Very hard to follow. Literally just rambles about the readings all throughout class. No discussion.
Poor teaching style. She is dry, and has a severe inability clarifying the material. Not recommended.
Atrocious professor. I missed a midterm due to medical reasons took 5 emails for her to respond. Work load is too heavy for a class of this nature. Rambles on constantly and no ideas connect. I wish I had the option of dropping.
The class overall was super easy. There was no papers, just turned in a total of 10 paragraph reading summaries over the course of the class. There is a midterm and final consisting of short essays all of which she provided a study guide with the exact questions that would be on it. However her classes are dull with a lot of reading.
VERY boring, talks about the material already read and does not really clarify, had a hard time keeping up with her, I don't really recommend to take her
Love this class, and this professor. I can see what the other raters are saying, she can be dry and boring IF YOU DO NOT READ. If you read and participate in class this is a very helpful class. She is willing to help outside of class too.
Incredibly dry, and hard to follow. Class is unstructured and uninteresting. Do not take her class.
This professor is dismissive of other's opinions that do not align with her own. Moreover, she is extremely dry and unable to relate to a student. She will twist your comments into her own wording, which is just plain rude. I highly recommend not taking her, and if I saw all the bad posts on her I would have avoided her as well.
The books are FASCINATING. Such great reads! The class...not so much. Thankfully though, as long as you do the readigns you'll be fine. I spend class daydreaming practically and got an easy A on both midterm and final. But the readings are dense, you have to really be into political thought.
so... arnold is awesome... she'll call you out if you're an idiot an make stupid comments. but hey the entire class is thinking it so she's just saying what everyone else knows. The readings weren't hard. the write ups were easy! and as long as you say a few things in class you're fine. finals areez
Love this professor and love her courses. Extremely intelligent, lectures are concise and informative. Do what you're supposed to do and you'll learn a lot.
the teacher is great! loved the class! very easy A if you attend her class. She types all her notes and posts them on D2L....classical political thought isn't interesting in general, but she tries to make it as interesting as possible. I'd recommend her.
Professor Arnold is an interesting person. She is very intelligent and passionate about her field of research, but is extrmely biased and shoots down opinions that differ from her super liberal, anti corporation ones. However, she is extremely helpful and more than happy to work with students on their papers and other work. A good professor overall
Arnold is an iterating person, her class not so much. She is very helpful and passionate about teaching. The class is all about readings(too much reading) and disscussion the next day. She will give you a study guide for the midterm and final which makes it easier to get a good grade.
Didn't really like her that much at first, but she grew on me. She's a great person and really smart. Very liberal, but I'm a conservative and you don't really learn anything from people who agree with you. Lots of work but then again these are political science college courses. If you are looking for an easy A, go take a P.E. class.
Prof. Arnold is absolutely amazing! She lectures a lot but is passionate and knowledgeable about the topics so I felt that I learned a lot from just listening. She always engages the class and asks questions. A lot of students dont do the readings so she ends up talking a lot. She responsive to emails and is always willing to talk to students.
Prof. Arnold is awesome! Super knowledgable about the topics and hasn't numerous articles and books on it. Readings are interesting and relevant and she shows great movies too. Always is available by email and outside of class. Lectures a lot but you can learn a TON from just listening to her. I wish I could take more classes with her!
Arnold's lectures are VERY dry. She HATES digressions. Reading isn't much. No research paper (thank goodness). Instead, you do only 10 1 page paragraph summaries on the reading. Exams include short answer and 1essay question. She provides study guide for midterm and final. Doesn't flood you with emails which is good. I recommend for PSC students.
Professor Arnold is one of my favorites at DePaul. Her lectures are dense and you learn so much! I hate the short quarter system, but I feel like I get a semesters worth of information in her class, while still being able to absorb everything. She is a fair grader and will help you with a re-write if you do poorly.
Prof.Arnold is clearly very well informed on the topics she teaches. I really appreciate the depth that she brings to lectures - it makes me feel like I'm at better school than DePaul! If you are not interested in actually learning about the topic than you might think her lectures are boring- but if that's the case maybe you should change majors..
She was by far the worst professor I have ever had at DePaul. I still couldn't even tell you what that class is about because if you don't come in a political science genius, you will be lost the whole time. She was rude, called people out in class, flustered ALL the time and had no idea how to smoothly run a class.
This was my second class with Arnold. I like taking her b/c there is no research paper, just 10 one-paragraph summaries, which are a piece of cake. Midterm and final= 5 short answer and one 3 paragraph essay. 6 books total were required. Reading is quite a bit, but not too much (40+ pages). Lecture can be a bit dull; don't digress, she hates it.
Dr. Arnold is one of the best professors at DePaul. If the entire Political Science department was like her DePaul would be a better place. Do the readings, work hard, and pay attention, and you will do well. Blow it off and you will not.
I agree with others on here, Dr. Arnold makes DePaul a better place. She assigns hard books, but these are high level courses. That said, she will spend the time to make the text CRYSTAL clear. I wish I could take her again but I am graduating.
An organized person's worst nightmare. Much like class, even the syllabus is a soapbox rant. Think of Alicia Silverstone in "Clueless", that is essentially the type of professor Arnold is. She constantly states how the class is beneath her, and all her time at Harvard. Only plus is the readings are great.
Without a doubt the worst professor I have had at DePaul. As someone who loves Classical Political Thought I could not stand the course. Professor Arnold is one of the least helpful and rudest professors I have taken. Her knowledge of the classical thinkers is extremely superficial and thus any deviation from her horrible notes or opinions Rudeness
Dr. Arnold is very specific in her requirements for the class. Yes, as others have said, her syllabus is long and maybe a little tedious, but it's only that way to help you pass. She really wants her students not only to pass, but to also deliver more than they expected they could. She is very helpful, and it's not impossible to get an A from her.
Arnold is hands down the best teacher I've had at DePaul. She is VERY passionate about what she teaches: political thought, immigration or human rights. If you truly pay attention during class the criteria for grading will become very clear. She is hilarious and will shut you down if you say something stupid, but you will benefit from it.
Dr. Arnold was great! Her lectures were really good, and I really learned a lot. There's definitely a lot of reading, and not of modern texts either. Be prepared to read difficult texts that have been both translated and are hundreds of years old. Overall, great class!
TBH Arnold is way overqualified for DePaul. Her classes are 5x better than anything else you'll take. She is challenging, but also clear in her teaching. She cares about her students so much and it is evident in the way that she grades and gives feedback. I recommending taking any class with her. She is brilliant.
Arnold is one of the best professors I have had at DePaul. She has such a passion for what she teaches and is incredibly gifted. Freedom & Empowerment has opened up my eyes in ways I hadn't anticipated. If you read, show up to class, participate in discussion and think deeply about the text you will succeed. Don't try and you'll fail.
Katy's great! Compared to other poli sci classes, the reading amount is not as much but it is dense! No exams in this class but there are 2 take-home papers, easy if you pay attention in class and use her class notes. She'll give you a well-rounded scope of various political systems fascism, Nazism, totalitarianism, liberalism. Highly recommended
Great person, great teacher. good at explaining abstract concepts
She's a good teacher, but not a nice person. She's rude, will call you out in class, and if you say something wrong, it's a massive transgression. She glares at people and looks at you like you're the stupidest person on earth if you don't understand something. I liked the class, but I regret taking it with her. Her attitude is a distraction.
Kathleen Arnold is an amazing teacher that pushes you to better yourself as a student. She has expanded my knowledge in immigration tremendously and I definitely recommend taking her class! She's hilarious and has the best sense of humor. She is always willing to help and answer any questions you might have. Take her class. You won't regret it!!
A wonderful professor. Challenging, and definitely difficult at times. You'll leave this class learning a hell of a lot more about not just politics, but the world itself and how governments operate in certain regards. Definitely will take again.
Professor Arnold is a brilliant women who to be quite honest is overly qualified for DePaul. She truly cares for the well being of her students and goes above and beyond to make sure that her requirements and expectations are clear. She is one of the best professors I've had at DePaul and I hope to take one of her classes again.
"Does this make sense?" - her catchphrase. Take her, she's good
Arnold is the best professor I've ever had. She makes the subject interesting and easy to learn. The material is hard though, so of course it's not an easy course. But she's there to help you along the way. Best class ever and I'd take it again if I could.
She knows she's a tough teacher, but it is not impossible to get an A from her. She might come off as having an attitude, but, at the end of the day, she will help you understand the concepts because that's all she really cares about.
I took this class hoping to learn more about politics around the world; but, all I could focus on was Professor Arnold's horrible attitude. I am not a political science major. I simply took the class to further my knowledge about the subject. BOY WAS THAT A MISTAKE. She made me feel extremely dumb. I dropped her class because it was so awful.
Good teacher. She thoroughly breaks down and explains the readings each day so if you attend class and listen you shouldn't have a problem with the material. However, she can occasionally be rather condescending and rude. Workload was nightly reading, 10 typed reading responses, a midterm, and a final.
Organization skills: Zero. Teaching skills: zero. Take this class and be prepared to learn one thing over the course of ten weeks, literally. Has no ability to teach despite her intelligence, class is incredibly frustrating and unclear. Avoid if possible.
This class is great! Only homework is occasional one page responses and a midterm/final paper. Most classes are spent watching her take notes on the readings, so you never really have to do anything! Interesting subject matter for sure.
Professor Arnold is one of my favorite professors at DePaul. I have taken two classes with her, and they have changed my life. She expects a lot from her students, but if you work hard you should be okay. I learned so much from her classes. I highly recommend taking a class with her.
Very knowledgeable, confident and intelligent. Knows what she is talking about, but makes it extremely difficult for her students to understand what she is saying. I wish she was more clear, because the material was truly interesting and important. Worked hard, participated and still had a hard time writing a Midterm paper, because I was unprepared
Never before have I had a professor allow their own political beliefs dictate the classroom as Professor Arnold has. As a liberal, I agree with many of her beliefs, but they do not have a place in the classroom. Professor Arnold openly degraded any non-liberal students, and was completely unprofessional.
Love this profesor. Either you will like her or you won't. She makes you read each assigned textbook but once you are done with the class you feel like you actually know a lot about the topics. She is very passionate with the topics she teaches. If you are interested in the topic of the class you signed up for you will succeed. If you read..
I love her. She is intense. Imm Law- There's a lot of reading. If you are a prospective Law student it is beneficial bc of familiarity with case law. Thou who shall not read, shall not succeed. Come to class. Ask questions, take notes-- she is always willing to help. She's not as intimidating as she seems. Taken 2 classes & will sign up for #3 ;D
I really wanted to like this class but i couldn't. This professor really shoves her liberal beliefs down your throat. Midterm and final were fairly easy considering she goes over it with you. There are 9 assignments you must do and visit her office hours as a required portion of your grade
Not a fan. Cool professor, but the content of the class shies completely away from political neutrality. Not very professional and academic because I'm only given one side of the coin.
Professor Arnold is overly qualified to be teaching here and if you have the chance to take a class by her TAKE IT. Her lectures are interesting and engaging beyond belief and I always walk away feeling different about the world. It's a hard class and she can be intimidating but if you want to truly learn and are ready to work, take this class.
I don't think it is fair to love or hate professor Arnold because she has several great qualities, but also several bad ones. Definitely one of the best lecturers at DePaul, but she can be overtly rude and uses methods of humiliation when students don't talk/say wrong answer. She forces you to know your stuff, which I appreciate but also dread.
My first dropped class at Depaul bc the amount of reading was ridiculous, also a tough grader on essays. I don't typically mind hard work/reading but I found myself neglecting my other classes. Her class notes are awful, she pretty much throws adjectives on a word doc and tries to elaborate but still doesn't help. DO NOT TAKE.
Kathleen Arnold is truly the best teacher I've ever had. She is extremely brilliant and the readings she assigns are amazing. I recommend taking her class to everyone. I even met someone who has taken 5 classes with her. You either love or hate her. There's a lot of readings and our final grade was made up of the midterm, final, and 10 reactions.
If you're going to law school get used to the socratic method, doing your reading and knowing what you are talking about with certainty. You will thank her for preparing you for L1. Remember that no one is going to coddle you in Law School. She is tough there is no doubt, but she will challenge you and adequately prepare for you for what's to come!
The first day of class I raised my hand to ask a question about one of the required texts and Professor Arnold made me feel stupid for it, which made me not want to raise my hand all quarter. However she truly is brilliant and knows what she's talking about. Her lectures are really interesting and thought-provoking.
Kathleen Arnold was one of the greatest professors I've had at DePaul. Her classes involve a lot of reading and challenge your ability to write concise papers that hit all the authors main points which was difficult but the class improved my writing entirely.
Professor Arnold is amazing and this class is probably the best class at DePaul. If you have even a little interest in immigration and social justice you should take this class! It is demanding and the work takes time and effort but it is well worth it. At times the class is emotionally taxing but the knowledge is worth it.
She is my favorite professor at DePaul. If you actually want to learn and value her vast knowledge on the topics she teaches you will learn so much. She will challenge you but its only because she wants you to be better. Be prepared to read and do the work but at the end of the day she will work with you outside of class and wants to engage :)))
I have Dr. Arnold right now for a PSC 231 class and went to see her during office hours. She is honestly the kindest and most intelligent professor I have had. She genuinely cares about students and is one of the best lecturers I know. She UNDERSTANDABLY is annoyed when kids either do not read, or are talking during class while she is lecturing.
Professor Arnold is a wonderful educator who genuinely cares about her students and the materials. She gives really detailed study guides that are exactly like the test and is super friendly if you ever need help and want to stop in to her office hours. The material is difficult, but I came to college to be challenged.
Professor Arnold is very mean, dry, and her lectures come be a lot better. She is easily annoyed and incredibly rude to students. Does not allow technology in class, which doesnt make sense in the 21st century. She gives long readings, and the lecture doesnt clarify the reading at all. Just be careful if you do decide to take her class.
Dr. Arnold is one of the most disrespectful professors I have ever come across. She is vague in her lectures and if you ask a question, she essentially bullies you and is visibly annoyed because she loses her train of thought easily. The work is fine, not too hard but also not easy. If you love the subject, take her. If you can avoid her? do it.
The Good: Prof. Arnold clearly knows her stuff-great political knowledge. She makes you work for everything; no spoonfeeding. The Bad: She is just not a nice person. Highly condescending. If you think she's made a mistake and you say something, she will make you feel stupid for questioning her. Unintentionally(?) discourages participation. AVOID!
Professor Arnold is amazing, as always. She's very knowledgable and really makes you think about the material she's assigning. If you're confused about anything, her lectures will pretty much clear it up. The downside is there's a lot of reading, but I find in most political science classes that will be the case.
Professor Arnold is by far one of the most intelligent political science professors at DePaul. She goes above and beyond to help her students (if you seek it) in all aspects, not just academically. While she can be OCD at times, her teaching methods are designed to help ALL her students and her passion for what she teaches goes unmatched.
I took two classes with Arnold. One was a political theory class that was super interesting. Another was immigration law. This was by far the toughest class I took in college. I worked hard for a C. She is so intelligent and does a great job sharing information with students. She likes group work, which I love.
Dr. Arnold is one of the best professors I have ever had. She takes extremely detailed notes and goes over the readings in class. She really cares about her students and gives good feedback. At first I thought this class was too difficult but she really helped me through the material. I can not express how much I appreciated Dr. Arnold.
Dr. Arnold is one of the best professors I have had the privilege of taking at DePaul University. She is intense, but deeply cares for all of her students. Her lectures are incredible, even if the reading is dense, she makes sure you understand it before tests. Dr. Arnold is why I want to be a professor.
Class was reading intensive, yet Dr. Arnold prepped students before and after for a given reading assignment.
Gives great feedback and really interesting lectures.
Professor Arnold is amazing. She is very knowledgeable about the topics she teaches and expects nothing less from her students. Be ready to read and participate only if you know what you're talking about. Besides that, she cares a lot about her students. She makes sure to address any concerns you may have.
Her class is lecture heavy, big on reading the texts and weekly writing assignments with intense feedback/grading, yet she is one of the smartest and caring professors I've had at DePaul. I had the honor of attending two of her classes, she really knows what she is talking about. If you go to class prepared, participate and listen, it will be worth
Definitely one of the smartest people I've ever met & I really enjoyed her lectures. However, the organization of her class is confusing at times & very paper heavy. She does tell you exactly what shes looking for though and I always was graded higher than I expected. She seems intimidating but is very nice and helpful if you talk to her one on one
She is truly the best professor. Her classes aren't something you should take for an "easy A", she makes us work hard, read closely, and think critically. She opens students to new ideas without forcing bias, but rather encouraging critical thought. Her classes are the best prep for law school or a phd program. She should be tenured!
I have taken a few classes with Dr. Arnold, and I can honestly say she is one of the most impactful professors I've ever had. The workload can often be tough, but it is almost always worth it. The writing assignments are awesome because they give you exactly the type of feedback that is needed to do well on the exams. Truly inspirational!
As a student not having took a philosophy or political theory course before, this was one of the toughest classes I've ever taken. Lectures are very heavy, reading is a must, and keeping up is very difficult. However, professor is very helpful if you need it outside of class but hates interruptions in class so beware.
If you are a serius student, wanting to learn, must take Profesor Arnold class. Take her class and you'd be in an Ivy league similar qulaity course. She is a GEM , a real diamond for DePaul. Be ready to challnge yourself, to really put your mind into work. She dedicates 1000% in her classes and rightfully expect a lot from students.
Dr. Arnold is a must-take professor for political science students at DePaul. She is incredibly passionate and well-versed in what she teaches. Her classes are not easy and she will definitely push you/put your knowledge to the test. Attend her office hours if you have questions or just want to chat. One of the best professors at DePaul.
If you have questions about the material, don't expect clarity from her. She actively discourages class participation/questions and her grading criteria's extremely unclear. Her lecture handouts are horribly structured and she gatekeeps her lecture materials. Easily one of the worst professors I've had. Also, it's a heavily philosophy-based course.
Constant passive aggressive comments towards students. She will make rude comments towards students. She hates disruptions, so don't use the bathroom or ask questions unless she says "any questions" which she will forget to say. Her lectures are scattered and there are no PowerPoints, just scattered bullet points. I appreciate her passion though.
I truly believe that all these bad ratings are from students who don't want to put in the effort. If you are serious about learning and getting good grades, then take here class. If you are looking for an easy A and aren't willing to read, then don't waste her time enrolling. She is an absolute inspiration. Go to office hours. Ask questions.
Professor Arnold is very lecture-heavy and explains everything in the most difficult way. She also belittles students when they ask questions when they are confused. By far the worst professor I have had in my 4 years here at DePaul. She talks the whole class, acts annoyed when people ask questions, and her D2L page is all over the place.
She is quite condescending which creates an off-putting vibe in the class. As students who are still learning the material she's been studying for years, she assumes that we have the wrong opinions when we don't grasp the idea right away. She then belittles us for having a "wrong" opinion just because we aren't immediate experts on her material.
Constantly makes passive-aggressive comments towards her students. She acts as if she is better than her students and will degrade you in front of your peers if you experience difficulty understanding a concept. Lectures are all over the place. There are plenty of other professors at DePaul who will actually support you and help you learn. Avoid!
Professor Arnold is one of the most intelligent professors I've had at DePaul, but also one of the most arrogant. She does not look at students while they are talking or asking questions, and makes dismissive faces if she disagrees or doesn't understand. Her condescending attitudes towards her students create a very hostile classroom environment.
Very rude and condescending. Save your tuition dollars and take a class with a professor who actually cares.
Anyone who thinks she is too "arrogant" doesn't have a desire to learn. If you actually try she won't punish you, but if you think you can do the bare minimum and walk out with an understanding of political theory, then yeah you might not like her. If your goal is to become a better reader, analyst, thinker, and academic then this class is for you.
Her courses are ivy league level - by far the most knowledgable prof in the department. If you are interested in political theory, her classes are a must. They are tough, but if you engage with the reading critically you will do well. I cannot stress enough how much of a gem she is; she cares about students, theory, and education deeply.
I felt my frontal lobe develop in this class. Truly the most interesting and inspiring class I have thus taken. You won't ask 'when will I use this knowledge outside the classroom?'. Arnold will radicalize your perception and I am so grateful for it. I feel lucky to have come across a professor so intelligent, you will too.
She truly is the best, highly educated. Her class is challenging; you have to put in work, and it feels like an Ivy League class. If you want to grow, take her class and truly learn from her. If you get to know her, you will find out that she is kind and awesome. Her knowledge on the topics she teaches is out of this world.
Highly recommend taking classes with Professor Arnold. She is one of the most brilliant academics at DePaul and is one of the only professors who prepared me for the challenges of law school. She writes amazing letters of recommendation and is an awesome person to have in your corner. If you are a serious student you should take her classes.
Hands down one of the best/most committed professors at DePaul.I've had the honor of taking her classes and learned immensely. They prepare you for law school, just show up and put in the work. Her feedback and assignments truly do push you to become better and more efficient and wants her students to succeed. Very caring and helpful. A true gem.
hands down the most knowledgeable professor I have ever had. deeply cares about the subjects shes teaching. uses current events to make points in her lessons, which helps understand the content and importance of the class and current events. you have to be thorough in the reactions you write every week but it'll help you understand the material.
Honestly my favorite professor i've had in the poli sci department. Sad I discovered her my senior year. She genuinely cares and is an expert in what she teaches. Very helpful if you're on the law school track. She's brilliant! Make sure to participate too.
