Prof DuVal's lectures were interesting, it was a good class, not many assignments, very straight forward and clear. Had to do write a small paragraph on weekly readings, one quiz, a paper, a midterm, and a final. Highly recommended
boring lectures, pretty straight forward about tests though. you need to go to class though, my mistake.

She is a great teacher with a good personality. There is reading every week and sometimes a paragraph, but the work is definetly managable. Recitation is interesting an enjoyable as well. The exams are fair, and follow the material taught in class, and with some studying the class is easy.
My experience with her might be slightly different than normal since she taught this class for the first time this year. There are a few kinks to work out with her method to teaching a film class but I think she is a great teacher. Her lectures are clear and insightful and she tells you everything that will be on the test beforehand. Study the IDs!
Her lectures are crystal clear and could not possibly be more straight forward. If you pay attention and care anything at all about history you should like this class. Professor DuVal is cheerful and loves her subject.
Honestly, if you've taken us history before and do the reading for recitation, you don't need to go to class. All the work is based on the readings and some key terms that she posts online.
I thought Professor DuVal was a good teacher until I got my final grade back. I was surprised to see that it was a B+ instead of an A-. 10% of my attendance grade had been deducted because I was in the hospital during one of my recitations. She sided with my TA when I asked for the points back on my attendance grade, saying that I shouldn't get the
Professor DuVal was extremely enthusiastic about the material and made the lectures easy to follow. I actually looked forward to going to class every day, but that may just be me. As long as you keep up with the material and participate in the discussion in recitation every week, you should be fine. One of the best professors I've had at UNC.
Professor DuVal is one of the nicest and smartest professors I've had. She always encourages group discussion without making it awkward and seemed passionate about American history and her students. She was great for the small seminar setting.
Professor DuVal is really passionate about what she teaches and her lectures follow what she tests you on almost exactly. Highly recommend any classes with her!
Show up to lectures and take notes, if you do that, you will be fine. Of course your TA will have a lot to do with your experience too, but DuVal gives great clear lectures.
Good lectures from a passionate teacher. I'm not a huge history fan but she managed to make it interesting.
I took HIST127 with Professor DuVal, and if you are passionate about the American Revolution and the founding of the nation, then this is the class for you. Quite a bit of reading but they are extremely interesting. Grading criteria couldn't have been clearer, just participate in discussion and you're golden. Truly one of the best professors at UNC
Let me start off by saying how much I absolutely hate history. I needed a HS credit and barely got into this class by the third lecture. I visited her office hours, and she was an amazing help. She made me enjoy history and look forward to coming to class. I'm a Business major who found HIST127 to be my favorite class this semester. 10/10 recommend
She basically outlines everything that will be on the test in lectures. If you learn all the key terms and at least have a basic understanding of the readings from recitation, it is not hard to get an A
She teaches you everything you need to know for exams, so if you pay attention and study the key terms/primary sources, you're golden! Your TA plays a big role in your grade (the paper, paragraphs and recitation) so definitely make friends with them and participate! There was an extra credit opportunity for the paper as well. Easy A if you try!!
I am now a senior, and DuVal is the professor that has impacted my time at UNC the most. She is so incredibly knowledgeable about what she teaches and is an incredible storyteller. Get to know her and she will open new doors (in the Hist Dept) for you.
Dr. DuVal is the bomb. She teaches history the way it is meant to be taught. She makes it easy to really learn the material, helping you connect the different points and experiences of people throughout history. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Solid professor. Invites the authors of the various books you need to be Special Zoom Guests, which is kind of neat.
Although the lectures were asynch, they were very engaging (coming from a person that HATES history)! You do have to keep up with the work but she makes it easy to do so. Exams were very straightforward and the assignments weren't ever too burdensome. Overall an easy A if you do the work and she is also very flexible and understanding about COVID.
Professor DuVal makes history extremely interesting and engaging and is extremely knowledgeable in her field. Even though my class was fully online, I still enjoyed watching the lectures on YouTube. She is extremely caring and understanding and the grading and tests are fair. I would recommend her to anyone.
Duval is an example of a great professor in this pandemic. Asynchronous lectures & small weekly assignments. There were two occasions where I missed deadlines & she let me turn it in with no questions asked & no penalty. Her class is interesting & the lecture videos are so clear. Take this class! I loved my time with Prof Duval this Semester.
Prof. DuVal is a very good asynchronous teacher, making well structured video lectures and assigning a few small homework assignments a week. Her course was generally pretty interesting and she is very accessible, giving great feedback. Overall, she's a very nice and knowledgeable person who wants you to pass and learn something.
I love Prof Duval! She truly wants her students to learn history & succeed in her class. I wish I could have taken her course in person and been able to interact with her more. Mainly lectures, readings, short writings, and exams. She assigns "thought pieces" where you write a stream of consciousness about the lecture topic which I loved to write
Professor DuVal was very accommodating during the pandemic. She would allow you to turn in things late sometimes! The workload is very manageable, and as long as you do ALL your work, this class should be an easy A.
One of the best professors I've ever had. This class was quite easy but I enjoyed the unique presentation of American History. I did take this class online due to covid, and all assignments were open note/book. Class may be harder in person but if you're needing a credit for a course DuVal teaches, TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Caring and nice! Passionate about what she teaches. Expectations clear and forgiving deadlines. Material felt applicable irl.
Professor DuVal is amazing and was by far my favorite professor this semester. She was super caring and understanding during COVID times and was easily accessible outside of class. The class was asynchronous with a few recitations to discuss readings. Reflections and paragraphs were graded by the TA. Final exam/paper and no midterm. Lots of reading
Very interesting class. Professor DuVal was very responsive to emails (responded to all mine within 2 min). Easy A if you do the reading and homework. Class was asynchronous in fall 2020.
I really appreciate that professor Duval made everything less stressful during the pandemic. Her lectures were amazing which didnt make me fall asleep. The most difficult part of the course is the exams which ask to write down historical significances of some term IDs in only 50 mins. Your grades depend on your TA.
LOVE LOVE LOVED her as my hist 127 professor, thinking of taking another class with her regardless of the content. She gave super straightforward lectures and told us when we needed to take down notes on what's important. Tests super straightforward as well, there were 2 midterms and a final and they were all really easy if you just took notes.
Solid class, very interesting lectures, and she was very understanding. The workload is slight and the recitation had an asynchronous option if you couldn't make it that got you full participation credit! Great professor and a good choice if you are looking for an interesting class that is low stress.
Super easy class and great choice to knock out gen eds. She's so sweet and her lectures / the class is extremely organized. Tests are easy as long as you learn the term IDs and the homework each week doesn't take long to complete.
Duval's lectures are very clear and interesting. As long as you take good notes and pay attention you will probably do fine. There are a ton of readings though and you do need to have an idea of them to participate in recitation and do as well as possible on exams. Grading was a bit tough as well. Besides that, I loved going to class.
A great and easy gen ed course to take. She posts her lectures online so you don't have to show up to class if you don't want to. Her quizzes, exams, and weekly asynchronous assignments are easy too. She makes the course fun and you will learn stuff even if it's not what you want to do. The weekly assignments and the exams are consistent. Easy A.
Lectures every day; attendance wasnt mandatory so I just stopped going. Attendance is graded for recitation, which just consists of easy discussions about the readings. TAs graded some assignments really tough (four paragraphs throughout semester). Very low workload. Was kind of weird to learn Native history from a random white lady
Professor DuVal is a great lecturer and made it clear what we needed to take notes on. You definitely need to read. We were graded on writing assignments, recitation participation, midterm, and final, but the expectations on the writing assignments were clear. Everything is graded by your TA. Prof. DuVal responded super quickly to emails.
Prof. Duval is a GREAT instructor, and her passion for US history made lectures really enjoyable! Grading is based on your TA, but all of the assignments were straightforward and not super time-consuming.
Dr. Duval's lectures are super interesting and the class itself is not hard at all. The tests are open note and are conducted via sakai. The paragraphs and though pieces are not bad either, albeit your grade depends on the TA. I would recommend going to recitation as opposed to doing the worksheets since it is much easier and less time consuming.
High key never showed up to class after the first day and only went to recitation sections. My TA was extremely chill! Exams are open note and extremely easy at that. Very easy class for crossing of gen eds
Prof DuVal is my favorite prof after my first sem. Her lectures were usually engaging. She is very knowledgeable and sweet. I tended to do better on the papers she graded vs the TA. The class felt a little front heavy to me and got lighter as time went on. Very clear guidelines especially for grading midterms and final. Highly recommend for gen ed
Although I am into history, I loved this class. It was extremely engaging and her lectures never once got boring. If you need a gen ED fulfilled, definitely take this course. I was very pleased with the outcome.
Dr. Duval is very smart, and she's clearly passionate about the content. Interesting lectures, and she was flexible about whether you came in person to class or if you just watched the recordings at a later date, which is really nice.
Dr. Duval is a great professor who is knowledgeable and entertaining in lectures. The lectures can be a bit dull sometimes because lots of the information is a refresh of APUSH, but still great. I would say if you need to take a history class, take one by her. Recitations are discussion based and there are weekly quizzes.
Omg. Professor DuVal might be the best professor I have had at UNC. Her lectures are so interesting. The only difficult part is that although attendance is not mandatory, you have to go to class to take notes. Her slides are just key terms and then she explains them in class. Other than that, I can't recommend this class enough.
Professor Duval is a great history professor and gives some of the most engaging lectures. HIST 127 can have a decent amount of reading at times, but if you stay consistent you can get an A. Overall, a great professor who even ended up making the final optional for the class as she anticipated we would be busy with other classes...
Dr. DuVal has been one of the most caring professors I've ever had at UNC. She is so reasonable and understands that we have so much work and other classes to worry about. Definitely take HIST 127 with her if you need a gen ed credit! Her class was super interesting and important for general U.S. history knowledge, so I definitely recommend her!
2 midterms (take home), 1 final (optional if you are happy with your grade), monthly reflections around 500 words (put some effort in =receive 100), 2 short essays (graded by TA's; go to office hours for direction); class is built for you to succeed. Genuinely enjoyed going to class. If you take notes each lecture you will get an A in the class!!
I absolutely loved Prof Duval's class, the content was interesting and the class itself was pretty easy! As long as you attend lecture fairly regularly and do the weekly assignments, you'll get an A. Prof Duval also really cares about her students and is easily accessible. I highly recommend this for a Gen Ed or history credit!
Prof. Duval was an amazing professor in every regard. She was accommodating, inspirational and just a caring person. Her lectures actually made me want to attend class and pay attention. Exams were pretty straightforward as long as you showed up to class or did the readings. Seriously the best way to end my time at Carolina.
This class was great, the lectures were very engaging and I would recommend this class to anyone.
She is a Goddess among human professors - She will let you know what is lenient really means, and her measure of making the final optional really makes me surprised but happy. It saved me from the high pressure of a heavy workload in these final weeks. Thanks, professor!
Prof. DuVal is amazing! She cares about students and the subject and lectures were super interesting! We had a few short but easy writing assignments, along with reading the ebook textbook and doing easy quizzes for each chapter(can be done until 100%). There were two online open note midterms. The final was optional if you're fine with your grade!
I took this class expecting to not pay attention and just get gen ed credit, but Professor Duval teaches really interesting content and I found the class to be super informative. Recitation can be a drag sometimes in this class, but it's an easy way to get gen ed credit and learn a lot. Would recommend!
Loved Professor Duval and I had a great TA-- her lectures are like stories and makes the content interesting!
Not the worst gen ed every, but definitely don't take HIST 110. None of the lectures are recorded and none of the slideshows have any written content, meaning all of your notes come from listening and you're screwed if you miss class. TAs grade way too hard for no reason. A lot of reading but I guess it could be manageable.
Professor Duval is a great teacher! Her tests are pretty straightforward and doesn't give a lot of homework. She talks a lot in her lectures, but write the key terms on the board so we know what to take notes on. Homework consists of 1-3 short 3 page readings and a paragraph every other week. Just make sure to attend your recitation.
I have taken Professor DuVal for both Hist 110 and 127 and can say that 127 was a breeze in comparison to 110. The TA's for 110 grade unnecessarily hard with no feedback. Also 110 requires attendance of 2 extracurricular events outside of class.
Professor Duval is great and HIST/AMST 110 is a pretty easy A as far as gen eds go. Go to lecture and recitation do the readings and homework and you'll be perfectly fine. Allows cheat sheets for exams that can fit a lot of content on them. Also an engaging lecturer who is clearly passionate about the subject.
Easy as long as you show up and take notes during the lecture. Attendance not required but powerpoints don't include info. Outside of class you write 3 paragraph questions, read a book, a couple short readings every week, attend two extracurricular activities, and some reflections. All are very manageable. Notes allowed on midterms and final.
She is a very caring person and a great lecturer, though the course feels like a 16-week sprint given how much content there is to cover. Prof DuVal herself doesn't grade anything, so your grade is entirely based on the harshness of your TA. I loved DuVal and the lectures, but my TA was way too strict on menial assignments making it less enjoyable.
If you have the chance to take your 398 with Professor DuVal, take it! I had a great time and felt supported as I created such a long research paper. She is very kind and gives great feedback. She definitely wants you to succeed.
I think the structure of this class was great! But if you are not someone, like myself, who can learn during lectures based on verbal presentations and no words on lecture slides to take note of, I suggest you do NOT take HIST/AMST 110 with Prof DuVal. Your participation grade in the course comes from your participation in recitation.
Not an easy gen ed. You have to keep up with so much material and the course is very fast paced. She does not have notes on her slides, so you have to go to lectures. Nothing is recorded. You have to be fully prepared to participate at each recitation for the participation grade. Many heavy readings. There are 2 midterms and a cumulative final.
This class is interesting if you like American History, but it may be confusing without prior knowledge. There are 3 graded paragraphs and 2 in-person midterms that can be tricky and are mostly short answers and a cumulative final that is NOT optional. While lecture attendance is optional the tests are mostly based on information from lecture.
Such an amazing professor! Lectures are easy to follow, well-organized, and go with the readings. Papers grades are determined by TAs but the instructions are very clear. If you pay attention, you will do well.
Kathleen Duval was an amazing professor for Hist 127. I have never had such engaging and interesting lectures for a history class, and she is overall just a very kind soul. TAs grade most of your assignments and tests, but their grading is fair and well-explained. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures, but mandatory for recitation.
Good class, kind of have lots of busy work but its doable and very easy to make a good grade. Would recommend to anyone.
Prof. DuVal is a very kind and engaging professor. The lectures were quite good and explanatory. Moreover, she was very flexible, and although the class included many little tasks for homework, it was all doable and graded leniently. I recommend.
Class was very easy and the final was optional.
Going to class was really important for this course but somehow wasn't a hassle. Lectures were very well structured and accessible, while exams were straightforward and easy to prepare for . Would 100% recommend.
If you go to class and take notes, it's basically impossible to get below an A- on any papers/reflections/exams. Lectures were very engaging and DuVal was extremely clear with exam expectations. Also, if you took APUSH, this class will be a breeze.
Great easy credit for the history minor! We had two midterms. You MUST take the final exam now (there used to be no final in the past b/c of COVID so ignore the outdated reviews). Professor DuVal was super caring and always helped to accommodate people. All HW assignments could be taken till 100%.
Prof DuVal is engaging and kind. Her lectures are entertaining and exclude tedious detail - this class really just hits the surface. There are two midterms with cheat sheets but questions are based on lectures and comparable to study guides. The workload is completely manageable. Great focus capacity option!
Prof DuVal is great, and so nice! There is a lot of reading for this class but all of it is interesting, as are lectures. There are a bunch of small assignments and a final project, but it was all very doable, and there was no midterm. I'd definitely recommend if you like the American Revolution, but it's also just a good/interesting class to take!
No notes on slides so you must come to class- lectures are told in a story. participation counts in recitation, HW every week, reflections/paragraph questions every other week. it moves at a fast pace, but still manageable. If you get a nice TA you're golden. Overall great class but kinda of difficult! Also get to use ALL past cheat sheets on final
Was a little overwhelmed with the workload in the beginning, but it stays the same each week so its fairly manageable. Wasn't really interested in history at all before this class but she had me intrigued with her lectures. Your TA will determine your grade and attendance is mandatory for recitations.
Duvals lectures were super engaging. She is passionate about the subject and it shows. The reading was often a bit more dense, but for the most part was entertaining and manageable - just needed to be done in small amounts. Grading/TA graders were pretty easy and the required work was very appropriate and manageable for the course and its level.
A great and knowledgeable professor. TA grades most things so you will have to get lucky. Overall, a pretty easy and chill class. You are supposed to show up everyday and talk to get a good grade, but I didn't speak once and still got an A so don't let that dissuade you. Definitely recommend taking this class!
Her lectures are very interesting and she is incredibly intelligent and versed in her field. She definitely focuses on some topics more than others but offers an interesting insight into niche topics not touched on in general US history. You have to keep up with your work but none of it is particularly difficult.
WONDERFUL PROF!!! Could not recommend her more. Class is amazing, work is super simple, recitations are easy enough to participate in. Grading is fair and gives good feedback. Lectures are very interesting, and exams are so easy- cheat sheets allowed. It is mostly just interpreting events and how they impacted the world. Take this class!!!
She is a very nice woman. very manageable class. The curriculum is interesting. Great lectures and connections to UNC were fun and engaging. I never thought about history in such an indepth and world-opening view as I do now. She cares about her students and works to make their lives easier during stressful times.
Such a kind and caring Professor. 2 midterms worth 30% combined and you get a cheat sheet for each and unlimited “primary source” documents which make the tests easy. 3 cheat sheets for the 20% final. Reflection graded on completion and paragraph questions actually graded but not hard. Put in a tiny bit of effort and you will succeed. Best prof.
Great professor, great TAs. Not a terrible class, lectures were optional. Lectures were important and interesting. I would definitely take again. She was very clear about course expectations and how to complete assignments / how midterms and finals looked.
DO NOT TAKE AS GEN ED. I am not a history major, took this class because of high ratings. My TA is so mean, but that might be bad luck. I have never done more work for a class, and the fact that I am taking as a Gen Ed makes it even worse. Not only is it a ton of reading, there is an insane amount of busywork to go along with it.
I heard great things about this class, but wow, was I in for a shock. As a history major, this is the most busy work and reading I have EVER had for a class. There is a final project, final exam, and pop quiz in almost every class. Missing class is also impossible unless university approved. This is one of the worst history classes I have taken.
Her lectures are incredible, and she is so organized it makes it easy to follow. You must go to class because she doesn't just read from the slides, but if you took APUSH it's similar. Lots of little assignments so a good grade is easy, and exams get a notes sheet and are term identification. Recitation is mandatory and TAs grade everything.
Professor DuVal is amazing professor and amazing person. She really cares about her students and the material she teaches. She provides many resources for students and has various activities to help students engage with content. She's really accessible and gives good constructive feedback. She also really wants to prepare students for the future.
There was WAY too much work for this class to be a 200 level. Readings and a written assignment due every class, reflections due weekly, reading quizzes every day, and a final project and final. The lectures themselves were fine and Duval is a nice woman but the workload was completely too much. Only take if love the subject.
The most collaborative professor I have interacted with so far at UNC! She is always available to discuss anything related to the class, gives good feedback, and is very understanding. This class is a very easy, but also interesting, first year seminar and you will gain a lot of perspective and historical knowledge without being slammed with work.
I learned SO much, and the lectures were very interesting most of the time. There was a good bit of reading that you NEED to do because of the pop quizzes. If you did the reading, they should be easy. The class has a lot of short-form writing that is very manageable. All of the TAs and graders are so kind. Take this class!
This class was very interesting. There was a bunch of busy work, but it was manageable. Do your readings for quizzes! Grading depends on TA (mind was kinda iffy). Final was open note. Highly recommend participating in class because if you participate often Prof DuVal will bump your grade up. Prof DuVal is a very kind and understanding prof!
Went into this class unsure about what to think and not liking history very much in general but prof Duval made the class pretty engaging. Lots of guest speakers that you were supposed to read articles about their work prior to the class but I forgot sometimes and was fine. There is a few papers and a couple group projects but great class overall.
I don't recommend taking this class unless you are a history major/minor. There are pop quizzes, worksheets to go with readings, written reflections, a final project, and a no longer optional final (open note at least). The lectures can be hard to follow unless you're consistently on task. An A is probable if you always put your best work forward.
Although I enjoyed this class greatly and received an A as my final grader, Professor Duval is one of the rudest professors I have ever encountered. I would not recommend speaking to her 1-1 unless you are one of her favorite students. The papers were very easy to complete as well as the final project and the exam was open note
A great professor. Some things that people write on here devalue degrees from UNC. Who's more qualified to say what workload is appropriate for a college history class? A professional historian with a Pulitzer Prize, or a teenager fresh from high school? Class recommended to serious students who came to UNC to learn something.
I was going through some scary, complicated health issues that messed me up in my final semester and she had the grace and patience to give me extensions to finish the class so that I could graduate on time. She is a very kind person and I'll always remember her.
