She is incredibly disorganized and her notes look like chicken scratch. Avoid.
She is the WORST PROFESSOR of all time. This woman's been teaching for years and she still can't speak without the notes right under her nose. She is boring and monotonous. Some people got so pissed off listening to her that they stopped taking notes.
This woman works for the devil. the avg on our first exam was 60 and she said she wouldnt curve. This is the worst torture ever.. monotonous and stupid... Water torture is almost as bad as this class
She is a horrible proffessor. Everyone elses comments are dead on. She flies through powerpoint slides faster than even the fastest note-takers can write them and she refuses to post them online. We don't even hoave time understand what we're writing. She

Ugh.. Horwath is horrible! I had her for Cell Bio Lab, and I wanted to put her in a centrifuge :( Her tests were IMPOSSIBLE, she was of no help in lab, HORRIBLE handwriting. Only thing that saved the class was a great TA. Don't take any classes w/ Horwath
This professor is extremely monotonous and boring. She practically reads straight from the text book and provides no unique teaching ability; anything learned is self-learned. Do NOT take her Cell Biology class.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS WOMAN! She really is very unhelpful, uncreative, and poorly organized. How she has a carear as a teacher is beyond me. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.
horrible person, I dropped the class after 2 weeks because she was getting worse and worse. Avoid her at all costs!
animal physiology sounds interesting right? yeah it sucked hardcore, horwath is the worst teacher that i have ever experienced, avoid her at all costs, trust me. i did fine in the class but learned nothing, stupid chicken scratch
She taught a section of my cell bio class and the attendence went down 75%. No teaching ability, she just reads slides in an annoying, monotone, high-pitched voice. Test was fairly easy, but not on material she emphasized.
HOOOOORRRRIBLE PROFESSOR... you might TRY to stay in her class when she lectures, but she'll bore you so much that she forces you to leave... like the last guy said, our attendance in class seriously went down... she has NO CLUE what she's teaching
Deceiving class name-animal physiology.Every diagram is from a molecular bio textbook!Relentless neverending slides so you're madly copying everything down & not listening to what shes trying to teach & she gives you no other access to her slides. Awful.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS...
Horwath sounds exactly like Karen from Will and Grace. She is the worst teacher ever, somehow finds a way to make an interesting subject completely boring, the lable from my water bottle is more interesting. Her essay tests dont reflect knowledge, unproportional amt of pts taken off for small mistakes
she has good intentions, but she's a horrible teacher. what kind of nut gives essay tests for a biology course? her typos and loss for words makes her appear unknowledgable about the subject. avoid this class at all costs! if it's a requirement, take it at another school!!!
THIS WOMAN IS A JOKE! Not only does she not know the material, she is completely unprofessional in presentation. "The blood gets slopped off" in ref. to the menstrual cycle??? WTF? She spends a month on most of the systems, and 5 minutes of the final lecture on reproductive. Way to ruin an interesting topic. Read the book and pray she gets fired.
I signed up for this class last year. I dropped the class after 2 weeks, in the hope that when I need to take it next semester, there's a different professor who will be teaching it. I'm out of luck. Not sure if it's offered @ BCC.
I've seen horrors... horrors that you've seen. It's impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror. Horror has a face... and you must make a friend of horror.
Not the best voice. She refers to her notes too much. Otherwise, very interesting class and I learned a lot. If you only print out the notes and don't attend, you can get a B easy. If you go to class, then you'll get higher! She tries to answer questions honestly. I liked the class.
Easy class, I got an A-, just make sure you read her lecture notes she drops hints on what the essay questions are going to be. I never went to class and did well on all the exams.
Don't take a course taught by this woman
She is not as bad as people think she is a very lenient grader. If u study the material you will get a good grade, if you are lazy you will fail. its that simple, the ones who complain abt her are people who did not want to put in work for her class.
Took Animal Phys & Developmental bio in the same semester with Dr. Horwath. It wasn't too bad. All essay exams but she's a very lenient grader. I had to refer to the book a lot because her slides/explanations were unclear sometimes. Test questions were pretty predictable, just know your stuff!
She's not as bad as everyone says she is out to be. As long as you read and study her notes and the book because her tests are essay based, you should do fine. She may be late most of the time, but it's good to go to class so she recognizes your face.
Not the best professor, shes pretty scattered which can make her hard to follow. took endocrinology and dev biol with her. endocrinology was actually pretty good, dev biol was awful! either way she's a very easy grader though :)
Developmental Bio w/ her isnt so bad. She puts up notes but they aren't clear (neither is her lecture) so having the book helps clear things up. Exams are essays but she's a lenient grader. She starts class late sometimes and ends class early.
I really like her focus and wish more Profs. would take such a straightforward approach!
just awful.
I'll write a decent review since no one else has. The class itself is great and pretty much just MCAT stuff. But you're sorta put off going to lecture cause she just reads off the ppt. You learn things physicians deal with everyday e.g acidosis, physiological conditions etc. Very nice grader, exams are predictable, textbook not needed. You'll learn
Probably the dumbest and laziest teacher in the entire biology department. She uses all the same notes from classes before, does no active research, and takes weeks to grade tests which are three short answer question. She is also useless and will not provide any help. going to lecture was a complete waste of time.
This class will put you to sleep. She reads off the slides and then posts them. Her tests are 3 essay questions which are usually broad to cover a whole topic. She is an easy grader but if you are not good at essay tests then you are out of luck. Most science students at this school are used to taking mult choice tests so it can be a challenge.
worst teacher ever. Very annoying voice that makes you want to blow your head off. Doesn't let you take the notes she puts up in class. Why makes notes if not let us copy them. Are they for her. Don't take her.
Shame on the university that granted this woman a teachers degree.
Horrible Teacher. Not personable at all, and her class is guaranteed to put you to sleep aderol or not. Made me dread T/Th all semester knowing I had to sit through her BS lecture. She has to go.
She is a HORRIBLE teacher! Don't ever take her class. I am usually a good student but I got freakin D on her class. I do not understand what she say during lecture. She needs to learn grammar first. I hated her.
Don't take this class with her.Just don't.
She's pretty tough. Not very clear in her powerpoints or what she wants you to study. Rushes through powerpoints. Reading the textbook really helps. Not easy by any means. I had to pass/fail the class so my gpa wouldn't be ruined. You can certainly pass but getting an A will be a challenge.
one of worst teachers I've encountered. impossible to sit through class. avoid if you can (but how can you really she is only one who teaches animal phys)
This class is very interesting, and while she might not be the most engaging professor, she has good intentions. You can read the textbook in class while she goes over the powerpoints and you'll do fine
She copied an ENTIRE EXAM from last year and some people had copies of it and aced it, effectively screwing over the curve for an already difficult course and it was all because of her utter laziness! Her lectures are pointless and boring, my friend and I stopped going to class and learned more by self-teaching with the textbook.
She is a very understanding teacher and responds well to emails. Show up to class! she takes attendance which could boost up your grade at the end of the semester. Interesting class and easy to do well in if you have the right materials.
Nit picks tiny details to put on the tests, horrible lecturer and not knowledgeable about most of the topics we learned
These dismal reviews of Horrorwath are true--she is horrible and should be fired. Thanks to her my gpa is in the gutter. The course was split w her and prof Tamariello, who is excellent. Not surprisingly I did well with his exams and questions and failed Horwaths. Out of 414 students 57 got D's and 18 got F's. The final exam average was a 55. Avoid
For the first half of this course, we had Professor Tammariello, who was excellent. Then there was Horwath. She isn't quite as terrible as people say, but she is not a competent professor. This becomes especially evident in her powerpoint lecture notes, where she takes a paragraph of text and extends it over 5 bullet points. To be cont.
Dr. Horwath's power-points are filled with basic grammar errors which make note taking nearly impossible. Furthermore, her exams are extremely difficult and do not reflect the material she discussed in class. The textbook will be your best friend. Suggestion: avoid
I wish I could give a negative rating. Her slides are old and the figures represented in them do not correspond to the book which consumes your studying time with searching for them. She draws pictures and graphs on paint which represent chicken scratches. There is no organization and slides do not follow the book. avoid this class if you can.
Truly the most unorganized professor I've ever had. I think she has good intentions, but I ended up spending the amount of time for this class as I would have for two classes, and my grade is still suffering. f
She is not as bad as what everyone says on here. Her exams are a joke compared to the other professor (class was split with her and Dr. Lawless), and she tries to be clear in lecture. She is boring as hell in class but everything on her exams are in the notes.
Avoid her! Notes and tests are disorganized and full of typos. Tests are easier than those of other professors. Lectures are useless, you're better off reading the textbook and taking your own notes. Class was split between her, McGee, and Lawless - Horwath was the worst by far. She killed my interest in biology.
Awful. Unorganized, unhelpful, unclear. Contradicts herself. Tests have very strange questions on them, nothing like the material covered in class or notes. Treats class like children, will not slow down (or give out notes) and will not answer questions in class or office hours.
Tests are ridiculous and "essay form". Does not convey her thoughts very well and does a poor job teaching you the information. Goes too quickly and will not slow down or go back for you. No.
Read off of power point slides word-for-word, which in turn were copy-pasted from the textbook. When students asked a question because they didn't understand a concept, her reply was "that's just how the enzyme works" - the student was asking about a carbohydrate... Ignored emails and was unhelpful during office hours.
Just horrible. She is unorganized, not willing to help, and all the information comes from her jumbled PowerPoint. She'll say things like "we'll go into more detail later" but never does. You might as well skip class and memorize the power points. Oh yeah- grade is based on 3 exams and a paper. Don't have a bad exam or your grade is in the toilet.
Prof. Horwath posts very cryptic power points- they're impossible to fully understand unless you follow along in class and translate each slide. She's very rude to students and supplies no study materials or subject guides. Unless you NEED this class, it's not worth the hassle. If you ask her for help she will dismiss you. Textbook wasn't helpful.
An inevitably rough class.
She's a really nice lady. Very open to writing letters of rec. One of the easier upper level bio courses. Really pay attention. It's worth it if you're planning on taking the mcat.
Took her for developmental biology. Her lecture's aren't great, but they aren't terrible. She expects you to show up for class and passes around an attendance sheet pretty regularly., but idk if it affects my grade. Her tests are essay tests, but they are shockingly easy, and she grades them easy too.
Really don't understand why there are such bad ratings for Prof. Horwath. OK she's not the professor that will change your life with amazing lectures that you want to go to.. but show your face at office hours, read the text, and you'll be fine. Horwath is a sweet woman (again, not the most interesting), and will notice if you're trying to do well.
I took two classes with Horwath at the same time. Shes not very enthusiastic but her notes are online and as long as you study them you'll do good. Attendance is taken but not mandatory. Exams are essays but she grades easily.
Her PowerPoints, which she posts all of, look like they were written in haste the first time she taught the class and never touched again. Her class is straightforward and she is a generous grader. If you go to class and actually study for the exams, you'll do well. Essay test questions are simple to predict if you look at the material.
In this class you give one 45 minute presentation during the semester and write a 16 page paper on your presentation topic due at the end of the semester. Most people's presentations were embarrassingly bad. She seems to have lots of interest in the topic and is an easy grader and I felt like the class was just pushing the limits of her patience.
Her lectures can be dry and it may seem that she's just reading her slides every class, but she's receptive to questions and is a very lenient grader. However, her lecture slides can be unorganized sometimes so you might need to reference the textbook. I would take a class with her again.
Memorize the slides material completely and you will get very good grade, start studying 2 days before test. IT IS AN EASY CLASS IF YOU MEMORIZE, she grades VERY EASILY. The tests are essay's but easy but you need to MEMORIZE, know the main points and elaborate on them. I went to class for first two weeks and then skipped for 2 months LOL.
Lectures were a bit dull but pretty easily to follow along with. Just read over and memorize her powerpoints and you will get an A. She's a super lenient grader so don't be discouraged by the short essay exams.
She's nice, but a terrible lecturer. Her PowerPoint slides are disorganized and poorly planned. She just reads her notes off of the slides. Attendance isn't mandatory, but said she would bump your grade if you attended class, which she definitely did not do. Tests are essays, easy to predict the questions, but takes off points without explaining.
One of the worst professors. Her class is very disorganized and it is obvious that she doesn't care about her students. Her PPs are horrible and make zero sense when you try to review them. As the previous review says, her tests are essays which is awful, and she also takes points off w/out explanation. She has no clear grading criteria for exams.
These reviewers need to chill out. This class was fine. Attendance was optional, but it was beneficial to attend class. Professor Horwath could make her powerpoints more clear, but she clarifies all important material by drawing out diagrams and flowcharts. I didn't have to read a page of the textbook.
Dr. Horwath certainly is not the most amazing professor on the planet, but she is not the worst either. Her lectures are boring, but she passes around an attendance sheet during some that she supposedly uses as "extra credit" at the end of the semester. I went to class, didn't pay attention, and just crammed the night before an exam and did fine.
By far, the worst professors I have ever had in my 3 years at Binghamton. I have never met a professor (or person in general) that can care less about their students. Not willing to help in anyway possible, she gives you 3 tests the entire semester that are essay based (impossible). Takes off points w/out explanation and is completely out of touch.
This class consists of 4 grades; 3 tests each worth 30% of your grade and 1 problem set, which is an essay worth 10% of your grade. Her class is all about memorizing her notes word from word for the exams. The exams are ALL essay format. Attendance is not mandatory but she takes attendance about 5 random times throughout the semester.
Everyone is bugging. All we had was a midterm and final (both essay based) and a 15-20 page research paper. The paper is annoying so definitely start a month before it's due. There were about 9 lecs on both tests but just study for a week and you'll be fine. Not even intense studying; just read the notes a few times. Lightest bio class i've taken.
I've never had to memorize any material as intensely as I did in this course. She is a very ineffective instructor, and I found that I was teaching myself all of the material. At the end of the course she gave a fair curve, but if it is not a class you need for your major, I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you are up for intense memorization
I learned a good amount from this class, but I had to do it all myself. Her slides are terribly formatted, have weird abbreviations, and barely make any sense. Essay-only exams in a science course just don't make sense to me for so many reasons, but your grade is based on just 3 of those and a 4th essay-project. I do not recommend this class.
idk wtf everyone here is saying. Is a lecture heavy class with only essay exams BUT she deadass gives out the exam questions before hand if you listen. She'll say stuff like "if I were to ask this on an exam..." easy. PP's aren't super helpful but just go to class and you'll do fine. Never touched the textbook.
her slides were a little hard to understand but everything on them was what you needed for the tests. We had two tests and two papers all essay format. They required a lot of detail and memorization and those were the only things you were graded on.
Prof Horwath is honestly not as bad as these reviews make her seem. She is definitely not the best lecturer and her slides are confusing, but if you come to class and take notes, she makes it pretty clear what you need to know. The exams are all essays which can be stressful, but you can choose which questions to answer. Overall, not too bad.
Dr. Horwath is a great professor and these reviews don't give her enough credit and is a reason I was initially scared to take a class with her. We had 2 exams and 1 paper that was 15 pages, but it really was not bad just start it like 2 weeks before its due and you'll be fine. I just studied for the exams based off her powerpoints and did fine.
I can see why Professor Horwath has 2/5 rating, but honestly, it's not bad. Essay exam questions were predictable and fully based on lecture content. On top of that, she is an easy grader. The paper was nothing, I found sources ahead of time and wrote it in one night. She even gave two extra credits and is easy to reach out outside of class.
I have seen a lot of bad review for this professor. The truth is, yes the class is tough, however, if you find the right way to study then it isn't bad. There are three exams (each 30% of the overall grade) and a paper (worth 10% of your grade). She will boost your grade up at the end if you attend and sign the attendance sheet.
I took her 430 course, and albeit while I thought it was on the more difficult end, focusing on the lectures and studying 3 days in advance really helped out. Really helped gain a new appreciation for things.
3 essay exams (90%), and one 3-page paper (10%), gives extra credit for attendance. Not that hard if you pay attention, think of what questions she may ask, and do some practice writing. Lets you pick what questions you want to answer on the exam, answers are generally big-picture. Shes extremely knowledgeable on the material!
For biology of aids, 2 credit class one big presentation and one big paper based off your presentation. This class was not bad for an upper level, this was a lot of work concentrated in smaller windows of time and then majority of the semester you don't have to do anything other than show up.
NEVER TAKE HER CLASS!!! She won't help you with anything. If you ask a question, she will tell you she already answered it. She wont tell you what's on the only 2 exams that are worth 33% each! She won't explain or actually teach anything just list terms off slides. If you dislike yourself and want to struggle I'd reccomed this class.
This class might be okay if you aren't taking a lot of other classes but if you are be warned! She is very dissmive of students and takes long to respond to emails, if she does at all. Others said it wasn't that bad, they mutve taken a different class. Don't do it to yourself!
This professor was very discouraging. Anytime I came to ask for help, she was never willing! NEVER take her class. Stay away!
She is a very sweet lady who is very knowledgeable and passionate about her field. You are graded by only 3 exams and a practice set (which she can grade harshly), but if you learn her testing and grading style, you will be okay. Hard class, but she is not a jerk like many of these reviews say.
idk where all of these reviews about her not wanting to help are coming from... the course material is def difficult, but if u go to class it's not too hard to understand. if no,t study for a week or so before each test and go to office hours. she's always willing to help there, at least in my experience!
