Katty Winans is the shiz. "Living in the moment" Go katty!
Really good teacher. Explains everything well and tries to make sure that everyone knows what's going on. Careful on clicker questions, she'll try to fool you which is really annoying at first, but really helpful in the end. Overall a very good teacher. "Children are little balls of entropy."
Being a new teacher, Winans has a little trouble explaining things clearly. Definitely ask questions because she will help you if she knows where you're struggling. Also, pay attention to clicker questions. They will help you.

She is a very good teacher. She tries to trick you with clicker questions which is very helpful because it makes you think. She teaches the class with Bauer, and she is a much better teacher than Bauer despite not being the official professor. She's helpful and has a great sense of humor, so she is very good to deal with.
Tries her hardest to make the difficult material more difficult, wasn't really up to giving more explanations. She would often ask if we got the material, hear a resonding 'no' but move on anyway. not my cuppa tea
winans is a really good lecturer. i understand practically everything she says in class. but her exams are impossible. i feel like no matter how much i study i can never finish on time and there are always "suprises" in the material. i'm 4.0, but i think this class is going to end up being my breaker. sfkhafsl boo exams!
She has trouble explaining the material clearly. She tries to be helpful in class when you have questions, but she isn't helpful during her review sections. She thinks that having an average test grade of 56 is where the class should be and the class as a whole is doing well on the material. She also needs to learn how to say "enthalpy" right
Hard Class! The exams seem impossible! Professor Winans can be funny, but she makes the exams impossible to do. She flies through material and many students have a hard time keeping up let alone understanding the material. Don't take this class if your not well adversed in chemistry.
Decent prof, she flies through material though and it is often hard to understand. You will end up learning most of the material on your own. Exams are pretty tough, though not impossible as some say. I would suggest attending class even if it's not perfect.
She is not a bad prof. For the tests make sure you do those practice problems from the packet. My first mistake was thinking that since all we do is review packets in class that thats all that would be on the test, little did I know that those practice problems actually show up on the test in one form or another. Just make sure you study!
I think she is definitely one of the worst teachers ive ever had. She assumes you know everything so doesnt explain it well, and she breezes through the material. Today I sat in class for 50mins on the day before an exam solving 2 problems, no chance for questions about the exam she didn't even go over the answers to the 2 questions we did do.
She goes through everything too fast and can't answer the practice problems she assigns herself. If she can do them, she can never explain what she's doing. Exams are never similar to what we do in class & practice problems are a waste of time. PS ALEKS has made the entire class near suicidal. She loves it, thinks it's hilaaarious. Good luck in 403
Very frustrating to try to learn in her class. Even during review sessions before exams, students would ask questions and she would say out right.."well I know I understand it, but I don't know how to explain it so that you all understand."
Not the best...
First maybe I should start out by saying the last test avg was a 51, which should explain how horrible of a teacher she is. She goes through hand outs so fast that its hard to catch anything not to mention understanding any of it. I learned more from one of my friends. Her grading system is WHACK. And ALEKS well thats another story.
I know a lot of people had trouble with this class this year. ALEKS was ridiculous but I don't think that they're going to continue using it. I never had any trouble understanding her. NO ONE did well on the tests but they were graded on a curve so I felt it all evened out. I almost liked the class
It seems like many people who complained about this teacher didn't want to put the hard work into chemistry. Aleks wasn't that bad, just very time consuming. If you don't have A LOT of time to put into the class, then just don't take it. Also, if you take it any way despite that, don't come on here complaining about the teacher when its your fault.
If you have a strong chem background (as I assume the last 2 posters did) this class is ok. However, Winans was incapable of introducing new material in a way that people understood. If you didn't get what she was doing and asked a ?, her answer was usually, "I understand this, but I don't know how to get you to understand." &she's a teacher why?
Winans was probably my worst teacher yet. She never taught to the test and it was very hard to do well this class. I don't think she was very encouraging and didn't care if we did well, but most of the class did very poorly on her tests. I would not recommend this teacher-any other teacher would be better.
To be fair it was her first semester of teaching, and apparently now she isn't half bad.
She has improved from what I've heard. Eager to help you understand!
Winans has a large class to teach. It would be impossible to know which ones get it and which ones need a little more explaining. If a student wants to get it and do well, he or she needs to go to office hours and ask question and student MUST read the textbook. Her job is to help you understand what you learn from the book, not babysit.
Not terribly interested in teaching... Likes to add material to tests not covered in class...
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. This class is an absolute nightmare. She has no idea how to teach and wrips through everything. If you were not taught by someone who knew how to teach chemistry effectively prior to this, you're absolutely screwed. Horrible. Avoid at all costs.
She cannot present information effectively at all. She does not test you on what she tried to teach. If you do not already know chemistry you will never learn it from her. She is rude and treats you like your an idiot. Unlike other professors who try to help you, she tries to show you shes smarter...
I didn't get the feeling she was particularly condescending. BUT she grades VERY unfairly especially considering it was an intro class andnot even full blown chemistry. We had notebook checks 2 times a semester as well as writing reflections and many other high school middle school - esque assignments Wouldnt recommend
Not very good at what she does. Has her PH.D in English, not Chemistry so not sure why she's teaching it... She pretty much just mimics what Professor Bauer does, which already is awful so you can imagine that she isn't that great herself. Exams are hard and the ones she gives you to practice off of aren't anything like the one you'll end up taking
class flies through the material. you HAVE to devote time outside of class to learning the material. she emphasized this, many times. if you are relying on her alone to teach you during lecture, you will do poorly. she tells you this. very proactive professor though.
Horrible, horrible teacher. Does not care about effort. I had a B+ in lab, didnt miss a single class, and didnt miss a single PLTL and I still got a D+. She flies through everything and couldn't care less about her students. I transferred to another school and got a B+ in chemistry so that says something. AWFUL, AWFUL PROFESSOR. Worst I ever had.
Worst professor I have ever come across. If nobody has taught you Chemistry before coming to this class, youre completely screwed, as many others have stated. If you do not come to class extremely gifted at science, you will fail. Its inevitable. Class test average was like a 50 or something. Ridiculous.
It's so boring, and sucks your life away like a dementor. Also, we're supposed to pay for the clickers for our participation grade, but they don't work so we all just wasted our money thru half the semester. Now it doesn't matter if we go to class...yay spending so much more than needed...
AWFUL PROFESSOR! She puts handout online which are supposed to help while taking notes in class but they dont. And when you ask for help, she just says that you're wrong and doesn't explain why or how. So frustrating. . And her exam questions are hard to understand. She has her phD in English, you would thinks she had good grammar she doesn't.
She is an awful teacher. She makes things seem clear and easy to understand in class (most of the time) but the tests are much harder than anything we learn in class. You also have to ALEKS, the online homework, which is such a waste of time that could be spent studying for her crazy tests - our class averages were always low, even though she scales
Literally the worst educational experience of my entire life. It is clear that Katherine Winans understands Chemistry. The problem is that she doesn't have the capability to effectively teach it.
Problems on test reflect class but multiple choice doesn't, scales tests pretty good though. Not very helpful. She uses aleks an online homework and my friend couldn't get passed on topic and if you know aleks you can't continue on without that one topic. She ended up getting an F on aleks because winans said "do your best" and sent her on her way
Dr. Winans is an alright teacher, not great. Apparently she was a lot worse.. I pity her past students. She does curve the tests, though lots of kids still fail. For people who have a good high school chemistry background, Winans is manageable. For those who don't, I'd pick a different professor.
Professor Winans seems to be a nice person outside of UNH, but honestly she does not teach in a fair manner. problems on her exams never reflect the ones given to look at at home to study from. And we never do practice problems in class, i highly recommend never taking this professor unless she has a miraculous turnaround in her teaching methods
Horrible prof. Really bad at teaching the subject. Exams are manageable, but sort of hard. Study your butt off if you want to pass. Labs are annoying (badly written). Sadly she is the only one who teaches it. Good luck to you!
she is the wrost professor i think any first year student could have to learn chem DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! unless you are some super genious that loves chem go ahead otherwise take one of the other professors.
AVOID THIS CLASS if you want to complete your major. Alot of students who had Winans ruined their GPA because of this class...and mind you these are bright kids. She babies us in class and when test time comes, none of us our ready. Nice person overall but thats not enough.
Winan's did a good job going over the simple problems. But the multiple choice questions on her exams were tricky and confusing. I got questions wrong that I truly did understand because of the way they were worded. The way she curves the grades isn't fair either because it rewarded people for failing.
Most people REALLY don't like Winans. Her exams are definitely difficult and sometimes have questions that are nothing like the ones she taught in class. However, her handouts make lecture really hard to follow and there are enough resources available to make sure you do well.
Was not helpful. Does not know how to teach. I wouldn't recommend her.
Lectures are on concepts with scant problem solving. After two Gen Chem classes w/ her I say this: If you ARE NOT a CHEM major, take any other professor. She does not offer recitation, she does not record lectures, and until Spring '11 did not offer exam retakes or extra credit. Her class avg's are well below those of other professors.
This class was very difficult. Its really making my GPA suffer.
I don't know why everyone dislikes Winans so much. She's a nice professor who is pretty good at explaining the concepts in chem 404. I took the summer course and it wasn't bad, so Idk for the school year. Many people I know liked her teaching style more than Seitz'...this lady loves pictures and color, Seitz tends to like text more for powerpoints.
Winans is really good at what she does. She seams to have taken advice from the poor comments and integrated it into her class. Exams are fair, Labs are easy and if you study you can do well. Good Teacher, very nice person.
Very nice lady, I really loved her sense of humor. She loves her students and cares. I thought the class was hard but didnt know anything about chem before. labs arent easy but do-able. Tests are fair from most people's perspectives, but I thought they were tough. She scales everything
Very nice person but a mediocre lecturer. To do well in the class it is essential to do the online homework, attend PLTL or your study group, read the textbook, and go to most lectures. Exams were fair, but some questions were difficult if you didn't do practice problems or the practice exams. Overall a not-too-difficult class as long as you try.
Winans really seemed to care about her students and did all in her power to make sure that students did well. I certainly give her credit for that. I just found it very difficult to go to lecture. She often contradicted the way "Aleks" had taught concepts, and while she was very involved with students during class, i found it hard to pay attention.
Prof Winans is a GREAT teacher! She thoroughly goes over all of the topics on each exam. Although they are difficult, she scales them to make them easy to pass. Her teaching style is really interesting so I always pay attention in her class. Although her class is tough, you will be a champion of chemistry knowledge once you finish the course.
Her lectures aren't very stimulating, but the material is presented in a clear, consistent manner. She is a fair grader and a pretty nice person overall.
She is awesome! Makes a hard subject easy to understand. Love her sense of humor! Tests are extremely fair and she has sooo many review sessions before them if you want. Also has powerpoints so you can study from them aswell. Scales tests and homework is optional
very helpful with a stunning personality ta boot
She is a great professor, in terms of her knowledge. I only have an issue with her lectures, as they put me to sleep. However, everything we learned was all on her powerpoints and she has great help sessions. Better alternative to Bauer.
she is a very nice woman and better than some of the other chem professors, however, do not take her class unless you are prepared to work hard! It is a very challenging class.
She is alright, really dry, doesn't do very helpful practice problems for exams but she does make old exams available which are helpful
I really think she did a good job teaching this class, but chemistry is something that comes easier to me than other students. She made the class interesting, I was never really bored in her lectures. She holds optional recitations for extra help which is something that I think is wonderful of her to do. I liked her.
She is a good professor, she knows what she is talking about and is willing to help and makes good jokes if you are listening. I just find her very hard to actually pay attention to for the whole thing...and I hate chem.
Kathy is really good at what she does, and appears to be much improved over the years. Exams have been hard but fair throughout the class. Lecture can be dry, but she makes jokes to make it bearable.
I really enjoyed having Professor Winans! I'll admit: I didn't love the online homework, and the exams were difficult. But besides those two issues, this professor is great! She is sweet and smart and very funny. She is a good lecturer.
She is one of the nicer professors I've had... If you put in the effort with her, she will be willing to help you. She wants to help you succeed in this class. Yes, there is a lot of course work and the labs are tedious, but she is one of the easier chemistry teachers.
Good overall teacher with a nice and funny personality.
In my opinion winans is not a good teacher at all but she is in general a good person. Going into UNH first year this was the last teacher you would want when your trying to adjust.. I was constantly stressed and did everything I could to understand but still struggled with no help
Best advice is get a tutor early. One on one. it can be expensive, but they speak with winans and she's good with helping students who go beyond the classroom and try hard. Although meeting with her out of class may not be helpful, she will point you to someone who can. Be open and honest with her. It goes a LONG way.
I definitely recommend if you want to take a summer class to get ahead, take CHM 403 with Winans. She spends the first hour teaching and the second hour answering questions and helping on homework. She gives a lot of partial credit on exams if you show work and you at least show you tried. The five weeks with her will fly by, trust me!
Professor Winans has been the most helpful professor I've had. She really wants you to do well and will bend over backwards to help you out. She is also genuinely kind an an overall great person. I would definitely recommend her class.
Winans completely changed my perspective on chemistry. I entered the class, during my first semester of college, absolutely fretting it. I hadn't taken a chemistry course for 5 years. To my surprise, Winans took a very understandable, slow approach to general chemistry. Go to class, make an effort to get to know her, and you'll be fine!
Great at presenting tough material. Helps you to practice hard concepts in class so you aren't completely lost when you are working alone. You need to go to class to have any chance at surviving. Lots of extra help offered but a LOT of online work each week.
I enjoy Katherine as a person but as a professo, not so much. Her lectures made sense and the examples were easy but when it came time for the exams and homework the questions she asked were soo hard compared to her examples. It became frustrating. Her exam questions are not very clear either.
VISIT HER OFFICE HOURS! She's an amazing person, that's teaching (for most people) a tough subject. If you try, you'll pass no problem
Dr. Winans is very helpful if you go to her office hours. She really wants everyone to succeed and she's willing to work with her students to make that happen. The class itself wasn't very hard but she does make you do a lot of homework, which is very time consuming.
Dr. Winans is an amazing professor. She is super sweet and is more than willing to help if you need it. After exams she takes a moment in the next class for deep breathing as a recognition of hard work. I would love to retake this class again and recommend her over all the other general chemistry professors.
Clear in lecture and really breaks down concepts, does practice problems in class. Weekly problem-solving session where you can do homework with her help. Knew my name by second semester. Bring her your exam after if you have any question about grading and she is quick to give points back if it's fair. Encouraging. Exams are difficult but fair.
I am not good at chemistry, but Winans is always ready to help me when I'm having trouble. She really cares when her students are struggling, and will always make time to meet them. Her exams are hard, and sapling is annoying, but she is very fair with giving people extra time to do assignments. Her lectures are also very short.
Good luck. Tests are very hard. Expect the unexpected.
She's a nice lady as everyone has said, but to really do well, you just had to have a knack for chemistry. She teaches the basic concepts and then on exams, you have to apply those to advanced problems.
She's a great lady, but a terrible professor. Almost everyone I have talked to about her says the same thing as me, "she is a nice person but awful professor." Expect to spend hours studying her notes for exams, and make sure you know how to do advanced problems. DON'T just study from previous exams, that will not help you pass.
Winans is my girl tbh. This class was basically high school chemistry but with a lot of extra math. The concepts were easy, but application wasn't always as easy. DO THE HW. Also on the first time and before/after exams we do breather kind of things just to reflect and catch up and idk it shows that she cares
Use every resource she gives you. For real do it. The online textbook isn't really necessary but do the homework, take advantage of the practice exams and if you can sign up for PLTL. She wants you to succeed and, if you take advantage of the opportunities, you will. I had a C in chem in high school and miraculously I got an A- with Kathy.
I didn't do absolutely fantastic in the class, but I love Kathy. Posts lecture slides online. Gives tons of options to improve grades through homework/extra credit.
Great person, but tough teacher. Teaches basic ideas, but questions on tests are much more advanced. Posts slide shows, but not all the slideshows have the answers to questions asked during the class.
Out of all the GenChem profs, she's by far the best. her class is hard, but she tries to make it as easy as possible. she posts lecture notes online (which was helpful being in her 8am). and out of big lectures she somehow manages to learn people's names. she's very passionate and cares about her class.
Kathy is a wonderful woman. Her CHEM403 was easier than my high school chemistry class. Would definitely take another class with her. She's very thoughtful in her lectures and always opens the class for questions or discussion. Love her.
Class was easier than high school. Tests are stressful, but you get a lot of preparation with the online homework and study group opportunities. She is so nice and approachable too. Does a lot of examples in class to help you understand the material.
Easy class until you get to the ridiculous test, don't know how people got A's.
do your online assignments and go to class. not hard if you keep up. understanding and flexible. tests aren't super hard.
Posts powerpoints w/ info, but if you don't understand the material go talk to her at office hours or to a TA. Not all of the TAs are the greatest, so choose wisely! (Stacie Stuut knows what she's doing). The best choice for chem, uses online homework programs for content reinforcement, (really awesome!) Labs can be heavy so manage time wisely.
The lectures and homework make sense, fooling you into a false sense of security- then you get to the exam and literally have no idea how to answer the questions because they are unlike anything you've learned.
Professor Winans seems like a nice professor, but her goal is to fail students with her quizzes and tests. material is completely different from what we go over in lecture, and it is almost always information that we have never seen before both in class and in her practice problems she posts.
K.W. was such an amazing professor. She gave quizzes every other week instead of exams and really helped understand chemistry. A lot of people thought the class was challenging but I thought it was a breeze and enjoyed going every class.
This class was one of the most challenging classes i've had in college so far. In order to do well in this class you really need to know the concepts and figure out Professor Winans way of wording questions. I recommend doing the PLTL groups for chem403 because they will present you with questions that would be similar to the questions she will ask
Prof. Winans was amazing. She had quizzes instead of tests and really knew how to present material. I never went to class and didn't even take PLTL, but I also took AP Chem in high school. Her study guides have questions just like the tests. Got the A- because of lab. The lab is the worst part of Chem403, awful TA's and instructor.
As a person, I really liked Prof. Winans. She seems to really care about her students. As for her class, I appreciated the biweekly quizzes rather than a couple of big tests, but the types of questions on the quizzes were like nothing she said in lecture. The lab was pretty awful - a lot of tedious "prelab" work that didn't connect with the lecture
Winans cares about her students and has office hours, but is extremely confusing. We had biweekly quizzes rather than exams, but they were impossible. If they were not curved everyone I know would have failed. She posted "review questions" but then the quiz questions were NOTHING like the review. The lab work was extremely tedious and awful.
This was one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken and not in a good way. I had to fight all the way until the end just to pass. I went to every lecture and still had awful trouble with the material. She does a good job at explaining during lecture but "quizzes" are nothing like what is done in class. Would not recommend.
Wians is a subpar teacher , you will end up teaching yourself most of the material in order to prepare for her hard quizzes in which she challenges you instead of assessing you on the material you cover in class. Prepare to be behind other classes and still have guest lectures and no reviews for quizzes. However you do get to drop 2 quizzes
She truly cares a lot about her student and it shows. However her choice to deliberately put material on quizzes that wasn't covered in class to "test us" seems unfair. Additionally the labs are horrifying with hours of unnecessary and tedious pre-lab work and labs that are unrelated to class material.
The class is pretty easy because you only have quizzes, but some of them are nothing like the review or what you learned in class. The lectures are dry and she doesn't teach it in the best way, but the concepts are not too hard. You don't have much you have to do out of class, the homework is easy.
The quizzes are a bit of a stretch from what she teaches in lecture, but they are not as awful as some make them seem. Look at the practice problems!!! If you go to class and actually read the recommended online text, you will be fine. I missed a quarter of the lectures and will end with an A. She is a really sweet lady and her class isn't bad.
The lecture material is fine, but the quizzes are ridiculously hard and completely irrelevant to anything learned in class.
Went to almost all the lectures, went to chem tutoring, studied for hours for the quizzes still would get 60's. They way she teaches makes little to no sense and a youtube video explains things better than she ever could. Ill never forget the time I was half asleep in her class and she popped a balloon in my face to demonstrate pressure.
Katherine is a great women, but her teaching skills could use some work. Her quizzes are nearly impossible and the "practice quizzes" that she provides are pointless to use because the material on the quiz is completely different. The lectures are very boring & the only good thing is two quiz grades get dropped. Without that, I wouldn't have passed
I think Prof Winans takes an extremely difficult subject matter and does a pretty good job at trying to break it down. She gives 7 quizzes throughout the semester (including the final) and drops the lowest 2 (minus the final). She is caring and available outside of class.
Dr. Winans is very kind and tries to make her lectures as fun as chemistry can be. She does so many in class examples. Study those, practice quizzes, online homeworks, and PLTL (100% recommend) and you will do fine. Hard work good grade. 6/8 quizzes count towards your grade. Lab portion is very tedious and requires lots of work, every week.
Professor Winans is a good professor with no surprises. Her grading is harsh but she provides a lot of resources for you to improve. Her lectors are slow, which is helpful if your bad at chem and boring if your good at chem. Her teaching style is clear and consistent.
Winan's is a good teacher, but her quizzes are tricky and often a few levels ahead of what we have learned in class (her way of challenging us). The labs are seriously HORRIBLE. Several hours of busy work each week and some of the TA's are disrespectful. You'll never feel more despair then at a chem lab at 6-9pm.
Very disorganized class. I feel as if its because its due to it being a general education course, however, that doesnt make it acceptable to not make a full effort to the class. There was a lack of preparation in the course for the materials covered and going to office hours did not help.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR- POORLY STRUCTURED CLASS Worked my butt off every weekend and still couldn't get above a B on any of the quizzes.
Horrible professor. Taking notes is HORRIBLE because she doesn't type out what you need to know, she puts questions on the slides and will explain how you get from point A to point B. So you need to remember what she says as she continues to lecture. I have not heard anyone say anything positive about her and I recommend taking any other professor.
Don't recommend. All classes are easy and fine. Exams are worth 70% and are difficult as hell. You'll really be out here knowing what you're doing in class and then when the test rolls around the problems are at a much higher level than what was taught. Spent hours doing work only to get the worst grades. PLTL and tutoring was helpful for me tho
Worst class I've ever taken. Winans has been on academic probation for 2 years because she fails so many students. The class is more focused on scaling grades than teaching the information. She gives 7 quizzes, scales them all by about 10 points, lets you drop 2 - and people STILL do terribly. She isn't an engaging professor. Avoid taking her class
Quizzes are around 68% of your grade. She lectures about certain things and later puts all new material on the quizzes. Overall she struggles to answers questions from students and asks us instead... if we knew, we wouldnt have asked! Often talks about nonsense in class. Overall not a horrible person but a bad professor.
I was SO disappointed in this class. I studied for 30 to 40 hours literally each week and never scored over a 70 on a quiz. She doesn't help outside of class unless you have a specific problem on sapling and will laugh at you in front of others... learned that from personal experience. Never take chem with her unless you are a genius.
I took Prof. Winans' Chem 403 class online over the summer and I found it to be incredibly easy. The class was set up well, with videos posted online before class to take notes on. I appreciate the pace of the class but the quizzes counted for 60%. She often uses breakout rooms but nobody participates usually.
CHEM 403 with Winans was definitely lecturing heavy, but she tried to incorporate sample problems into the lectures. She offers a lot of extra credit and drops the lowest 2 quiz grades. There is some work, but it's manageable. As long as you pay attention in class and ask questions you will be fine.
Labs were very long and unclear, lectures were long and boring. Only got a B because of help from others.
Wonderful professor with introductory videos before lectures. She is great if you ever need extra help as well. That being said it will not be an easy A, apply yourself and go to class. Also her extra credit may seem minimal but do it! It might make a difference in the end (it did for me).
She was really nice. Not a great professor but really tried her best to teach
Winans is so sweet and was easily my most understanding teacher during the pandemic. However, her lectures are practically word-for-word from the lecture videos she makes you watch the night before. Pre-class questions are a PAIN and you're essentially teaching yourself. She was always enthusiastic in class and overall nice, but HARD quizzes (66%).
I had Professor Winans for Chem 403 and 404. She is an great professor and clearly shows that she cares about her students. I would definitely recommend watching and taking notes on her preclass videos. So when you go to lecture it is easier just to sit back and listen/process the info, rather than taking notes frantically. Overall a great teacher.
She was easily my favorite professor but chemistry is really hard. You have to attend class and study. I feel like most of these negative reviews are from students who didnt do that. Her classes are quiz heavy and the quizzes will sometimes have problems that arent exactly like the ones done before but theyre not awful. Good professor overall.
Ive taken many chemistry classes before and have gotten very good grades and learned amazingly. This class was a joke, she wouldnt answer the questions that students asked and would say condescending things that the students around me had no idea what to do. She might be good for harder chemistry classes but not an intro class
Doesn't offer an alternative to in class lectures. The class is very quiz heavy but they are all online and open note however they are still hard. I would definitely sign up for a PLTL, its a life saver if your going to take her class.
Prof. Winans has to be the worst Professor Ive had. Shes unhelpful and her classes are long and boring. I took college level chemistry in high school and did very well in it. This course we went over the same topics but more in depth. I only got a C+ in this course. She is awful and rude.
Grade is 60% quizzes, which are usually harder than the problems done in class. Lectures are essentially the one-hour version of the pre-class videos the night before. I often left the lecture feeling like I wasted my time and couldve stayed home. High fail rate
Unless you already understand chemistry this class is going to be difficult. Her lectures were confusing and she was rarely able to answer questions. The quizzes are a waste of time since the class average seems to be a 70 every time. Also the lab is just hours of busywork every week.
The quizzes were much harder than the coursework. She could never answer questions and always asked the class to help her, but no one ever knew what we were doing.
Professor Winans is super sweet and her lectures are easy to follow. However, the lecture material does not line up with what you are quizzed on. Also, don't be fooled by the lack of exams; the quizzes are really exams. Overall I really liked her as a person but she's not a great instructor. I recommend taking your time on the homeworks.
Hands down the worst prof I had in all of my three years here. Lectures are basically her repeating what she says in the pre-class assignment videos. Gives quizzes on stuff we hardly even touch on in class. Take what you learn in class, amplify it by 200 and there you have your quiz. Grades so hard on the quizzes that it makes it almost impossible
Worst professor I've had at UNH. Hardly goes into depth in class and then gives impossible quizzes. I always think I know the material well because she hardly teaches, yet I'm getting horrible grades on quizzes. I take really good notes and go to class every day but the quizzes are extremely unfair.
The only reason she didn't get a 1 is because she responds to emails fast. I usually get pretty good grades, and I have been struggling in this class. The quizzes are the only actually weighed aspect of her class, and she doesn't teach the material on them. Don't waste your time going to class, they're just a lengthy version of the pre-class videos
She's just not good at teaching. Her lectures are very basic and then the homework and quizzes/exams are too complex. She doesn't explain things well and honestly seems not too sure about what she's saying half the time. Don't take her chem class unless you want to second guess your choice of major every day of the semester.
She literally has wrong/insufficient information on her exams. You can't answer some of the huge written questions because she doesn't give you a molecular weight or concentration to start working with
Do. Not. Take. Her. Class. Before going into Chem 404, I had a 4.0 GPA. Not that I'm almost done with her course, I will definitely not have a 4.0. I currently have a B- in the class which isn't bad, but I know a lot of others who are failing. A LOT of others. Oh and fun fact! She's on probation for failing too many people and going to class drunk.
One word: AWFUL. If you can avoid taking her class, I PROMISE you will not regret it.
She can be nice sometimes but so many people do poorly on the exams. It's almost like she HAS to find something wrong with your work. Her lectures are hard to follow, and she makes everything as hard as it could be. She puts questions on the quizzes that we have barely or never discussed/learned.
The lectures and weekly homework aren't bad, what's challenging are the quizzes, which are 60% of your grade. She lets you use your notes but it's still very challenging. The questions on the quizzes do not reflect the problems done in class; she focuses on certain things in classes but on the quizzes often puts things we covered very briefly.
While this professor was a great person, she is really not cut out for being a professor. Her lectures were difficult and hard to grasp, she did very little teaching that corresponded with the quizzes and she has been on academic probation now for almost 6 years. I understand chemistry is hard but for being a professor, she lacked teaching quality.
Winans has been on probation for god knows how long, and due to this she has completely given up on actually educating her students. She gives a few slides worth of notes and a single homework assignment, and then every other week gives a long quiz with completely unrelated impossible questions. Most people I know have come close to failing.
If you can avoid taking this class do it.
She doesn't teach and I want to cry.
Shes literally awful. Doesnt teach at all and expects you to magically know everything
This class was awful. So far she has refused to scale the quizzes despite everyone I know always scoring no higher than a 70. She also never tells us what the average is and only says the percent of people that got As, why does that matter? I am fighting for my life in the class going to all the help I can, I have a D- right now. Avoid at all costs
DO NOT TAKE CHEM WITH HER. Worst professor at UNH. If you have outside knowledge like AP chem from high-school you will be okay but if not you are screwed. She does not teach and the quizzes are nothing like what we learn in class. Everyone fails but she refuses to scale the quizzes.
She's a kind person and interested in students wellbeing. But she doesn't care at all about their grades. Lectures and homework are NEVER as difficult as the quiz. You can get an A on the homework, understand the lectures, and still fail all the quizzes. Note that the OpenStax textbook questions are somewhat closer to the quiz difficulty.
The only way to honestly pass this class and get a somewhat decent grade is practice problems. You have a quiz that is worth close to 60% of the entire class including the final. I would just stay clear from this class all together and choose another professor. The quizzes can make or break you grade, break it more than anything.
I found myself having to do a lot of extra time reteaching myself the concepts we learned in the lecture, due to her teaching being confusing. Also, while attendance is not mandatory, missing a day set me back. Her homework isn't too difficult, the interface is what makes it confusing. Her tests are the definition of not what we learned in class.
She is very nice and was very helpful when I had a deans letter, but her teaching is absolutely horrendous. She reads of the slides relies on her students to teach, and her quizzes are completely random, not based on the lectures or homeworks at all. Class averages on the biweekly quizzes are around 60 every time.
Dr. Winans is a nice person and you can tell she cares, however her teaching is horrible. I had to teach myself the entire semester. There was bi weekly quizzes that were always 10 times more difficult than the lecture and homework.
I feel like I taught myself the whole semester.
The worst teacher I have ever had does not teach, quizzes are nothing like in-class lectures, homework, or study guides. Do not take her she should not be a professor.
Notices students as individuals, is understanding of extenuating circumstances, happy to help with understanding content. Lectures were lighthearted and enjoyable.
Professor Winans is a super nice person, and very understanding and willing to work with you. She gets back to emails promptly and has been willing to work with me to make up tests when sick. However, even as an auditory learner, I didn't find this course conducive to learning the material. Overall I would not recommend this course with her.
The material during the lectures is extremely simple and easy, and it is covered at an almost annoyingly vapid and slow speed, giving you a very basic understanding of a concept. The very frequent tests then expect expertise. Getting from that basic understanding to a developed, fluid understanding is almost entirely on you. Would not recommend
Tough class - expect to do a lot of self-teaching. Lectures can be confusing, and tests don't align with what's covered. However, using resources like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook can really help fill the gaps.
She is an incredibly nice person, but never in my life have I felt like a teacher needed to be in a different line of work more. For those who say "just do the work" clearly do not understand how hard most people try to get help. It has been years since this class and it still haunts me how she is allowed to teach when she just simply cannot.AVOID.
Professor Winans is often misunderstood, but my experience has been mostly positive despite the challenges. She teaches a full year of high school chemistry in one semester, meeting just 3 times a week. This class is what you make of it—effort pays off. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! Chemistry is tough, but switching professors won't make it easier.
Tough grader. Biweekly quizzes and they often have material that was hardly taught in class. Lectures are basically just repeats of pre-class questions and videos that she posts, sometimes with a little more information but you don't really need to attend class if you understand the videos. She can be funny and does care, but not a great teacher.
I am a student who works extremely hard and does well in school, however I was failing this class and withdrew. She does not teach, all class is practice problems she makes you do on your own. Tests are impossible, nothing on what you learned in class. Don't go to office hours, she doesn't help. The class set me up for failure. She's nice though.
You have tests every other week on stuff you don't learn in class. She is on academic probation which is not fair. Went to office house to express my concerns, and she did not really help. She's nice but doesn't teach. The only kids who talk in class know what they are doing and she thinks everyone does because of them. Felt helpless in this class.
Great professor really good her reputation is unfair, I wish I could take Gen Chem with Winans all over again. Much love, XOXO.
Professor Winans is honestly a nice person and definitely wants students to do well, but unfortunately just does not have an effective teaching style. The quizzes are often extremely different from the content being "taught" and very difficult. Lectures consist of a few questions, which often go unanswered. Any learning is to be done individually.
Katherine Winans is not an awful professor but I would criticize her about not giving me and other students clear material that correlates to her biweekly quizzes. It was pretty frustrating working pretty hard to get a 68 on a quiz you think you did good on.
The students giving her bad reviews are just lazy and did not study outside of class. Coming from a very poor chemistry background in high school, the concepts learned are quite easy and straight forward. Biweekly quizzes that are related to the homework. She is very accessible outside of class, and is caring.
In general the lectures are somewhat confusing but if you take some time to unpack what she is teaching and do some out of class studying the actual work is relatively easy and manageable.
Gen chem would be hard no matter what prof, but I think Winans made it harder than others could have. She was a nice person and was willing to help outside of class/in office hours but the class overall was quite challenging and I didn't really feel like she was the best teacher. Lab assignments were also so much busywork and not that helpful.
Quizzes were...okay. Lots of them, but you got a few you could drop. Bland explanations of problems and awkward around students as she tried (and failed) to learn names. Simply unpleasant.
Loved Prof Winans despite what majority of students say.
Her lecture slides are bare and she will not demonstrate how to do the math on the board and you will only seen written math out on the pre class lectures which are followed by questions to answer. There are 7 quizzes including the final approx every two weeks but lowest two are dropped which is nice.
I took AP chem in senior year, and if I hadn't I would have had no idea what was going on. She didn't really teach, she just read off the slides. Thankfully most of it was review for me. Not sure how the class will be formatted next, as she is on academic probation and has to change it every year.
Honestly if you had her this year at least and give her a bad rating its because you did not know how to study and work for a grade and are used to being given the answers. She's really accessible and if you cannot make an exam she is helpful. You'll have to study and watch the preclass videos but you'll be okay if you do that
OMG DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES. I am such a good student always get As and Bs. I get to her class and IM FAILING. Her lectures are stupid. Her tests are IMPOSSIBLEEEE. She's on academic probation. I actually can't stress enough how much this class RECKED MY MENTAL HEALTH. I tried everything to make myself successful and it didn't work
I think the positive reviews are students who either are incredibly sheltered or convinced to give good reviews for benefits. I can guarantee to you that if you ask any person on campus about professor Winan's classes they will laugh and go "oh god, take anyone else, didn't you know she's on academic probation?" Her classes are infamous.
She is a nice person who cares about your success and is willing to help if you make an effort! I came into her chem class having little chemistry background (I took regular chem in 10th grade), and managed to do well! Quizzes are very similar to the practice quizzes she provides, and are fair - two lowest quiz scores are dropped!
I think Winans gets a bad rap since Chem 403 is usually a first sem. freshman class. I do agree that her tests are impossible to do in 45min, but I don't think that reflects her teaching. I really enjoyed her class and while I didn't do the best I learned a lot. Also take PLTL if possible, it helps a lot with solidifying material.
A terrible lecturer, often corrected by students, who doesn't seem to know what she's doing.
prepare to cry
Heard she was bad but enjoyed her class. Learned a lot over the semester, but you have to be prepared to study and work HARD. Going in I thought it would be slow and steady but there isn't lots of time between quizzes and they are heavily graded. If you're a good student, you should be A-Ok! Overall, she's only a tiny bit weird but well-meaning.
She's very nice, but I took Honors Physics and Honors Calc the same semester and got a worse grade in this chem class. Realistically the class is easy and is the same as regular high-school chem, WHICH I ONLY GOT 15 POINTS OF IN TOTAL, but this class I got c plus and b minus average for the almost weekly quizzes. Also for get about partial credit.
Nothing she said was remotely intelligible. I felt like I was tripping the whole time but nope. Also god forbid I HAVE to take a class by a teacher on academic probation for failing too many kids who can't even be in the room for our exams because of it
need to teach yourself all of the material
Winans is honestly over hated. General Chemistry I consists of a lot of pre class questions that go over the whole lesson for the next day, and in class practice problems. Her voice is kind of draining, and she isn't great at talking to people, but the class wasn't terrible. Do the practice assignments, and you'll pass easily.
Do not take this class with her you will want to end it all after
I don't know why she gets a bad rap. I personally enjoyed her as a professor. She focuses her lectures on practice, and posts the "learning" part online before the class as a video to watch. This style worked well and I did well. Her practice tests (ungraded) are MUCH harder than the actual tests. She is funny in class too, which made it bearable.
Maybe it's bc she is on academic probation, but I thought the class was pretty nice and not too hard. She drops a bunch of lowest scores in diff categories but lectures r kinda boring and I feel like doesn't rly prep enough for the quizzes she gives lol
