Dr. Hughes is my favourite professor I have had in my first year of university. She has great lectures and actively engages with the class. She understand if there is some unforeseen circumstances in your life and doesn't hold you against it. I will take any class that Dr. Hughes will teach because she is just that good!
Professor Hughes is good at doing the marking within a few days after the test. Also, this is probably one of the best organized courses I've taken. All the reading and short explanatory videos are bundled up into a module for each section of the course. Would recommend taking this course as an extra credit for anyone, particularly science students
Her lectures are very entertaining which always makes me more engaged in learning. She has very well thought out examples to make difficult concepts more easier to understand. She seems very passionate about teaching psychology. Amazing prof overall!
Her class has both lectures and textbook readings. Expect to have upwards of 70 pages to read per unit (though most are significantly less than that). Overall I feel like I learned a lot however her exams are terrible. 96% of our final grade was quizzes/final and many of the questions will be about very random, throwaway information from lectures.
Dr. Hughes makes psyc lectures easy to understand and interesting, but her tests are extremely hard, and just watching the lectures will not help you pass. Actual tests are nothing like her practice questions at the end of each chapter.
Lectures were really easy and she explains everything well, but her tests are very hard. You need to watch every lecture at least twice and read the topic from the textbook to do well on her tests. She is extremely lenient and changes at least one question on every test to a bonus question.
Dr. Hughes is one of the best professors I have had in university. Although, the entire course grading is based on quizzes and exams, the marking is extremely fair. She is cares alot about her students and their well-being. Would highly recommend taking a class with her!
Dr. Hughes's lectures are easy to follow, engaging, and cover most of the material that you will be tested on in the quizzes/final. There are quite a few readings for each chapter, but they are always useful and usually less than 10 pages each. The quizzes were always fair and Dr. Hughes does accommodate the marking if the questions are too hard!
Dr. Hughes is extremely caring and passionate about the material. She is clear and never confusing, and doesn't test unfairly. Not too difficult of a class, although some test questions can be strange at times.
Took this class in fall 2020. Her recorded video lectures are engaging, enthusiastic, and does a good job explaining class concepts. She's extremely caring and considerate towards students, especially during COVID. Her tests are application type questions, so make sure you read the readings and understand the concepts and not just memorizing.
Kathleen is slightly odd at times but overall an enthusiastic lecturer with easy enough quizzes.
6 quizzes, each worth varying amounts. Engaging and informative lectures. Content is straightforward - read the textbook, and understand the nuances of her lectures and you'll be fine. Really understanding about extensions and mental health, especially during a pandemic. Easy A if you try in the course and understand concepts well. Love her!
Kathleen Hughes is my favourite professor at the University.
Dr. Hughes is amazing. She puts a lot of time and effort into making sure that students understand the course material, providing us with question-boards, activities, and question-and-answer sessions on top of Prezi lectures. Make sure to take advantage of opportunities to ask questions and clarify potential misunderstandings prior to an exam.
Kathleen is a great professor. She has worked very hard to make great online lecture videos on YouTube during Corona Season! This class was very interesting, and Kathleen expressed a lot of enthusiasm and interest in it. It really makes a world of difference to see someone engaged during lecture. The tests can be challenging, but not unfair.
Sweet and energetic, and she really knows how to organize content in an online format. Everything in the lecture is clear and well-organized. The course itself is just based on 5 quizzes and one final (and 4 research participation), all multiple choice questions. But the questions are more applied-type questions, so you really need to study A LOT.
I loved Dr. Hughes, she is so sweet, supportive and kind. Her lectures were broken down into smaller videos and activities which I really liked and helped me learn better. Her tests were fair but pay attention to small details in lecture and the readings as some of her test questions are specific.
Kathleen did an amazing job at teaching PSYC 201. Her lectures were super engaging and interesting. She did her best to communicate with students and make it feel like we weren't just watching youtube videos for an online class. Need to pay attention and take notes, as well as do readings if you want to do well. Overall I found Kathleen to be great
The most caring and understanding prof at this university. Here lectures are organized. Her notes are not sufficient for tests; you need to transcribe/write every single point she mentions on the lecture. Her test questions are tricky and some of them are pretty hard, but she usually removes those challenged the majority of the class.
Probably the kindest, most caring and approachable, diligent prof you will see on your life. She is also excellent in teaching. However, her test arent easy and almost all of her questions are application based with no back tracking. The course workload is pretty much heavier than other courses at this uni. Overall, best of the best.
I'm currently in this class for the fall 2021 semester, hopeful this is the last time this course is online. However I would definitely caution anybody against taking a class with her. Her tests are super word, and require knowledge of other concepts. On top of that she expects you to have the test in a closed book format, however her test or supe
her questions require a lot of knowledge, like which of the following have a Umami flavor? gin, cheese, chips, or apples. Yes, she really thinks students are going to know gin tastes, like we have 17 year olds in the class. On top of that she's not even making it up for it in lecture content, she's just going to post these sea lab video.
she doesn't put effort into her courses. the only time she does lecture videos is as pre-recorded youtube video. when people say this has a very heavy course load they mean it. As a third-year science student is on par with a science class I have, in terms of difficulty.
I am taking psych because I have interest in understanding more about psych. The content is fine, I understand everything easily and I dedicate my time, but the big issue is that her tests are created for psychologists and psych majors, I am not majoring in psychology, her questions are very weird, how am i supposed to know the smell of gin?
Her teaching style is decent at best. But the thing that make this course hard is the test, like pull your hair out. Its only been 2 months, and I loss 12 percent of my overall grade. Im a second chemistry major, who has a 3.8 gpa but if I wind with a c- to CR I will be lucky.
Not what I expected. Going into university I was told by my brother to take psyc 200, as its a course that will ease you into post secondary classes. Both that it was easy, like a grade 12 class and its a class which only take like 4 hours a week max. Sadly this is not the case, Im spending 10 hours a week, and get B+(80-85) if Im lucky.
We to do upwards of 70 pages to read per unit. We have 6 units, that is so much reading. This is a psyc course not a English course. Im term of teaching its not looking too good, go to YouTube sea lab psy and you can watch her lectures. And you will see what I mean, she also put ads on those video as well like every video
This coursed change my career objectives. Going into first university as a psychology student, I chose to take her class. One of the worst decisions Ive made in my life. Her test are very difficult and require a lot of knowledge. And my knowledge I do not mean psychology knowledge, I mean like what is the smell of an alcoholic drink( she ask it).
Its hard, like super hard. Not a 200 lvl psyc, she make the course like a 400lvl. She actually reuse one of the lecture for her 400 lvl class on us. So that something, your lecture are on YouTube with a lot of ad it makes watch them super had. 5 quiz worth 96 percent of the final grade. Other 4, you have to do paper for 1 percent each(pass/fail)
I would say her teaching style is very bland. I took the class in person with her. All she did was put videos on a projector and leave the room. On top of that she assigned a ton of reading. The thing that made it very difficult was the test. They are very wordy, and require a lot of Knowledge of psychology and biology. This is not a GPA booster
She doesnt know how make the test. Decent at teaching, however its pretty bland. Its a YouTube video that she requires you to warch, do reading. I know for a fact, she just made this class unnecessary hard. I would avoid it specially with her as a prof
Everyone tanking Hughes reviews is just mad they failed one of her tests. She is reasonable and reviews each test to ensure fairness/will take questions off/ offer a bonus if they are not fair. Her lectures are 5-15 minute long videos with usually about 11 per unit. Tests are easy if you read and watch the lectures. Responds quick, kind prof
although nice, Hughes assigns an unnecessary amount of work, and asks questions that sometimes contradict with what was learnt in lecture and what was read in the textbook. Questions on quizzes are worded terribly. Class averages on quizzes are always high 70's.
Most understanding prof (deferrals). Has her own videos on Youtube that she records and uploads, + assigns readings approx 2h each/unit. They're short and sweet. She notices trends in grading and offers bonus Qs if sth is off. Tests 96% and 4% comes from RPS OR article evals. Do the work, you'll be just fine. Happy to answer any questions you have.
Dr. Hughes's lectures are short and engaging. However, her lectures do not provide sufficient knowledge that allows you to do well on the quiz. She assigns lots of readings with new information (that has not been explained in the lecture) and tests you on it with application questions type. Her quizzes are difficult with no backtracking.
Everyone tanking her ratings is just mad they did poorly on one of her quizzes. While she does test the content in applicational ways, as long as you do the readings and take the time to make connections between topics, you'll be fine. Probably the most caring prof I've ever had. She allows you to defer quizzes for mental health reasons.
Dr. Hughes is a decent professor and a solid choice for intro psychology. Positive attitude and a focus on real learning. Quick lectures.
An Icon
Dr Hughes is amazing. I would take any class she was teacher just because of her. Her questions are skill testing for sure, but just pay attention to the lectures. She takes criticism about her questions really well and adjusts exams as needed. The readings are important but there isnt a lot. She uses jamboards so its easy to ask questions.
Dr Hughes is really good. The first unit of psyc 200 is tough but the rest are easy if you take notes correctly. Write down EVERYTHING she says and read the openstax textbook or else you won't do good. Her delivery of this course was one of the best I've ever seen. She deserves a lot of credit for her work. Also really shes really nice out of class
Really good prof. Lectures and heavy and so are the readings, try to learn to apply and not memorize.
Dr. Hughes is incredibly kind and makes learning fun. Works hard to create an inclusive environment and for everyone to feel like they belong. 449 was everything I could have wanted from a PSYC course - practical, people-focused, healing, with room for creativity and pursuit of research interests. I hope Dr. Hughes teaches more 400 level courses!
Her videos were easy and the quizzes were pretty easy, just take notes and watch her lectures and you'll pass with a good grade. Her prezi's and textbook readings were pretty annoying. Overall a pretty good prof.
I took this class online (asynchronous), but she was still an amazing prof! All of her content was very well organized on d2l. Her lectures were divided by 5-15 min videos on specific topics, which made the class feel shorter but straight-forward. Quizzes are based off of the lectures AND readings!!!!
Not the easy A which it once was, she makes you work for it and makes the quizzes very tough. She's very hard to reach for questions and takes a while to respond. I wouldn't recommend taking her class.
I took both psyc 200 and 201, she wasn't too bad for psyc 201 but for psyc 200 she was a menace. The quizzes were much harder, many more extra readings were required, less time for the quizzes. The average was much lower per quiz for psyc 200 since she makes the quizzes so hard. I struggled to get through this class.
Not a very good prof, just has youtube videos that don't go in-depth for you to understand the material for the quizzes.
I was struggling in this class, 90% of the concepts did not make sense and when I tried to email her she didn't reply. I don't hope this class on my worst enemy, save yourself and don't take psyc 200.
Literally the worst prof. We were told that the class average is low straight up at the beginning and not to expect to do well... like huh?! The test questions made no sense whatsoever and were literally the worst things ever. The classes and other materials don't help whatsoever. If you don't have to, don't take this course with this prof.
anyone saying Dr. Hughes is "awful" is probably just not getting the grades they want. you do have to work for them (as any course would). i wouldn't recommend if you aren't a psyc major but she is one of the best profs i have ever had. super understanding and deserves to be respected. if you actually study effectively, you will be fine
A lot of the people leaving replies are really stretching the situations. She's very sweet, kind, and obviously cares about her students and is very passionate. There are complaints about the level of readings and exams being hard, well no sh!t its a university level course where you have to apply what you're learning.
PSYC 201- bad prof. PSYC 200- good prof. on opposite day
Hughes is an amazing and understanding professor. Her test questions tend to be application based, which can make the exams harder if you are unable to connect the question and the concept or expand on the concept. They tend to be fairly straightforward if you can though. Don’t let the negative reviews prevent your from taking her courses.
Dr. Hughes is incredibly caring and this is evident in her lectures and teaching method. Although the material is challenging at times she makes the material engaging and provides many opportunities for feedback and discussion when it comes to grading.
Lectures weren't too long and easy to understand. She was super easy to communicate with and very understanding of the needs of the students. She was fair and transparent in her marking, giving many opportunities for assessment (instead of 1 worth 35%).
She's an awesome professor! You need to read the textbook to get good grades in her courses, and she only uses free textbooks, which is really nice. I know her quizzes might be challenging but I liked some of them tbh.
I suspect the legitimacy of the bad reviews. She is one of the best profs at this uni. It is just the fact that her exams are hard and tricky. If she just make a balance b/t the number of application based question and easy question, everything will 100% perfect.
I took this class as an elective however this course turned out to be the most stressful class for me and my overall GPA declined. You are expected to watch 10-11 videos and read textbook and extra readings which is a burden when you have 4 more courses to do. The professor does give deferrals easily. Would not really recommend taking this course.
The content is not covered during class time. weekly quizzes are VERY content heavy. The quiz questions and answers are worded very strangely. Even when I knew the content extremely well, the answers made no sense. The quizzes are also closed book. The TA for the course did not answer her emails at all. The prof too a long time to respond to emails.
She was a great professor who gave lots of feedback, and was happy to answer questions in a timely manner via email. She had the class vote for a peer team to help with everything from peer mentoring to notetaking. Her tests were more applied than memorization based, which made the information stick in a meaningful way.
I will start out by saying that Dr. Hughes as a person is very nice and approachable. However, the format of this class does not work for everyone and there is very little wiggle room when it comes to changing the format. You have weekly quizzes based on youtube videos she made previously and textbook readings. It was more work than I thought.
Her tests make me sad. Her teaching makes me mad. Her response time is unreasonably bad. Dr Hughes is a prof I wish I did not have.
This was the hardest psychology class i've taken and i've taken 2 other ones, i'm not sure if it is the teacher or the course since I had different teachers for each psyc class, but I had to put a lot of effort for this class in comparison to the other psyc classes i've taken, her tests are harder.
Dr. Hughes is a nice prof who cares about the well-being of her students. That being said, this course was very difficult. The workload was twice as much as I have had for any other course and there were a lot of in-depth quizzes which made the class very stressful. Overall she is a very nice person, but the course itself was hard.
The reviews are legit. A 200 level psyc class should not be remotely this hard. The course content essentially consists of youtube videos uploaded during the pandemic and re-used ever since, yet details asked in exams extrapolate much further beyond the vague points mentioned in the videos.
This was my first in-person class with her, and honestly you did not have to attend to do well in this class. She is a caring and wonderful person and is always open to discuss her passions if you're ever early to class. The course content lectures were all online youtube videos that if you took detailed notes on then you would generally do well.
She claims that her tests are 'application-based', but since this is an intro course, and there is no foundation to apply from, it just results in her not teaching all the material you need to do well on the test. Takes things way too personally, is not accomodating at all, and has set up the course in a way that gives her the smallest work load.
She has been an amazing teacher so far! She makes sure you have accessibility to help when it is needed. Not only cares about what she is teaching but cares about each individual.
Dr. Hughes is hands down the best psychology professor at the University of Calgary. Her lectures are so fun and interesting. You will never get bored in her class. She is also so caring and accommodating to her students which makes for such a comfortable and fun atmosphere.
On the easier side! She's good at explaining the material in a way that's engaging; getting you to apply what you know to every day life. Her quizzes ARE NOT THAT BAD. Very common sense, and near the end of the semester when I couldn't go to her in person lectures as much the videos and readings were more than enough to do well.
Dr. Hughes is a thoughtful teacher and truly considerate of her students. Her lectures are always interesting and engaging; she makes the material stick effortlessly. She provides the text book (free) and her lectures online which was so helpful. She gives many opportunities for testing and tries to remove the students' stress. Highly recommend!
I find these bad reviews quite suspicious. Dr Hughes is the best educator I've had in my academic career. Doing well in this course is not difficult at all. You just need to put the time in (and not even THAT much time). Her lectures are incredible, she truly has a gift for teaching. She genuinely cares for each and every student. Incredibly kind
Her lectures are very interesting especially since she doesn't read straight from the slides but uses real-life examples to support them. She has quizzes at the end of each unit which really helps but the wording can be confusing at times. It's also important to read the textbook if you want to do well since many questions are pulled from there.
Dr. Hughes is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about psychology as shown through her enthusiastic and encouraging teaching style. I was especially grateful for the accessibility to her online lectures, as I find I learn better in that environment. The class itself has a low workload between 3 exams, 2 assignments, and class participation.
Lectures were very engaging, and there were backup lectures to watch in case you missed class. This class was a great way to start my day. I just wasn't a big fan of how many readings there were.
Hands down the best prof I've ever had. Her lectures are well thought out and easy to follow. If you miss a class, there are equally as good backup lectures. She answers emails fast and always makes herself available for extra help. Instead of just cramming content, I actually enjoyed and learned a lot in this class. Overall AMAZING HUMAN.
I liked Dr Hughes alright. PSYC201 is very content heavy, so if you're interested in it as an option, but worried about having one with a big courseload, maybe don't take it. It's interesting, but a LOT of material to memorize for the final. The class doesn't give you the chance to connect with Hughes at all, but she's clearly passionate for psych.
I generally liked Professor Hughes. However, I did not appreciate the amount of class time that was cancelled. She's a good teacher, when she is actually teaching.
I loved now she brought in real life examples to connect with the material. We had quizzes at the end of each unit which were based on critical thinking and applying the definitions to real life scenarios which is difficult but shows you how to actually use psych. Readings are heavy and fair game on tests. Pre recorded lectures were provided.
Dr. Hughes is always an amazing prof! This is the fourth class I've taken with her and it did not disappoint! She really focuses on making sure we learn rather than just testing. She is also very flexible and understanding when it comes to assignments. However, grading was sometimes delayed on her end. Overall so good!
Kathleen was easily the best professor I have ever had. She was incredibly engaging and made learning fun. I have never found it so easy to follow the content in a class. She made every unit feel so exciting. She is a truly talented teacher.
What an amazing and lovely professor. She was transparent about marking, understanding with extensions, easy to approach, and taught relevant, hands-on material. If you show up to her labs, put in the work, and ask questions, she will always reward the effort. Not only that, but I had a lot of fun in her class. HIGHLY recommend!
It's unbelievable that the main format she taught the content through was videos recorded during the pandemic. She also made 4% of our grade be participation in studies which is literally unethical. For reference other profs give a bonus for research participation. I can't believe she could so wildly violate informed and willing consent.
