about her students. DO NOT take any course with her. She'll make up her own grading system which is meant to help us LEARN. The system would be great if she actually worked WITH students and not against them.
She created her own grading system where if you dont get 100% on the assignment, you got a zero. To make things worse, you were graded based on your lowest group of assignments. She would often realize that this system was flawed, but would continuously avoid any questions regarding this terrible grading system rather than fixing these issues.
Prof Ramos was awful. She seemed like she just hates her students. Her ego and pride was so much that she didn't reply to mine or anyone I've talked to emails. I was severely sick for the 1st exam and she provided no alternative solution - I was told to just accept it. This impacted my grade with terrible effect, dropping it to a C.
Where to start. Ramos is a piece of work. I don't know how she is still at CU. I did all the clicker questions in class, and she invalidated some because I was on my phone. Her grading system is convoluted and filled with contradictions, that she can't even explain herself. Never responds to emails or questions, you're on your own in this class.
Here's her grading system: Ace the final, complete 12/12 SLOs, go to each lecture, miss 3 homework, impossible to get an A. Ace the final, go to every lecture, do every homework, miss 3 SLO, impossible to get an A. Ace everything but miss 9 lectures? impossible to get an A. She acknowledges these things on the first day of class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
The grading system is fundamentally flawed leading to people getting much different grades than they deserve.
I found this class to be very easy. That doesn't detract from what the others are saying, though. If I were not in my position, I think this class would have been much more difficult due to the grading system. Mess up a little? Be prepared to drop a letter grade. Also, there was a group project. I found it easy due to a great team. But just FYI.
my one piece of advice to engineers who need to take this course is to avoid Ramos at all costs. her grading system is awful and it works for absolutely no one. lets say youve done all your assigments and have gotten 100% on all your tests; if you forgot to complete like 3 out of 16 of the prelectures, oops! your final grade is now a C.
This was a horrible class because of prof. ramos. She knows how to make a relatively straight forward class the bane of my existence. She has no idea how solidworks works. When you ask her a question she is very annoyed and never gives an answer. Would not take the class with her as the prof honestly a CA would be better to teach the class.
Took the class last spring. Ramos is very condescending and terrible at teaching, and even worse at organizing and sticking to a class structure. Exam schedule is unclear, and I didn't even know we had a final during finals week until the week before. Not having to take the final because I had an A was the only thing I liked about this class.
She uses an extremely flawed grading scale that she refuses to adjust despite numerous student complaints throughout the semester. Exams are poorly worded and confusing. It's frustrating and embarrassing that I'm paying tuition for this kind of teaching.
While I wouldn't personally agree that Dr. Ramos is completely awful, there are certainly multiple aspects that make her classes difficult to take. For me personally, I found that it was hard to interact with her as she would consistently act like it was your issue if you were confused and talking with her would be overall very demeaning.
if she is the usally the professor with open seats for a reason. do not take a class with her under any circumstances.
I wish I had seen the other ratings before it was too late. Ramos is one of the most ineffective professors I've ever had to deal with, I've been at 2 other schools. Her lectures are rushed, most of the time over the semester is taken up by the unnecessary amount of reattempt opportunities on exams. Huge waste of money, getting an A was a huge pain
She is an overall pretty good teacher. She uses a flipped classroom approach, which allows you to learn concepts at your own pace. Her labs are well structured and very helpful, and the TAs are awesome. I would definitely take CAD with her again. Be aware of the last two weeks of class, as you get hammered with work.
Gave multiple attempts on assessments. free A if you show up and try.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS RUN FAR FAR AWAY TAKE OVER THE SUMMER TAKE IN THE SPRING TAKE ANOTHER YEAR TO COMPLETE UR DEGREE BUT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER. If you signed up w/o checking RmP like me, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
She doesn't really teach much most of the class is videos for homework before labs and lectures are just repetitive of the videos even though lectures are when she takes attendance. Overall the class isn't too bad also long as you do the practice tests and labs you will do good on midterms.
I put the inspirational tag because she inspired me to pursue self-h*a*r*m. Hope you see this, Katherine
I have had this professor twice for different classes. She is consistently difficult putting most of the work on the ta's. Depending on her class her grading style is extremely difficult to get an A and the guidelines to do so are in no way transparent as she preaches. The content and her projects and grading do not align with work or understanding
Take this class with literally any other prof, her grading system is flawed and isn't the same as any other course I've taken at CU. From what I can tell the other 2023 sections are graded more like a normal engineering course with percentage points adding up to your final grade. The class includes a project that is very time consuming.
Her grading is impossible to understand and your grades on tests and projects are entirely dependent on which TA is grading your stuff. She is really rude when you talk to her in person and has no sympathy or understanding if you mess something up because of her impossibly heinous syllabus. I managed to get an A by finessing her. Take the L.
Beyond awful! Please, please, please do not take her classes if you care about learning at all (or your grades). Turned a class I would have enjoyed into a nightmare due to poor teaching style and incoherent grading criteria. Worst prof I've had at CU and can't believe she goes unchecked by the school.
Unprofessional, does not respect you as a student. Makes it difficult for students to succeed in the course, unavailable by email during finals week. Grading system that will only confuse you, you can go from A to D- after an unreliable peer evaluation at the end of the semester. She will not explain why or elaborate on such dramatic grade changes.
She shows up late to class with a full face of makeup and a coffee in her hand. Don't bother asking her questions cause she'll be very annoyed with you. You can tell you hates college students and doesn't want to be there. Most of the work is put in Ta's. Truly and awful teacher. Shame on CU for keeping her around.
Terrible teacher and at teaching. TAs were so much more helpful than her. Easy class if you can learn how to use Solidworks on your own. would definitely recommend to see if another teacher teaches it before taking this class with her.
Overall, she was a pretty decent teacher. However, she was rude and made peoples questions sound stupid. She put way too much work on her TAs and her grading scale was incredibly confusing and unnecessary. I completed everything in her class but missed two questions which dropped me a whole letter grade.
If you can, take this class with another professor. Her lectures are incredibly unhelpful and she doesn't bother actually teaching. The TA's are amazing though!
