Very organized and nice. Weekly homework but not collected. Quizes based on hw. Tests are ok. Tricky miltiple choice questions but not hard. One of my most favorite econ teachers.
She is very clear in her lectures and speaks at a pace so your hands don't burn from writing too fast. Her weekly homeworks are very helpful for the midterms and finals.
She is an excellent teacher--really cares about the class learning the material. Very helpful, but the class is very easy--too easy really because when the average is really high, one mistake will kill you.
New prof...she's teaching ECN 171 next fall, take it!!! Super easy readings, very straight-forward hw assignments that are automatic A's and midterms/finals are very straightforward, i.e. short-answer stuff, or very short essay. Lecture at times a bit boring....but she tries to make it interesting
one of the best econ professors i've ever had. is really into the subject which normally wouldn't be infectious on the class, but it was for my class. hw's are easy but because they are easy, helps you stay on top of the reading. all in all, a great teacher.
this class is pretty difficult, you need to go to every single lectures and especially read everything, lots of info but no homework, midterms and finals pretty hard
One of the best professors I've had at Davis, THE best econ professor I've ever had. You have to do your part but she makes it easy. I've never understood economics so clearly, she's great. Super nice person too.
very good professor, clear lecture, straight forward exams, and no homework. easy A
She is an awesome professor, really nice, helpful, and enthusiastic about the course. She encourages students to ask questions and even makes a point to remember each student's names. Her quizzes are super easy because it's all based on HW, and the midterms and final are very reasonable. Just understand the lecture notes and attend class. Easy A.
She is really nice, but her tests are sometimes unclear. and she uses material that is not from the readings. you HAVE to go to lecture or your grade will suffer. Very hard grader and No curves in her class. She is nice but STRICT!!!!
Katheryn Russ is a very sweet person. I enjoyed the class and I recieved an A on a midterm but a C on the final. And for some reason ended up with a B- in the class. Her tests can be tricky, but she is a nice person. Just do ALL the reading, go to ALL the classes, and go to SECTION!! Also it would be a good idea to go to office hours. Good luck!
Probably the cutest prof you'll see in UCD, she is a young professor but she has a very good teaching style. She truly cares for the students and the effectiveness of her lectures. Her 160B class wasn't easy but definitely a great class, and she does a lot to help us out with practice problems and review guides. Highly recommended.
The class had a wait-list of more than 30 ppl, and ultimately I didnt get enrolled. She was nice enough to allow me to sit in and audit the class. I went to lectures fairly regularly and her lectures are clear and straight forward. She let me take the exams too and they're very representative of her lectures. Overall a great class and a great prof.
Very good professor. cares about students. great if you want information about getting into grad school. very good class. challenging, but only because we go over so much. she doesn't try to make it tricky. reading responses are worth a large portion of grade, easy and informative. MUST go to lectures to pass class. Take this class with her!!!!
Lectures are clear, straightforward, and informative. To do well on the tests you MUST NOT MISS LECTURES . There is a lot of reading in this class for an ECN course, but she gives reading guides so you know what to look for. Tests are IDs and short essays, pretty straightforward.
This class had a lot of reading but was easy overall. Dr. Russ is strict about being there on time and you must attend class to get a good grade.
Her lectures are very straightforward. If you go to class, you will be well prepared for the exams. Her thought questions were very helpful in digesting the readings as well. She is probably one of the nicest professors on campus.
I don't know why anyone gave her a hot. She is very plain looking and modestly dressed. She made everything way way too easy, and then the final was really hard. I got 100% on the midterm, but only 56% on the final. Didn't learn ANYTHING in this class. She just writes on the board and talks. Lectures are very boring and hard to follow.
Nice lady who is young & enthuastic about the subject. Class is small with very little curve. At times dull, but topics intertwine very well. Would be wise to take ECN115B with Woo before this class. Made it very easy for my wife and I. Group research paper at the end is worthless and just gives you something else to do right b4 finals. Cool class!
Prof. Russ is a wonderfully cool person who cares about her students and makes sure that they learn. I found her lectures really interesting esp. towards the end of the quarter. There is quite a bit of reading and writing, but still cool. To the guy who posted two down, remember: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not in a fashion magazine.
If you want a fairly easy economics course, take her. I got a D on the midterm and still managed to get an A- in the class. Go over the slides and you'll do well. The homework was easy, but not helpful for the exams. I did not buy the book. I have a C average in economics so if I can get an A so can you!
Good class, exams mostly from practice exams. Study lecture notes and you should do fine. Interesting lectures and good person.
Don't major in Econ without this class. It is simply amazing. My favorite class even taken. Great material and she did a great job teaching it. The group project was the only weird thing.
Nicest teacher at UC Davis. Cares about students and does an excellent job teaching. You need to buy books to do the hw but their cheap. Finals and Midterms mirrored the Practice finals and Midterms overall great course.
Memorize the practice midterms/finals, and you're guaranteed at least a B- on tests. If you're also familiar with the lecture notes and actually put effort into the homework, you'll definitely get A's on tests. Don't slack off on the group project, even if it's only 10% of your grade! Prof Russ grades the projects herself, and she rewards hard work
Class was alright, the material was way to simple so you could mess up easily by over thinking it. As a senior this class was difficult since it relies on info learned in intro classes which hasn't been touched on in 3 yrs. It would be simple if taken after the intro classes. Russ is very nice!
Prof Russ is my best economics instructor in Davis so far. If you recite all lecture notes and homework, plus understand the practice exams, you probably are able to gain a good grade in midterm. Final is a bit trickier but still falls within a reasonable range. Never hesitate to ask her through email or OH, she is always wiling to help students!
This class requires no active engagement in class. I just copied down the notes she wrote on the chalkboard. Extremely slow paced class, but it was 8am so I was fine with that. Midterm was exceptionally easy. Final was challenging due to the volume of information. Thankfully the curve was fantastic.
You don't have to read textbook for this class but the reading can be helpful for you to understand the materials better. Overall not a hard class, but it requires you to memorize a lot of stuff to earn a good grade.
The class was actually really interesting. It was a bit hard , okay very hard, to read the blackboard though and the air conditioning in the room made it hard to hear, but she's one of the more engaging Economics professors I've had in the university. I wish she would write bigger or type in a gigantic font.
This class requires a lot of reading and understanding of Asia and its geography. You should have prior knowledge of Asia in terms of both economics and politics or it will be difficult to follow through her lectures.
This class requires prior knowledge of Asia in terms of both political, economical and historical. If you dont have this dont take the class you will be lost....
I feel like the midterm and final did not really test my overall knowledge of the economy of East Asia. The questions were very specific and detailed to the point where you really had to know specific things about it otherwise you'd wouldn't be able to answer them.
I loved Russ so much. She is extremely clear during her lectures and I thought her tests were very fair. It is a fairly easy environment to excel in. I would recommend her to anyone.
She's not a great communicator and she tries to cram too much stuff in for exams. The sweet voice is misleading because she's actually pretty cold. The style of class makes discussion sections worthless since Aplia tells you everything you need to know. Except for exam prep, which Aplia is worthless at, and she gives you no other prep materials.
Professor Russ is a fair professor. Her lectures mirror the textbook exactly, so if you don't understand the topics during class, you can catch up by reading. Exams were decent in my opinion, and once again reflect the material you find in the book. That book (by Mankiw) is your saving grace (and best study guide) for the midterms and the final.
Professor Russ is a great professor who listens to her students. Every week you must complete 2-3 online homework assignments that are pretty easy. The questions from the assignments somewhat mimic the exam but not entirely. The assignments are more math based while the exams are theoretical. USE THE ADAPTIVE TEST PREP TO STUDY FOR THE EXAMS
Professor Russ doesn't really care about her students. I asked her for help multiple times and she just responded with go to tutoring, also, the last time I emailed her for help she didn't even bother to respond. Her lectures are useless, they don't teach you much, and she gives tones of homework not being mindful of the new users of aplia.
Russ was not the best at explaining concepts in the beginning of the course but she gradually got better and I understood what we were learning. Her tests aren't too bad but she doesn't do many problems in lecture so you just have to figure it out. Her final was a lot harder though but she's helpful during office hours.
wanted to be an econ major but now I'm not sure. Professor Russ's tests were too specific and unfair, there was no curve even though the average wasn't passing, and during office hours she looked annoyed. If you don't want students asking questions, teach better. Cared more about her research than students. Avoid if u want mental and gpa stability
Very easy class. Basically all you have to do is complete the 3 online homework assignments per week, and show up to take the midterms. Didn't even attend the lectures, since all the necessary information is in the textbook, which is very well-written and easy to learn from. Tests closely matched the information in the textbook.
She was the greatest ECN professor I had so far. She talks more than what's in the exams, which I think it's especially great for ECN major students. Every time someone answers a question, she tries to remember their names. Super kind and accessible.
She has never curve whole classes, and she just let us take note every single class by her hand writing very unclearly. And all of exams are writing question. Highly not recommend this professor.
SOOOO UNFAIR AND SPECIFIC TESTS! OTHER WORKS(ONLINE HW, DISCUSSION, TOPHAT)ARE ALL FINE, BUT THE TESTS.. AVOID
Prof Russ was a great professor. You have to put some time in to fully understand the material and get a good grade, but most Econ classes are this way. Prof Russ though is very helpful and knowledgeable, I would recommend taking a class from her.
Prof. Russ is so adorable. She actually tried learning the names of the people that volunteered in a lecture hall of 200+ students. She did try to get through the whole textbook & we almost did. The HWs were online & exams were fair. Reading the book is helpful, that's what I did. I don't know if she curved since I ended up with a 94% & got an A.
Very vague professor that is horrible at conveying what she wants from students. Every assignment was extremely unclear and pointless. I would have rather taken a gender studies class over this useless asian economics class. Please do not take her. Horrible.
She is a great teacher, it is clear that she really listens to what people want to learn and adjusts for that. Homework is a bit tough just because we dont learn any excel in class. Just write the notes down and go over them before the test and youll do fine.
good luck if you end up missing one of her classes because she does not post the solutions to any practice tests and does not post any supplemental material to help you. Class website is super disorganized.
unhelpful professor that expected too much from students for the very little that she taught. tests are crazily specific with tricky all of the above, none of the above, some of the above options. spends most of class discussing material not related to the course. ends up rushing at the end and has easy one point quizzes that prevent from leaving
Great ECN1B prof. Genuinely cares about students. Some test Qs are specific, but Qs come from test bank that all students have access to prior to exam. If you go to lecture, pay attention, read study guide, and answer some adaptive test prep Qs before exam, you'll do great. She can't give all students A because of dept. policy AVG Grade must be B-
It is not that this class is inherently so hard. It is that as a class which more than half of the people take for GE credit, it is much harder than expected. Final's average was 68% even after curve. But she talks intersting and meaningful things, I would only suggest this prof if you really want to learn economics.
If you're going to have her for ECN1B, be ready to read chapters because her lectures do not go fully in depth of the chapters. For her tests, it is required to do adaptive prep tests because her tests are very similar to the adaptive prep tests on cengage. Quizes are easy because her quiz is right after notes. Honestly if you study you'll do fine.
very hard HW multiple choices question are very tricky even you memorize everything
The class isnt a easy class. I had to put in a lot of work outside to study such as reading the textbook. The hw is a nice grade boost since she drops 3 lowest ones. She also dropped the lowest midterm out of 2 which was amazing. If you put in the work and go to office hours for clarifying, you can finish with an A.
Professor Russ is a good lecture giver. She is straight forward in her lectures, but does not post any notes online so it may be difficult to stay on track when not attending class. The test are all multiple choice, but can be deceiving and confusing. There is a group project in discussion and a good amount of homework. She drops the lowest midterm
She knows the stuff and you will learn a lot from the lecture. But you need to take notes every time or you won't catch up. For exams the review material is very insufficient. TA is very helpful and there are quite a portion of easy points so passing is not a problem. I took it pass no pass but I think it may be hard to get a high letter grade.
Professor Russ was an incredibly organized lecturer and taught macro in a way that made it accessible and understandable. She did her best to learn the names of all her students, and would absolutely chat if you had any questions. I haven't had an econ prof since who was so clear and concise about the concepts.
This class is graded based on 2 exams, 1 group essay, current event posts, quizzes (very easy), and homework. Since there will be no notes posted online, so attendance is necessary. Honestly, I really learned a lot from this class. I learned how to access and analyze many data through the homework, and great knowledge of Econ history. Great class.
Professor Russ was the reason I became an Economics major. She's super nice and a great teacher.. The only downside with her is she is very strict during the exams, but if you're not trying to cheat that won't affect you at all. Grade is homework plus exams but homework is super easy and can be done super fast. Absolutely take her if you can
Easy A, but curved down.
She is really down to earth and approachable. She engaged in conversations, it didn't feel so rigid like with some professors who are very formal. Her entire class is laid out from the beginning, so it was easy to follow along. HW wasn't difficult especially since she gives you 3 chances. Easy group project for points. Final is optional. Take her.
Professor Russ really cares about her classes. The class consisted of quizzes, homework, and a couple of projects/smaller assignments. However, she drops the lowest of a few. High recommend. She makes the class worth it and tries to fit it to the student's interests.
One of the best and enjoyable classes I've taken. All exams and homework are from the book, and the lecture closely follow them -- so not a problem if you tend to doze off during class. All you need to do to get a good grade is to read the book and take good notes.
I took Prof Russ online in the fall 2020 quarter and the class was easy. I didn't attend lectures, rarely read the textbook, and got an A. I do have some prior economics knowledge though. Grade is 35% homework that is easy to get 100% on, and 40% quizzes that are also pretty simple. 5% is a group project, and there's an optional 20% final.
ECN1B was much easier than I expected. The final is optional and homework is easy if you read the textbook. MindTap A+ Test Prep helped a lot in preparing for quizzes. Dr. Russ's lectures were pulled straight from the textbook, but she was always happy to stop and answer students' questions. You can tell she enjoys economics.
Professor Russ was great! Her class was not hard at all. HW is pretty simple, no tests just 5 quizzes that are also pretty simple, optional final.
Professor Russ is very kind and gives easy to understand lectures. Eventually I stopped going because teaching myself the material from the book was easy enough. If you're on the fence about taking her class for a GE, I'd highly recommend! There is one group project, but it is very easy.
Professor Russ was very considerate this quarter. She dropped 4 homeworks and a quiz and cared a lot about adjusting the course to the current times. The quizzes really only revolved around the textbook so lecture is not mandatory; I just studied the textbook and did well. She's very genuine and cares about applying the material to the real world.
Professor Russ is the nicest professor ever! She was super considerate about everything going on and dropped our lowest quiz and multiple homeworks. The workload is super manageable and the homework is a good way to prepare for the quizzes. The final was also optional. Such a nice professor and a great class!
The course will be curved, which means you may receive a B+, not A, even if you got 90%.
Russ is very caring and enthousiastic about econ. Great explanations. Chapter notes took a while. weekly HW modules had 3 attempts each question & good feedback. One group project but depending on your TA's grading it's an easy A. Live lectures/Q&A sessions not mandatory but helpful. If you're not into econ might get tricky w/ the graph shifts :/
Amazing teacher, knows what she's talking about. HW and quizzes are easy. Only quirks are the online textbook, Cengage forces you to pay extra for the textbook which was annoying, but the book was good.
Professor Russ is very inspiring! She puts so much emotion and effort into her lectures that it really shows that she cares about what she teaches! She also cares so much for her students! If you ever have any problems be sure to talk to her and she will help work things out with you! You won't regret taking this course!
She is really nice and wants her students to learn. If you have any issues with the class and discuss them with her, she will do her best to adjust for you. You can skip class as long as you read the book and do the practice, but lectures do help. Material is real-world applicable. The only issue was that a B+ was a 93 for us.
Professor Russ is very distinguished, and covers a lot of content. Quizes and tests are lecture bases with a large emphasis on concepts, less large and nasty calculations. A good GE to gain a stronger knowledgebase on the stock market and the nations economy. Few large projects, and a lot of good content is provided in homework that helped
Such an awesome class! She is great!! TA Johannes is very helpful too! I would take her class again!
Probably the nicest prof I've ever had. Her class is also very easy.
4 hmwks, 4 quizzes (lowest of each dropped), group project/essay and final. Prof. Russ was flexible during the weird quarter and is very nice. Hmwk has tedious data/excel work but TAs guide you through it. Group project is silly but everything is graded generously. Just study the slides and pay attention. Straightforward class.
The class material has no logistic behind and all the events and times are crumbled together. People gave her a good rating because her exams used to be online. She chang her rubric this quarter making 4 quizzes online open book and final in-person closed book. In class, she only read out the ppt but the sample final need way more info than that.
It's alright honestly. Discussions helps with homework, but barely went. Final was okay, I just looked at her powerpoints and previous exams.
awful professor
Very interesting class, not difficult but much to learn. Prof is organized and the lectures are quality.
She is nice, but her lectures were long, dry, and boring. Grades are based on participation, four homework assignments, a group project, two midterms, and a final. The exam averages were around 65/100, but she refused to curve, insisting the overall class average was high due to generous grading on homework and the project - odd for an elective.
The class is pretty boring and packed with heavy content, with way too much stuff to memorize for midterms and finals. And the exams are super long and honestly feel very unreasonable. It's literally the worst Econ class I've taken so far.
Cheap Joke.
