Worst teacher ever! She expects you to remember everything on the tests. Everyone in her class right now is failing. (spring 05)
Tests have essay questions and are hard, the labs and homework are not from the book, rock lab is tricky. If you want to take Geology 101, take another instructor.
This class is very difficult and is taught way above the 100 level. The instructor is very hard to understand. Her tests are tricky and she purposely throws extra information in just to throw us off track. I was interested in the class prior to taking it with this instructor. The average test scores are very low. To me this should alert her!!!!
Aside from not teaching the material well at all, she is very unhelpful and has no sympathy whatsoever for her students. Worst instructor I've had at Green River. The book would fail her tests.

I could not believe how difficult her class was. I'm a straight "A" student, and I struggled with her class since day 1. I had to drop the class because of how horrible I was doing. Yes, do take another geology teacher.
didnt enjoy this class or the teacher for that matter she was really weird...
Besides the fact she is clearly a hippy and very wierd.. she is a horrible teacher. I have never had problems in school, and I barely passed her class. Her style of teaching is so scattered no one could follow anything. I think most of the class gave up trying after a couple weeks (summer 04) I ended up with a 1.6, my lowest grade in my life. The level she teaches is way beyond 100 level.
thought this class would have been a bit easier but...this teacher was tough. I studied my ass off and barely passed this class
Very hard and boring class, She obviously didnt care about the students and just wanted her check. Material made me bored as hell and hard to listen to her without falling asleep. I had to drop it heheh

it's hard and tough.. above all, she doesn't really care about international students although they have problem with English as second language... that's why international students don't take her class.
very knowledgeable, made class fun and topics interesting
I am an honor roll student, and this is the only class at Green River that I dropped.
I liked that she taught a lot from her own knowledge, and not so much the book. I LOVED LOVED LOVED that she gave book problems, and didn't use WAMAP. I hate WAMAP with a fiery passion, and am very glad she gave book problems. I recommend this professor.
The WORST teacher in Green River Campus. She didnt care if you were 1 minute late she would not let you take your quiz. The test were very confusing becuase of her lack of teaching. She would just skim subject to subject without connecting ideas which are very important in Geology. I would not recommend her to anyone. Horriable teacher.
This teacher is absolutely horrifying! If you ever have any questions regarding thematerial she talks about, she wil give you the run around and say "look it up in the book" not my style. Stay AWAY!
I advise people that ESL not to take her class...Lack of class discussion!
Horrible teacher!! I like geology and she made me hate. Discussions she did had no relevance to her exams. Ask her a question and she would say figure it out. I have had a 3.5 GPA all through college and her class dropped because of a 2.7. This class felt like i was a geology major and I'm not!
I don?t think she understands that a lot students really struggle with course material. I had a night class with her and it was very difficult to listen to her lecture without any sort of visual aids. I recommend people take this class, but be warned that it?s VERY HARD and you really have to be interested in Oceanography to understand a lot of it.
This class was really tough and Ms. Shaw is an equally tough grader. There were a ton of interesting topics covered and they were all covered in a way that completely made sense. Difficult class but very rewarding.
Geology 101: Incredibly tough grader. Lectures never cover all the tested material. Book IS required. Takes a lot of effort on assignments. She overestimates student interest level. If you have a hard time with the english language do NOT take this class. I bet you a dollar that she never wears her hair down for a single day in class.
I am in her hybrid oceanography class. 1 week to get syllabus. 3 weeks for reading schedules. Assigns reading material after its needed for labs. No feed back. No lectures. I am a 4. student and this is the worst science class I have taken. I'm willing to work hard, but she is unprepared and doesn't give students the tools to succeed.
Katy made the fieldtrips interesting and students must attend two out of the three that are scheduled. You must also complete a written journal with sketches and then turn in revised notes. Communication to students is on Angel, but if you want help you will need to track her down in her office. Was very helpful and friendly when I met with her.
Basically, she is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. She does not answer your questions, she gives you work that even Geology majors would struggle with, and is not a nice person. I am a great student, and I had such a difficult time in her class. Even though I studied like mad, still got a bad grade. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!!
DONT TAKE OCEANOGRAPHY WITH HER. I have no clue what shes like with Geology, beause thats what she studied, but she is not a good Oceanography teacher. You basically have to learn everything from the book by yourself because she barely lectures on the material. All of her worksheets and labs that we did in class were long and confusing.
The vast majority of the learning was from the book, which was a bit frustrating, considering how dry the book WAS. She has a real passion for rocks, which makes for a bit of an unfair environment. The 'rock quiz,' where she literally hands you rocks and says identify the type, was ridiculous. Do yourself a favor; don't take this class.
WORST TEACHER EVER.If you are a non-science major you pretty much have no hope in this class. She gives broad answers, and vague feedback and expects you to give a scientific answer. She assumes you understand the material right away and when you ask questions she doesn't answer them directly;she just stares at you like "you should have know this"
AWFUL FOR NONSCIENCE MAJORS.She expects you to be completely interested in the subject.Answers need to be scientific or you will get the ENTIRE answer wrong even though in reality you were right or on the right path(NO 1/2 cred pts.She is the harshest grader in labs and tests.Reality check:One:its a 101 class she can't expect us to know everything.
Katy is a teacher whos very passionate about geology, but she isn't that great of a TEACHER. She would pass out assignments&labs and not explain ANYTHING. I attended classes all the time and ask questions like crazy and thats the only reason I passed the class. I put in alot effort in this class&I got a 2.0 while I got 4.0s in my other 2 classes!!
Read some past reviews and it sounds like she has improved a lot. She answers questions and teaches pretty clearly. Some labsassignments are frustrating and she expects you to be an expert immediately. Most other things were pretty good. Probably wouldn't take again due to her labs and assignments. Read the book and take lecture notes.
She is a horriable teacher!! She doesn't ever explain anything, her labs are extremely difficult, she could care less if u pass the class or not. When you ask her a question she makes u wonder about it and never answers your question. She has horriable office hours and expects you to know everything better than her. We are not experts!!!
Very tough and confusing teacher, classes are dreadful to deal with and not fun. Overall switch out of you can and save yourself a massive headache.
Ms. Shaw is very nice & fun to be around. Unfortunately, her class was very difficult. If you know nothing or very little about the subject she is teaching then do not take her class, because you will be confused. The tests were hard, the labs were hard, but very little homework was assigned as long as you finished labs in class.
I don't recommend anybody taking this teacher. She is not very helpful and a tough class for a 101 credit-- I advise you to take somebody else that can actually explain and help you look for the answer to your questions. Test were really hard and labs SUCKED!!
I do not reccomend this professor at all. If you are having trouble in her class, she is not helpful. Whenever you ask a question, she rarely gives a clear answer or anything remotely helpful. The lectures are long and they way she gives the information is not clear at all. Tests are also difficult. I would choose a different professor for geol101
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is really mean and doesn't help you at all. When you ask questions she just responds with another question, then walks away. The tests are hard and include the minor details she said once. Her lectures are long and confusing, considering she doesn't even explain anything. Its hard and will drain the life out of you.
Worst class ever. No offense to katy she seems like a nice woman but she is not a very good teacher. doesn't explain anything well and expects students to know every damn mineral in every rock.
Beware of taking this class. I do NOT recommend it. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND.
While I agree that this class might be difficult, I do not think she is as "bad" of a professor these other reviews make her out to be. It is true that she doesn't give straight-forward answers to questions, but she does this to let you think about it. If you read the textbook and take notes during her lectures, you should know the answers anyways
Very thorough with the material she teaches. She gives great lectures and teaches you exactly what you need to know and what will be on exams. If you pay attention and take good notes her teaching style will be perfect for you. I found Shaw very helpful and goes the extra mile to help any students who need extra help or clarification.
Katy is passionate about geology, and that is something you can really be thankful about. She expands on the knowledge beyond the textbook. It's a tough class for a 101, honestly. If you're not up for homework and actually studying the material, you will not make it. Over half our class dropped out over the quarter, but I enjoyed it.
I have a lot of respect for Katy, however, her class was the most difficult class I have ever taken in my entire life. Many of us in the class believed that she thinks we are all future geologists, and that is why we are taking her class. Many of us were asking what happened to Geology 101, this is not intro to geology, this is super advanced.
I do agree her classes are hard. But, they are hard because she has in-class tests. This requires you to actually learn the material. Katy gives you a perfect study guide to prepare you for these tests. I've taken both her oceanography and geology class. She is absolutely wonderful! I highly suggest reading the textbook and making flashcards.
Way to difficult of a class for a 101. Tests are extremely hard, and she expects you to know EVERYTHING, even if you have no background in geology. She doesn't clearly answer questions which makes it hard to learn. Also, there isn't a single assignment that I haven't felt rushed on. Crazy class!
Challenging course, but fulfilling. Reading is very important & a must in this class. There 3 exams, plus pop quizzes, labs, & short assignments. Many of the group labs/assignments felt rushed & I had to stay late in order to finish them. Also, some questions on assignments almost required you to ask for help.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES. Katy Shaw was a very tough grader any mistake made, she would take points off. If you didn't write or explain to "her expectations" points were taken off. Also, the tests are very hard, any amount of studying barely helped, I'm not saying don't study, it's just that what you do study most likely won't be on the test.
She expects you to understand everything even after giving VERY little explanation. She answers your questions with questions and leaves you VERY confused... I don't care for her as teacher.
Expects you to remember everything she says as very high importance. Lectures aren't based on whats super important for exams but rather just a bunch of information. The way she grades asks you to go above and beyond, you lose a bunch of points over the way you worded something and she didn't understand.
I've been working at a zoo since I was 13 and teach zoo visitors a lot about our oceans, climate. I thought this would be an easy credit and prerequisite for my major. Hardest class I've ever taken. I missed a day bc of the flu and that day was a surprise midterm nobody knew about. Wouldnt let me make it up even though she never mentioned prior
She was definitely a tough grader but she was a fun and interesting teacher. The tests were challenging but everything tested on was from lecture so as long as you took notes it's fairly easy. I wish I had more science requirements to fill because I would love to take another one of her classes.
If you are looking for an easy 101 credit to meet whatever this class satisfies don't take this class i'm sure there are way easier courses available that you could take. If your dead set on taking the class my advice for you is take good notes during the lectures she throws a lot of information out, secondly never miss a lab day its a hassle.
The class is mainly lectures and reading the textbook. She teaches in a way that she expects us to already know the information, but it's only a 101 class. If you really have no interest in geology and only want a grade toward your degree, I would not take this class. Katy is a good person, she isn't rude, but the way she taught was not ideal.
If you can help it do not take any of her classes, she expects you to remember everything she says be the next day. Ex she says her fav color on Monday you should know and remember that on Tuesday but she expects that with her whole lecture. There is little to no warning about quizzes so be ready.
save yourself the trouble and avoid this class, even if its your last resort
Way to hard for a 101 class, very nice person. But in my opinion not a good teacher. When asked questions she just answers with more questions which makes for a very difficult time to learn the material. If you can take something or someone else to satisfy your science grade avoid taking her class.
Her class is way too much for Simply being a 101 class smh. Im doing running start so if I fail, they could kick me out:( I took this class on a very short notice....
She is one of the teachers that says she is there to help and will make things as clear as she can, yet has given our class an entire study guide to a test with completely irrelevant information, not to mention she does not answer your emails when you need to contact her. you need to hunt her down.
bruh she takes the longest to grade
shes a nice person but a harsh grader. exam material are mostly random, never what was on the study guide. lab work is a huge part of grade which could bring your grade up if you do bad on exams. READ your textbook if you want a good grade.
Worst class ever taken. She is a terrible prof and is a ridiculous grader. If you need to fulfill science credit DO NOT take her class it is a waste of time. She doesn't give her students resources on canvas to study the power points and you will want to drop out of her class. Good luck if you take Shaw!
Katy isnt a bad person at all. However, shes a horrible professor. We dont get our tests back to review what we did wrong. Might just be because shes lazy because it took until the last weeks of the quarter for her to put twk exams in the gradebook. So I couldnt tell if I needed to drop the class or not.
grades so hard. so much half points.
I shouldve listened to the reviews before taking this class. I gave this class the benefit of the doubt, which was a horrible move. Katy wont curve grades, but I guess shes fine with more than half her class failing. I feel like she expects us to be geology majors even though most of us take this class expecting 101 level. Do NOT take this class
She is a terrible professor. My best subject is science and I got a 2.7 in this class. Simply because I test poorly due to learning disabilities. She doesnt seem to care about her students. I was late once by 1 min and 30 seconds because I was purposely hit by a aggressive driver and had to forfeit the pop quiz. She said that wasnt a good reason.
Katy is passionate and informative, and for the most part all the information she presents lines up with the assignments. Her labs take a long time but they really help you understand the information. She grades very specifically and provides corrections. I had her class online, and every test was open note but if you studied hard enough it's easy.
Harsh grader, in which we don't even receive our exams back to tell us what we did wrong. The exams she gives us don't match the study guide. Even more, get ready to read your textbook and find stuff on the internet, cause the lectures and powerpoints she gives are practically useless. She doesn't seem to care that most of her class is failing
Literally the worst teacher I have had in my life. Constantly grades assignments based on ways she wants you to do it in her head, so you can never do anything correctly. The average grade in my class was under 60%. Steer clear ladies and gentlemen.
I shared my experience with shaw on my first rating. It was taken off from how bad of a teacher she is. I think that explains everything. She is straight-up horrible if you need the credit do any other course believe me. This class messed up my whole GPA and I was a 4.0 student who excels in science and I barely passed. RIP to anyone in her class.
She needs to be reported for how awful she is.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Hw questions are very unclear, she takes weeks to grade everything. Do not take her class.
I took Shaw's online oceanography class and it was the worst class I have had so far. Not that she is a bad person, she is actually nice and takes the time to do separate zoom meetings if you need them. However, she a super tough grader and takes weeks to grade. She is extremely strict with using outside sources and gives too many assignments.
This was probably the worst class I've ever taken. Ms. Shaw is a nice person who is passionate about what she does, however her class structure and curriculum is awful. Grading criteria is very unclear, as well as takes weeks for grades to be put in. It's near impossible to answer the questions right, and takes hours to complete assignments.
A little quirky but in a good way. There are a ton of assignments every week, along with extra lectures and readings. Homework responses need to be clear and specific. But if you work with her and follow her guidelines you should do fine. The assignments can be time consuming so dont put it off. I recommend taking this with some other lighter ones
This class is really hard to get a good grade in. I put a lot of time into every assignment I did, watched all the lecture videos, read the textbook chapter, and almost always got F's or D's on the assignments. They are long and draining, and she grades them EXTREMELY tough. Please do not take her class if you care about your GPA
Im a 3.8 gpa student and this is by far the hardest class Ive taken. Mostly cause the grading criteria is unclear, she grades harshly, and expects more than what should be expected. If you plan on taking this class be ready for hours of work each week between labs, learning summarys, and written work assignments.
I will say that Katy genuinely cares about her students and is decently helpful in a 1 on 1 setting. That being said, I would stay away. She grades very harshly, and takes weeks to do so. Instructions on assignments are very confusing, and you will spend hours of your day on one assignment alone. VERY hard class for a 101 level.
Shaw would lay everything out for you and when you did it exactly how the instructions stated to do it, you didnt do it right. She would respond to messages stating the same exact thing you werent understanding, no attempt to help you actually learn. She does not care if you succeed. I in fact reached out to higher ups because shes that awful.
My entire class last fall quarter quite literally had nothing graded in the grades on Canvas until the literal day of the final. Most of my classmates found out that same morning that they were failing. I barely passed even though I only had 1 missing assignment the whole quarter and was present daily. Study guides don't match tests so good luck.
Grading is extreme. Teacher does not organize class material in favor of student success. Students are expected to know what is not taught in class and are not given a heads up to prepare beforehand for those subjects. The teacher is unreasonable and should be corrected by higher ups to help students succeed.
I had to forfeit a pop quiz because I was
I want to start out by saying that I love Prof. Shaw as a person but she is an abhorrent grader. Taking weeks to do so, giving no constructive feedback and even if you get the right answer/give the perfect response, it's still somehow wrong. It's a great class if you actually like geology but your grades will suffer. Good luck.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. Full stop. It took until finals for hw from the 1st week to be graded, & we never got papers back. The teacher won't let you use the bathroom during tests, thinks everyone cheats, talks down to students, & has vexing and poorly worded grading criteria. No late work & you will get 0s despite doing the work.
First assignments not graded till over a month into the quarter. Very slow and picky grader. Not understanding or accommodating to conflicts for attending class or difficulty understanding the material. She depends heavily on textbook reading to cover much of the material she doesn't go over in class. This class is a GPA killer, DON'T TAKE IT.
Shaw was asked to clarify assignments/projects; would ask a question to answer that question, then would ignore the question she asked. Would use passive aggressiveness when you show frustration with an assignment or question and ask for help. Takes weeks to grade, and waited 4 weeks before grading mid-term and graded 10 labs RIGHT before final.
Shaw is a good person, she does give extra credit and has a few remakes at the end of the quarter. But her teaching style was very lecture heavy and you need to read the book. She isn't good with grading on time and is very harsh, if you got an answer right there's most likely something that isn't to her standard.
I'm a Geology major and absolutely loved her class — I took her Geo/Oceanography field trip class and loved it. She's a harsh grader but her study guides are superb and set you up for success. Geology is not an easy subject, don't know where people got the idea that it was, but Shaw makes the labs interesting and interactive.
Don't take her class! I working nonstop on tests, labs, hw, assignments, but she never graded until the end of the course! she ok if all students in her class failing! advoid her at all cost!
bad teacher
she ok if all students in her class failing! advoid her at all cost!
don't take her class
She isn't good with grading on time and is very harsh, if you got an answer right there's most likely something that isn't to her standard.
bad teacher
By far the worst class I have ever taken.
This class is one of the worst classes I have taken. The professor does everything on paper and some of my assignments were lost after turned in. She is not great at giving back assignments in enough time to review prior to exams. She does not give any feedback on any assignments and just marks down points with no explanation. Avoid!!!
She's a great person, but her method of grading and critiquing is abysmal. She's super excited about geology but terrible at explaining it and making it clear to others. This class barely feels like a 101 class, but rather a class for those who have an understanding of geology. She is not forgiving when it comes to missing work or being sick.
I didn't wear a seatbelt on the way to this class if that tells you anything. 10/10 do not recommend.
If this is a class you are just taking for credit then don't. She expects you to know a whole topic after one lecture and don't get me started on how she grades. Didn't know I was barely passing till after the withdrawal deadline as she takes forever to grade and I haven't gotten any papers back so I genuinely have no idea what I am doing wrong.
She goes through lessons extremely fast and doesn't explain enough. Most of the class is confused. Also, grading takes a long time so we don't know how we're doing until later. Be ready to teach yourself.May be she is smart for geology not for teaching especially for introduction 101 class.Don't take her class !!
This course tought me resilience… which is the only thing that was taught. She lost THREE major papers that I turned in, and wouldn't give credit. She didn't grade anything until finals week, and when she did, 3/4ths of the class realized they were failing. I went to office hours for help and she quite literally doesn't care.
If you don't add the tiniest detail on a test or paper that she barely covered, you get marked down a lot. She didn't put in grades until AFTER the 2nd midterm (2 weeks before finals mind you), and most of the class didn't know their grades until then. She doesn't give feedback and will knock down your grade quickly. If you have her, good luck!
First class I've taken. She's pretty nice, funny as well. Workload is fine. It isn't possible to get an A on an assignment because of how she grades. The lectures let you know what you need to learn but definitely need to study. Not that bad but don't reccomend. Almost cried in class once because she refused to guide me on a question I didn't get.
VERY harsh grader, no matter how hard you study answers are never good enough. Lectures in class are helpful, but you need to also read the textbook thoroughly to get the amount of depth in understanding that she is looking for. I wouldn't take this professor if you want a good grade but it's good to really understand oceanography.
