Dr Kolbet is an effective teacher, but she moves through the material at a rapid pace. She will help you if you use her office hours. The class is hard by nature, but she gives you what you need to do well. Her tests and quizzes are TOUGH.
If you want to be a chem major, she wuld be okay. However, for everybody else her class will hurt a GPA. My class started with 28 people and by the end there were 10 left and I am sure most got C's, tests are like 14 pages long and very Hard. She dosen't really care about you as a student and has little sympathy if you are doing bad in the class.

She is nice, and is always willing to answer that "why does this really matter" question. She will give you multiple examples for the same thing if you ask. On-line quizzes are impossible without help from the tutoring center or other students (who already went). If you want to learn, take her. If you want a good grade, don't.
Great teacher. She is very knowledgable and helpful although her exams are long. You have to know the information well and be able to do problems fast otherwise you run out of time. Overall, she helped this "non-chemistry" student understand chemistry and pass the class.
Good teacher. Tough but fair. Lots of study and home wurk required, but if you pass this course you really know chem. Kinda Hot (if you're over 30).
Find another professor, even if you have to transfer to another school.
Great prof. Easy to understand, great for those who have trouble with science. Test are easy, you have access to previous tests to study. Loved the class. and the 'squished' zeros.
She is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend her. I would take any class she taught, regardless of the subject.
I took her a few years back. Despite what the last three people say (I'm convinced they're all the same person, look at the similarities in the typing and wording style). I remember more than half of my class dropping before the 3rd exam. She's TOO HARD for an entry level class. I got a C for it. I took Chem 122 at UNR and got an A. Go figure.
Dr Kolbet is a quick lecturer who assigns a great deal of challenging homework and online quiz problems. Face it, she is a difficult instructor ... but there is a lot to be learned from her, and if you put forth the effort you will learn.
It's like Jekyl and Hyde. Don't take her if you're going to be in lab after 9pm. Don't expect a good grade, I'm a straight A student, but not anymore. Online quizzes are impossible and do not relate to what is taught. Tests are unpredictable regardless of how much studying you do. She was great for 121, NOT 122.
I did not enjoy her style of teaching nor did I like the online quizzes. They took up a lot of time and werent very helpful to me. She thinks shes funny but isnt and has an arrogance to her personality. I hated coming to class every week.
I wish all my professors were this awesome. She has list of reading and book homework, but it's not mandatory nor graded. Online homework can take a few hours each week, reading the book and examples help. Gives you all the info and tools to succeed but you just have to put in the work. Very good at explaining concepts in multiple ways.
Dr Kolbet is great! but u hv to work really hard becuz her lectures r kinda fast. She assigns webassignment weekly other than that no hw.She also puts up all class notes on angel. Her exams r really hard, u hv to work hard to get a good grade in the class and she doesnt offer extra time during the exam so u really need to be fast at calculating .
I would strongly reccomend Dr. Kolbet. She will work for you if she notices you are putting forth effort to learn. She will teach in anyway that you can understand and really wants you to succeed, dont slack off or she wont give you the benifit of the doubt. Work hard and shell make sure you get the grade you deserve
She goes to fast and if you ask her a question she tells you to just keep going over the question you need to answer and won't help you. I do not recommend taking this class with her unless you really understand chemistry.
She's a great teacher. BUT you have to read the chapters, do the end of chapter questions and STUDY. She makes herself available and is always willing to help a students who truly want/need help. It's not an easy class but when was Chemistry ever easy!
Best teacher in chemistry ever. Clear and does not use textbook too much, only homework is causing trouble. If homework is done, A is there. Must know the homework and previous online test materials. Tests are all from there.
Difficult class...lot of work nightly to keep up. Professor moody...never know if she will help you or put you down. I did learn a lot in the class.
Very organized, makes efficient use of lecture time & covers a ton of course material. Yes, she treats you like the adult you are, but she will help if you ask. Tests are harder; keep up with the HW/reading & you will know the basics. She structures the course so that if you do as the syllabus outlines you'll probably pass. Study groups help!
Now that I'm a senior at UNR, I'm constantly thankful for taking Dr. K. for both gen chem courses. She's tough but everything on the exams is always clearly covered in class. I'm always ahead in my classes now because many of my fellow students still struggle with quickly working with the basics of chemistry and working out simple calculations.
Dr. K is my favorite Chemistry teacher at TMCC! She is passionate about teaching and makes Chemistry interesting! She teaches in a step by step process and is always more than willing to help you as long as you ask. Make sure you go to class everyday and take notes and you should have no problems in this class.
I was just punching my ticket in this course with little interest in chem. Dr. K made this pretty easy. She has really developed a class to help students grasp chem in a simple way. Takes effort but its all there to succeed. She can be somewhat unapproachable but do ask ?s. With my level of interest the commitment wasn't to bad 4-8 hrs HW a week.
I am very grateful for Dr. K as she is a fantastic teacher! I don't remember taking chemistry in high school and it has been many years since then, so I was starting with nothing. I am so impressed with Dr. K that even though it's an 8am class (thumbs down), I'm taking 122 next semester with her. Highly recommended; you won't regret it!
I took this class in the summer. Dr. K is amazing! I took AP Chem in high school and didn't understand anything! Dr. K breaks everything down into easy to follow steps that make sense. I highly recommend taking her. There was homework due online every day, but it really helped with the understanding of everything.
Professor is knowledgeable in Chem but comes off as egotistical and tends to belittle students. Exams are difficult which almost seems to be done intentionally. I got the impression that the professor does NOT want her students to do well. Gives excessive amounts of homework. I'd suggest looking elsewhere for Chem courses.
I had never been exposed to chemistry prior to this instructor, and was astounded with how well I understood! She was extremely helpful, allowed many opportunities to speak with her, was quick to respond to emails, and just generally a great person to be around. She's very intelligent, and knows her stuff! Wouldn't take anyone else!
Great teacher. Extremely hard exams tho and only has past exams to study from.
Loved her for 121, but for 122 the class average grade on the 3 exams is a 65%, and she's the dept. head... sad! Other posts say it best: moody, arrogant, ego, superiority, trick exam questions, etc. Her students' success is not her top priority; she killed some 4.0 gpa's! I gave 110% - the hardest B of my career! Discouraging, not recommended!
Good teacher for CHEM121, poor teacher for CHEM122. Did not go over material properly, jumped into equations without giving an explanation to their applications. Did not teach the last third of the class properly. Needs to re-evaluate her course setup.
Difficult teacher, make sure you have a study plan together. She doesn't give extra credit but if you pass the class you know your stuff.
Dr. Kolbet is an awesome professor. Her class is not easy. She responds to email and grades test very quick. attend class and do all her practice tests and you will get A in the her tests.
Dr Kolbet is smart, and she knows it, which results in a lot of ego. as a result, I don't think she really cares if any of her students succeed or not. the class was difficult and the exams were tough. labs were pretty easy though and the comprehensive final was multiple choice, so wasn't a total bummer.
Dr. K prepares an extremely well organized course. It is challenging and she expects a high level of engagement and effort, but she rewards it fairly. She offers plenty of preparation materials for exams, including all of her previous exams. If you practice these, there will be no surprises on her actual exams. Overall, she's an excellent professor
I am one of those people who was afraid to take chem. But off the bat she told you what is expected of you in her class to succeed. KNOW YOUR ALGEBRA!! That is where most people in my class struggled. Make sure you look at her past tests that she posts online!! They help A LOT! She answers emails very quickly so ask questions, she will answer! :)
Dr. Kolbet definitely knows her stuff when it comes to Chemisty. She tries her best to make it easy to understand the material but her tests are tough and so are the homeworks. Her homeworks are based on correctness and she provides the answer key once all are graded but she doesn't spend time going over the answers. Tests tough but partial points.
Dr. K is an extremely smart woman. And she definitely knows it. Sitting in class, I wonder if I'm there to learn chemistry or if I'm there to learn how much she knows about chemistry. Very egotistical to say the VERY least. She will give help when you ask for it, but avoid doing so if you're sensitive to criticism. I would find another professor.
Dr. K is amazing and she is very fun to learn from. She makes the class interesting, but is not easy. To get a good grade in this class, you gotta study, and hard. Lots of web assignments and these will help you with each exam.
I didn't enjoy her class at all and it was tough.
Ahem... Difficult as all heck. Prepare for the tests. Her tests are difficult. My saving grace was study guides and her power points. All of the lessons are on canvas. You read practically the entire text book. Lots of web assignments. Lots of homework. That being said, Dr K. knows what she is talking about. Ask her anything. It is difficult! :)
Dr. Kolbet seems a bit intimidating at first but is an excellent professor devoted to the learning of her students. She offers various office hours to seek help. She challenged me every single day. You actually lean in her class not just pass. Exams are worth a lot so studying is important. I suggest her for chem 100.
She's a great teacher. Tests are difficult though, so study hard (details matter). The course is graded on a point system, so the value of all assignments are predetermined. Homework consists of Web Assignments and Journals. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask her. Overall, this class was okay. Good Luck!
Dr. Kolbet is the best professor I have ever had! She does not baby you through the material and holds you accountable for it but she will take the time to explain thoroughly and in different ways. Dr. Kolbet is very enthusiastic and you can tell she loves and understands Chemistry. She models exams after passed exams which you are given to study.
Great professor. Class was extremely organized, which helped me a great deal. Plenty of practice problems to run through before tests, practice tests, and solutions. I always felt in this I had what I needed to succeed in this class.
Dr. K is pretty good. The class isn't that hard, but it is a bit boring. Tests are hard and they will drop your grade! STUDY! There are web assignments for homework; they are a bit tedious but not too hard. 7 journals due every 2 weeks; she grades HARD on these, and they will drop your grade. You can drop some of these (journals and WA's). Not bad.
Very tough class. There are things she expects you to know. Her lectures are though if you fall behind you will not pass. Every time you ask her for help, she puts you down unintentionally.
Solid professor! She is always able to help and gives you lots of practice. Exams are tough but she gives you resources to study. Very clear and organized class. Homework consists of reading and answering questions, with a journal assignment every 2 weeks.
The subject itself was pretty hard, but Dr. K was a pretty good teacher. Responds quickly to emails and tons of extra credit. I would recommended
Dr. Kolbet is really tough. But if you put time and effort into her class, you'll pass with at least a B if not higher. She's really well organized and puts time into making sure you know material. Homework is fairly light which will give you time to study for the tough exams. Go into the class with an open mind...
I learned in Dr. K's class; Dr. K knows a lot about chemistry & is smarter than you. oh, and also some chem but mostly that she's very smart. main take home message right there. Her tests are needlesly difficult. if you absolutely CAN'T take another professor, study and take the exams from past semesters that she posts online. also do ALL the hw.
Good at conveying the complicated concepts of chemistry, and good to ask questions to. The tests are a bit hard, and the homework sometimes sneaks up on you, but you could definitely do worse when it comes to chemistry teachers. Labs are fun too.
If you are not there for one exam she will fail you! When you ask her a question she gets angry. She does not like it if you contradict her.
Dr. K has mastered teaching chemistry to make sure students are set up for success. The class is a lot of work but all of that work is required if you want to truly understand chem and not just memorize it. There are 2 online homework and a prelab due every week and lots of EC. For the tests, they are heavy but the practice tests are VERY similar.
Dr. K is one of the best chemistry professors I've had. She made a booklet with explanations, examples and practice problems that makes the class almost self-teachable. No textbook required when i took it. Wish more professors did this. She's very helpful with questions and not rude at all! Chemistry is just a tough subject for some people.
Difficult content but lots of in class time to practice and the homework is useful. Labs are an easy way to get points though it is near impossible to get 10/10 on most labs. Kolbet knows Chemistry very well and is a good instructor. Take the time to show up and do the homework or you will have a tough time getting back into the swing of things.
This class was very hard. She teaches as if you know everything already and just covers everything as a review you would have before say an exam. Yes she elaborates and answers questions, but for me personally I dont know what to ask if Im confused about everything she talked about. Lots of Homework and tests are difficult.
Dr. K definitely makes you work for your grade but if you try and put some effort in, you'll pass. The quizzes weren't bad and the exams were super easy if you studied. the labs were fun, and the writing assignments were doable. I would recommend taking Chem 100 with her.
Dr. K is the best professor I have ever had. She is always available and is quick to reply to e-mails when I needed help. She provides many resources for her students to be successful. She is the most helpful teacher I have ever had. If you have the chance to take her class, please do!!!
I have taken CHEM 121 about 9 years ago. So needless to say, I've forgotten everything. I took Dr. K's 121 and 122 class and now I love chemistry. Chemistry is a tough class to begin with, so don't be surprised if you find this class difficult. She tells you EXACTLY what the expectations are in the class. Do your HW. She posts past exams online!!
Dr. K is literally amazing. She has a teaching style that more profs should adopt. She explains things wonderfully and makes it relatable so you can grasp the concepts. She always asks at the beginning of every class if you need to go over any problems from the homework; she also does this for exams. Chemistry is hard but she makes it enjoyable!
Dr. K made a workbook (for both 121 and 122) and we called it "the book of answers". Her lectures were like fill in the blanks of the workbook, but her lectures were super interesting. I took 121 at UNR which was fine, but taking Dr. K's class was the best decision ever. She makes the class way more interesting. Plus only 26 people in the class.
I'm sorry for anybody that has to take this class through Kolbet. Her exams are the hardest exams i have ever taken in my life, I never missed a class and I received a near perfect grade for every homework or lab assignment. I print out and practice on almost all the practice exams and I still struggled to get by. Prayers to everybody in the class
Wow... this year has been to tough for so many students and all I can say is Kathleen did not help. I understand that distance teaching may be hard, but I have never hated a class more. She wasn't helpful at all and I still haven't learned a thing, spent an ungodly amount of $ on the lad kit and textbook too. She was completely unforgiving on work.
All I can say is I've never hated a class more than ever. If you have the option to not take this class with Kathleen don't take it. It's been a hard year for everyone and she hasn't helped at all. I told her if she could give me an extension because my grandma died and she said sorry but no. And not to mention the lab is super expensive!!!!!!!!!
I took this class as a requirement, and it was the worst. This class was supposed to be Synchronous class, but then she decided she didn't have enough time to do lectures. She is no help at all, and the textbook required really has very little to do with chemistry. If you enjoy teaching yourself "chemistry" then I do recommend taking her class.
Mostly based on the textbook. I would recommend reading chapters but there's no need to take notes (Dr.K highlights most important info through reading/study guides). There's a discussion for each chapter (8), 4 labs, & 4 writing assignments (fun & not hard). Rubrics are clear. Very organized. No extra credit! Do the work (on time) and you'll pass.
I was recommended to take Kolbet & I am glad I took her. The lectures are very helpful & go over everything you need to know. She explains the content in a way you understand & her textbook is great for practicing. It's important to complete the online homework too in order to pass the exams. Always ask for help on labs & pre-labs. Take her!
take this women she truly cares about you, it is hard work and she is strict. she care that you learn, she puts all the resources out there. if you try you will get an A. just got to class, go to review, practice 10 mins a day, do your class work, you will pass. take her in the summer!!! i took 3x at unr i took her once and i passed!!
Dr. K was a very caring teacher and she was very funny. She explained some things like calculations and math very fast which was one of her downsides, but she did offer office hours. There's not too much work but the reading guides suck.
Hands down, favorite course I took this semester. Dr K is strict with her due dates and her coursework is dense but she's a benevolent dictator. Her class is lively, engaging, and she has a great sense of humor. She responds to student questions thoughtfully and takes student suggestions. She's not your friend but she's DEFINATELY not your enemy.
The professor is great but the class is hard. There is a lot of work outside of class. But the work is hard and do not wait until the last minute to turn it in. Attendence is worth part of your grade. If you skip class you will be so lost. Because there is so much material in the text. You have to go to class! Get the textbook also. Study for exams
You aren't graded on much and in terms of a chemistry class, it was overall not bad. She cared about her students and it really shows, she is funny but I still dreaded going to her class. Exams were hard, on the final I scored about a 50, get ready to think.
Dr. K is one of the best instructors I have ever had. She is clear, succinct, and patient. A rare example of an instructor who is both brilliant in her field AND excellent at explaining the subject matter to people who are less brilliant. Her workbooks are a much more affordable and useful alternative to your average chemistry textbook.
Kathleen's inability to print out accurate lab instruction manuals made it extremely hard to follow instructions and learn. Approaching her with questions is difficult due to her uncooperative attitude. She's honestly just not very respectful of her students and I wouldn't want to go back to her class anytime soon.
She clearly explained the material in a way that was easier to understand. She's super fun, while making sure that stuff gets done. I really enjoyed her class. Overall, she's pretty chill, but still maintains strict criteria.
Although I passed the class, it was not without an extreme struggle between the two of us. The grading scale was extremely unclear leading up to the final, and when I requested help calculating a potential grade she turned me away. Expect your questions to be met with another more confusing question.
Overall, she was good at teaching and explaining the material however, she was pretty mean. Everyone felt uncomfortable asking her questions because she would almost make you feel stupid and be super mean/ unhelpful. Whenever, anyone made even the littlest of mistake she would overreact and shame that student in front of the class.
I would not recommend taking this class with her to anyone. She makes her exams unreasonably difficult although I passed this class I still struggled. When you ask her questions she's super unhelpful and always seems annoyed that you're even asking her.
Egotistical professor who always bragged about her expertise in chemistry. Find another professor for this class.
This professor is the worst I've ever had. She has a bad attitude and seems annoyed and uncaring about her students. Her exams are unreasonably difficult; even though I passed, I still struggled. When you ask her questions, she's unhelpful and always annoyed. If I had to retake her, I'd cry. IF YOU HAD A CHOICE DONT TAKE HER! IM SAVING YOU!!!
Dr. K is a great professor as long as you pay attention and show up to class. It's rather hard to pass the weekly quizzes if you don't show up to class so you need to make a point to show up even if attendance isn't mandatory. If you pay attention to the lectures you will have no problem passing the class even if it's hard sometimes.
I don't recommend her to anyone, especially if you have accommodations she will not let you use anything and is really rude when you ask a question or ask for help. She is not helpful and just expects you to know everything. She gives you so much to memorize in a month but she has all of this memorized because shes been teaching for many years.
In the first weeks I attended this class she made it clear about her expectations, rules, and the fact she won't take late work so plan well. I really enjoyed her lectures and learned a lot soley from them without the textbook. The study guides and presentations are super helpful for studying, even the textbook even though I barely used it.
