A very hard marker.
Hard marker, but cares for her students.
She is a great teacher. Really cares about the students, and handles the course load very well.

Hard marker, but very fair and resilient - allows for significant jump in grades as long as the effort is there. Good classes, encourages input and discussion. The more you can participate, the better her class is. Always willing to help.
Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! Easy to get along with and, oh, yes, FANTASTIC! The best in the department!
She is an amazing professor who loves to teach! She also, wants her students to feel the literature, to want to be in class! You should take her classes~
An excellent teacher!
It was the most interesting course I've ever taken. The material was engaging, the assignments were interesting (not just formal essays). She was really able to prompt great class discussions and she went out of her way to help the students. A fantastic prof!
Great prof! English isn't exactly my favorite subject, but I actually enjoyed this course! Very approachable, very fair marker, clear, and cares that her students succeed. If you have to (or want to) take an English course, Zelinsky will make it interesting.
A fair marker, really great instructor!!!!!
I had a special topics class with this prof and she was always really engaging. Very respectful towards her students and loves to keep discussions going. She was a fair marker and if you're willing to put time and effort towards your projects and essays, you should be able to get a fairly good grade.
Excellent!! Katherine is a sweet woman and a wonderful prof. Very highly recommend this class and this prof!
Katherine Zelinsky is one of the best English professors currently at the U of C, hands down. I wish she were teaching something I could actually take this fall!
This prof is lazy, it takes her days to respond to questions from email. She complains a lot of her problems to students and offers "help" but cancel on the last minute because of something. She is so disorganized, and hard to talk to her--she makes things more confusing. Overall, she needs to lighten up and start to teaching professionally.
She is awesome! So passionate and exciting... this professor knows her stuff!
Very passionate teacher, although she does seem disorganized at times. Definitely a good prof for those who want inspiration.
Very good teacher! She keeps the discussions engaging! Fair marker. Highly recommend this class!
This woman loves to go off on tangents. She'll start with one idea and make huge leaps to connect it with femininity whenever she can. Yeah, she's got some great ideas but for the most part writing pro-feminist papers is the best way to success here. She is definitely a fair marker as far as english profs go and gave lots of good feedback. ok prof.
Good professor for a first-year class, she'll give you a good sense of what professors are expecting on English papers. Classes are more like book club meetings, though participation marks can boost your grade a bit. Don't buy the textbook - most texts can be found online.
A truly kind and amazing professor. Her insights and honestly changed the way I look at things. Class is very lax, and the readings are not too hard. Overall, a great teacher and very open. Really great.
Awesome class!
Excellent Prof! I wish more professors were as clear, and genuinely interested in helping their students as she is.
Man, I am an English Major, but I still found this class to be unbearable. This professor must have recently been forced to revise her grading scheme, because it is next to impossible to do well in this class. In previous years, this class was the easiest A you would ever get, but this is no loger the case. Katherine is an smart prof, but NOT EASY!
i was not a big fan of hers. such a mess. not helpful at all.
HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND! This class used to be easy, it has gotten WAY harder. This is a huge GPA killer.
Terrible prof. Gives bad grades. You won't learn a thing, you'll just grow to hate the subject.
The prof kept me interested throughout the course. However, she tends to go off on tangents that degrade into nothingness. Slightly feminist. It is hard to get a good grade in her class.
Awesome prof! Makes the course material very interesting, she cares about the topics she teaches and takes time to know the students. Sweet lady, she is a fair marker!
Great prof- made things really interesting and facilitated great discussions. Class consisted of an easy quiz, two essays, and a group presentation. Not the easiest marker but I worked hard and did well. No textbook, just readings
I had her for the Spring Semester; she's incredibly nice and really changed my views on a lot of things. Fair grading. Her assignments are reasonable and she gives enough, if not excess time to get things done. Highly recommend her class in the spring term.
It was fine, not an easy A... if you're into feminism this is the class for you... too much work for a 200 level class and kinda boring ... spent half of the semester presenting the group projects so there was basically never a lecture to attend
Genuinely interested in furthering your knowledge of the texts and concepts covered. Class discussions were most of the lecture and helped you think of topics for essays, however they often did dive off into tangents. If you keep up on the reading, contribute to discussions and consult her about your paper topics or thesis you should be fine.
Katherine is passionate about the subjects she teaches yet she often gets too excited and carried away…when it comes to assignments I think she has huge expectations in her mind but they are not conveyed clearly. Tough marker, unreasonable expectations. Good luck.
She is ok prof!! Lecture discussions are good. Attendance is must! She is kind and very polite with people but marks hardly on papers as she expects that we suppose to know how to write well
Dr. Zelinsky is... iffy. I neither liked nor disliked her. The class was disappointing, since I really wanted to learn more about feminism (which I did, but not to the extent I'd hoped I would). Definitely would not take another course with her, but it's personal preference.
You better attend class and participate. You'll receive participation marks. She is very willing to help and tweak your project or essay so that you can succeed. Her marking is very fair and tells you exactly what she is looking or. In the end, we wrote our participation mark beside our final exam and she looks at both. if you lie, she knows...
make sure you go to class and participate. easy A if you do that.
Dr. Zelinsky is a good English prof, but her opinions are heavily reflected in the readings for the course. Don't take this course unless you have strong feminist type opinions. Otherwise the topics are boring.
This course is not actually that hard, considering other courses I've taken. The course itself was handful, I took this course in the spring and it was a lot calmer than what I heard during the year. Dr Zelinsky is a nice prof, but not very flexible to help but her mc are easy if you attend class. Marks essay rather hard, overall she's decent.
Dr Zelinsky is a great prof! if you attend class, ask questions, and engage in discussions you'll definitely do well. Katherine goes above and beyond to help students understand concepts and ideas.
At first I hated English because of high school, but after going to this English class, I really enjoy it. She makes you really look carefully at the text but understands you are in first year and this is not your future. She will go beyond and help you and will reward you if you try. Participate and become friends with her.
She was an awesome prof! Very enthusiastic and knowledgable. She would go above and beyond in analysing the texts which helped a lot when it came to assignments and tests. Not a lot of assignments and a fair marker. Needless to say I would highly recommend her to anyone. P.S. There was no essay component on the final :P
Katherine is a great prof! I've absolutely HATED English for as long as I can remember but I really enjoyed her class. She is perhaps the only English teacher i've had who has clearly explained what she expects on an essay. Her analysis of the texts makes the lectures quite enjoyable and she is a really fair marker. Definitely recommend.
Great prof. Easy A.
Zelinsky is a great prof. Her readings are mostly short stories and poems. All exams are open book which is awesome! Love her!670
I loved this prof. She has a very bubbly and fun way of being engaged with her student! My essay skills shot up because she thoroughly goes through the step by step process. She loves to hear your input in class discussions. The final was open book and super easy! The essay grading is a bit tough but I admire a good challenge! Good luck.
Very easy marker, always willing to help her students.
Professor Zelinsky is an awesome prof! Up until this class I have always hated English, but her choice of poems were amazing! By far my favourite English class ever!!
Dr. Katherine is one of the best profs i have every took a class with. Honestly, U of C is lucky to have such a prof like Zelinsky. Do your work, attend class and will my do great!!! My Best Regards,
A very forgiving prof, gave two extensions on final essay and an open book final. Always there to help, and cares deeply about student feedback. She dropped a book from our course reading since she was afraid we wouldn't like itread it. Attendance is not mandatory but takes it personally when people don't show up.
She is amazing!
Took her class in spring semester and worst decision I have ever made. Hardest grader ever on papers, I got one essay reviewed and increased my grade from a C- to a B because she poorly marked it. Expectations are unclear and you must take your time to go to office hours if you want any help. Tests were easy. Did not find her friendly or helpful.
A kind professor. However, marking is tough. She says she reviews the papers, but marks aren't great (I suggest getting it remarked). She seems quite passionate about the subject, but I think she expects too much. As for the exam, it's VERY specific. (Open book), but you literally have to reread areas and look for specific details.
Great Prof! So enthusiastic about the work and the material! She is really into feminism and equality so be ready for preaching but it's great. She marks somewhat difficult for essays but the tests are so easy. She is always more than willing to help and hear out your opinions. Would take again, thoroughly enjoyed.
Katherine is such a sweet lady! Not a great lecturer, but so accommodating and is more than willing to help her students one-on-one.
Katherine is hands down the best prof I have had in my academic career. She is kind and compassionate towards her students, and puts a lot of emotion into her work. This makes the class, readings, and work you do more memorable and well thought out. Katherine is the most understanding prof, and is willing to discuss the course load with the class
Definitely not one of the better profs at UC. Her instructions are vague and she's not good at managing her/class time. Expects certain material in papers but doesn't tell you what it is until she's done grading. Won't discuss grades after because she thinks she's always right. "Lectures" are discussions with the class. Tests focus on tiny details
Katherine is like a kindly grandmother. Very generous listener and gracious marker. Handled sensitive subjected matter and potentially inflammatory group discussion very well.
English has always been my worst subject but I loved this prof and class. Tests are SUPER EASY, I had an open book final. Participate in class, go to her office for essay help as she gives feedback. She's a tough grader on essays but I cant imagine any english prof who is not. . Loved the readings and she graded presentations pretty fairly/easily.
English has never been my strongest subject so I went in to this class anticipating that I would get a low grade. Very very nice and kind prof, a little tough on the markings for essays (but really I think it was her TA), lectures and readings are interesting and tests are easy. Had a good time in that class.
Super great professor, easy to stay engaged the entire time. No written on the final, just 50 MC questions! Marks the papers kinda tough, but gives lots of other chances to get high grades to balance it out.
Very interesting lectures if you do the readings before class. If you haven't done the readings, go to class anyways as some materials discussed is likely going to be tested. Final was an open book, with very specific questions on the readings. Papers are marked fair, try to choose a short reading with lots of content.
I really enjoyed Dr. Zelinsky's portion of the class! She was kind, approachable, and willing to help edit your essays during office hours. Her lectures were interesting too, and grading was fair. My only complaint was that the substitute prof when she went on leave halfway through the course was terrible, but it wasn't her choice.
She is nice and approachable. But she is not an easy grader as she claims! Her lectures are good
She is nice but her expectations are way too high for an intro course. She marks really hard (average on our essays was between a B- and C+) and expects you to really analyze the text you're reading as if you have a PhD in English. Probably doesn't realize that 90% of her students are not English majors and need to take her class as a prereq
I literally don't know what I could've done better. I wrote what I thought was the best essay I have ever written, (I could really relate to the topic) and I got a B-
The close reading essay was marked very harshly. I did not cram this essay and really connected it to the topic. I even asked a 300 level English TA to check my paper and he said it was great. Zelinsky thought it deserved a B-. Takes off marks for very minor things and has VERY high expectations. A class with her will drop your GPA, be wary!
Fails to realize that ENGL 201 is an intro English course for NON-ENGLISH MAJORS, meaning the majority of students in the class do not have the skills nor the desire to analyze readings with the level of expertise she expects you to have. She is really passionate about the topic but unfortunately her marking is not fair at all for an intro class
easiest class this semester, easy marker highly recommended
Her tests are really easy as long as you pay attention in class. Personally, I did not find her essay grading to be unreasonable; as long as you make a concerted effort to introduce original ideas in your persuasive essays, you'll do okay. This is coming from a left-brained person whose courses are science-dominated.
She is one of my best profs in 4 years! Extremely helpful and understanding, her essays are marked a bit tough but not unreasonably so. Tests are an easy 100% given you show up to lectures and take lots of notes. These notes will also help with the essays, so take them! Group presentation was marked easy. I don't fancy english, but this was great!
Katherine Zelinsky is a tough prof to have for English. Do not be fooled by the rating scale, as she grades papers really hard. The class average for papers were around C+ to a B-, where she claims this was by far the best work she has seen. Even though attendance is not mandatory, missing a class would jeopardize your essay writing.
She is a very hard marker, no matter how hard you try, she will find flaws
Katherine Zelinsky fails to understand that ENGL 201 is an introduction to English class. Our class average was a C+ on papers. The essay topics are ridiculous and she expects far too much from first years. She related A Doll's House to horrifying things that have left me scarred and ruined a classic for me. Her class made cower under a rock.
Zelinsky believes that everyone taking this course is an English major. Her standards for essays were ridiculously high. Her interpretation of many things we read was horrifying but A Doll's House was the worst. She changed the point of the story and no scholarly articles have been published with that view: making it difficult to understand.
Not accessible outside of class. Sub-par feedback on papers, which doesn't help one improve the low marks she hands out.
Katherine is a decent English professor, however her lectures were dry for the most part. She tended to engage students in offering their analysis on texts, but was brutally honest with your analysis. She marked pretty hard on essays, so I encourage you to visit her office hours for guidance and any questions on what she expects.
She engages with the whole class on analysing several texts. She gives very thorough and detailed feedback on our written essays and she wants us to be able to pass. Also very respectful too, like the one time she asked students to stay focused because it is distracting for her to teach if students keep on talking.
This class is like a breeze. It is a good option class. She is very easy going and is not a hard marker. This class is easy with Zelinsky
Okay so Zelinsky is definitely a solid prof, she engages u in her lectures and if u skip them you will definitely fail. Your graded on a couple things, she does give feedback on essays but its sometimes very unclear. The only thing that I was mad about was that my grade was 1% below a A- and she wasnt able to round it up.
Overall was a pretty good professor. Was very understanding and open minded. The final and multiple-choice test was pretty easy of you read the material. Essays were marked fairly but it was hard to improve your mark after the first one was handed in. Good teacher for a first-year class!
Extremely difficult to do well in her class. Both her assistance before the submission, and feedback given afterwards were extremely limited and unhelpful. Even the smallest error results in a deduction of 10% minimum. Oftentimes she went back on her own suggestions for essays, and took off marks for areas she recommended be included beforehand.
