Nice lady, fun and intersting class for the most part, loooots of reading though.
A very nice instructor. Mid-term and Final was pretty easy but there is a lot of reading to do. I had 11 books for her class and you have to keep up with it because you get points for talking about it in class. One 3 page paper at the end. If you love to read and hate to write then this is for you.
Class was too hard for GE. Too many books. If you like history she'll like you.
motivated and passionate about the subject, too much reading took away from more class discussion and retention of information. not realistic in reading expectations.
I think she is a good teacher but i seriously dont like her tests. She expects us to study over a hundred terms when she is really only gonna use 10 of them.. Reading is alot to and sometimes she can get seriously sidetracked. she could learn to be easier on her students when it comes to terms
she is NOT a solid teacher in my book, i'm sorry. she punished us for not choosing to answer an OPTIONAL essay question on her test, she tells us we CANNOT come to her class late (even though she's late herself), she penalizes us if we miss class, she snickers if you answer a question wrong, keeps us late, & she doesnt return emails. wtf!
I thought she was an awesome teacher. She was really helpful and easy to talk to. There is a ton of reading but I liked all the books.
she gives us 100 identification terms to study (for on the final) and then will ask us to identify 6 out of 12 (of her choosing) come the final. oh my god. i have 5 other classes to study for- i cant believe how tedious and tiring this is. i am really, really frustrated.
Knows her subject. Too many books, not enough class discussion. Too many ID's for tests, not realistic. Class would have been better with more of Noonan's knowledge, not just from reading books.
too many books and id terms. toooo much talking.
A ton of reading to do. Hard tests because you have to memorize too much to pass them. Not very helpful when you have problems. You either sink or swim in her class.
she's one of the best history professors.knows her stuff and will write a great letter of rec if you can get a A+..great readings!
DO NOT take this class. Ridiculous amount of reading for a GE class. final is worth 40% of your grade and is outrageously difficult. do NOT take-- especially at 8am!
SHE MIGHT BE THE BEST PROFESSOR AT THIS SCHOOL. I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT HER CLASS, TAKE IT. IT IS SO REWARDING. YA IT'S A LOT OF WORK BUT THIS IS COLLEGE WHAT DO YOU EXPECT. SHE IS EXACLT WHAT YOU EXPECT TO BE A HISTORY PROFESSOR AND MORE.
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS! College is emant to educate, not embarass...and that it simply her goal. She thinks she is gods gift to the historical world! I would never recommened anyone to take her...and if you do be careful she thinks everyone plagarises.!
the readings are academic, dry, and super dense, and yes super interesting! and as a history major and i hate fellow history people that just take up space and breath people's air..read the articles and have something say for god sakes! have an opinion!

You will learn a lot in her class. She has informative lectures and you will have about 8-9 books to read...which is not a lot, when compared to REAL university-level work (SSU is a bit like intellectual wiffle ball). There is a lot of material, but if you are serious about learning, take her. Compared with a lot of SSU professors, she actually pushes her students, rather than letting them slide when it comes to comprehending course material.
Terrible teacher. Class is always boring and she is constantly putting people down. She degrades anyone she thinks isnt as smart as her, and is a very tough grader. You don't want to take a class with her unless you are a history major and want a challenge
To the person who isn't happy with her 251 class obviously doesn't know much about what a college prof. is to be like. She is not condisending and I am sure I have that class with that person and they probably don't participate or do the work that is assigned and that's why they feel that way about Noonan
TAKE THE SUMMER CLASS!!!!
She is a great professor and if you don't mind reading you will love her. She is tough on the reading though (200+ pgs/wk) so you have to read for the class but overall you will learn so much from her. Her midterms are not that hard (essay and IDs) and she is one of the best lecturers at this school. A wealth of knowledge!
Has a lot of spunk but jumps around alot in lecture, really abrasive at times to a class that doesn't know what she is thinking. Is passionate about the material but expects the class to already know what she knows, can get frustrating. Would be more enjoyable if excerpts of required readings were given to class to read instead of entire books.
Teaches her class the way college courses were intended to be taught--challenging, enthusiastic, and engaging. Gives ample opportunity for students to get involved in class through questions/participation/disussion although about 90% of the class sits there like passive lumps on logs :( Her T.A. John is also absolutely brilliant!!--Great Course
Her passion for teaching history absolves her teaching flaws.
Three Pros -very Sweet -really knows her stuff and will answer questions -tests are strait-forward Three Negatives -Reading list need to be cut by 3-4 books -I.D. list for the tests are way to long -Rather then assign 10-12 books, Why not make it 6-8 with a textbook? That wouldve made a huge difference for me in the class
noonan is a very nice teacher who knows her stuff. she assigns 10-12 different novels and no textbook, and her lectures are supposed to to supplement a textbook. the problem is that her lectures jump around alot so its hard to get a linear sense of whats going on. it would be nice to have a textbook/ course reader to help with this.
Noonan was so much fun. She's sweet, smart, and personable. Just be sure you keep up on your reading and study those ID sheets.
Professor Noonan is the most helpful professor I have ever met! Her lectures are really fun and make it easier to digest some of the dates and battles etc. Her attendance policy is not mandatory though the student is the one who will miss out- one lecture is all it takes. This is a must take professor in the History Dept.
really passionate about history, she tries to make her lectures more interesting but it was difficult because there's alotttt of reading required. she gives study guides for the midterm and final weeks in advance. also difficult because it's a GE class that requires more than GE knowledge to be confident with this class.
WAY too much reading. And, unfortunately, she bases most of the class on it. I prefer more lecture than reading. But, at the same time, she'll go have a beer at the pub with you after her final. You make up your mind.
Your all haters. I graduated last year and just looked at this out of interest. Professor Noonan is the best Professor I had. She always wanted to help, was very nice and extremely fair. If you hated her then your just an idtiot
Noonan is a great teacher, you really learn interesting history in her classes, and she picks some good books to read. But if you dont like history or reading about it then you might want to take your GE at SRJC. Professor Noonan is a College level history teacher, and really applies herself, shes not just here for the pay check like many at SSU
This lady is no help and assigns way too much homework. Avoid making the mistake I did and don't take this mess of a teacher!!! Noonan works with graduate students and will treat you like one with lot's of work and no help.
I am horrible when it comes to learning history, but Professor Noonan made it interesting. I think I only missed one class. She is friendly and helpful. I actually retained what I learned in that class.
I took her class a year ago during intersession. There are less books for intersession than a regular semester:4 amounting to about 2,000 pages. Lectures are very clear. She shows enthusiasm for the course. Tests are "identify and define" and essay questions. It really expanded my knowledge and understanding of the period.
Noonan rocks. She's a great lecturer, always keeps a firm grip on the classes attention, and reveals why the material she's teaching is in fact very interesting.
Wayy to much reading. she gives you two weeks to read a book that you take a ten minute essay on then never use the book again. This class is worthless if you actually want to learn something.
I am glad that I took this course during winter intersession; reading was held to a tractable amount. Dr. Noonan's competence and passion for the subject were always evident. This course gave me a new respect for a subject that I had previously found not especially interesting.
Lots of reading on a regular basis, be prepared to read over 100 pages a week. Little to no homework expect reading. Tests are mostly remembering terms and concepts, good lecturer and very helpful.
Professor Noonan assigned interesting readings, demanded that we treat the class seriously and was, overall, an excellent example of how a professor should operate. She is always willing to help, and takes an interest in the student as an individual. And she brought bagels and coffee for the last class...YAY!!!
She comes across as passionate about her material. She's smart, friendly and fair. Engage yourself in class discussions and come prepared, and you'll do well.
Tough class but well worth the work if you want an A. A lot of reading and lecture material, but she presents the information clearly and is definitely possible to get a good grade. Drops lowest essay score also. Very nice and passionate about history.
worst teacher ever. so hard. you have to do all the reading or you won't get anything. if you really like history it might be a cool class. otherwise DON"T TAKE IT WITH HER!
I liked this teacher so much I took her twice, and History is my worst subject! There is a heavy emphasis on literature reading (Not text book, so sign up English majors!). Your grades toward the end of the semester count more than at the beginning, so you're not penalized for shoddy beginning work. Took time to help me in office hours. Wonderful
Expect to read a book each week and write a 2-3pg response paper. Some are really interesting, some are kind of dry but the class is worth it. Ms. Noonan is very knowledgeable and always helps students who ask/visit office hours. Read the books, pay attention in lectures, & participate in discussions & you'll get the grade you earned.
class is almost unbearable. she takes students phones for texting in class and she is very mean about it. not once have we gotten out of class early. her lectures are just her talking. no power points or handouts. midterms and finals are ridiculous.
Treated us like children in taking a seating chart and taking phones away and telling us to leave if someone seemed unprepared. Refused to repeat questions. Read a couple books with in class essays. Not too hard if you read them. Lots of ID's to learn for midterm and final. Pretty boring overall.
Incredible professor. So knowledgeable and willing to help students succeed. Does lecture a lot w/o visual aids, but is interesting. Also assigns a LOT of reading, but it's not dry textbook material. She expects her students to act mature&respectful, so she doesn't tolerate goofing off (which is great). I hope to take a class with her again!!
I absolutely recommend you don't take this class with her! The class is highly boring and very demanding. She does not clearly clarify the material in class and the amounts of reading is extremely ridiculous!
I wouldn't advise taking this class unless you absolutely love history. She expects you to be just as enthusiastic about the subject. And if you're not you're screwed. Her lectures are boring, she just talks and I feel like she often goes off on a tangent. It can be hard to follow her, but if no one participates she calls on people randomly.
Got to show some appreciation for Noonan. Reading was overwhelming but she is very understanding if you tell her in advance that you are struggling.she is a tough grader, so don't write your essays at the last minute. 2 essays and two exams total. Gotta admit I struggled at the end but she was very forgiving and helped me out a lot!
This class was a struggle, with in class essays, and numerous books. The class was more work then it was worth especially when the class is offered Online. In class essays are rated harshly , one midterm and one final. expect a c, or take somewhere else if you care about your gpa
Least favorite teacher I have had thus far. I am now a senior and looking back on all my professors, Noonan was not my favorit. High school teacher. Ask to go to the bathroom, will call you out if you try to leave early even though she takes attendance via roll sheet passed around. Shouldn't be on your phone but she will actually take it from you.
Dr. Noonan is the only professor I've ever had at SSU who I was not very fond of. She got frustrated with the class easily and it just felt like I was in high school with the way she treated us. We only had 10 minutes to write in class essays which was stressful. I am usually very enthusiastic about school but wasn't feeling it in her class.
She doesnt use power points so you have to show up to each class. She just stands there lecturing the whole class, and will occasionally write key words on the board. If you zone out for .2 seconds you'll be lost for the next 5 minutes.
She requires a lot of reading, just gives you a paper at the beginning of the semester that tells you when your quizzes on each book are but never reminds you to be reading and we never discuss the books. She lectures the whole time, no power points or anything. Takes attendance. And doesn't use moodle. No way of telling your grade at all.
This was the first class I did not like at SSU. She expects you to love history as much as her and gets mad if you don't participate. Don't expect an amazing grade because she admits she doesn't grade higher than a C. There is lots of reading and you must take good notes. All she does is lecture in class so beware. go to her office hours!!
Class is super dry, had it early in the morning though. She just talks too fast and too much. She expects you to absorb all this information and gives a bunch of in-class essays. There were a bunch of books we had to buy and read up on too.
Her lectures are long but she wants you to ask questions. Go to office hours if you need help/clarification. There are many in class essays and she expects you to read a lot in the textbook on your own. No homework other than the reading, two exams and a few short answer essays on the reading.
Long lectures, and lots of reading. Hardly cracked the textbook, but must read the novels for in class essays. Tough grader, but wants students to succeed; always gives students a heads up about key themes and focus points in books. Good notes during lecture are imperative. If you are not a hard worker, do not take this class. Office hoursGO
Love Professor Noonan. She's incredibly nice and patient with students. Her lectures are very clear. She talks close to the entire time you are there because she believes you paid for this time to learn, so you should use it all. Go to office hours if you have an issue and she will help you. Takes attendance randomly.
She tests you on little things that you might have missed, so you pretty much have to write every word she says, and retain it. She expects A LOT from her students, and goes at a very fast pace. I wouldn't recommend her, dreaded going to class every time.
Just finished taking Professor Noonan, and I really enjoyed the class. Not too hard of a class, some weeks there are heavier amounts of reading then other weeks, but it's never too overbearing, but this is upper division, so there will be reading. Likes having discussion with her students, and encourages them to participate. You will work hard.
Talks so much! If you're not into history, do not take her because you will not be intrigued. She gets distracted easily in lecture and it's hard to understand what we are learning about. A good amount of class essays are taken, which are easy if you read the book and review the questions she gives. Hard to study for tests because lots to study!
This class is just a bunch of reading novels (4) and the textbook. If you don't read, you won't do well on the tests or the in-class essays. She lectures the whole class and will only write twice on the board. If you aren't good at taking notes from verbal mouth, don't take the class. She doesn't use Moodle, so good luck finding out your grade.
I'm not a history fan. I was really hoping for a professor who would get me excited about history so I could get through the GE without stress. Kathleen is nice, but she should be a high school teacher not a college professor. She makes a seating chart, expects everyone to love history as much as her, doesn't use visuals and makes you read too much
She is a woman that truly loves the topic and expects her students to be as fascinated with it as she is. Would not take this class or another with her again. The whole class is based off of her lecturing the whole entire time and it is up to you to take your own notes based off what she says. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW YOUR GRADE. Does not use Moodle.
Imagine going to class only to find your teacher is 15 mins late.... Then imagine 2 months into the semester and still finding her 15 mins late..... Not only does this teacher never tell you your grade but she always seems to be in a constant state of confusion. Be prepared to bring a blanket some pillows + popcorn and enjoy the fiesta :)
Critical high yikes. If you want to arrive before you teacher each class, receive unexpected pop quizzes for not raising your hand, not do any of the readings and still come more prepared than your teacher, as well as listen her lectures on greek life this is most definitely the class for you.
Go to class, read the assigned reading, participate, and you'll be fine. She doesn't use powerpoint and hardly ever writes on the board. The more you're involved, the easier your life will be. She doesn't use Canvas, so you'll never know your grade, go to her office hours.
Worst class I have ever taken, especially because it was online. She barely puts in grades and the only grades that do go on are short essays, which she gives very useless and discouraging feedback on. Also, her entire class is her straight talking for over an hour. Overall the way she "teaches" over Zoom is awful.
She lectures the entire class and its awfully boring. She barely updates the grade books and most of the time, the work I did was pointless because she never graded it. She gives more essays than any English class I have ever taken. I would not recommend this teacher. Maybe shes better in person, but online is awful.
The worst professor Ive taken so far at Sonoma State. She loves talking about history and definitely loves the topics, but she is a horrible teacher. Especially online. Constantly ridicules students who do not want to answer. Piles on so many unnecessary essays with only negative feedback. Im sure shes a nice woman in person but as a teacher 0/5
A pretty solid experience, she loves to talk about history, and ask questions to the class. The assignments are easy if you read the books, take notes, participate, and review the questions. All the lectures are recorded as well making it easy to go back and review. There are few assignments, and they have graded slowly Some lectures were sloppy.
By far probably one of the worst teachers I've taken at Sonoma State. She is a very tough grader and only gives negative feedback. The lectures weren't terrible to listen to and she clearly knew her stuff. Unfortunately, outside the lectures, the experience isn't nearly as positive. Avoid this teacher at all costs!
Submitted a paper late and she has said that she will not read and mark a zero on your essay even though she doesn't have a late policy on syllabus and never mentioned it. Also, PowerPoints have absolutely no information on it that you will need for exams. Had to read 4 books that were novels and it was more than I had to read for my English class.
She is very mean and not approachable at all. All she gives is negative feedback back on all the papers i have written and she also takes forever to grade things so you will not know your finial grade until the very end! She is also all over the place with her lectures and very hard to follow along with!
She has a lot of in class essays that you only have 10 minutes to type 300 words for. The class is almost 3 hours long and she talks the whole time. The material is not very captivating and I only took this class for credit, would not recommend.
Professor Noonan is a very kind and attentive professor. She responds to e-mails in a timely fashion and makes herself available to students. She is knowledgeable about a number of subjects and is very helpful. I appreciated the opportunity to have her as an instructor and will definitely take classes with her in the future.
I loved taking Novel History with Professor Noonan. The discussions in class were very informative and enjoyable. We read a wide range of books and I learned how to better critique literature. I recommend that anyone who life to read literature to take this class.
Professor Noonan is fantastic! Do the reading and show up to class and you'll be fine. She cares about the success of her students and is very supportive. I took multiple classes with Prof Noonan and they were always fun and interesting. Her feedback is amazing and in-depth, and it really helped me become a better student.
This prof. is the worst I have ever had. She rambles about the same stuff every week and it's pointless. Don't take this class with this prof.
Never again
Worst professor ever. I can't say a good thing about her. How she still has a job I don't know. She's condescending, mean-spirited, & a horrible grader. Provides feedback on each assignment & consistently tells students the quotes in the essays they included don't make sense. How don't they make sense? They're quotes..from the book had us write on.
Do not take this class. The professor comes off as very cold and expects students to buy textbooks and other reading materials from Amazon instead of using the provided free textbook service. She is very lecture-heavy and it's extremely hard to follow what she is saying and almost impossible to take notes because she is disorganized. RUN
Worst professor ever. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She's very disorganized, strict, has lots of essays, and not allowed to use Grammarly. You also can't make up tests. Her teaching style is very lecture-heavy and is not straight forward to what she is talking about. Her teaching style is not good.
Don't understand August 2024 comments. Classes just started. Professor holding the line on AI so we actually learn to write. Bookstore has a scam going where students rent (can't buy) books for all of their classes for a flat fee (like $275). Besides, all class books/readings are available online or Canvas except one so not cost effective for us.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Her lectures are long and pointless. She's always talking about how behind we are in class but continues to sidetrack lessons and talk about the same thing the entire time. I didn't learn anything. She also has timed in class essays and grades them very harshly.
She's honestly not terrible however I just couldn't learn with her teaching style. Her lectures are so hard to follow along too and I dead ass started laughing mid class because I couldn't believe it how bad it was.
The lectures can be interesting but can also be a little boring. We have to purchase the books for the course ourselves and even though you can find cheap versions it still adds up.There is a lot of reading in this class and essays and discussions to go with it. She is an extremely tough grader. One good thing is that everything is open note.
Amazing professor, incredibly knowledgeable in what she teaches. Taught my AP Gov teacher from highschool through his masters schooling at SSU. Read many books and had a some in class essays. In class discussions were important as well as participation. Slept through 80% of the final and she gave me extra time when I came into class!
